I ordered it on T-Mobile out of desperation bc I didnt want to wait another 3 weeks for google to get it in. Ill have it on monday and find out how much t-mobile has put their crap on the phone. Anyways when i agreed to the new contract the etf read to me over the phone was said to be up to 200 dollars. I would tell you that if you dont return the equipment they will charge you the etf and the retail price of the phone.

What sense would it make for T-Mobile to allow you to do this? More than likely, they're going to force you to pay full price for the device as well.

Yes, so you'll pay $199 plus $200 ETF plus first month of service plus tax and activation fee. So it's about the same as buying it outright.

I got the phone through T-Mobile. I can confirm there is no T-Mobile bloatware on it. It is pure Android 4.2 goodness

I think it also affects your credit if you cancel the contract.

phone bills doesnt count towards credit score. I would of had beautiful credit score by now

if you cancel they charge you there full retail price

someone on reddit did it, so i followed suit. i'll end up paying a bit more with the first month's cost, but other than that, if you sign up for it with a classic plan and not a value plan(that means you'd be paying for the device full retail or with month payments), you'll just be paying $200+$200ETF+Tax+$35 Activation+first month of service, but that not much more than you'd be paying besides, and you're getting the service, so...
I haven't actually cancelled the contract yet as i was just planning to do it online, but their website has been slow today, and it doesnt seem that i can fully access my account online yet.

You guys really need to become a bit more patient. I'm one of the biggest Android enthusiasts out there and I'm without a phone because my Galaxy Nexus is being repaired but I'm still waiting despite back order status.
I hate to be a little political and tell people how they should be spending their money but if you wanted to piss it away by paying about an extra hundred dollars for a phone you can get readily on eBay for about $50 less or you know, just wait like everyone else, you could've donated that amount and saved a fair number of lives in Africa or insert other third world country.

I believe that problem does not apply to me. Giving people money blindly does not guarantee that their lives will improve. Those countries need infrastructure, not money.

No, it won't. If you pay the ETF, you've complied with the terms of the contract. It would only be reported to a credit agency if you refused to pay the ETF and they decided to send it to report you to the credit bureaus.

The only way you can cancel is by calling customer service. You can't do it online or at a T-Mobile store.

Does anybody know where I could possibly buy this awesome phone without a contract? Ebay is the obvious answer but I was hoping for an etailer where I could put in a preorder.

You *might* have a problem with a representative not wanting to sell it to you off contract because they will miss out on the commission. If that happens just tell them it is a gift for a Sprint Customer(Your mom or whoever).

This is why I saved a copy of the pre-order page saying that I can reserve and pay $500 off contract.
im switching to sprint from t-mobile for this phone, or probably just keeping both since i want to keep my nexus active, but is there any incentive for me to buy off contract if i am a new customer?

Could you show me where exactly it says this? I'm not seeing it. All I see mentioning the retail price is, "If you're not eligible for an upgrade, you'll need to pay full retail price, $499.99."
I'd like to save a copy to take with me on pickup day too. =)

$500 is the unsubsidized price, so no worries.
Just letting you know, Sprint has put out orders to NOT sell this as a cold handset, you HAVE to activate the phone if you're buying it in store, even if you pay full retail. They want subscribers, not to take a loss on the handsets for no return.
So you're saying that I can't, as a current sprint subscriber, unbox MY phone at MY discretion?? The last thing I want is some monkey behind the desk unboxing my $500 device and leaving fingerprints all over it just because it needed to be activated before I left the store. This happened with my Evo and bothered the heck out of me; although I understand in that case as I was a new subscriber having a number ported over AND purchasing the device at a subsidized price (should still be able to activate the phone at my leisure but whatever). However, I should be able to purchase the device at "full" price, take it home, unbox it myself, and activate it through the established means since I'm already under contract and past my 30 trial period. They will be getting paid either way.
P.S. Unless activation refers to line activation, as opposed to phone activation. Big difference.
P.S.S. Is sprint's "subsidized off-contract" price of $499.99 (compared to $549.99 at, say, RS) only for new subscribers and/or upgraders? In any case, that "no cold handset" policy is about as clear as mud to me right now.

