HoRNDIS: USB tethering driver for Mac OS X - Android Software Development

Hi!
I spent the last week or so working on a project that I call HoRNDIS (pronounce: "horrendous") -- a Mac OS X driver that allows you to use your Android phone's native USB tethering mode.
It's a kernel extension, and requires NO software installed on your phone, and NO background apps on your Mac; if your phone supports RNDIS tethering, you're good to go! To make you salivate a little more, it looks like this when it's running:
{

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",

}
I've tested it on my machines, and a few of my friends have tested it on their machines, but it hasn't gotten *hugely* wide testing yet, which is why I'm still tagging it as a [BETA].
If you're interested, give it a shot... you can grab it from my web site, and if you're so inclined, get the source on GitHub, too.
Let me know if it works for you!

This is awesome!
This works great on my VZW GS3. Seems more stable than wi-fi tethering. Easy to set up. Been looking for something like this for a while.

Hey, this works great! I've tried hundreds of tips for my SGS and none worked until this one. Thank you very much.
I have one question, though. I'd like to tether my phone WIFI connection to my Mac (not only the 3G connection). Is it possible with this kernel extension? I tried but it didn't work with the Wifi, only with 3G.
I don't know if this is not possible at all, even on Windows, or anything else.

At least on my Galaxy Nexus, that works. You might be able to do that with CM?
Not sure why you would want to do that, though...

This works fantastic on a Nexus 4 on 4.2. Anywhere I can donate a few bucks for beer money?

Works great on a TMo SGS3. Thank you!

This is awesome!

Fantastic. Works great on my Samsung Galaxy SII HD LTE (E120S).

i'm going to try this!! you are the man!!! thanks!!

Confirmed Working
On Sammy Galaxy S2 Skyrocket on CM10 (stable & latest nightly) and OSX 10.7.5.
If it doesn't work at first. Make sure you reboot your Mac and then give it time to connect with your Android.
Thanks for this! I hate using bluetooth for anything and I have found that hotspot really makes this particular phone get really hot. Should help out with that since it is not transmitting via Wi-FI hotspot, saving my components within the phone!
Thanks!

Works flawlessly with the Nexus 4 on the Three network (DC-HSDPA+). Received 8Mb/s d/l vs 1.2 Mb/s up. Very happy.

Hm..
Ive got a Desire HD running a port of CM10
Macbook Pro with Lion (and i doubt this is causing problems, but i have a linux partition that i installed a tonne of wireless drivers on to get it to work XD )
Anyhow, when my phone is plugged in, nothing pops up in settings or anything, i installed the Rel1 package and installed it a second time as it wasn't working. It still isn't working though :L
Also, i have the interface, 'Android Phone' alongside bluetooth, wifi etc.. but it doesn't have a data transfer icon, but a telephone icon?
Do you think this is due to port (CM10), my OS X version, or somehow connected to Linux (im not really sure how it could be, but I'm just putting it as I did have to spend a long time setting up wireless on it, and may have somehow messed up something on mac)

Thanks for the words of encouragement, everyone! I'm glad to hear that this is useful to people.

Good to hear it works for you! I'm thinking that for this I'll take a similar policy to what I did in the days of the unrevoked project; if you found this software useful, you might want to consider donating to an organization that's been fighting for years to make it possible to do this kind of work: the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Can you try HoRNDIS-n1-test.pkg? I think that this is a similar issue to what I saw on a CM9 n1; that should fix things up for you. If that doesn't, can you file a bug in the issue tracker so I can help figure out what's going on here?
Thanks!

what is the advantage of this over PDANET?

Doesn't PDANET install actual software?
From running this, it is a kernel extension so it just works.... no need to really do any settings...
Mine just worked....
PDANET also costs doesn't it?

Additionally, it doesn't require an 'emulation' IP stack on the phone side, so performance and compatibility may end up slightly better.

anyone know of a free sms agent?

New version should support CyanogenMod phones better (if it wasn't detecting your phone, try again), and properly complain on 32-bit kernel systems; I think this is stable enough to no longer be [BETA] (Mods, feel free to remove the [BETA] from the subject). Thanks for all the kind words from everyone.

Hi!
I installed it yesterday afternoon, tried to log-in for a couple of hours but it only worked this morning. I have already chatted with a friend using whatsapp on iphone! Cgorki, thx for sharing.
I've been running and using it for almost 6 hours now with mobile internet always on and listening to music but when I go into battery usage this doesn't show up. Does this mean that it doesn't use battery or is there something else? It doesn't seem to drain a lot of battery because I still have about 85% left.
Thank you..
...well they obviously developed an app which charges your battery instead of draining it
I also have no problems communicating with iPhone users, also able to attach maps links, voice messages, pictures and videos
Uh, is this supposed to be distributed? I thought it's still a close beta.

