first root...then softwareupdate? or otherwise ? - Milestone 2 General

Hallo,
i have a Milestone 2
Im goin to root it but i also want to make a systemupdate.
in sysinfo it says firmwareversion 2.2.1.......and on motorolahomepage i can download android 2.3 (gingerbread)
so my idea is to patch the newest firmware und patch gingerbread on my device, then after that i want to root it.
but im a little bit unsure, because im new to android-phones (last phone was htc-kaiser with cooked rom)
so i better ask here and dont risk, that i get the newest OS on my device but make rooting it harder by that.
what is the best way to get my phone in a rooted status with updated software ?
should i update ? ...i like the feeling of new software, but also know, that new is not = better
can anyone help me plz...i canceled updateing my phone so far, till i know the right order to do
thx 4 help

ok, after i found a way to root my milestone2 with gingerbread on it i now upgrade to gingerbread and try this way of rooting
Milestone 2 is listed in the devices confirmed working.....
hope i do not wrong :/
anyway i like to hear some tipps
greetz

sry 4 so much noobquestions, but i have another problem now....
i tried to upgrade to gingerbread. but the motorola update software did not find my phone.
on the homepage it says i need a "micro usb data cable"
i have a normal "micro usb cable"... i there a diffrence ?
i know that their where different cables for phones (data, flash, etc) but i thought in times there mini/micro-usb-cables are standard there are not differences in cabletypes.
am i wrong ??
greetz

Be aware that you will have very few options to choose from on custom roms when you are on gingerbread. There are a lot more to choose from if you stay on froyo.
I have used different sorts of cables micro usb cables and they all work. Try using a different usb port and make sure the cables are inserted fully. If not try a different cable, the one you have may be defective.

Actually, now there's a method to go back to Froyo from official GB, if needed, look in the Android Development section.
"what is the best way to get my phone in a rooted status with updated software ?"
If you mean rooting on Froyo, z4root works (at least for me). If you mean rooting GB, superoneclick is the one. Just be sure to stay away from the official 2.3 from Vivo (Brazil) and Personal (Argentina), because these too can't be rooted right now + you can't downgrade.
should i update ? ...i like the feeling of new software, but also know, that new is not = better
Well, that's up to you... fSince I've tried my first custom ROM in my old Motorola Quench, I haven't used an official ROM for more than 2 days. At least try it, if you don't like you can always go back.
About the USB cable, any cable that fits the phone should work... Have you installed the Motorola USB Drivers? If not, download them from Motorola's website and try again. Also, I think I read here in the forum some time ago that some guys were having problems with RSD Lite (sorry, don't remember if it was the same as the one you got), but changing the version helped.
About the tips, the best one I can give you is: Read the forums, there's much information out there, any doubts you may have probably have been answered around here before, any problems you may run into, I'm sure someone here had them before and there's a solution.

thank you for helping me out..
the tel is now detected from the updatesoftware.
i installed net.framework 4 made a windows-update, restartet, connected the phone "moto phone portal" in backround and it worked.
Im goin to flash the orginal gingerbread 2.3 upgrade from the Motorola Homepage
it is the German (Vodafone) Version.
I know that they are more options to choose a cooked ROM then i stay on Froyo, but i think Gingerbread has few cool new features also. And my "problem" is, that i want to have a German ROM, so i have a better workflow on my cellphone......and because of that i anyway dont have real good options to choose a cooked rom.
EDIT: I see that some ROMS are tagged as "multilanguage". I hope that this means a full german translation in any casy (dictionary, etc). But afaik there will be also cooked ROMs on gingerbread.
Can anybody say me, if i can have any improvement by a firmwareupdate ?
it says:
Firmware-version: 2.2.1
Firmware-config: GAS_EMEA_USAMS1FRYOVFDE_P009
ps: now im a little bit conzerned, so i first root my froyo, then make a nandroidbackup, then i upgrade to gingerbread. (so i perhaps have better chances to go back)

bah ((
i tried to update to gingerbread, managed that my phone is regonized, but softwareupdate tells me "there is no update". MotorolaHP tells gingerbread is avaivable.
so now im going to flash a costom image.
anyone has a good suggestion for a good costum gingerbread that supports german ??