Unless a phone is factory unlocked or unlockable I don't see what the benefit of doing this would be. To my knowledge you can buy the phone from vendors like Best Buy without needing to activate the phone and just have it shipped to your house. Just be ready to shell out $649.00.

The low price is there to entice people who don't want to renew a contract to buy it from them as opposed to another vendor. This in conjunction with the "no cold phone sold" policy allows them to ensure that every Epic sold by them will either retain a current subscriber or add a new one so they will be making that money back. You can have a cold unactivated phone mailed to your house by another vendor but you will be spending more than $499 and won't have the added convenience of optionally having the purchase billed to your account.
According to RS, Samsung's SRP is $699.99.

What about a new customer who just wants to pay full price for the phone, pick a plan and pay month-to-month? Are you saying this is not possible? He would have to make a two-year commitment even with an unsubsidized phone? That makes no sense.

I was speaking in terms of existing sprint customer, so my bad. That's a very good question and I'm not sure. But even the unsubsidized price isn't really unsubsidized. $699.99 is the SRP so even at the $499.99 price point they are taking a loss. From all indications, the $499.99 price point is for existing customers under contract that are not eligible for an upgrade. It wouldn't make sense for Sprint to take a loss on a phone knowing that they didn't have that customer locked into a contract to recoup the money. With that said, the only way I would see sprint allowing new subscribers to enter into a month-by-month agreement would be if they either sold phones at their cost or significantly increased the monthly service rates and I haven't seen that, personally.

You can't pay "month-to-month" on Sprint. If you open a new line, you must sign a new 2-year contract. I believe every carrier except for T-Mobile does this.
So if I am an existing sprint customer and I wanted to buy this phone at full price and give it as a gift to another sprint customer I won't be able to because I can't leave the store without activating it?

I'm in that same boat... Usually you can re-coup most of what you paid for the original unit and come out very little out of pocket to pick up a new handset.
I bought two at full price. I'm also on the best plan available to mankind, EM+ no contract.
Full price and in my hands. Screen is nice.

It's the even more plus plan. They stopped featuring it on the website but are (as of now) still selling it through t-mobile stores. It's not officially promoted anymore that's why you have to ask for it at your local t-mobile store.
With the EM+ plan I get 2 lines, 1500 minutes, unlimited text and web for $120. Saves me having to get a landline.
It is available at tmobile. EM+ is $59.99 for unlimited text, unlimited data and 500 minutes. If you buy this phone on contract, the exact same plan costs $79.99 and you tied to tmobile for 2 years. It is much cheaper buying the phone at full price and getting the cheaper plan on EM+.
Tmobile took the EM+ plan off their website, but you can still get it my calling tmobile or going to a store a requesting it.
I make over 80k a year and have a 700 credit score and they wouldn't give it to me for $199. I could only get $100 off with a 2 year service plan. Wtf?

I had to get mine for full price. Apparently I was only eligible for some thing where I pay the first month upfront and pay slightly more for the phone because my credit doesn't exist, and the Nexus couldn't be activated with that option. Instead, I got a "free" phone with contract, then I just got an unlocked Nexus to put on my account. Unfortunately, they'd only let me get a free Sony Ericsson instead of an LG Optimus since it was their idea in the first place. Best Buy did pay my first month's contract and all fees that go with the first activation, though. That made me very happy since it was about $190.

