does anyone not have light bleed? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I read a lot of light bleed issues.
Are there any without light bleed?
Is there a poll on this. I am curious about the ratio.
I am getting my nexus 10 today and will not be able to use it till the 25th.
I hope I wont be RMAing it on the 26th...
Thanks joe

I have purchased 3 N10s so far for myself, family member and a friend. All were purchased with 1 week or so gap and all 3 have backlight bleed to varying degree. Unless you have really bad bleed which is discoloured like too yellow, stick with what you have as there is every chance you might get worse piece.
While backlight bleed does not bother you most of the times, yellow one is whole different story.

Agree. My first one was the best, it was a relatively small bleed and it was white. I should have kept it. My 2 other replacements were yellow and that sucks. I am hoping my next replacement will be either no bleed or very small white bleed.

I haven't done a full-on light bleed test in a dark room yet, but I have not noticed any on my N10. So, if I have any on my screen, it's very mild.
I just received my N10 yesterday, so it's possible they've improved more recent ones...

I ordered mine the day it was released and I don't notice any at all either. I have not run a full test on it because if I don't see it (even when trying to find it) under normal usage conditions I do not really care if a test says I have it or not. Screen looks perfect to me so I am not really looking for reasons to not like it.

Would be good if you post on this thread to specify what is your BRIGHTNESS setting (full, auto, %, etc)

I have no light bleed on mine bought day of release.

The same. Fantastic tablet and although some people do seem to genuinely have a defective screen, some people are totally nitpicking and blowing the whole thing out of proportion. If your screen is totally black you're not actually using your tablet for anything so these tests people are running are pretty unrealistic.

I'm sure all LCD displays have light bleed.

Christmas present then I guess? Mine is too but I convinced the wife to allow me to check it was fault-free and set it up with all my apps and settings so it's ready to go on Christmas day!
Whilst she was at work and it was my day off, I had a good 8 hours of fun testing

Completely agree with your comment. Some might have true issues. I can see that mine has a slight bleed on the right side but there will never be a time where I sit in a completely dark room and stare at a black screen. Even at full brightness the slight bleed does not affect the look of my tablet in any way. It's an all around beautiful device!

None i've noticed in normal use but also havent gone searching for it. If the only way you can see the light bleed is when the screen is completely black then who cares. If the screen is on and completely black all the time then you have others problems besides light bleed.

My n10 has very little to no light bleed

None here. Got mine on Monday, expecting to have at least one issue...but not one so far.

very slight bleed for mine, not noticeable until i turn up the brightness all the way up and really look for it with a black screen

Mine is perfectly fine. No issue.

Mine looks perfect. Of course I'm not looking specifically to see if I do. It amazes me how many people on the forums are going out of their way to look for issues with their tablet.
If it looks good while I'm using it and I have no issues I'm OK with that!!

Exactly. On any device, if you're looking for problems you'll inevitably find some but in the real world under usage you'll notice none whatsoever

I did a bit more experimenting today. If I bring up a full-screen black image in a dark room with screen brightness at 100%, I can see some minimal light bleed in the lower two corners. My guess is, as others have said, that this is just going to be a given with these types of screens. I also noticed:
As soon as I set my screen brightness to auto, while still in a dark room with a full-screen black image, the light bleed was totally unnoticeable.
As soon as I turned on the lights in the room, with screen brightness still at 100% and a full-screen black image, the light bleed was totally unnoticeable.
So, for me at least, light bleed is only noticeable if I intentionally make it happen. Having the screen set to max brightness while in a totally dark room and a mostly black picture on screen is a pretty unlikely scenario in the real world. In normal usage I've never notice the light bleed, and I doubt I ever will.

I've been using my N10 since it was first released and the screen is perfect. Do you need unnatural or unusual conditions to detect light bleed?

Are any of you experiencing light bleed like the ASUS Transformers are experiencing?