ok sry 4 going on everybodys nervs with so much noobquestions....but....
.. i decided to choose this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1169038
i already rooted my phone with z4root.
now im going to flash the ROM from above, but the howto is a little bit complicated for my noob-brain.
there says quote:
"1. Put the Nandroid backup folder MS2Ginger on the SDCard in this folder: /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup"
i dont have such a folder on my sd. should i just create it or is any programm missing ??
EDIT: OK just realized that i need to install clockworkmod but i really would be happy if someone can help me a little with that tutorial.
for example it says at point 13: (only if you have froyo kernel) i have kernel 2.6.32.9....so i can skip this point ?
EDITEDIT: installed rom manager, but cant install "clockworkmod recovery from program (in the list there is no milestone 2, only milestone), dont work
ill try it with Droid2 bootstrapper now...

i installed latest droid 2 bootstrapper. I first press "bootstep recovery"......sucsess.
now i press "reboot revovery" to rebbot an male a backup......
the device reboots, but not in recovery....just normal reboot
what am i doing wrong ??
can someone help me plz ?
EDIT: i installed 2ndInit Recovery ....no chance ((( nothing really happens. can someone plz help me ut itz really frustrating :!

ok,...i have no idea.
my problem is that bootstrap droid2 dont start to recovery mode.....no matter what i do, it just makes a normal restart, after i press "reboot to recovery"
i think where is a somethink wrong with my bootloader, perhaps because i installed ClockworkMod ROM Manager before and pressed "milestone" in the install...... a later realized, that droid2 is ment with my european "milestone 2"
something is terribly wrong, and i have to give up, because even a hard-reset could not solve my problem

on boot and if your CWM is working there should be a blue led at the top right of the phone.. you should hit volume down to access CWM..

you mean if i press "boot recovery" and it restarts i have to press volume down ?? OMG ! the program dont give me that hint....
but i cant see a LED that confirms me it is working.....
thx 4 help...any other suggestions that brings me more towards having a cool cooked ROM ?

[Q] Noob Question..Sorry..

Im a complete noob trying to get a hang of the smartphone rooting lingo. Believe me when i say that i know next to nothing. Ive just finally managed to root my x5 using z4root (i presume it worked...the reset was very fast...but i see that "superuser" is in the apps list now (not that i know what its for anyway.). The reason im trying to learn how to root and install roms etc is coz my x5 will not connect to my wifi and trust me, ive tried everything that has been suggested on other forums..ive tried all the basics. Im noob, but not THAT noob ok ^^. But i dont know what effects installing a custom rom might have on the wifi at this stage. I see that a custom rom can allow for wifi teethering. So im hoping that might help , sumhow. Its worth a try , before i throw the thing out the window ^^.
So basically anyway , my question is:
Ive rooted the phone (im pretty sure)....so what should i do next? and in the correct sequence, to get my phones hacked software up to spec with you guys?.
e.g ..do i install this clockworkmod thing next..and then a rom, then a kernel?...i dont know what any of these things are or what they are used for...so if anyone could give me a simple bullet pointed list of what to install and in what order...id be VERY VERY grateful =) ...its doing my head in trying to read through these tutorials and trying to figure out what everyones even talking about ^^". Dont have to get too carried away..just a simple list and the correct order will do...i will figure out the rest. (As long as you dont miss any step out of course e.g ...some app i might need to install a crucial app etc. ) Thank You!!

1) then download to your pc from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1067490 the recovery-en.zip which is the Clockwork Recovery and follow carefully the Detailed Installation from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13083454&postcount=1
2) go to this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059753 and download to your pc the one it says : Complete rom with all fixes and 1.5Ghz kernel
and then follow the instructions carefully from the same post...
then hopefully you are ready....
BUT BE CAREFUL AND READ EVERYTHING AND BE SURE THAT YOU HAVE UNDERSTOOD EVERYTHING BEFORE STARTING
//and an advice from me (i'm very new also in adroid) that in every step you should check again the steps from the posts so you don't forget something...

