Is there a way to bypass mandatory internet for the Nvidia gamestream app? - Nvidia Shield TV & Shield TV Pro (2019) Questions

The app forces an update check, and won't skip the "We need to download additional game data" screen. Does anyone know a workaround for a rooted device to force the app to run offline?

I'm guessing I should probably just setup Moonlight, but was hoping to keep the native app. There's a posterity concern here because when they someday yank down servers, the app won't work despite no real reason it shouldn't work on LAN.

Device Admin

Hello,
Our school district is looking into getting some Android Powered Tablets for us, the techs to use. We need to be able to lock them down (school policy and if the teachers eventually get them), from app installs to wifi usage. We have iPads restricted using the iPhone configuration tool.
anyways, I found online the Device_Admin code/api but I have no idea how to implement it or get it to work. In Android 2.2 there's the option under Settings/Location and Security to set the Admin but nothing is in there.
I have no idea how to code and neither does the other guy I'm working with on this. Is there an easy way to get this setup and configured so we can manage Android Devices on our Network?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Do you mean this API: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/admin/device-admin.html ?
As far as I understand it allows to manage password strength, lock timeout, immediate lock and device wipe only. So no restrictions for "app installs, wifi usage" etc. Maybe I'm wrong.
IF that's all it does then maybe that's not what we want.
Is there software/API..etc... that we can use to "lock" the devices down?
Interesting question, could you specify exactly all features you need?
We're thinking to develop some kind of parent control app for Android, so your request for app is looking very similar.
Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't locking down an android device pretty much impossible?
You can lock down the ROM (probably) but that wont stop someone flashing a custom recovery image, backing up the data, then flashing a new ROM (provided the tablet can be rooted).
To fully lock it down wouldn't you have to lock the bootloader and recovery image so that they need a password to be used? I'm not sure that's possible.
We're not so much looking to completely lock down the device. Honestly if the Teachers get these I doubt they'll try and mod the Bootloader or load ROM's. But we are looking to, if the teachers get them and even other techs get them to use we want to lock them down in a way that prevents them from install unapproved apps, restrict purchasing apps and accessing Wifi/Marker.
We have 10 or so iPads in our district, they are locked down by a policy we push to the pad when WE set them up. It restricts the App Store, removes Safari Browser and doesn't allow app install. It also uses our LightSpeed browser settings so that they can't get to "naughty" or other such sites.
After quick research it seems that you need custom ROM or at least rooted phone where standard browser, market etc are removed and some configuration parameters are hard coded. Also keep in mind that there's no lightspeed guide browser app for android, only for ipad, iphone. I would say there's a lot of work.

[ROOT] Instructions for Airplay Screen Mirroring / Display Extension on the FireTV

Long time reader, first time posting.
Install requires root.
Squirrel LLC just released an android version of their app Reflector ($7). This app can be installed fairly simply on the FireTV, turning it into an airplay receiver for screen sharing and display extension, not just video or audio playing.
This requires root (instructions here) and the google play store (instructions here- they are for kindle, but work) before you can install this program.
Once you have the play store installed and you are signed in, you will be able to install apps remotely. This is much easier, as the play store is somewhat difficult to navigate on the Fire TV itself. However, Google will think the Fire TV is not compatible with Reflector.
To circumvent compatibility restrictions, download Market Helper and install on your FireTV (sideload instructions here). This will allow you to spoof your device type and install the app. I used the Nexus 7 as the device type. Make sure you've run google play services and signed into the play store before you run this, so it can read your id. The activate buttons are invisible until you are selecting them, so just press down and over until you find what you want.
After setting up your Fire TV to look like a Nexus 7, head back to the play store and set Reflector to install remotely.
From here, you can use any airplay device to broadcast to the Fire TV!
Couldn't you use snappea instead of google play?

I wasn't able to get this to work in Extend Desktop mode with my Mac. Since there's only a 15 minute refund period, I already got the refund, so it's possible I was doing something wrong, but the Play description didn't mention Extend Desktop mode. I don't see how I was doing anything wrong though, since the only settings in the app is the Name and the Password (and I didn't set a password). I did remember to turn off AirPlay in my other AirPlay app before trying Reflector.
Prior to this, I was already using AirReceiver to handle IOS mirroring. If all you want is IOS mirroring, I believe it was less expensive. Since it was bought through the Amazon store, it shows up with an icon on main screen (in my Apps and Recent sections). I don't recall if you can buy it on the FireTV or not, but I think so. A Voice search for Air Receiver brings it up.
Thanks!
Hey Guys,
Sid from Squirrels here!
Thanks for the walkthrough and the instructions. We're glad you got everything working!
We've actually submitted Reflector to the Amazon Fire TV store. The approval process is a bit more lengthy and involved than normal Google Play submissions.
As for extended desktop from a computer. It should work alright. I'de be interested in seeing logs from this to see why it didn't work for you. You can email our support team and they'll be happy to get it working!
Thanks again for the instructions.
So why root?? Why not just side load reflector??

