[Q] Cant believe im this dumb - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i deleted all of my system apps by mistake and now my phone is stuck in boot loop i have no way of getting into recovery HELP

Flash the rom you are on and voila.
And if you don't know which rom it is, then pick something close to it.

Google intolerant download Mode and Flash a Rom via Odin...

I have no access to a PC

Put the installation zip file on your SD card and install it from there.

You need a pc. There is no other way.

Well, if none of your friends have PC, maybe they can find a WiFi hot-spot somewhere and download a ROM via his phone. Then save it to its internal memory. You give him your SD card and he copies it to it... A bit of procedure, but with no PC, you have to be creative!

HELP!!! screwed up my MyTouch 3G

I have the MyTouch 3G with the Cyanogen Recover 1.4.
I had the latest CyanogenMod 4.2.7 with no problems. I tried applying the Enoch theme 1.4.7 and it put my phone in a boot loop. I tried factory wiping. I don't have access to any of the cyanogenmod zip files on my SD card because the Cyanogen Updater doesn't put it on the root directory of the SD.
So is there a way to fix this? Get back to any build of the phone to work? Can I access the SD card if I connect it via USB to my PC? PLEASE HELP!!!!
dannyfal!
i don t know if I undersoot you fully.BUT>>>> sometimes the SD card plays crazy,or get dammaged easy.In case you see the files on a computer but your phone is unable to read them is no big problem. If your phone is in bootloader mode and stucked there,it is a bit bigger problem.Have you ever applyed the hard reset ???It helps a lot. After that the SD card recognized by the phone as memory card2.So the phone is looking for the simple name SD MMEMORY.Or sd card. This is just matter of time. You give a name ending sd crad.bat and you can erase this bad sector data.In this case you might loose the program and your important data with it.BUT>>> you save sd card, and other files on it.
If you can t make it work coz your phone is in boot loader modus, than you need professional help. And a new rom update.
helos * hopr helped somehow*

You can enable usb mode in Cyanogen's recovery image by connecting the usb cable, dropping in to the console and typing (without quotes) "ums_enable" move your ROM and when you're done "ums_disable"
then "reboot recovery" and reflash.
If you don't have a computer you can use the console to my the files.
mount /sdcard <- Mounts the fat32 partition
ls <- See what files/folders are in the current directory
cd nameoffolder < change directory
then once you're in the folder where the ROMs are stored (cm-update, I believe) you can either move or copy them to the root.
use 'ls' again to find the filenanme of the ROM you want to copy/move..
cp name-of-rom.zip /sdcard <- to copy the ROM to the root, or use 'mv' to move the file.
EDIT: I am an idiot. You're on a MyTouch so you can't use the console in recovery. In that case connect your phone to your computer (which has the sdk setup with drivers) and type the commands I stated about after 'adb shell'

[Q] How do you properly transfer files while booted into android?

Hi as title says I want to know how to transfer files propelry while booted into android kernel.
For example when you plug in your phone vai USB and use as card reader I can easily transfer files to and from but the problem is that when I unplug and go to view these files on phone the file system hasn't updated and I cant locate them on card.
Ive tried the unmount feature aswell as a hot reboot but nothing. Only way I can seem to do it is to power off and then boot back into android.
Is there any easier way or procedure that I need to follow?

best bet is to load the files in winmo then boot into android
Dude that wasnt my question, obviously I can do that, thats not the point.
My question was the best way to transfer files while booted into android, if it possible then obviously booting into windows and back to android every time you want to move/access files isnt the "best" way and its inconvient.
I appreciate your reply but your answer was irelivant unless its the ONLY way which I doubt (well hope)
Does anybody have a solution?
As of now, the only good way to transfer files is indeed through WinMo (or with a MicroSD USB reader, with phone powered off or in WinMo). Most Android builds support USB Mass Storage, but I haven't heard of one that handles it perfectly (which isn't too surprising, considering Android runs -sort of- from the SD card).
So in short, no there is no other way at this moment that I know of.
Edit: There is a way: through WiFi! There are some applications available on the market that turn your phone into an FTP-server, I use Websharing (Lite) for this. They don't need an unmounted SD card, so they'll probably solve your problem.

