Hi All,
I have been reading the Forum for about 2 months before having my 32MB RAM o2 XDA (U.K.) in hands.
As I am no developer but have some experience with WinCE since its first Habdheld appearance, most posts are Greek to me!
I intend to use my XDA with Vodafone-Greece, but first have to SIM unlock it!
ROM: 3.12.07 ENG
ROM date: 08/13/02
Radio: 4.06
Protocol: 32S54
PW10A1
Questions:
1) How to simply unlock it (USB cradle & OS Win XP Pro)?
2) First upgrade and then unlock or vice-versa?
3) Upgrade to previous to last (v3.17 + 4.21) o2 versions? Have read reports of problems with these. Any link to the older ones?
4) Mind you, I have no idea how to resolve any possible problems with Jeff's SE ROM 1.1 which is on my HDD!!!
5) Local settings to be applied afterwards, manually (?)
Deep Waters ahead ?
THX for any help,
Gear
No really deep waters, I guess.
Just run Jeff's SER exe, it should go in fine, and that makes the PDA part much nicer, and it's pretty risk-free. It will notice, upon cold-boot, that you need unlocking, and offer to do it for you.
We always advise against upgrading the phone part unless you're having some problem, since there seem to be risks associated with the process. Having said that, 4.06 is old, and it's likely you'll be happier with 4.21, but that's your own call. Be sure to upgrade the phone after unlocking, just in case. (there are reports of the unlock not working on 4.21, we haven't had time to look into it.)

Many thanks! I have to wait for my Hasigawa SD card though before proceeding.
Better be safe than sorry...

Dear forum
Please help an ignoramous...
I have just bought a 2nd-hand xda and need to unlock it. I've tried following many threads on this excellent forum, but just get wound up in a ball of uncertainty. Can someone confirm that I am about to do the right thing...
I have an xda with the following details:
ROM: 3.02.00 ENG
Date: 05/27/02
Radio: 4.01
Protocol: 324e2
Should I then:
- update to 3.17.03
- run xda-unlock
- then stop worrying?
... or is it not possible to upgrade to 3.17.03 from 3.02.00 (I can't find any instances of 3.02.00 being discussed in the forum)??
Thanx for being patient with me!
Tim
P.S. Are any of you sitting in DK?
Go ahead and do it, but before you do make sure you back up your existing rom, preferably using the sd card method as outlined clearly in the forum, that way you can always get back to the point that you started should a disaster occur.
Thanks cruisin-thru
Then I think that I have understood correctly that I have to use a serial cable and not the usb?..
I can see that another user with the same xda profile (i.e. rom and radio versions) is having battery discharge problems - do you know of why this maybe happening and whether it's related particularly to that rom/radio type?
Regards
Tim
Take my advise having watched this forum for some time.
do not do any thing to your xda if anyone with the same rom as you has had any issue untill they have been sorted and you are happy you wont styuff your xda a well
if there is a user with the same rom as you that pgraded and now has power issues. check what rom they used and from where. and wait untill they are all p and working aain before you try or you could end up the same.
REMEBER MESSING WITH YOU ROM CAN LEAVE YOU WITHOUT A WORKING XDA. and reloading your old rom back on will not fix it you will see this if you read the forums.
Thanks for the advice, techwatch
I just had an idea. What about if I were to upgrade to the "normal" 3.17.03 rom via o2's own homepage and then run the xda-unlock?
Would this then work?
Regards
Tim
Hi guys.
Can any one help me on my decision on upgrading my Qtek 1010 to the special Edition ROM 1.2 found in this site? I just want to know if it will not destroy my Phone. Here are the details:
ROM VER: 3.14.06 ENG
ROM DATE: 10/01/02
RADIO VER: T313
PROTOCOL VER: 32S54
NETWORK LOCK : GLOBE TELECOM
Thank you. More power.
SER 1.2 is perfect for unlocking, but if your device is already unlocked why don't you go to a WM2003 ROM ?
Hi j2villar
The ROM upgrade in the kitchen will not dammage the phone part of your Qtech 1010, but it my prevent your Qtech to start if the upgrade process goes wrong.
I have 3 points to your questions as I was having this kind of principle questions 4-6 weeks ago.
1. This forum states all over the place that there are risks associated with upgrade, as with any PC's in the old days! This is especially the case with RUU update more than the PDA side of it.
My personal finding are: Mistakes come from people who did not read enough on this forum  , people who did not apply the basic principles of backing up there original RUU and ROM prior to running the upgrade  .
My recommendation is play as much as you want with your ROM, Do not touch the RUU unless you feel you really need it.
2. Although XDATOOLS allows you to make upgrade without going through the SD CARD and BOOT LOADER, I recommend you to make the investment of an extra SD card (one for the backup, one for loading the new rom) + a USB read+write device.
This is a recommendation that you will find all around the place in this forum.
Try searching with: SD CARDS or BOOTLOADER
3. Same as Biso007, why go the Special Rom Edition which is quite limited compared to the flexibility of a own made kitchen ROM. (If the difference is not all crystal clear to you, it is very surely an indicator that you have not yet build up sufficient knowledge about this general topics to clear you from any possible problem when upgrading.
The Kitchen I use to cook my ROMs is the one of LumpyStephan (which is going to be updated soon I think) try: http://lumpistefan.dyndns.org/
Now should you want to increase your global understanding, I have personally found the web site associated to this forum it has a lot of FAQ and well described process http://wiki.xda-developers.com
THANK YOU FOR YOUR EXPERT ADVICE I JUST TAKE HOLD OF THIS PDA PHONE LAST MONTH AND I HAVE READ WIKI'S SITE.
THANKS FOR SPENDING TIME TO ANSWER MY QUESTIONS. MORE POWER
Hey, first post, n first i wanna say thanks! The unlock app worked a treat, i now have 3 XDA v1's to sell, and one for my self, all unlocked!
So, onto my problem...
I have a plain (unlocked) XDA which ive been using religiously, and i want to update it to ppc2003. So i have 2 questions.
1. o2 have the update software on their website. Is it an upgrade to 2003?
2. If the above is a big NO. Where can i purchase the upgrade?
One little niggle tho, if i update it to 2003, will i lose the 'unlocked' status on the phone? Or is it unlocked for good?
Reference stuff so you guys dnt have to ask:
ROM VER: 3.17.03
RADIO VER: 4.21.00
Many thanks guys!

