App or functionality list that dont require root anymore!! - G4 General

We can all benefit from a thread like this to supplement our need for root or for those that don't want to root but want some root functions. The 2 listed below don't require root anymore and I use then on a daily basis.
If you have an app that you can share please list it and add a little description of use or configuration needed.
1) I'm running Automatic call record. This even works better that the rooted version that ran in Xposed module.
2) pie controls, this is a simpler version that the LMT launcher that required root. This gives me all home buttons and any app at thumb level on both sides.
What other apps or functions are you running on your LG G4 that do not require root anymore?

Automatic call record records all you phone calls in 1 of 3 ways. once the call is done you can add notes to the call if you want.
1st way is to recored all phone calls
2Nd way is to only record numbers who are in your contacts only
3Rd way to record is to record all calls from numbers that are not in your contacts... New numbers.
Usefull app as I use for my business when taking orders.
Hope this helps.

There are a lot apps by that name. I tried the first 1 but it didn't work. Who created the app? Thanks

its called Automatic Call Recorder by Appliqato..

I have found that SMS Backup & Restore (Ritesh Sahu) works without Root (maybe it always did, just assumed it wouldn't).
I use this app to daily backup all my texts and multimedia messages (inc. cloud backup) and was very happy to find that i was able to restore all my messages from my G2 on to my G4

All in one gestures

I use wave launcher so I can have easy access for most used app quickly from any screen it helps to be able to launch camera quickly https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobilemerit.wavelauncher

The main direction this mod is just the very thing. Make sure you do have a Google Voice Account. You can get one free at http://google.com/voice Just be sure to load the Google Voice App, There is two applications, one is the modern texting app from the Play Store, and was is an integrated VoIP app, it's from another project from Sipdroid, I am going to update the version of it as well, but after you have your google account setup with your phone, you can simply open the app and click Register PBX Account for your Google Voice, and a registry box will appear for you to setup another account. It's really simple. I hope to make a video for it later on. Also I will also include a boot animation for the phone.
Great idea! I'm definitely trying this on my old HTC Hero. Is it a complete ROM or a patch for a ROM ? Because the zip is kinda small...4mb only.

It's not a compete rom, in order for me to do that, I would have to work on each phone at a time.

The first app is the text messaging app, created by Google developers, and is already out on the market, at no cost.
The second app is a developer made app from a open source code for Sipdroid, I have modified the application and modified it to integrate it with the mod. So it's under Google Voice as a name.
I went ahead and made adjustments to the mod, it is now once again been reupdated, so if you used it already, just reload the back and do it again. I'm also going to make a uninstaller for this.

So is the text messaging app the Google Voice app then?
Here is something to think about - and it's actually kinda a big deal to me.
One of the STUUUPID things that verizon has done to us is to strip the VOIP settings out of the native dailer. If you use any of the 3rd party ROMS (well - any of the 3rd party ROMS that are not BLUR based) - you get that feature back in the native dailer. So what would be better would be to not install the sipdroid client at all and just use the native dailer to do all this.
Believe it or not that is one of my two HUGE complaints about this phone. If you want the VOIP in the native dailer - you loose HDMI because no 3rd party ROMS support it.
Now, interestingly, my HUGE 2nd complaint is that the lapdocks totally suck and I've never had any success with any of my lapdocks/bionics getting them to actually work. Even doing a factory reset..etc etc etc - the freakn lapdocks just dont freakn work.
I guess at this point (or pretty soon anyway) I'm not going to care because when my sucky verizon contract is up in a couple of months I'm switching carriers to Sprint and getting a Galaxy Note 2. I would get it on verizon - but the stuuuupid verizon folks have locked the bootloader on it and the stuuuupid verizon doesn't have unlimited bandwith and Sprint does.
My experience with VZ has been horrific. My HDMI didn't work so they sent me a 2nd phone. I sent the first one back but they claim they never got it and charged me $600 bucks for it. To top that off the 2nd phone's HDMI doesn't work either - and the friends phone that DOES have a working HDMI still wont work with the lapdock..etc etc etc.
Basiaclly they've screwed me out of about 700 bucks and I still don't have a working unit.
Ill be ur test subject

It's not clear for me... Does this replaces sms/dialer with GV compatible ones? or it is a whole ROM by itself (very basic one just for making calls/text)?
Is it country specific ? As I lives in India where is no google voice yet , which I eagerly wanted to try on my nexus 7 which do not have calling facility.

The best way to hide sms messages?

Hello, I need to hide sms messages from one contact. What is the best way? I prefer free app but you can post paid apps too.
Thank you very much.

I know there's a modified MMS.apk in Slimbean that allows you to blacklist messages and calls from as many contacts as you want. I've seen it in a few other ROMS too. You can just flash one of those and not have an extra app. Or just extract the apk and move it to system.

It has no additional icon, you get into by dialing 1234 then dial on the keypad, and it's opens it let's you put anything from one contact there (sms, mms, calls) and you can only get into it by using the code. Also, the default code of 1234 can be changed, and the app doesn't require root. Also gosms has a private box built in to it.

I can +1 that. I use Vault daily and this is by far the best Android privacy app I've seen. It was just a SMS hider, but now hides photos and videos and even locks apps now!
Plus, its privacy is polished to the extent that if you press back from the app, it also disappears from recents menu

Got the s5 today, few questions

I like the phone, but the 16gb causes a lot of concern. After downloading my music from Amazon, it's almost gone.
I can't find an option to put music from Amazon on my sd card, is that hte new kit kat "feature"?
Also, the test message preview on my lock screen only says "New Message", ther eused to be an option that gave me a preview of the actual message..is it gone?
On the Note 3, it had a setting where screenshots would enter auto edit mode, came in real handy for me. S5 doesn't seem to have this?
When I disabled my magazine, my home screen transitions isn't continuous ..I know I seen the s5 do this in review videos.
Did you root your phone yet with Towelroot? If so go to play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix and install this to get read/write to your sd card. The other stuff I can't help you with. Sorry.

