Different update for T-Mobile pure ? - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there really a different marshmallow update for moto pure that's on t mobile ? That's why I bought an unlocked phone to start with. T mobile has always been bad about updates. Need answers please

No, update should be the same, only reason we haven't gotten it yet on T-Mobile is because T-Mobile hasn't approved/certified VoLTE/Band 12/etc for their network.

What's the implication of that for us here..would you install it by removing SIM & download over Wi-Fi or are you waiting for a more official rollout to T-mobile (or not installing it for other reasons people are complaining about like Wi-Fi+browser+call network issues)?

MM is running great for me. Sideloaded it when it was first posted as a soak test. That update was apparently for Verizon/Sprint users but look at the update being rolled out to AT&T users, its the same as the soak test. Either T-Mobile certifies the current update and we end up getting the same exact update as everyone else, or T-Mobile tells Motorola it doesn't meet their requirements and Motorola rolls out a new build with the specifications set by T-Mobile, which Verizon and all other carrier users will get also since the builds are not carrier specific and neither is the device.

Hmm so you've been running MM for weeks on MXP on T-Mobile with no issues & worst case scenario everyone would get another update later that meets T-Mobile requirements so no reason not to install?
What about the people complaining about slow browser performance-Wi-Fi-call-network issues?

My browser works fine. I rarely get any issues and if there is any, it's just slight lag on this website. WiFi and calling is fine for me. I do get band 12 when I'm at work in certain areas but I'm on band 4 99% of the time

So you have no regrets.. good to read.
I mainly use Boat+floating+Chrome browsers but occasionally use others..any ideas why people are reporting browser issues & you experience a slight lag only on this website?
Why is T-Mobile taking so long to certify the update?

Still no t mobile update. Thinking about pulling sim and doing update. But if and when t mobile certifies it will it update again any thoughts ?

Getting Lollipop on the Droid Turbo

Verizon has confirmed that they will eventually bring Android 5.0 Lollipop to the Droid Turbo. My question is this, as a Tmobile (Att, Cricket, whatever) user, will we also receive the update?
Does anyone else have any experience using Verizon phones on other networks, but stiill receiving the Software update when they become available for the phone? I'm not too concerned about not having root or an unlocked bootloader as long as Lollipop comes to the Droid Turbo with Motorola's light skinning, but If I won't be able to get that update when it becomes available since i'm on Tmobile, then i'll return this phone asap.

Purely a guess, but the update is done over the internet. So if you have an active internet connection, the code will tell it to check Verizon's servers for the update. I don't know that it would actually download the file over the T-Mo network, but if you put it on WiFi, it would really be no different than using the device on Verizon and WiFi, right?
Sort of like updates for a device that isn't activated anymore. You can still download the OTA over WiFi even if the device has no SIM, etc.

If it does happen to work like that, then you can just pop out the Sim and mash the Update button. I mean, you could probably leave the Sim in, but without one its effectively a "Verizon phone without a Sim installed".
You both make perfect sense. I just updated two HTC M7's over wifi with ATT's update. There was no sim and no issues. Thanks, I I'll keep my Turbo then. Love this beast.

Of course it might not work like that. But I would think you could somehow get the OTA zip and force it to update. I am not sure though.
So I'm not the only person using the Turbo on AT&T. I hope we get lollipop soon tho... But this phone is a beast holy crap. Only getting about a day out of it, but my screen is always on. Waiting for root and bootloader unlock tho.
As long as you can get the signed ota zip, which someone always posts, you can just flash it yourself

TELUS XT1097 Lollipop

Good day everyone,
I have some bad news, if the info i received is accurate, for people who have purchased the XT1097 from Telus.
I called Telus tech support today asking about any news regarding the lollipop update and the agent told me that the update is due out in the middle of next month - mid January.
I don't know if this means Telus has decided that it is in their customer's "best interest" to wait for a 5.0.1 build to be released but I am pretty disappointed as Telus promises the "fastest software upgrades" on their website when you read about the Moto X.

