What type of controllers are you guys using? - Nvidia Tegra Note 7

So I've never been much of a tablet or phone gamer, but it'd be a waste with so much processor and gpu at my disposal. I just got Drastic and GBA emulators so I'm having a ball playing DS and GBA games. I do wish that I had a controller though. So I'm looking to buy one. Right now, I'm thinking about getting a Moga portable or iMpulse. I could just hook up my PS3 controller but I want a controller I can throw in my bag cause I do a lot flying and playing some emulator action would kill some airplane time. What kind of controller set ups do you guys have?

I have a Bluetooth controller called phonejoy, which is also the name of the website I got it from. Used in conjunction with an app called bluezIME, free on the market, it works perfectly with all my emulators. I have emus for DS, GBA, GBC, Game Gear, Genesis, NES, SNES, and PSX. it will also work with some android native games, but it was pretty flawed back when it was still new to the scene with the native games. It may work better with them now, but I never bother with them.

I was looking at that one! I have some questions if you don't mind answering. Can it hold the tablet in landscape mode? If not, is it uncomfortable using the controller while it's closed? How are the buttons? (too sticky?, cheap feeling?, too much resistance?, etc) That one looks really portable and I actually like the idea of being able to place a phone in the center, but unfortunately I use my tegra note more for gaming than my nexus 4 so I was unsure whether or not to research further.
PS: Whoa. Not to be weird but your post has your location and it says Macon, GA. I'm a Mercer student. Small world!

I actually have the model that looks like an old ps2 controller. Nowhere to place a phone in the middle. I always invest in a stand of some form or fashion for my devices.
At the time I bought this one, it was only one of two models they had, and the other one was the same, just without the thumb sticks.
I never really liked hand held games, so that one was a better fit for me.
And I live in Dublin now, 45 minutes east of Macon. Had to get out of there. Macon has gone so far down hill since we first moved there in 97. You picked one of the best schools around to go to tho, just sucks that its in Macon.
Hope this info helps.

Disuss your success in first person shooters

Recently I've been addicted to rainbow 6 multiplayer on my xperia play. I've noticed that I have a much easier time aiming and headshots then other players... Chances are they are gaming on a regular touchsphone, scrambling to aim at me but die before they can shoot.
At a record of 1887 to 817 deaths, it's safe to say because of the keypad advantage, I am better then other players. How are you guys coping with fps??? I was never good at fps but I get records like 100-26 with 42 kills being headshots

I would also like to add that I am extremely happy with this phone, for the simple fact that it's for gamers.. Casual or not the gamepad really enriches the experience... It's sad that sony releases this when they are struggling and don't promote or back it properly... If it was samsung that released it, I'm sure it will dominate the entire cellphone gaming market
Sent from my R800a using XDA App
Ya they definitely released it at the wrong time, or atleast should of worked more on the release games...but i think its a fantastic phone, the gamepad is beautiful, playing first person shooters against any touch screen players does put you a step ahead, i personal like nova 2 never really enjoyed the modern combat, felt really awkward to play. Probably the best part of the phone is being able to play ANY emulator on your phone at perfect speed with a proper gamepad, doesnt get much better than that! Personally loving the playstation emulator and snes! - Kes

Owning on rainbow 6 is good fun
Im very disapointed in the way gameloft have applied the right touch pad, all they have done is use it to emulate screen swipes, i dont understand why they cannot use it to emulate an analogue stick like they do with the left one! Like on battle bears

This.
Swipe look is rubbish. It's the one and only thing that ruins fps's enjoyability on the Xperia Play for me at the moment.
Unfortunately Gameloft is only FPS option at the moment. Just like the Ipad 2. They make all these grand promises of great games like Infinity blade yet there hasn’t been any games like it since.
Edit: Has anyone tried Modern Warfare 2?
You guys are screwed the new PSP is on its way and it stole all marketing from the play. Actually the play had a great buzz as far as the web goes but that's as far as it went.

You are right but I did buy the phone for more. I was hoping for PSP games like God Of War. If it doesn't get any more support I may switch back to my 3GS and give this one to my daughter to play games on.
Finally got around to playing Rainbow 6 (great that it was free!).
Seems like top fun online.
Went in blind, straight into multiplayer not know controls etc and managed 11 kills and 12 deaths on the Play. That might not seem good, but it's good for me in an FPS.
Also turned the horrid music off, made it feel a bit like Counterstrike...how good would that be on Android btw?
Can see myself playing Rainbow 6 a lot now.