Yeah I was thinking more of teh same route, Ive been using drop box for the moment but FTP server would be much better.
I was hoping there would be a solution to been able to access teh files that have been sent via mass storage mode but this could be just as good.
thnx for suggestion.
This is not a quickfix, but I was frustrated with the same problem last night when I was trying to locate the files that I just transferred to the phone. I noticed that unmounting, and remounting doesn't refresh the folders in the system. But I managed to find the transferred files after unmounting the sd card, and then browsing to the root sd card path instead of the mounted partition.
So, instead of mnt/sdcard/ you should look for the files in /sdcard after unmounting the card. See if that works, at least it worked for me last night.
Use droid explorer

Stuck on vibrant screen due to changing kernel

At a party last night my friend asked me to overclock his phone, being stupid I tried to and now the phone is stuck at the vibrant screen. Since I was first to unroot his phone, he has no other zips on the internal sd except the kernel. I can access recovery and download mode fine but even nandroiding wont help because that doesnt change the kernel. Is there any way to load a zip file for a different kernel or am i stuck using odin? Just didnt want to because it will erase all his stuff. Thanks
First Odin wont delete all of his stuff. Only applications, settings etc...
Second if you are doing ANY kind of modding, it is essential to know how and to actually use Odin. That way in cases like this a restoral will be no big deal. Check out the Vibrant bible in Android Dev. section, i have a Odin video tutorial that will show you how to use it.
Here is a flashable stock ji6 kernal. Just need to get it to internal sd. Hopefully you have clockwork recovery and are able to push it with adb.
If you use odin back to stock. Do you still need to flash the stock kernel when using other kernel?

i do but i have no clue how to use adb, ill see if i can figure it out though
Just use ODIN and flash JI6. His files will still be there and it also includes the JI6 Kernel. I don't know what Kernel you tried to put on but make sure you use the back support version of any of them for a JI6 rom. And finally, make sure you know what you are doing before messing with someone else's phone. Messing up your phone is fine, messing up someone else's is another story.
Moral of the story: Odin to JI6. No pit file needed and all his apps and settings will remain. Done it many times.
Edit: If you still want to overclock it, try Team Whiskey's new Core Kernel. It automatically overclocks to 1.2 without the use of SetCPU. And it already supports JI6 so it will not brick the phone.
URGENT! My phone won´t start!
Hi,
More or less the same thing happend to me. I have flashed my phone with the Core v2 Kernel ([KERNEL]Project Core v2 - Team Whiskey Production - 11/06/10 - xda-developers) and now it won´t start. I reboot it and it just stays stuck with the Vibrant logo on start up. I left it like this for about 40 minutes and nothing happens.
Can someone help???
cheers
Rafa
P.S I´m having trouble with the recovery mode as everytime I start to phone in recovery mode and select "reinstall packages" it tells me "Can't open sd/update.zip (such file doesn't exist)". Here is what I've tried so far:
- Plug the phone on the pc via usb. I then see the phone as a hard drive and when I open it it displays 2 drives, one is the phone and the other is the SD card (called simply SD). I copied the update.zip file and placed it directly into the SD drive.
- With a micro usb to usb adapter card I copied the update.zip file to the sd card.
- I removed the zip extension from the update.zip file (I tried doing this on the pc and directly on the phone via astro file manager).
- I´ve created an SD folder on the SD drive and placed the update.zip file there.
- I´ve created an SDCARD folder on the SD drive and placed the update.zip file there.
- I´ve tried renaming the SD drive to SDcard (the system wouldn't let me).
This issue cannot be this difficult to resolved. I really want to install I new rom on my phone and it's very frustrating not being able to resolve such a silly thing. Can anyone help?
cheers

from my knowledge and experiences you have to put the update.zip file in your internal memory and not the SD card...
from the sounds of it, you guys loaded either a 2.1 kernel to a 2.2 rom, or vice versa. a 2.2 kernel to a 2.1 rom. all this = instand soft brick.
if you can boot to clockwork, then you dont need to ODIN.
adb push location_to_new_Kernel.zip /sdcard/
then flash the new kernel like normal.
Read a lot about Odin and fixed it. Thanks.
Now lets see about installing the rom...

Can not root with Classical Method!!

This question may have been answered before but I just cant find it here.
I tried rooting my vibrant with the classic method described here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723479&highlight=issues+rooting+vibrant
It didn’t work and I got the following message:
E: can’t open /sd card/update.zip
(no such file or directory)
Installation aborted
I copied the update.zip file in DCIM of internal memory card and was still getting the same message.
I copied the update.zip file into my sd card and still got the same message.
I followed the steps exactly as they have been described in the rooting thread.
I haven't tried the one click root method yet.
Would anyone know what seems to be the problem.
Thanks.
You have to replace the update.zip file and flash it with recovery.

Are you saying I have to replace with a new update.zip file and repeat the method again?
I was doing it in recovery mode.
Use the one click method. You can find all the info on unlockr.com in the--how to -- (they have a nice video) If it doesn't work then you will need to flash back the T959UVJFD stock through Odin. Look in the bible or search in this website.
Why is your update.zip in DCIM? Download that one from the forum post, rename it to update.zip, and copy it to the root directory of your sd card.
Yea replace the update.zip with a modified one that gives you root access. Its should be on the bible(stickie post) and Recovery mode is correct.

