My EVO is rooted with custom Evio 1.5 ROM.
Now my question is, I thought that you could have it so that th EVO acts a wireless hotspot for other devices.
Now, I know that you can have it act as a hotspot and transmit the 3G/4G signal as a rotuer.
BUT, I thought it was possible to make it so the EVO could share the wireless signal that it is connected to, to other devices.
Sorry if this sounds confusing, but I live in an apartment complex with free wifi, but it requires you to open up a browser and it redirects you to a page where you enter some info and it gives you a free "account" to access the internet. Well, my friend wants to go on Xbox Live and well, the 360 does not have a browser to enter the information, thus the wifi blocks his 360.
My EVO picks up the wifi just fine (because it has a browser) so I thought it would be a good idea, to receive the wireless signal and transmit it to his Xbox 360 as a different router but still using Wireless speeds.
I swear that when I was messing around with my EVO that I could share my wireless internet with other devices, but I thought it was a useless tool, because if the device can already connect to WiFi, then why does it need to connect to my EVO. But now, I see a good use for it, but for some reason I cannot figure out how to do it.
3G is a lot slower than our WiFi, and we don't have 4G in Rochester, MN.
Does anyone know if there is a way for the 360 to bypass it, or know how to transmit a wireless signal from the phone and turn it into a router.

I don't think that it is possible. There is only one wifi radio. Either it is using wifi to be a client, or as the hotspot or tether application a host.
Think that you would need two wifi devices, like a notebook or desktop running wifi and using the ethernet port running Internet sharing plugged into the back of the Xbox using ethernet or possible using ethernet from your PC into a router.
I work for a company that installs systems similar to the one probably being used in your apartment complex. Devices on our system (Nomadix) are authenticated by MAC address. Have you tried to spoof the Xbox's mac address on a computer, sign in to the web and then attempt to connect with the 360?
AFAIK you cannot both connect to an access point and broadcast a signal for another device to connect to. I know that you CAN connect to an access point and USB tether. You can also connect a laptop to the free wifi and share the connection to the xbox with a cat5 cable.
download "wireless tether pre 11" and use it to play xbox live, i used myn the other night for about 5 hours and only burnt through 20 some megs, um if you dont have wifi on your xbox, use a laptop and pic up the signal with it and plug in an ethernet cable to your xbox from your laptop. that will also work, it is a bit slower than your net in your apartment, as i was only getting two to three bars the whole night.

Spoof your computer mac address to that of you 360. Activate, then connect 360
Or use a laptop to connect to wifi, then a bridge ethernet cable form laptop to xbox.
or you could (insert something that was already said four posts up).

Hello all,
Here is my deal and hopefully someone can help.. I have an Evo 4g.. currently I do not have internet in my home (cable started getting to pricey in my area) and have rooted my phone and have been using the wifi tether app. However, I want to also share connection with other devices throughout my home, ie, 2 laptops, 1 desktop, 1 xbox360 so I purchased this Zoom 4501 wireless N router that works with 3G/4G, wifi, cable etc..
Now, I was able to connect my phone to the usb port on the router, go through the setup wizard and and was able to actually get the router up and running however, the only way to do it is by turning on the usb tether option in the settings menu.. it only works on 3G and not 4G.. when I turn on the 4G option, it says that I do have an account with sprint.. is there any other way around this? If anyone can help, let me know thanks!

Just make sure only the router is connected to the evo with encryption, everything else will be handled by the repeater
Buy a router that you can put tomatousb firmware on it. Then configure the wireless as wireless bridge or client to the evo's wireless tether. Works great for me when the times my internet is down.
My University does not allow Wi-Fi in the dorms because they say it "puts a strain on the network". This includes Mifi's and mobile hotspots.
I have OS X Lion and Windows 8 (Dev Preview) through BootCamp and I get internet through ethernet. I need some way to share internet access from my MacBook Pro to my A500. I also have a rooted Samsung Fascinate, but I cannot Tether at all with it because a. I dont have enough data a month to do that, nor do I have the money and b. the root apps give errors no matter what rom I run.
Buy a wireless router and passcode it.

If your major has anything to do with IT look into another school.
At least if they are not providing their own wireless network and that is the only reason they don't want you to have one.. otherwise the reason you provided is fud if you had a personal nated + wpa 2 protected + hidden network..
Otherwise:
The A500 cannot reverse tether without root. With root you can sorta do it via a root shell and linux commands.. You end up with a connection but many apps think there is none, fine for me surfing the web on the bus but you can't use market and apps wont auto sync.
Some custom firmwares based off the Asus and other android tablets with the same chip set do have true working Bluetooth tether. Thus may fill your needs better.
(Actually I see partial support for Bluetooth tether built into the 3.2 update, but forcing it enabled made the tablet crash, and still needed root to force the option to exist)

Nah, may also need to disable your essid and clone your desktops Mac address.. otherwise it may disable the Ethernet Jack.
All wireless routers ive seen can do this out of box.. even if I like updating them with openwrt firmware.
can your Mac provide an adhock network?
When my friends router shat itself all he had was a adsl modem with eather net out. He set up his I Mac's wifi so that his iPhone could connect to it (over wifi) in the house. He had lously cell connection where he lived.
Can you do some thing like that and get your tab to connect to your comp? Or am I not understanding the problem?

