Omate Rise - Other SmartWatches

Im not sure if this is supposed to be posted here but Xda has not made an omate rise section.
Ive recently received my omate rise smartwatch, its a decent device though lacking app content for the moment since there is no google play support. I have several annoyance with it but especially the keyboard, the stock firmware uses a "sample soft keyboard" which is packaged as "com.example.android.softkeyboard" its a horrible keyboard on its own but its supposed to be used in conjunction with the phone app Olink. When you tap the keyboard on the watch while BT tethered to a phone, the Olink app supposed to popup a second keyboard which you can input and send it to the watch input fields.
This sounds good and all but doesnt work with all the time. so i installed various other keyboards i.e google keyboard, minuum, etc. They all have a strange issue where when the keyboard options or keyboard is called up there is a black solid overlay that blocks the view no matter what. can anyone help.
also if anyone know a way to install google play that would be good, also even though i ordered the dev version, the device does not come with SU binaries and not rooted. omate just avoids the question altogether

Play Store install will require somebody make a custom recovery for it. Seeing that Omate has burned so many developers and XDA, the chances of that happening are slim. To be honest, selling it is your best option as according to Omate, every watch they sell is a "dev version". This pretty much means you are on your own.

Be aware of this company and thear products!
Ive received broken watch, after that Ive send it back to the omate office in HK, they promise me to refund the shipping back costs. As for now they received the parcel, they refuse to repair it and start the procedure of refund, the pay me on my paypal not the full amount as Ive pay on Indiegogo (the chose me to pay the 11.43 USD commision for this transaction) and refuse to refund me shipping back costs. Be aware of this scamers!!!

I got a Omate Rise from a private ebay seller for about 2 weeks for my brother. I made a lot of updates and there is now a GooglePlay store on it by OTA-Update. But I search for a better app for circular displays. I hope I can grab the play:store apk from the fresh Android Wear 2.0 preview 3 rom. You can get it here https://developer.android.com/wear/preview/downloads.html, extract this with winrar and look into the system with ext4_unpacker_exe.zip .
PlayStore and the menu look really nice:

Jup the keyboard ist still the bigest problem.
Currently there is LatinIME.apk installed per default from OTA/stuck rom. I try some keyboards and the could be the OneTouch keyboard. Looks really nice for the small display:
Also for round displays. It was a kickstarter. I was able to activate beta testing in google play store but sadly I can not buy the in-app-purchase with the current stock-rom:
After starting there is a relly really shor time the purchase button:
Then it is gone:
But when I can press/touch the button it fails because on the payment:
I can touch "Weiter" and I can fill out my paypal-payment data with "adb shell input text 'my-text'":
But at the end he did not accept my billing method:
The non-beta has a working IME-Keyboard but there something I missed so, I changed back to stock IME (LatinIME).
You should get the non-beta version here:
https://apkpure.com/touchone-keyboard-wear-preview/net.infiniti.touchone.touchone
Funny is that there is no IME-Menu from the setting of the rom
If an app, like touchpal keyboard, does not open the ime menu, I need to do it with adb:
Some xda users try the minuum wear app on the moto-360, looks ready for testing it on the omate rise:

I had no idea how to get the SU binary into the xbon folder but I think should be easily done on this stock-FW.
And as I am allready writing: just make OTA updates.

Use Vysor or Mobizen to extend your display to your PC to better access the hidden corners and menu items that the round screen blocks.
Applications are not available on the Play Store for the Rise but you can download them from apkpure.com, transfer them to your Rise and install
them using the File Manager.
Wifi File Transfer is an easy way to copy files over, as is Airdroid or Android File Transfer.
Good luck getting any support from the developer for this watch, it's at EOL and not even out of Beta.

I have heard. I'm a waiter and it's cool to be able to send a text without taking out my phone.. The olink app sucks to, might just resell it. Don't think this was one of my smarter purchases lol. Thanks.
Also anyone find the button kinda hard?

[Q] In app Purchases - The best way to implement?

