Simultaneous voice and data over 3g on Sprint? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know the s3 had it but it went away with the s4. I wonder if the s5 will have it. I know you can get simultaneous voice and data over LTE, but can it be done on 3g?
This is for the Sprint version
Sent from my GT-N5110 using Tapatalk

No, it won't. SVDO isn't supported on any U.S. carrier that operates via CDMA.
Here are the FCC documents for the Sprint variant. Open RF Exposure Info 1 and scroll down to page 8 of the .PDF (1.6 in the document). The hardware isn't there for SVDO.

What a crock of crap. Will voice and data still work on LTE?

So why not switch to a GSM carrier? Sprint is crap anyway. Does anyone actually use a smartphone on that network?

Can you find me a Gsm carrier for a single line under $50 that offers truly Unlimited data and calling without throttling and still being able to subsidize my phone? If so, let me know
Sprint is also pretty darn good in my area, which is what matters

My entire response was an answer to your question about the Galaxy S5 and only the Galaxy S5. I wasn't talking about any other phones.
I know very well that there are several phones that have had SVDO support in the past. I've owned several of them.

I'm seriously asking if T-Mobile has a plan cheaper than $50 which has truly Unlimited data and subsidizes phoned so I only pay $200 for the s5 and not full price or monthly installments

Just like nearly all LTE phones that operate with CDMA networks, you'll be able to do voice over CDMA and data over LTE simultaneously.

The old s4 did had the svdo but the s4 spark don't have that and s5 is a spark phone they disabled it on all spark devices

Dan Hesse would probably get on his knees for the iPhone. $69.99 for the iPhone 4 on the Everything Data plan would take Sprint to new heights.
I just don't want it crippling the network. I can see using my upgrade for it if nothing makes me want to leave the evo. Can you imagine the craigslist price on launch?
Wonder if they would put it out as the first 3G only phone with a premium data charge?

You bring up a good point. I can't see how they could justify a $10 fee on a 3G phone. Lets pretend that the iPhone is a sure thing if they want it, I could see them either being greedy as hell and attaching the fee anyway, or not carrying it until there's a 4G version. If it's the latter, you probably wont see a iPhone on Sprint until they (if they every)change to LTE or Apple includes a WiMax version (which is unlikely).

lol not doubting there will be an LTE iPhone, just saying they will make some huge announcement about how it's the greatest thing ever and brand it in someway that will make it look like they developed LTE/4G from the ground up, meanwhile they're the last one to the 4G party

Forgive me, I come from the GSM side of cellular, but why wouldn't this be possible? I can take an AT&T iPhone (800/1900MHz) and run it on T-Mobile (1900MHz). It should be possible to flop any Verizon (800/1900MHz) to Sprint(1900/2100MHz). Again, I am fairly new to the CDMA side of mobile so it is quite possible I am missing something obvious.

CDMA doesn't have SIM cards (well at least not here). You have to activate your phone via the carrier and ESN number of the phone. Sprint will only activate ESNs that are in their system (just Sprint phones).

It's easy with gsm phones cuz of sim cards (except the iPhone). We have phone specific esn numbers attached to Sprint's network.

That's the iPhone product cycle in general. There were probably a ton of people who bought AT&T iPhone 4's today despite the looming unveiling of the iPhone 5.
Funny how my thread got epically trashed by noobs and trolls, yet this thread that is discussing the same thing seems clean. inb4 trolls log on and start acting like retards.
As far as ESN cloning goes, from what I know, its only illegal if you use it avoid your payments and do deceptive things with it, but if you are actually paying for your service, then i don't think you can get in trouble for it.
The only reason ESN was even made illegal was to stop people siphoning money from the companies and such, but since you own both the device and the service plan, i dont think they can do anything to you. And im pretty sure if the cdma iphone were to be dropped, it would be unlocked within matter of hours, and then modified for sprint and all the other cdma services within a matter of days.
What i want to know, is if someone can actually hardmod the phone to enable sprint wimax, or verizon lte on it? (most likely not since iOS is closed source, but still possible)

