So...it's probably safe to say that everyone in this forum knows about the 7 year roaming deal that AT&T has signed with T-Mobile. Does anyone have any ideas on when that will happen? And the big question...will the iPhone technically be able to be used on 3G with T-Mobile? Yes, it would only work while roaming, but would it not work for some reason? A T-Mobile rep brought up the question and I thought it was a good question. I'd like it to bring in revenues for T-Mobile...but I love my fast speed I get with T-Mobile, and 10 gazillion iPhones would do nothing but harm for that.
**Updated** Please, if anyone can check their Android phone (via *#0011#) and post if it says band II along with the city you're in at the time that it shows it! We need to find out which cities have been refarmed to 1900MHz for 3G/4G.

It'd be 2G roaming. The carriers' 3G networks are incompatible. While AT&T devices will work on T-Mobile's EDGE data, it shouldn't be common enough to impact our speeds much. The only way this could possibly happen is if both AT&T and T-Mobile started selling exclusively pentaband HSPA devices. Which would be awesome on so many levels.

It's 3G, check Engadget. I'm sure it's 2G as well. And I know of at least one phone that is pentaband UMTS...mine, the Galaxy S II lol

The OP specifically asked about the iPhone, which is unable to get 3G on T-Mobile's network. So if an AT&T iPhone were to roam on T-Mobile's network, it would not get 3G speeds.
Edit: The Galaxy Nexus is also pentaband, and so are the Nokia N8 and N9. The original Vibrant is also pentaband.
The Skyrocket is also pentaband, so I'll be able to mooch off of 42.2mbps HSPA+ when I get an LTE throttle. LOL

Skyrocket has a more advanced modem.
Well, it's really just the T-Mobile radio with LTE slapped into it, so yes, I do have 42.2Mbps.
has anyone tried the AT&T skyrocket on T-Mobile? Does it support HSPA+ AWS? AFAIK, only LTE works on AWS for this phone.
Thanks everyone for the phones. I've been busy and couldn't really update the thread. The current gen iPhone doesn't have AWS, yes, but since the roaming agreement is UMTS, wouldn't that allow T-Mobile devices that have the ability to roam on 850/1900 bands the ability to connect to their 3G network? So jailbroken iPhones that are activated on T-Mobile could roam over to AT&T 3G, it's just that it isn't likely that AT&T would allow it.
Am I right in my assumption?

Over at the T-Mobile SGS II forums, when I flashed a T-Mo SGS II modem, I gained access to 1700/2100.
All I need is a T-Mo SIM card to test if it'll connect to 3G, which I don't have.
I have the GSM Galaxy Nexus so naturally I am quite excited for this.
But the question remains... Does anyone have the slightest idea when this service will go live???

It's not as simple as touching AT&T, and roaming.
You have to be in an area where there is COMPLETELY no T-Mobile signal, it can't even pick it up when you scan for it. Then, and ONLY then, will the SIM allow you to verify it on AT&T's network for roaming.
With AT&T's larger coverage footprint, you T-Mo users should have some nice coverage while traveling.

Where do you get your information? I thought that's how it has always worked prior to this new roaming agreement. I spoke to a T-mobile store rep (not the best source of information) and he told me that iPhones on west coast had 3G access.

I've heard that T-Mo is doing some spectrum refarming on the PCS band...in other words, 3G is starting to pop up in certain markets on the 1900MHz band

Telus' new 3.5G network runs HSDPA / WCDMA 1900/850.
I read that ATT runs on 1900/850? Or at least 850? If I got an unlocked ATT Nexus one would it have both the 1900 and the 850 band?

And what, might I ask, is an "ATT Nexus one"? Nexus one is sold and branded by GOOGLE. It has UMTS 900/1700/2100. This is NOT the same as ATT frequencies, which are, as you mention, 850/1900.
The difference is that ATT has an EDGE network and GN1 supports EDGE at 850/900/1800/1900. BELUS does NOT.
If you want to use GN1 in Canada, I recommend you switch providers to WIND. Their rates are WAY better, and they run on UMTS 1700/2100, which is compatible with GN1.
I get a really *really* good deal with Telus. Unlimited data, more txt and minuets then ill ever use, all the extras (caller id, voice mail) and all for under $45. I make good use of the unlimited data via tethering.
Switching from telus isn't an option.
Oh, and sorry for calling it an ATT Nexus One, I was simply implying it was available on the ATT network, my mistake.
The version of the nexus one that works on ATT's 3g has not been released yet. It recently passed through the FCC, but AFAIK the only one available now is the T-mobile version.
You should be good though buying an ATT 3g version when they come out. Who knows maybe sales to Canada will be open by then.

