I have neither device... but if I understand right, you have to have the device's NFC chips right near each other to do this. If this is true, did you do that? (The N7's NFC chip is around the X in Nexus if I heard right).

I haven't gotten mine to work, I'm not sure if its my tablet or phone but I tried it with my phone recently to my moms galaxy nexus and it worked. I know there's sweet spot on the tablet but I've tried everywhere and I can't get it so idk.

I have the galaxy Nexus with rooted jelly bean and Nexus 7 with stock jelly bean. NFC works flawlessly. Are you tapping it right? The NFC chip is on the battery of the galaxy Nexus, do you have any third party battery that might not have NFC? If you don't, tap where the battery is onto the top back portion of the Nexus 7.

The NFC on the Gnex is on the battery and on the N7 it's around the "X" in "Nexus" on the back. Place them together in these spots and it should work.

I have two Nexus 7 (one 8gb) and one Nexus Galaxy.
All are stock ROMs as of this posting.
The N7s NFC work between each other flawlessly and effortlessly. No fudging around looking for the NFC.
Neither N7 can do an NFC exchange with the Nexus Galaxy.
Both N7s take a significant amount of futzing around to get the initial NFC buzz and tone. Neither will actually start an NFC transfer to the NG.
Inverse is true.

transfer of files using beam is new to jelly bean. It works fine using a galaxy nexus and a nexus 7 both running jelly bean (I've transferred photos without issue) using Bluetooth and SNEP.

I have both the Gnex and the N7. I was able to transfer a picture from my phone to the tablet using NFC.

from my galaxy s3 to the n7 i get:
NEW TAG COLLECTED- text/directshareerror
from n7 to gs3 more luck. IF the app is not on the phone it sends me to play store, but for photos it keeps saying the gs3 wont accept large files... ITs pretty hit or miss... more miss then hit

good advice

I also own a Galaxy Nexus and a Nexus 7. Like you had said i held my galaxy up to the X on the back of my nexus and it worked. It seems a little touchy, i have to try it a couple time before the "touch to beam" screen comes on. Does anyone know what things Beam is compatible with, ive only been able to beam webpages and google play app pages so far.

Works fine between my Galaxy Nexus and N7. My GNex is on JRO03O , the N7 is stock rooted.
As others have said make sure you put the battery of the phone up to the "Nexus" on the back of the tab it will say touch to beam when you're in the right spot.

When you first unwrap your tablet, there is a rectangle box where they lable NFC behind the tablet, tap that spot, and I do have both devices.
Beamed from my Grouper

Well i cant use mine. I have the nexus 7 and a gs3.
They find each other, the transfer bar shows up on the galaxy but nothing more. The transfer never really starts and after a while it shows transfer fail.

Do you regret buying a N7 due to not using it enough?

Hello,
So, topic pretty much says it all.
I would like to buy a Nexus 7, but because I always carry my smartphone with me and it pretty much does everything I need it to, I am afraid of spending the money and not using it enough to justify the cost.
So, what's your case? For what do you use your tablet?
Do you regret buying it?
Cheers

I use it pretty much constantly, its almost as portable as my phone and much more ole sent to use due to the better screen and battery life. I think it is a good investment

As a student it's nice having this battery life without having to haul my laptop around.
Sent from my paranoid Nexus 7.
I have always preferred using my phones over my laptop....since I bought the N7 not only have I not even glanced at my laptop I haven't been using my phones that much either...which has been great for their battery life I use the N7 for pretty much everything....paying bills, browsing, texting, etc...which are all the things I did on the phones. If I didn't need the laptop for Odin or kies, I would sell it.

I've carried an iPad with me constantly for the last couple of years, so I knew exactly how I would use my N7. At work for note-taking in meetings, checking email when away from my desk, logging on to my Citrix desktop, listening to music or watching a video when work gets boring In personal time, I watch videos and play music, check email, read (books, magazines), browse the net and play games.
It's never far from my side and gets plenty of use! Justifying the $300 price tag vs. $500-600 for an iPad (I paid more than that for my iPad 1 a couple of years back) is a no-brainer for me.
Don't regret it one bit. My PC is getting far less use at home now (good considering I spend 8 hours a day in front of one at work) and my has been relegated to phone duties.
I don't regret it at all. I use my tablet pretty much every day for most of the day. Like many others have said, I rarely use my laptop for anything anymore unless I have a ton of typing to do.
Not one bit! I haven't been able to put it down since the day I brought it. Sold my laptop and my desktop gets used less and less. I've also been using my Evo LTE as just a phone now lol. Excellent purchase in my book. Trust me you won't be disappointed. If you ever find yourself not using it, you can easily sell it and recoup some of your money.

The thing is I previously had an HTC Sensation as a phone and an HTC flyer as a tablet.
Was using almost always the sensation because the flyer always stayed at home.
Ended up selling both and got a galaxy note to try and have the best of both worlds.
Granted the nexus 7 is a different beast from the flyer, but I fear the same might happen...
Thinking about selling the note and pick a nexus as a smaller phone and a nexus 7.
I am afraid to end up feeling the nexus is too small and the nexus 7 too big to carry around.

I have the GNote and GNex and after using the GNote everything seems small, but the GNex feels like a toy after I've been using the GNote all week. I wish the GNex was a little bigger....even my sgs2 looks bigger next to the GNex, even though it's only 4.5.Hoping they make the next nexus at least 4.8....although "leaks" of specs are rumored to be the same size as the GNex.
Since I got my nexus 7 I don't think I've put it down unless its for charge wile I sleep. Rarely use my xperia s unless I'm out and about. Ive never used my laptop much before anyway. Unless it was for uni. I carry my nexus all over the house. Whether its for readings books, browsing tapatalk or just generally browsing. When I hold my xperia after the n7 it feels so small lol.

