[Q] GPS stopped working after upgrade to Gingerbread - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I went into a T-Mobile store and had an associate upgrade my handset to Gingerbread. Everything works fine except for when I go into Navigation to use GPS. I type in the location where I want to go, but it says, "Searching for GPS..." and then it never finds it. Of course, I'm trying to use it in locations where GPS previously worked fine.
Here's what I've done to try to fix the issue:
1. restart the phone
2. download an app called "GPS Status & Toolbox" It has a tool that allows you to reset your gps data or something like that.
3. factory reset
Does anyone know of something else that I can try?

http://teamroyal.net/gps.html
this is may/may not help.
I would recommend you root and d/l a AOSP rom with new panache radio or similar, but that's another story....

Thanks for the reply, h22aboi. Unfortunately those procedures didn't work either.
I called T-Mobile tonight, and they couldn't give me an answer on how to fix the GPS. But the lady mentioned that others were having the same problem, and they were working on a solution. I asked her how many people were having this problem, and she said ten. That's not exactly a huge number, so I don't want to hold my breath for a fix.
I'm thinking about rooting my phone, but I'm under the impression that I would need to first downgrade to Froyo. I found a guide on how to do that, but it looks really complicated, especially for a total noob like me. I don't even know what an ADB is.

Hey guys, XV6900 newb here trying to enable GPS...

I have been reading around and talking to friends about the Touch phone, and could use a little more assistance on enabling the GPS in my phone. Can someone please point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Robbie
have you upgraded to windows mobile 6.1??
if so, then go to start > settings > Phone > Services tab > make sure location setting is highlighted, click get settings >then make sure it is set to on.
that will make sure that applications are allowed to use your gps signal.
then once you have done that,
open your gps, if you use google maps you have to click menu, use gps.
I have upgraded to the official verizion 6.1 rom. My question is, does gps use data? Is the gps a real gps that connects to satellites or is it some pseudo gps that approximates my location by triangulating distances between my phone and the nearest couple cell towers? I don't have a data plan and don't want an unpleasant suprise on my next bill.

Yes, the Vogue has a real GPS antena. If you read through the forums you'll find verizon users have to do a bit of tweaking to get it working.
It can be confusing, because our phones also support "agps". This stands for assisted gps. AGPS uses cell phone tower triangulation to get a position.
GPS has inherent errors, in the aviation world there is a system called diffrential GPS. This uses a ground based system to correct the time diffrential error in the sattelites for greater accuracy. Without dgps you cannot use the gps inputs for a precision approach, only enroute, terminal and overlay. We use other systems such as vor/dme. This uses ground based "towers" to get a position using radial and distance information. This is very similiar to what agps does.
to answer the question does it use data?
the answer is yes.
it has to have a data connection in order to receive the gps data.
atleast thats my understanding, as a data connection does start and maintain during my gps sessions.

No it shouldn't. The data connection you're seeing is probably initiated by the application that needs the internet for transferring maps like Google maps or MS Live search.
If you load up any independent GPS app that uses locally stored maps like TomTom or Garmin, then it shouldn't initiate any data connections.
thanks method man for correcting me.
i didn't think about it that way. haha.
Also a Newbie
I was wondering whether there was an app that I would need to install on my xv6900 to get the GPS working or do i need an external device like the TomTom Go series to get the GPS up and running.
Any help is much appreciated.
Thankyou

The reason it dont work is because GPS tries to connect one way, i belive its phone as modem. and when you browse the internet, it tries to connect as Sprint PCS.
now i might be wrong in that, but just lisen.
in order to fix it you need to do a registry change. get a free program to edit the registry. like PHM RegEdit.
got it downloaded? installed? good. lets move on.
open it up
click on My Device
+HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
+Comm
+ConnMgr
+Providers
+{7C4B7A38-somethingsomethingsomething}
+Phone as Modem.
go into that setting, make sure that the key AlwaysOn is set to 0
THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART
go down a setting from phone as modem to
+SprintPCS
the key inside doesnt have to be set to Always On, but you can enable it if you want.
now close it up. count to 20 and do a restart on the phone
next time you try to run any GPS app it should work. use GoogleMaps though.
also while you are in here you can go into ConnectionSharing. a key above ConnMgr. and make it so you can use your phone as a modem for your laptop. the option was removed in the 6.1 update. let me know if you wish to know how.

