Say no to themed roms. - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I am seriously thinking of starting a campaign here on xda against themed roms.
I won't start blaming anyone or calling out names, but themeing a rom is a bad thing.
Here is why:
1. Generally, miui and sense are well built and nicely designed.
2. Customizing a rom is personalizing it to your taste and your needs (modified apk's with graphics or color change )
3. Generally, the customizations are a cheesy combination of fonts and colors that really don't go that well together and imho sometimes even present usability issues (futuristic font that looks good bad at the size it is used in the UI) .
Currently, there are 3 scenarios:
1. Themed rom
2. Themed rom with an update package to revert to stock ( one that doesn't fully work )
3. Themed rom with an update package to revert to stock
What I would suggest, to keep the pleasure of customization is to include your customization as an update package rather than having the stock look be an update package.
If I will observe more people that think like me, I have a signature banner campaign in mind, that would link to this discussion.

ohh, you are so right
+1

Yap.. you're 100 percent right..
It annoys me to always replace the skinned files with stock files.. so save me some time!

amen...........

Good call.

well, i agree with you. 99% of all themes are ruining the roms look. Like you allready said, sense and miui roms look very nice as stock, but they often get ruined by weird themes. BUT i dont think, you could force the devs not to theme their roms.

finally!
+1
totally agree

there are plenty of non themed roms.. if someone wants to make a themed rom and you dont like it, dont use it..
i personally use the bluetopia desire HD themed rom and i love it.

At the end of the day...YOU ARE GETTING THESE ROMS FOR FREE!!!!
Can you imagine if they charged you for a one-on-one service, where you discussed what you want etc and how you want it to look...as in called to his buiness or office and paid the going rate per hour!!!!!!!
hundreds of pounds or dollars etc!!!!
I reckon you should be EXTREMELY greatful that u ain't stuck with windows mobile, coz if you were, i can guarantee, you'd be saying, or begging......
......"oh, please devs, please come back, i don't care if it's pink blue or Adolf Hitler Icons everywhere, pleasseeee, i need my android on my HD2"
Simple - if you don't like a theme, GO USE SOMEBODY ELSES ROM.
OR
Even better, LEARN how to make your own ROMS...should only take you a few years of hard graft - maybe then you could appreciate the hard bloody work Devs put in here.
GEEZ - what a cheek whinging about themes etc...LOL

@aarons6 & @matthew33
That's exactly why customisations should be optional.
It's enough to read the threads of customised rom to find out that there are plenty of people
that are put in the position of choosing between the rom they like with enforced customizations and other stock roms that aren't that well made.
Having the visual tweaks as an optional pack, will attract more users and generate mor revenue in the end. It's that simple.

What revenue you were talking about?
Just keep in mind that those roms with heavy theme and customization are personal roms, well, they most are personal rom, they are modified to their taste and just want to share with us, if you dont like it, just ignore and move on....
On the other hand if you thinking of starting a campaign against big @ss signature, sign me in, my fingers work twice as hard to see the next post because of that...

Why the need for dozens of ROMS?

My understanding is that a cooked rom is a rom that has lots of bit's taken out and then cabs etc put back to make the HD2 run with better performance etc.
But there are so many roms on here, that it has become confusing as to which rom to put on my device. Also what happens when a new legit rom from HTC comes out - doesnt that mean that all the cooking starts again and we end up with thousands of roms?
I would have thought that the additional software installations after installing a new ROM to get the phone in a decent state would put most people off lol.
This is not a dig btw - i have installed a cooked rom, but i think the forum needs to be maybe reshaped a little more i.e. another category with each rom version.
Agree. Would like to see some kind of categories, maybe one for "Featured ROMs", they are cool, gives a hint of what will come, but they might be unstable. One category for ROMs really close to stock, but with minor changes...
i totall agree.. i am a new member as you can see on my number of posts.. i would really like to get to know which rom update is for what and which works best with htc hd2.
need help.
Just do some more research and find what you like.. and use it very often.
Custom Roms are for everybody and each chef has his own kitchen.. and receipe. Someone goes for speed the other for stability.. and some other chef again for a better layout.
I agree sometimes it is difiicullt to see what features are added and to compare which rom suites your needs best, but you could filter it all for you self. Select all Roms that have your interest and filter down to 2 or 3 Roms... then flash those 2 or 3 roms and try them for a few days. You will able to tell which one is best for you
It's up to you which one you choose.. so for lazy people who do not want to search.. stick to the shipped Roms