I'm currently making an app that installs some stuff to make emoticons work on anything on the Android system, with a free part of the app that installs the font from the guys at No More Boxes, which allows you to see almost all of them, and then a second part, activated by either one in app purchase of either "emoji_keyboard" which installs a custom emoji keyboard, or "more_emoji" which installs a second font as well as the one that displays almost all of them, to see all but a few ones that you can see on iOS and some that iOS users can't see
Right, that's the background done
The idea is to use In app Purchases. However, using multiple guides, I have not been able to get them to work. I tried the Blundell guide, but I was left with it working but no way to respond do a successful purchase and don't know how to get it to query purchases manually
I also tried the official way, from both the Android developers site and the blog branched off there, but was left with force closes when the activity started as it couldn't set up the service correctly - the instructions aren't the most clear either
Finally, I found the AndroidBillingLibrary, but that's for API version 2, which is now depreciated.
So I ask, what methods have people on here used?
Thanks

New U8

Got my U8 today and here's my initial impression:
Plus - 1. Immediately went to English, no Chinese. EZ setup. 2. Several choices for watch faces. Several choices for menu icons. Some are color and big. 3. Love the vibration for notification. 4. Speaker while on phone good. 5. Phone pick up works good.
Cons - 1. Washes out in sunlight bad. That's a show stopper for me. 2. Have to turn off phone Bluetooth and use handset for a private call. Switch is in my phone app and simple but still. 3. I use Touchdown for email and it doesn't notify on the watch. Working on that. 4. Band seems a bit 'soft', not hard rubber.
Added Con - Not having the watch face constantly lit is driving me nuts!

I was just looking at one of these on ebay today. Are you able to reply to text messages through it? Does it have voice input as well as a keyboard?

I bought a Pebble. Regardless of whether the U8 has voice input or not if I can't see the face they it's useless to me. And outside that is the case. If that doesn't matter then I'd be willing to sell you mine for a cheaper price than you'll get on line. Wore it a total of 2 days.

LOL good choice! The longer I have my Pebble the better I like it.
Just got mine today
Hey Roger,
Been following another thread ("Elegance U8") and now this one since ordering mine off Ebay a week ago. Got it in the mail today, and I can see your points for both pro and con.
Here are my questions, if anyone knows. (yet)
I remember seeing what the actual phone OS is called somewhere, but can't find it now. EDIT: It's called "Nucleus." Have found some info and a sample download online. Might try and see if I can learn how to develop for it.Though the device plays nice with Android and ios, it's actually neither of those things. If someone knows what the name of it is, is it possible to find a tutorial on coding it somewhere?
The initial reason I ask is:
Not waiting for the manufacturer to patch the "shut off screen" function. I'd like to see if I can figure out how to do this myself, and
Enabling texting. Rather than a traditional keyboard, am thinking a sliding alphabet. A - slide to B - slide to C, etc. A pain in the butt, but probably less so than trying to use a keyboard. Picture the "carousel" from the Kindle Fire series, but with letters / numbers / symbols. Also, as suggested earlier in this thread texting with use of the mic, if possible.
Not saying I'd be able to do any of this, but I have limited experience doing some dev work in Android (through Unity) and am wondering if it's possible to self teach this OS, figuring that we quite probably won't see a lot of feature updates from whoever the manufacturer is of this product.
Thanks, and God bless.
If you do develop, please keep us updated. i like the watch but would love to be able to reply to messages. let me know if i can help any also in the development
Does anyone have the latest firmware for the smart watch?
Mine is: M28_KHR.FN1.V04
Regards.
Conect, was wondering if you'd gotten anywhere with OS development for this watch?
Is this the one you got, this is the one i have but the icons and analog faces are different... ?