Changing the ESN is a very gray area. BUT changing the operating frequency of a transmitter is a whole other ball of wax(which you would going between Sprint, and Verizon or AT&T, and T-Mobile. Once you change the operating frequency that the transmitter was certified for it loses it's FCC Type Acceptance. It is no longer in the eyes of the FCC a legal phone. Now doing it to equipment on bands outside the cellphone allocations the FCC really doesn't monitor, or enforce unless someone complains. Fart around on aircraft, cellphone, and govt/military you will be paid a very personal visit by an FCC agent (and in this day and age the local swat team, and reps from various three lettered agencies).
FYI the only FCC licensed radio operator that can modify transmitters (or build for their personal use) for operation (within spec) on their allocated frequencies are Radio Amateurs. Once that radio has been modded it can no longer be used outside the Radio Amateur Bands.

are you tmobile customers ready for some badass phones?!!!!

http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/20/...dts-seven-year-umts-roaming-agreement-gets-d/
What that basically does is TMO and ATT will SHARE the spectrum, meaning their phones have to have the same bands, and you guys know that ATT gets most of the cool phones and TMO usually gets nothing but Galaxy S series as its top of the line phone.
That's really good news, i actually like it.
discuss?
Is there a list of what towers TMO received.
Does this mean i can use an unlocked international phone with 2100 mhz HSPA+ on t-mobile and still get 3G?

I honestly can't answer that, but just opinion wise, i think thats a no. International phones have different bands than that of ATT or TMO, but if ATT gets a phone that we don't (iphone) we SHOULD be able to use it.
They aren't sharing spectrum, they have a roaming deal. Which is totally different.
T-Mobile has had some nice phone though, didn't we have the first dual core? The Sensation, Amaze, G2X, and SGS2 are all top of the line.
Just curious though, wouldn't this mean that At&t's already terrible data speeds will become worse, since more people will be using the same spectrum?

Most of the current international phones are compatible with ATTs 2100 mhz HSPA+ network. Not LTE though. But i think what this new arrangement is to use ATT towers only for roaming where tmobile towers are not available. All t mobile phones do support the 2100 band, so that makes sense. But Att phones cannot work on tmobile 3G/HSPA+ 850 mhz band.

Yep. I wouldn't go buying an AT&T device just yet. They're not merging their networks. They're just letting TMo customers use their network in some areas. This isn't a full frequency overlap of the companies' networks as the OP is implying.

Both rezound and thunderbolt can do data and voice over 3G cdma as they both have dual 3G radios.

it's not actually a limitation of cdma, it's a limitation of Verizon, and i actually believe it's an artificial limitation, likely to "protect their network and users", as they like to claim for everything....
i have done it a few times on my Sprint gs3, on 3g, since I'm stuck without lte in my city right now.

I was just doing some WiFi tethering and I received a phone call... Noticed I was still getting emails. My first thought was that my laptop automatically reconnected to my work's wireless connection. NOPE! I verified again with an outbound call... Data works on the phone and over tether DURING the phone call. Supposedly this was going to be a feature of EVDO Rev. A, but Sprint had not initiated it yet. This is freaking fantastic. I guess our phones started using 3G for voice
Sprint SGSIII blue
Sprint enabled this under their network as part of Sprint Vision. It is basically an advanced 1X data network that allows data while on phone calls. Only the newer phones with certain frequencies support it. Doesn't force us to use 4G or Wi-Fi if we want data and phone calls together. IPhones do not support this unless you're on a GSM network which Sprint isn't. Sprint is CDMA like Verizon.