The PSVita and the XPlay are two entirely different devices. The Xplay replaces your phone, ergo you have it on you at all time. It's not a gaming beast like the PSVita, but the battery lasts all day, you can do all your phone stuff on it, and when you are in the mood for games there are a myriad of choices and they all play awesome because you have physical buttons rather than just a touch screen.
The PSVita is great for places where you actually plan to bring it. Like flights, ferry rides, etc

I only bought the phone for emulators originally. I didnt even care about the playstation store. All i wanted to do was play some snes/megadrive/mame games on my telephone. You can not play these games on touchscreen only. Totally uncontrollable.
Didnt even know gameloft were porting to the xperia play. Got alot more than i bargained for. Some (Most?) Gameloft games are very awesome.
Being able to play mobile phone games and even browse the internet with the control pad is way better and more fun than any touch screen only on the market atm.

You Serious? My 3GS with it's tiny screen is gathering dust.
The Play has had much better support than I thought it would, just GameLoft games have been keeping me busy. Its only been out two months give it time.

Does the low price of the Play indicate it hasn't sold well?

Unlike the Arc in the UK the Play seems to have experienced a sharp drop in price, it's not hard to find a SIM free version for sub £300. The only reason I can think for this is poor sales. Would I be right in that assumption?
Support from SE Is very weak, the playstation store for games hasn't being available for every country and the selection is pee.
FPSE are not user friendly is another reason. I guess 3rd party devs aren't interested in porting games like ff, tekkens, mgs, etc

I bought my play when it first came out for £300 so it's not that much of a price drop
Problem with the play is, its a niche device, it only appeals to hardcore gamers......
But as a device i cant really fault it, its fast, looks good, plays games great even though many would say it lacks power, the gps is amazing......
Think of it like the sega dreamcast a bit of an underated gem

The price has dropped significantly here in the US as well. Sony really bungled this one. The device just recently started to be advertised (and that was after the price drop and moreso as a "cheap" phone since its only 99 bucks) and even supporters like myself are a bit frustrated because there really is no support by SE here, while there have been 9 or 10 playstation game releases in Europe, some are not available at all, and the rest are visible in the market but carrier locked for some strange reason. The Playstation suite is not available yet as well.
Maybe they are waiting to market it once the Suite is ready so theres a lot of features and games up for sale, but at that point the device will be almost dead.

You can say that again.
The Xperia PLAY not only stopped me from caring about dual-cores, but it's performance has left so little to be desired that I finally get to re-imagine my iPhone favorites as real games with real controls, and have a device so versatile that I didn't just replace my phone, I haven't been playing my PSP/DS as much :\

PSP................... Oh s**t i majorly forgot i had one of those . I totally agree, i only really game on my Xplay, Xbox or Ps3 now. The play may not be a dedicated gaming device but it scratches the itch i get when im out and about. It fast enough to play anything i want it to. Enough said.
@ Cat_On_Droid. Anyone who doesnt know how to use it (fpse) will normally search for info on how to. Googling Fpse guides brings up more than enough info on how to use/set up. If you can use a normal emulator like Gameboid etc. Then using FPSE is not much harder.
Oh and i also frickin loved the dreamcast
I actually think that it is picking up on sales now. I know a lot of people who are planning on buying and seeing an increase of people on forums doing the same.
I think for the US market it really got hit hard because Verizon held back the update so long and also didn't allow any unlocking.
Once AT&T launches it's 3G version I am sure it will take off in the US market as well as being able to hook up to some form of the PSN with the 2.3.4 update.
Not sure about the UK but the price itself put off a lot of people.
In my country I could buy 2 PS3's for the price of one Xperia Play... this should not be the case with a phone that plays games that are 2Gens behind the current PS.
If they had priced it cheaper in the first place it would have sold faster.
I have seen this commercial on TV twice now

First, you gotta pay for FPSE, that does turn off the customers abit (I understand why anyhow), second, PS pocket is advertised well, not FPSE. So people Will think that pspocket is the only means of playing ps games for those without basic knowledge of emulators, roms(u have to burn the disk aswell, which isn't user friendly again)

