I am having high battery drain from this also. Since taking my device of charge 5 hours ago it has had a keep awake time of 1h 2mins.
I have a large Google Music library but this should have been indexed by now surely?
Had Media drain the battery two days ago also, no idea if it was just bugged because it can't have been indexing a few wallpapers (that's all I have on the device) to keep my tablet awake for 2 hours. So I cleared cached on the listed apps under Media.
What app notifications are affected by clearing cache then?

When you click Media in Battery status, you can see the apps used by Media. Then go to Settings > Apps > All and go to each of the listed apps and use the clear cache button. For me it was Downloads, Downloads Manager, DRM and Media Storage afaik.
And yeah it stopped keeping the tablet awake after I cleared cache
maybe a fix
i had the same problem after wipe clean and fresh install of JB.
I dont know exactly what solved it but here is what i did:
1. disable media store
2. clear media store data
2.5 executed playerpro application while media store is disabled
3. deleted all .nomedia files i could find
4. deleted the Player Pro album art directory content.
5. deleted all image caches of all applications i could find
6. enabled media store
im on sgs3
Sometimes on my N7 the Mediaserver process is about 40-60%. I have no videos or music on the device. I also noticed, that this process prevents the deep sleep.
What can I do? And how can I stop this process. In the System-Settings -> Apps there is no Mediaserver or something like this in the active-list...
Edit: Ok, I found out, that Skype causes this behavior of the Media Server. It's very strange, because Ijust use the chat function of skype (and just for a few minutes). If I start skype the Mediaserver doesn't stop even if I exit the Skype-App. Only solution: Reboot and don't use Skype or uninstall skype...
mediaserver battery drain hint
hi,
I had the same problem, mediaserver was always in the top 3 in the battery usage list
I have downloaded an app called: wakelog detector, there I could see under the mediaserver the AudioOut_2 was the ?subprocess? keeping the pone awake. other posts suggested this could be caused by viber. And bingo, without Viber problem is gone! but all my friend are crazy about Viber, so I played with the config, and there is a setting in Viber for the wifi sleep policy. select "use device policy" instead of always on. now Viber behave nicely
i have the same issue .taking 50-60% of battery sometimes.
Is there any fix available?
i wish

Or not. I have had the problem for a week. mediaserver from 25% to 76% of use. have not downloaded a thing. Read everywhere but i have seen no fix mentioned. JUst did factory reset and shut down updates with no help. Some say 4.2.2 solved this but not for me?!?!
MAybe someone is smart enough to find the final answer but i'm not.
I've noticed this too, I downloaded android tweaker and disabled media scanner, I believe that's the media server process. So should work!

Sorry to bump an older thread but I came across a revelation due to the above.
This essentially did it for me but I had to also clear all data and not just the cache in "Media Storage" application in my apps folder.
After doing this the Media Scanner quit constantly scanning my media and got rid of my wakelocks due to Media Scanner.
This was likely an event that is a result of my upgrading to a 64gb SD Card from a 32gb SD card. At least that is my suspicion.
Also, please note that 64gb card required me to boot my Ubuntu dual boot machine and format SD Card as FAT32. (Default out of the box now is exFAT but that is decidedly a Windows OS file system.) There are probably other ways to format it for FAT32 but "gparted" in Ubuntu is my favorite partitioning tool.
Hardware:
SG S2-Skyrocket (I-727)
CM 10.1 with latest 7/18/2013 nightly update.
I found Google search service maybe casue the problems, after stop it, mediaserver also stop ate my battery .

Just plugged my Xoom in this morning, first time in a couple of days and my storage is full. I've calculated all the apps I've got installed based on the 'Manage Applications' reported storage usage and with all the apps I've got installed I'm at about 1.5gb, yet when I go to 'Storage' in Settings it reports I've got 11gb of apps installed. My normal storage usage hasn't changed, I've used about 16gb with music and roms and such, but somehow magically I'm using 11gb of storage for apps that it can't actually find... What do I do? Any suggestions? Never had anything like this happen on my Droid so I'm pretty lost.
edit: It's also keeping me from installing anything at all or even updating apps... Pretty annoying.
Just a guess but did you take application storage onto account PR just the application itself. 10 Gig seems excessive for application storage but some games have large files.

The game data for all my games seems in line with the games I'm playing. In the 'Manage Applications' menu, it shows aggregate total, including application storage.
I just uninstalled all the big apps, still nothing. Astro didn't help me figure anything out either, I've got absolutely no idea what's using 11gb of storage now, I certainly have less than 1gb installed and I've only got 2gb free.
Wound up backing everything up and resetting it to defaults... Have no idea what happened but I'll be pretty annoyed if it happens again.

