Gmail app isn't showing 's correctly in from field. - EVO Shift 4G General

Hey guys, I have a bit of an issue here. I've had issues recently with Gmail syncing so I went in and cleared out the application data to get to sync again, which worked. But now any e-mail, where the from field has 's in it, like Papa John's. It instead is showing Papa John's. I've tried clearing cache and dalvik cache on my device and clearing the application data from gmail again but it still shows up. Of course the from field shows up fine on gmail.com. I'm on the Gingerbread stock ROM from x99. Trying to see if anyone has any options before I do a factory reset, thanks .

Have you updated to the newest GMail app? There is a 2.3.5.2 GMail app. I'm not sure if this would work on the stock Gingerbread ROM though.

Yup already on the latest version of gmail.

Go to manage applications -> gmail -> force stop -> clear cache and reopen gmail.
Also try changing the sync time from 4 days to 3 days and run a sync from acounts -> sync -> google -> menu -> "sync now".
If that doesn't work, force stop again, clear cache and clear data and try.
If that doesn't work try running fix permissions from ROM Manager. If that doesn't work try uninstalling and reinstalling GMail.
If that doesn't work try installing the old 2.3.5 version.
I've had it where I was on a call and hit send on an email and gmail would get stuck on "sending.." for that message and couldn't do anything with it. First 2 steps was the only real way to get around it. I wasn't even able to open the message in my outbox and save it as a draft.
Let me know if that helps.

Well I tried all of your suggestions man and still the same thing is happening. I even went as far as to do a factory reset and setup my gmail account and the same thing happened. At this point I'm thinking it must not have anything to do with my phone huh?

Probably. Could you please describe the problem more? Is the phone not adding 's after certain words? screen shot? something?

Well the only place that the 's isn't showing up correctly is in the From field. Everywhere else in the e-mail it'll show up fine. And the only e-mails I get so far with 's in the from field is Papa John's or Wendy's. So instead they'll show up as Papa John's or Wendy's. And when you click on the e-mail, where the from shows up in green it'll look the same.

Hey VICODAN, actually don't worry about it man. I found a thread on the google mobile help forums and it seems google is looking into the issue.

There's a link that explains what it looks like, but like I said don't worry about it, thanks for your assistance .

Gmail sync is busted

My Gmail sync is busted. I am not getting incoming emails nor sending outgoing mails. When i scroll down my old emails, at the point where it starts to load more older ones, I instead get a message "No connection" and "retry" button. Retry is unsuccessful.
When i go into the data and synchronization setting and manually try to sync the gmail, I get a 1-frame-flash on the bottom which flashes me a message saying "Sync is not currently experiencing problems. Please try again later".
I then add a secondary gmail account and it syncs perfectly!! But my primary one doesn't work! I can't remove my primary account and re-add it unless I do a factory reset...which I don't want to do.
I've tried a reboot and it didn't help. Anyone have any ideas?
I've got the same problem today. It seems that it's a server problem.
Server problem, even though a secondary account synced fine?
If I'm not the only one...then that makes me feel better.
I have this issue with WM
I use Google sync with WM device (My N1 should arrive tomorrow) and have had a similar (if not exact) problem. When I receive a mail from a specific sender ([email protected]) 90% of the cases it breaks the sync. I also sync that same account via IMAP on a secondary account in my WM device - just in case.. syncing every 30 minutes.. (that sync works fine) so I can use the IMAP account to delete the problematic mail.. and then, once deleted (or archived if I use the web interface) the problem is gone.
Try to find if there was a mail message you got that caused the problem. it is probably either the last synced mail or the one just after that...
Update:
The sync fixed itself this morning. It started syncing nonstop for a good hour (I'm on ATT Edge too) and I wasn't sure what it was doing, but the end result is I can now get my emails and notifications again.
On a separate note, I also noticed that now in my Gmail app, I can access every email dating back to 9/11/09. That's hundreds of emails. And If I scroll all the way to the bottom, there's no more loading earlier conversations, so 9/11/09 is the farthest back I can access my email without searching.
Does anyone know that there is such a limit to looking into past emails? Also, Anyone know why it doesn't just expose a 15-20 emails at a time like previously? Is it because once the email is exposed, it's cached somewhere and I don't need to load it anymore? If so, I'd love to know where I can delete this cache.
Some other members have experienced a similar issue with no sync. They fixed the broken sync by doing this(and this is how you can clear that cache as well)
Setting->Apps->Manage Apps-> gmail/gmail storage->clear data and cache(if you can, on my G1 I can just clear data, no cache shows)
You will probably just want to clear the gmail storage one, but doing both probably wouldn't be that big of a deal.

On older versions of Android, we could clear the cache on all Google apps... but this isn't available through the Manage Applications screen in 2.1. Not sure why Google took out this feature.. Previously if Gmail stopped synching, we would clear the cache and it would start working again. Hopefully this doesn't become an unfixable issue with 2.1.

They took it out? That sucks! Can you do the clear data at least? And I could swear I read someone with a Nexus One had this issue, and cleared the data or cache for gmail and fixed it... maybe it was in the G1 forum, starting to get confused following both at the same time.

Aha I found it! I may be an Android noob but I can still be useful.
Within Manage Apps, click hit Menu > Filter > All. This will expose all the native apps as well and you can clear your cache till the cows come home. I just found this a minute ago and cleared out my cache for my Gmail, default browser, and Youtube. That felt sooooo good, since I'm such a storage nazi.

Gmail acting weird?