If only 1 carrier has it in Canada it can still claim to be the fastest when it's dead slow. Ok I know Wind has it now too but I'm not holding my breath on Wind beating Telus to the update.
Yes I bought into that too.... not sure what the implications would be of side loading the Brazil OTA, I think it is still a soak test for now... although it is the same model.

Telus has always sucked at giving customers timely updates. They decided not to release the Nexus 6 yet because of the french language bug even though there is a simple work around. They have a decent cell network and pretty good customer service but when it comes to phones they tend to lag behind.
It will be interesting to see when the Wind version gets updated - they are small enough I doubt they have any kind of custom build. They may even use the same build as Telus in the end. I see there is a Canada retail 4.4.4 build you can download, not sure if that is the Telus version or not. It might be one generic build for Canada and then a specific EFS partition hardcoded into the phone before hand for each provider.
Being the XT1095 and XT1097 share the identical hardware it would be nice to be able to unlock the bootloader in the XT1097, flash it as an XT1095 and have it update properly on its own as a Pure version of the phone for the rest of its life. At this point it looks like we can use most of the XT1095 firmware but there is no auto updating without fixing the modem files.
btw - how do you guys find the radio performance of the XT1097 with Telus so far? Coming from a 2013 Moto X I haven't been that impressed. I see my phone lose LTE and then get it back a few seconds later for what appears to be no reason. I could have a defective phone but it looks more like there is a firmware bug of some sort to me.
There are a fair number of people that have taken the XT1095 plunge from XT1097. I have been holding off just because I would like to not have to root the phone and loose the warranty so early in it's life. As far as signal, I would say it is on par or better than my S4. The LTE speed is better but it does switch between H+ and LTE often. The building I work in has never provided optimal reception though. Speed on LTE I have gotten as high as 68 mb/s outside. The S4 in the same location couldn't break 40.

Saying it is on par with the S4 is not saying that much really. My 2013 Moto X will blow an S4 away 90% of the time in terms of reception. Heck it can receive LTE where an Iphone 5 doesn't think there is any. I've locked my XT-1097 to HSPA today and it doesn't seem to have made much difference to battery life but I am no longer showing any time without a signal. I am not sure about other phones but on a Motorola time without a signal as indicated by the phone does not appear to actually be time with no received signal. It seems to be the time the phone is not using its preferred protocol(LTE normally). So if you drop to HSPA it counts that as time with no signal even though you have one and are registered on the network.
I haven't seen signal drops of any kind today with HSPA only like I do with LTE enabled. The antenna system in the 2014 X might just be more directional then the 2013 model. It is also possible Telus has 700 MHz LTE in the area I work and the phone gets stuck switching between that and band 4 LTE.
It is a shame Motorola removes the radio diagnostic functions. I'd like to know what it is really doing.
I was also hoping to have Lollipop before Christmas so I could see if the phones performance improves at all. If it doesn't then I will probably sell it and go back to my 2013 Moto X. My Nexus 7 2013 running Lollipop is faster/smoother in all respects then my 2014 Moto X yet drives more pixels and has a older/slower processor(in theory anyway, Motorola may be heavily throttling the cores).
even mexico beat us...
Looks like mexico is getting the offical ota now.....
Hurry up please Telus.
Has anyone unlocked their bootloader with the Moto website for it? As a lark I ran the fastboot command to grab my key and dropped it in and, voila! The option to request unlock key popped up. So is that a full green light? I decided not to do it yet since I figure I'd like to still have my waranty. Just thought I would pass that along to those who are braver than I in this case. :silly:

According to a motorola contact I have the final version for Brazilian retail is rolling out as we speak. No word on carrier versions though.
Sent from my XT1097 using XDA Free mobile app
So can we fastboot and load the mexican ota zip?
Will it work with the telus modem?
If you do it, will you get pushed future telus updates?
Thanks!
In theory, it should work. I have used mexico modem with my s4. But like everything else it is at your own risk. I'm going to get Telus another week before I do anything

