Metro Stuff Gone - Windows 8 General

Hi! I've got Windows 8 Pro via one of the hospitals here in Norway, and it almost works like a charm ... Some of my important tiles like the Desktop-tile and Windows Store-tile is gone. Even the Metro PC Settings is gone. When I try to open it via the Charms Bar, nothing happens. I've had a look in the Start-Menu folder under Programs, and the shortcuts are there. So I tried to find the Shortcuts in the Windows Folder, which I succeded with, but I can't copy them in there. I get a message who says that The Operation can't be done, because the file I was trying to replace is in use by another application. I've also tried to open the Shortcuts from the original folder, without success, except the PC Settings shortcut, which only opens the normal Control Panel. So it's kinda frustrating. I've made myself a shortcut to the desktop which I placed on the Metro Page, but I really want the store and settings to work. So, does anybody know how to replace those .lnk file, or have another fix that' not resetting/refreshing Windows (that would be my very last option, as I lose my settings)
Hope someone can give me some help

I'm assuming it's a work computer. If so, it's based on how the computer was set up by your IT department. I would contact whatever people within your organization are in charge, but they have probably set the computer up that way on purpose.

Actually, no, it isn't a work computer. I know a guy at the hospital who work with IT, and I knew he had earlier tried the previews, so when I was at RTM, I asked him which version he had, and then, he sendt the .iso file for both 32 & 64bit versions... So it is my private computer...

That's pretty strange then. Is this a fresh install, or have you been using it for a bit?

This may be a simple answer but its worth asking in case you didn't think of it. Have you just unpinned them from the start menu? ie if you can launch the start screen can you type desktop or store and they come up? If so you can right click and pin to desktop.

I upgraded from Win7, but I've only kept data. I've refreshed it one time. I've not unpinned the tiles, and they won't come up as an search result when I search for them

to be clear, when you searched for them you just tapped the win key to bring up the tiles then typed desktop?
you don't need to click or do anything other than win key and type

Yup! The only thing that comes up is my self-made shortcut for showing the desktop. Very strange, I think...

App Launcher

I have done some searching and cannot seem to find anything, please feel free to sarcastically point me in correct direction if i am wrong.
are there any favourite app launchers, e.g. a 1x1 program/widget than when clicked opened your 4, 8, 16 best apps (customizable) thus saving white space without having to scroll through all prorams to get to U etc?
Many thanks in anticipation

There are a few... I use Apps Organizer to arrange under manual icons and labels. Clicked once it opens a layer on the same screen with all the chosen app shortcuts in there. The most major limitation being that it cannot arrange widgets into such "folders".

You could just create a folder and drag app icons into it?
or you could just do that, sorry getting to grips with this phone still.
creating a folder works surprisingly well, many thanks

Another option
Another option is Ultimate Faves which lets you select favourite apps or contacts and scroll between the two.

Galaxy Tab problems with websites

Hi everyone,
I recently got a GT but I've been having some problems using the "search" functions on websites.
For instance, here on XDA, whenever I try to use the "search this thread" the following happens:
1) the input box for entering text appears then,
2) the keyboard pops up for a second then,
3) the input box disappears, so I can't enter anything. [frustrating!]
I have tried this on multiple browsers (Stock, xScope and Dolphin HD) and on different sites and the same problem regardless of if I use the Samsung or Swype keyboards.
I have no similar issues using these browsers on my HTC Glacier (MyTouch 4G) or Nexus One.
One thing I notice, is that whenever the keyboard pops up, there are "Prev." and "Next" tabs right above the keyboard. I am not sure if those "extra" tabs are accidentally causing the browsers to resize the pages thereby shutting down the input text box.
Any ideas?
Also, why does XDA always show up jumbled in portrait view?
Thanks!~

The Tab can't handle these types of windows where they are a window within a window.
However, there is an easy solution.....
What you must do is when you click on the 'Search this Forum' or 'Search this Thread' boxes you must then click on where it says 'Advanced'.
This will then open up a new window where you can then type in your search request.
Regarding Portrait not showing correctly ~ I have no issues with the xda-devs web site in Portait mode. It must be a setting you have.
Thanks. Maybe it is a setting I have in my user cp since that's all I can thunk it might be. I will try your.suggestion.

Anyone else have some thoughts on this issue?

