Tablet Mode on 4.2.1? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I want Tablet Mode on my Stock Nexus 7, but the Tablet-Mode-Patch is for the oldest Stock ROM. Does it still work with 4.2.1? Cuz I dont like DPI Change...
Its rooted

It seems that the patch still work on 4.2.1 according to the folloing post. (sorry, I'm still on custom rom based on 4.1.2.)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35408239

I just used it,worked perfectly for me on stock 4.2.1 rooted/unlocked via twrp.

kodiak, how did u deodex it?

You don't need to deodex. Grab the 4.2.1-TabletUI.zip from the following link (Post 912) and apply in recovery. Laucher is messed up but Nova Launcher free works great.

you could also install paranoid android, where you can choose which layout (phone, phablet, tablet...) you wish to use, you can even set layouts for individual apps or app groups (e.g. Launcher + google mail in tablet mode, other apps stay phablet)

I am currently running paranoid androids latet rom, and the main thing I'm struggling with is that the 3 buttons (back, home, and the 3rd button that brings up recent apps) are centered, when I want them on the let side. Does the patch fix that?
Also, is there a way to remove the lock screen tiles? I think I saw other threads saying that this change was related to the lawsuit but didn't find anything that allows you to take those off. At the very least I'd want to change the font if I have to keep it.
Any guidance would be appreciated.

Yes the tablet patch takes the 2 seperate nav bar and task bar and puts them to the bottom like they should be imho.
I dont even run the lock screen so I cant answer that question.

In Paranoid settings, change the UI to Tablet UI (mid) and you'll have the navigation bar buttons to the left hand side like you want.
Also, the way to get rid of the lockscreen tiles is to install Lockscreen Policy.

A few android question

Hi,
I've been with WinMo since 2001 until about a week ago when I switched to andriod. I have many questions and was unsure where to turn to. I will try here. If there is a better place, please let me know.
I have a Desire Z that I got with ATT 3G bands. I have successfully rooted the device, overclocked it, and installed Cyanogen 6.
1) When I hit the power button, I still have to swipe my finger across the screen to unlock. How do I make it so I don't have to do this?
2) I had some difficulty upgrading to Cyanogen 6 and was unable to get 7 to work. IfI want to mess around further with roms, is there some way I can backup EVERYTHING so if I screw up, I can make my phone exactly the way I have it now without a whole lot of work re-installing stuff, etc.?
3) The link to the phone, app, and browser are all stuck on the bottom of the phone. Can I get rid of this?
4) When laying apps out on the home screen, there seems to be some kind of grid that they are locked into that makes it hard to move them exactly where I want them. It will let me lay them so they overlap each other, but not very close to each other. Is there some way to overcome this?
5) I can't seem to arrange apps close to the top of the screen because the garbage can overlay slides down and when I move the app near the top it thinks I am trying to throw it away.
6) Is there an app that will show both the current weather and an icon for the weather conditions in the status bar?
Wow, a lot of questions...
1, Go to Settings->CyanogenMod Settings->Input Settings and select Trackball wake/Trackball Unlock or Menu Unlock and after that you will be able to select Disable Unlock Slider
2, Try Titanium Backup (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup)
3, As far as I know CM6 uses ADW.Launcher as default launcher. You can change it to LauncherPro (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.fede.launcher) which is fully customisable
4, There is a grid which can't be changed
5, LauncherPro has the trash icon at the bottom
6, Sorry, I didn't find any

Hello Everyone.
I went and found some of these answers on my own. I also was able to upgrade to CM7.
1) I found an app for it but will try PsHeger's solution.
2) I found that the bootloader/Rom manager do a good job of this, too.
3) I was able to remove it in the app launcher rather than using pro.
4) This absolutely pisses me off. I have a Winmo 6.5 phone that lets me have a nice, organized home screen. I can't believe there isn't a better solution to this. Good lord.
6) Go Weather App does this.
if you set your grid settings to 10x10 rows and columns in launcher pro, you can put the icons and widgets pretty much anywhere.

I changed my LCD density on mine too after adding buttons (running CM10), and the buttons go back to stock. Is there any way to customize the combined bar or tablet bar or combination bar or WHATEVER the heck it's called? I've been scouring the interwebs for this info and can't find it anywhere.

Aokp supports tablet mode without changing dpi. When you do this you are able to customize the navbar to your hearts content.
Btw dpi changes are dirty little hacks that tend to break compatability with several aokp features like this and make some apps disappear from the play store.

[FEEDBACK] What do you want in a ROM?

