S3 back panel cheap!!! - Galaxy S III General

MY galaxy s3 has got many scratches(blue). i use a back cover but still there are a lot of scratches... Samsung made s3 eco-friendly and because of this the back panel quality is very cheap and sensitive .. its so annoying...

And as such cheap to replace
-JOSH-

if u r going to use a back cover that is going to scratch your phone, how is Samsung responsible for it? I have 0 scratches

Mine has a fair few scratches too, but I'm usually busy looking at the big bright screen to care about it

I agree, mine has hair line scratches in addition to crack next to the speaker hole. I have ordered an original one from ebay in addition to a aluminium cover.

No scratches here. Still looks beautiful and shiny

I like the fact that it uses cheap plastic. Because then, I'm not paying extra for a phone just because of something pointless like a glass back or unibody design. Phones aren't a fashion statement, and so function trumps form.

ever heard of ebay? get a backcover for 10$ shipped, aluminium.

I think the S3 costs more to build than an iphone. Iphones are built in China using slave labour.
Anyway, an iphone back glass costs around $5 on eBay. The S3 back costs around $15 but it's the original one. Pretty good I say.

I'd rather an original one. Tried the aluminum one and reception and data speeds dropped pretty bad.

iPhones are indeed made in China but not by slave labors. The Workers who make iphones are decently paid for where they are living. Plus their food and shelter are all paid for. Oh, and no tax either. So in reality, the so called slaves probably got more left in their pocket than you. So dont spread flase information unless you have creditable source to back it up.

You obviously took my comment literally. I'm
to blame for that.
I was replying to a comment about Iphones costing more to make than the S3, which I'm pretty sure they are not. Many S3's are made in South Korea where labour costs are much higher than those in China. Apple, like most big companies chooses China because it's the cheapest and then they charge a mint for the phones.
Btw, there have also been alot of news reports about working conditions at Apples manufacturing plants (like Foxcon) over the last few years. Most has been negative (suicide rates, hard working conditions, hours). Maybe that has been false information as you say.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/may/30/foxconn-abuses-despite-apple-reforms
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Apple_Inc.
You asked for sources. Now I ask where is yours detailing the excellent conditions you talk about.
Anyway, maybe they are left with more in their pockets than you, but definitely not me.
And stop trolling, at least most of my post was related to the topic.

The aluminium back won't reduce signal.. in the slightest.. All radio's these days function in 360 degrees, the back will cover a limited portion of the back only (the edges are still plastic to stick), i use them and the signal is COMPLETELY unaffected in the slightest.
You can tell me anything, but i have the cover and see no change myself.
Only thing that will actually break is NFC.

I remember my brother bought one and was wondering why his reception had dropped over the last few days. Suggested it was probably the metal back cover. Anyway, we tested for about an hour....taking it off then back on again. Everytime we put it on reception dropped instantly. We tested until we were 100% sure it was the cover.
But there must obviously be different ones out there as you say you haven't had any problems, which I don't doubt.

Same here. I bought a case for protection but dirt got in between the case and the back cover and caused scratches. Oh, the bitter irony of it.

Mine is scratch-free. I use a Trident case, and a SGP screen protector for mine. Over a month & no marks.

days after I got my S3, this lady cuts in front of me at airport and basically, knocks phone out of my hand onto the metal bench causing a nice scratch before i had even bought a case!!
that link looks good sxi200, cheap way to make it look perfect again.

My Business partner just got a new S3 and the back panel is different to my one,
its thicker and more sturdy but also a little yellow in colour, not as ice white as mine.
You wouldn't really notice it until you hold the two side by side.
Maybe Sammy has had some complaints

Screen cracked!

So..I dropped my lovely new TMO sgs3 from about 10-12 inches onto a hard surface. The screen cracked in two places from the left to the right side. LCD is fine but glass is fully cracked. It seems that this is beyond unacceptable for "gorilla glass."
I called Tmobile customer service who were useless and suggested a pay $150 for an insurance replacement.
What should I do guys? Do I go to Samsung? The retailer (Walmart)?

How is it a defect, because you dropped your phone and the GLASS cracked? Bad luck? Yes. Defect? No. Even Gorilla Glass can crack. It is not invulnerable to damage resulting from drops. There is nobody to run to, as the damage is a result of your handling/mishandling of the device. There is nobody to foot that bill except for you. Sorry it happened, but that's just how it goes. Sometimes you can drop your phone and get lucky, and sometimes you drop it, and you aren't so lucky. It all depends on how it falls, and what it falls on.

He cant sell the phone because asurion will ask for the phone back. The only thing you can do is pay the deductible for a new phone. Even though its gorilla glass, once you drop it on that certain angle the screen will definitely crack.

If you used a credit card to purchase the phone and it provides warranty coverage you should check to see if accidental damage is covered. I know my card covers loss/damage for the 1st 90 days in addition to extending the normal warranty.
ETA: You can keep the phone and later see if you can purchase replacement glass. Sell it after fixing it.