Mine has replaced my phone for everything but calling, texting and navigation. Gaming, web, reading ebooks and comics...all more comfortable on the N7.
I'm actually thinking of selling/trading my GNote and getting a Nexus.
I can do everything I did with the SPen just as easily on my N7 with a standard stylus too and my storage needs are happily met with my external drive.
Love the Note but it's usefulness as a phablet isn't there for me anymore.

It all depends on what your current phone is, If it's a SGSIII or other high end device then the Nexus 7 isn't much of a improvement other then having a bigger screen.
I actually still use my SGSIII more then the Nexus 7 as I can do everything and more (like being able to pocket it) on the phone while the Nexus 7 is now just a coffee table family tablet. Games are kind of nice but some of them are very hard to control due to placement of virtual joypads.
I guess I'll either give away the Nexus 7 or figure some other use for it.

There is no comparing a sgs3 to a pure Google tablet. Just no comparison.
Even my GNote at 5.3 is isn't useable as a tablet. Don't know why you think the N7 isn't much of an improvement over a 4.87 ics, touchwiz PHONE.

[SOLVED] How did they do that?

So, I think it was at some Google show featuring Jelly Bean where they took a JB phone and touched screens with a JB tablet and it transferred data between them. I have a Galaxy Nexus and the N7 and tried making them kiss so much they requested a private room, but I can't figure out how to do that data share between them.
Anyone know what I'm talking about and how to do it?

I had the same problem trying to get the NFC chips to line up or something. I ended up flipping my gnex upside down when they were back to back before I could beam something over.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
It's my understanding that it only works with Google apps right now. To get it working make sure both NFC and Android Beam are turned on. After that open up something like the stock gallery or chrome, put both devices back to back and then tap the screen of the phone sending the data. I've never really been able to get it to work with my N7, but it works really well with my Galaxy S III and my brother's S II.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I believe you are talking about NFC? make sure you have it enabled. it is in settings, under wireless&networks, tap "more" and you can enable NFC.
Line up the Gnex battery to the "Nexus" on the back of the tablet in any app like browser, gallery, contacts, etc and it should say touch to beam when they are in range. Worked fine between both my Nexus(I run mwalts stock rooted roms)and S3 with the 7.

Sweet, it worked! I had to move the phone around on the back of the N7. Eventually it made a noise and I was able to beam.

Nexus 7 vs 5'' phone

Hello
So the situation is that I have a 10 inch tablet now and a 4.7 phone. I find the tablet too big for carrying it around and other stuff except movies..
Planning to upgrade my phone to a 5 inch one soon and idk I'd its worth it to get the nexus 7 if I have a 5 inch phone since they are almost similar in size
Is it worth it?

Hi, I currently have the original galaxy note and the n7. I have to say that the difference in size doesn't seem a lot on paper but when you're using it you will benefit so much from having the extra space on the n7. They have similar resolutions but the n7 is so much nicer for web browsing, watching videos etc. Such a shame because I hardly pick up my phone these days unless I want to...well make a call or text...

I too have an original Galaxy Note and my Nexus 7, and the experience is perfect. I can still take both devices everywhere, and things like reading and general browsing in the N7 is far easier than the note. The other benefit is that my Note gets to save its already incredible battery life for actual phone use and such while I use the Nexus.

I hardly use my phone (Arc S) since I got my N7 I now find it hard to type on the keyboard since using the N7. My Arc S is now used as a phone & texting device and for data when out & for facebook & Google + when I'm in bed and can't sleep and don't wanna disturb the wife. I'd get the N7 and a pocket sized phone, especially one that has WiFi hotspot feature so you've then got a phone for calls and texts and the N7 for everything else.

I keep my Nexus 7 in my jacket pocket, excellent portable tablet.
I'll still be upgrading my phone to a 5" when my upgrade is due.
I find that I use both devices for very different purposes now.
The phone is just a phone - the Nexus 7 does everything else
Same here my 5" player doesn't get much use since getting the N7. And I have a 4.7" phone that only gets used as phone, txt messages and GPS when I'm not on WiFi.
I like that I can hold the N7 in one hand since I usually stay in portrait mode and that the N7 will fit in a back pocket.

Depends what your trying to send. I tried sending a picture using beam from my note 2 to my nexus 4 and it didn't work, it did using drop box. I'm assuming it had to do with the two gallery apps not being the same.

No it isn't. The Gallery app doesn't have anything to do with it.
When you share a picture over beam on a stock Jelly Bean device the receiving device understands that the content to be transferred is a picture and opens a Bluetooth serial connection to the sending device. The file is then transferred over Bluetooth.
Samsung has enhanced this process starting with the S3 (S-Beam) to use Wifi-Direct for much faster transfers. However they invented their own way of doing things (as they often do). Google stated they have plans to migrate to Wifi Direct as well in a later release once the standards flush out (it didn't make it into 4.1 though and doesn't appear to have made it in to 4.2).
The issue from the Note 2 to the N4 is likely a mismatch in that the Note 2 is going to try to use S-Beam (which doesn't work with non Samsung Touchwiz devices) and the N4 is still looking to leverage Bluetooth tunneling.
Going the other way (N4 - Note 2) should work assuming it's running Jelly Bean.
that guy right there^^^^ Nailed it!

Tap & pay will only show up after NFC is enabled (Kit Kat only, NOT Jelly Bean for you n00bs out there).

The secure NFC chip isn't needed for tap and pay starting with KitKat. That's why they added it at the OS level.
Tap and Pay is indeed present on the 2013 Nexus 7. I just enabled NFC to confirm that the menu shows up in Settings and it does.
Tap and Pay is present that's correct but Wallet isn't there yet. More talk about it here