From the market, download an app called DiskUsage. It provides a visual breakdown of all of the data on your device. It should be fairly easy using this app to identify why and where all of this used data is coming from. Hope it helps.
I know about changing the scroll speed or animations on Nexus 7 but i'm looking for other solutions
I have a 32gb Nexus 7 that just started showing a lot of lags currently which didn't appear before (regardless of how many apps did i used with closing them). Lags start to show on Home menus, Dolphin browser is starting to lag as well (this didnt happen before).
Its quite annoying since it was smooth the last time i used it and now i feel like i'm using a gingerbread/ICS device which is quite frustating
i still have 9+ GB remaining free space out of the 27.35+GB. i think the space should be much of an issue since 9gb is still a lot.
You might try a cache cleaner app like 'Clean Master' or 'App Cache Cleaner.' Also, a shutdown, restart is good to do on occasion.
I just had this happen to me also.
I went to settings and storage, the cache took almost 6Gb of data so i taped that and cleaned it... Now it feels new again

Is it possible that it might have viruses on it?

I'm one of the "lucky bastards" who cancelled BBY preorder, ordered from TD and got tablet 2 days ago. When I got the tablet, I installed few applications, 2 different launchers and put an SD card from an old Note 10.1 (500 books/documents, 2Gb music, 2Gb video files). Tablet was very slow, sometimes taking 2-3 seconds to open app drawer. When in S Note, I was often getting "unfortunately IndexService has stopped". I used a task manager, checked this service, it was using most of CPU all the time. I found a thread in Note 3 forum about this service using most of battery. This seems to be a service for new S Finder. On my tablet it was scanning files all the time. I may have a corrupted file or something that it doesn't like. I moved all files from SD, service stopped crashing, lag is gone. I have started moving files back one folder at a time, hoping to find out the bad file.
If you see lag on yours, see if you have this IndexService running all the time.
Have the exact same problem on my note 3 atm. What a pain in the ass to deal with.

I'm using "SystemPanel App / Task Manager" from market, had bought it during 2.2 days, hadn't installed on any of my JB devices. I remembered about that, installed, turned on monitoring and kept an eye on top processes. I'm not saying this is the only reason for lag, but for me there was a big difference after I cleaned the SD card.
I had the same problem but I just removed my SD card let it index then when stabilized in inserted back works good so far secondly u should disable air command
try and see how it work it works very good with me after ur phone get stabilized re activate ur air command
For me the culprit was a corrupted pdf file. My Note3 was fine after I deleted that file.
Moreover I found that the indexservice process is taking more cpu and time when I have more number of pdf files i my memory card.
So, right now either you can put less number of pdf files on your device to avoid the lag or just wait till the indexing completes.
After the indexing completes, the device works as wonderfully as it was working before inserting my memory card.
Hope I helped...Cheer!!!

Use "trials and errors" method, remove your files, make sure search is running fine (which means it's not running all the time nor crashing), then start adding few files/folders at a time. Time consuming of course, but I don't know any other way of doing it. I don't know if this process creates a log file with scan information, that file would be useful.

I am using trials and errors way to detect faulty file by trying to delete few pdf files folders then restarting to check popping of "Unfortunately, IndexService has stopped" message, so after deleting few folder, that popping stop but I am not sure that problem is completely solved because battery consumption graph show that IndexService is still 2nd largest battery sucker after screen, so it must be running in background.
Sorry I'm still layment in terms of rooting & backup. But I did cleared all cache. Can you tell why I got this message- "Security policy restricts clearing off this app's cache" ? So not sure that it completely removed cache.

After removing some complex pdf of maths, "Unfortunately, IndexService has stopped." this message has stopped popping up, but battery drain & heat up is continuously building up. I have to keep it sleep or forced to keep it shut down.
for every ON 2 Mins= 1% battery discharge & 1 degree celsius rise in battery temperature.
What a weird problem is this! I got 20-50gb of academic pdfs which I was looking forward making it pdf library, not anymore due to this idiotic Index Service which scans each & every content of pdf to build its useless search index for every default Samsung app. & gets reset after every addition or deletion of file! I think those pdf with illegible font like those mathematical formulas & Indian Devanagari/Sanskrit script is consider corrupt by Index service, which cause it to crash & stop. In crashing scenarios is better than letting Index service run, because it causes heat up & battery drain by letting it run. Where as "Unfortunately, IndexService has stopped." cause it to stop completely then no heat up & battery drain.
So may be temporary solution is to crash Index service to stop it as we I don't think there any other way to stop it without getting rooting.
What you think guys...?

The device cache's thumbnail pictures of EVERYTHING. This is stored in a hidden folder under \DCIM. This consumes huge amounts of space (Gbytes). It also takes forever to scan a large extSDcard (eg: 64 GB).
There is a simple solution: Tell Android to only scan for media in user-defined media folders. This should be:
\DCIM
\Pictures
\Music
\Video
\Documents
and whatever else you desire.
How to do it? Easy, there is a free APP for that ...