Ok, so far ive got as far as renaming recovery.img to recovery.bak and copied the new recovery.img into the same folder. So i presume clockwork recovery is installed now?.
Next i downloaded the 100mb ,or so, rom and have copied it to the sd card. But now i dont know how to "boot to clockworkmod". Is it the same as holding volume keys and power button?...coz if it is, when i do that part it comes up with a purple screen. Otherwise.....how do i boot to clockworkmod?..or does the purple screen mean that somethings not installed right?....
Thanks again.

Volume-Up + Power button should bring you to the recovery menu.
Excellent...Volume up +.....that made a difference. thanks for that..i shall now continue the process. Thanks =)
ok next problem...in clockworkmod i go to "apply update from sdcard"..then it says these things:
Install from SDcard
-Finding update package...
-Opening update package...
-E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
Installation aborted.
do i need to create an "sdcard" folder in the sdcard itself...then put the zip file in it?
nevermind ...i see it Matters which sdcard u put the rom onto....looks like its gota be the external one...not the internal one...ok ...moving on.....
well its all installed now. Thanks for the tips. Although it didnt fix my wifi - wireless router connection =x....wonder what it is =x
if you have your wifi with pass check if without encryption it connects...
just to see all the possibillities...
if you continue to have problems without encryption then some compatibility is the problem...
have you checked it with other wifi?
if this happens only with your router then you can search for a more specific solution...

Before installing official gingerbread

Flashing the official gingerbread in u8800 its irreversivel process, at least for now.
If you flash it you have to keep it as no way of going back.
If you root it using the only available method, bye bye!
Everytime you reboot the endless bootlooping starts and the only way to stop it is formatting data.
Which means everytime you reboot = bye bye all data and apps etc.
I think is something that its major importance and no one is mentioning this!!!!
I don't know, maybe I've been preaching to deaf ears or something...but...you can re-install the old ROM back, the CWM recovery won't work with the official GB - that much is true - but you will be able to downgrade to an official 2.2.2 (I used the B162) version with the regular update method (at least I was and everything is working just as normal as it used to).
So, irreversible - I don't think so
with the current CWM recovery - it's a no-go
edit: that being said, what works for me, doesn't necessarily work for everyone, so be careful and blame the guy in the mirror -not me, if it doesn't work for you. =)
I think Huawei says wrong here. I flashed 2.3 yesterday. After that, because of the haptic issue I flashed back to official 2.2. Only problem after the 2.2, recovery console had opened. I did factory reset there and phone started without a problem. Then, I had upgraded to 2.3 again. Still haptic don't vibrate. Other than, no problem here. Maybe, I will go back again to 2.2.
Well you are lucky then because you are the only one.
Perhaps what is saying in the official intructions that will be impossible to dowgread after this upgrade won't apply to you.
I have try it with at least 8/9 versions of official release and nothing works!!!!
what 2.2 version is that and you did it after or before rooting?
Have you tried with internal sd? I copied dload folder to internal and started the upgrade process from Storage-Upgrade Firmware. Where did your phone stuck?
Edit: I didn't root my phone. Waiting proper solution. I had used B138.
no, I'm using external SD.
now I'm downloading another official release to try to downgrade using another one...
this time is U8800 V100R001C17B162CUSTC17D001

Well, like I said, what works for me doesn't necessarily work for you.
Anyway, this is what I did and it worked, maybe it can help others.
0. Copy the original B162 ROM ("dload"-folder which has two files, UPDATE.APP AND UPDATE_CUST.APP) to the root of your SDCARD
1. Update to B162 by holding down +- keys while turning on the phone
2. After the first reboot, it's giving error messages for not being able to mount this and that...just ignore it and...
--> Wipe data / factory reset --> remove battery
3. Update the B162 again --> this time everything should go OK, if so, your phone is back to stock B162 and you're ready to use it or update a custom rom (just install Clockwork recovery like you used to and start from there)
The last point (3) may be unnecessary, but I did so just to make sure everything's ok.
Edit: OK, and I meant b162, not b160...

yes I made it with this B162.