I've had my watch for about a week now, and I gotta say, for the price, it's pretty killer! I wish there was more development for it besides distributing firmware and flash tools.
I've noticed that when you activate Google Voice search and texting with the watch connected, it uses the watch mic to pick up your voice. I was thinking it might be cool to find a way to trigger voice search and voice texting from the watch, since you can already use it for voice input as long as you trigger the feature on your phone. Have you made any progress on trying to develop for the u8?
Also, I believe I read that they're going to release an SDK for MediaTek devices, such as this watch. Might be interesting to see if anything comes of that.
Wish there was a way to add a count down timer to this watch. It needs to have the timer with a start/stop button on the screen as well a reset button for the timer. so If I set it to 30secons, when I hit the reset after the 30s is up it will reset it back to 30secs again.
I need to root my phone so I can turn off a few notifications that I do not want to transmit.
driver instalation problem
helo,
maybe in wrong thread, but if anyone could help i would be grateful. my windows 8 dont recognise u8 watch, and i cant install provided drivers for vista. i'm stuck, and i would like to instal firmware, but without watch been recognised its not posible. thanx
Is there a way to make the U8 vibrate when you receive a text message or have a phone call?
I was wondering if anyone has found a way to get different faces on this watch. I believe mine may be a clone.

Kingelon / SWatch K2 MTK6572

This is a complete replica of the Galaxy Gear. Build quality is excellent, looks like they use all the same screen, shell and band (with camera) of the original GG. Sealed non-replacable battery in a relatively thin body (about 11mm, same as GG1).
It uses MTK6572, has 4G ROM (about 1.1G usable), 512MB RAM. Pity there is no microSD slot to expand the memory.
It has only one button (to switch on watch / wake screen, and be the Home button). To navigate, swipe down from top = back, swipe up from bottom = menu.
There is a true Android 4.2.2 device and not some cheapo phonewatch with Java apps. There is access to Developer's options and USB Debugging (mine was set "on" already). This allows use of ADB to install apks.
No there is no Google Play store, no built-in web browser or video player. I am sure you can install these apps manually (I dunno how to install the Google Play package and I dont intend to do that).
Yes there is wifi, bluetooth (connects to my BT keyboard and working) and GPS (not tested).
I have not really tried out the apps, but they are pretty standard ones. I have also not tested the connection manager to the phone.
What I have done is so far are:
(1) Root the watch - after many failures using MTK Droid Tools, Framaroot, eroot etc., a friend gave me a tip about this chinese root tool called Kingroot. It is very successful in rooting most if not all chinese phones particularly those using Mediatek chips.
It installs its own version of superuser called kinguser, and its own version of su binaries. I thought what the heck lets give it a try, and it rooted the watch on the first run, and has no problem since.
Kingroot download page (Google translate) - choose "Kingroot PC ..." version
The program is in chinese. Installation was full of funky unreadable characters but most of the responses eg yes / no are the highlighted buttons. After installation, there is only one button to press. Just like all other one-click root programs, enable USB debugging on the watch, plug into USB cable and click the button, and it will do it all for you. Your watch should have rebooted when the process finishes.
(2) Back up the firmware using MTK Droid Tools + SP Flash tools - I followed this guide:
http://pinoyscreencast.net/how-to/get-full-rom-dump-stock-rom-mt6572-mediatek-smartphones-using-spft-mtk-droid-root-tools/
CONCLUSION:
This is a great find!! Excellent build quality, lightyears ahead of ZGPAX and SmartQ ZWatch. The hardware is similar to the Omate Truesmart / InWatch Z, except it is 4G ROM / 512 RAM with about 1.1Gb internal memory usable. I can live with this for the price of < USD 100.
You should go and buy this watch now because it is going to sell like hot potatoes. I am not going to test all the apps or answer questions about them, because they should work the same as Omate TS.
I am NOT a developer so dont ask me to do this and that cuz I dont know how to. I only back up the firmware in case I screw the watch up.
Hope that someone more knowledgeable would buy this watch to tweak and develop it. Then you can ask him questions.
I noticed this watch as well a couple of days ago. It looks pretty good, but the thing that still concerns me is the capacity of the battery, which is only 350mAh.. What are your experiences with the battery life so far?

