[Q] What are the "Must Have Apps" for the Note 3 - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What apps do you use the most on your Note 3..
File Manager
Terminal Emulator
Backup
etc

Well I'll tell you from the ones I have not freezed and aren't vital for the phone (sorry Samsung, too much crap) and the ones I've installed:
Pre installed:
All Google play apps
SNote
Sketchbook
S health
Action memo
(I just love this pen man hahaha)
Installed:
(I usually use combos for a task)
Entertainment: Smart IR Remote
Productivity: Quick office + Drive
News: Feedly + Pocket
To Do's: Wunderlist + Evernote
Units: XE Currency + Convert It!
Photo: Procapture + Snapseed
Math: Myscript Calculator + MyCalc
CCCCOMBO BREAKER:
Root:
Seeder: Reduce lag
Greenify: Extend battery life
Pen window manager: Add more apps to pen window
AdBlock Plus: as if explanation was needed.
Xposed+Wanam: edit the framework.
WifiKill: remove people from the internet hahaha.
those are the essentials for the best productivity. Just my two cents

ES File Explorer. Stock file manager doesn't remember scroll position, which is far from amusing if you have 2648 files to review in one folder.
Diceplayer + VLC + MX Player. If one can't run it, the rest can.
Firefox+Adblock plus +quit. Ahhhhh, no ads!
Sketchbook (pre-installed). I bought it for my previous phone, which is now making my wallet a bit irritated.
Zooper Widget. Best. Widget. Ever.
Procapture+Snapseed. That stock camera is a nightmare once you get used to a DSLR. What do you mean, there is no manual mode?!!
Smart IR Remote. Because WatchON keeps running in the background, only works on a tv, is meant for US users, and the puns were getting a little detrimental to my continued existence. (Mate of mine is called Alan Watson. :silly: )
Moon+ reader. Best Ereader app, by far. (I don't do DRM, sod off Google Play Books.)
Perfect Viewer+pdf plugin. This screen is great for reading comics!
MapsWithMe Pro. No irritating location services demands, no overobsessive americans logging every step you take, no powerhungry background processes that keep running, and best of all: no roaming! Plus literally everything is on there, even individual trees and powerlines. Also, it has maps of Europe that are not 12 years old!
EWeather HD. Finally, one with a European weatherprovider! I got a little tired of New York telling me the weather in Rotterdam: "it will be a sunny something-fahrenheit today!" Except for the bit where it rains cats and dogs, and we don't use fahrenheit.
Quickpic. Obvious.
Officesuite Pro. Again, obvious.
Realcalc. Smart Tools. Unit Converter Plus. Swiftkey.
That should be it.

Sent from my SM-N9005

Do you have to be rooted for Greenify?
Also, some apps I love:
Sketchbook, although I am not a great artist.
Asphalt 8
Contacts (yep, I love the contacts on the Note 3)
Dropbox

How did you get Seeder to work? I got the "An application has been forced to stop for an unauthorized attempt to access system in your device" and this on a rooted Note 3. Greenify and any other rooted module or app I use works fine but I can't get Seeder to run without this error.

