Ghost App requiring permissions unknown warnings - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

My dad and I both have AT&T S4s, and he is not tech savvy or anything. Basically uses his phone for the minimum. I take care of his phone tho, and when I knew the 4.3 update was available after trying it myself I updated his phone to MK2.
He's kept the same apps since he updated hasn't installed new ones yet ever since the update he gets this message randomly throughtiut the day.
It comes and it doesn't tell which app is causing the alert to trigger and when he clicks View Apps all it does it take you to the manage apps settings screen...
I have gone through the settings in his phone countless times, even gone as far as to cross reference the time of the alerts to App Ops to see if I could narrow it down... But what am I missing!!!?
I have never seen this before and I have been with android forever! Has anyone else noticed this since the 4.3 update. Or even before it? What do I do!!!

If anyone can advise a fix, that would be so appreciated. I am almost ready to try a full reset, but my dad doesn't want to lose his data so I'm trying to save that for my last resort..

Have you updated the Knox security? Mine said that and then updated the Knox security and took care of it.

i get that to.

Hey guys
How do you update Knox? I can't find an option in any of the settings screens and since there is no "app" to open that is Knox I don't know how to update it. He is still getting the message
Oddly enough it seems to be triggered every time he turns on his WiFi and connects to a network.

AT&T Software started updating on its own? V42_1_1303_0_5

So I was hanging up on a call and noticed that in the "ongoing" notification, it said"device management - downloading software update, please do not" and had a little notification icon on the bar of 2 arrows facing opposite directions grey/blue one red. I tried to click the notification but got nothing, so I long press and looked at app info. It said AT&T software update Version v42_1_1303_5_1. I have tried searching this exact version number but nothing comes up on here or on google. I shut the phone off until further notice so I can see if this update is going to screw me in any way. Right now I am just rooted w/ TWRP recovery, but I don't want to do anything that locks this phone up. 32gb AT&T S4.
Thanks
EDIT: scratch that, i had written down the version number incorrectly, it is trying to download v42_1_1303_5_1 (not _0_5). Still, does this mess things up bad? trying to read that now.
Also, the watch on app out of nowhere is now putting its remote in the notification pull down at start up without me even touching the application. I like the app and use it from time to time but I havent touched it in a few days and now it is auto-starting on its own, strange.
Hey, I noticed the watch on app doing the same thing on mine. I didn't realize I got an update but my phone did do an unexpected reboot and watch on was running in my notification tray also.

It's just a theory, but it sounds like "Samsung Push" services might be doing some updating for you.

Adroid Users Just a Bunch of Lemmings?

These auto update/pushed wifi updates are insane !!! (no descriptions at all, I read transcripts of users chatting with att and they don't know what the updates contain?!?!
WTH !!! They "push" an update to our phones while we sleep, and now many peeps are experiencing major problems -
Why do you guys blindly download stuff without knowing the consequences, are you just a bunch of Lemmings?
(one of many from the "update" thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2661285 )

No matter what I do I can't get this thing to install past 31%. I've tried defrosting EVERYTHING, disabling SuperSU and enabling Survival Mode yet nothing works. I tried deactivating all Xposed modules as well and wiping the cache, yet that didn't help. I'm starting to think that once I get this sorted out it'll be my last Samsung phone for a VERY LONG time.

Seriously, I have been with Apple for years, and their "updates" contain a description of what is contained in the update.
Same thing with updates for apps, it tells you what the update is changing/adding.
Not with Android stuff, they treat us like guinie pigs with these "secretive" updates, and you guys just gobble them up without even knowing what the heck is going to get changed on YOUR device! How can you guys just blindly allow downloads to your device with knowing what is up before hand?
Yesterday I looked down and I saw a Samsung update halfway done downloading!?! wth !!! I pulled the back cover and yanked the battery in less then 2 seconds, and put an immediate stop to that silliness. (then turned Samsung apps auto-update off).
That thread is just filled with guys having problems, losing their root, spending a crap load of time trying to get their phones back to how they were BEFORE the update. Some guys can't re-root, some guys have done factory resets, to no avail.
So seriously, can we stop this blind downloading nonsense by shutting down ALL auto updates?
On the MacRumors website, the devs there would check out updates BEFORE the masses did. I always waited a couple days after the update came out, and I always knew EXACTLY what was going to happen with the update.
Here in the Android World, the masses act like a bunch of Lemmings, blindly jumping off a cliff - It needs to stop.
Play Store/Settings/notifications ON, Auto-update OFF
Samsung Apps/Settings/auto-update OFF, notifications ON

