Music Player showing multiple copies of files - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

I have 2 problems related to the music player, and I think they're both related to each other.
The first one, is that when I look at the list or scroll through the songs that I have saved in my phone ( external SD ), many ( or maybe even all ) of them show up with 4 copies with each. How did this happen? and how do I fix this?
The other problem is that, when I play songs from the "songs" tab, it always says "cannot play this format" , and then moves along until it finds something that it can.
Any ideas on how I can fix these problems?

If you have a pc, take out the sd card and put it in the pc, in windows explorer make sure you can view system files, after that have a look in your sd where your music is and you will see lots of index files, delete them and that should fix your problem, after you plug the sd back your phone will generate new index files. there maybe an app that could remedy that but this is how I fixed it when I had the same problem.

I have the multiple song problem. Easy to solve- clear the data under settings/ applications/ media storage. it'll force the media libray to be re-written.
I have no idea why this occurs.

Did this and it deleted the entire music library including playlist, gallery and other medias but I'm pretty sure that the pics, videos and other media are still intact via SD. Android probably can't see it so beware doing this. Backup media storage first and restore if you have problems
EDIT:
It's all good, just waited a few moments and the galley and the entire playlist went back

U can install 'SD maid' and check for duplicates file in ur SD card
And use 'power amp' best music player play all types of music files

I had exactly the same issue in my note running miui. Un mounting and mounting the card solved the problem

Out of interest...
Anyone know why this occurs?
Also, it only happended to me once i upgrded to ICS, never of GB.

Thanks for the replies guys. All I did was clear the data from 'Media Storage", and restarted the phone so that it'll recheck the SD card again.

How do you do this from the phone? this seems to be a shorter step, since it probably wont require a reboot

It happens because you have moved the media file. The original file index location table has not been updated by touch wiz(Music player) but the new location of same files has been appended to the file index table.
For phone, the previous located file also exists. But when you try to play that file it says "Cannot play media, unsupported file format" .
The more number of times you move each file, the more no. of copies you have.
Example: You move your files 4 times. " Redemption Song"
You'll have 4 copies of the same track " Redemption Song"
When you try to play the 1st,2nd or the 3rd track of "redemption song", it'll say unsupported file format.
But when you'll play the 4th entry, it'll play.
The problem is the index file. Delete is. Let it create another file after every time you move your song files.

mediascape not playing some files

I recently noticed that some mp3 files dont play in mediascape. The error message goes "Could not play the file. File can be deleted." Any ideas on why it does it to only some files? I made sure they dont have any weird symbols in them.
Maybe you moved them or renamed it?

First question: Do they play in other players on the phone?
Section question: Have you deleted them and re-copied them to the phone? It's possible that the files were corrupted during copy, or if the phone wasn't ejected properly from your computer.
No these are files i just copied them fresh into the phone... its weird because some of them seem to be working and a select few are not... I did not rename them either.
I did try downloading a few players from the market place and none of them played the songs that werent being played in mediascape. They did play fine in my palm pre though... any thoughts?
Hmm.. just delete them and recopy. Sounds like corrupted data. If that doesn't work, use a program on your PC to change the bitrate or file type (mp3 to aac).
hey
dont delete anything.
i used to have a problem by playing all media files only for 30 seconds. i tried everything, i used a lot of media apps, restart 10 times my fone.
eventually i decided to pull out my memory card and inserted it back. problem sovled.
try to remove your memory card and slide it back in. should be working fine.
let me know if that solved the issue

Downloaded SDRescan.. deleted all videos and messed up gallery app :(

So like i said in the title, i used the app SDRescan to force my phone to rescan media because i found that the gallery app was not automatically refreshing when i added new media to the phone.
I ran the app and a couple minutes later it finishes. Turns out it deleted ALL the phones videos (luckily no pictures). But the problem im having now is that the gallery app is not detecting any media on my phone. There are still pictures, and i readded a lot of my videos back, but the app is showing no media on the phone
I force closed the app, cleared it's data etc. I even formated my sd and put the files back on. Still it shows i have no media.
I thought about taking a new picture with the camera to see what would happen then, and guess what, now it shows i have 1 picture in the gallery. Is there a way i can get the gallery to see the other 1000 pictures i have taken? And all my videos?
edit: i downloaded the stock android gallery app but its the same in that app too. So it's not just HTC's app. Somehow android isnt recognizing my old media.
anybody? this is really killing me.
edit: did a factory reset and the problem persists What's have i done!
hmmmm this is an interesting one. ive had this before but i couldnt remember how i fixed it ...
what ROM are you using, or are you stock ?
SDRescan did nothing to your phone. Your are having problems with the stock Android Media Scanner in your phone. SDRescan does nothing else but notifies the Media Scanner to do it's job on demand, instead of on-boot or SD card mount. That's all it does.
So in short you are having problems with Android Media Scanner, try to look around in this area. I seen few reports on internet when media scanner deleted some files.