THIS.
Emulators aren't going to sell phones in major quantities and only serve to deepen the niche. The iPhone sells so well because any idiot can do basically anything it can do without much time or brain power investment.
The only way the Xplay and any successors will break out is if there is a "killer app" and an easy way to do it. PS Suite being on the phone from the factory making it easy to download a large library of classic games, and connect to your Playstation etc is the only way a phone like this would be successful. People like us who tinker around with it and take the time to learn how to do things are in the vast minority.
Lets just hope that by the time PS Suite is ready its not already too late.
They have also way over priced the PS1 games. Like games that are over 10 years old with ****ty graphics are more expensive than newer games with amazing graphics and great game play.
Sony PS would make a fortune if they sold the games at $1 a pop.. maybe $2 or maybe $1 per disc

You do. But trust me people would rather spend 10bux on FFIX than buying fpse, getting the 4 disks to burn, use ecm tools, drag to SD, etc. You can buy PSONE game at any time. Where as using emu requires a PC. Oh and if PS suite gets a good selection the emulation would be perfect, unlike fpse which Requires slot of updates. And don't you need to pay again to update? Not sure =\

Psx games are almost always more in depth than any android game. But they still should be cheaper at like 1.99 each like you said. Gameloft games with ripped off ideas and bad gameplay with graphics that are good doesn't make a good game.
The Xperia Play needed the following changes -
1) Landscape Home Screen Support
2) Auto Brightness Dsiable Option
3) PsP emulator
4) PS1 and PSP amazing games to be available at launch rather than the shoddies
5) Alot more Xperia Play exclusives
6) Analog touchpads to have the option to "swipe" or "hold" on ALL games
7) Touchscreen Emulator Software so you could assign buttons to parts of the screen (meaning you can play all games on the pad and buttons)
8) Touchscreen functionality on the analog touchpad (so you can scroll with the analog pad when browsing etc)
9) Dual Core processor
10) 1 gig RAM
11) Possibly a 4.3 inch screen
12) Better Signal (Data strength is not as good as other phones)
13) FM Radio (data Radio is useless on a limited data allowance plan)
14) 720p Video Recording enabled
If the Play had all this, (which are not unreasonable requests for the same price tag), it would of been so much more successful.
Basically the XPlay is just a like an HTC Desire, but with a smaller screen that is often dimmer and a control pad.
It is nothing more than a bog standard Android phone that is great for playing a few emulated games.
If you do not want it for emulation, then get a Samsung Galaxy S2.

Less than the Samsung Galaxy S2, since that has better than the specs i mentioned and still doesn't cost more than a XPlay on contract.
XPlay was way overpriced for the specs you get.
It was hardware outdated before it even hit retail.

[Q] Why does everybody say 'Dead Trigger' is so great?

My experience is that the on screen controls are abysmal. Its hard to do 360s for starters. Navigation controls are pretty straight forward but can be rather non-responsive, particularly when you get into a hairy situation with trying to deal with multiple zombies. I dunno, I don't think there's anything wrong with my touch screen display but I've found the game to be mostly frustrating.
I really like it. controls not hard. 7in. Screen is perfect for these type of games. what I'm really luvin is Nova3. Especially on myltiplayer/deathmatch mode. Sonic 2 thd rocks. Mass effect great also. Wish storage size was larger so I could load all my games like I have on my prime. Only the best ones & emulators go on my nexus 7
Only thing I hate is the random 360 turns it does on me and I don't know where the hell I am.
From the Note to Nexus 7
Yeah, I thought it was just me.... The zoom is 0 or 100%, no way to go in and out, it either fires one bullet or a dozen it seems like, and movement is really goofy. Maybe that's why it's free now...

Yeah I get the same thing once in awhile as well.
As far as games go, it's o.k. - I enjoy it from time to time, especially due to the graphics. To be honest, my Nexus 7 game of the moment is Major Mayhem.
I use an OnLive Universal Controller, myself. On screen controls have always been a waste of time, so be glad that Madfinger was nice enough to integrate controller support, unlike most Gameloft titles. Keyboard/mouse support would have been ideal, but the difficulty level is fine for controllers.
Does it compare to popular console franchises like Halo? Of course not. But it's decent enough for a tablet game, and until bigger developers start producing AAA titles for Android, this is the best we've got.
Anyone have zero issues with this game? I was thinking the bugs initially were due to a defective digitzer on my n7, but having downloaded and played max Payne without any issues, I'm lead to believe that the game is at fault.

Since they ripped off my dollar and threw Android under the bus, I can't say Madfinger holds much of my respect anymore.
But... This game is meant to be played with a controller. It was even demoed using the nyko android controllers, so that is by far the best way to play.

