Music Volume changing? - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Im running into this weird situation with my GN3, when listening to music through the google music player I get a massive volume drop when the track changes, or when i rewind the track or even just put it to a different part of the song.
heres a video taken with my wifes GN3
as you can see its a really drastic volume change. I've uninstalled it and reinstalled and tried shutdown and everything. My wifes GN3 doesnt do this.
this also happens when using headphones as well.
Basically is this a software issue or a hardware warranty claim that I should go to verizon for? This is a stock non rooted GN3
thanks for the help in advance!

So I went to Verizon to talk to them. Of course I get someone who doesn't know anything lol. Anyways she has me do a hard reset (lame) so I do. The problem goes away and I say ok. No problem if it comes back I'll be back.
everything was fine until this morning when I played with my music again.
The source of the problem is the equalizer. Hard reset puts the eq settings back to off. So this morning I turned on the equalizer and it did it again! I turned off the equalizer again and it worked normally again.
Needless to say this is weird. Can you are if this is the same with yours? I will go back to Verizon when I get a chance.

Music Volume changing? (replace the EQ program?)
I _think_ I was having the same type of issue. The EQ in Google Music is an interchangeable app, so I am trying a different one which so far doesn't seem to have volume issues, but it's early yet. Apologies if I am misunderstanding the problem but I recommend trying a different EQ app from the Play store. You can have several but only one can be active at a time and Google Music will use it (when you go to EQ in Google Music settings whatever EQ app you have active under Settings > Sound > Music Effects is what opens).

I'm having the same issue. I'll be listening to music with headphones on and when a new track streets the volume gets cranked super loud. Is an exchange in order?

hoping it is software

I eventually started having the same problem again with the new EQ app. I disabled EQ and it hasn't happened since. I plan to live without an EQ and wait for a fix, hoping it is software.

I had this exact experience. I've had other issues too, an issue where my Alarm app crashes every so often, and where my phone (when I set it down sometimes) will become unresponsive (screen off) and not let me restart it without a battery pull.
I went to Verizon on 11/26 and had a Factory Reset, thinking that perhaps the recent OTA update could be the culprit, a reasonable theory. After the Factory Reset, the Alarm issue has not happened again (encouraging) but the unresponsive screen issue has (not great). The Music issue I have is the exact same, where in the store naturally it worked, but I hadn't though to turn on the equalizer. I have tried other Play equalizers to the same result.
I have since went back in (yesterday) to have them send me a Manufacturer's Refurb (I haven't Rooted yet), and will receive that on Wednesday (hopefully, if FedEx isn't lame). This will allow me to verify if it is hardware (or if i'm just unlucky and get 2 hardware issue units).
That said, i'll offer this: Today I tried uninstalling many apps I installed, just to try to rule out stuff, no luck. I tried then clearing the Data / Cache for Google Music, and then 'reverting' to the Factory installed version. The issue was gone (and the stock equalizer was on). I have since updated again to the current version, and the issue is still gone. I am wondering if there is a time component to it, and will keep checking.
I do have a separate thread going with all of my observations (i'd link but i'm not a real boy yet), called 'Note 3 - Alarm / Music Issues?' or something, feel free to add your thoughts if you want, and i'll keep an eye on this thread too for info. I want this fixed! (My Galaxy Nexus didn't have this issue...)

In for updates. Mine is doing the same thing.

I have the same exact problem. It happens when using headphones as well as streaming via bluetooth, so seems a software issue to me.

It hasn't happened to me in a while now (knock on wood). Only thing I can think of is keep all your apps up to date
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using xda app-developers app

Happens to me on Google Music. If I pause then restart the song it goes back. Since so many of us have the problem it might be something with 4.3.
Sent from my SM-N900V using xda app-developers app

I notice mine doing that randomly if I get a text or other types of notifications while listening to Pandora it cuts volume and most of the time it will fix itself with the next notification that chimes in, it goes back to normal volume
Sent from my SM-N900V using xda app-developers app

Unfortunately, as per the version at least, i've seen it present in the version that is stock/pre-loaded on the Note 3 as well as the most current / up to date version.
My refurb did not arrive yesterday but hopefully today, so i'll have a second unit to (ideally) confirm if it could be hardware or is more likely software. I feel I have seen similar reports of issues on the S4, so it is leaning towards a software / 4.3 issue, but i'm surprised that it's not more consistently occurring. (I have at least one coworker who cannot recreate the issue).