+1 for this one.
It's ur own thing!
Well, All these roms are the personal preference of the maker with some feedback and input from the users. The only way is to decide is read the descriptions and perhaps see what apps are included and mainly, which version of windows mobile (all 6.5 but some the newer 6.5.3(?) version with the taskbar at the bottom and some fingerfriendly stuff), which version of manilla (2.5.1922 is the newest with a document tab but some bugs), etc.
The rest is just a matter of personal preference and trying.
It has always been like this and it works wonderfully... newbs that come here and say this kind of stuff should first try to understand how this forum works and WHY there are so many roms..
Like i said - i agree on the principle of it - but why not create sub forums with rom versions etc so the layout is easier. Being called a newbie because i havn't posted many threads is rather insulting
I really love the way it is now. It gives you freedom to choose, and make your device more custom. I would however like to see alot of cooks go together and create "the perfect rom".. Some cooks go for stabillty, others for speed, someone for visuals. Combine all those chefs recepies and you would have one fantastic rom i believe
I agree with Da9L!
If you spend more time with xda-devs you will see a structure. If i need a WM 6.5.3 ROM i search only for the Sys.Build (28xxx). Very easy.
1. I like having the choice between many different ROMs..you simply have to see what fits your needs the best.
2. Most people stick to their favorite cook because they have similar "taste" and usually you stick with it.
we have many 5-star cooks here and its hard to single out ONE great ROM. There is no universal solution so take a close look at the ROM description and see whats added and removed, look at the bugs and changelogs, the builds and decide if it might be your taste.
i love changing roms in search of features speed and new layouts.. but i always forget which rom was on which version when i last tried it . and now especially with new and different versions of manila and htcsense it is getting a bit of confusing...
I wish if there is a single chart of all roms where they keep atleast some basic information...
like
Name of ROM -- LAST UPDATED-- OS VERSION-- MANILA Version -- Changelog etc
something like this (except its for ANDROID ROMS)
http://db.androidspin.com/android_build_information.asp
tell me what you guys think of this....

True...
But with a menu, you have categories. "Main meals" (full featured rom?) "starters" (clean rom without manila or any addons?)
You just have to have a look at this forum

You just had to read and learn
the thread title is very misleading based on what the TS has to say
in any case, the current layout is fine. i do not think it is very "efficient" to keep going down sub-menus
It would be nice to have a XDA market were al ROMS and stuff can be rated, that would certainly sort things out
Personally I wish there were more ROMs! Like someone said, this is how its always been, this is how it is, and this is how it will always be.
It would be good if the chefs stuck to the official thread naming scheme.
I was gonna provide a link to it, but cant find it now

The only one that can rate the best rom for you is you
What might be the case
Many of the ROM's have no layout customizations and vary
often only a little in included applications, tweaks/driver patches.
If a new user installs a couple of ROM's , chances
are differences aren't all that big, and the question arises, what's the point ?
If one looks at the older devices, one can see an almost vulgair
choice of styled, tweaked and pimped beyond recognition ROM's.
I mean the ROM's where you open the default games folder and there's 10 games, 19 great themes to choose from, 6 clocks, and what's more.
The fact those ROM's aren't available (yet) could be strange to people relatively new to XDA.
Maybe it's something all different
Edit : forgot to mention Xanitechs Pandora ROM which has "styling" (works like a charm for me)