I figured the problem lies with the media scanner so I went into Settings > Manage Applications > Media Storage > clear data... but nothing changes.

Isn't this your problem ?
I did have a .nomedia folder on my phone with some videos in and those were deleted. But also the videos in my DCIM folder were deleted. However im over that, my problem is that media scanner isnt picking any media.
I thought i would try another microsd card i had in my sister's mp3 player, and believe it or not android picked up the media. So somehow i think this SDRescan app damaged my sc card..
No, it didn't. Media Scanner has separate databases for each and every SD card. So it's the database for your old SD card which doesn't work, when you put in a new card a new indexing database was created for the ID of your new SD card.
This has happened to me a few times, all i do is find the file using "ES File Explorer" then select to open it with the default video player and it gets added to my library of videos
It's easy to do for a couple of vids, but not really practical if you've got like 10+

i see. but this index, is it not stored on the phone memory? because a factory reset still hasn't solved the problem. I also formatted the sd card, so shouldn't the phone recognize it as a new memory card then?

It should. You don't have by any chance .nomedia file in root folder of the SD card, right ?

I do. I'll try delete it and see if that helps
Edit: nope
You deleted it and what did you do next ? Did you started SDRescan or rebooted your phone ? Until the Media Scanner kicks in, there won't be any change.
The point is :
1) if you had a folder with data and then added the .nomedia file to it, then unfortunately thanks to the inner workings of the media scanner the file gets deleted instead of only removing the reference from database
2) the card will get indexed again only at boot, SD card insertion or when you execute apps like SDRescan which start the Media scanner manually.
yes! it works now!! thanks for all your help faugusztin!!
after i deleted the the .nomedia folder i did a restart and the problem persisted, but now (like two hours later) i just thought i would go and check the gallery app again and low and behold all my media appeared. Maybe the media scanner didnt finish or something idk. But im happy now
But i was under the impression that the .nomedia trick only blocks media from within that folder? Why was it blocking all my media?
Anyway thanks for all your help mate. really appreciated.
It does index, but it takes time.
It block media from that folder - and all subfolders. It is a sign which says "nothing to see there" - that includes the subfolders of that folder too. Since you had the file in root folder of the card, it didn't indexed anything.
I was too late...glad you got it sorted supreme.

Where do I put music & video files?

Sorry but a really noob question ..........
Where do I put music and video's so that the default app's find them?
I thought the SD card was 'external_SD' so that's where I put the music folders. But then, when I try to navigate to that on the phone, there's nothing in there. And also, when I open the music app' it doesn't show anything that I've added!!
So can you tell me where you put audio and video files please.
Sorry, I really show know this but it's not something I've done on any of my phones before!
Thanks in advance for you help.
SDCard : Internal Storage ,the 16Gb build in
External SD : The micro SD (T-Flash) you insert into phone
And inside Windows Explorer ,it should be two drives ,say ,Drive E and Drive F ,one is internal ,one is external
Hope this help
I think memory your looking at is the built in memory. I put some video files in the folder marked media and it found them ok. If you want to find the external memory you need to go to settings, wireless and network then usb utilities to connect tovpc. Thenn i just put all my music on there. Again it found them ok.

Right, I've done the music files. I've dumped them in the 'Music' folder in the above screenshot and it appears to have found them. The only annoying thing is that it's sorted each song alphabetically and not by track number!
Now I just need to work out where to put videos.
I also still can't see, from my screenshot of the folder structure above, where my SD card is. If it is that 'external_SD' then why aren't files showing when I explore it on the phone?
And does the Note not play .mov files? I've transferred some across but when trying to open them it states, "No applications can perform this action".

[Q] Deleted 6gb video, didnt free up memory

I deleted a video via mx player, didnt free up any memory, been searching the tablet to find where its living now. is there a trash folder somewhere that needs clearing? or will it delete as soon as its needed? i have 3 gb left and i should have 9 or 10. any advise?
You can download an app called DiskUsage. It breaks down where data is being stored on your device. You should be able to locate where the memory is being held up.