Any update on this?
Spotify does not have this problem... Has to be with the google play music app...

Speaker Blown?

I have a CDMA Hero and it's rooted and running aospcm7 gingerbread rom. Before flashing a rom I always wipe data, cache, etc and they always start up fine. Yesterday I was listening to music and it just stopped making noise. Yes, I know you should adjust the min/max cpu speed so it doesn't start skipping. But this time it just stopped making noise completely. Music doesn't play, no volume from videos, ringtones, etc. Don't know if it is a system issue or hardware. Everything else works fine except for that, even the dial tones work. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this or what the problem could be?
Thanks
That's a great question. Have you tried to reinstall the Rom?

Yup, switched to two different roms. But after much research on hero problems, it seems a blown speaker is common? If that is just the deal I'll just bring it to the sprint store to replace. And should I flash back to a stock rom?
Thanks for the quick reply

Yes it is fairly common, and most Sprint repair centers have the part in stock. Takes 15 minutes to replace, and in my case, they did not even have to do a factory reset (lol, not that I cared, as there was no data to wipe!) I RUU'd just before I drove to Sprint and had my laptop with adb in the truck and a nandroid on my sdcard. However, for me, sound did not just stop abruptly, it just rapidly degraded in quality.
In my opinion, rerooting and restoring a nandroid takes just minutes, and eliminates any chance of Sprint denying you service. Also, running the RUU will confirm that the issue is hardware related, if you have any doubt. That's your call though, most people say that Sprint did not care that they were rooted.

When you say that the dial tone works, are you saying with the speaker on the back? Like speaker phone? And does music work with headphones? It is quite common for the speaker in the back to blow. I've heard that since hardware and completely not related to softwate, you don't need to go back to stock rom. Strongly suggest you do though. They may make a note that you have voided your warranty. And that is no bueno.

Thanks for the help and info guys. It was weird because my nephew was listening to music on my phone with headphones, good thing that wasn't broken too, but then it started to play through the speaker for a bit. So I am guessing it is just a hardware problem. And never mind about the dial tones, guess the speaker was fuzzing in and out. But I will go into the Sprint store and let you all know how it goes.
Thanks again
Took it into a Sprint store earlier and everything is fine and working. Didn't have time to flash to a stock rom, but it didn't seem like they minded. They just replaced the speaker and called it to see if it worked. Thanks for the advice guys

Mine has been doing this too. I don't even have to push any buttons sometimes. It's happened when all I do is move my phone. I know it's not my headphones 'cause it's done it without anything plugged in. I've tried the clean ROM and Nuckin's ROM
It seems to do that too when I touch the grip sensor......

I'm not sure if this is related, but I've noticed sounds in general are messed up.....like when I plug the phone into a charger...the confirmation beep is almost never smooth and clean....there is static or distortion in the sound effect......my ringer too....really all the sound out of the speaker that I've listened to. It is minor but still annoying. I haven't used the MP3 playing function on this phone since reflashing recently.
but my sound issue has been around on all the EC07 flashes I've done

My sound for plugging in USB has been laggy since imnuts hacked kernel. But that has been the only buggy sound
Sent from my SCH-I400 using xda premium
I think I misunderstood what was meant by 'skipping'. My phone does something where it sounds almost like there is a short in the connection for a second. And before i switched to t1231's reclean, there were times where I'd have to reboot my phone to get my headphone jack to work at all.
Here is my question. And the point where i probably sound like an idiot. Could this have something to do with voodoo? I know the recovery kernel is no voodoo, but I wonder if there is some correlation. I really don't know enough about voodoo to call this anything more than an idea I'm throwing out to see if it sticks, but if anyone more knowledgeable than me wants to chime in on it...
okay its deffintly the grip sensor i just went back to imnuts stock ec03 rom and it does it when ever i touch the phone my question is, is there any way to completly disable it because i use my phone for music more than anything.
actually scratch that im an idiot lol you can turn of active grip sensor in the settings and now it dosnt do it near as bad.
I actually don't think it was the ROM that did it. I think it was the new hacked kernel imnuts put up. Before that kernel my phone never did this. And it skips even though my grip sensor is off
You know that kernal might be it none of this happened before but it shouldn't matter now after I went back to ec03
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA App
Even though I don't think all those who replied in this thread were describing or even experiencing the same sound issues, I have solved, it would seem, the problem I was having with some sounds sounding distorted, like when plugging my phone in to my computer.
I wiped the cache partition and dalvik cache trying to solve a different issue, and now my sounds are all clean and pure as they once were.
now its all sound videos will just freeze and stutter sometimes when i touch the sensor
okay so i was just curious i decided to go back to completly stock dl17 and unroot after everything got booted i tested the music and it dosnt freeze at all anymore only slightly skips when you turn the screen off but the grip sensor dosnt mess up at all. so tommorrow im going to reroot go back straight to ec07 and see what happens i know for a fact it didnt skip when i first tried ec03.

