[Q] Can't Flash Recovery - any help? - Blade General

I'm having an irritating problem.
I've rooted my wife's Gen 1 Orange SF with Androot, even repeated it when I started having problems to make sure the root had worked. SuperUser is installed and working so I know it has gone OK.
I've installed Recovery Manager v0.36, which has root access.
The current recovery is listed as "unrecognised"
I flashed the following CWM - recovery-clockwork-3.1.0.1-blade-gen1.img (MD5 checksum correct)
I get an "installing" message, then back to the Recovery screen and the recovery is still listed as "unrecognised".
One of the guides I found on Modaco is quite specific about using Recovery Manager v0.34 (though I suspect it just hasn't been updated with the latest release) so I've also tried this using that version and no joy.
So... I thought I'd try the FASTBOOT method. I turn the phone off, remove and replace the battery. Turn the phone on whilst holding the up volume button, and the phone just boots up normally. I've tried this repeatedly, I don't get the big grey square that people report when FASTBOOT fails, I just get no response at all.
Grrrrr!
Any thoughts?

Hmm, when you power up holding volume up key (held for a couple of seconds) does you phone show a static green android logo, or does it boot up fully to the lockscreen?
If only to the android logo, means you're in fastboot.
Edit: you can replace the green android logo with Orange's logo in the above comment if you haven't flashed an alternate ROM on the phone as yet.

I also had the same while trying to flash a recovery to my friend's Blade. I understood that i have been flashing the wrong recovery all this time (though it showed for gen1 and i had a gen1). I used the given recovery(link provided below), and it worked for me like a charm. Use the link download on root of sd card. Use recovery manager to install it. If the recovery manager shows that it has identified the cwmod version then its done or else if it again says unrecognised try different versions of cwmod.
Preferably after getting cwmod to working convert your gen1 to gen2 (wbaw method). Then you can flash a custom rom and use ROM manager to upgrade your cwmod recovery.

He hasnt been able to install CWmod yet so no green logo will appear. Due to unrecognised version only DELL logo appears and hangs or it reboots normally. And yes FASTBOOT is not enabled in gen1 devices so thats why i say to convert to gen2 as soon as possible.

Hi Be4con,
I flashed a batch of 10 blades the other day, and wrote my own little guide for it. I had exactly the same problem as you with the first two i tried to flash.
The guide on modaco does work, but i found i had to use a much older version of clockwork mod. I used 2.5.0.8 (if i remember correctly) not at work just now so cant see my notes. This was picked up by the recovery no problems and i was able to move on from there.
Hope that helps

Hi
You have try to flash directly to your device with a terminal emulator
type SU
accept SuperUser autorisation
type flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery_xx_xx.img (you find the good version on the recovery on internet)
reboot your phone with volume + down
if you have any problem to find the fine recovery or to flash the recovery contact me on pv . this method work with my zte gen1

Root gone wrong

rooted phone. went well Installed rom
not so well.
Holding home and power brings me to a "Android System recovery Utility"
I think what i did wrong was i installed two different types of roms on to my G1 unwittingly. So now all that happens is it stays on the G1 screen and doesn't change. Left it charging overnight and stayed on that screen
Is there a way to access and rectify via console option.
Please help
If you have recovery, you should be fine. Just flash your favorite image and wipe your userdata.

Holding Home + Power is supposed to take you into the recovery image.
At the bottom of your recovery image does it say Amon Ra 1.5.2 or 1.6.2 or something like that?
If your phones rooted then just wipe and reinstall you rom.
Like lets say your doing the new cyanmod
you apply zip
DR83
With out rebooting apply zip
Cyanmod-rom 1.4xxxx
If it boots back into Android System recovery Utility just hold home and back again.
Give it time to write its radio and its first time rebooting it says on the boot screen for a awhile some longer then others.
This site has always helped me its better to see the instructions rather then read them.