yes i know the g1 is a basically crap compared to these newer android phones..that doesn't mean devs should just throw it out the window
all most g1 devs do now is wait for a cyanogen rom to come out and then tweek it..
i mean there is nothing wrong with that but it makes the whole point of developing your own stuff pointless. and if im correct the g1 has soo many types on roms that are out there that were just thrown away.
for example: kings espresso rom which is light then the slide rom..everybody is working on the slide one but why isnt anyone trying to work on the espresso rom
and then the froyo roms, jubeh started with one..chiefz said he was making one..they both scarped there roms to wait for cyanogen
jcarrz and the aria rom..he said he would try to make one..a few days later he comes back..uploads the the boot.img and some other files and basically says figure it out
im not dev..and i greatly appreciate the work devs do..and im well aware is not piece of cake..but what happened to the friendly competitiveness that use to be here..what happened to devs making roms to try something different..
p.s. am i the only one who hates the rounded edges on cyanogen mods lol..they make me feel crazy

My rom is finished on my end, and it works just as I like it. I just can't be bothered with a community that wants different things, some of which don't make any flippin sense.
I feel CM covers a lot of bases, bloated as it is, but us who rush "tastes" do it exactly for that, a "taste" (sometimes I will finish a rom like I did with Tiny Hero).
I personally lack the knowledge to fix as many things as the CM team does around the clock (and, AFAIK, there's only one of me compared to a team of at least 8 in CM), but there's a satisfaction I get when I finish a rom and all works just as I wanted, without all the extra bloat designed to catter to everyone else.
You're proposing that nobody's doing anything for the dream anymore except for CM. How about you take up the challenge.
Variety went out the window when people started flaunting feature X or hack Y and then the community took it as a given.
I get tired of seeing idiots asking for a2sd hack (which I personally despise), oc'd kernels (which are just placebo), and other things.
All I'm interested in implementing on my roms is root, compcache, iptables for wifi/usb tether, smart cpu scaling, and a lean/fast en-US only rom. I honestly could care less about other locales, features, etc.
You should see how bad it is for iPhone jailbreaks. I own an iPod touch so same community. People will literally harass jailbreakers to make a new one.

but the thing that bugs me the most about his work are the ROUNDED CORNERS on the top of the screen..I HATE THAT..lol..like that the only thing that prevents me from using his roms..cause it make everything else seem smaller..
can someone explains why there like that..and if they is away to change it..cause i see when ppl make black theme patches it goes back to normal..so would there be away to do that also with the default bar
It is natural progression as the g1 ages developers are going to want to develop for their newer devices..remember they have lives and don't get salaries for their deving.so it's completely reasonable that they wouldn't want to develop for multiple devices. Unless your putting your hand up saying your willling to learn to dev I don't see the point of opening a thread ranting about developers not doing what you seem to beleive is their duty.

i kinda agree and disagree they have moved on but whoever is still here should try to make other roms bsides bases of cyanogen... there used to be lots of roms from kin but none were finished maybe someone could take his work and complete it or possibly impliment the new things or hacks that have been made now into the old roms it would be great to have some new old roms out that work 100% i know we can have fast sense roms just look at zachs rom that thing is freaking blazing fast for hero 2.1 but i cant hide sim contacts so no go for me...

Rant was probably to strong a word but yes devs are just moving to other devices. The reason team douche can keep making g1 roms is they have a team working on it as opposed to one person. If u want semi-functional Frankenstein roms you could always check out what kingklick is doing.
meh
cyan is releasing a good product with lots of features. im just kinda disappointed there aren't more mods available (like music beautification and adw which have become standard in roms)

