A better camera app? - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

First day with this fabulous device. Came from Note 7. The only disappointment so far is the camera, especially low light. I'm wondering if it's just the app itself. I downloaded LIGHTROOM and I'm getting better results but has anyone found another camera app that works well?

"A Better Camera" seems to take better quality pictures in low light (just testing it at my desk). It crashes on setting image size in the setting though (but not from the in app menu).
However, it's video function doesn't let you set resolution/rate and such like the built in app.

People seem to like "snap camera" app the most especially on low light. Maybe you can try this.

Camera FV-5
The Best Camera app I use is "Camera FV-5" its only a Camera not a video recorder though, its a professional camera soo yeah

Camera Zoom fx premium

None of these seemed to make a difference for me. Mist be the hardware.

1) As a general point, low light photography is the weak point of the Axon 7 camera
2) You can try open camera. I have had good results. It is a free open source app

One thing i found just by mistake, was if you tap on where you would like to focus in low light conditions it will turn on nightmode and give slightly better picture.

Anyone able to extract the stock camera app?

Can u use Google camera ?

I was not impressed with Snap camera's low light performance. I actually think it's worse than the stock camera app.

Cinema fv-5 for better video
And the app called: 'a better camera' for better pictures

Yes, Google camera works great... Not any improvement in quality, but works great. Not like it did on the Nexus 6P (not able to swipe to change from camera to video, have to use swipe-out menu).
If you have the ZTE camera open, then try to open Google camera (or any other), you'll get an error the camera is in use by another app.

You should be able to extract it from any of the stock system partition images -- either direct from ZTE's files or from DrakenFX TWRP backup versions.

The default camera app already has the best options for low light. It's just a trade-off between shutter speed and grain. You can use SUPER NIGHT mode or ISO100 mode in manual to get less grain but you have to hold still to avoid blur. SUPER NIGHT seems to make a composite to reduce blur though.

Any sample shots using super night mode?

Zte is not using the CameraApi2 so you won't get the same quality with a 3rd party camera app.

I've personally found that HDR works quite well in low light, sometimes making the shot look brighter than real life. The only annoying part is keeping the phone steady to avoid blur.

Where's my macro Samsung?!

As the title says I've used a Galaxy S3 for a year and just now I jumped the wagon into the Note line but I used to take macro shots at a daily basis but with this camera there's just no option and in auto mode it isn't as macro as it should be, why is this feature gone? Do you guys have any solution?

Different Camera app.
I ditched Stock Camera because there's no Manual mode. (or if there is I haven't found it.) I'm a photographer, I don't need some idiot in a factory choosing the settings for me...
Ditto, sometimes I just want to do it by myself and this camera is neither for average Joe's or for us what app are you using?
Sent from my SM-N900 using xda app-developers app
ProCapture. It doesn't have an ISO setting (which is irritating), but it does have most other settings. I don't bother looking for an aperture or shutterspeed setting on a mobile device as those settings have little function on a smartphone, but for the everyday use, this app functions best out of all I've tried.
Plus it has a mute setting. It is rather slow at 13MP in terms of saving, though.
I've also got PhotoFX Zoom, ShotControl and FV5 installed.
Truth be told I haven't managed to find a perfect camera app for photographers. Funny how all of android is customisable and user-controlled... except the camera, which appears to be aimed at the average iSheep.
Focal (by Chainfire) looks promising, but is a rather unstable Beta.
If anyone has any suggestions, please do share. Spare me the 'effects-cameras' though. I know how to use Photoshop. Something that works with RAW files would be absolutely ideal.

[App] Pro Capture

Bought this app as part of the Play Store sales that just happened. So far it's the best camera app I've tried with the N5. UI is decent, solid amount of features, and shutter speed seems much improved for me.

A couple pics using it. Again, shutter speed is much faster and it doesn't seem to effect low light pics.

Just picked this up, seems faster and focuses better (even though it shows the red focus indicator, it's usually still focused properly.)
Yeah, I found the same, especially in macro mode (all the beer related pics above were in macro with a red focus square).

I'm glad you posted this, most of the camera apps I've tried, even those that have been updated for Nexus 5 and 4.4 compatibility all seemed to act weird when tapping to focus, the exposure on screen would flash really dark and often times stay dark.
This doesn't seem to have that issue, so thanks!
Heres a few random macro/close up shots I took.
Just tried it out much better than the stock camera app in my opinion will be using this one
Can confirm this app rocks! Much much better focus speed and picture quality too. Its on sales now ( I'm not promoting for this app )
Thank you very much for this find!
I have tried so many different camera apps (cameraFX, Camera Awesome,...) until now, and none of them did work out really well.
This one is fast in autofocus, Burst Mode is working and the pictures look great!
Another happy user here, came from iPhone 5 , very happy except camera , that's been solved with this app

Holy [email protected]! This app is a HUGE improvement over the stock camera! Thanks to y'all for pointing it out and recommending it/ showing it off! :highfive:
Just bought it. It was 99 cents so I guess not a big deal to try out. I noticed the auto focus isn't great but tap to focus works better than stock. Is it supposed to have a native video recorder? When I clicked "camcorder" it tried opening my stock video camera and then crashed. Also, I'm not sure if the "reduced noise" is usable. It's fairly slow to take the pic as well as to process it.
EDIT: Nevermind about the video, just read on the app page it doesn't support it.