When the owner provides a direct Link to the apk on his own servers, it doesn't really look like a closed beta.
Loving it. Thanks so much
Still random disconnects when sleeping. It only works after app and service are restarted.
Had it on the iphone, works great. I have been waiting for this for months and months now, but they still don't want to make it final. Either they are slow, it is just too hard to work with without the push thingy á la iphone.

well if you develop for android, you develop for more than only one device like for iphone, thats why it takes longer... btw. I can not confirm disconnects while phone is in sleep mode...
Update was released today, you can update the app via the built-in updater

Yes I noticed the update. I am using wifi only for this week. From next week on, I have a new contract with mobile data. Maybe there is a problem connecting after a while of disconnecting.

That's weird, I receive messages without ever opening it first, straight after booting and completely leaving the phone alone.
Under settings it always says service has started right on the minute that I booted my phone
*edit* Sorry I think I misread you, last night it gave me the option to install the latest version, and the change log said it fixed many random crashes, so far running great. But I'm sure you've upgraded
so far i can NOT use it, says auth failed.. any tips?
if you want the auth to run, email the support (even if the app says do not!) I did that and I got my access about 2-3 days.

mailing them will do nothing, I'm pretty sure they didn't put you on any "beta list"
you get your access just by trying to contact their servers, after hours/days your phone is successfully registered, thats what me and many other users have experienced.
I must have sent 14 messages untill I got through. Dont try it more than once, keep trying every couple of hours. Or even the next day. Once you get the auth, all reinstalls will be good to go.
Has anybody read the EULA?
It's talking about a "free trial period", and then a subscription fee per year.
Is that the same with the iPhone-app?

Car Home Project

I am wondering if anyone can take up this little project.
Basically this is the Car Home from the T-Mobile Vibrant and i am wondering if anyone can play around with it so that A: it can fit on the Galaxy Tab (app does not center properly as you can see from the picture), B: if the Contact icon can be made to work properly (as you can see an error mesage comes up) and C:when selecting the search icon nothing happens(the one on the right hand side of the contact icon)

Maybe just not in the 1 day since you posted it.
There's already a few good car home apps that work fine on the tab, which may be partially responsible for peoples reluctance to spend their spare time on this project also.
It's probably just a case of changing the name of the app it's calling, why not take the APK apart and see if you can work it out yourself?
i extracted the apk, but that's as far as i can go. have no idea what to do
this can get the ball rolling
as you can see there are three folders layout, layout-land, and layout-port
i dont know how to mess with xml files or dev in any other way, so someone can take a crack at this.

yea, the default google one is pretty good. i plan to use it in my car w/my tab and the samsung car mount.
on a side note, using the car mount right now just on my glass desk. works pretty dang well too!
That's pretty cool.
Looks like most of the images are intended for a 480x800 display, which is the resolution of the vibrant. You'd probably need to go through and scale a number of the images to fit the higher resolution screen of the tab. (Edit: Looks like the app is intelligent enough to scale this itself)
It's possibly a fair bit of work, but probably not all that hard. You mainly just need to extract it, work out what to edit, make the required changes, remove the META-INF tag and then manually resign and recreate the .apk. Not quite as straightforward as that (you'll need the Android SDK for a start). Might be a good exercise though.
I might have a play just for something to do. Maybe
Edit: Right, as with most things, _way_ more difficult than I estimated. I've decompiled the APK and I'm having a poke around in the sourcecode. I'll see how I go, but it's quite possible that I'll end up giving up and putting it in the "too hard" basket. Disclaimer: I'm completely unfamiliar with this sort of code so I'm having to decipher the syntax as I go. Editing just the graphics is a piece of cake, changing application calls and layout is a different story.
I managed to get most of it sorted. The icons are now centered and the Contacts button works. The search button doesn't even seem to be _trying_ to do anything though, so I'm not sure what it's supposed to achieve. I might just get rid of it, a text-based search in a car dock app seems a bit redundant to me.
I don't get a "Voice Search" icon on mine, I get a "Browser" icon instead, so I'd be interested in seeing what happens on yours.
The .apk is a little larger than the original, probably as it's being compiled against a newer SDK.