Reflector is a paid app, and I have no experience sideloading paid apps / getting a signed apk out of one. I found it to be easier to root and install the play store than to bother with that. If you are aware of an easy method to get the APK out of a paid app, I'd love to hear it- I always pay for my apps, but sometimes I need to install them in a dev environment where the play store isn't available, and I'd like to know.
If you're concerned about rooting, I'd consider the advantages. Rooting is a piece of cake now thanks to Towelroot, and it gives you uped duper more functionality than you have without it, especially if you are using this device to run XBMC primarily.

Thanks for the good customer support. I figured it was the Amazon store's lengthy submission process that was holding things up and not an actual compatibility issue, which is why I decided to hack this together.
I own no other Amazon devices (and probably won't), so it's to my advantage to keep all my purchases within one ecosystem. You may consider adding a little walkthrough on how to use the google play store to run your app on the firetv to your page, if you guys aren't fearful of the wrath of Bezos. I'm sure there are a lot of people like me who bought the firetv for the android, not the amazon.

I'm not sure what happened there for you. Extended display was the default for me. That being said, the other app could have interfered, or maybe your settings in OSX weren't correct. I wish I could help you more, but Airplay is finicky enough as it is, without adding third party software. Maybe get in touch with Sid about that.
If anyone else is interested in this, my brother managed to get airsquirrel to work with reflector on the firetv, but it seemed to be more laggy than with true airplay. I'm not sure if that was the fault of his laptop or the software, so that might be worth looking into if you're a diehard windows user like I used to be.

VPN and AFWall+

I have a Shield TV arriving later today. On my previous Android box I setup a VPN with a kill switch via AFWall+. This involved the installation of the OpenVPN connect application with my VPN provider details, then I used AFWall+ to prevent any data that didn't originate via a VPN connection, effectively making this a kill switch. This involved allowing both the OpenVPN application and Android's VPN api full access. It's the latter I'm enquiring about, does this api exist on the Shield TV? I've heard that native VPN isn't possible as the normal VPN settings aren't present. But does that include the vpn service api itself?
No one?

i have the exact same setup on all my devices, including shield tv, although ive only had to allow the openvpn app, wifi/data/vpn access for things to work, ive never had to allow androids vpn ........is their a specific reason you grant android vpn access?does it not work otherwise?
I use the other openvpn app, by the way
I originally set it up on the tutorial in the link below, which mentions that the VPN Networking service needs to have full access. Is that service present on the Shield?

I just checked for you, and yes, its there, mind you, im using zulu's full rom, not sure about stock rom but as with all my devices, i havent needed to allow this for vpn to work.
Unless theres a specific reason to do so, try without on your current devices, i suspect, vpn networking may only apply if you use androids inbuilt vpn found in settings
Edit
By the way, i dont know how far you wanna take it, but afwall has tasker plugin support, which i use to apply an afwall profile, i named "secure", that denies everything when screen turns off......aswell as other things in the same vain
Edit
I do it a little differently then what youre link suggests, i only allow the bare minimum of apps, those that i actually need internet for.......if an app has internet capability, but i have no need for that side of it, its denied, i dont whitelist ALL apps for vpn as your link suggests
I also suspect that guide was written for privateinternets method of using vpn on android, so maybe vpn networking applies if using private internet, but as for my openvpn app, its not needed.......neither is "GPS"
Cheers. Everything set up and working perfectly in stock, no DNS leaks. A combination of AFWall+, VPN and Xprivacy has the device locked down pretty well.
And what a device, the speed is in another league compared to other similar boxes and worth the extra money. I'm glad I returned my newly purchased Minix Neo U1, this thing is so much faster and not as restricted as I was lead to believe. With a bit of work the Shield TV, even on stock, can do as much as any other Android based TV box, even one based on vanilla.