Security Update

Just got a Samsung security policy update pop up window on my phone. Said it will overwrite existing security software etc etc. I denied it as it may block my only possibility at root. Anyone else seeing this?? VZW Black GN4

Yeah, of course I wasn't going to accept that
Has anyone figured out a way to opt out of this permanently? I've been getting this popup every couple of days or so and even though it only takes a couple of seconds to decline/swipe away the notification, it's pretty annoying. So far I've disabled the Samsung Link Platform apps, the Push Service, and Samsung updates but the notification still seems to pop up.
I have been denying it too. Afraid of losing possibility of future root

I stopped getting the notifications. Don't know why...
I think you can turn it off under the Security section of the system menus. In there there's a section for security updates and turning off automatic updates.
Not sure if this will remove the notifications or not.
yeah I've been getting it every day or two too, I'm on att tho. can't untick the notification for it, but hey fun fact; if you ever wanted to see what every single permission in your phone was, look no further than this app, cause it wants them all -.-..
I never got the update. Is it possible I clicked on something that auto updates my phone without consent?
No keep getting the damn notice to click here to send security reports.
No matter how many times I click no or anything, it still pops up every day several times.
Screw you suckassrizon
Haven't gotten it. Hopefully never do
Got it but denied of course.
I just keep denying it even as it does not go away.

You're right Chuck_IV - Settings>Security>scroll down to Security Update policy>Security Policy Updates> Uncheck "Automatic Updates then go back and uncheck "Send Security Reports" id it's checked... thanks for the info, Chuck.

[Q] How to AVOID the Android 5.0 update on rooted phone?

I maintain several phones (2 Sprint GS4 and 2 Verizon GS4) for my parents, wife and myself. All of them have been rooted etc. Because updating to Android 5.0 would more than likely just confuse my parents who can barely understand it as is, I'd like to avoid taking the update on these phones. Is there a way to turn off the update so that no notifications come etc?
So far the only phone that has received a notification is my wife's phone, but there is a message that there is insufficient space for the update.

Long click on the notification hit App Info, then uncheck Show Notifications. That's the easiest way.

That seems easy enough, but since this is Google Play Services will I miss any other important notifications if I turn notifications off?

Well if you don't want to do that I just remembered you can simply change the build.prop. On the Sprint version you would change everything to OD2, system thinks you're on OD2, no notification. I don't know what the build numbers are on Verizon. There are other methods too such as FOTAkill.
I'm not saying I don't want to disable the notification as you suggested, I just want to know that I won't miss other important notifications besides the OTA.
I tried FOTAKill and it didn't work.
Changing the build.prop is a bit out of my league. I could probably figure it out...

I can't think of any other notifications Play Services gives... Play Store notifications are through the Play Store so those won't be effected. Like I said there are a bunch of ways to skin this cat.
The build.prop method is rather easy, navigate to /system/build.prop with a Root Browser and open up the text file. Near the top there will be lines with the build name and details, etc. (These lines will look different than mine on KitKat, but are just as easy to spot, I think there is a three letter one somewhere too that says NG2). Simply change them all to what the Lollipop build is called, save, sand reboot. When it checks for OTAs it will see you already have it.
Well that's easy enough. I'll give it a shot!

WIFI Calling now available

This morning I received an ota that enables wifi calling. It's about time AT&T gave us this feature. Not sure what else was in the ota but I'm sure they patched the security holes that everyone has been talking about lately. There's no information available yet but as soon as I find it I'll post it. Screenshots show ota software version and wifi calling.

AT&T cloud backup for SMS/MMS with default messaging app. It was syncing all day on my BFs G5 until I turned it off after work. He said it kept killing his battery. (I'd hate to see what the data is on his line too thankfully he was home on Wifi the majority of the day) It completely borked MMS on my S7 edge when AT&T pushed the update, had to install Google messenger to get a picture to come through or be received. It probably failed 70-80% of the time. May want to keep an eye on that if you use the default messaging app.