[Q] Please recommend apps - Milestone 2

First of all.. the moderators can move this to another section if this isn't the correct place to be posting this...
I have been waiting for the Milestone 2 section to pop up to ask this... but I guess that might take a little longer...
I'm using the stock ROM from Motorola Froyo 2.2.. My phone is rooted though... Not a big fan of BLUR for obvious reasons.. (Angdroid .. we are waiting for ur custom ROM eagerly to get rid of BLUR.. kudos to u bro to help us out)
So I want some recommendations on the apps that I should use for the list below. I'm using some apps but since the android world in full of awesome apps.. I just wanted to make sure that I'm using the best of the best..
I would really appreciate if someone can give a reason as to why I should NOT use a particular app..
Task Killer - _________ (using Avanced task killer)
Alarm & Timer - ________ (using stock) (hopefully nothing fancy is necessary here)
File Manager - _________(ASTRO)
Calendar - ___________ (using stock)
Dictionary - __________ (required. Preferably offline)
Camera - ___________ (using stock)
Camcorder - __________ (using stock)
Contacts - __________ (using stock)
Dialler - ___________ (using stock)
Office app - _________ (got Quickoffice as stock)
Browser - ___________ (Dolphin HD and Opera Mini)
Social Networking - _________ (I only use Facebook and I have got the official App)
Picture Gallery - ________ (Got QuickPic.. looking for something a little more fancy here)
Music Player - ___________ (got stock n WinAmp)
Text Messaging - __________ (Stock)
Exchange - ____________ (heard a lot about Exchange by Touchdown)
Launcher - ______________ (using Launcher Pro)
Other than that I have Google Goggles, Google Sky Maps, Google Maps, SetCPU, XDA app n Youtube..
One more thing, I would really appreciate if someone can suggest apps (especially launcher) which can give me better battery life..
Would also appreciate any interesting app that I'm missing..
Thanks in advance for your suggestions..
You don't need a task killer. FroYo is designed to handle running apps optimally and a task killer just gets in the way of doing that.
okay... thanks for tht....
Any other suggestions??
Well I keep advanced task killer froyo in case an app starts acting up and I need to kill it. I never kill everything though.
A great music player is miui music. Very good ui, downloads lyrics and album artwork free.
Miren web browser from the miui rom is also great.
Widgetlocker is nice. Widgets on your lockscreen and its only $1.
Launcherpro is a great home replacement to get ride of the blur launcher. Its super smooth and snappy. Paid version has some nice widgets.
Hope you find this helpful.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
Thanks.. I'll try out miui music and miren browser.. Not to keen on keeping widgets on lock screen, so would keep away from Widgetlocker..
Have tried both Launcher Pro and ADWlauncher... Launcher Pro is super snappy... but ADWlauncher is catching up fast... Plus it has got loads of themes.. I cant decide between the two at the moment.. I guess battery consideration will dictate terms there....
More suggestions are welcome...
Root Explorer is a good file manager because it gives you access to your /system folder so you can eliminate those annoying camera shutter sounds. It costs $10.

Android mate is a free alternative to root explorer. It gives you root access to your /system folder. It might not have as many features as root explorer, but that's the price you pay for not paying lol

Ad free to stop ads (Duh).
Adobe Reader (Just in case).
Angry Birds (For a little fun)
Default Browser
CNET news
Compass
Droid Overclock
Droid Light
Google Earth
Facebook
Fancy Widget (HTC Clock type widget)
Fissiom Rom Manager
Google Goggles (Take pictures of things and automagically googles them)
Iheartradio
NFL mobile
XDA app of course
Just a few apps I use on my phone.
Thanks Mike for the list..
I do have Ad Free, Angry Birds, Facebook, Google Goggles n XDA apps..
Will give compass a try (donno how useful it is for me though).. CNET news and Google earth also seem to be good options...
About Droid overclock.. I did try Milestone overclock n was able to overclock my phone to 1300 MHz.. but my battery doesnt seem to last long (even without overclocking it hardly lasts a day).. Do u guys have a similar issue without battery?? If yes, can you suggest some ways to conserve it??
@orkillakilla: I have ASTRO.. Is Android mate a better option??

Im guessing since you have the Milestone 2 you prolly don't have it ROMed which I dont think you can at this point and time. There in lies your problem, the MotoBlur absolutely HATES batterys. Before I ROMed my phone I could barely last a day with mild useage, I can now last at least a day and a half. With overclocked =P.
To conserve use WiFi whenever possible. Put the screen brightness as low as you can tolerate it. If you don't mind disconnect your facebook account from your phone (That is constantly pulling data which is a main cause of battery drain).
Also, If you just got the phone I'm sure you are using it a ton which may drop off as time goes on (Once you get used to having this amazing mini computer in your pocket lol) which will drop the battery usage that display uses.
I also use "Data counter widget" because the native data counter bonkers :-(
There are Engadget, xda and Facebook apps in the store.
For internet tethering I use PdaNet - great app!
PowerAMP is my favorite music player. Haven't played much with it though.
QuickDic as dictionary.
QuickPic is okay, I use native Gallery.
Shakespeare App is great. All his books for free!
Widgetsoid to create my own widgets. Like it alot.
As for games I'm currently looking for a strong mills game. I have downloaded all mills game from the store but they all suck. Way too easy. The same for "Stratego" clone Legions...nice, but way too easy...
iPhone has a better choice for apps...really sucks