Google REFUSING to help with broken device

So, I'm at my wit's end. I've had multiple chats with highly belligerent Google staffers who, because they don't recognise an error, refuse to help. They also won't let me return my 6P and I'm pretty close to desperation.
Essentially, my 6P just won't play podcasts without the audio continually dropping out (it goes silent, but playback continues). To get audio back, I need to unplug / replug my headphones multiple times, pause / play multiple times / sometimes restart entirely. There's a subtle click whenever this happens. This occurs with podcasts downloaded via PocketCasts and DoggCatcher and books via Audible. It happens regardless of which player I use - even if I sideload the files into Google Play Music.
It doesn't seem to happen with music files but, come on, an mp3's an mp3. My suspicion is that it's happening with long files. Maybe I should try some opera.
Google essentially say that files like podcasts and sources like the BBC aren't supported. It's CRAZY for a flagship like this. They insist the phone is fine without taking a physical look at it. They flat-out refuse to let me exchange it.
So what the hell do I do? Podcasts are, by a large margin, the thing I spend most time using my phone for. Without that very basic functionality, the 6P is next to useless for me.
Do I have to take legal action?
Legal action? I bet your success rate would be close to 0% on that.
Factory reset or reflash the stock images.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
I guess it may come to that?! I'm just dumbfounded by their response, which amounts to "you're using it wrong". It's not remotely what I've come to expect from Google and the overall tone is simply hostile and callous. I'm really shocked by it, to tell you the truth.

I troubleshoot software and hardware for a living. You've got to look at it from their perspective:
*no known issues other than yours (my guess - have to check bug tracker
*inability to replicate
*isolated issue
*not HW related
*not SW related (see bulletpoint one)
It's not that they DON'T want to help you, it's just based on the information provided and lack of other users having the same problem, they have nothing to resolve your issue with. Now if other users start reporting the same thing? Software issue that will get flagged on a bug tracker and possibly added as a bug fix in a future update.

Oh, god, I completely understand. But surely, in the interim, they should offer to RMA the device rather than simply saying: "Meh, your problem"? I mean, they're famous for being great to deal with - why this sudden lack of concern?
Inability to replicate surely means getting the questionable device in hand and testing. It's not enough to say that other devices work fine so mine should work fine too.

Which app are you using to play podcasts?
Have you tried another? I use Pocketcasts every day and have no problems whatsoever.
EDIT: Have you also tried a different pair of headphones? Not all headphones work well with the 6P.
Put this thing on reddit and hope for a ****storm.
It sounds to me like what you're experiencing is a compatibility issue, not a phone issue. I don't see how/why they'd replace a handset in that situation.

PocketCasts primarily (which is why I'm sure it's a fault with my hardware - because people like your good self are fine!), but also DoggCatcher. I've also sideloaded the files into Play Music and the problem persists. It also happens with Audible. And, yep, I've tried several pairs of headphones. SIGH.

Bingo! I see this every year with Nexus. Not to say it doesn't happen with other phones, but Nexus seems to attract more AR, paranoid users than any other. I'm not surprised they're trying to minimize exchanges in some cases.
If you haven't done an FDR, I would suggest that you do, and restore nothing. Install Pocketcasts and see if the issue persists.
Or.... Tell them there is a slight bulge over the volume rocker and they will exchange it. It's a "known issue" I was told by Google this very thing. And was told I could exchange if I wanted.
I had a similar thing happen on my @voice reader app and was able to correct it by setting the "between paragraph" delay to 0 ms from the standard 300 ms. Something about the way Marshmallow handled that slight break in audio focus caused it drop from bluetooth and speaker playback. I don't know if your podcast apps have the ability to speed up playback, but it might be worth a shot.
I had the same issue with pocketcasts. The only fix was a reboot. I haven't tried to listen to them on 6.0.1 yet. But I've only had that issue twice. Reboot helped.