Roms on the EVO not exciting

I have been on XDA since I bought my fist G-1 way back in the fall of 08. Cyanogen was a budding star, and Android was thought of as the "IPHONE killer". I have seen many developments since my first incursion into these forums. With that said, I would like to KNOW why someone cant come up with a ROM on the evo that could be based on Android, yet be completely skinned to give a more exciting experience. The thing is most ROMS are built on many others DEV's works, but nothing but theming is added to make them look different from each other. Yes, I know that there are a lot of under the hood changes going on to make their Roms faster, but nothing to make any Rom look different. I see some launchers out there that are awesome, but why cant someone come up with something that will really show off "Something different"
Before you go on about me and that you don't like what I am saying, point me to SOMETHING ANDROID, really different and don't attack me or this thread. I appreciate all of the hard work put into changing the Roms into your own, I have flashed most of the Roms built for the Evo and earlier Android devices. What I want is something that looks and act different, built on Android. I am hoping that I have just missed a posting, or some cool thread that someone has left. I strongly dislike IPHONE and its simple stupid approach, so please don't bring that platform into this discussion. Waiting to see!
Try MIUI. Its in the Development section.
You can also take a swing at compiling a ROM yourself, I've been considering it given the tools are free.

I just started using MIUI yesterday and it is an eye opening experience. So many nice features that are built right in. If you haven't tried it... give it a go.
Besides roms like MIUI and MYMs warm 2.2, dev's leave the theming to you! You can load the rom you would like and then find a theme that fits you.

Is there a dev working on a ROM like MIUI that completely changes the UI? I do agree with the OP because all the ROM are pretty much the same except for the color theme.
I think we will have to wait until SPB drops their software for customizing.

+1 for MIUI. Been running it since the beginning of November and I must say it's pretty awesome.
I totally agree. I have seen many roms for the evo, but many of them look very similar to each other. I'm glad this topic is being discussed in a rational matter. I hope new ideas will come from it.
I remember seeing a few articles about a mobile OS on engadget a few times before it was announced that it was killed off. It was minimalistic to its roots. The video demo I saw of it activated the menu when you slid your right thumb(right-handed demo i guess) and a arched menu would pop up. You would be able to dig deeper by going through the brances of the arcs. I for the name of it but the name "Elise" or something like it comes to mind.
If anything is lacking it's kernels for the Evo.
We have like one choice for sense based and like two for AOSP based.
The Epic has more choices... [and that's saying something]
MIUI, Liquid rush, and to be honest there are some nice sense roms out there. i like sense , also if the new launchers that are being created come out, that can give you a new look as well. There is probably a significant amount of changes, however with this being aftermarket and not supported by OEM's and sprint i think that kind of limits your choices
You might like myn's warm two point two, it still retains the sense features from htc but has a totally different look and feel to it. Also checkout virus rom, those are pretty nice. A lot of people here are into switching roms each week to keep things interesting.
The two big ones that are not sense based are miui and cyanogen. I think the reason they take so long to make and that there is so few is the complexity of starting from scratch. At least I think, but I'm not a programmer.

Thats because the mods keep on banning our best kernel makers.
Hero_over and Kingslik(sp?) both made the best kernels during their time on XDA/Evo.

I know. I'm just making an observation on the current reality
I can't really disagree with you but I think the reason why lots of the ROMs look alike is Sense. That said, I've been on MIUI since it came out. While others will scream that it's just copying iPhone, maybe it is but the ROM still retains all the benefits of android underneath.
Also, if it's just the launcher, I've tried out the Go Launcher and liked it the best. Again, it's not the same-old same-old.

I agree with you on SPB, it's a wait and see, I tried to be a bete tester for them, but I didnt get accepted. I have used it on my winmo devices in the past. Not sure what kind of experience though maybe just a nice launcher. I have to admit though I haven't tried MIUI, I do believe I will flash it later tonight.

Whats up with the roms lately?