Do what I did:
Get a 2-year contract with a free LG Optimus then get an unlocked Nexus. You can sell the Optimus for quite a bit (definitely more than $100).

yeah. My idea is to do what someone else suggested. Go get a free phone and then pay full price for the Nexus S. I can sell the free phone andmake soem $$ back. OR i could just get a contract free monthly plan and buy the Nexus S for full price. That way i wont be locked into a contract. Problem is, there is only 4 stores in my area that are the Best Buy Mobile stores where they have boxes and boxes of Nexus S phones.
To be honest, i dont know what the problem is with the Best Buy Mobile i went to. If i can qualify for a $250,000 house with no issues, i think i can buy a dam phone for the 2 year contract price.
Lets see how much i can sell the Nexus One i have for on Craigslist. That may help me decide.

I was approved for a $400k mortgage, but not a $200 phone?! What?
So, I'm in the store, bewildered, and then asked them to put the plan in my wife's name (I was getting a family plan). So, we type in all her info, totally expecting everything to be ok, and her credit check comes back exactly the same as mine.
We have good credit, my wife and I make good money, and we pay our bills on time. I'm still in shock.
I've spent all day on the phone with Best Buy, T-Mobile, and Transunion to try and figure out what happened and I still don't know.
The only thing I can think of is we recently bought a new home and we've only been there for 1.5 years, but seriously. All this because of that?!
And the guy at Best Buy is telling me about this Flex Plan thing, and I'm just like, hold up -- just give me the two year contract. I totally didn't understand what he was saying. The one thing we have in common is a recent house purchase. Mine is about 14 months. My credit is fine, not perfect, but still very good.
I felt the same exact way "just give me the 2 year contract price and stop trying to confuse the **** out of me with all this other crap."
Why the hell would I pay $490 for a phone AND a 2 year contract when I can just buy the stupid phone for $530? I think ill just wait for an att version or the PlayStation phone. Screw T-Mobile.

I got mine at Best Buy and I bought it without any contract at all. I had nothing to cancel, still paid the $799.00 plus tax.
They said that they got an email from Verizon authorizing them to sell it without any contract.

If you are interested in still having 3g without the contract, you will have to take it into Verizon after your purchase (you may be able to just do this at Best Buy) to activate your device on their network. You can't activate it right off the device like the iPad.
Here is the plan you are looking at (without signing a contract)
20$=1gig/mo 35$=3gig/mo 50$=5 gigs/mo or 80$=10 gigs/mo
The plan you'll be choosing is called month to month, and although you will not sign a contract, they will still run a credit check, so if you have bad credit, you will need to pay a security deposit. If you don't, you will not pay anything at the time of activation because it's not a prepayed plan (Verizon only has prepaid plans available for smart phones). You will pay your bill at the end of the month, and if you go over your allotted data, you will be charged 10$/gig (I'm pretty sure about that one, but you might want to ask). Also, you're first bill will come with surcharges and activation fees that will equal up to 65$ plus the price of the plan you choose.
Canceling your month to month plan will not charge anything, however getting it reassigned will cost an additional 15$

If I'm not mistaken Motorola has to charge state tax everywhere they have a physical shop. Since there's nothing like a "motorola store" maybe it's linked to Verizon? And they seem to be present in all states I had to pay MD state tax b/c I couldn't find the motorola shop directly on amazon or else I'd done that!
Wife wants me to wait for the wifi only version, at least there is one rational person in the family. Hopefully it will be out soon.

Don't try getting the Costco 90 day returnable Xoom without the month to month contract. They apparently are still on the policy requiring you to sign up (with credit check) before you can purchase through them.
I went around that whole thing including talking to the manager at Costco and the Regional Manager of the kiosk telling them they are the only ones following that old policy.

I was the first one to buy at my local Costco on launch day and was told the same thing. I kept forcing the Verizon kiosk guy to keep calling people until someone finally told him that it is no longer required.

Nexus 4 Dilemma. Need Your Advice......................