I picked up an SGSII from Expansys and it runs no problem on Fido up in Canada. I'm taking a trip down to the US next month and was wondering which of the big carriers in the states would run the SGSII. I figure AT&T would, but as the phone is quad-band, I'm not 100% sure if there are other national carriers that would do the trick.

Of the major US carriers, it will work on ATT and T-Mobile. It will only get 3g on AT&T as the SGS2 doesn't support TMO's 3g bands.
Hmm. I'm a little confused. The wikipedia page for T-Mobile says that their 3G bands are 2100MHz and 1700MHz. The SGSII apparently has 2100MHz as one of the accepted frequencies (again according to wiki). How come 3G won't work on T-Mobile?
Presumably, the phone won't work on Verizon because, while the frequencies match, Verizon is running on CDMA and the SGSII only supports GSM. Right?

T-Mo US needs 1700 and 2100, not just 2100. Att uses 850 or 1900. 3G won't work on T-Mo
No matter what it says on paper, there's a couple of people here that have tried the phone on T-Mobile U.S and get EDGE speed downloads.

T-mo 3G is 1700 mhz. AFAIK, the Note doesn't support this. So you're out of luck for 3G on T-mo USA (or any other service that backpacks onto T-mo's network, like SIMple Mobile.)

Actually, the hardware is in the device for Tmo 3g 1700/2100. However, it's not enabled.

This is probably due to the likely joint operations that is likely between T-Mobile and AT&T now that AT&T's deal to buy them out looks like it won't happen.
But there are reports of Iphone 4S, which uses 1900Mhz, to run at 3g speeds on T-Mobile. If that is true, wouldn't the GNote also be capable of running at 3g speeds with its 1900 Mhz frequency?
Well if anyone has a 1900mhz phone only and gets 3G with T-Mobile, please report your location.
If I didn't have to register to that site, I would tell them: Screw the iPhone, this is where my Galaxy Note comes in.

Yeah I've heard something about that. However, for all intents and purposes, until someone figures out a way to enable that, the Note is still just a quad-band 3/4G device (850/900/1900/2100) as far as I'm concerned.
As for the 4S being able to operate on T-mo's 3G, I'm willing to bet that it has more to do with the Gobi chip inside. I'm pretty sure the 4S chipset supports 1700 AWS.

From the different articles I've read (The Verge, Redmond Pie, etc) it seems this is only happening in parts of California and Nevada but they expect it to grow across the country in the coming months.

If I remember correctly, if the deal fell through it was almost 8 Billion dollars in penalties. 3 or 4 billion in cash or stock swaps and the balance in frequency trades and roaming deals.
I was wondering why I can only get EDGE on my TMobile G2 phone... is it because of the GSM incompatibility that some TMobile phones have with the ATT network or am I doing something wrong?

I got "connection problem or invalid MMI code" when I ran that.
Edit: Did a bit more research and it turns out that it does *not* support 1900 MHz UTMS for 3G, so basically, this phone + ATT network = no 3G service, as the hardware is incompatible.

Actually, I don't think the G2 even does 3G on anything but AWS. The HTC Desire Z (identical but without carrier branding) has a version that supports AT&T 3G, however.

Can you explain what you mean by "use *#0011# and make sure the bands are unlocked"? My Samsung phone can't get 4g service here on T-Mobile and it doesn't do 3G so I'd really like to enable HSPA+ if that's possible. I don't see anything on that screen that I can unlock though.

Check which UMTS (3G) bands your phone supports - I suspect yours does not support T-Mobile's 3G band (IV). The information is usually available on wikipedia or gsmarena.
You do not "enable" 3G through software changes. Your phone supports it or it doesn't.

It does support band IV, 1700Mhz, but it doesn't do HSPA+ so it can't get 3G. That screen still doesn't tell me anything though.

That's not how HSPA+ works - it's essentially just faster 3G. Also, I found your phone on GSMArena, not sure how you searched but the information is all there and it supports band IV (1700/2100) and I (2100).
Are you sure you've enabled 3G (or deselected "Use only 2G networks")?
What is the history of the phone (bought new, used, etc.)? It should "just work" on T-Mobile as it's T-Mobile branded but, no offense, your details are a little vague.