[ ORIGINAL POST DELETED ]
Thank you doner03 for the solution - keyboard on smartphone will automatically pop up when you need to type something eg. click on writing aread of notepad app, when watch is connected to phone by BT and SWatch manager (smartphone companion) app running.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53405588&postcount=16
(1) Don't bother installing a virtual keyboard on the watch - there is no input menu in Settings to change keyboard settings and set default keyboard. If you use a keyboard switcher app eg. Quick Keyboard Switch, it will force close when you run it.
(2) Although BT keyboard works with the watch, once you install SWatch manager app, the BT keyboards will stop working. You cannot delete the paired BT keyboard from the BT menu, and if you paired BT keyboard and your smartphone, it may make SWatch manager stop working. If you can use your phone to type on the watch, there is no point pairing your watch with another BT keyboard anyway.
timtop said:

The watch does not come with any virtual (onscreen) keyboard. I also discover it is NOT possible to use an onscreen keyboard, because the input functionality has been removed by the manufacturer:
If you go to Settings, there is only "Language" (normally this says "Language and Input" in the usual Android devices). There are no options to enable, change settings on, and set default to keyboards.
I googled and found a post describing how to use ADB shell to enable and set (as default) keyboards. I followed the instruction but it does not work.
I asked in that same forum (the respected Android Stack Overflow website), and I got an answer confirming my suspicion that this function has been removed on this watch.
It is not as simple as the access menu has been hidden or missing.
It would be nice to have an onscreen keyboard, and I guess either BT keyboard or phone keyboard via the phone companion app have to do!

How the hell do I type?? (sorry voice search is slow inaccurate and need BT connection). Without KB, you cannot use the watch to browse the internet or make notes etc.
The SmartDevice (maker of SmartQ ZWatch) scores in SW development - they actually think and add useful things such as (1) keyboard input (through the phone and watch companion) and (2) "auto screen on / show time when you raise your wrist to look at the watch" (by gyro sensors).
(1) keyboard problem - although I can pair BT keyboards with the watch, as soon as I pair the smartphone with SWatchManager app, I cannot get the BT keyboards to pair and work anymore.
(2) auto screen on / show time when you look at the watch - I tried both "Autoscreen on off" and "Gravity Screen" from Play store, which should provide this function. However, both apps force close when I run them. I suspect the watch only has simple gravity sensor but not the more sophisticated accelerometer and/or gyroscopic sensors.

You might need to install an older or earlier version of "Autoscreen on off" and "Gravity Screen" if available, search for it via google. You won't get it from the default app store.
Earlier version might not force close.

after the rom dump process went through smoothly, i tried to reload the backup firmware: All the different parts of the firmware are there except "uboot.img". The author of the above guide also mentioned this file was missing, but he found out that it was renamed to something else. In my rom dump, there is no additional file which is unaccounted for and might be the image file. I dunno if you absolutely need this "uboot.img" to unbrick the watch.

I lost root after doing factory reset, and I could not regain root using the same method (Omate Truesmart root tool).
However, a friend gave me a tip about this chinese root tool called Kingroot.
Your watch should have rebooted when the process finishes.

download the google search .apk (newest version) to phone (i like to use the download folder in phone its makes it easyer to find in phone) with your phone open the smanager app use remote file manager
click the three white dots at the top right click send file select sdcard0 then find were you placed the google search.apk (in my case i told it to go to teh download folder) in your phone
when you find the apk click it it will bluetooth transfer the apk to your watch when it is done
Part 2 go into your watch opens apps look for file manager in watch click phone storage look for were you put the search apk (remember i used the download folder) then click the apk then it will prompt you to install app click install the there you go
p.s dont install every app you see because some apps will crash the watch even popular apps (mostly apps that look at your contacts these apps really screw the watch up) skype works but contacts in watch will no longer work once installed (untill you uninstall)gmail works chrome works google maps works (do not turn on gps you can only look at the maps you can not do a gps search with google maps) it will crash the watch gps function is kinda of a joke in this watch
or
in watch under dev options turn on usb debugging
unplug then replug in the watch to pc it will ask to turn on usb storage click it then the watch files will pop up on the pc drag the apks to the watch then just follow
part 2

yes dont try to root it its pointless at this point and risky
install google search apk it is the only app that comes close to a keyboard that can work in this watch
do not leave wifi on in watch if your not using wifi it will kill the watch very fast
i know when you first get it its a new toy and your gonna play with it for awhile but they ship the watch completely dead so let it fully charger before you play and remember if you try to use this watch as a extra android device to browse the web or emails 30 times a day and not just as a watch it will only last about 4 hours if that
If anyone wants to type on a field on the swatch, when you are on it , on the swatch manager on the phone will open a window to type on the phone keyboard , it is not necesary to have a keyboard on the swatch