I called Verizon regarding the WM 6.1 upgrade and they told me to go to Microsoft's website and download it. Microsoft says go to the carrier's website. I'm confused. I'm using a Verizon XV6900 running Windows Mobile 6 Professional. Are we talking the same thing? Is there a newer version (6.1) than 6 Professional? If so, where can I get it?
Also, I've read about enabling the internal GPS antenna, which appeals to me, but there is so much info with different instructions, talking about Sprint and Alltel, radios, etc. Is there a good (read: easy) set of instructions for this? Also, a list of the possible problems encountered (function, data loss, etc.)? I don't want to be a pain in the rear, but this is not my specialty. But I could really use the GPS capability with my work (real estate) w/o needing an exterior unit. I currently use a DeLorme bluetooth unit, but its a pain.
Thanks in advance, Jim.

Here is the link to the offical WM6.1 ROM
http://www.pcdphones.com/phone_downloads.aspx?bid=95&cid=1&mid=302&carrier=Verizon Wireless
1. sync your phone with Outlook. You will loose everything on your phone when you flash the new ROM. Files on your memory card will be safe.
2. Unlock your phone with 2.31 & refer to the links below.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=20370
http://www.atwistedweb.com/xv6900/index.html
3. connect your phone to your computer via activesync & run the ROM file you download. Simply follow the instructions.
4. Your phone will hard reset once the flash is complete. You will have to align the screen & such. The very last screen will ask you to tap the screen to begin using your device. You have to be ready to soft reset your phone as soon as you tap the screen. DO NOT LET THE CUSTOMIZATIONS RUN OR YOU WILL BE SCREWED FOR SURE.
5.Settings--->Phone--->Services Tab select location settings & then hit the get settings button. Make sure Location On is selected.
6. Download the Holus GPS viewer & install.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=434408&highlight=holux+gps+viewer
post #3
7. Once the GPS viewer open hit the scan button. This will tell you what port & at what baud you GPS is at. It should be com 4 @ 4800.
8. Hit the open GPS button & hopefully you will get a lock.
phone keeps scanning for satellites
Is this normal? The GPS program ran and continues to search for satellites. Its alomst like it can't find any. I ran it just the way you listed. Anything else I can try?
If you are using Holux GPS viewer and you see red dots then be happy your GPS is working. Usually first lock takes longer. try it on an open place hopefully you will get a lock. The red dots you see on Holux are the satellites that your GPS is seeing, Once it gets a lock you will see blue dots and that's a fix. If it continues to flash red dots, I would try closing and opening port once, that wud restart the GPS.
Once you get a lock, use any 3rd party software like Garmin Mobile XT or Tomtom Navigator 7 if you don't have a data plan. If you have a dataplan then you can use goolemaps too.
Hope it helps..

No that isn't true at all,
I have both Tomtom and Igo with map files on the sd card. The phone needs the internet to get the agps information otherwise the GPS programs can't get a lock. It doesn't use much adata at all as I was roaming in the states (from canada) for around 10 days , I used the gps everyday and was only charged under $3 for the whole 10 days.

Here is the update you are looking for, now.... For the love of the lord, DO NOT LET CUSTOMIZATION RUN!!!
Update your device as directed in the file, when the device updates and restarts, you will see a message that says something like "Running Customization in... 3,2,1 Seconds" or something like that, when you see that, stick the stylus in the hole at the bottom of the device and you will avoid a big pain in the @ss.
EDIT: Oops, i'm too late LOL, didn't refresh thepage while searching the update.
Can't get a lock
I just followed all the steps and installed GPS viewer and could not get a lock. I used the Verizon MR1 rom. Since that did not work I tried installing Valhalla GPS Server to see if that would help. No luck. Any Ideas?

I have data blocked on my phone and the GPS worked fine up until about a month ago. Whatever Verizon did blocked my GPS and I have not been able to get is working since. I can still run GPS viewer and see satellites but I can't get a fix on them.
I have everything working now. Thanks.
Just so I have it straight...
When I unlock the phone with 2.31, do I let customizations run? The ppcgeeks thread doesn't specify, but the atwistedweb thread says let them run. What does 2.31 do? Just unlock the phone so I can install the next ROM? Also, the ppc post talks about disabling USB while the other does not. Is there a preference?
When I install the new WM6.1 ROM, the atwistedweb post says to install it from the SD card, while the this thread says via USB. Once again, any preference?
I understand not to let the customizations run for this ROM and by putting the stylus in the bottom hole it resets the machine. After it comes up again, will the phone be (should be) upgraded and ready to use?
Lastly, if my phone gets "bricked" (I guess that means it turns into a battery powered paperweight), you guy can help me out, right?
Man, all of this just to get GPS and Verizon service. Still nervous! And Verizon won't shut my service off or stop tech support?
Thanks again. Trying to get all the info up front so I don't have to later. Jim