So a local T Mobile store has 5 in stock. Of course at first I was initially excited but the feeling quickly went away as I thought to myself, "Is it worth the trouble?" My initial plan was to buy the phone on contract for $150 (discounted for work), sign up for the cheapest what ever classic plan then leave. Figured I'd cancel it in a few days then head over to Walmart and get the 30$ Prepaid plan. The thing is, I am planning on moving overseas In February so being unlocked is key. It seems that it is unlocked so thats not the issue. The problem is the termination fee might not be 200 as I initially thought but would be for the remainder of the phone (about $350). I don't know if that is comfirmed but still.
If you were in my shoes, would you chance the fees just to have the phone a month early (and be one of those evil posters who post about it) or just bite the bullet and wait for a second batch that you might not even have a chance to order from?
I have a 2 year old optimus but in no rush to have it in my hands but then again, it would be awesome to be one of the first to have it.
Any advice, suggestions, thoughts are appreciated.

That's not a very bright idea...ANY US CARRIER will not allow you to buy a device on contract price then cancel without paying the early termination fee, services used fees, taxes and the price of the device in full if you do not return it. There is no way around that because you must return the equipment before they will do any line cancellations. The only option you would have is to buy it at FULL RETAIL PRICE ($499.99) from t-mobile and get a prepaid $1 per day plan so you can get the unlock code sent to you via email. Trying to play with phone subsidies does not work.
Keep the following things in mind:
1. You may have to pay an activation fee.
2. You will probably have to pay for the first month of service.
3. ETF may be more than $200 (I'm not sure how much it actually is).
Tmobile's ETF is $200 but you might have to also pay the difference in the retail price if you want to keep the phone
honestly that not a problem just sign up with the contact and everything and when u call in to cancel your contact just tell them that your going to that your joining the army and there u go no contact cancellation fee

Actually, this will not always work. For your ETF to be waived for military deployment, active orders will need to be provided to Customer Relations. Without it, all ETF and fees will be valid.

And you should also keep in mind that the retail price they use may not be the low $350 that Google is charging through the play store. From what I've read, LG's suggested retail price for the phone is actually $499 so you may end up having to pay that to T-Mobile if you cancel.

How many of you will root your AT&T while youre on a Next plan?

I still owe like $400 on my LG G4, so I guess technically I dont even own my phone.
How many of you will be rooting and flashing even though youre on a next plan?
What happens when youre on an AT&T Next 12 plan and you go to hand your phone in 12 months from now?
This is when you restore the device back to factory and they are non-the-wiser about any of it.
.....They really do not go out of their way to discover if you rooted or not (at least around here they don't).

I see that there is a KDZ from porto rico for the ATT, and there is not yet a TOT. What is the difference between KDZ and TOT, will they remove your custom TWRP recovery partition?

You guys really need to look into second hand devices. I bought my Verizon G4 (unlocked and can be used on AT&T) off Swappa for $360. It's like new and came with the original box, accessories, and a case.
If you don't have the cash up front, set up a credit card with your PayPal account and make the same monthly payments that you would be paying to the phone carrier. Only difference is now you're paying about half of the price you would be originally and you OWN the phone. Something new comes out..... Pick it up off Swappa (or CL, celltraderonline.com, eBay, Amazon, etc) and sell your old one on a similar outlet. There's even Facebook pages devoted to buying/selling phones.
I haven't been under contract with Verizon (mainly because of my grandfathered unlimited data) for years. I own/use every new device that comes out and most of the time I make a few bucks when I sell the old one. I can't understand why people pay full price for a phone, or finance it just to trade in on another one. We pay high cell phone rates in the U.S. because carriers subsidize phones. If we're paying the high rates AND paying full price for phones, that's a win-win for them.

Yeah for the record I really regret doing their plan. I way overpaid for my device.
If I sell it and pay the phone off ill be out an extra couple hundred bucks. The best I can do now is pay it off early and own it. Either that or just keep paying the minimum payment and then hand it over after 12 months for a brand new flagship but then be back in the same exact spot as before.
The key here I learned is patience. Let the flagship come out, wait 2 months and then hit Swappa.
I think ill pay off the device early in a few months and then go crazy with flashing and the like.