Answer
1: I personally don't know this, someone else can answer im sure.
2: You can get the update here (cook your own ROM) http://lumpistefan.dyndns.org/
Finally I don't think it will be relocked after being unlocked, but again the experts can answer better than I. Good Luck.
Okay, so the second link gives me all these options to make roms. Thing is, i have no idea what to pick for version etc once ive picked pocketpc2003.
Anybody able to shed some light?
DB
EDIT: Bit the bullet, updating now using what i THINK is the right rom. Will let you know.
EDIT: Seemed to work ok. For some reason tho, on every reboot, i get some error bout an app not being compatible with ppc2003. So im rebuilding a virgin ROM and will go from there.
EDIT: Same problem, this rom has nadda but a new bootscreen, today screen, and the 'reg-hacks'. I'm all out of ideas.
'This program only works with Windows Mobile 2003 (4.20.1081)
Its one of the reg hacks that is the problem, cant remember which one though.
Disable
Code:
Fix 'multiple resets make device slow' bug (not A.30.0x or 4.01.1x)
This should cause the problem. Or delete manually the file wm03hotfix from the startup of your device....

Excellent.
Now i know what the problem is, i'll back everything up, and make me a new ROM tonight.
Cheers again guys,
DB
Ok, I work with phones day in day out as i repair them... but i find this site has so much useful information, that nothing is infact in one place... and if it is, then it has a million comments that suggest otherwise.
So, i thought i would firmware update my phone as i've seen a few reviews that have sped up the phone and overal useage of it.
At present, my phone has the following:
Qtek 9100
Rom 1.1.7.5
Rom date: 9/22/05
Radio: 01.01.10
Protocol: 4.0.13.16
ExtRom: 1.1.7.105
So what do I download, what do I install and what do I do prior to it... Backups?
Are there any stickies to suggest backing up and how to install?
Any information would be grateful, as I would like to do this today after work.
On top of this, any information on how I could install MMS, GPRS would too be appreciated, I need t-mobile UK settings. I know about ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/HTC_Wizard/ so if anyone could step-by-step explain this and then maybe put this thread on a sticky so that other newbies as far as this phone is concerned could be helped without feeling nervous in doing it (and getting it wrong because of it!)
Thanks in advance
well?
Want daddy to hold your hand while you do this?
well if it means saving a phone that cost over £600 then sure...
this is not just for me, i am sure a sticky explaining step by step upgrade/backing up will help numerous people including me.
not everyone is as rich as you who can afford to test and possibly lose an expensive phone such as this... and if you think i am judging then you should too stop judging on the basis that i want to be spoon fed.
at the end of the day, not everyone knows clearly on how to do this as there are so many threads.
so am i going to recieve help here or am i wasting my time with comments such as fone_fanatic?
hello akash84
try this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=37386
i read through the whole thread before fiddling around with my wizard. you can find all the tools and instructions there.
reminders:
charge your device before attempting an update [people say above 50% is ok]
also manually copy and run enablerapi.cab on your ppc. to ensure that operations with the tool works.
good luck with your update
its all quite simple realy...
first off unlock your phone fully (CID as well) this ensures any updates will not **** up your phone.
http://buzzdev.net/component/option,com_simpleboard/Itemid,59/func,view/id,8012/catid,45/
insructions and file is there ^^^ very simple to do. (its the second post on that site.)
Next after youve unlocked, go on the ftp server for this site
ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Upload...RUU_Prodigy_1060204_105_11210_TMO_UK_Ship.exe
^^^ this is the latest ROM for t-mobile vario UK. this upgrades your radio rom so you get better signal and also updates the extended rom which makes the phone react a lil faster.