Disappointed with Camera, suggest alternate cameras apps

Had purchased this phone with lot of expectations about OIS camera but unfortunately the camera itself is capable bug LG provided with not a great camera app.
Now I know that there are mods available which to some extent improve the quality of photos but still its not upto the mark.
Now I want to know whether you are using any good camera app which you consider gives better result than the stock camera?
Looking forward to your suggestions.

I personally think the camera itself is great piece of hardware, the software is on the other hand, however, as many reported (and I agreed) the IQ (image quality) when taking in the good light source is super. In another hand, when taking under low light condition, it's crap.
There is a modded version of it, if yours is rooted, give it a try.
I tend not to install 3rd party app.
I've tried the camera on stock lg rom and 4.4.2 on PA, both pictures look terrible compared to the Nexus 5's camera with HDR mode.
I am using Focal camera (from the ex-CyanogenMod app ). Great UI and features. Still beta, but no lags for me)

personally i think the camera is pretty decent on the g2 id imagine the lumia ones are better obviously but fail to see another phone thats better than the g2's
lmao. random noobs who haven't even used the other device talking about comparison? what do you know? nothing.. keep theorycrafting.
the nexus 5 has an optimized camera app that has better image stabilization and HDR+ mode that actually works by taking 5 pictures and combining it into a much crisper picture compared to normal mode. the HDR mode in the G2 looks practically the same in terms of sharpness and quality.

I'm the opposite heh, I returned my Nexus 5 and picked up a G2 and think the pictures from the G2 look considerably better, in anything but great lightning. Outside with great lighting I think both create very good photos. Additionally, while the software part on the G2 isn't great it's still well ahead of the camera software on the Nexus, which is about as bare bones basic as you can get.

I think it actually only uses 3 pictures though. But not sure. I saw in a review that it uses 3 with 4.4.2 to make it faster a little. But it still turns out great. I personally can't see the difference in pictures unless placed side by side but that's just me I think since I don't really pay too close detail.
One thing I want to say is video on the nexus 5 is terrible unless full day light and even then not very good. It darkens it so much (which I think is software) but it's practically unusable with out lots of light because of that. Hopefully Google fixes that

Is the image stabilization a hardware feature? Like, in the VS980 version of the G2, does image stabilization work when using AOSP-based KitKat roms and the default AOSP camera?
The Lenovo Supercamera or whatever it's called will blow you away mate.

That one is in my Dropbox, it's the same APK from the thread in Apps & Games section.
I think they renamed it to Lenovo SNAPit too, not sure.
Change it to 13MP in the settings menu too, because it's set lower as default.
Here are some shots I just took (huge images)

Not a photographer so they might look ****, I don't know lol.
I'm disappointed too with g2 camera (d802), it is extremely slow and in low light it is impossible to take pictures. Then I installed aosp roms and things got worse. Here some pics, taken in very low light with aosp camera (android 4.4.2) but even with stock rom camera I can not obtain decent results.

Camera App alternative

I've got a Huawei Mate 9 Pro with dual cameras and I must admit, the software is magnificent - so many modes and options. Bokeh is achieved through 'wide aperture' and it looks fantastic.
When you look at the OP5 camera software, you're feeling a little underwhelmed. It's shame because everything else is so good!
Is there an alternative?
I see there's "Camera MX", but I'm not sure if this supports dual cameras and the Bokeh effect?
Open camera seems to work ok lots of options to tweak over stock cam app

The open Camera apps allows you to be able to capture and render 100% of the details, special effects like portrait mode .. unless they add it to the open camera source coude the app wont be able to reproduce the same mode..
Open Camera takes abit longer when taking pictures with 100% quality but the results is the quality is inded higher than the stock camera app, at least in my experience that is in OP3.
I am impressed by Open Camera. Less blurring and easy to use.
Try OP5 camera apps, its portrait mode is super

camera app

So everyone is complaining about the camera app. What am I missing? Can't you just install the Google camera app?
I was wondering the same but thought maybe that it could possibly not be used due to the two camera setup.
I've read people say you can just install the Google camera app, and that it works fine (but no more detail than that - I imagine it might not use the monochrome camera, will be surprised if it tries to use both together).
The OnePlus 5 camera was ported to the honor 8. Maybe the same could be done for the essential phone

I installed the APK for the Google Pixel Camera ... pretty sure it was from this site. Didn't work. Crashes the instant you open it. Kinda wondering if I did something wrong??
PS: The camera really is beyond awful. The results are on par with a 20 year old disposable camera. Really need to get something better ASAP.

Guys am I missing something? Is there any way to change from a 4:3 aspect ratio to a 16:9 one for the rear cameras using the default camera app? I am able to do it of course using the Google camera app.
I use the "Open Camera" app. Seem to work well
I haven't seen anyone mention that the stock camera app is compressing the pics. Stock pics come out at 1.6 mbs or so while Gcsm is 3+ mbs.

Don't have the phone on me now but I'd imagine it's the resolution that sets the aspect ratio so choose one that is 16:9 like 4032x2268 (9.1M) or 2560:1440 (3.7M). At least those are my options on my S8's stock camera app... lol
Just got the phone and seeing the resolution as 4160x3120 but the file is only 1mb vs 5.5mb on the Google camera. Too much compression, no wonder the photos look so grainy.