And then there's the fact that the official gb is still beta, it's not supposed to work perfectly. But as long as the dev team here stays active, I think that I'm gonna stick with custom roms too.
ho my god.
didn't work.
is always booting into recovery
I am stuck here also (
Nothing worked
I tried clockwork recovery - it doesnt get to. It is just rebooting.
I tried with various dload UPDATE.IMG's (GB Overseas, GB orig chinese,B162,B138) nothing is working - stucked in "Step 1/2 Unpacking" window forever.
Anyone has solution for this ?

I have just flashed with new U8800V100R001C00B517G001(Beta1.0)(Overseas Normal)(Gingerbread) but after flashing I kept waiting for start my phone. I restasted many times but same, then I format data its worked and when restarted again it goes in same condition any help ?
until flash disk is writable and it is - there will always be way to go back to old versions it just files.. like reinstalling windows on your pc.
Since the new Rom is public I have read all posts about it here. Maybe I had lucky, or simple due it without messing with the files.
Yesterday I made the upgrade to the new rom, directly from the last Oxigen version, without downgrade to 2.2. I simply create the dload folder on SD card, put there de update file, boot with +- Power, and chose upgrade from SD card.
After step 2 I reboot the phone a install step 3 upgrade. Everything as installed fine, no boot loops, nothing...
Also the root method decribed in this forum as work on first time.
24 hours after the upgrade, and some reboots to test, I never se the boot loops, and the phone is working well.
The new ROM, even in beta stage, to me is a great improvement.
Well either you were lucky or me and the majority were unlucky.
But issues only start to happens when rooting.
So that you can see it fried me the 1 USB cable. This cable is only good to charge the battery now....
Also, ****ed the device USB storage MOUNT.
I connect it to the computer and the computer sees it as a CD drive not allowing any changes.
Also when press the button to mount the USB on the device it never gets mounted and gives the messages that the SD can now be removed.
So I have put this issue many times but up to the moment no one even reply to help.