[Q] VISIONARY & Clockworkmod Couple Questions

I'm pretty sure I have these items in the correct order to "Permaroot" my MT4G and begin using Clockworkmod to load ROMs (and or/also want to be able to back up my default ROM)
My current attempts:
Downloaded and installed: VISIONary, from android.modaco.com, sorry I can't post actual links (VISIONary+, most recent version) was no longer avalible in the market so I had to install it from the URL)
Downloaded and installed "Clockwordmod" from the Market.
Put the phone into USB-Debugging mod, and disabled fast boot.
VISIONary+ question: I setup TEMPROOT, and "Root on Boot", assuming I would than be able to boot into "Recovery mode" via "Clockworkmod"
The phone reboots, and I'm assuming that would boot into "Root" **Root on boot** (Yes I know the temp. should fail after a reboot, but I thought, I'll stay away from "Permaroot" for now). However, I don't get to any sort of recovery mode, instead I get a screen with a triangle and exclamation in red, and that's it, it just hangs there, I'm thinking that this is just USB-Debugging, and I'm not achieving recovery mode, so this must be the result of not booting into a root mode.
Going back to VISIONary+, I attempt to "Permaroot", the phone's homescreen goes blank and nothing happens. The phone eventually turns itself off but doesn't reboot, subsequently, I must restart it manually, again, I'm not sure if I've achieved anything?
Advice, suggestions? Would be very appreciated.
Questions that might explain what's wrong?
Even in USB-Debugging mode, should I be connected to a PC via USB-Cable during all of this?
Any thoughts on why the PERMAROOT fails, or the "Root on boot" fails to get me to "Recovery mode"?
Last thing, I get a complaint from "Clockworkmod" when loading, that my SD Card must be mounted (which I'm assuming it isn't due to USB-Debugging mode and/or being connected to the PC) So should I get a good charge and disconnect from the PC while attempting all this? Fixed, disconnected USB-Cable, and mounted SD card in settings, this stopped this error
Also, I'm interested in backing up my default ROM ASAP as a safety-net in-case I screw something up. Is this possible via recovery mode in "Clockworkmod"? Links to advice on doing this?
Thanks everyone! Great board!
you should follow this as it worked for me flawlessly

thanks! that post seems to answer a lot of the specifics I might have been missing! Guess I missed it in search! I'll report my results!
I followed it exactly but I still get the Red Exclamation Point. I have rooted my phone s-off and I have superuser and rom manager. I did the Flash Clockwork Recovery but when I reboot into recovery I get Red Exclamation Point then when I click vol up and power the next says " E:Can't open /cashe/recovery/command " What should I do??

You can NOT flash clockwork without S-OFF and the red triangle is recovery. It is stock recovery if you press volup+power you will see the menu
S is off I rooted my phone using the terminal Emulator and that worked fine
When I press upvol and power I see
Reboot system now
Apply sdcard:update.zip
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cashe partition
E:Can't open /cashe/recovery/command
This is what my screen shows when I try to go into recovery and again my phone is rooted s-off and I use superuser
Try flashing the recovery again... for some reason people have reported it not sticking... just go back and flash it like 2 or 3 times then reboot
I found out the problem it was so easy but I never would of thought of checking but my wife said maybe my Rom Manager is a bad copy (because I get all my apps from a not so honest site) so I deleted my RM and downloaded the freebie on the market and it worked on the first try.....Now I have Glacier Rom running and I feel like a new man

+1 on that, When I first flashed it, I was still getting the red triangle, after a quick google search I re flashed it an extra 2 times and it worked flawlessly

HTC Tattoo bricked? Doesn't boot, goes to fastboot...

