Update to 8773 Tango? - Venue Pro General

Any chance the DVP will see an update for those of us with unlocked ones?
Microsoft is starting to push it out to the masses, so just wondering.

I doubt it.

No one knows. Hopefully we'll get the cabs soon so we can manually push it with cabsender.

Did they just say today that all 1st and 1.5 gen phones will get 7.8?? Guess time to update to 8107 to prepare!

What I've heard is that once you have the 7.8 OS on there, all future updates will be delivered OTA, bypassing the carrier entirely. (I guess that means you'll have to be connected to wifi.)
Once WP8 is ready, that'll be about the time that they release WP7.8. The carrier will still have to greenlight 7.10.8107, 7.10.8773, and (whatever 7.8 is) before Zune will allow you to update.
So hopefully all the handset makers will care enough about their long-dead product lines to update to 7.8 to take the carriers out of the Windows Phone update equation.
Personally I'm going to wait on the 8107 update for the DVP until T-Mobile greenlights it.

Well if your DVP is factory unlocked, you'll probably get any updates made available. I had a factory unlocked version and no issues upgrading all the way to 8107. Not so fortunate with my TMO unlocked version though. Had to force the update as I don't have much faith in waiting for TMO after phone has reached EOL with them... and Dell too. Anyways, last I read about 7.8 is that it won't go through carriers but who really knows...
Also in Canada BTW :highfive:

I think they're always going to TALK to the carriers about the updates, if for no other reason than to make sure their preloaded apps will run as expected, but I think from 7.8 and on the update schedule will be primarily dictated by when each manufacturer's hardware guys finish testing.
The 7.8 update is going to be delivered in exactly the same way as all previous updates, but after that all future updates will be delivered over wifi, and irrespective which carrier you're on. I kind of feel like 7.8 will be the last update for Windows CE handsets, but at least they're leaving it open

I contacted Dell Care about this, and according to their reply they are unsure whether we will receive any of these updates including Windows Tango Refresh 7.5 or 7.8
=/

Please can you send me the step by step instructions so I can force the update on my venue pro too!

All the info you need should be in this thread.

upgrading to TANGO with Zune...
DVP 16 GB No-Brand Italy
Updated done! no problem...
tethering NOT present, I hoped because with Tango it is introduced in Nokia Lumia 800...

And for peeps like me without a non-branded DVP, here's for sending them cabs to force update to Tango:

No update for me yet and I have an unbranded AT&T compatible version.

To be clear, when we say "unbranded" are we talking about a phone without a logo on it? Or a phone that doesn't come with the AT&T apps that install at the last stage of setup? I don't think any of the DVPs had a logo on them, and to my understanding, if the phone was ever locked to a carrier, you have to abide by that carrier's update schedule (*excluding hacks of course.)
Is that wrong?

Yeah no AT&T apps, not sold subsidized, 16GB unlocked version with AT&T compatible bands. I was able to get the Mango update right away by doing the network disconnection trick.
I think I'll just send the cabs over.

The only physically branded devices dell made recently was the Streak7 on tmo, besides that they never had any external markings or even a custom carrier box.
(The S7 had a single tmo label on the back and that was it)
The rest is more or less correct though, carrier branded = carrier apps + carrier schedule.
Tmo initally had a good relationship with dell (launch partners for the S7 and VP) but then it went south and they blocked the HC update for the S7 and 7740+ for the VP.

Will I Have G1 Problems?

I'm about to buy the G1 and unlock it for AT&T, so my questions are. Is this the right site where I unlock my G1? http://www.unlock-tmobileg1.com/EN/unlock-code-G1.php?setCurrency=USD. Since AT&T and T-Mo have different bands will Edge and 3G work? And lastly when the new "cupcake" update comes out, since my phone is unlock can i just update and not have to worry?
Thanks
Edge will work but AT&T uses a different 3G frequency than T-Mo so you'll have no 3G. Since updates are pushed out by T-Mo I kinda doubt you'll get them if you're on the AT&T network but I could be wrong. If/when there is a cupcake release I'm sure it'll be made available here at XDA for manual installation. I got my unlock code directly from T-Mo so I can't vouch for any 3rd party sites but I know they're available on eBay for $16.99 and up.
Can anyone else tell me if the OTA updates will go to my phone if on AT&T and if it does will it mess up my unlock?
OTA updates will not affect simlock state. No clue whether G1 users on ATT will get OTA updates, but my guess is yes. You can still manually apply updates from sdcard as well.