There is another thread here where someone took a twrp backup of the . 5 and .6 release from a pure edition. They restored perfectly on the telus version with out messing with the modem. Could someone do the same with this release?
Looks like Mexico is up to version .17 now... android 5.0 lollipop 22.21.17.en.MX I guess it could be Telus is waiting until the version numbers stop changing but it would be nice to know what the strategy is exactly.....
A little communication would go a long way. Most people don't know or care about updates but for the people like us who want to know and purchased the phone for quick updates, a little bit of info would go a long way. TELUS should communicate better, it would be a win-win for them-us.
I hope all of you with a Telus account harass them non-stop. I am living the budget life with Koodo, so Telus doesn't want to hear from me...
Well I have sent 3 inquires from the website asking for more information but I have yet to get any acknowledgement ..... tried from home and work computer.... anyone else try?

Jeremie: Good evening, I have a question regarding the moto x update to android 5.0
Samantha: Hi Jeremie, thank you for contacting TELUS mobility chat support. I hope you are doing well today!
Jeremie: You as well.
Samantha: I can look at some information for that update.
Jeremie: Great!
Samantha: There actually is not any information about an update at this time.
Jeremie: It is strange since this phone is getting updated currently in the US, Brazil and Mexico. Your website mentions quickest software updates and it is the main reason why I purchased this phone meanwhile everyone else is getting the update but us who purchased froM TELUS.
Jeremie: I know its not your fault but would it be possible to forward my comments to higher ups as I find the wording on your website to be misleading.
Samantha: I totally understand what you are saying. We don't even know about the updates until they actually come out.
Samantha: What you can do if you would like is leave your feedback. There is a "how are we doing" link at the bottom of our home page which will allow you to leave feedback about our website or concerns and that will get to the right people who can handle this request.
Jeremie: OK thanks for your time.
Samantha: No problem! Does that help you for today?
info: Your chat transcript will be sent to ........ at the end of your chat.
Jeremie: Yes have a good evening. Thank you
Samantha: Thanks! You as well!
I will leave my feedback as she suggested.
Here is the feedback I sent them:
On your website, the information provided for the Moto X mentions that the phone gets the quickest software updates. The XT1097 has been updated to android 5.0 in Brazil and Mexico over a week ago and the US XT1095 for almost a month. Even the XT1096 sold at Verizon has been updated almost 3 weeks ago now but still, your agents don't even have a date in sight for when the update will be coming to TELUS Moto X.
The reason I bought this phone was for the quick updates as clearly stated on your website. As you surely know, information in this day and age goes around the globe pretty quickly. If you make a statement like the one made about the speediness of the software updates, you better make sure you're on par with other carriers around the world or it really makes you look bad.
I am not complaining in order to get any sort of compensation but as a long term customer I hope you take my complaint seriously and improve the way you manage software updates.

Users using unlocked PRIV on AT&Ts network

Hi all,
Have a question for users that use an unlocked Blackberry PRIV with AT&T service. Do you get updates from Blackberry or AT&T or from both?
Example: Blackberry releases an update, you will get it, but what if couple of weeks later, AT&T releases an update, will your phone also receive it?
I just want to find out if unlocked PRIV will also receive carrier specific update...fixes for issues such as: Signal, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling and so on.
I'm running an unlocked ATT Priv on the T-mobile network. It only updates through AT&T for firmware updates. Wifi calling seems to be working fine for now.

Thanks for the info. Your case is slightly different, since your device was carrier branded...
The whole reason for asking this is: I have an unlocked PRIV bought on Amazon and use it with T-Mobile currently.
Here is the support page that T-Mobile created for PRIV, since they will be carrying it from Jan 26th...
https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-24554
If you read on the page, there are some fixes/improvements to signal and VoLTE in the update AAD442. I just want to make sure, that unlocked devices on T-Mobile will be able to get that update from T-Mobile or Blackberry which fixes the above issues.
Ah, misunderstood that bit, cheers.

help: odin from 930U back to stock 930V

I am on 930U and trying to use odin flash back to stock 930V. But I got a SW REV check fail. The phone is bricked now. It seems that my current version is higher so cannot use the low version firmware I have now. I am wondering if anyone has the latest 930V or 930U firmware or any solution? Thanks!