Dudes!! With SixAxis, you can make Android see it as a gamepad, so when you go to Dead Trigger, it sees that you have a gamepad connected and automatically makes your analog sticks analog. You just have to set the buttons to what you want.
No need for any special profile inputs. It's so insane. LoL!!
I will admit that all 1st person shooters on phones are a little hard and impossible to play. I actually wouldn't them if they didn't have that GamePad support.
How are people physically playing the game? It's looks like many of you are using gamepads.
I've tried playing it just using the touchscreen but it's very unnatural and awkward. Anyone out there using the touchscreen primarily and if so, any tips?
This game does lagg on my nexus 7....I can't actually play it properly so I uninstalled it.

Same here. Only see the 180-degree character flip in Madfinger games like Dead Trigger and Shadowgun. Games from Rockstar such as Max Payne and GTA III doesn't have that issue. Definitely controller bug in Madfinger code. Being that Madfinger made Dead Trigger difficult without better weapons and has in-app purchase nag to upgrade weapons I'm not surprised they intentionally introduce the bug to frustrate people into paying money for weapons.

Try going into Settings>Apps>Dead Trigger and clear cache, clear data, force stop and uninstall.
Go into Settings>Wi-Fi, click on three vertical squares, select Advanced, and set Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep to Always.
Set the Display sleep to 30 minutes.
Redownload game. A lot of crash and no sound issues with new game downloads are due to incomplete downloads.
The random 180 bug is a known problem with the unity game engine itself which madfinger happens to like to use. Its up to unity to fix it, and madfinger said on their Facebook that they were working with the unity team on it.

Come back to this discussion after you've tried out at least an xbox 360 controller.
On screen controls are lacking.. when you use real tactile controls that don't force you to cover up some of the screen, it makes it a different feeling device all together.
Any controller like the xbox 360 controller, Sony Playstation SIXASIS bluetooth, or any other wonderful controller compatible with our devices stock or rooted.

Moga gamepad?

Anyone have one? Does it work with the nexus 4?
Im also interested in this. Anyone care to chime in if you have one? Hows the joysticks/controls when playing some of the top end games? i.e. GTA,Shadowgun etc... Thanks!
Works, it's just bluetooth. I personally didn't like the feeling of the buttons/joystick but I'm used to playing with xbox controllers so that's probably why.
I can confirm it works. I haven't played any of those games yet. But a buddy of mine is always showing it off with this Droid DNA. He has no complaints.
I got it for Xmas and it works 100% with GTA vice city, sonic cd, battle bears,

Awesome! Emulators here I come!
Yes I do own one, works perfectly but I do have to say that you do have to get used to the joysticks and buttons are really really loud, but it works perfect with emulators with an app.

I recently got an Ipega gamepad. Some buttons didn't work natively at first but after remapping them with Game Keyboard they work great. I'm currently playing Shadowgun, Dead Trigger and GTA VC with it. It's much cheaper than the Moga too, at least here in the UK http://dx.com/p/ipega-pg-9017-wirel...-ipad-iphone-smartphone-android-ios-pc-172963
I have the MOGA Controller, it works with most games. I just really use it with emulators though. I actually got it for free back in December, all I had to do was pay for shipping.
I like the idea of the mount mainly. The ps3 controller is convenient but I don't own a PS 3 and buying the controller would eliminate the all in one portable emulator.

I've got a steel series free and I can honestly say that it's awesome and works with the Nexus 4.
It's tiny, I have medium-big hands and I can play on it comfortably, I honestly don't know how they did it, but I'm calling witchcraft lol. The battery lasts a good while as well. I've used it with numerous ps1 games on FPSe and haven't had any problems. It is a little expensive, but I think this is one of those cases where you get what you pay for.
A couple months back (I think around Thanksgiving), just before the Moga came out, they were giving them out for free! It came with Sonic, Pacman and Modern Combat 4. Runs great on Modern Combat. Seems like it only works with certain games though.
I've got one, it works. I paid $5 for it and that is right about what it is worth.
I'll add that if somebody could get the moga to work as a standard BT controller (so it could be used with emulators) it would be FAR cooler but AFAIK it is semi-proprietary and only works with "moga" games.

You can! Use the moga universal app. I play all emulators perfect with this thing

There's also a new Moga Pro coming out sometime this year. They updated the controller itself and it looks like an x-box controlled. I'm gonna be waiting on that one to come out instead.

Works well with the universal driver app, but I really had the joysticks. Honestly they're not really joysticks, more like sliders. And I think is too strong a word. I just don't like using it for FPS games. It works better for emulators, but in the end I could get a cheaper controller for emulators.