Nope. Anyone can install signed updates from sdcard.
Thanks, so now that i know my unlock won't get messed up and can update whenever, that makes me happy.
To Unlock your phone you can call T-Mobile and have them do it free.
Don't Use Pay Sites, It Is A Ripoff
You have to be a T-Mobile customer for at least a given amount of time, i thought, since if you are not up-to-date with your payments, they wont send you an unlock code.
That is only for those that are on contract. If you are not on contract tell them you bought the phone outright and that you would like the unlock code immediatly.

Samsung Focus getting NoDo pushed out … by Rogers Canada

WMPoweruser says Rogers in Canada is pushing out the NoDo to the Focuses now (http://wmpoweruser.com/samsung-focus-getting-nodo-pushed-out-by-rogers-canada/). Is anyone here on Rogers and getting the update?
Nothing for me in Vancouver yet...
Did you try looking for the update in Zune? Looks like in the comments nobody got the message on the phone yet but Zune found it.
Would be interesting to see the firmware/radio/etc numbers after a Rogers update.
Hey Guys,
I got the Rogers Focus update on my phone today. I'm currently on Fido and since the update the roaming triangle is now showing on my phone. Prior to the update, this was not an issue.
Anybody else having the same problem? I don't want to get charged roaming fees for no reason
Thanks
What's the firmware version after update?
Not the OS version, but the firmware version.

I get the same triangle & had to allow data roaming, for data to work. I don't think we're getting charged for roaming, just that Fido uses the Rogers network so to the phone it's roaming. I remember WM5 & 6 had the triangle when SIM unlocked & using Fido.
Yep - tried through Zune, but nothing yet...
I'm on FIDO too... nothing so far. Got the pre-update a few weeks back, but No Donuts for me yet.
Yeah, I was wondering what the firmwares are too.
Yes.. Firmware version's please. I'm wondering if there is a difference between my "hacked" NoDo update and the official one.
Got the update too, but having the roaming triangle too since the update... and you have to activate the option of enabling the data even while roaming to ensure data is on...
NoDo FiDo
I have the roaming triangle too!

Hey,
Rogers users might want to plug their phones back into Zune and see if you get a firmware update after the NoDo update:http://wpcentral.com/samsung-focus-rogers-bell-getting-firmware-update. Then let us know; if you don't mind. Thanks
It was reported today that rogers will be getting separate firmware updates for the focus.
That means Att will probably follow suit. I hope these firmware changes dont take things away from us that we already have. On the other hand maybe they will help other issues.
I am thinking about de branding my ATT focus to check for these firmware updates but want someone else to be the guinea pig. LOL
HAHA, The guy above beat me to it.

HAHA. I was going to say WPCentral said they tried to get the firmwares but couldn't. I bet if you put in Rogers branding instead of ATT-US you would might get it. Anyone know what that is?
Unless ATT has proprietary firmwares on their Focuses?!?!

Unlocked S8 US

Anyone know why Samsung takes so long to update the unlocked version? Is it due to compatability with all carriers and need to push carrier updates to get approved then they can push update to unlocked?
I'd imagine one reason is that they sell far fewer units for the unlocked versions.
I believe it is for security reasons. Easier to push out updates with errors that you can't exploit because of it being locked. Then having to make sure updates for the unlocked versions are more secure
I doubt it has anything to do with carrier compatibility, because I know that Samsung is not certifying the unlocked S8 for ATT. That is why the unlocked one cannot get VoLTE on ATT. There are very few unlocked devices that ATT certified for their network (HTC A9 comes to mind) and get on VoLTE. Verizon is not too far from this.
So, if we scratch carrier certification (because Samsung is not doing it), who knows what kind of contractual barrier with carriers is preventing them from updating the unlocked S8 and S8+. I guess similar contractual barrier that is preventing Sony selling their unlocked models with enabled fingerprint readers.

Ok that's the difference. You have a T-Mobile version that got a similar update except from what I had read it is May security patch. I actually have a factory unlocked S8 that isn't from any carrier. It got the update with June security patch

Unlocked S8 Oreo Update

Has anyone with an unlocked S8 (US) received the Oreo ota yet?
Ive always had Verizon branded Galaxy / Android phones in the past so I am not as familiar with the unlocked ota process. Do unlocked Galaxy phones typically receive ota updates last?
I have a Tmo device on U1(unlocked) firmware and haven't received the update yet. It's somewhat annoying that both Vzw and Tmo got oreo before the unlocked.