Before you root you may want to look into fix for SHealth and ISIS Wallet (if you use it). You have to stop SHealth and Health Services in app manager and clear data and cache before you installed Xposed. You may even have to uninstall their updates if I remember as well.
Install xposed and it's service , then update Shealth and it should work fine. Once you get that done install ISIS Root Bypass 3.0 module for xposed and check it in modules and reboot and the Wallet will work fine after that.
These were two things that I use often and really had to get working to be happy with root.

Why put off until tomorrow, what you could do today, and prevent yourself from being screwed by VZW when they push 4.4.3 soon, and Root may not work with it?
In the text messaging app you'll see a setting to display the message on the lockscreen instead of new message.
Plug your phone into the computer and drag and drop the music to the SD or use root explorer to move it there.. You don't need root to do this.
No, the S5 cannot auto enter edit mode as far as I know, maybe clear defaults of gallery and set images to auto open in an editor?
As far as continuous transitions just use apex or Nova.

You'll have to edit a file using Root Explorer then if you disable My Magazine you'll have endless home screen scrolling. I use Nova launcher which already has the option in settings. If you definitely have to have the stock launcher and you can't get infinite scrolling to work let me know I'll tell you which file to edit.

I couldn't find it, too. I've installed SIP Switch Widget (from Google Play). The first button is an easy access to SIP configuration and the second one is a switcher, so you can toggle between calling over SIP, over your conventional phone system or by asking you to select which one you want once a call starts.
Does it work with SIP Switch Widget? or may tweak elsewhere?, I want one of this, but only if it is possible to use native sip client.

What are you missing without Root?

I thought I would start a thread and find out what people have missed not having root. What I was also thinking is that maybe some of these things could be achieved some other way but I just don't know how and others might.
1. Titanium backup. Not only could you backup applications you could freeze and uninstall any apps. I hate that I can't uninstall bloatware.
2. Would love to be able to long press the volume keys to skip tracks like with xposed
3. Xposed.
4. Clearing Cache (Delvik and Cache)
5. Full backup in TWRP
6. The annoying warning when listening to music too loud. Get rid of that!
I'm sure I have missed a bunch but those are the ones that I miss the most.

Titianium is my #1 missed program and the reason I started rooting my devices in the first place! Second to that I miss the "hold back to kill" feature and also call recording. Most apps are getting better at being able to save progress or data to the could or to the SD card, but not all. Once root is achieved, I will do it just to get TiBu working again!
For me since i was able to get tethering working i am not missing anything. if/when sprint takes it away i will be sad. Actually i am kinda of relieved that this phone has to stay stock and i can't modify it. I was a flash once or twice a day some times kinda of guy before and i was alway frustrated with how unstable Android would get when flashing that much. With the power this phone has it does not need most of the things we needed with the s4 or note's. by far the best phone i have had, It will be tough to give it up when the s8 comes out next year (since i am on the galaxy for life plan) but im sure i will swap it out, unless they pull another s6 and take the sd card away again.
CM based roms.
Full control of phone, ie being able to force phone into roaming. (Im actually having a roaming data issue that I cant troubleshoot unless Im in a roaming area and thats usually when Im driving so its impossible to troubleshoot).
TiBu and backups
Bloatware removal
General troubleshooting ability
I have been tempted to go back to my fully modded and custom GS4 several times now but havent yet reached the breaking point.

Thanks, I'll look into that one. Usually the non-rom based ones require the phone to be on speakerphone to record. Perhaps things have changed though.
Just tried it out and it won't work. It only records my side of the conversation and not the other end. Oh well
My primary reason to root in the past, other than bloatware removal and the hotspot mod, was an app requiring root that I have run on my last 6 phones, going back to the original Epic 4G. It's called "Call Master" (by "Fahrbot") and it is one of the most complex apps I've ever used, besides some of the Wanam apps/plugins. It's the most comprehensive call blocking app as far as I know, and that's why it requires root, to hook into the phone's services in order to catch/answer/hang-up any call from any number that is not in my contact list. It prevents non-contacts/unknown/restricted/private numbers from even ringing my phone, let alone leaving me a voicemail. They just hear dead air when they dial my number. In effect, it is a "white-list" call blocking *root-only* app, and I I simply can't live without it. The built in so-called "blocking" settings of the S7E seems to send callers to voicemail, which defeats the whole point. That's call rejection, not call blocking, right?
I REALLY NEED A SOLUTION FOR THIS!! Spam calls driving me nuts and getting a VM means they register it as a known active cell#.
Does anyone out there know of a non-root call blocker app that has a white-list function, AND will truly block/hangup instead of just rejecting calls? So glad you created this thread OP. Some of the solutions given in response to what people are missing without root are things I already know I'll try out.

The app says that feature requires "app upgrade" but I can't find anywhere in the app to purchase a key/license, despite the Play Store page's reference to in-app purchases...

Go to the developers page in the play store and it should be there. I think the "premium" version has a different name for some reason.

Geez, I'd miss a lot of important calls if I blocked any number not in my contacts. Businesses including doctor's office, frequently show a different outgoing number than the number they give you to call. People I know who use a different number than normal. My wife once left her phone somewhere, and a stranger found it and called me (my number was on her lock screen). It would have been gone forever if I blocked all unknown numbers.