Thank you, again.
I got the Moga for Jet Grind Radio and it worked well enough. Very responsive, but I didn't like the feel of the joysticks. All the Moga ended up doing was making me get a ps3 controller and a Gameklip, which I fell in love with. Then this led to me getting the SlimPort adapter. So now i just play all my emulators on my TV, which is all kinds of nostalgic goodness. The only advantage I give the Moga over dual shock + GameKlip is that the Moga is more travel-friendly (not as bulky).

That's beautiful, there's no way I could justify paying £65 for it though
The more I think about it i might buy the ps3 controller and rig a mount to the back of the controller to hold the phone.

Emulators, Imagine The Possibilities!

Has anyone else thought of emulators on the ouya? Playing retro games on the big screen again would be great. Personally this is one of the biggest reasons I'm excited for the console. Can't wait to play ocarina of time.

I've bought/pre ordered the ouya primarily for xbmc, but being able to pay some classics like shadow run and legend of Zelda, whilst lying in bed on a Sunday morning is massively appealing.
It's starting to feel like Christmas with the release just around the corner and I'm looking forward to seeing what the devs around here do when they get their mucky paws on it.
cooool
No, I prefer something like the Xperia Play for emulators, though its a bit out dated in term of performance. But the Ouya should do emulators really well too. I'm mainly getting the Ouya to use as an HTPC.
ditto.
I backed OUYA mainly for XBMC but the fact that I can run emulations is a bonus. imaging DosBox with all the old school Sierra games, on the big screen.
Emulate
God i totally love the idea of using emulators on this it's another reason i purchased it. On my phone gs2 i use the playstation emulators gameboy eveyrthing now to be able to do it on a tv.... man im excited
Search YouTube. Tons of videos of devs using side loaded emulators to play old school games on the Ouya. It's reality, folks.

Betrayal at Krondor
Honestly, there's not really more "possibility" with emulation on the Ouya than there is on any other somewhat recent Android device.
There is one bad thing. The focus Ouya team are now placing on emulators could result in unneeded focus on the subject and gaming company retained lawyers could be out for money. Kind of like when MP3 started getting popular and you had a lot of one hit wonders trying to sue for a back catalogue that nobody even bought when they were new. Saturday Night Live had a funny skit about that.
Ouya had better be careful, since they are pushing it as a feature, which will be like a bleeding cut in the water to lawyers.

I dunno about having to worry that much about emulation and the legalities for the OUYA. Heck, google play sells emulators that can be used on any android device. the ouya is that itself.. just another android device. emulation isn't illegal..
The emulation is not illegal, only the BIOS and the Games which are downloaded
are more or less illegal. These would have to be copied from your own console with
special equipment... nobody does this in the time of internet.
Theoretically this things could be free to download if the copyright owner allows this.
There is also my idea, that Nintendo and others aren't interested in forbidding emulation
for some (not every) console and that's why they aren't fighting against emulation.
In Ouya you can download and install anything... So, doesn't matter if it's legal or not...
Has anyone tested the Interworks Controller Pro U (aka Retro Classic Controller) with the Ouya (or any Android device)? I'm especially interested in joystick functionality...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727
I've sideloaded SNES9X emu, works good. Started playing chrono trigger, it nice it has an option to let joystick function as dpad.
I'm about to see n64oids performance on the ouya. If it does run smoothly then I guess I will be replaying Zelda oot
I personally prefer mupen64. Ouya is plenty powerful enough for it anyway
Emulators
Emulators, I hadn't even thought of that, now I'm really excited about the Ouya, mine should be arriving very soon... I think some companies turn a blind eye to very old emulated games because it keeps their IP popular, which for some franchises still has some value.
For now, i managed to work gba, nes, snes, genesis, psx and n64 emulators via sideloading and all worked smooth with posibility of assign hardware pad buttons to them
There are 3 emulators in the OUYA store.
1. EMUya for NES emulation with intergrated ROM store (I'm sure this won't go forever, pretty much illegal).
2. Mugen64 is an N64 emulator which works better than any N64 I tested before, plus it's already mapped to work with the OUYA controller and does so flawlessly. No lag whatsoever
3. 2 different SNES emulators which also work very good. One of them is already altered to work perfect with the OUYA the other one is a known one from the play store.
I got the ouya especially for emulation, because hooking up my Galaxy S3 via HDMI to the TV and using a PS3 wireless controller was too much of a hassle and had a crazy input lag. With the OUYA no input lags at all.
Feels like playing the real consoles. Finally.