I have the same problem with my Galaxy S, especially with 'xda 2010' theme and the drop down search boxes, i have tried a few different keyboards (Samsung, Gingerbread, Smart keyboard pro, HTC IME mod) the only one that works with the drop down boxes is HTC IME mod, you might want to give that a try. I have just done a quick search and i am not sure if it has been modded for the Tab?

If it works could you please leave me a vote of thanks..... but I stress, only if you feel it deserves it. The Thanks votes must only be used if someone has assisted or helped an individual in some form or another.
For each vote of thanks I receive my nurses are authorized to remove £10 from my wallet to go to charity.
What version of HTC ime mod are you using. I tried v.27 hi and keep getting fc. Do you have a link to the apk?
Thanks.
**budge nudge**
I use Firefox for Android and seems to work far better on sites that all the other mentioned browsers have problems with. Including this site. Firefox is still a beta but it works well enough for me on my Tab.

Remote wipe?

Any apps out there that can remote wipe, or at least remotely set a pattern lock on your phone?
Lookout can wipe your phone remotely as well as wave secure. Both of these require a subscription though. I'm not aware of a free one though.

but you have to set them up on your phone first. I can't do that right now, I just wanna wipe it.
I believe es security manager lets you remote lock without a subscription. You have to set a password and then send an sms to your phone with a special pattern that includes that password, iirc.

By the way if you already lost the phone, you won't be able to remote wipe it.

also
if you are running a rom like evil's desire HD rom and you sign up for HTC sense you can login to the web page https://www.htcsense.com/us/ and wipe the phone using that
but you have to have been running a rom that supports it like the above mentioned

Actually, there's a new app that can at least locate your device after it's already lost. I'll go digging for it, I read it in an article recently - gotta go find it. Essentially, since the new Market is available, you can download the app via the Web after your device is already lost. It will download to your phone and start giving you GPS coordinates. I'm not sure if it also offers a remote-wipe feature...I'll reply back if/when I find it!

HTC Desire HD Default Icons

Hi I have dhd but when installing apps then transfering them to the memory card, when having custom folders on the home screen restaring the device causes the icons to show as the standard default android icons. Is there anyway of making keep the original app ones?
Thanks
I have the same issue as well.

I have found a solution that although it works for me is perhaps not ideal.
If you change the 'skin' to something other than the one you are using, this seems to sort the problem. You can then change back to your original.
The only other thing I had to do was to then change the wallpaper back to what I wanted, but this does not make any difference to the solution.
Let me know if this works for you.

This issue is not that simple. Even if the phone is on for days, the icons don't change. Even selecting them to open the app makes no difference.
The only way I can resolve this issue is to do what I said in my previous post. I have also found that if HTC Sense has to force close and restart, then the correct app icons appear.

[Q] run apps on low resolution

HI, i used to run Windows 8 without any problems but after changing my monitor i cant use any if windows app. I tried changing some registry settings and it worked until restart also the the ratio wasn't maintained. My res right now is 1280 * 720, is there any way?
Sent from my HTC Desire S using Tapatalk
Usually for display connection and alignment... Never mess with any registry settings. That will take things down... Let us come to our point. After changing monitor you are not able to use web apps (windows store apps) or any desktop apps. What is the your new monitors resolution? And what is the display resolution mentioned inside your control panels display setting. ?

Store apps are not web apps in the slightest...
OP:
That is below the minimum requirement for windows 8.

Well yes, i know that but is their any way to run em? I can't go buying a new monitor just for that, the main reason i would state is skype, it won't run as installer but only from windows store. Their may be few more that i may need in future..

Well yes, i cant run any of the app, the installers run with no problems except few. Well i followed a guide for registry and i was able to get few extra settings but as said, they worked till i restarted my system and the icons were deformed or maybe stretched horizontally

Leaving aside the question of what ripoff con artist sold you a PC monitor with the resolution of my phone (and why you would use such a thing), you may be able to get it working by upgrading to Win8.1. They lowered the resolution requirements for Modern apps.
Also, pretty sure you can get the (desktop) Skype installer to work just fine on Win8. Try the .MSI file if the .EXE isn't working, or try setting Compatibility Mode for Win7.

you need to have at least 1024x768, the only metro app that can run with lower resolution is PC Settings