Why is unlocked variant last to get updates? No carrier bloat to update, so technically it should be first.

Unfortunately that's just how it's is, hence why Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint have the official Oreo update including the exynos variant. As for unlocked variants they'll eventually get it, but you'll probably get Oreo root faster than your official update. Or if you're impatient just grab an Oreo beta and work with that.
My Verizon s8+ that I use my tmobile sim got it yesterday. It changed the Verizon boot logo to tmobile. No more Verizon bloatware.
They said the U1 beta testers would be the first to get it too and that didn't happen.
Who ultimately pushes the ota for unlocked phones? Is it the manufacturer (Samsung) or the carrier that you're using the phone on?
If it is the carrier, then I suppose it makes sense that they would prioritize their locked variants first.
Waiting for Oreo OTA
Re: They said the U1 beta testers would be the first to get it too and that didn't happen.
Yes. It's taking a great deal of patience. Samsung seems to have appreciated our feedback as beta testers and then led us out to pasture and left is behind. I think I'm running a Jan 16 beta build and have been waiting...
What software version are you guys on? I am still on nougat 7.0. Are they going to push out 8.0 and skipping 7.1?

I was told that the unlocked variant needs all US carriers to sign off on it before they can send it out.
I'm running beta Oreo for U1. Still no update. I wouldn't mind so much if the lockscreen didn't interfere with listening to music, the music gets slow, choppy, distorted sounds when the lock screen turns off my display. Can't listen to music in my car, it's so annoying. Wish they'd expedite the update like now. They basically jacked my radio with that bug. lol

no that's bull****. that defeats the entire purpose of getting an unlocked phone.
The unbranded and unlocked version must work with both GSM and CDMA networks. They also must work with the carriers features like, WiFi calling, call waiting, etc. If I understand this correctly, they will require some form of carriers' certifications. Therefore unlocked phones will face delays from both Samsung and the carriers. I made a mistake of not believing former owners and publications about slow updates when I bought my S8 from Samsung. I have since corrected my mistake and bought a Pixel 2. You'll have to adjust to a plain Jane Android but you must give up something to get the timely OS updates from Google.
I am now fully convinced that Samsung will never change and Samsung phone owners who are dissatisfied with the unlocked OS updates can buy phones other than Samsung. Sony seems to be serious with the US market with their new Xperia XZ2.Sony's OS is as close to plain Android and their updates are not bad. My 2-yr old Xperia X has been on Oreo 8.0 for awhile now. Essential can be a player too.
Do yourself a favor. Stay away from Samsung if your priority is timely OS update.
If they let Snapdragon Users unlock bootloaders this was not a problem. May they will let us do that or some one will find an exploit i mean, yo can unlock bootloader on china snapdragon s8. #IWillBuyMyGalaxyS10WithExynos

Well I hope this is true for Oreo, but I doubt. The 7.0 the unbranded fw for at&t doesn't even allow VoLTE or WiFi calling out of the box.
Not sure about ATT but Oreo works on those features from T-Mobile. By the way I failed to mention that I am on Oreo Beta in my unlocked S8 which I used with Tmo.

Telus / Koodo updates

I always got updates bas quick as Essential released them.
June Telus listed the PH1 as EOL (end of life) and pulled all products from their store.
Now I have yet to receive the July update. Anyone else?
Is this how Telus decides to do things? As soon as a device is EOL ignore it and pull out the "we have to run extensive tests to make sure the manufacturer's update is compatible with our network and systems" excuse to hold up updates (ie, ignore the device) to get you to "upgrade".
Sent from my PH-1 using Tapatalk
Pull out the SIM, restart, and check for an update. You should get the update direct from Essential. I use a Telus device, albeit with Bell and everything has been smooth sailing when it comes to updates.
As for the carriers in Canada I think we can all agree that their best name is Robellus.
Already tried that.
I suppose it will show eventually.

The same here, no July updates on stock 8.1 / Koodo. Makes me think to ask for refund
So your phones are not unlocked eg they are locked to a carrier?
All Canadian phones are unlocked.
Telus was the only carrier (and it's subbrand Koodoo) that sold the Essential so Essential lets them handle the updates.
Usually, in Canada, when you place a sim card in it is "provisioned" for that carrier. The updates are then handled by that carrier.
For example, my HTC U11+ (a phone not carried by Telus) needs to he on Wifi to get an update notification.
Hence the "take the sim card out" suggestion.

Well that is unfortunate.