Make sure you have backed up everything. First you need to unlock with the .40 unlocker. Then flash to the sprint pre-GPS ROM (This will downgrade your radio which is said to be dangerous but I have never heard of anyone hurting their phone while doing it correctly. This will also require you to call Verizon and get a new A-key. If they ask you what happened just tell them that you had to hard reset your device because of a bad program. Go through all of their steps and it will all get fixed. You have to call Verizon because you wont be able to make calls.) DO NOT LET CUSTOMIZATIONS RUN! You'll know they're about to run beacuse there will be a pop up saying they're going to run in 3 seconds (or something like that). As soon as you see that pop up stick your stylus in the reset hole. Then unlock with the 2.31 unlocker. After you use this unlocker you wont have to unlock again. Ok now you flash back to the Verizon MR1 ROM. DO NOT LET CUSTOMIZATIONS RUN! Once again you'll know they're about to run beacuse there will be a pop up saying they're going to run in 3 seconds (or something like that). Now after you do this your GPS should be working but I was never able to get it to work with the Verizon MR1 ROM. So I recommend using NSFFAN's 6.5 ROM. Now when I unlock and flash ROM's I don't disable the USB thing your talking about. I also flash everything through my computer (USB) and not through the SD card. There is a small chance you can brick your phone but if you do everything carefully and correctly it's a very very small chance. Just make sure you are doing everything right before moving on to each next step. If a phone is bricked I don't think it can be recovered but i'm not 100% sure. Lots of times when there are problems though it's not a bricked phone and just a glitch so if you have anything that doesn't seem right just come on here and ask for help. Verizon won't do anything with your service except fix your phone like I said earlier unless you tell them what your actually doing. I don't know what happens then and I don't want to find out.. What they don't know won't hurt them Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or need any help.

Recuring XV-6800 issues (keyboard, resetting)

I thought I knew the meaning of "a love/hate relationship" until I got the Verizon XV-6800. I love having a syncing calendar & contact list, Office Mobile, WiFi tethering with WMwifiRouter, & all of the other software available for the Windows Mobile OS. Unfortunately I hate the durability of the phone. It seems it can't even stand up to daily use. I'm now on my sixth replacement which I've had for 5 weeks now. Suddenly it's having the same problem the 2 phones prior to this one had; dropping keys, not responding to input (keyboard or on screen,) & randomly resetting upon hitting the power button.
I'm posting this here not just to complain somewhere, but more to see if anyone has had any similar issues or has any recommendations. I doubt these problems are the hardware, so I'm starting to wonder if anyone may have dealt with similar problems by flashing a new rom. I've considered it for GPS functionality, but if it would solve these issues then I'd definitely be all for it.
It is likely a hardware problem. The mogul a becoming way outdated. I would upgrade if you dont have gps abilities. I would think that means you have WM 6.0 is is old itself. What is your carrier. Please update it in your profile so help is easier to come by.
Alright, updated that. I'm with Verizon. It's really annoying to watch them lock down GPS on their phones, only to change their mind, and open it up on other phones just leaving XV-6800 users hanging.
Gps is easy to get going if you have a data package. Not as easy if you don't have one. I can help you get gps if you need it. Also what is your rom version under device information.
Ya, I've got the data package, and I've had GPS in the past using Valhalla (until VZW shut it down.) I'd love to have it back! It looks like I'm running 5.2.19212 (Build 19212.1.0.3)
If you had vahalla before then you have MR1/2 then it is easy. Just install the serf cab for vahalla then *22899 and gps works again. This assumes you have vahalla already installed. If not reinstall vahalla first then *22899. Then serf cab then *22899. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3555579&postcount=703
Let me know how it works.
As I said in my initial post, I've replaced this phone many times. The last phone that ran GPS was maybe 3 devices back. At the time I had flashed that to MR1 & windows 6.1. Since then each replacement phone has come to me with WM6 loaded. My current one says 6.1, is it a fair assumption that this has MR1? I guess I need to reinstall the Valhalla stuff as you mentioned. I'm going to get started on that process. Where's the best place to find the Valhalla cab to get started?
If you see under rom version:3.57.605.1 or 3.57.605.2 then you have MR1 or MR2. You are then ok to install the vahalla cab the serf cab using *22899 after each install.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2936378&postcount=17
Ok, I'm using 3.57.605.2. I did install as you said; Valhalla, *22899, Serf, *22899, check location settings, check for active data connection. All successful, but no fix. Any suggestions? (I've been reading some other posts, and I'm afraid I'm running into the same problems.) Are there additional steps I need to be following?
I suggest you use HTC gps tool or gps viewer to check your lock status. Do you see any satellites come up under satellite view? Are you outside or near a window? And your location is turned on from 911 only correct?
No, it's still not getting a fix. Location is on, and the data connection is active. Still nothing. Are there any other steps I should try. I was reading some additional steps on the wiki...
I see that your running DCD 3.3.4 & 3.42.40. Since I've got this keyboard issue as well might that be another way to fix the GPS issue and simultaneously also the keyboard issue?
A new rom wont fix a bad keyboard. I suggest a hard reset and then install vahalla, then serf, then gps software. Then checking for lock. I have done this before so I know it works. Just for kicks try the vahalla cab attached because the link I provided could be different. I couldnt find a link for my version. Also I will ask again did you see any satellites under the satellite view for either gps software(blinking red dots).
The keyboard works fine at times; right now for example... I think the problem is software based. I'm just looking for a really clear how to on the flashing process.
I'll try working with the Valhalla cab you supplied, as I'm not sure if the version I used was the correct version. I know there's no uninstall for the valhalla cab, are ther certain files I should delete or just install over the old one?
Ok first i doubt it is software issue. Second why not just get another replacement handset, they are free. I dont know if installing the other vahalla over will work. That is why I suggested a hard reset. But if you dont want to do that now just get a another replacement and start with them on it.