Anyone else notice in the past couple of days.. that the stock gmail app isn't marking read emails as read? So, for example.. when I get a new email and check it on my phone, the gosh darn email that I just opened and read remains unread. Then when another email comes, my phone shows that I have two unread emails. Then, the only way to mark them as read is to actually read them on my computer.
Anyone else?
This happened to my wife before. Go into Settings -> Applications -> Gmail and wipe the data and cache for it. You will have to re-signin then everything should re-sync and start working again.

Im having the same issue as the OP
im running ice glacier 1.1.6 and for the life of me can not get gmail to update the emails on the account...ive tried wiping the data/cache ive tried to update the gmail app and as it stands right now nothing is working...its very frustrating
1.Send email from acct A to acct B
2.Check acct B on phone and read the message and then log out
3.Check acct B on the computer and message that was read on the phone is still "new" on the computer
the above goes for deleting and archiving mails as well
are there any other solutions to this issue...ive been searching the net for an hour and everyone just says delete cache and thats just not working for me
You could always try to wipe cache and dalvik-cache from recovery. Failing that, if you are truly determined to clear things, do a full system wipe (after making a settings backup via Titanium, so you can restore the non-broken parts easily).

Well I also run IG and it works 100% for me. Everyone's silicon is different, though. Are the gapps provided for Cyanogen/Gingerbread compatible with Froyo builds? You might try ripping the mail from that and doing a hard uninstall/reinstall of mail only either by hand or via Titanium.

not sure if the ones from cm7 are compatible...the interesting part is...the problem only seems to happen with personal emails not commercial emails from companies or notifications that are sent by mail
either way...i switched back to cm7 for the time being as i was having a couple other minor issues with IG...may go back at a later time...just cant find a rom that i really dig

ok i may be beating a dead horse here...but i have a question for ya Kline...just cuz its picking at my brain lol
if u receive an email and you check it on your phone and either delete it or just have it marked as read and you immediately check the same account on your computer...the email is deleted or marked read?
im asking cause i think its based on the sync time between the phones gmails acct and the computers gmail acct

My phone and PC seem to lag about 30-60s between each other, but both still stay in sync (lucky me, haha). Maybe it helps I am on WiFi whenever I am at home? Probably a quicker connection to sync via than the cell network.

Wife's Email Stopped working...

My wife has her Evo Shift connected to her AOL email. Since Friday she is no longer getting incoming emails. She can send new emails with no problem. We've tried removing the email account and re-adding it but no luck. All the settings and ports are correct. Any ideas?

1) Go to settings -> accounts + sync -> google -> make sure gmail is checked. Now go back one screen and go to step 2.
2) Make sure background data is on and auto sync is on.
3) Open GMail and hit menu -> refresh
4)If this does not fix the problem go to manage applications -> GMail clear cache, clear data, repeat step 3.
5) If this does not fix the problem open market -> menu -> my apps and see if there is an update for GMail. Install it. If this does not fix the problem go through steps 1 2 3 and 4 again.
6) Open ROM manager and hit fix permissions and repeat step 4 and then go back to step 3. (for rooted users only).
If none of these steps work call Sprint or whoever your provider is.
This will also help with messages stuck in the "sending" state. It's a known bug.
Let me know if you still have issues after doing this.

[Q] Gmail doesn't send and is stuck in outbox

Hey all so I've been using Gmail and this only happens every once in a while, and idk I clear data and everything works again but this time it isn't. The mails I send are stuck in outbox abs don't send no matter what I do. I've cleared data multiple times and uninstalled and reinstalled the app (for some reason it's not a system app in my Rom even after I flashed gapps), and still didn't work. Anyone know how to fix this, cuz it's really annoying.
Thanks!

It's something to do with the app.
There's been times it's jammed and stays in outbox and appears to not have sent but in fact it did.
Seems I remember clearing the cache in the Google app fixes it.

Only wipe data as last resort it takes out all of your personal information as you now know! Removing the cache takes out residual leftover files that you were sending or receiving
If the cache button is ever greyed out that means there's nothing there to remove its already clear.

wiping data for the gmail app doesnt really get rid of your personal data, as it reappears when you open gmail and it syncs. anyways, wiping the data for the gmail app also clears the cache.

yes. only wiping data goes a step further by getting rid of any possible corrupted data in the app, not only cache.

com storage changes my contacts pictures

Hi, on my Wife's Samsung Galaxy S4 (AT&T) Non-Rooted Phone. Her contact Pictures keep changing to a blank Picture. I went on line using a PC and went to her Google Contacts and her pictures of her contacts were there. So I thought it might be a Sync issue..tried syncing and it didn't work...tried restarting, that didn't work...I went to her Application Manager on her phone and cleared the cache and data on each of the following Apps and restarted after each time I cleared the app data/cache, till I found out which one was causing this issue..
CONTACTS
CONTACTS STORAGE
GOOGLE CONTACT SYNC
I don't know what causes this or how I can stop it from happening...I will have to preform this action every 1-2 weeks to correct it, only to have it change again...
I was wondering:
Does anyone else have this issue?
Do you know how to fix it?
Do you know why this keeps happening?
Aside from wiping out here phone and starting it from scratch, (Time consuming) I want to understand the cause behind it first...
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!!!

Yes....they all sync without any issues...she don't have to touch the phone and it automatically does this on it's own..I was thinking it had something to do with AT&T Address Book Sync...but not sure what it could be as COM STORAGE seems to have been the only thing that set it back to normal when I cleared the Cache and Data.....

It could very well be the AT&T program. Freeze it with TiBu, and see if it keeps the correct contact pictures.