I fixed the "Alarm" option not working with the Home dock application as well:

Great work on the Car Home, but i was wondering if you could make some changes:
This what it looks like on my Vibrant, any way you can get to look this way?
and in regards to the Desk Home, the Alarm does not work i get an error message:
and one question on the Desk Home, on the weather icon next to the date and time shouldn't it show the current temperature? on both the Vibrant and Tab it just shows 00 C, not that important but it is weird that it does not update after you set the City and change the temperature to F on the Daily briefing icon.
Thank you again for your help.
The apk on your vibrant must be different, the one I'm working on doesn't even have the images for "Phone" or "Music".
As for the alarm, I've no idea, it works fine here. I'm running the JME firmware which may have something to do with things.
The weather displays 00 if it doesn't have a net connection, it works fine as soon as it can access the server, but it looks like you've got data running. Can you put it on Wireless and see if it updates then?
knightnz said:
I don't understand why you're getting different icons than I am. It'd take me a lot of work to decipher it and try to fix things, someone who has a better understanding of smali code would need to have a look at it.

The Car Home from my Vibrant i got it via the market when it was available, the one currently on my tab i got it from the link on my first post so i could not tell you why they are different. Well i gave it a try, i'll keep it the way it is but it looks better than before and at least the contacts work. Thanks.
Regarding the alarm i am lost, i am running Roto's JME v4 so not sure if that has anything to do with it.
In regards to weather on the Desk Home i'll try and get better signal and i'll try wifi connection see if makes a difference and i'll report.

Sprint's new emergency alert system on any 4.1 NS4G roms

I was playing around with some different aosp roms the other day and I thought since the new emergency alert system Sprint was so kind to give us in the 4.1.1 ota update is such a great new feature to have maybe I should try to get it to work on a rom other than the OTA. Well, it turns out it 'just works' by default!! The app will not install the traditional way, but if you copy it to /system/app and change permissions to rw-r--r-- it works! The menu shows up in system settings>wireless & networks more> cell broadcasts

FEMA wow, no way is this coming near my phone, eff that
YAY! Now I can be informed via Klaxon that rain sometimes causes flash floods. If you use this, keep your phone on mute or people in theaters and conference rooms will hate you. Personal embarrassing experience talking here.
I would be okay with it if you could shut off the alarm. Trust me, it's nothing like any other notifications else that exist on your phone. I want to know about Amber Alerts, and very severe weather events, but this appears to be all or nothing. Imagine the chaos if everyone had this on their phones and they all went off at once, which I assume must be the intent. Talk about shouting fire in a crowded theater. Not well thought out, but neither is FEMA.
for the record this was on an epic 4g touch, i assume the same behavior on anything else unless the federal govt is building device specific apps

did you not see the screenshots I posted?? There are toggles for different types of alerts. And you can turn notifications off, as well as test notifications. Also, if you don't like your alarm notification, just change it. We live in a world where rooted phones are possible and you can do these things It's as easy as swapping ogg files!
no, actually i did not, thank you for calling my attention to them. apparently pictures get cut out when i access xda from behind a firewall, literally looks like there's nothing there on pc, but tapatalk on my ns4g has them. Maybe they are getting it right, I will have to take another look at it. When I found it on my nonrooted e4gt, it looked nothing like this.

Great rom.
I tried playing around with it and for some reason it wont work.
Idk i really want to have this feature but for some reason i cant figure it out.
Lets just review.
I move the apk to /system/apps.
Then fix permissions to rw--r--r.
Reboot
Fix permissions in cwm.
Reboot check settings?
Is there something im missing?
Try accessing it from Messaging app. Hit settings.
If I can find some time this afternoon I will flash RBJ and see if I can figure out what's up
I will also look into it also but not for myself, lol. I hate the alerts.
This works on today's port off rasbeanjelly for ns4g by rustyjay. I used root explorer to move the apk to system/app, changed permissions to rw-r--r--, and rebooted. No need to go to cwm.

Coming from android and wp is a breath of fresh air.
I love how all apps use the same font and general style. Next up, a surface pro for work.

If you have had Lumia 925, you would have got many other benefits of Nokia exclusive apps.

you can dl most of the nokia apps including the nav app.
@glenroebuck: There are two ATIV S models; I'm guessing you got the SGH-T899M since it has LTE? If possible, please test a couple things for me:
1) Go to Settings -> About -> More Info, and list the OS, Radio, and Firmware version numbers.
2) Go to Settings -> Internet Sharing, and try to enable it (even if your plan doesn't support it, tell me what error message you get).
I'm trying to track down something that might be a problem with the phone or might be a problem with the OS or might just be a problem with my device, and there aren't many USA users of the SGH-T899M it seems.
os 8.0.10211.204
Firmware 2212.12.12.2
radio 2212.12.12.2
radio firmware 0.0.0.0
turned it on and it told me there is no cellular data connection to share right now.
Damn... that's the same error I get (even though it's blatantly false; I get that error even while I'm streaming music and downloading apps over said data connection).
Same version info too. They apparently have March and April 2013 updates, but those might only be for the other ATIV S model... I can't get them myself.