That is surely true..
But I dont think we Milestone 2 users are gonna see a custom ROM anytime soon... though m keeping my fingers crossed...
@oTToToTenTanz: Data counter is a good suggestion.. m nt too keen on games (except for angry birds) as I use my PSP for that...

give me your top paid apps

i dont use credit cards so up till now iv been using free apps only, i have a prepaid and i want to pick up some paid apps.
there is a top app thread but its not necessarily for paid apps

Girl-proof Nexus 7 - lock down apps

Hey. I think my question is mostly around locking down apps somehow.
I have an N7 and i want to be able to give it to girls when they come over to play games, browse the web, Facebook etc.. Can anyone recommend the best way to hide all my stuff? I wanna load it with tonnes of games (all the stuff i bought but never played) but still have an app or two on there for me. Evernote, gmail etc.
I have chameleon and nova launchers, figured in nova i can hide apps but they can just be shown again via the options menu.. There's no password option.
Im running stock jb, rooted.
My only other thought is to manually backup>verify>uninstall via titanium apps like Gmail, then manually restore when i want them??
I searched for app lockers but most seem to be poorly maintained / aren't compatible with jb or are easily bypassed by the recent menu..
Does anyone have any suggestions for a device i can safely share with other people?

This is why I like Go Launcher:
It has a Running Apps section in the App Tray
You can hide apps
You can lock the desktop (nice for kids so they don't screw up your mojo)
While I don't personally use Go Launcher, it is pretty high in features and functionality. It has folder support in both the App drawer and desktop, themeable, and attractive. Sure you CAN unlock apps through options, but they'd probably never find it.
Somewhere I saw a profile manager where you could setup different users with different launchers, wallpapers, and apps. Might be worth checking out.
Go launcher also collects more data than it needs.
Remember CIQ? Yeah like that...

Yeah profile management would be perfect, like a login on a PC.. there was some mention of google getting a patent for this based on face recog but.. I might do a search to see if there is secure profile management somewhere..

Thanks for the tip. I'm wary of those premium but free apps sharing info >_< plus having paid for nova (albeit on the 25c sale) and chameleon, i'd rather find an option that uses those..

CM10 (and other ROMs I am sure) also have the profile options. It sounds exactly like what you're looking for.

You can try app protector apps. You can lock it down with a pin
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
I would try a Profile Manager, one for kids/missus, one for you.
Then you can easily switch between them as and when you need.
ZDBox has an app locker which seems to do the job for me.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...xLDEsImNvbS56ZHdvcmtzLmFuZHJvaWQudG9vbGJveCJd
Yet to try those apps but so far the best solution I've found is to "freeze" the apps in Titanium Backup
It moves the links from the launcher.. every launcher, as if they arent there at all.
There seems to be a batch defrost/unfreeze option, but I'm not sure if theres an easy way to re-freeze a set of apps..
Not sure if titanium backup has a PIN / password option though.. but it would be complicated for a non-tech user to figure out how to unfreeze apps in Titanium Backup..
You could try SwitchMe. It basically reboots the tablet when you switch users. Each user can have their own apps, etc.
App lock could be worth a look.
Freezing in titanium is my solution and works great for that purpose unless she's an android nerd and you pissed her off enough for her to install titanium and thaw out your frozen apps.

Titanium Backup (would be lost without it, its my swiss army knife of tools)
Multi Mount SD-Card (simple tap toggles USB Media mode, for better compatibility, and functionality when connecting to PC)
Thumb Keyboard (even tho im currently using Swype, you can't beat the massive customization of a keyboard you can taylor yourself as you go along, even to the point where 'ahdjfhafha' should autocorrect to 'nice to meet you, too'. and always having arrows on screen makes a world of difference)
SMS Popup (even tho I don't use its popup sms feature, I use it as an extremely lightweight sms notifier, and disable stock texting's; as it forces the screen to wakeup even in my pocket -__-, which we all know leads to battery drains/wakelocks/ not to mention pocket dialing/app opening/and all sorts of other unwanted chaos..)