Hey!
This is the issue: when I try to turn the phone on by just pressing the red button it goes directly to the fastboor menu. If I try to go to the recovery from there shows "TATTOO" for hours. If i try to go to the recovery dirctly by pressing HOME+ red button, it firsto shows the fastmenu for a second and tries to boot unsuccessfully. During this boot tries, I try to get some info with adb logcat, but the device is not casting anything. And well, if a picture is worth a thousand words, I guess a video is way better:
youtube.com/watch?v=zAejyMIVNGk (newbie, no urls!)
sorry for my english
And well, I have no idea how I got to this, this used to be my phone, but I bought a Nexus One and gave this to my sister, who has no idea what happened (as usual). Oh, this morning somehow I managed to get to the recovery menu, and booted until the android bootscreen, then vibrated and died again. I got to the recovery again, made a nandroid backup and wiped all data, it booted successfully, but the rom had no home application and ran really bad.
I was about to try to make a goldcard and install the stock RUU rom, but if I have no adb I cannot make one...
Any idea?
PS: the rom was nFinity 1.18 (2.2 Froyo) and the recovery was the lastest Clockwork.
PS2: I just realized that in every place I say fastboot I mean HBOOT, sorry again
sounds like recovery is still there, if you hold home + menu when phone if off , and then click red power button you should get recovery menu.
Then hopefully you can try full wipe and install a rom , rember the first time u boot a rom might take a few minutes
let me know how it goes
Yup, not using that method but I can manage to get to recovery sometimes. I'm trying to flash another ROM, but for some reason it doesn't let me. I've tried KalimochoAz (gingerbread) and HDCR (donut) and says something about assertion failed when checking if the device was click on the first case and in the second, complains about unsupported stuff...
I was about to try another roms by random but the SD does not refresh or even mounts, there must be something really messed up with this phone...
You can try to flash your stock rom from fastboot.
You don't need a goldcard, just run the update utility on pc, go to your temp directory and take the rom.zip file, rename it to CLICIMG.zip, copy it to sd card, put card on device and on fastboot menu pres vol down to start flashing the rom. I is the same version with the rom that device has before rooting, you will not get any errors.
I think there's a little misunderstanding here, mainly because of my confusion, it's not the fastboot menu qhat I get, but the HBOOT menu, and pressing the back button in order to access fastboot doesn't work...
oh I managed to boot something, I renamed the RUU exe to CLICDIAG.zip, because I could not find anything in C:\temp (is there where I have to look for the file?)
anyway, the zip appears to load on the phone, but once the progress bar completes, nothing happens... In my computer, the zip contains a .txt file and boot.img, but appears to be corrupt, and cannot extract any file (obviously, it's an exe)
so what do I do?

Of course will not work like this.
You must first run the RUU utility on pc and while is open to search your temp directory(maybe is inside another folder) for rom.zip file. This is the rom, the executable is an installation program which contain the rom and the app to flash the rom from pc packaged. You need only the rom.zip for flashing from sd card.
I've looked in the whole hard disk for that rom.zip after executing the RUU (I cannot get further than the step that tries to detect the tattoo, failing, so maybe it's not even created).
Apart from that, I managed to boot twice to what seems to be gingerbread, nFinity 1.18, but says in the lower left corner "Safe Mode" and I have no home application, no action on any button, just the notification bar and the lock screen. ADB doesn't work either.

You don't need to go so far. Just run the ruu utility and when the first screen appears go to temp dir(c:\users\you user's name\local\appdata\temp on windows 7). The executable is an encrypted package and when you run it extracts all included files and then starts the installation program. These files will deleted after this program exits(when the installation complete or an error occurs)
Cool! I just renamed it to CLICLIMG.zip and I finally loaded. The problem now is that when it finishes, instead of asking me to flash it, says
"CID Incorrect!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<ACTION> Yes
<POWER> No"
While running the RUU I made sure that it was for HTC Tattoo since it showed me the device during the steps. And I got it from a post describing the steps to flash it using the goldcard.
Furthermore, this error is something similar to what happened when I tried to flash from the recovery. This is REALLY weird...
Probably this isn't the sama as your device's stock rom. I think goldcard needed for flashing any htc original rom, but without goldcard only the device's version will be flashed successfully. Try to download other original roms if you don't know which you had before.
Here is a site with shipped roms for tattoo:
http://www.shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Click
The RUU wasn't a problem, I tried now with a goldcard and flashed successfully! I could not get ADB connection to make it, but I once made one and still had the .img in my mail inbox.
But still nothing has changed...
pressing on drives me to the HBOOT screen, whose only options that work are "simlock" to flash CLICIMG.zip, and recovery (freezes on "TATTOO")
EDIT: does not freeze, but goes back to HBOOT after a while... ¬¬
You say that now you have the stock HTC rom and again you cannot boot it and instead the device reboots again to HBOOT?
Then maybe you have a hardware problem which leads to this behaviour.
OK, now I guess it still has warranty, but the problem is that I rooted it.
But now that I flashed somehow the original rom, should be no problem right?
Yes, if you successfully flash the stock rom, you're not root any more.
had that problem to, but theres easy fix for it without doing all whats being sayd here
Even tho phone dont boot annymore and stays on logo plug in the usb cable
and work with adb shell and reflash recovery (to be good tattoo-hack.ko etc tricks need to be done before doing it or you get errors)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=716282 step 1.5 and tools from step 1.3
and ether get Amon RA recovery or clockworkmod and use
Code:
./flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
then reboot into recovery
HTML:
adb shell "reboot recovery"
mount usb put in a custom rom and flash it
if all done well should work (had same problem)
bascly adb still work even if you think you bricked phone just have to let it "startup"
Greetings
I'm afraid that won't work. I've been trying all the time with adb logcat and adb devices unsuccesfully. I thought that the TATTOO bootscreeb would give me some feedback in all cases, but now doesn't seem to work...
I've had similar problems when trying to flash nfinityGB.
My problem was that I missed something on the way from
- creating a gold card
- rooting device
- installing recovery
- flashing rom
All I did was to download and execute "RUU_Click_HTC_WWE_1.67.405.6_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe" (or any other ruu).
Be shure to have SDK with all drivers installed properly.
After this your device is in unrooted (original) state as dancer_69 already told you.
Now you can decide whether to claim warranty or properly follow the guides on xda to get root and flash custom roms.
I think I know from long ago what is happening here, just couldn't believe it. Maybe the keys are sticked or something, that would explain the always going into fastboot mode without pressing the VOL DOWN key. Now it boots 1 out of each 5 tries, and when it gets to the home app, it's on "safe mode" (achieved by pressing MENU key while booting).
I think they will take care for it back in the HTC support (well, I hope)