I just wanted to get a feel/consensus on peoples opinion of the third party rom scene for the EVO. I started my XDA days back with a tilt, and have been loyal to HTC since then.
The EVO is simply the best phone out there at the moment, IMO. But the roms seem to be very lacking in actual substance and it's a bit disappointing.
Almost every rom I've looked at here has been so customized and themed they are really just eyesores. It was normal on all my other devices to have some of the roms that were being produced be like this, but not all. I've been really impressed in the past with HTC roms. Dutty is one of my favorites.
The only 2 current exceptions I've found are CM and Fresh, and since some of us refuse to use sense, it really only leaves one choice.
CM is awesome, and the work that goes into it is really really amazing. There isn't a bunch of customization to the UI, it's left up to you what you want to do for how your phone looks. It's a rock solid foundation to build upon, and it would be awesome to see more roms in that form.
Thoughts? Am I missing something?
This is the wrong section, the General section would be the appropriate section for this.
this should be in general, but i agree it seems that lots of roms out there are just customizations of existing roms, a color change here and there. There really isnt anything major to differentiate between sense roms, except for 3 or 4 big ones, and then there is CM rom, and the roms based of CM seem like just themed version of CM, but who knows i mean im not a developer, maybe theres only so much one can do as far as development.

What else do you want the ROM's out there to do?:
OC: Check
Undervolt: Check
AOSP Builds: Check
Open Source 4G: Check
De-odex: Check
Wide Variety of Themes: Check
Open Source FM Radio: Check
Wireless Tether: Check
Wired Tether: Check
Gingerbread: Check
AND THE LIST GOES ON...
What I'm trying to say is, unless your speaking specifically about HDMI, there's really not a lot left to be desired that can't be had from these phones until Honeycomb hits.
I mean, CM even supports SIP accounts natively...among the millions of other small details that are so amazing.
Even DLNA can be had through a simple app...what's left for you to want so badly that your phone cannot do already?
My point is, is that most devs are not going start over from scratch just for the heck of it, when something so close to optimum potential has already been reached.

Itotally disagree. I mean, some, yeah, you're right, but look at the mods done to the more popular roms. Not just theming but tweaks, custome apps, etc.
What more do you want form a ROM?
And while, true, some people are married to CM, some are more into Senseui, some Miui.
Everyone has different tastes, and from what I se eon here, there's something for just about everyone.
Thread moved to General.
As per your questions, devs make roms based on their personal taste and, in many cases, general feedback from the users. There are many plain, stock rooted roms out there, and many tutorials in case you want to make your own as well. Also, you can easily theme any rom to your liking. I hope this answers your concern.
i think the ROM's on the evo are pretty strong. My criteria is, do the majority if not all ROM's improve upon stock? Yes. Do the majority if not all the dev's support their ROM's and upgrade in a timely manner? Yes Do the majority if not all the dev's have themes/mods available for their ROMS? Yes. Are there more than one style of ROM's to choose? YES 1. Sense 2. AOSP - MIUI 3. AOSP - CM 4. AOSP - Liquid metal

Yes. MIUI.
the OP ... is expectiong way too much....
you do relize for most.. this is a good little hobby..
so is done around free time...
you want more... you do it! I dont have the skills to even try.
I do appreciate the ones that can... and do.
there are a lot of phones out in the market. and not all phones even have a dev community.. and if they do, it aint that big.
so there are different levels of dev support from phone to phone.
EVO, is way up there in the level of quality devs and community support.
Fixed my sig, forgot i changed the link. But there are a Sh*t ton of choices, my count is at 144 thus far

+1... this.
I've had 4 Android phones:
Evo
G2
MyTouch 3g Slide
Moto Cliq
This forum has more roms, kernels, mods, themes, etc than all 3 of my prior phones combined. Every time I hit the dev section I'm a kid in the candy store. There's fully functioning roms that work with everything and a few that I'm excited to see get better, like MIUI getting 4g.
There's very few phones out there with this much dev support, my friend has an LG vortex. Go find the LG vortex section of the forums. They don't exist.
My point, you have to do some digging but there's something here for everyone. If there isn't, make it! We could always use another dev to try to topple the big dogs.

Why do you use a custom ROM on your SGS2?