[Q] Backing-up and flashing

Hey, guys (and girls? )! Just got a new DEFY+ couple of days back and I'd like to get the most out of it. It's already working all smooth and sexy, but I'm sure it can do better. So I need some assistance
Phone info:
DEFY+ (MB526)
Android 2.3.4
System 45.0.74.MB526.Retail.en.DE
Kernel 2.6.32.9-gbad50c3
Build 4.5.1-134_DFP-74
I've rooted it yesterday and I'm pretty sure it was successful, since the phone is working and I've got SuperUser on it since then (I've followed the root part of the all-in-one super DEFY guide thread)
About backing up, I would like to be able to go back to my old backup at any time. Is that even possible? I know I probably never will go back to it, but I like to play things safe. If it is possible, could you teach me how or point me to some nice guide/thread on that?
When it comes to flashing, I'd like to try CM, WAJKIUI and MS2G. Any more ROMs that are a must try? Now, I didn't quite understand... Are there different versions for defy and defy+? Or...which ROMs are compatible with defy+? I've read somewhere that all defy ROMs can't use defy+'s battery properly, so that's what concerns me. Nandload? How to?
I'm sorry if these are stupid questions, I've tried finding out everything from the guides, but I just didn't find enough information... I do have RSD (v5.0.0, is it okay?) and the drivers, all set up. I'm not asking for anyone to write an essay for me, it will be perfectly fine if you just point me to some (really really) good guides. I'll be grateful for any and every answer!
*EDIT #1* Well, I've tried to learn some more... Let's go step by step. Should I install 2ndInit app or some other custom recovery app?
I can beg if need be
"*EDIT #1* Well, I've tried to learn some more... Let's go step by step. Should I install 2ndInit app or some other custom recovery app?"
Hi,
as I've seen the guides, yes.
I've defy, so I didn't try it, but heard from many people with defy+ with CM or MIUI.
BUT before it I suggest to you:
- get a stock sbf of your rom. It is necessary if you want get back the original factory state. hope here you find it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537
- install titanium backup from market (I know this, but you can install any similar app) and make a full backup (all user and system app). It saves all data, installed apps with settings ...
- make backup of your contacts and sms-s with stock app (it is possible I think)
- make backup of your sd content
After that you can install 2ndinitdefy. Follow the instructions in the program. I suggest 1.4.2 version. If it doesn't work go to 2.0. The 2.0 has instructions not on the main screen but in its menu.
After the 2 reboot (regarding 2ndinit install) you can do a nandroid backup with clockworkmod recovery.
Reboot, push vol down at blue led (after start with 8-10 sec). You are at bootloader. Use vol up/down to navigate and power to enter a menu. Go to recovery-> custom recovery->backup and recovery->backup all. It takes some time. You can save this nandroid to computer (just for safety ) You find it in sd/clockworkmod/backup.
Now you have backups. Go ahead, install the custom rom of your choice.
I recommend WajkIUI. You find the link in my signature and you find installing instructions in Wajk's first post. And of course there are defy+ users in that thread as I remember, you can ask question there.
ps: everything is your responsibility
Was it helpful? Just use thank button
Good luck bro/sis !!!
Thank you for such a long reply!
I have installed 2ndInit, using the v2.0 installer, but I chose the stable version of the 2nd init itself, instead of the latest one. That stable one said it was meant for CM and MIUI, so I'm guessing I'll be alright with WajkIUI as well!
I'll follow the steps you gave me for making a complete backup of everything on my phone and then I'll start looking for a ROM that's fully mb526 compatible (I need >10 posts to be able to post in the development section :/ )
P.S. I'm a bro
I see. This 10 post rule a bit annoying. But as I know you can send private message to anyone. In the Wajkiui thread there are some people with 526.
I've got my 10 posts Thank you once more and I'm sure we'll be talking again soon!
I'm having a hard time finding a full SBF of my stock ROM...
It's 4.5.1-134_DFP-74 (Android 2.3.4)
I don't really understand the codes in that name, so can someone please tell me if I could flash some close to this sbf if I ever need to? I've found some with just that value after "...DFP-" different. Would they be okay?
Please let me know! I wanna load up something different, but don't want to do so until I have a full sbf as well, just in case of emergency

You should ask Walter79. I found similar sbf as yours in his thread /forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537/ at "my roms" link:

Mate, thanks for the info, but I've already found and flashed a full .sbf The topic said it was 2.3.4, while it turned out to be 2.3.5, but I don't mind, got my phone working again after a failed flashing of cm7.2..!

Chinese Atrix - Questions about FW, Bootloader, Root

Hi Guys!
I know, some people will hate me now because I opened a thread for that.
But the search did not help for chinese FW, so I wanna give it a try here!
I just got a chinese Atrix with the following information in settings:
System Version:45.2.14.ME860.ChinaRetail.en.CN
Android: 2.3.5
Baseband: BP_N_01.41.00R
Webtop: Unavailable
Kernel:2.6.32.9-00007-g9570040 [email protected]#2
Build number: 4.5.3-118_OLY-14
Superuser is already instaled and when i bootup the phone, "Unlocked" is shown in the upper left corner!
What I wanna know:
Is it rooted (yes of course, I think!)
Is the bootloader unlocked (never had a phone that says "unlocked" when booting up with an unlocked BL...)
Can I just flash CM9 for example or is there anything I should be aware of?
Sorry for beeing an Atrix n00b =)
And thanks for all suggestions!
The Unlocked text on the Motorola screen is an indicator that your device's boot loader is unlocked. I would recommend referencing the NOOB threads covering rooting and flashing ROMs for the rest.
Thanks for that!
But it's already rooted (super user is installed and I tried apps that need root).
What I wanted to know is, if I can just flash new roms or do I have to be cautioness, like many threads say: Don't flash back if u use build nr. xyz...