I did with a dead pixel... I called Samsung and they will repair it.

yes.... check out the other threads.. people are reporting them with lots of tablets. The black bleeds yellow.
I just sent back my Transformer, and preordered this tab. The sleep issues and the light bleed are no worth getting that device. I tried to talk to tech support and they told me to take out the battery. that I could turn it over and pop it out like a laptop battery. Then they told me basically that if I didn't charge it for 8 hours it wouldn't work. ASUS Tech support was a nightmare. Samsung was a little slow with updates to my captivate... But I still love em. If this has a little bleed I wouldn't be too worried with it. It's the nature of backlite LED screens. It even happens on high end monitors and TVs. Until they come out with something else... It's going to be an issue. you just have to keep sending it back until you get one that doesn't bother you... that or turn down the brightness. In order to get it to do it you really need to crank up the brightness and walk into a dark room. IMO that's not to practical for normal use.
Which thread?

Light bleed usually only visible in the dark with dark screen backgrounds. I saw a review today on YouTube from mobile tech review and when they show some movie clips you can faintly see bleed lower right and right side.
this is what I was asking about

I haven't seen that yet. Where the colors are messed up like that.
Luckily no dead pixels and no light bleed.

Yes you can...search some of the other threads for the io support link.
Bought a retail version at the Union Sq Best Buy here in NYC, one spot on the screen (less than a square inch) would show "liquid" under the screen when depressed (I noticed it when I was wiping my fingerprints from the screen). Exchanged it hoping to get a grey model, but got the white one again.
Well that one had a slight light bleed on the button left corner and was only noticeable when the honeycomb controls disappear.
Today I exchanged it for another one, and it looks like a keeper.
No light bleed or dead pixels, at least none that I can see. Hardwarewise my tab seems perfect.
Model GT-P7510
Mines the new 32g model and I don't notice hardy any bleed at all on the screen... even after carefully examining the edges and trying to view at angle to see under the bezel I don't see anything I would call a bleed issue. Actually also having an Ipad I love screen on the new 10.1
I have both and I have absolutely no bleed and dead pixels on the GT.

same here, no bleed and no dead pixels. I can actually us this as an snooker reader now. the TV and load don't get dark enough. I read with red text on black. even at fu- brightness there is no bleed.
I have light bleed in the bottom right corner. I noticed it right off the bat. I'm exchanging it tomorrow. Let's hope the next one doesn't have the issue!
Yeah, thought mine was perfect, then noticed in the top right corner there is a spot about 1“ square. Didn't notice it until I booted up in a room with dim lighting. I might go exchange it out.

[Q] So those who have one, what are your first impressions?

Surprised that hardly anyone who has got one is letting on how they feel about it and what first impressions are, unless you are all treading carefully so as not to incite rage and indignation at the (ahem) less than smooth ordering process that has left the rest of us wondering whether tablets will be a thing of the past by the time ours arrive.
So far the only review/feedback I've seen is the poor guy who got a developer ROM and had to return it.

Did you have a Nexus 7 before the 10? Are the colors washed out as badly on the Nexus 10 as the Nexus 7? I was fairly disappointed with the Nexus 7, but am hopeful for the Nexus 10 resolving the color saturation problems.
How is the screen compared to the Ipad retina? Is it comparable? The backlight bleed is noticeable in any condition?

Got mine today morning ( France ), it was really a fast delivery ( got expedition mail yesterday )
After unboxing I've got 45 min to play with it ( then work... and I'll be back home in few hours tonight ^^ ), first impressions, overall quality of materials are impressive, the "plastic" on the back is really made for the skin of your hand, and doesn't feel like plastic, the upper part of the back is also very nice to see and touch.
I've noticed the upper part was starting to become warm after 30 min of use, not too much, just enough to enjoy having it in your hand in winter
The screen...gorgeous...that's all. I've seen lots of tablet screen recently, the N10 screen is perfect, didn't notice any bleeding for the moment.
The reactivity is also near perfect ( "Near" because I experienced some little little little slowdown sometimes, especially with firefox, I've also got app crash with it )
The negative point would be the destktop of jelly 4.2, I've found that a lot of borders space on the desk is not usable for widgets or shortcuts.
This is the best toy I've ever purchased
I'm looking forward for tonight to install more apps and start my test of PC control throught the tablet.

