[Q] 2G only mode? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My local Vodafone mast/transmitter is faulty on the 3G side, preventing me making/receiving calls, but 2G seems fine when I tried it on an older phone.
There doesn't seem to be an option to put my S4 (GT-i9505) into 2G-only mode....there is an auto 2G/3G option, 3G only option or auto 2G/3G/4G option....nothing else, and naturally, the auto modes put the phone into the (faulty) 3G mode.
Are there any hidden settings that I can change?

Try 4g Toggle in Play Store. In that program you will have an option to change this option.

That simply creates a shortcut to the network options on the phone!
It doesn't do anything else, so what's the point?
Can anyone suggest anything else to help me?

Do you not have a GSM only option in mobile network settings? Is that not anything below 3G?

Weird, my I9505 is through Virgin Mobile but is unlocked, I assumed all variants had the same network modes, excluding LTE/non-LTE.

There is an app to get you into service mode at the below link. Not sure if gsm can be enabled here or not, be very careful with what settings you change here.

I think the Dropbox link doesn't work for me because the full link is not showing, i.e. there is a ... in the middle of the url.
I just tried the google link and it's asking for permission to access this from you.

Thanks.
I've now got and installed the app, but it looks complicated in terms of what I'm trying to achieve.
I've no idea what Bands to select & what issues it could cause if I muckup.
Is there no easier way, or a "nicer" app I could try?

This is still a major issue for me and no-one seems to be able to point me in the right direction.
I was wondering....if I simply turn off "Mobile Data" in the settings, will that automatically put the phone in GSM (non 3G) mode & let me achieve my aim??
I've just tried doing this...there is now no letter next to the signal bars, but the phone can take a call.

Network Mode menu

Hello devs and modders, this http://samsung-updates.com/details/16850/Galaxy_Note_3_Snapdragon/SM-N9005/ZVV/N9005VJUDMJ6.html rom (ZVV, from Brazil) has an option in the Network mode that I like very much to have, LTE ONLY, so I can tether my notebook for gaming when not in home, I know the side effects of this mode and I know I can access a hidden menu to change to that mode [takes too many steps tough], but I would like to have that menu option on other roms or even better any rom with a mod of any kind.
So can someone help me with that?
Cheers
Just edit /data/property/persist.radio.lteon and change it to true (and reboot).

If that is the case it's possible that the SIM card hasn't been updated, or the network provider isn't transmitting any LTE bands?
In my case, the provider is just starting to test 4G networks and I had to change the property and ask for a newer sim card (not sure if that is the case, but I did read somewhere that it might help).

Any way to choose 2G only on the G2?

I don't have that option available on settings.
I have automatic 2G/3G/4G, automatic 2G/3G and 3G only.
Thanks.

Tried that but I get a message saying this option/application is not available on this phone.
Is it because my G2 is carrier branded?
Would a unbranded stock rom fix this and let me change it?
Try this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=myc.phone.PhoneInfo It does the same thing as the code.

How did you do that? How can I enable that option?
I guess it was deleted but still shows up for me since I already have it installed. The developer has 2 more versions, this one seems to be ad supported: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tw.myc.android.PhoneInfoV2Ad
I guess this option might be available if I flash and try other custom roms or kdz from other regions.

I read that the antenna is located on the bottom right side of the phone and it's like the antennagate of the iPhone 4. I think they're right.

So, uh... for me, after I flashed this ROM, everything works perfectly right off the bat! No settings changes needed, as soon as it booted up for the first time I had network connectivity, data is working, LTE working, calls (incoming and outgoing) working, texts (receiving and sending) all working perfectly, camera working, wifi working... and it's lightning fast, it's like a brand new phone!
EDIT: Actually I spoke too soon... for some reason trying to send a text just says "message not sent", but I can still receive texts fine. Looking into this issue now.

So here's the latest build (Dec. 12), I removed the device restriction so it can be flashed on our phone. https://docs.google.com/uc?id=0B3wI5Dyn072PVlJxRTVGRXgySHM&export=download
This build fixes the market incompatibility error, among other things. For some reason, sending texts still won't work for me, but receiving texts does.

Phone to phone can change depending on the radio installed on the phone. Your SIM card would have little to do with networks used as your SIM card only registers your phone with compatible networks depending on the phone's radios (hardware). So it's more dependent in the phone, not the SIM card.

If I'm not mistaken, a radio can only be subscribed to one network at a time. Not being too familiar with dual SIM card phones (not really all that common in the states) I wouldn't know what capability there is to switch between the network options such as voLTE.
Sent from my LG-H872 using Tapatalk
Volte is voice over lte, au if I cannot get the SIM card I use for calling to work on 4g instead of 3g as it is now, I'll never get Volte.
Just turn on advance calling.

Hello, I have volte enabled on my lg g6 vodafone italy original branded phone,
How can I enable Volte toggle under quick settings when you drag down the top bar? I can't find how to enable in the secret menu...
In fulmics rom it is enabled.... how to enable it with secret menu ? thanks!
I have MetroPCS an I have both the wifi calling feature and the volte option as well however if I have either of those enabled I can't receive calls the person gets a busy signal. Also I have the name I'd service from metro but when someone calls it shows some weird symbols instead of the actual name. The symbols are a black diamond with a question mark inside of it. I have called metro and they haven't been able to figure it out and suggestions? I have tried a factory reset and it still does the same thing.
I think VoLTE is inbuilt in your phone. Still if you did like to find out the option then download 4g switcher from play store and it will show you the option to switch between two.

The app you mentioned "4g switcher" does not work on my G6. A prompt message quickly appears after app launching.
on my H870 in South Africa (ZAF) if I run the stock firmware (from my carrier) I have VoLTE by default, but if I flash the Open EU .kdz then no VoLTE on the phone, so its definitely carrier related.

how to restrict network to lte?

I'm at a place where mobile connections are poor. I used to have an option in the past where I could choose only lte. That worked. In the Rom I use now this is not included. Only switch automatically 2g/3g/4g. Which ends up constantly switching to E. I have to toggle plane mode and it goes back to lte. Is there a way to limit to 4g so that it doesn't switch? Sorry for the bad English

it's not a specific question for the Rom. I thought there may be a way to do it in buildprop.
I can chose only 2g, only 3g, and switch automatically 2g/3g/4g. That's standard. What I need is only 4g.