Kernel:2.6.32.9-00007-g9570040 [email protected]#2
Build number: 4.5.3-118_OLY-14
Superuser is already installed and rooted.
Booting up the phone, "Unlocked" is shown in the upper left corner!
If you do a thorough search, you will know that to start to flash cm9, you need:
1. bootloader unlocked, machine rooted
2. clockworkMod (cwm) flashed
3. then flashing CM will be easy. Just put some zip files in root of sd card and then run ClockworkMod.
See but dun follow the cwm installation:
wiki点cyanogenmod点com/wiki/Motorola_Atrix_4G:_Full_Update_Guide
Your Atrix and mine are probably in stage 1.
Last night I tried to follow the old instruction in the link above to flash cwm.
But the fastest manner to run cwm is by installing Rom Manager instead.
Rom manager is super easy to use and I manage to get it to flash cwm in my Atrix. With cwm running, I boot from it and get cwm to flash Gapps in my Atrix.
Now I got cwm & gapps both running very well.
All my gmail, gPlay, gCalendar, gMap..... running quite well.
The next step I can make is to save cm9 zip files in the root of sd card and run cwm to flash it.
I am currently stuck like you. I wan to flash ics thru cm9 but worrying bricking Atrix. Moto may come up with ics for atrix real soon so I dun know if I want to wait.
Good luck
Sounds like you are on the right track. Once you have cwm flashed you can reboot, hold the volume down rocker as the phone reboots. Once you see another option under the "unlocked" text you can then tap the volume down rocker until you get to the recovery option, then tap the volume up rocker. This will bring up a whole new menu that you can use to clear cache, Dalvik cache and factory wipe.
When I flashed my first ROM I was very nervous that I was going to ruin my phone, but I have flash many ROMs since then some with gapps included and some that require you to flash gapps seperate. I have enjoyed many ROMs and have not run into any problems I couldn't fix by rebooting into recovery.
Good luck and enjoy the ROMs of your choice!
Hey guys!
Thanks for all your help!
First, I forgot to say, it's not the first time doing this stuff xD
It's my third android phone, so all is very similar to the Defy, but still I like to ask one time too often instead of crying about a bricked phone =)
What I have done now: Because bootloader was already open and cwm was already insalled, I could skip the hardest part and jumped right into flashing.
Ok, not really, because I updated cwm to romracers version (not really necessary, but everyone suggested it...)
Right now I'm running Neutrinos CM7 mod because other mods gave me randome reboots
First problem was: My Radio version does not work with this rom! "About phone" says "Baseband unknown".
I went crazy bcs I thought I got a broken phone from taobao, but smart as I am (hrhr) I made a nandroid backup before, flashed it back, and tadaa, with the old backup I had network connection....
So I googled a little more and found out about the Radio-Thread here.
Now I'm testing all the radios to ind the best one...
Good thing is, network connection is working now, bad thing is, it sucks my battery dry like a h**ker that gets too much money
@qqqqaa: does your radio version work with CM9?
Maybe I should try yours...
Can any of you with the Chinese ROM confirm that call recording works on your phone and if possible, do share a dump of your ROM.

My Defy is a zombie

Hello, let me tell you how it all started.
This cell was functioning normally, he had been able to install cyanogenmod 9 and 10, like miui 3, 4 and 5. I could also reinstall the gingerbread.
But the mistake I made was when the cyanogenmod 10 wanted to go gingerbread , I'm wrong in the configuration of "sndinit" program and in "2nd boot" place in "2nd init" and reboot and flash.
Since then every time I try to flash not you allow me, I will not accept root, but runs a very basic version of gingerbread.
Can anything be done to return it as it was originally?
Using RDSlite not work.
PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!:crying::crying::crying:

-"Using RDSlite not work.": Explain. Not work is not enought information to help you.
Please elaborate so we can help you better, also the defy has a locked bootloader so it is pretty hard if not impossible to brick (correct me if I am wrong)
If you are not a native english speaker, I can help you in spanish if need, by PM of course.