Well you are kind of screwed - soft of.
It is the schools network. They can dictate what they want on "their" network. And even if you hid it, etc they still can see what it plugged in.
But they can't tell you that you can't have WIFI at all. WIFI runs on 2.4 Ghz for B/G/N and 5.0 Ghz for A/N bands that is unlicensed frequencies. So if you have a some other Internet connection, ie 3rd party like DSL, Road Runner, whatever, they can't tell you that you can't use WIFI. They can only control their network.
The reason I mention this is because I have seen WIFI Nazi's out there trying to be all macho even when it isn't their network. You might be fortunate enough to have WIFI in the area that you can use, say a friends close by that has commercial ISP and wireless. Also possible to use DD-WRT to put a router in client mode to pick up a signal farther out and and a 2nd router to broadcast that signal in your room.
So, I'm getting a tablet and Seagates wireless hard drive to use with it. The only thing is I won't be able to tether to my phone if using the hard drive, so I was thinking of getting a mini wireless portable router.
My question is, how can I get my phone to tether to a wireless router (say a DLINK g730ap) so my tablet can access the Internet and the hard drive within the DLINK? Unless I use the Android Tether as a router, where the hard drive connects to the phone and the tablet connects to the same phone. But I don't know what the transfer speeds are going to be, I imagine it would probably be slow, but I'm not sure.

I think I understand what you want to do, and it's something I did not too long ago. I actually wanted to see if I could use Sprint Hotspot on my EVO, tethering at 4G, as a replacement for my xfinity internet. The problem is, the router I use requires an Ethernet connection as it's internet input, so I wasn't even sure it was possible. But, apparently, it is. I had to change the firmware on my router, though. If you're trying to do something similar, that's likely what you'll have to do. I got my modded firmware from dd-wrt. But there are a LOT of warnings, and just like upgrading the firmware on your phone can lead to a brick if done incorrectly, the same goes for the router.
I actually couldn't get it to work using Wireless Tether for root users; it only worked with the native Sprint Hotspot, so unless you're paying for the service, it might not be possible. And your bandwidth will be very limited, so don't expect very fast transfer speeds.
Router
You have 2 separate hurdles to cross-
1. DD-WRT compatible Router to handle all 3 devices communication
2. "Wireless Tether" does not create an actual router, it creates an Ad-Hoc based connection using basic ICS, and typical network/routing functions are not available. If you don't want to use Sprints Hotspot app, you will need to get specific instructions on DD-WRT's forum on how to properly configure this type of setup and use your router as a gateway. I'm sure the information is probably posted already somewhere over there. Head over there and start digging. They are to routing as XDA is to mobile phones.
im running this setup now with my phone and xbox and whatever else. like has been mentioned you need to put ddrt on your router and configure it as an ap bridge. then you have to link it to the ....wtf..hold on ill link you.

Yeah that's the way to go, I use ddwrt in client mode so it pulls my wireless tether from my phone and sends the signal out through the cat5 or 6 cable to whatever is wired to the router. But repeater/bridge mode would be needed to send wired signal and also repeat the signal through the antenna for broadcasting wifi from the router.

I can't figure out how to use this. I turn on WiFi tether, Wifi itself turns off on the phone. Now, I have a WNR3500L with the toastman tomato mod, and I can't figure out how to get it to work with this.
So I'm trying to hide some network traffic from my provider Three UK. As my new contract only has 2gb hotspot and I really miss the old unlimited system they had.
Now I'm only trying to tether an android tablet to the phone nothing else, so I'm not sure how they're detecting that it's tethered bandwidth.
Figured I'd try using a VPN to hide the data but now I'm confused. My phone isn't actually sending the hotspot traffic over the VPN.
I tested local traffic and the values show that is going through the VPN, but anything via the hotspot is not. Any idea why? See speed at the top of this bad image, then VPN speed below.

Looking into this further, my tablet get's a seperate IP than my phone, both provided by Three UK.
The vpn might not help much depending on you setup. Usuall there is a packet counter for tethering, among other things. Try providing output from these commands via adb shell or terminal emulator, probably need to be ran as root.
iptables -L -n -x -v
ip route show
ip rule show
Usually iptables rules get reset on a reboot, I usually run iptables -F, which flushes all rules a -Z should reset counters. But starting with the output of those three should help to figure out whats going on exactly.

I can tether invisibly via bluetooth and some simple apps but these are far from perfect and cause errors in things such as plex etc.
The wifi hotspot is interesting though. It seems to actually work as a little server, gives out a new connection to the devices not just sharing it's own. To get 2 different external IP addresses, very interesting.

I have never heard of it giving out external IP addresses, maybe its something specific to you carrier. If thats the case why not connect it via bluetooth to a linux pc, make the pc the access point, then you can route and rewrite packets easily.

Well, if we're adding a PC to the mix I could just USB tether then output wifi from there.
However, it's mainly while im at work watching TV at lunch on the tablet.

In that case I am pretty sure you will need root. They are probably seeing that you are tethering by either iptables packet counters, creative routing, or user agent strings. If you are tethering another android device for watching media then it is unlikely they are catching you by user agent strings, since both devices should have android user agents. If you are opposed to rooting the device maybe you could buy a cheap one, root it, and swap the sim card into it when you want to tether?

I posted a guide on how to do this, its the only method that's worked for me, but you need to be rooted

Well bugger, I really don't want to root my Z3 due to all the DRM software on it.
I can tether USB and Bluetooth without being detected, but WiFi hits this snag still sadly. I can USB tether to a laptop then wifi share from there but that's getting a bit long toothed to just tether my tablet.
The Bluetooth tethering works but flash apps and a few others don't really like it, plex etc.