flash player works in a flash supported browser, ie: FireFox, Lightning Browser, Boat Browser
well since im making a second post here, might as well list 5 more =]
Flashlight (tried many flashlight apps, this one uses max brightness, loads the fastest, can be set to auto on on launch which is perfect for lockscreen apps, and works with screen off)
QuickPic (as neat as the stock gallery's is, it's important to have reliable picture viewer that does it all)
PowerAmp (unlike QuickPic I know there's lots of 3rd party music players that support everything. I choose PowerAmp because opened media files still play when navigated away from, option to delete while listening to, Enqueued options, better file type support than stock, and can LISTEN to a movie/video with screen off/ navigation away. oh yeah and best external hardware control support (car hw toggles, BT controls, wireless keyboard media buttons, etc)

As far as the text-to-speech deletion goes, just uninstall whichever ones you don't anticipate needing.
Settings>Language and Input>text-to-speech options>Listen to an example. Really it's personal preference, and uninstalling unused tts voice data only serves to free up internal storage. For example, the "high quality" female English US voice for Google TTS is 244MB, The Samsung high quality voice data is around 90MB per language/gender.

Samsung has launched s5 devices with less permissions do to whatever you want! So maybe you have to root your device (which is not possible right now bcoz it will cut your warranty out) So another solution for it is try to search for an app on play store which disables system applications! Without root
I've turned off the following:
Accessories
Audible
Blurb Checkout
Caller Name ID
Family Base Companion
Flipboard
Google Play Books
Google Play Newsstand
IMDb
Isis Mobile Wallet
My InfoZone
My Magazine
NFL Mobile
Samsung Link Platform
Slacker
Smart Remote

This is my complete list... everything still works (except the Samsung bloat crap like S-voice and the verizon garbage pre-loaded). I did turn off some Google apps that were needless, and the Samsung fitness stuff (e.g. ANT+ connection, fitness, etc.), in addition to other things (S-pen, fonts, etc.)

I believe samsung billing is for app purchases through their proprietary app store
Samsung Link is a protocol for connecting only with samsung TV's/laptops - has functionality for screen-mirroring, DLNA only with samsung branded devices.
Samsung Galaxy... I'm not entirely sure what it does to be honest. I've tested fairly extensively if any functionality / apps / services are broken as a result, and everything still seems to work fine. I have a suspicion that this is related to a tutorial/demo function.

Ah ok, thanks! I see that you have the "Downloads" app turned off. What does that app do? I know it's part of media, which is giving me a lot of wakelocks. The three things that are part of "Media", can you uninstall all three, and what does each one do?

This is with 2 hour 11 min screen on time. So Not Bad At All. (Not sure why, but keyboard randomly does that) but it is waking up a lot.

Downloads app is just an app that shows a history/list of everything you've recently downloaded (e.g. in the downloads folder). I prefer to use ESFileExplorer as it's more versatile as a file manager, and I don't care for an app that tracks file downloads/history.
In previous android versions, I believe the Media app was part of what cached/listed files such as images (thumbnails), music files, docs, etc. I vaguely recall disabling it in the past to find that all my MP3's and photos no longer appeared in the gallery/google music app. I would not disable it if my memory serves me correctly.
Yeah, your battery usage looks about in-par with mine. I came from a GNex and was used to seeing display always overtaking androidOS/systemUI (man, that phone had atrocious battery life and screen-on time)... the GS5 has such a great power-sipping display that I came to the same surprise as you to find it ranks on-par/sometimes below OS usage in a normal day. The battery life on this phone rocks.
EDIT: Media usage will sometimes spike if you've recently added a bunch of new files (photos, mp3's, etc.) to your device, as it's scanning/caching/indexing lists to the files. I'd give it a day or two if that's the case, and you'll see it won't consume much of anything once things are static on your phone.

Oh OK. I see. So perfectly safe to disable downloads. What about the media app itself? Do you have it disabled? That screen shot with the high media usage, I'm not sure we have it was so high. It's first time it has been like that and I haven't added any more music. Another question.
Do You Know What The Chrome sandbox is? And does your keyboard ever do that thing with the capital letters?

I don't have the media app disabled and wouldn't recommend it. I also wouldn't disable chrome sandbox ( though I'm not sure of its function, its installed alongside the app so it may be a plugin for other apps).
Not sure what keyboard caps problem you're referring to. I use only the android keyboard (not Samsung nor Swype).