I use it and it is great. It essentially places a "flagging" file ".NOMEDIA" in folders that you don't want scanned and thumbnail cached. I have such flagging files in every folder in my extSDcard, except for a few which have some pictures and music.

I have the same behavior. The heating is not always present on my Note-3. It seems to only occur when I am installing APPS. I suspect this is where our 32 GB storage rom is located (beside the camera), and the write-cycle is demanding higher current loads.

I cannot determine when it happens. I have been trying to replicate the issue numerous times and almost pinned it to the LED notification light until I turned it off and still got a hot phone. It happens more often over night when I am asleep and in the morning I wake up to a hot dead phone or near hot dead phone. I should note that I have everything off overnight so there is no receiving/sending data.

Headphone set
Hi,
I just received my N3 and I am checking all what I had read about issues. Fortunately up to now I did not find any major one except the headphone set. In fact the sound on the right Chanel is too low. I tried to adjust it with utility Adapt Sound but couldn't get satisfaction. I compared the set with my old one so I noticed that it is default in the N3 one.
Had anyone experienced such issue? And do you think Sam will replace the headphone set alone. I don't want to send the whole stuff and potentially get issues with its replacement.

Overnight - well that sounds wrong and bad.
As a last resort: You mentioned that you turn off everything during night. I presume you mean radios (Wifi, Bluetooth, NFC) are all off. There is one other activity that phones do on their own. Email and Cloud services poll intermittently. The polling would use Wifi first, then use 3G as an alternative. What if you tried turning off 3G (Sync in the Notification Panel) during night. However, a misbehaved program might still attempt dispite the disconnect.
I adjust the "settings" in most my Apps so they don't poll continuously or too frequently. This includes Apps that connect to the internet or cloud: Twitter, Facebook, My Fitness, Box, Dropbox, etc.
Another diagnostic you can do: with a fully charged phone, leave it unplugged overnight. In the morning immediately check if it is hot, as not noted. If so, then immediately check the Settings^General^Battery log. This will show which apps and services were hogging the battery.

It works on my Note-2 (Android 4.1) and Note-3 (Android 4.3).
Regardless, there is an easy manual way to stop Android from scanning all folders for media files. This will speed Android and reduce the cache folder (\DCIM\.thumbnail\).
Create a text file. The contents of the text file is irrelevant; so make it with just a "space" character, for example. Name this text file ".NOMEDIA"; there is to be no extension on the file. Place this file in each primary folder that you want Android to no include in its media scanning and thumbnailing. Don't forget to do the same in the folders on the extSDcard. This marker file does not need to also be in sub-folders of the primary folders you are marking; all sub-folders of the primary so marked will be excluded also.
Or just use Quickpic. It's faster, free and you can select which folders it should and/or shouldn't scan.
When your camera doesn't focus, are you close to the subject by any chance? It has a miminum distance requirement.
I don't use Nova, I use Apex. but it has never crashed. (Unless I clear the RAM in taskmanager.)
While playing video from gallery, if I click the screen, the play pause buttons doesnt go back, stays on screen. Why?

Personally, having rooted and even messed around with my phone via various root apps, I've had no hardware issues or phone related software issues yet. That overheating thing sounds like a legit problem - the only time mine got warm was after multiple benchmark tests

i'm using android version 5.0.1 , I don't know what app caused this but :
- My Music is no more shown in the Music Player (only those on my external SD Card are shown).
- Same thing for my Photos, they're no more shown in the Gallery (only those on my external SD Card are shown).
is there a way to re-scan the SD card, I've used a lot of SD card scanners but either they crash or with no positive result.
Any suggestions ?
Thanks in advance.
Are you sure there isn't a .nomedia file in the photo and music folders?

No there's no .nomedia file in both folders.
I suggest the feature on Device Control > More > Scan Media
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.namelessrom.devicecontrol
Clear the data for Media Storage and reboot. It'll rebuild on startup, wait a minute or so for it to do its work.

Media scan is triggered but it takes a bit long to be done. Did you wait?
But, indeed, I have waited 1h and not a different message appear (although the media scan seems to be ok...).

Sorry, I don't have a better solution...
Flashed a new ROM, problem solved.
For everyone who might be reading this post later, if you're on lollipop, don't bother those Scanners apps, you'll waste your time, if you're on Kitkat yeah, one might work, just look for "Media Scanner" or "SD card scanner", that will crawl the whole SD Card and re-index the files (pics & sounds).
if you're on Lollipop 5.0.1 and untill this day, no app has worked for me.
Thanks guys