This install take about 20 mins, it will wipe everything off your phone even your contacts. Also very easy to do just follow on screen instructions.
Everyone posts about backup your data but i didnt realy need it because i just got the phone and i had nothing special on it, and im a dare.
Once youve done this then your basicly done.
i also suggest downloading a free registry editor
http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/phmregistryeditor.shtml
i use this one. and do the following registry hacks after the install.
This changes the ugly tmobile dial pad to windows default:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=35631&highlight=dial+pad
This enables the GPS control panal youll need this if you want to run a GPS device:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=36540
this shows an on screen character to notify you when caps lock or secondary function is enabled on the keypad, very usefull:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=38337&highlight=registry
thats about it realy any probs just post
Thank you
Thank you akash84! I've been looking around for a post just like this, a more of a step by sted guide, anyways...
Does anyone know how to change my keyboard into norwegian (if it's possible at all)?
I have a Qtek 9100 (Italian, which I will be changing to ENG after reading trough the links above)
ROM: 1.3.7.16 ITA
Date ROM: 10/24/05
Radio ver.: 01.04.10
Protocol: 4.0.13.17
Ver. ExtROM 1.3.7.107
And which ROM/ExtROM (someone please explain the difference) should I upgrade to (Qtek)?
Thanks...
Erlend, Norway
Yes as you can guess yet another newbie to all this stuff..... I a hoping that there is a nice XDA knowledgable person out there in Cyber land who can advise me on if its safe to upgarde my XDA IIi please.
My pda has this written in the device information:-
ROM version: 1.11.00 WWE
ROM Date: 01-27-05
Radio Version: 1.04.00
Protocol Version:1337.42
ExtROM Version: 1.11.162 WWE
I have downloaded from the XDA ftp ste this Program:-
Alpine_Ext-1.11.162_Radio-1.04_O2stuffstripped_Camera_Fixed
A Friend has told me that they used this program and there unit worked a lot better than before, but also warned me to be very careful as you could very easily kill your xda. So I suppose my question is, can I use it to upgrade and if there are any dangers for me to aware of before having a go.
Sorry for my total lack of any knowledge about this but I really hope that there is someone who could advise me.
Many thanks
JG
Hi there
There is always a chance that things could go wrong - a power cut for instance.
However, I'm an IT Manager, and this was new to me last year too - I just read about peoples experiences and read and re-read the instructions....
The hardest thing was getting the XDA2i to go into programming mode - but that was because I didn't think it had the first time I did it.
Once that occurred it was fairly simple. Your heart is in your mouth when you reset it after it has finished being upgraded but it is well worth you doing it...

1. It's safe to up ROM to your XDA IIi. I have one and did upgrading many times.
2. Due to your device information, it is quite same as "Alpine_Ext-1.11.162_Radio-1.04_O2stuffstripped_Camera_Fixed". Just as Pug and someone have informed: "O2 camera patch has no good quality", so Pug Remove this patch from Original Rom.
3. Just plug your XDA IIi into cradle, run MAUpgrade_noID.exe, follow the instructions and watch movie. After it finish, try to taste it yourself. It is easy as run setup.exe in your computer. And remember, if your upgrade fails, put your XDA IIi into bootloader mode (press Power, Action and Soft-Reset at same time), and do thing follow '3. Just plug ...' .
Have fun.
it did not fail on me, it just hung for a while, then i had to close it using task manager, then run it again, you MUST NOT TOUCH OR UNPLUG YOUR PHONE, before you run it again, it will say there is nothing on the phone then update the bios, i left it for 30mins before i worked that out, i was expecting a "cannot upgrade, flash failed" promte but it just hangs.