Do you mean the Nexus 10 your about to receive, or have you already got one with backlight bleed?
It makes me laugh hearing you guys talk about light bleed...
You guys are aware that every fking display has some? I had two iPad 2 and both had light bleed, my iPad 3 with retina had light bleed too and two of my friends have the Transforme Prime TFT300 and BOTH have light bleed.
Its minor but in a dark room with dark images and britghness set at max, they all show but then again who puts their brithness at the max in a bright room string at the corners of the screen?!

Fair point. It's only an issue if it's distracting during normal brightness & usage.

I agree with you. If consumers were THAT worried about light bleed, you would think they would wait to use one before they ordered it...
Hi,
does anyone else has a chirping sound? Especially when the display brightness is low.

General consensus on light bleed?

I know I have it a little on mine. Taking a picture of it makes it look worse than it actually is.
Are we all experiencing light bleed, or did some who received their units get a bleed free device?

Very minimal but I don't notice it whatsoever unless I'm specifically looking for it on an all black screen. Some people may have it worse than myself, but I believe a lot of people are exaggerating and/or OCD about the quality of screen light bleed. For me, it doesn't change anything other than it is -the- best screen I have ever used on a tablet.
I don't see any on mine

Maybe I'm lucky, but after thorough analysis I can safely say that my screen doesn't have any light bleed.
My only complaint with the display is the color saturation: I like to use the dimmest screen setting to save battery and my eyesight when using in dimly lit rooms (like right now), but I feel like the colors get washed out when it's at the lowest level. This is fixed when I raise the brightness up to about 5-10%. Perhaps this problem is true for all screens, but compared to my one x, it's more noticeable.
I've got some pretty bad light bleed in the bottom right corner (and a little on the sides as well). It's only really noticeable at high brightness on dark colors (like the black bar in the right corner LOL). I don't find it distracting unless I'm trying to watch a video that has a black letterbox.

[Q] how much light bleed is too much?

I have some light bleed in both of the bottom corners. They are clearly visible on 100% brightness in a completely dark room while displaying a black image, however when the brightness is set to 0% I can only just make out where the bleed occurs. It's almost a yellowish hue and spurts off the edge of the display a few millimeters. Now with auto-brightness on and just using my device it doesn't really jump out to and when showing it to others they couldn't even spot it when I told them to look for it. I just wondered if others were having this issue and if it was worth it for me to try to RMA another one. Funny thing is I just turned on my old 7 inch galaxy tab 2 and it has some bleed, but its not nearly as noticeable. As someone was saying I just wonder if a larger percentage of these have light bleed then those that don't.

IMO, if you have to sit in a pitch black room and crank the brightness up to 100%, then I would definitely keep it."Too much" is hard to define; many ppl here will RMA until they find a "perfect" unit.
I've heard ppl say that not all devices have bleeding, but in a world of mass produced products, screen bleed is just a side effect of consumer demand.
My family uses both Apple and Google/Android products. This includes 1st gen iPad & 1st gen iPad 2, and 3 android tablets made by HP, Asus, and now, Google. They ALL have screen bleeding. (HP being the worst of the five)

True, and like you said a lot of them may have it. What I don't want to do is order another and have it be worse. I just wondered if it was common and if those that can make it out in everyday use are going to return it. With that said mine can't be too bad as it isn't visible on any other color than black.

I would keep it sounds like minor light bleeding for you. It's normal to have some light bleed anyways. I've had it on all my devices (IconiaA500, Galaxy tab 10.1, Prime, Infinity, Note 10.1). If its visible for me even during the day then it would bother me and I would replace it.

It is visible during the day with auto brightness on, but it's only because of the black bar along the bottom. It is only just visible in lowish light with auto brightness on, so I don't know if I should send it back. The only thing I don't want to do is send it back and get one that has it worse.

[Q] Do you have Light bleed on the bottom of your Screen?