I agree with this MUCH cheaper. Even though I went through the next program to get my iPhone 6 several months ago, I just paid it off the next day onto my credit card (Got $200 cash back from it lol) SO I had $200 off ON TOP of I got AT&T to pay my phone bill for a month which was another $174. Because of paying it off early, credit card etc. After it was said and done I have about $250 in a brand new iPhone 6.
But anyway even I were to follow the next program it would rip me off by the time that 12 months came, I wouldnt get half of what I could sell it online for.

Not sure where youre getting like 30% cash back from, thats insane, also I havent heard of AT&T paying peoples phone bills for early payoffs.
Yeah the used device average sold price on Swappa has already plummeted down to $450, the more I think about my plan of action, ill try and pay off the phone in the next few months so I at least own the damn thing.

each time I make a large purchase I look for a credit card which gives you so much back for spending a certain amount.
AT&T has a credit card if you spend $2k in 3 months you get up to $650 credit on a phone. So pretty much a free phone.
Also the paying my bill was part of me being able to help me afford the phone. If I didn't buy the phone they wouldn't had credited me it as they couldn't give a discount on the iPhone it's self.

So are you opening and closing credit cards every time you make a large purchase? My Amex only gives me 1-3% cash back on purchases and we use it for almost everything. It seems like they have me $150 the first 3 months for spending a couple grand.
At some point, credit card companies would no longer give you the promos and it would wreck your credit opening and closing cards.

While I agree in the idea of buying second hand devices. I can't speak for other carriers but on AT&Ts Next plan the person outright owns the phone on a 0% finance plan. Yes there are trade in months and such but that's just it, trade in the phone and they recover the cost from a resale. They give you the full financing disclosure showing the 0% Apr and other such disclosures.
Edit: Back on topic. I have Next and I will be rooting tonight.
Also why would someone want to pay off something that is an at cost price of a brand new device financed with 0% with a credit card that will charge financing. Suddenly the device now costs more because of the fact the credit card is likely not 0% Apr.
The only advantage to credit card financing is the ability to trade up whenever you want like you state.

Because buying 2nd hand is typically half the price of buying new. So get a 0% card for 12 months or even one that charges 30% interest. No matter how you look at it, you'll pay less than full retail when it's paid off.

Well its true, I am not being charged any interest and I have more spending power right now because of that. I can just hand them $17 a month and use the rest of my paycheck on whatever I want.
But I also overpaid for my device by at least $200 to be able to have that luxury. So technically I paid that interest, just up front.

Full price @ 0% is still a bad deal IMHO. I sorta look at phones like cars. The MSRP price is the starting price for negotiations. It's the price that no one pays that gives salesmen the ability to say "but this is how much it's really worth, you're getting a great deal".
Overseas carriers don't subsidize plans so their monthly rates are much lower than ours. I can justify full price for those guys, but not in the U.S.

Maybe I'm just a village idiot here, but what is a cheaper price? Lol My Next plan financed this at $650ish on June 5th release day.(i don't have the exact about in front of me) That was the purchase it now price that day. I saw it priced higher on Amazon that day. I don't count eBay or swappa and such.

Its the same with when I bought my car, I had a ton in savings and was only going to finance a very very small part.
So he was pushing low payments on me, saying we can get you this % and this low of a payment, and i straight up told him he could make my payments $600 a month and i wouldnt care because I intended on paying it off very quickly, all I cared about was bottom dollar.
If only I bought my phones with the same mindset!

Sort of same here, A lot just look at the monthly payments, when sometimes they could prob be paying high interest on them.
I was sort of the opposite with my car purchases but I first worked on getting the actual price down, then work out that monthly payment, etc.
The only reason I would use next is if I got a deal OR I must really want a device without waiting for it (Then regret it later) lol.