Is Usb tethering still working in 2.1?

Hi
Just tried to use usb tethering for the 1st time since 2.1 update.
All still looks like its working but no internet access. Tried under Linux on the same pc that always worked under 1.5
Also tried it on xp although I have never used it on there before I got the same kind of symptoms. Itooks like its all working but no internet, no pings, no nslookup.
So..... can someone try it and let me know if its working for you.
I am on T-Mobile UK. Ota 2.1 update, non rooted, stock Rom.
Thanks
I have exactly the same problem. I have spoken to TMob UK support who have not yet managed to solve it.
I'm wondering if they've not set up the phone right in the 2.1 update.
Glad its not just me. I will report it tomorrow as well.
I have a mate with a desire on tmob - will do a side by side with him tomorrow (and confirm his is working) and see if it is just settings - although it feels like a deeper problem to me.
I'll post findings.
Same here - tethering works fine on my Desire, but the missus Hero doesn't work - hoping for some resolution soon
Just moved house so am without internet for the next week, so tethering is bloody useful right about now!
Have put a 2.2 rom onto my Desire and am using WiFi tethering for now, but doesn't help when I'm not in...
If you are rooted, there is an app that works fine.
But custom roms don't have this issue afaik. VillainROM 12 works fine with tether, as I had to use it at work to test external connectivity to a system.
It's an option and one I will look into.
It worked fine under 1.5 and so far its the only thing that us causing me an issue.
T mobile tech support were able to reproduce, and in their testing they found a factory reset fixed the problem - I have confirmed (as has another user over on the tmobile forums).
Gave me an excuse to clear up the rubbish that had accumulated on phone.
All working now.
its working fine for me :/

and me, just done the Orange OTA 2.1 update and tethering works fine on the phone right after the update... if you need to factory reset to get it working it must be something you have installed on the phone.
Or maybe tmobile did something different to orange. Or maybe the radio roms are different.
Was quite a few tmob users and tmob support so if it was a rogue app then it was a fairly common one
Either way. It's working now.
Wish all problems were resolved as.simply.
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
I certainly think it has something to do with the installed apps on the phone after the update else why would a factory reset solve it, its not the Rom that is the problem... I take it you had heavily customized your phone.
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
Actually no- 5 apps, lastfm, xda, facebook, ambling audio book reader and handcent sms - restore took less than 5 minutes after factory reset, all contacts and calendar info on google.
Given that the functions like handing out dhcp address worked, it was fundamentally was "all there" I can easily imagine a startup routine that says something like
if file exists "some config file" then leave it alone
else make a new one
When you reboot, config file exists so leave it alone in, when factory reset - file doesn't exist, make a new one.
Perhaps the key thing is I was a heavy user of tethering before the update, perhaps when I did the upgrade I forgot to "stop" tethering and just pulled the cable - can't remember, so maybe I had a config file/param that the newer kernel, ip stack etc. didn't expect to see and didn't handle well.
The key thing about factory reset isn't the rom I agree, the code is the code - but it's the wiping of the configuration and volatile data - something got broken for me, and the guys at tmobile, and about 5 other users who reported the same problem - so whilst it obviously works for some without a reset, equally it didn't for others - for at least 3 of us (2 end users and 1 at tmobile) a reset was needed.
If it was a one off, absolutely agree, it must have just been me/my setup - but it wasn't an isolated case.
Personally, I was surprised when the 2.1 update didn't wipe the phone, I was expecting it - so in my case no real problem once suggested to me - others might have more dependency on the installed apps and config but for me this was an easy fix.
Either way, it's back working now - so if it works without a reset - great, and if it doesn't work, a reset looks to fix it - so great as well.