that is weird I only ever got it when you had me test it although today in my home city of clevlelad I got lte in some places but not near my home and it completly lost signal...like emergency calls only. I had to reboot to get it back. Did not have those issues in anaheim and Las Vegas both lte areas - but we are not official yet here in cle.
You're on T-Mobile, right? Set the APN to "fast.t-mobile.com" (no username or password) and it should work on both HSPA+ ("4G") and LTE (you'll briefly lose data when switching, but it comes back quickly; if that's too annoying then disable LTE). I think the APN info built into the phone for T-Mobile is wrong or possibly just outdated, which is why it doesn't switch to LTE gracefully and also why tethering doesn't work (tethering uses a different APN, "pcweb.tmobile.com", note the lack of a hyphen in this one).
People with the other model ATIV S have reported that after installing the April firmware update, they're able to install an app called "APN" that automatically configures their phone, including enabling tethering (although probably not LTE, which I believe is unavailable on that model). There is an app called "APNs" in the store for the T899M, but it doesn't have the auto-config option, nor the ability to set a tethering APN.

I used the apn app from samsung to configure fast.t-mobile.com when I was in vegas to get lte to work. It has been working ever since only yesterday was the first time i experienced no network after coming off LTE but again it is not official here in Cleveland so that might be the issue.
Other than that I love this phone. Since I have had a zune account for ever - if I shazam a song it lets me dl it directly from xbox store (zune account = xbox music acccount) Myappfree is a great way to get good apps for nothing. (they have a daily free app) and really any app I would use on android or iphone - there is the same or a similar app here. and the Ativ is such an pretty phone lol...people always ask me "is that the new s4?" then I explain it is a windows phone and they get a blank look

For camera I like Blink or Photogram (not really nokia apps) You can get Here Maps too.
Does any one have problem when you shutdown device or restart that volume reset to 20/30 ?
I mean I have volume set to 30/30, and i noticed after reboot or power off that volume is 20/30 :S

Android for Work compatibility?

I've done quite a bit of searching, and input every search term I can think of, but haven't been able to find an answer to this question: Does anyone know if the Zenfone 2 Laser ze551kl supports Work Profiles for Android for Work?
*EDIT* -- I figured out a way that people can test to see if their phone natively supports Work Profiles (required for Android for Work using Google's MDM): Test DPC, Google's profile test app for developers. If you (or anyone else reading this) is able, could you download Test DPC on your ze551kl and at least go through the initial steps in setup? If the phone doesn't support Work Profiles it will through up a message saying as much (tested the app on an s4, which got that error message) in the first few steps of the setup.
All more general searches I do only bring up results for the recent firmware update that added support to the ze551ml (not the ze551kl). When I narrow the search enough to exclude that model from the results, I only get results for lists of articles or queries that have separate, unrelated posts for ze551kl and Android for Work.
It's too bad all manufacture's don't just include support for the Work Profile (i.e., the AT&T S4 I currently use issued as a work phone still doesn't support it).
So -- does anyone know the answer to this question? I'd really appreciate it.
Its got the ability to have different user profiles, but I'm not sure if that's what you're referring to. Is it an app or would it be in the settings menu somewhere?

It's a bit different than user profiles, but similar.
http://arstechnica.com/information-...r-work-dual-persona-support-comes-to-android/
It essentially creates a containerized section on the phone for Google Apps for Work. You end up with "two" hangouts, gmail, contacts, etc (which is nice, because it removes the account from switching account options in apps -- like when you share to Hangouts and it makes you select an account everytime if you have more than one). Instead of the work accounts device policy enabling it to see all apps installed on phone, have permissions to remote wipe, the Work Profile makes it so that the work account device policy can only see information in the Work Profile, and only has permissions to remote wipe the work profile.
I currently use Android for Work on my Moto X Pure 2014, and carry a separate s4 issued by work. I'd like to just put both of those sims into one phone, but I need something decent, that supports data on both sims (data connection active on both at same time not required), that also supports Android for Work.
Gotcha, I don't really see any Android for work options anywhere in mine, is there anything you had to download from the Play Store on your Moto X to get it working?

Unfortunately it's only something you can verify if you start setting up a Google apps account that can use it. Otherwise it doesn't show up anywhere.
I really appreciate you digging around for it though.

Ahh gotcha. If I hear something, I'll let you know. Might be worth a shot to email ASUS about it.

Unfortunately, we have an answer. Maybe there's hope they'll add support with the Android M update?

We can only hope. Really appreciate you taking the time to test it!
Still trying to figure out if all devices on Marshmallow (whether launched with it, or updated to it) include support for Work Profile. Seems like that's the case, but having a hard time finding a definitive answer.

That would be awesome if 6.0 supports Android for work natively, at this point it probably should.