I realize this post is a number of years old, but is this site still a trusted site to pull down latest versions of stock images? I'm not seeing a whole lot of other advise as to where to get the most recent image for the s7.
Yes I would think that it still is. Just make sure you have all the pieces you need to fill into Odin. Also consider flashing your device to 930U firmware. It's the unbranded one that unlocks all bands for any US based carrier. I turned my 930V into a U at the time to use on an MVNO network that was provisioned for TMobile or att a d it worked perfectly.

Thank you so much for your response! Here's my dilemma. When I bought the phone as a referb, it came with 930U. The only thing I really missed at the time was the visual voicemail app, but I found that samsung had a similar in their app store, so no big deal. However, now I'm getting emails from Verizon about them turning off the 3g band at the end of the year. The phones that would be affected are 3g obviously, but also the 4g phones without HD voice capability; the more I dug into it, I found that the 2 things you don't get with U are the vm app and verizon hd calling. I know that the phone is capable of it, as my wife has the same exact model, but with the 930V and the settings are right there.. So I guess this leads me to two more questions:
If I leave it as is, will is still work after they shut down the 3g towers?
The 930V receives OTA updates occasionally. If I keep it at 930U, how do I get the latest security updates?

Sadly you won't
Once you flash the latest firmware
You won't get occasional updates
Samsung has cut support for security updates since 2020
EDIT:at neither of'em

LG V20 US996 Updates vs carrier models-Wi-Fi calling?

Has the LG V20 US996 received any official OS-security updates, what about carrier models?
Can or can not Wi-Fi calling be enabled on the unlocked LG V20 US996 while the T-Mobile variant H918 Wi-Fi calling would be there by default & could be unlocked for use on other carriers?
Both http://www.lg.com/us/cell-phones/lg-US996-Unlocked-v20-titan & http://www.lg.com/us/cell-phones/lg-H918-Titan-v20 list Wi-Fi calling with uncertain fine print..
" Wi-Fi Calling** Use Wi-Fi to improve voice and data coverage
** Wireless service required. Product features subject to change. Features based on carrier program availability. Additional charges may apply. "
- Thanks for clarifying this with some real life experience
Bump, I would like to know about the Wifi calling as well.
I have yet to get it working on my unlocked H910 (T Mobile carrier).
Wifi calling and VoLTE features are controlled by the carrier and they will not enable these features on non-carrier devices. I'm assuming it's done this way to encourage people to buy their carrier locked versions.

I don't know about Wifi calling, but here is the latest from LG as of yesterday,
-----------------------
This is a staff of LG Product Security Response Team(LG PSRT)
As you know, the latest patch was released at the last December.
Unfortunately, there is no further schedule for V20 (US996), but our dedicated team is still discussing about next patch schedule.
-----------------------
LG's support for this phone has been horrible, Google's monthly security updates totally ignored.
I am shopping now for another brand that will update unlocked phones.
I like the features of the V20, but I am done waiting for LG to support it.
I'm running version 10h of the OS on my US996 which is on the April 1st Android security patch. I'm not sure if this update, or the previous ones, were offered via OTA. The images just kinda seem to pop up occasionally. See https://lg-firmwares.com/lg-us996-firmwares/ for the list. They seem to be making some updates, I'm just not sure where they're formally releasing them...

I remember checking out the original Nexus 6 in a T-Mobile Store but it lost out when I compared it to the Samsung Note 4 which I bought instead. I think Google sold the Nexus 6P unlocked online only rather than at T-Mobile but Wi-Fi calling is supposed to be built into Android so perhaps when inserting a T-Mobile SIM it should become available when enabled in settings?
I also have an unlocked Moto X Pure that I could test but there were some issues with a prior update that I avoided installing but perhaps that's been worked out now that it should have Android 7. I'll look into that but anyone here has the LG V20 US996 or the T-Mobile variant H918 with Wi-Fi calling working?