Do you have the well described light bleed on the bottom of your screen (7 brighter spots) at low brightness?
Whether you do or do not I am curious to know what your serial number date is.
I.e. are the 1st 3 digits 311 or 312.....
Someone suggested this was fixed on newer batches of these tablets and am curious if the newer serial numbers are showing the same issue.

Yes but only with a white background at that edge and when the tablet is at less than 20% brightness. If it is a darker background or the tablet is above 20% brightness I have no bleed that I can see. In fact, I never noticed it in regular use until I looked for it in order to reply to your thread. So obviously it does not bother me. SN 311.

Thanks. My purpose is not to get people bothered. I am more thing to establish 2 things. First that unlike light bleed which is random this its a near universallyrics described flaw out limitation of this device and going and returning it for am exchange is likely fruitless. Keep it if you like it or move on. I have chosen to keep mine.
Secondly to seeif there is a pattern to those that claim not you'll have this issue. One person in another post started his first twist had it but the replacement with a newer serial number did not.

Part of the reason I never noticed it is that I have my on-screen buttons as black so any bleed would never be visible for me in portrait mode. Also, the only time I ever have my brightness that low is at night when reading my kindle app in bed and I use the white text on black background for that so bleed would also never show up in that situation.

So what this means, is that the lack of the light bleed at the bottom of the screen that so many of us have is not necessarily related to do the month of manufacture. Somebody had suggested that models with serial 312 and higher were made sense that have not exhibited the same problem.
One thing I have noticed, is that I can lower the brightness on this tablet to a much lower level than any other smartphone or tablet. It is possible that is why we see those 7 lights at the bottom. It probably has to do with the fact that the overall screen brightness is so low that they become visible. Ordinarily on a different tablet it probably doesn't reach brightness level that low where more artifacts in the screen becomes viewable

This is a great thread and to tell you the truth if you havent began this one i would very soon began one similar. Here is my observations:
My first one was with 7 bright lights on the bottom vissible on white screen(do you tests with an apk thats free from Google playstore called "Backlight bleed apk", its free) from a 35% brightness and lower. It was annoying and second, much more important, for the money i gave to LG i want the product to be of high quality and tested by their technicians very thoughtfully before launching it. So i return it as a DOA. The second one had no 7 bright spots on the bottom but it had a yellow line on the top(under the Lg sign) that was very obvious with a white background (from 60% brightness and up). This one went also back as a DOA. The third one has again 7 bright spots on the bottom but its noticeable with 20% and below. All 3 devices are 311. Its quite a shame that this device with such good specs has such bad screen problems. I thing LG had a wonderfull idea with this tab but hurried to get it to the market.
Does someone with 312 have simmilar problems?

Does anyone here with the lightbleed problem also have a problem with the screen seeming loose? When I push on my screen I can hear some creaking.