Sorry if I was vague but it doesn't "just work" on T-Mobile! At first I though all Exhibit II models would be the same however they could have different versions like the Galaxy 2 that has an older version for 3G and a newer version that also now gets 4G, who knows.
The phone was purchased new a few months ago and is still stock. I know HSPA+ is faster 3G since I can get it on 1700Mhz on another device using the T-Mobile SIM from the Exhibit 2. Can't get HSPA+ or 3G on the Exhibit 2 though.

If I leave the store and go down the street there's no signal though.
I have verified that WCDMA for 4G is on 1700 and GSM for Edge is on 1900 using a spectrum analyzer but it never uses 2100 and has never used 3G anywhere in the Phoenix, Mesa or Scottsdale area, just Edge. There may be other modes and frequencies but I haven't been able to verify them.

-You bought a new Exhibit II from T-Mobile.
-It doesn't get 3G outside of the store.
-Your other T-Mobile compatible device gets 3G outside of the store.
-You've owned this same Exhibit II which hasn't been connecting to 3G for months.
On these points alone, am I understanding you correctly?

What T-Mobile calls 4G is actually 3G with improvements to the backhaul as well as the radios on the phones - where T-Mobile has 4G, it also has 3G.
The point of my last post was to make it obvious that you have a defective phone. I shouldn't have assumed you would figure it as you haven't figured it out in the months you've owned a phone that obviously has reception issues.

In case you're not trolling:
-Your phone has hardware defects that are affecting how well it connects to 3G.
-The fact that you get reception in stores is likely because stores have signal boosters.
-Retail employees are idiots. They are trained to use the products just enough to sell them (read: not much) and aren't paid enough to attract anyone with half a brain to the position. Walk a block away from the store and show them that your phone doesn't connect to 3G (or "4G" if you still want to call it that).

Both of you are feeling like you're trolling.
It may be a tower issue or your phone. The only way to check is to use another phone.
Looking at the Specs for the 4 versions and if you live in North America and use GSM the T889 seems to be your best choice. You get all North American HSPA bands and DC-HSPA 42Mbps not just HSPA 21Mbps as well as North American 700/1700 LTE.
Looking at the AT&T variant i317 seems we are getting the shaft. You get quad band HSPA only and 2 extra LTE bands you'd never use unless you travel a lot off the continent. My how quickly AT&T put the failed merger behind them.
There are 4 versions of Note:
1. International (+LTE): SGH-7100 / SGH -7105
2. SGH-i317 : ATT+(Rogers+Bell + Telus): HSPA 850/900/1900/2100, LTE: 700/850/1700/1900
3. SCH-i605 : CDMA + LTE 700
4. SGH-T889 : T-Mobile+Mobilicity+Wind : HSPA: 850/900/1700/1900/2100, LTE: 700, 1700
So why does T-Mobile's get DC-HSPA and not the other 2 GSM variants?
So do you know how to unlock the sim slot on this. i use simple mobile and straight talk but I want the t-mobile version because it has hspa+42 and the others dont which I find to be rather stupid. But Simple said I need to unlock it even though it is a t-mo hone and they use their network. Will T-mo unlock it for me if I call them since I am buying it out right.

Can't help you there friend, I'm in Canada. I know T-Mobile used to be pretty good about unlocking devices bought outright but not sure if policies changed. A T-Mobile member should be able to answer that question though.
I've been out of the phone game for awhile, so i'm a little confused. I'm currently on ATT, and as a matter of course, I would pick up there's, but if it doesn't have LTE in the states (I have ATT LTE in my area), then that's just one more reason to switch to T-mobile.
I'm already considering switching due to the cheaper plan and the ability to pick up the phone on a payment plan, which is VERY attractive to me and my current financial situation.

nothing if you have AT&T. The t-mobile one only has an advantage if you use it as an unlocked device on pre-paid carriers like straight talk or simple mobile or solavei. The main difference is that if you use a t-mobile prepaid carrier like simple mobile and get the international note 2 it will be edge/hspa+21 onlyin refarmed, if you get ATT it is edge only unless you live in a 1900 re farmed market then it will only do hsap+21, if you get the t-mobile variant it is hspa+42 and has not active lte for when and if prepaid carriers get access to t-mobile lte when it comes online next year. The other thing is the t-mobile variant is a penta band phone which means it will run at full hspa+ data speed on any carrier. ATT or t-mo.