Yeah, it's pretty constant for me. I'm trying yet another pod catcher to see if that helps. I'll report back if it does. But I'm SURE it's nothing to do with the apps. Like I say, even if I sideload the files into Google Play Music, the problem persists.
Anyone know whether a bulge at the bottom is RMA-able even after the 14 days (I was one of the meh-okay-nothing's-perfect people)? I guess I could say it's developed recently??
I have a similar issue listening to Tune In radio whether live, or a recorded show. I have chalked it up to my headphones cause they're pretty Sh!tty and on their last leg. Audio keeps counting down but no sound. Unplug, replug, hit play and I am on my way again.
Are you sure it is not the headphones, have you tried with a bluetooth speaker or headset?
It will work. The bulge thing. I have screen shots of the conversation with Google telling me it's nothing to worry about and if it got worse it would be covered and I would get a new device. Can't post pics yet, my account won't let me.
Yep, definitely not the headphones. I've tried three pairs now. Thanks, though!

Audio cutting out more and more frequently since last update.

Anyone else getting their audio cut out? Before the latest update my phone was pretty flawless. Now certain apps the audio cuts out. Then cuts back in and sound likes it struggles to stay on then cuts back out. Now this just happened to a Facebook video I was watching. This never happened before. I'm not using head phones and I haven't tried using them this is happening to the phones speaker.
Is Sammy aware of this issue?

i've had this problem. I reset and it went away then came back after a software update. I would love to know what that update did and how to roll back
Well I'm back, and I got some bad news.
I did an hard reset, (went into recovery and deleted cache as well etc)
The 1st day it was fine. And now just a few hours ago, it started again. It's really bugging the he'll out of me.
This has to be software related. My phone was flawless before this last update.
As I type this my keyboard stopped making sounds.
Contacted samsung about the issue.

It's been happening with the phones speaker. Haven't replicated the issue with headphones, then again I rarely use them on the phone.
Right now I have full sound, but eventually it will cut out, come back cut out rinse and repeat.

Having the same issue on my AT&T Galaxy S7. It doesn't happen on Bluetooth, and I haven't noticed with headphones, but it cuts out all the time through the speakers. It'd be nice to find a solution to this issue for it is causing several issues such as the sound cutting out during my alarm going off for work. Ended up an hour late due to the issue. ?
Anyone find a true resolution. I've read many articles and still no luck. Factory wipe, partition wipe, safe mode, developer mode.. I've tried it all
I share your pain. I have the same problems too.

I'm having the same issue especially Snapchat the sound makes me feel like my speaker is going out which it's not
Same here. Bug in system
same here. I noticed it for awhile. Samsung needs to fix this bug!
it happens at least twice today. so annoying.. Anyone here having the same issue?
Aye, happening with me too. But it is not consistent, sometimes the notification sound will play in full, other times cut.
I also have the cut off sound when my sounds do play, but I currently have an issue when none of my sounds are playing at all. Then suddenly one app will play a sound, but the rest won't. But I had this on my S7 as well, so I'm not sure where the bug is, as it isn't specific to any app. I usually have to do a complete factory reset to reinstate them, which is a bit annoying.
This is pants, 8 months down the line and it's still happening. For me it's calendar notifications. Sometimes it'll only play one note of the sound, sometimes none, sometimes 2 or 3 notes. I've tried everything from changing tones to doing a factory reset, still no good. This is bad from Samsung, they've got such excellent hardware but their software implementation is poor, there's always something dragging it down.
Thought it was all just in my head… Turns out others are also having this issue. It doesn't happen 100% of the time, but it does happen.
I had problem with my S7 edge and now 6 months later with my Note 8. I did the factory reset and problem still exists. Someone had recommended me to install "Disable increasing ring" app, and that seems to fix the problem. You get 10 days trial then it's .99 cents to purchase. I will try to do the factory reset again and install very minimal app to see which one that causes the problem. Things is, I shouldn't have to purchase an app to fix the problem. Very frustrating. I don't know If it's only happen Samsung phone. If that's the case then I might have to switch to Pixel.
I just got an S9 now, running oreo, so we shall see if it still does it. I will report back soon.
Stupid Glitches
I'm having this problem now. I don't know if it's where I live (Juneau, Alaska) or my service provider or too much stuff stored on my phone. It's irritating. Especially when I end up missing half of my husband's work breaks because the sound doesn't go off. It happens mostly with FB messenger. I'm sick of it.

Do you have a smartwatch connected to it at all? Just wondering if that could be anything to do with it?
