Like... never??? When I bought my DHD I was like "I've had a mobile with a front facing camera for 5 years and actually have used it less than 5 times. So I can go along with the missing front camera." The only way to send video is with the rear camera, which as far as I know supports only higt resolution vidos. If it could capturre video at 640x480 @30fps that would be great for video talk, but only on high speed connection, cause of the data transfer.

Good news, finally I can see my partner again
As for video recording... Could be very difficult on our beloved DHDs. Without a front facing camera I would loose the "can see" part just gained with this update. However... If the rear facing camera could be used, you could hold your device in front of a mirror to see the screen (and your partner) again
Would be very interested in seeing traffic statistics...

Nice, hope I can use rear camera for video on DHD.

Video Recording?

Hi Guys,
I am guessing the HD2 doesn't come with video recording (strange for a top smartphone as this) but is there any chance of a software solution coming in the future that might support this feature?
cheers,

Why do you guess this....Are you talking about 3g video calls, then no..
I`m sure you`ll be able to take videos though...
aren't there videos taken with HD2 floating around in youtube?
Yes there are. And yes, HD2 has video recording. The "guesses" come from the official spec sheet where video recording isn't mentioned I think.
seriously, there's a thread on the front page about video playback...

I think you're confused by the Iphone - until recently it didn't support video recording - as far as I know, winmo has always had that when a camera is installed?
but just to set this straight, what do you mean with video recording?
start the camera and record a video and save to memory card or something else?

Because almost every phones (except apple) imaginable in the last 5 years have had video recording? A cheap $25 samsung slider has video recording, so what makes you think a high-end $800-900 phone doesnt come with one? That's like asking if a new Ferrari 458 will be expensive...

Not to sound like a troll, but as a genuine comment knowing people who had the iPhone as their first "proper" smartphone, they've been genuinely surprised that pretty much every other camera-containing smartphone ever made has video recording and mms (copy and paste/multitasking/etc less so).
Just wanted to say that some people have to cut the attitude, I was only asking a question! and the reason I thought it didn't come with video recording is because a preview said as much and I thought it was strange. This will be my first smartphone so give me a break!

There is one video sample here. It's not as bad as some, but it's no dedicated video camera.

Is 720P Important to You?

Hey guys, quick question for nexus one users. Do you guys consider taking 720p video important? I know you could do the 720p hack, but the quality is so-so with alot of stuttering. Do you guys find vid recording a selling point or just a perk thats not really necessary.

Yes i use it and love it. i find the micro stuttering is from a slow sd card. It wasn't a selling point for me since its not a stock feature

if you turn off auto focus, it's pretty good. i call 720p a good selling point, and from now on a must have for a phone.

*lol, like the vid!
I'd trade 720p for better quality pictures, so no, it's not that important to me, but nice to have nevertheless.
forgot to put in the reason why im asking.
i love the vanilla UI and i LOVE (you have no idea) the Nexus One styling. This is the phone i wanted for a really long time. But the thing is, the nexus one is lacking in apps (one in particular that i play everyday, bejewled blitz) and its lacking in the HD recording department (and touch to focus). Im trying to decide if those two things are worth going back to the iphone. The ironic thing is, i dont even take videos on the iphone. i think its the fact that its nice to have.
being stuck in the middle blows.
CM6 video has touch to focus and continuous auto-focus in video.

You're comparing a year old phone with a few months old phone...not working, compare it with the 3Gs!
I don't have an iPhone 4 but I'm pretty sure the iPhone has better video/picture quality than the Nexus
It's not that important to me now, but may be in the near future...
It is not as good as the iPhone 4's but the Nexus One is an older, less powerful phone. The video quality is adequate.

thanks for the replies guys. i guess i'll use the nexus one as a primary phone and carry the iphone if i go places i need to record videos.
i would just like some mod that can enable the auto focus when im recording something
not really important but always good to have.. loving cm6.1rc1
I've used the video capabilities exactly one time.
Don't think that 720p would do anything for me.

I can do that in CM6 ... if I understand you right. I'm able to change focus method in the middle of the recording.
I agree with some of the posts here.
I don't care about the 720p recording but it's good to have it but I'd also definetly trade it for better quality on my photos

Desire HD camera sensor.