Ingesting and unrelated.
Here are my chronicles:
1st G pad: white 310 serial. Had both regular and 7 light bleed. Had not readabout this issue before returned it.
2nd G pad: Black don't recall serial. Good build quality no light bleed but 7 light issue. Now aware this is a common problem. Decide to exchange and go to best buy inspect 2 others (sales person let me setup 3 tablets and look best I could for issues. All 3 had the 7 light thing so figured this must just be a characteristic of the lcd they use in this tablet. So took home
3rd Gpad white w 11 build which in store I thought was better than the 2nd for the 7 light issue.
For Home was wrong and based on what I have read and my assessment I was resigned to the fact that they would all be this way and was going to keep. At this point I stated this thread after reading about some people who did not have this issue, one of them having a December or 312 build which I have been unable to find anywhere.
The build quality was bad in this replacement however. The edges of the tablet were sharp with a seam the others didn't have. Less than 1 day later the bottom right of the tablet must have been lose as depending on how I gripped it, it would creak and pop as if the plastic was coming off and snapping back.
At this point I decided I would return as a defect and got
G pad 4: white 310 build.
Was similar to second tab in buildwith almost no light bleed but had the 7 light issueand also felt the lower right part of screen at edge of bezel felt it had some give. I am now fed up and neuroticabout all this add I am in vacation in the USA and we don't yet have these in Canada.
Wanted to settle it. Found one other best but that head in store stock and it was rainy so I said last try to get at least one with only the 7 light issue.
Picked up a black one. 310 serial.
Took it home knowing that I'd it was no good I would say screw it and get ipad mini.
This one is nearly perfect.
Even at 0 the 7 lights are almost invisible. I have to look for them as I know they should be there. There is just a bit of traditional light bleed visible at 100% brightness in a dark room and in dark room I am rarely above 40%. Build quality is great and screen doesn't have any significant yellow cast.
I love it!!!!
From all my craziness I have discovered a few things that might explain the issues with this tablet.
1) 7light issue is there in every tablet. It is the way the lcd back lights work. The reason I and others likely have a tablet that doesn't exhibit it is due to something else. Brightness of the screen. By this I mean that all the tablets that have the 7 light issue can be dimmed incredibly low at the 0 setting.
Much lower than an ipad other tablet or my Samsung note 3.
My best screen seems noticeably brighter at lowest brightness. When reading an ebook at lowest brightness with white wiring on Black background the text is brighter in this one. So it could be that my 0 brightness calibration of the screen is closer to a 20 on one of the screens exhibiting the 7 light issue.
2) White tablet shows fewer finer prints if that is an issue but the metal black back is sweet!
3)With the voice Siri like app you can have option to enable or disable it listening for a hot word to activate it. With mine turned off my standby battery life is great even with 3 email accounts (1a push exchange account) going. We are taking 1% every 4-6 hours. This is much better than every tablet I have hadand my phone. This in spite of wifi on during sleep.
4) In spite of my issues of which in retrospect I would have been fine with my first 2 tablets and my current one I love this tablet.
It is a much better size than the lost nexus 7 2013 it replaced. Having expandable storage Ada much needed versatility. It does not win in any one category like an ipad or Nexus might but it hits all my desires from stereo speakersto God look to nice screen to great ergonomics.

311, have the light bleed. thought of exchanging it because it somewhat bothers me when I'm web surfing at night in landscape, but I figured out it doesn't worth the effort becuae probably most of the other slates have this problem too. I was right.
I think we should all be a little bit less perfectionists about our tablet, and give more thought to the good things at the tablet + focus on more important issues in our lives (At least I know I should )
I would like to buy G Pad but before ordering it in online store (Poland) I sent them a message asking for checking some G Pads randomly. The result is shocking: first 10 G Pads have light bleed at the bottom of the screen. After that they decided to check all tablets in stock. It turned out that all of them (> 50) have light bleed at the bottom of the screen. Product manager told me that they will contact with distributor of LG in Poland requesting clarification on that issue and they want to return all G Pads and replace them with good ones.
Will let you know how things will go on.

I have stud I think this is less a defect and more a characteristic of this screen technology. Based on the unit I now which does not have it I can say that mine does not get as dim at 0 percent brightness. Could be like with all LCD tech that below a certain brightness things like this are visible. It is a trade off in that you are getting a screen that can go dimmer but with those lights visible.

I'm on S/N 311 and I got no bleed at the bottom, but at higher brightness I got a pretty serious bleed at the top left corner, that's left of the LG Logo. I don't notice it normally but when I use the tablet in landscape that spot is covered by the black software key bar, making it stand somewhat out. I'm not gonna get it replaced, I played that game with my SGS-II back in 2011, you ARE going to find something else on the new unit cause you'll have gone in nitpicky mode.
Besides at this price, which is one third of what I paid for my Note 3 on launch day, you can allow a tiny few beauty marks.
Exchanged a black gpad because of a 0.5 inch yellow line at the top of the screen. Don't know the serial number unfortunately.
Got a 312 now as replacement. This has the light bleed at the bottom as well. But I have not seen any of the other issues like the blue line or the issue above. The bleed is noticable, but I might keep it anyway because most of the time i use it in portrait at high brightness....