I got my S2 yesterday and so far, am very pleased with it. Before it, I had a ZTE Blade, which was my first smart phone.
With the blade, I was still on 2.1 when 2.3 came out, my network provider put a load of garbage on the phone that really slowed it down, not to mention taking up valueable space. Bascially, there was an endless list of problems that needed addressing. As a consequence, I started trying out custom ROMs almost as soon as I got the phone.
With the S2 however, I ditched the standard launcher, put on ADW EX, switched in a number of apps instead of the Samsung defaults, but I can't say I've found any significant bugs yet that make me thing I need to go custom.
Everything just works (let's hope it stays that way!), which is a world away from where I was with my old Blade.
With that in mind, why do you use a custom ROM? I think it can be split into two areas, bug fixes, and nice additions. From my reading so far:
Bug fixes:
Shutter lag on the camera?
Nice additions:
Bettery battery life through new kernals
ICS! (ok this is a big one, if Samsung is slow with their update and there's a custom ROM that works well, that will probably be enough to tempt me)
Notification lights (I don't understand why all phones don't have this by default, I fell in love with it on my old Nokia 6300 and the blinking red light is ever present on my work Blackberry)
Deeper theming - I do miss my circular battery indicator
I'm sure you guys will help me add to the list. The thing is, what is the cost? With my Blade, I craved a phone that was fast and reliable. I seem to have that now, and if the custom ROMs introduce their own bugs or decrease stability, I don't think it will be worth it for me.
Let me know your thoughts, I'm not trying to start a flame war. This community is a lot bigger with so many more projects and ROMs going on, I'm struggling to get a handle on it all. Hopefully this will help!
I wouldn't buy Android if it wasn't for customisation through roms...that's what makes Android special!

If we had not way to change roms, probably I had not bought an Android's phone.
I like to do it, i'm curious like every us!
Same as the answer i gave to the same question six months ago .
I want what i want not what you want on my phone .
Why is a question and therefore in the wrong forum .

Well, it's not a technical how do I do X question, but more of a general one, so I thought it was best here. I'm sure a mod will move the thread if they disagree with me.

Just a few months ago I bought myself an iPod touch... I was thrilled with it! it was my first "real" mp3 player since my sony NW-HD5...
I Jailbreaked it... but it wasnt enough..
I waited to see how the iPhone 4S would come along.. and when it did I suddenly realized something..
People who buy Apple products are often ready to feel their products are outdated the next year...
Sure enough, Apple's hardware specs are "inferior" than most of the high end android devices.. but as we know their iOS is optimized to squeeze the most juice out of it.. until it gets unsupported...
So thats one of the main reasons I bought and Android phone, and customize it to its fullest... Today my hardware works.. OK.. but in the future, with better ROMS, more optimized to the specific hardware.. my device will be more alive than ever..
So basically... Apple devices just get worse with time... Instead.. Android can only get better.

most of the mods in your list can be achieved by jkay super awesome work. You dont need an entire rom for it. I can understand a kernel affecting battery life but how does a rom do it? (apart from swapping a few apks out?)

You can do all of the tweaks that you can think of without a custom ROM. But the beauty of using a ROM instead of doing it yourself is that you get a full package of what the developers could think of and all the feedback from the users. So its a base to proceed your modding from. You also don't have to deodex the ROM yourself for easier modding.
Regarding battery life, it comes from bloatware and excessive logging that has been removed. Often ROM makers will also replace some of the stock apps with more battery efficient ones. For instance swapping apps that through a bug keeps the phone awake.

I get bored with stock Android and I was looking for something new. Since SGS2 is still the best phone available, I flashed custom roms and I am sorry I didn't do that before - it is much better now.

i fail fo understand what do you find ****ty in a samsung rom?
yes they could have made it more customizable like sense but thats about it. All custom rom chefs do is customize the sammy rom more. look at the features
mms removed from logs - i am sure most of us dont want it but there are some who use it. Understand samsung is creating this to please everyone.
I can give more examples. Moral of the story is lets credit the super devs here but lets not take credit away from samsung. They have done a decent job with this phone in all departments.
good question
I use custom roms on my SGS2 simple because I can...
Choice is an Android Thing
Because I want a change once in a while. It's like a getting new phone everytime.