He's right. It's common sense to know that the bigger the screen on the phone the more prone it will be to damage. Having a 4.8" screen is amazing but it also makes the phone very fragile. Gorilla Glass 2 to my understanding is basically there to protect the screen from light damage such as scratches/scuffs. Sadly you had a case of bad luck, dropped your phone, and the screen cracked.
There's nothing more to it than you need to be a little more careful next time with such an expensive device. Considering the phone outright sells for $600 I don't think $150 is that bad for a replacement. Good luck.
I agree with everybody on here and to be honest it was your fault. You should of gotten a case of some sort.
I hope you get your phone fixed/replaced.
it does seem this phone is more prone to screen damage than others before it to be honest.....I have personally seen my Samsung Fascinate and Charge take falls from several feet to concrete and spend all their time in a pocket with keys and get tossed around and never even suffered a scratch or crack.....and all that with no case or screen protector either.....

Is it misusage or just typical Samsung quality?

Hey guys,
2 weeks ago I bought a brand new galaxy note 2, but by now I already have some scratches on the back cover and some on the steel cornering? So is it just misusage or is it that Samsung have easily scratched covers? And I only dropped the phone like once so I don't think that all of these scratches came from misusage... Any ideas?
I had a sgs2 before and it got totally destructed by scratches and tearings...
Are you carrying diamond tipped nails in your pocket?
I have had my note 1 for 9 months and have dropped it a couple of times on concrete and ceramic tiled floors and it still looks 99% brand new. I don't usually put anything else with it in my pockets but it has come in contact with keys on several occasions.
Do you live in a sandy area? How do you carry it normally on your person?
Now that you mention it, I have a nasty scratch on my back cover too.
Never had a problem with my Note 1. I wonder if it is the glossy coating.
I'm using a case now though - much nicer to hold with a textured back.

Well I think if samsung uses steel or aluminum cases like nokia our phone would feel and look better and will still remain in excellent condition even after couple of drops.. But unfortunately samsung uses glossy plastic which might not break as easily but will definitly not remain a "new phone" definition after a month or two...

Give it a rest officer, if the gn2 has a back thats like the gs3 then yes its flimsy. samsung is notorious for cutting corners likr this to save money.
But with that said its usualy to provide better quality in other aspects.

And display don't have it any more that background black spots. (which is available on any amoled screens)
Very happy.
People complain about plastic being a poor build quality choice. It's just a matter of opinion. I don't feel that it has to be metal/aluminum/whatever to be nice build quality. If anything, I feel plastic is more durable, lighter, and we get awesome internals. People don't complain about the mass amount of plastic BMW uses everywhere in their cars, but people also don't know enough to realize it.

Exactly. People also don't know that the cover of a lot of phones are also actually plastic, just with a different coating to make it feel "premium". I could care less if its plastic and flimsy, there's a reason for it being that way. Its more durable.

next time get a flipcover i dont know if it protects screen when dropping or some kind of front protection. thats what i'd do.
I feel for you mate. Really do. Same happened with my galaxy s3, that made me move to the note 2.
I found a guy, who repaired the broken glass (i bought a new front glass, he peeled off the old broken one and replaced it with the new) and the phone looked OK, and worked fine, but it had touchscreen issues, missed inputs and it never was the same again. Apple only replace for no cost if it's a manufacturing fault not an accident.
If it's an accident then yes they do replace but is with a refurbished phone.
Or if you pay a fee they replace but again with a refurbished one

This would happen with any phone. You dropped it on the corner and thats the weakest point due to it being the smallest are to spread the impact. Gorilla glass is scratch proof, not .... well ... this proof. Anyway try ringing Samsung and ask if there are any repair centres in your area. They can normally do it with-in a few days ( my Galaxy Nexus was done over night) just depends how fast they can get a screen.
I do feel for you :/

FYI. I got an ipad 2 replaced because of a dent which affected the volume button. I dropped it. The ipad 2 was free and I didn't have a receipt because of that. A Day or two after visiting the Apple store, I received a new one.
My brother also had his smashed iPhone replaced at no charge.
Now, depending on who you get at the genius bar, they may talk you into getting the Apple care plan before replacing your device. Sometimes they don't.
Apple covers accidental damage (twice) with their plus plan, which is$100, and it looks like now they charge $50 service fee. Well worth it for 2 years of assurance.

I have the official bumper on my N4 and it's quite nice. Buttons are nice and clicky and ports are all easily accessible. It's just a piece of rubber(?) with silver-colored plastic around the border, I think, but it's very attractive in design and fits the phone perfectly. Just be careful when you're putting it on if your N4 has front and back screen protectors. It has a habit of lifting the corners of my screen protector if I'm not paying attention while putting it on. It's a very minimalist case, obviously, but it's just thick enough to keep the screen/camera lens from touching anything, should you rest the phone on a flat surface.
I haven't dropped my phone to know whether it will keep it safe or not, but it's probably on part with any other slim/minimalist case.
It's more like £22 after you include postage.
I wouldn't mind so much but I didn't like the bumper at all. It made the phone too big and uncomfortable to hold.