I'm running version 10h of the OS on my US996 which is on the April 1st Android security patch. I'm not sure if this update, or the previous ones, were offered via OTA. The images just kinda seem to pop up occasionally. See https://lg-firmwares.com/lg-us996-firmwares/ for the list. They seem to be making some updates, I'm just not sure where they're formally releasing them...

Did you install your update/s from that link because the download count is somewhat uninspiring..?

Unlocked phones which get updated best would be Nexus'-Pixels, my Nexus 6P always gets the latest possible updates.. currently latest stable Build number N2G48B on 7.1.2 security patch level July 5, 2017 with the option for the Android 8 O Beta program.
December Why are some people reporting updates in 2017? How worried are people about older Android security patch levels or are they mainly annoyed about not getting the latest Android builds?

AT&T refused to enable Wi-Fi calling for me because the device isn't "certified". I'm pretty sure the phone is perfectly capable of supporting Wi-Fi calling, the carrier just refuses to enable it. Unfortunate :/

I extract the updated partitions from those update files and flash them via TWRP. You could of course use LG UP (I think) to flash the KDZ, which is a the method used to recover a bricked device, but takes it factory resets. I've run 10f and 10h from that site with no issues on AT&T.

The AT&T store is where I went to check out their carrier model of the LG V20 because they are closest. T-Mobile network is actually best of all where I'm most often so I use their SIM. T-Mobile I've heard tends to be more relaxed than AT&T about enabling Wi-Fi calling in general but can anyone confirm this &/or anyone with the T-Mobile or AT&T carrier model or US996 confirm Wi-Fi calling ?

Good job but how long does all that take? Android really is so fragmented..are OTA updates really that difficult to push out like my Nexus 6P gets..why doesn't Google better address all the fragmentation-mess out there?

I can do without the latest Android version, but I do want Android monthly security updates.
I've had Nexus phones in the past and will look at the Pixels, or maybe wait for the new Pixel XL.
The Moto Z unlocked has gotten routine security updates, so I'm also looking at one of those or the newer Z2.
Headlines this morning about LG leaking a V30, just make me sad. A nice shiney new LG that will never get a security update.

Well, you could always use the poor man's wifi calling - Telegram - it works great and you can call anyone in the world for free! (as long as they also have Telegram installed)
The calls are really clear, just like a regular mobile call, and did I mention this is FREE

So you used the US Cellular Rom. Did it have any bloat? Did you get FM radio?
so i'm assuming my VS995 (verizon) variant phone won't be able to use WIFI calling since i'm currently on a T-Mobile plan ?

So far I haven't seen the kdz files on lg-firmwares website contain anything US Cellular specific, even though some of them appear to be indicated for the US Cellular model. There's no carrier bloat (minus LG's) but the FM radio is still not available.
Wow, I'm really embarrassed for LG! One would assume they would update the Unlocked version of the V20 MORE ..because they don't have carriers which have to approve the update. This is Pathetic!!!!

What's LG's excuse? Will the US996 or any V20 ever officially get Android 8/O?
I notice in my new US996 a 637.05 MB update Version US99610f mentioned at https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70431731&postcount=2 , any reason not to update it?
Regarding this thread's subject: I did notice my T-mobile Wi-Fi calling was enabled in QuickShortcutMaker but when I turn on Airplane mode then only Wi-Fi I can't receive calls but if I turn off Airplane mode then only Wi-Fi on (i.e. Mobile data is off in Networks) calls go through so I'll have to test over Wi-Fi where I get no T-Mobile signal but my Nexus 6P does get calls over Wi-Fi in airplane mode with only Wi-Fi enabled..
Also the V20's Wi-Fi hotspot works on my Windows 10 PC only with WPA PSK security but when I try WPA2 PSK my PC says the PIN is wrong while another Android phone can connect with WPA2 without issues (Nexus 6P Wi-Fi hotspot with WPA2 security worked with the same PC)..
Security updates are needed like a fire hose is needed and not providing them puts LG at risk of Class Action Lawsuits if "something" happens IMO based on personal experience working with an expert witness over the years. Not having the updates known creates a target to go after.