Ah, so since I have ATT in a LTE area (Phoenix), i'll get LTE (42?) on my phone, and no issues unless I decide I want to switch to a pre-paid carrier? But if I did get the T-mobile version of the phone, I could switch it around and I have more options as far as speed goes. Sound approximately correct?
What if I bought the phone from T-mo and switched it to AT&T? Is that even possible and would it have any pros or cons? (Buying full-price phone from T-mobile on their payment plan, using it on AT&T until my contract was up in Feb, then switching the phone to T-mobile with the cheaper plan?

It has LTE, but the HSPA bands are limited to 21mbps vs the 42 mbps HSPA of the T-Mobile variant (which works with AT&T's network on both LTE and HSPA).
Essentially, a faster HSPA radio, nothing else changes
Does anyone know if there will be modem problems like the Att i717 had when switching to tmobile? We waited a long time for a decent working modem which was a hacked blaze modem that worked the best with limited upload speeds, but great download speeds.
Or will the tmobile variant work like the galaxy nexus pentaband on Att or tmobile OOB? I'm tempted to get the tmobile, but will wait for the price to drop.
Torn due to accessories that now are not compatible with the new noteII.

I am on AT&T. I bought the TMOB Note II and unlocked it on cellunlocker.net. very easy.
I don't get LTE even though the device specs show LTE.
I tried different APNs but it always goes back to the default one on my micro sim.
Any ideas on how to get LTE are welcome!

I don't know if anyone cares, but I purchased the international version of the Galaxy Note II. I currently am using it on AT&T network and I maintain hspa+ the entire time. I work in Dallas, Texas but live 45 miles away, and I have awesome coverage all the time. The reason I post this is because all of you wanting LTE, should know more facts about it. LTE is nice, but it's a battery hog. Granted 4G speeds are nice, but in practicality, HSPA+ is obviously not as fast, but it's pretty danged fast and my battery life is pretty darned good as well.
If you are going to shell out the money for the phone itself, buy the International version. You can get them for around $660 dollars, and the price is dropping every day. Don't spend the same amount on a Carrier branded, bloatware infested phone. Just buy the unbranded one and you will be quite happy, I guarantee it.

Maybe have to wait on the AT&T Note II ROM dump. Then flash it to T-Mobile Note II.

all you have to do is wait like maybe a week or four days, for their system to recognize that you are using the note 2 on their system. then you call them and tell them that you will be going out of the country and they will ask you for your IMEI number and your email. and you will get your unlock code the next day, hope this help you.

You can try this:
1) With phone on, take off back cover and press your SIM card so it releases from the spring. It won't come all the way out as it's blocked by the battery. This seems fine - I didn't bother trying to force it out as I didn't want to break anything...
2) Once you see the message that the SIM card is removed, go to the dialer and dial *#2263#
3) You should see a menu with band selections. The current setting is "Automatic". If you switch to "GSM All", you will be EDGE (2G). If you switch to "WCDMA All", you will be on HSPA+ (3G, though AT&T and others call it 4G) and you will have lte too
4) Press the SIM card back into place until it clicks. For whatever reason the phone will not recognize it until you reboot. Upon reboot you should see your new setting in effect.
Let me know if this works!
So let's clear all of this up. Will the T-Mobile edition work on T-Mobile AND at&t (hspa+) StraightTalk here in the States? Just seemed a bit confusing and that is what I know is my big question. All help is appreciated.

It's my understanding that the T-Mo Note 2 runs on T-Mo's HSPA+42 network while the international runs on ATT's HSPA+21 network but only on T-Mo's 2G network. T-Mo is currently refarming areas of the country so that the international Note 2 will pick up T-Mo's HSPA+ network. I assume they mean T-Mo's HSPA+42 network.
EDIT: This was from a chat session with a T-Mo rep:
Me: So once the 1900Mhz refarming is complete, does that mean I'd have access to your HSPA+42 speeds?
Mary G: Yes, once the process has been complete, you will have the best service about the calls and most especially the data.
Now, we all know how misinformed reps can be but from what I've been reading, this seems to be legit. So my plan is to get the international Note 2. I get HSPA+21 now, an option for T-Mo HSPA+42 later as I know for a fact my area is currently being refarmed, more developer support, and no bloatware.
If I'm wrong about any of this, please someone let me know.