[ROOT] Instructions for Airplay Screen Mirroring / Display Extension on the FireTV

Long time reader, first time posting.
Install requires root.
Squirrel LLC just released an android version of their app Reflector ($7). This app can be installed fairly simply on the FireTV, turning it into an airplay receiver for screen sharing and display extension, not just video or audio playing.
This requires root (instructions here) and the google play store (instructions here- they are for kindle, but work) before you can install this program.
Once you have the play store installed and you are signed in, you will be able to install apps remotely. This is much easier, as the play store is somewhat difficult to navigate on the Fire TV itself. However, Google will think the Fire TV is not compatible with Reflector.
To circumvent compatibility restrictions, download Market Helper and install on your FireTV (sideload instructions here). This will allow you to spoof your device type and install the app. I used the Nexus 7 as the device type. Make sure you've run google play services and signed into the play store before you run this, so it can read your id. The activate buttons are invisible until you are selecting them, so just press down and over until you find what you want.
After setting up your Fire TV to look like a Nexus 7, head back to the play store and set Reflector to install remotely.
From here, you can use any airplay device to broadcast to the Fire TV!
Couldn't you use snappea instead of google play?

I wasn't able to get this to work in Extend Desktop mode with my Mac. Since there's only a 15 minute refund period, I already got the refund, so it's possible I was doing something wrong, but the Play description didn't mention Extend Desktop mode. I don't see how I was doing anything wrong though, since the only settings in the app is the Name and the Password (and I didn't set a password). I did remember to turn off AirPlay in my other AirPlay app before trying Reflector.
Prior to this, I was already using AirReceiver to handle IOS mirroring. If all you want is IOS mirroring, I believe it was less expensive. Since it was bought through the Amazon store, it shows up with an icon on main screen (in my Apps and Recent sections). I don't recall if you can buy it on the FireTV or not, but I think so. A Voice search for Air Receiver brings it up.
Thanks!
Hey Guys,
Sid from Squirrels here!
Thanks for the walkthrough and the instructions. We're glad you got everything working!
We've actually submitted Reflector to the Amazon Fire TV store. The approval process is a bit more lengthy and involved than normal Google Play submissions.
As for extended desktop from a computer. It should work alright. I'de be interested in seeing logs from this to see why it didn't work for you. You can email our support team and they'll be happy to get it working!
Thanks again for the instructions.
So why root?? Why not just side load reflector??

Reflector is a paid app, and I have no experience sideloading paid apps / getting a signed apk out of one. I found it to be easier to root and install the play store than to bother with that. If you are aware of an easy method to get the APK out of a paid app, I'd love to hear it- I always pay for my apps, but sometimes I need to install them in a dev environment where the play store isn't available, and I'd like to know.
If you're concerned about rooting, I'd consider the advantages. Rooting is a piece of cake now thanks to Towelroot, and it gives you uped duper more functionality than you have without it, especially if you are using this device to run XBMC primarily.

Thanks for the good customer support. I figured it was the Amazon store's lengthy submission process that was holding things up and not an actual compatibility issue, which is why I decided to hack this together.
I own no other Amazon devices (and probably won't), so it's to my advantage to keep all my purchases within one ecosystem. You may consider adding a little walkthrough on how to use the google play store to run your app on the firetv to your page, if you guys aren't fearful of the wrath of Bezos. I'm sure there are a lot of people like me who bought the firetv for the android, not the amazon.

I'm not sure what happened there for you. Extended display was the default for me. That being said, the other app could have interfered, or maybe your settings in OSX weren't correct. I wish I could help you more, but Airplay is finicky enough as it is, without adding third party software. Maybe get in touch with Sid about that.
If anyone else is interested in this, my brother managed to get airsquirrel to work with reflector on the firetv, but it seemed to be more laggy than with true airplay. I'm not sure if that was the fault of his laptop or the software, so that might be worth looking into if you're a diehard windows user like I used to be.