[Q] Newbie questions

I just got a Samsung Vibrant yesterday from a 3rd party, and I'm very excited. I know I need to read a lot on this site, but since this is my 1st smartphone, please forgive my basic/naive questions, be gentle on me, and give me some directions so that I won't have to walk in the darkness.
1) I haven't done anything essential to the phone yet, and I'm considering to root, unlock and the phone, and upgrade from 2.1-update1 to 2.2. Which one should I start first, root, unlock, or upgrade? Even though I haven't done much on the phone, do I still need to go through the backup before rooting?
2) Between the IMEI and S/N barcodes, there is '10.10' on the phone which I assume is the manufacture time of Oct. 2010. Would the GPS 'fix' be done with my phone (Build Number: Eclair.UVJI6)? Considering the amount of complaints about the GPS on Samsung Vibrant, how does the GPS work with offline applications like CoPilot? Where should I put the CoPilot Map, in internal or external SD?
3) If I want to make phone calls through WIFI connections without eating up my minutes, what kind of VOIP combination should I consider? Google Voice?
4) What web browser do you recommend? Other nice applications should I put in?
5) When I select Avatar, it says "File not found". Is it supposed to be in the external SD (which seems empty)? Where can I get the file?
Thanks a lot for your help!
I would suggest reading the bible in the Development section. or this
get the proper drivers here.
root with Superoneclick found here. There is another version floating around that works better that is called SuperOneClick for Froyo.
fix 3e recovery (if running stock froyo) software found here runs from your computer with your phone connected and usb debugging turned on.
download the Clockwork Recovery Unlock.zip from either Rom Manager or here (put it in your phones internal SD root)
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TeamWhiskey's Rom Bionix-V 1.2.1 found here
But I would suggest getting to know your Vibrant/android phone if you have never owned one first.
Edit: Calling over wifi uses your plan's minutes. Its meant for poor reception areas where you might have wifi with broadband internet.
Edit2: Most people get rid of the "Avatar" its just the movie and takes up space. I believe it should be on the SD card that came with the phone.
Congrats on the phone
1st is to root it you can use the super-one-click, like the previous post said. There are other rooting but this one is very easy
After that, Read up on the roms the Axura, Trigger, Einherjar, and Bionix are all fine and depending on your need you have really great choices, the Axura has remarkable battery life, for example. So do the reading on which you would like. Once you pick one flash it. Then get Rom manager and Titanium back up. Free from the app store. Then you can start playing. Should you decide that you do not like or just want to try another rom, you can flash over the last most times with out problems. One thing (read the bible) if you do flash over one of the custom roms you will need to disable the voodoo lagfix. This is actually a file conversion. So Read up on that as well. Hope that helps you.

Click to collapse
There is the super one click or you can get a copy of the update folder that roots the phone.... place it on the internal sd card go to recovery and install update...... that also will do it. LOOK IN THE STICKY/BIBLE
Thanks a lot for the great help, FlyingPoo and oka1! I really appreciate it.
A couple of more newbie questions:
1) When making phone calls, sometimes I need to key in some options after the phone is connected (for example, when you call a customer service 800 number). How can I bring up a on-screen keyboard when the phone is already connected?
2) It seems my Samsung Vibrant has much weaker WIFI reception than my Mac laptop, and I have to bring the phone closer to the router to get detectable WIFI signal. Is there anyway I can boost the phone's reception capability?
Thanks a lot!

GPS not found on navigation apps

So, i can get a fix for my location and the apps which need location (like uber) works fine. But when i need navigaton like Waze or GMaps it simply doesnt get a signal, it says locating forever. I already used GPS Status toolbox to clear AGPS data and didnt work (the App doesnt locate a signal also). i tried TopNTP and didnt work.
Ive been having this issue for a couple of months i think, that is BEFORE i unlocked and rooted my phone for the first time ever (using DU ROM latest version, rooted and unlocked using NRT). Since i basically didnt used navigation i cant say for sure. But i think it was around the same time i changed my display on a cell shop, so maybe its a hardware issue?
Thanks for the help