Thanks! as soon as i ran the app, it discovered that the video has been deleted and started to indicate that I have 9.8gb free.
Sometimes when you delete files using the MX Player delete... the disk space doesn't show up until a reboot... or use app manager to kill the settings app so it has to refresh all its values... I delete videos sometimes but they still show in my gallery until I reboot ... but they are just thumbnails and they won't play

The WALKMAN app and music syncing

Hey xda!
After days of trying to get a decent solution out of the Sony support guys, I gave up and turned to the only place I know I'll probably find my anwser!
So here's the scenario: I've recently purchased a Z2 (yesterday) and immediately started syncing my music up with the provided application which is Media Go. The unfortunate thing is, that my music refuses to show up in the WALKMAN app. I've looked up some probable solutions on the web such as clearing the data and cache of the WALKMAN app, restarting the phone several times, doing a factory reset, but I ran into a dead end every time. I've also heard that the WALKMAN app cannot recognize music which are in the external storage, but that's not the case here since I dont have an SD card inserted at the moment. I've also read that the app cannot recognize music without proper ID3 tags, but I don't think thats the case here since every music player, even Media Go, can recognize every single mp3 I have on my PC.
Anyone else Xperienced (pun intended) this problem and found a solution?
Thanks in advance!
-Khemist
First thing: The Z2 does recognizes Music in the external storage. From Kitkat and beyond, that's almost the exclusive use for it, without root.
Second: does other players recognizes songs? Download one of the most used, are your choice, and see if they find it.
Third: Seems obvious, but everyone forgers, sometimes, the most obvious stuff. Use a file manager, on the phone (there should be one called File Commander built in), and check the Music folder to see if your media files are there.
Forth: Use the file manager in Windows, and transfer a few music files to the Music folder. Reboot the phone, wait a few minutes (just to make sure), and check if the music is now on Walkman...

The good thing about android is that you can just copy and paste the files onto your phone storage without using a syncing app.
Have you tried copying one of the music files onto your storage straight away into a new folder you create? (the name of the folder doesn't matter at all)
In addition, check the folder with your music files. (The one music go created) Chances are...there is a file in it called '.nomedia'. It's usually a hidden file, so make sure you select 'show hidden files' when you use a file management app. (I recommend Es file Explorer. You can find it on google play store, but others are fine too as long as you get to see hidden files) The file is there to stop media files in the folder from being recognised.
P.S the phone does recognise media files on external storage. That's the whole point of having one really.

Hey! Thanks for the extremely fast response!
First, the music is located in the internal storage. It's in the root/Music folder. The structure looks like /Music/ARTIST/ALBUM/SONGS
Tried what you suggested and strangely , none of the downloaded music players recognize any kind of music on my phone!
Also tried manually copying files (by following the "/Music/ARTIST/ALBUM/SONGS" and by simply copying individual files into the /Music/ folder) but still refuses to recognize my music.
Have you tried creating a NEW folder and put some music files into it?

The other guy pointed some important information. Kudos to him
Try using a more powerful file explorer (the recommended ES File Explorer is a good one. You can try Solid Explorer too, if you like it better) and do a search on the whole storage (remember to activate the Show Hidden files/folders) for .nomedia files.
PS: That isn't the root of the storage, in theory. From a user standpoint, it is, but technically there are a few other folders before you reach the actual root.
Again, don't forget to thank the other guy. I kinda just repeated what he said, but in another way. From the time O am writing this, I haven't saw a reply from you to him...

Wooah wait there...Z2 has always been reading the music from SD card how can you say that it doesnot...?
I dont think the native music player has any problem reading it from the SD card...even though KK 4.4 has restrictions
Also throw the music file anywhere in the phone either internal or external inside any folder it recognises automatically unless the database is corrupt...

My Z2 sees all the music, I have the MUSIC folder created on my SD Card.
The only explorer which can do it is File Commander.
Jumping in on this thread....
I use to play my music unlimited through the Walkman, but all of a sudden it seems to have stopped doing so when I try to log back in it doesn't allow me to do so, I click on music unlimited within the Walkman it loads up the screen to login but neither the "login" button or "create account" button will do anything if I click on them they make the tap sound which is registering that they are being clicked but nothing else, the other two links on the page will open ( Learn more and Terms and conditions )
I've tried removing both apps, clearing all the data and reloading everything back on but it's still the same, anyone got any ideas.
Walkman plays my 70gb library on my sdcard1 just fine...
I use Google play music and Walkman does not see my music.

Oh yeah, that's cause Google play music downloads your music to the device and stores it in some cryptic way. I forgot about that.
But, if you put your music on your phone yourself via pc, EVERY music player will be able to see it.

Google music sucks. It will only let you download the music and it's stored in some secret way. I use amazon mp3 at least you can actually put the files on your added card. Shame on Google.