Now my computer isn't recognizing the phone when I mount the sd card. It tries to install drivers for the phone and can not.
Ok, by root directory they just mean the internal 16gb memory.
Ok look, download update.zip. Rename it to "update" without the quotation marks. If you are running windows 7 you dont have to add ".zip" windows knows it is a .zip file, so again just name it update and windows and your phone will automatically know it is update.zip. maybe the problem is you are naming it "update.zip" and your phone is reading it as "update.zip.zip"
Anyways, I don't know why your drivers don't work, but once you get your computer to recognize your phone. Mount your phone to your computer.
Then go to your internal memory, the 16gb one, not the external sd card.
Now, DON'T GO INTO any folders, the root is just the internal memory, again don't go into any folders. Place the "update" file into the internal memory, don't place it into any folder.
Reboot your phone into recovery mode, and then reinstall packages.
good luck.

Nevermind. But thanks alot for your response and help. After looking around to find some alternative ways to root..I finally was able to root my vibrant using the method described
HERE
In the end, rooting was as easy as installing a simple app.
Now im going to do some research on ROMs and hopefully flash before doing titanium backup.

Ok, make sure you do lots of research. Read the bible, every last word of it.
Don't ever try to downgrade from 2.2 to 2.1 without having the proper 2.1 kernal, becareful with lagfix such as voodoo, and learn odin.
good luck
I have run into another issue. I can not mount my phone to computer.
With USB Debugging off... I dont even get a notification in the slide down menu asking me to either mount/unmount.
With USB Debugging on... I do get the option in slidedown menu to mount my phone. At the same time the computer shows a pop up message asking me to install driver software for Samsung_Android. In the meantime , I press mount sd card which by the way is still not recognized by the computer.
I dont have the driver for samsung_android to install on the computer.
Does anyone know a potential fix for this situation.
Thanks.

Dirty Flash new version Same Developer

If I simply wipe dalvick and cache and flash new version of same developers (SACS) rom, will I lose anything like pics and downloads that are stored on the device?
Normally no you won't lose your pics and downloads if you just wipe cache and delvik cache only.
But you shouldn't take the risk. Make a backup of your own data.

great thanks, what type of backup, using what? titanium? does a nand backup store EVERYTHING on the device, like the pics and downloads im referring to, or what exactly does a nand backup save? the whole reason I ask is because my piece of sheet Samsung galaxy 4 refuses to USB connect to my dell xps 15 (9530), a new machine. ive had dell, Samsung, and best buy all unable to figure it out..the phone just loops through saying "connected" then immediately disconnects, so I have no easy way to transfers all the files on the device itself to my computer....but the phone connects fine to my 10 year old inspiron...but the transfer speed is stone-age...
You can even copy all your personal files to external SD card then use any SD card reader to move it to your pc or laptop.
About your Samsung device not recognized... Then make sure of 2 things
1) That your usb cable is fine (may use another one)
2) uninstal Samsung drivers from device manager on pc then download the latest version of drivers (or you can uninstall Samsung kies and reinstalling the latest version of it)
Then retry connect the mobile phone to pc or laptop.

in the meantime, id like to dirty flash this rom asap, cuz my gps is broke, and i need it working. how should i backup whats on the device so i dont lose pics/downloads, etc.?
thanks for taking the time to help out
I even had a situation once where I could only see that there was a problem with the drivers through device manager when the phone was plugged in. I want to say I had uninstalled the drivers but they did not uninstall cleanly. I had to have the phone plugged into USB, right clicked on the driver, clicked uninstall/delete and unplugged the phone while the the driver uninstalled so the PC did not recognize it and start trying to install a new driver. Reboot download drivers and plug the phone in to install drivers.

As i said you can easily copy your pics and downloads to your external SD card then transfer all to your pc. By using sd card reader.
Then make dirty flash as you want or even go to a clean install.
About your apps and settings and their data you can use titanium backup.
But for pics and downloads you don't have to use titanium... Just copy and paste.

so you are saying i will lose my pics that are on the device, not on the sd card? i have nothing to externally connect the phone to. thats my issue.
I think you will not lose any thing but you have to make a backup if anything goes wrong.
If you have external card on your mobile phone then copy to your external card.
If you haven't then you can copy your pics and downloads wireless by using wifi if you have wifi router via airdroid app.
If you make a Nandroid backup in CWM or whatever recovery, Ti Backup is good at getting all of your data our that way as well. Once you have it, you can simply restore it, or if you have the pro version, create a flashable update.zip file that you can flash in recovery.
I've bounced back and forth between different ROM's with clean installs (wiping data and everything) and I've never lost anything on the internal SD. You can backup to be safe, but I don't typically worry about it.
BTW an app you can use to help is called AirDroid from the Play Store. It requires no USB connection, just WiFi and you can transfer just like if you were connected via USB.
Even if u did a full wipe u dont lose pics or music... Its on sd card partition. Ud only lose apps.. Ud have to wipe sd card completely to do that. Dl the superwipe flashable zip.. Flash that then rom then gapps after titaniuming ur apps