Yep, ive said it before and ill say it again, the shields an impressive piece of kit for sure
Xprivacy.........snap
We seem to have a very similar setup........believe me, if you wanna take it further at some point in the future.......tasker.........although, fair warning, theres a learning curve
Just some of the more basic things i automate with tasker with plugins like afwalls
When screen goes off, tasker......
Turns off wifi/3g
Turns of bluetooth
Afwall secure profile
Greenify all preselected apps
turn off "unknown sources" for extra measure, as tasker turns this off after it detects an apk install anyway
Turn of "debugging", incase i turn it on one day out of need and forget to turn off
Media volume set to 4 edit:this ones a bit out of place
Aplly afwall profiles depending on what app you happen to be using
Many possibilities with tasker, VERY usefull for many things
Non security related....kinda......... could potentially be used for such if modified
I have a small bluetooth media remote which has the numbers 1 to ten, with tasker and xposed additions module, i fooled around with it, pressing 1 connects the shields bluetooth to the bedroom speakers, long pressing 1 connects to the living room speakers..........i can imagine my self doing some neat stuff with these combination of apps and future accesories
Also, i use it to turn the shields light led to dim to let me now at a glance if the shields on or asleep, without having to change the channel
food for thought for those with similar setups
Edit
By the way, you mention dns leak, i assume you used a test site to check for the leak, any chance of a link? Incase its something very new
This ones the one i use,
https://ipleak.net/
Detects webrtc leaks on the specific browser you happen to be using at the time
Edit
For those interested
More on webrtc here
https://www.privateinternetaccess.c...ome-and-mozilla-firefox-while-using-private-i
If you use firefox or chrome, you can disable manually following this guide
https://www.purevpn.com/blog/disable-webrtc-in-chrome-and-firefox-to-protect-anonymity/
I think there are addons aswell
Edit
"and not as restricted as I was lead to believe"
Yep, i had the same thoughts, just my own assumption really, that android tv was completely different, internally, to "standard" android , pleasantly surprised, no incompatibilities so far............................good to know that stock is like that too :good:
Cheers, I'll read into all that.
One issue I'm finding at the moment is that, on a reboot, AFWall+ doesn't apply as default on the Shield and has to be done manually. This doesn't happen on my Note 3 running Lollipop. I'm sure there is a simple explanation, I'll look into it a bit more.
That website is the one I user to check leaks but there are numerous others too.

Im not sure i understand fully, afwall is not enabled? Or, afwall IS enabled, but your prefered profile is not "applied"?
On full android at least, afwall is enabled upon reboot i havent had any issues in that regard, (saw your other post) i dont need init.d script (usefull to have though, if/when possible)
Have you tried reverting all afwalls settings to default, to rule out that likely suspect
Another likely suspect, xprivacy, but that depends if you restrict everything like i do, including system apps , if so, have you checked xprivacies usage data for afwall and global apps?
Another suspect, could be stock firmware, but i have my doubts about that one
Assuming im understanding the issue correctly
Edit
I dont have "fix startup data leak" checked(as we dont have init.d), nor ipv6 support checked as your link described

How to Get Xfinity TV (X1 app not TV to GO) to not close back to home screen

has anyone figured out why the Xfinity TV app closes or how to fix this I have the newest version installed on my nvidia shield and the app closes after about 10 minutes of watching a live or on demand show and goes back to the Home screen? On my fire stick the app doesn't close but I get other playback error on live channels. The TV to Go app works 100% on my correctly it never closes but it lacks a channel guide and DVR abilities so I would rather use the X1 TV app instead. any suggestions on how to get the app to stop closing back to the home screen?
I can't even get it to authorize my device. I put in my info and it just gives me a retry error.

I think it did that for me too at first I had to call Comcast and tell them I to activate my account to use the X1 TV app they did something on their end and I was able to login and add my device to the system. . I wasn't able to use the app on any device though so that may have been something different

Same issue, want to get it working on the Shield. any fixes?
Have you tried this modded apk? It's been floating around and hasn't given me any issues. It even opens right to the live tv channel selection. I also created a banner so it shows up in the Android TV leanback launcher.
http://www.filedropper.com/xfinitytvgopackage
disregard, i just realized your post said not TV GO...
The reason xfinity tv app was closing was due to the blue tooth keyboard turning off after not being used got a WiFi one solved the problem or now just using the game pad right control stick. New issue is the newest version won't play content I have to use the old version of the app. Anyone have any ideas?
BUMP, we really need to figure this out! I was really enjoying the TV GO app working on Shield, now that it is retired we really need to focus on getting the replacement Xfinity TV app working!
Yes, mine does the same and won't work. Now it looks like it is dead and they have stopped the server. I have tried all different solutions. Is there a modded apk or a fix yet? I used to use the Xfinity TV Go and now it won't work. Xfinity TV won't even open.
I can confirm that the Xfinity GO app no longer works on the Shield TV and that the current Xfinity TV app crashes/closes after launch. My guess is that the app checks the type of device that the app is installed on and if it detects that it's an Android TV OS it automatically closes. I wonder if there's a way to modify the APK to either trick the device into thinking it is running on stock Android or remove the check altogether?

