xda as a modem for a laptop - Networking

I just received an email from SourceO2 which includes instructions for using the xda as a modem.
Using the O2 xda as a wireless modem :
You can now connect to the Internet by using the xda as a modem. The modem functionality of the xda is a software implementation of a normal GSM. It can be used with a serial cable or via the Infrared port and can only be controlled from within the modem application on the xda.

Thats what O2 UK said about this.
"Thank you for your recent email regarding the O2 XDA. With reference to using the XDA as a modem, we are looking to add this option onto the next software release on the o2 web site. The next software release is 3.17 which will be released on our site shortly.
If you have any further queries please feel free to contact us further."

o2 have this function on there new version of the software Rom Version: 3.16.32 Eng. It works... kind of. I have had a play with using the modem via IR and had no real complaints.
Gil..

does this work as gprs connection for a laptop?
just curious how is it possible to use my US T-mobile PPCPE as a GPRS "highspeed" connection for a laptop or desktop?

You need the SE ROM update, first off. Then either the IrCOMM software (if using XP or Win 2000) for IR connection, or a serial cable. The instructions for using this are posted on the site, and have been discussed in a few threads recently, look around.

XDA Mini S - Wireless / LEAP enquiry

Hi All,
Would appreciate any advice on this matter. Searched for similar issues on this and other forums with no success so far.
Device is in Corporate mode (simple with no O2 extras). Able to connect to most wireless networks OK including WPA protected, but having trouble with the Cisco based LEAP network at a client's office.
Windows Mobile 5.0 on this device doesn't seem to support LEAP natively. I have tinkered with some of the suggestions around, including using WPA-PSK but nothing seems to work.
Is there something I am missing when it comes to LEAP configuration? Do I need to specify the authentication server?
Are there any tools to make this process any easier? I have seen some excellent thinks around like Funk Software's Odyssey, but not sure that they work on Windows Mobile 5.
ScottH
And the answer:
Hello Scott,
Thank you for your email,
I am sorry for this but it appears it is not present on the XDA Mini S. I was checking this information using a test XDA Exec which displays this functionality as soon as you select Wireless LAN through start then settings then Connections and had assumed because both devices are running windows 5 that both would be similar. However it is not present on the XDA Mini S.
Sorry again for the earlier information.
Regards

For those successfully using Internet Sharing on the new ROMS...

Can you describe the actions you took to make it work? I'm using a mac, which I know most of you aren't, but I'd still like to have as much information as possible so I can try to figure out how to use it with macs, via usb or bluetooth. I know there's a wiki entry for tethering via bluetooth with the wireless modem setup, but the method doesn't work with Internet Sharing. If I(or someone else for that matter) can come up with a solution, I'd be glad to add it to the wiki.

Unfortunately, it seems it won't work with the Mac - see http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1041555&page=2&pp=15 and http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1030837 .

...that blows Appreciate the response though. I wasn't quite sure where to try and get more information on the subject. Doubtful that apple will release a software update for their bluetooth hardware to allow me to do it through bluetooth. I'll probably have to wait on a 3rd party app. Thanks again.
Update...was able to successfully use parallels to tether and connect via usb, but I'm not sure if it's possible to share that internet connection with OSX. Will keep reading.
Cingular 8525 (AKU3)-Internet Sharing with PAN problems
I have a Cingular 8525 (AKU3) and use BlueSoleil BT on my laptop. I followed the instructions described in the forum. After starting Internet Sharing and using PAN I see that the 8525 and the laptop are connected through PAN, but the laptop is not connected to the Internet. What am I missing? I can see that the PDA is connected to 3G, but for some reason on the laptop I can send, but not receive.
I even tried the same with my desktop with the same result. Is there a setting in BlueSoleil that is the cause for not getting on the Internet?
i cant get PAN working on sony ux280p (toshiba stack) with tytn mobile 6.0. it works fine on aku 3.2
Can you describe in detail how you did it?
reinstall or downgrade your bluetooth driver.
i have PAN working on aku 3.3, after i do "windows update", i having the same problem as u. so i have to do "windows restore" back a few week and pan working again.
now i'm on wm6.0, sony ux280p (toshiba stack) cant even find the pan service no matter what i do.
but pan is working on my desktop with windows xp with wm6.0 tho..
Kalrykh, I might be misunderstanding you here. ..but if you're trying to make the phone's "Internet Sharing" provide internet access to your Mac via USB, you can use Missing Sync for Windows Mobile. I've been using it all week (with WM5 AKU 3.3 and now with WM6) and it works *brilliantly*. I just tap "Connect" in Internet Sharing, then plug into my Mac. A few seconds later the Mac is online.
i use missing sync for the mac..all i did was install it and the started the internet sharing program on my tytn and my 8525 and it worked on both
Has anybody used a Nokia N770 or N800 with the new internet sharing system? I am planning to buy one and I want to be able to tether it to my 8525 when I upgrade to WM6.
Ninja1
OS 10.5 will support Bluetooth PAN profile.
I'm sticking with the current official Cingular ROM on my 8525 until then.
OS 10.5 is rumored to be coming out maybe at the end of March.
*wonders*
Why the fuss with bluetooth? the speed isn't fantastic.. stick with good old usb.. =)

dont like cable! but i have no choice! bt pan mobile 6.0 dont work with toshiba stack. but usb pan does work..
found no answer yet.
I tried both BlueSoleil1.6 and Widcom5.0.1 on my laptop XP with my WM6 based Qtek9100, both MyBluetoothWorkplace and Internetsharing show the connection is established, but IE (on the laptop) can't browse anything (while PIE will work over GPRS).
When I Ping the device IP interface (eg.192.168.0.1), it returns "request timeout".
That's strange! any help on that?

No Wireless Modem app on M3100

I have a SPV M3100 and am trying to use it as a wireless Bluetooth modem however there is no Wireless Modem app in Programs -> Accessories.
Any ideas why ??!
It's in mine...I'm using it now to access this site on my laptop.
No idea why it should be missing though. Have you been messing around with the ROM? Updating it maybe to one that does not have it.
You can get the lastest ROM from www.orange.co.uk/business - maybe if you update with this you will get the wireless modem app back.

O2 Mobile Broadband via Phone to Laptop

Having looked at the list of Mobile Broadband offering operators on http://www.ispreview.co.uk/list.shtml I ended up going with O2 because I was already an existing mobile user, otherwise I might have chosen Three for the price. Now I have a problem though because for various reasons I'd like to use my ETen X800 Windows Mobile 6 PDA Phone as a modem for the HSPA connection to my laptop, is this possible? I can have the HSPA service added to my phone but don't know how to share it via Wi-Fi with my laptop.
Mind you, I haven't tried Bluetooth yet but I tend to find Bluetooth irritating to configure, the laptops client software isn't very logical.
you can find more using the forum search in the networking forum and search modem
though dont know if htc stuff apply to eten

IS there an easy way to get O2 XDA MINI S on WPA2?

I've got an O2 XDA Mini S which I've bought into work for people to use to test exchange email account settings on using to office wireless network.
The device will not connect to WPA2.
OS 5.1.195 (Build 14847.2.00)
Is there any (very easy) way to get this device on the office wifi?
Step by step advice would be awesome if this is actually even possible.
Thanks,
DJ