If you want a bumper like the nexus 4 one you can buy this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shenit-Bump...SY0K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1359591734&sr=8-1
Its cheaper and its an exact replica it also has free shipping.
I personally didn't like the bumper. It's a very nice looking bumper but I hated the bulky feel of it. If it was much slimer it would have been my favorite case.

Definitely agree with you. It feels much wider than it really is. I kept it on for barely 10 minutes before switching to a nillkin snap cover. Feels way better.

wow, I can't believe the bumper actually makes it big enough to bother some people.... I thought the whole idea of the bumper was to keep the size close to it, bare. (I'm still waiting for my N4 and Poetic bumper to be delivered)

I've some bad news for you about the poetic bumper. It will come apart at the seems within a month. The glue between the rubber and the plastic began to separate after a week of handling. After 3 it was completely loose 90 percent of the way around. That's what you get for saving a little money.

They revised their design and apparently the newer ones are better. If yours splits they'll send you a new one.
I have the original design with no problems at all.

You get a free replacement. Jesus.. people making a big deal out of nothing.
They send u free replacement, no questions asked. The company is at a loss replacing bumpers. Give them some respect for at least trying to make it right by having good customer support.
IMO, nothing special
I ordered one of the bumper cases and got it way back in December, and personally I didn't think it was anything special (in fact, I vastly preferred the feel of the phone without it, as the bumper rises slightly above the edge of the screen so you can no longer feel the angled glass around the sides of the phone).
So I auctioned it on eBay and someone bought it for just over £50, so I can't exactly complain

The thing is.. if your replacement has the same fault, what good is it, really?
Jeez, guess in the only one who really enjoys the bumper

Wow! Do you not know how to read? It was stated that the new ones are improved/revised. It's a simple adhesive issue, I emailed the seller and he replied that all the units being shipped are the new ones without any issues
You're acting as if a bad transmission was designed for a new car and there are already thousands and thousands sold. It's not rocket science to fix the adhesive issue.
And for me, it's not about saving "a few dollars", I'd prefer the Google one accept I recently moved to Canada and my American credit cards don't work with buying anything at the Canadian Play Store (other than apps). My gf ordered the N4 for me as my birthday gift. As it's already a very pricey gift, I didn't want her spending any more so I told her not to buy the bumper.

the bumper doesn't make the phone much thicker. That isn't the issue. The issue is how wide the phone feels with the bumper on. It definitely is not a slim bumper in comparison to poetic's.
That's why it's called a bumper, bumper is for bumping meaning protection on impact. The thicker the better the protection, the slimmer the lesser of protection, simple like that, so stop whining and complaining if you do not understand the meaning of the words. Plus people with bigger hands will feel it comfortable and ppl with small hands most probably wouldn't like it, but that's all personal, as far as quality is concern that's the best offer on the market today regarding BUMPERS.

There's a post in the other thread that the so called "solution" did not always fix the problem, and frankly I find it hard to believe it's just about the glue. There's just not enough contact area between the rubber and the hard plastic. It's a design issue.
As for the free replacement. it's still annoying having to get one in the first place. Don't they test drive their own products?

Exactly like you said, everyone has different opinion upon the thickness of the bumper. We are all just chipping in our own views.

Asus Premium cover smells fishy...

The cover for my LTE arrived today. Asus branded, described as 'premium'. The screen cover is divided into 3 parts and the end one, presumably to create higher friction to attempt to hold it on to the screen, is covered in a slightly gloss plastic stuff of some sort. The problem being that it smells of fish. I can see why O2 are sending these covers, with their silly retail price, out free...

They are not premium, by any definition. I like that it is thin and light, but the stand functionality is useless (it will stand for a few minutes and then fall over). And, yes, the strip smells like fish.

I thought I must have developed a personal hygiene issue before I identified where the smell was coming from!. In case it was some manufacturing residue, I tried cleaning the plastic bit with that orange sticky stuff remover. But it has made no difference: maybe it will fade in time. After all it will be sitting in a drawer, replaced by my cheapo S-line TPU case...
That's nasty...
Btw this should be in the n7 accessories fourm and not in general.

got mine through the post yesterday free from my O2 order.
Definitely wouldnt consider it a "premium" case, I like that its thin/light but having the front cover flap open if the tablet is held upside down is a deal breaker for me. id be worried the case as it would probably end up with something in my bag getting trapped between the screen and the case.
Also, mine doesnt seem to have a magnet for the auto sleep? are all units lacking this feature or have I got a dud?

I don't think any of them do. (sigh)

Cheap pleather stinks. Let it air out, it will eventually get better.

seems like such a basic feature to leave out of a "premium" case
Premium fish sauce?
I thought the thread title was trying to be funny, I didn't know it actually smells like fish.
I read this thread the other day and I had a dream about it last night.
Thanks OP!