Hello guys...
I have DHD rooted so I was searching some files with root explorer and I found this:
In sys/android_camera there is a file with name sensor.
So I opened this file with Root Explorer (View as text) and inside I saw the model of camera sensor that DHD uses and it's the OmniVision ov8810 8M...
After a little search in the web I found the official description of this sensor and you can find it here http://www.ovt.com/products/sensor.php?id=61#specifications.
From the Product Specifications you can see that the sensor can take video at 1080p.
So I assumed that we have the hardware but we miss the software...
Am I right???
Interesting. It can even take 720p in 60FPS, which would be veeery nice.
Ohh, interesting...
This does not surprise me. HTC is well-known for hampering their cameras. Maybe in an OTA later on or some crafty XDAer will check this out. I suggest PM'ing the ones who got 720p on the various other phones so they can check this out.
By the way, if my thoughts are correct and my eyes don't fool me, it says "10 @ Full"... even though I'm thinking this is full 8mp @ 10fps recording, this just does not seem real. No way in hell.
1080p? Honestly? I mean, it barely manages to capture [email protected]*, let alone [email protected], not to mention 1080p. I know DHD is one of the most powerful phone today, but I seriously doubt it has enough grunt to record at anything over 720p. Of course, I would be very glad if I could be proven wrong, but I'm affraid it won't happen .
Most of all, I would like to see it record video in [email protected] properly, especially in low(ish) light conditions.
On the brighter side, the image sensor does seem to be able to record in [email protected], [email protected] or indeed 10fps in full res, but I imagine it would require pretty fast memory card.
*Or it could be just stock SD card write speed limitation, but I doubt it.
gsmarena.com has been bashing the DHD's camera, in their latest review of the SE arc they even say that DHD is worthy of a true 8 megapixel camera comparison
i'm not on the latest rom so i can't tell if they've really made any improvements on the camera quality and i haven't been taking enough pictures to judge but i think there's no point in having 1080*60fps if the quality of the videos is ****

DHD can't match the quality of my 7mp camera. Lenses make all the difference, megapixels alone are pretty useless.

I use a custom ROM that is based in 1.72 and I have a class10 MicroSD and the video on 720p is very good with no lags...
So the thing I mentioned in first post is that the hardware seems to be capable to shoot in 30 @ 1080p.
No if the phone with all other parts is capable is another thing that some developers could answer...

I would certainly like to see how the phone would handle 1080p recording lol, just for fun.

[Q] Skype video chat with Droid 2

I just tried searching the forum to see if Skype video chat is possible with a D2. I didn't have any success and I am sorry if this question has already been answered!
It looks like my phone has a front facing camera but when I log in to Skype, video chat is not an option. Is it possible?
Thanks for your help!

The Skype app, contrary to what most people would obviously assume, does not feature any kind of video chatting/calling feature. You are also most likely confusing the notification LED with a front-facing camera.
There is a free app on the Market, though, that provides video chatting capability; it's called Tango. I've tried it several times, and while it's a bit awkward video chatting with cameras on the back of both phones, it still works well enough that I can both see and hear the person I'm calling. The only annoyance I've had with the app so far is the noticeable sound delay, and it has some mixed overall reviews, but it's the only video calling app that seems to be viable.
Tango works alright. Try using it while standing in front of a mirror and it works pretty well on D2

Poor video recording :(

I really love the phone and especially its photo capabilities.
Yet the video lags while recording are really bad.
Here a random unedited testvideo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NbXSOsVaE0
At the end theres no sound which probably results from the freezing where no sound is recorded.
Therefore the video is longer than the recorded sound.
I just checked and firmware is up to date, battery was full & taskkiller emptied RAM before recording.
Hope there is a fix incoming

Well, with stabilization on you get distortion as the frame moves, but it's hardly noticeable. Beats a jerky video.

It destroys the image with to much compression. Usually ends up with a more blurry pic.
But im speaking from the Xperia X10, not the Arc. But I could only assume its the same as of now.
ive just replaced the memory card on my arc to a 16gb kingston class 4.....seems marginally better with regards to video stutter...need to run a few more tests first though.

Yeah that a **** video dude..I ve got the same problem..The video lags a lot..I dont know whether there is a solution..hopefully a 3rd party app??
My mum told me to record my little brother's rehearsal for the regional artistic cycling tournament (he got silver btw ) cuz she was at work .The vid lagged so badly, also with the 5 sec freezing and some random 1 sec freezing. The whole performance is only about 10 min. I tried with and without image stabilization and some other settings as I was desperate to get it recording. In the end I asked my brother to do it again and used the milestone(Droid) from the coach to record it.
I have the fragments of the recording on my arc if anyones interested
Not that I care much of the performance as its his first year, but my mum was angry and laughing at my phone.
Bottom line: Awesome cam but useless videorecording.
Sony should come up with something..Video recording is ****.. :S