I rooted one of my shields so it is running full android OS 6.0 and in about devices it declares it's self as a Tablet thinking the same line of thought you are presenting. No dice. Downloaded the Tvgo app and it did just about the same thing. The app loaded and I got all excited then I selected some content I had recorded and live tv and both times it came up with something to the effect that your carrier does not support releasing DRM content to this device crap.. Ultimately they want you to rent one of their POS boxes. The silly thing is if that is what they are so worried about, losing that revenue stream, then why allow anything but their devices to run their content? Can still run on laptop or pc no problem. Apparently they are not aware of casting? It's all the same big corporation trying to hold onto market share by force instead of placing that energy into developing things people want along with the evolving tech. They will have to evolve or go the way of Block Buster video. LOL.
Hi Guys,
Been looking at this for a while. I have a Nexbox A95x Aml based Android box. The latest version of the Xfinity TV App (3.10.0.016) refuses to work . But... I have managed to find a earlier version that does. I can only presume after this version (3.2.1.028) they added the DRM type check , to check for either root or a "non approved" device.
I have tested this quite a bit and it does live TV and also you can even download (the holy grail lol) and watch shows offline. To do this, the app MUST be left on internal storage and not moved to the SD card.
The bad news is that at some point I bet Xfinity will force a update ie make this older version non working. But hopefully , someone here will be able to turn that off.
Dont forget to go to the Google apps store and disable Auto updates on this app ,otherwise your device wil just Auto install the newer version.
Hopefully , someone (much more skilled than me lol) may be able to compare this older version with the new one and disable DRM check for a newer version.
I have uploaded the version that works for me here:
h t t p://bit.ly/2gQn3eR
Sorry for the funny url , but XDA will not let me post urls until I have ten posts..
Any updates on making the official XFinity TV app work now that XFinity TV Go has been shut down?
I am also looking for someone who can mod the new Xfinity app (remove the HDMI check.......I think) to get it to work on the fire stick. The new version loads but will not open. The screen automatically goes blank and closes down.
I just wanted to let everyone here know that if you upgrade your shield to Nougat the Xfinity TV even older versions of the software that would work on prior to the new 7.0 firmware release now won't work at all so if this is something you want I would hold off on doing the 7.0 Nougat update to your shield I plan on reverting back my shield to regain the ability to use the Xfinity TV app.

Thanks for that information. Sucks for us Nougat upgraders though.
hey guys
I've got some pretty good news for those with the new Nvidia shield or have updated the old one to Nougat already and lost the ability to load the Xfinity TV app. I have found an alternative way to watch Xfinity on the shield Tv it is not an ideal way to watch and may not work for everyone's needs. I found that if I launch a game stream game on the Shield and Minimize the Game window before the game starts up or goes full screen, you will get a remote desktop like session which can be controlled with the the joystick on the gamepad. open a web browser and go to Xfinity and it works there is no lag or out of sync audio, it works pretty good, the Quality is better than casting a chrome browser tab from the PC, I also found controlling youtube from this remote desktop method is a far better interface than the Android TV app since you get the full website version of youtube instead of the slimmed down tv app. I should point out this nvidia Gamestream Remote environment is different than using a typical remote desktop client like the Microsoft Remote desktop client, most remote desktop clients don't offer the refresh rates needed to stream HD video without lags or audio syncing issues however the Nvidia Gamestream app does. I am sure there are other apps that can deliver a RDP session with the high refresh rates needed for viewing 1080p video over and RDP connection, I just haven't found one that works that will do this job. If anyone is aware of another app than can do this let me know I'd like to try it out.

Best way to give kids LIMITED internet access on a Fire that has Play Store installed?

E.g., I want them to be able to use Disney+, and I want to be able to install new apps from Google Play, but I don't want THEM to install new apps or use a web browser.
All my kids are under 10 years old. They can figure out basic settings, usually. I can just hide certain apps but they tend to find them while messing around.
Google allows you to create child accounts, which can be controlled by parent accounts. However, it doesn't seem possible to sign into a child account on a Fire (I seem to recall that this has always been a limitation).
Amazon provides some sort of kid account mode but it doesn't work with Google stuff.
I can just not give them the Wi-Fi password, but that's the nuclear option.
I might be able to install LineageOS and do something with that, but I'd prefer not to go to so much trouble. Using the Fire Toolbox is much less time-consuming.
My best bet at the moment seems to be NetGuard, which can disallow certain apps from accessing the internet. It seems to work pretty well, but there's no way to password guard it, so they'd probably eventually disable it by accident or while trying things out.
Any methods I haven't thought of?
Sadly the only way you could do this is install lineage os