My frustration towards CDMA

I just need to get this out of my system.
I own the Galaxy Nexus, unfortunately it is Sprint, so in other words, CDMA, this is terrible for me because according to Canonical there will be no official CDMA Support. Of course there has always been those amazing and wonderful developers that will try to port it but, a port is not the same thing as an official release, who knows how we'll get the Radios.
I almost cried when I heard the no support for CDMA, I was late and had already started looking into the Ubuntu SDK and reading guides and getting used to developing in Ubuntu.
I know many of you may say "Sprint sucks" or "Heh, that's what you get CDMA Newfag!" and that's pretty common because unfortunately many people find it necessary to insult people who own and probably prefer CDMA over GSM, even though it means more restrictions maybe it's the prices, unlimited Data, I don't know, so please don't make this a "CDMA sucks" thread.
I made this to demonstrate my frustration with CDMA, not Canonical, but CDMA, why? Well even if Canonical tried we all know they'd have some bad times, they would've had trouble with the carrier locks.
If you'd like to share useful non-flame opinions you may.
Honestly, CDMA networks like Verizon dominate the US because of their ties with Bell Atlantic and LTE coverage.
I personally think it's ridiculous that the most dominant US wireless carriers lock things down and monopolize like they do. Forcing customers to overpay for throttled and capped data, sign years of their life's hard earned money away in legally binding contracts, and they can't even give you decent customer support.
Google stopped making new Nexus devices for CDMA networks in the US because they know how immensely twisted they are. Canonical is smart to do the same thing.
Perhaps soon there will be better GSM coverage. Personally, I have a Google Play Galaxy Nexus on Straight Talk with unlimited everything for $45 a month. I'll never sell my soul to a CDMA crossroads demon again, haha.
Tapatalked with Maguro unicorn swag.
I have been using Sprint since 1999. I never worried about network technology in those days, but it just seems like there is no hope for any future where we have control of our devices without abandoning CDMA. We need to separate the devices from the carriers, and let the carriers compete on their networks, not on their marketing campaigns.
This is going to mean giving up the massive subsidy the carriers pay. But really, no one subsidized my car, or my laptop, or my shoes, and all of those are important too.
If we are all paying full cost for our phones, it's just going to be way cheaper to be in the global market for devices, rather than our little high-price, high subsidy, long-term contract subdivision.
Ugh.. I was hoping to port this to my phone, but I'm on Sprint, too. I hope someone figures out a way to port it to cdma phones.

AFAIK CDMA only exists in USA, Japan and China. Let's live China out, cause China Telekom is pretty much all the choice you get. What about USA? If CDMA is bad, leave it. Go GSM. Vote with your money. Let corporations get a piece of your mind. IF people started to flee from Verizon maybe they would start rethinking their strategy (even if it took them years to implement anything)
As in most things in this world you can't have your cake and eat it too
The world uses GSM. Period. We can't take care of people who ride their special monocycle.
By the way China and Japan are two of the most technologically advanced economies in the world. CDMA is newer and more advanced then GSM. Verizon 4g phones are for better if you ask me because I can use Verizon or att or T-Mobile on my iPhone 5. I may not get 4g on the GSM networks but so what.

Your source may be wrong. The VGN is the most popular model out there and the only one with 4G. Ubuntu specifically started 4G support. Engadget did not say either way and I trust them. So why would they skip over the largest dev phone in the U.S. market? Answer: they wouldn't.

Agreed. Not one intelligent comment in his post.

AW: My frustration towards CDMA
The US. Is pretty much almost alone with "pure" CDMA...
Most of Europe uses GSM and so does China.. But the GSM networks all use W-CDMA for their UMTS systems ..

I should have been a little clearer. In the US the most popular variant is VZW.
The email link there is just someone asking about it and forming there own opinion.
Nowhere on the Ubuntu site does it say only GSM. The actually specifically state LTE compatibility. And as VZW has the largest LTE network it only makes sense.

It's an email to Canonical, and a response from Canonical.

since we are on the topic of network technologies i just have a quick question:
Speaking in terms of LTE will Merica use the same sort of LTE technology as europe? Or are their LTE network somesort of "apple 4g" speeds?
Are they using the same frequenzieisiisifis?

Not sure but something I gotta tell you is that in San Antonio TX LTE is overrated. No kidding. T-Mobile 4G speeds are exactly the same as Verizon 4G LTE speeds.

Ditto in Seattle, where my T-Mobile HSPA+42 seriously beats the crap out of AT&T's "LTE" and is the same speed as Verizon's LTE.

[Q] Unlocked N7 2013 LTE on Ting

Has anyone been able to do this? I was thinking of getting a tablet but Verizon makes you switch to a share plan and that would end my unlimited data. I don't like any of their tablets either. So I was looking around and saw someone had gotten the N7 to use the Verizon LTE so I was curious if someone has got it working on Ting which uses the Sprint network.

No. The N7 is not capable of using Sprint's LTE network at all. The end.

Thank you for the quick reply. That just shows how little I know. I thought since both were CMDA networks they would be compatible. My mistake. This sucks since Verizon's data is way too expensive.

I'd recommend just finding a GSM network. The N7 works on AT&T and T-Mobile as well, and by extension works on prepaid networks which utilize AT&T or T-Mobile (Straight Talk, Aio, etc.)

Why the GSM recommendation? Am I missing something?

Well, it won't work on Sprint and you said Verizon is too expensive. Why wouldn't you consider using AT&T or T-mobile?

AT&T service is just horrible in my area. I could give T-mobile a shot I guess.