Hey Guys/Gals!,
Just wanted to make this quick thread and ask everyone what would YOU like in a ROM? I've been flashing all types of ROMs for a multitude of devices and have never made one before. That has changed, I'll be making and releasing my first ROM for this device.
It'll be built from source and will have any additional/available goodies I can bake in too So please let me know your thoughts and/or requests
Requests so far:
- Undervolting
- Button changing toolkit (Shapes and positions of the nav buttons so that everyone can choose their favorite )
- Ability to have the buttons and notification bar at the bottom, to save space
- A permanent menu button
- Combination of SuperNexus' battery life, ParanoidAndroid's hybrid modes, DPI central control, status bar and navigation color control, AOKP like ROM manager and tweaks
- SetCPU like control with profiles, system app mover built in, optional choice to click which apps to pre install
- GPS lock tweaks for faster GPS connection, undervolting (which was already said), custom vibrations, tablet style notification bar on bottom of the screen, center clock, custom led indicators for different apps, any other speed tweaks you can bake in!
- Expand desktop feature like on paranoidandroid!
- Built in boot loader changer.
- Paranoid Android, tablet mode + keys. Boss.

How so? Like for the nav buttons on the bottom?
Ability to have the buttons and notification bar at the bottom, to save space.
And a permanent menu button.
More specifically, being able to launch different shortcuts from the navigation buttons.
Possibly even having the ability to toggle the navigation buttons either by long pressing the back button or whatever, while returning with a swipe up from the button type thing.
Just some ideas that I've used on my TF201 running Eos.

2 Features that I think I had in MIUI-XJ on the desire:
1. The ability to lock apps with a password / swipe code.
This was great for me as I could just swipe to unlock my phone, then lock down email and social networking apps. I wasn't concerned about the dialer or contacts.
2. In the same vein, MIUI also had private mode. Hit the button and your call history is hidden as well as all your SMS messages. Microsoft WP8 has the child mode. Something like that would be nice for those times when you hand your phone to someone else.

Hide the navigation bar on stock-rooted 4.2.2

Hi everybody,
I was wondering if exist any method or mod to hide the navigation bar on the stock-rooted 4.2.2 ROM? I tried with fullscreen+piecontrol pro, but there is a conflict between fullscreen and piecontrol pro, the last one does not show the notifications...
I know the cyanogenmod and the paranoid roms can do that, but i am trying to preserve the original stock rom...

will you listen if someone tells you this is crazy?
you want to preserve the polish of your stock rom, ...by installing a hack? thats like stomping on it. not to mention that its limited.
not many people know this, and this may come as a surprise to you, but nexus roms base on AOSP. in other words, that is stock android you're dealing with. theres no way to do it cleaner, you take android sourcecode, supplied by google, you add google supplied vendor files, and you extend it in a clean way. you end up with a coherent, sane system. you will not loose the polish that you know from stock. its not a clunky do it yourself makeshift solution, it feels and behaves as if its part of the whole.
watch a couple of these vids: http://www.youtube.com/user/molesarecoming/videos?flow=grid&view=0
neither lmt nor any root hack can do it. you really wanna go that way still?

i understand you. what im saying is, instead you take a nicely designed, coherent OS, and you smash it against the wall and stomp on it. by installing dirty hacks that is. theres nothing stock anymore after that treatment, you're dealing with root apps here running all the time, sucking your battery dry, ramping up your cpu. with smali hacks that erode your framework and fragment your android anyway, so its not updatable by OTA. you're going for the dirtiest solution possible thinking you'll stay clean. it just makes no sense.

I already know the solution, but the concern is that the screen flashes when moving in such an application message, contact, etc ... it's a shame because this is the only application that does exactly what is being asked, just hide the navigation bar while keeping the tray.
Simple app to hide nav bar and replace it with transparent buttons on the corners
This app called "full!screen" is a quick and easy way to get rid of the nav bar. It (optionally) replaces the buttons with transparent buttons on the lower right and left corners. Very customizable and stable, but it needs root.

I am using this code with GMT gesture. Amazing and I love it. I am on rooted stock.

You can now hide soft keys (and keep notification bar) without modifications and reboots. Just try my new app:
GMD Hide Soft Keys
It also adds Quick NavBar - soft keys that can be openede with simple swipe from bottom and they autohide when not needed.

[Q] 4.4 Update nothing like Nexus 5

It's not even close to being similar.
What's going on?
edit: What's missing:
Translucent menu bar
Translucent dock
The inability to add/remove home pages
Translucent app drawer - App drawer no different. Still shows widgets
Messaging app is still there - Good point though
To sum up, it looks like Jelly Bean..

From memory, the same happened with 4.2/4.3 on the Galaxy Nexus vs Nexus 4. They were similar, but there were differences between them. One that springs to mind was the Nexus4 shipped with "Chrome" whereas the Galaxy Nexus had "Browser". There was other bits and bobs that were different between them too, and i remember thinking it was pretty strange, given they were supposed to be both running "vanilla" android.
Search or read existing threads this has been discussed countless of times. Install Nexus 5 port or buy a Nexus 5.

1. the n4 doesnt get the translucent bar.
2. same with the clock
3. install the google experience launcher, its not default
4. see#3
5. open google hangouts and except hangouts as your messaging app(same on n5).
so it turns out only the translucent bar and clock are different. does that make the n5 and n4 4.4 roms not even close to being similar, no.