Recommendations and Help With Apps

I've had my Essential Phone for about three days and I've got mixed feelings about it. This is my escape from the Samsung ecosystem, and I love love love the fact that it isn't bogged down with bloat. Generally, the PH-1 does everything faster than any phone I've ever owned, even the much lauded iPhone. But there's a number of functionalities I'd like to get.
1.) File Management: I thought this was part of the Android OS. Apparently not? I would like to find a file management app that gives me Windows-like control and navigation.
2.) Camera: The PH-1's native camera app might be good someday. For now it sucks. I'd heard you could "just get the Google Pixel Camera" and everyone made it sound super easy. Well ... I did go out and find the Nougat version Google Pixel Camera APK. I installed it. It crashes instantly upon opening and never works. I'd love to know what went wrong there.
3.) Keyboard: Okay, sometimes Samsung just does it better. Their keyboard app was perfect and I'd gotten used to the layout. Now I'm wishing I could have my Samsung keyboard back. The Google one sucks, truth be told. Most keyboard apps you find searching Google Play are all about being pretty or fancy or whatever. I just want the same simple functionality back: All letters and numbers on the same screen and the most common special characters as alternate long-press options on that same page. Decent intelligent autocomplete. Larger buttons. Extensions such as .com when they make sense and not when they don't.
I'd also like to get any and every recommendation for apps. Is there any point in rooting the PH-1? That sort of thing.
Thanks in advance!

You can set up the Google keyboard to display letters and numbers as well as symbols on long press. It's in the keyboard settings in your phone settings but isn't turned on by default. I don't know why. I turned it on and now it's usable. Go to phone settings, language&input, virtual keyboard, Gboard and preferences. Enable show numbers and long press symbols
Also I use file explorer from play store

Thanks for the timely response. Yeah, got the Gboard sorted. Weird how you have to look to find settings and minor tweaks like that. Oddly found that I prefer ASUS file manager. Strange that the Android OS doesn't have file management built in. Is there a way to enable full control of my PH-1 files and folders from my PC?
Next problem: Sounds. Once again, Samsung made it all so much easier. Need to sort out how to specify sounds for specific apps. For example, if I get a text message, I am used to setting one sound just for that and different sounds for other specific events. What I am seeing here is ringtones, media and notifications. And quite annoyingly, EVERY APP seems to be enabled to span notifications by default. Apparently, you have to block each one individually. It's also be nice to set my phone to silent easily but on a timer so I don't forget to turn it back on. Used to just pull down top of the screen and tap the icon to silence. Had an app to turn it back on on a timer called Shush, but it didn't work reliably.
Had another "damn I love this phone" moment yesterday when I realized that I can actually just uninstall my longtime nemesis, Google Music.

In the msgs app, you can set the notification sound for that.
For the timed silence, when you pull down the notification bar, you will see the do not disturb icon. A circle with a stroke through it. When you turn that on, you can set a duration for it.
I use Ex File Explorer on my phone and I use the blackberry keyboard.
There is another thread on this forum that's dedicated to the Google cam port where you can get the APK.

1. If you search on the play store, there are a bunch of free file managers for download. There's a bunch of them, pick one that fits your style
2. Did you get the ported one? Havent tried it but I don't think the actual pixel camera apk will work on any phone. Check out the most recent port in this thread

Yeah true, found that before. It's a lot of steps. I wanted and got something to stick on my home screen that gets me there in a single tap.

While you're in the app, tap the 3 horizontal lines on the top right corner of the screen. That should take you to the settings menu
More fun stuff. I would have thought that this would be simple. I dumped Google Music because quite frankly it sucks and I have always hated it. Shopped around and found a music player that I liked: Pi Music Player. Now when I try to play music via voice command via Google Assistant, it doesn't know what app to use. I'm offered the choice between Google Play and YouTube. I have looked and looked, but haven't found steps for changing the GA default music app to Pi Music Player - at least no steps that actually work. Another one of those, "this should seriously be easier than this" things.
Also, on my old Samsung phone, I was able to get the home button working in Google Chrome. Frankly, I'd rather use Brave as I prefer to not spend my bandwidth on letting Google spy on me. Same is true in Brave and Chrome: No home button possible.
Thanks so much for the help!