Something like this thought when I said that maybe is a hardware problem.

Streak Boot Issues Cant Restore Stock Recovery or Boot ROM (Bootloop)

Hiya all, I am quite desperate for help, I consider myself intermediate when it comes to dealing with android devices but I am well and truly stumped on this one.
I received a second hand streak from eBay yesterday, turned on first time and booted fine, running Steakdroid 1.9.0 by DJ Steve. I had a few issues with it reboot randomly or crashing, as it had Streakmod Recovery installed I did a full wipe all areas, reinstalled the Rom 1.9.0 and bit a factory reset on reboot from the Dell recovery menu.
All the device does now is reboot in bootloop on the dell logo it stall when it goes as far as booting or trying to load the Rom.
I ran the test in fastboot to test the internal drive as this is known to fail and both that and my SD memory passed the test.
I used fastboot and CMD to flash 4399 recovery image the OEM recovery image for the Rom Streak_104_4399_21.pkg I renamed this to update.pkg and rebooted the device into recovery where I then went to restore the original firmware (1.6) but as soon as I pressed the camera button to proceed I was greeted with a lovely black screen.
I left the device for about 2 minutes where it reset itself and just keep rebooting on the dell logo the restore did not seem to work, just to check fastboot and CMD was working as it should I went to reinstall the Streakmod Recovery image and sure enough it worked I managed to boot the device back into streakmod.
Unfortunately every time I try to install a custom rom they just do not seem to load the device simply stalls on the Dell logo because I cant seem to restore the original recovery image for the stock rom I cannot factory restore and nor will any custom rom boot.
All I have is access to fastboot and Streakmod recovery aaaah!!
If anyone can help me in the slightest I would well very, very, very much appreciate it!
As you have fastboot working, go to the wiki and download the recovery.img for the latest 360 rom, put the corresponding rom on your sd card named update.pkg and try to do a recovery by powering on device holding down volume up and down.
Flash then do a factory reset and you should be fine.
Streakmod is a great tool for flashing custom roms, not too many problems using custom roms, but you must use Streakmod with care, never use the factory reset option from within streakmod itself, this can render your phone a brick.

Thanks for the reply here's my progress so far:
Flashed recovery image and loaded rom to SD card..... Booted into dell recovery and this is what happened
Finding update package
Opening update package
Verifying update package
Yellow bar 25%ish at this point
flashing lights
Installing Update
33%ish lights flash again
Yellow bar jumps 3/4 then fills screen, streaks screen goes blank/ off
Doesn't reboot/ cant turn on so I remove battery and switch back on and I am back to Dell logo then I get a picture of an android and another small progress bar that slowly fills and the device and it again reboots
Streak reboots again about 3 times like it is stuck in bootloop, I leave it and keep my fingers crossed I then get an animation of the Dell logo and glowing lights behind it.
Keep fingers crossed and sure enough it boots into the lock screen, I go to unlock it but it freezes and I get the flashing lights syndrome and the screen goes blank
Remove battery and switch on again, dell logo bootloop after about 8 or 9 bootloops it boots back up into the ROM above but then crashes once again...
Is it fair to say this streak has given up the ghost?
Flashing lights could mean baseband mismatch.
Try again, but be certain to use the correct recovery.img for the rom you are flashing, get the 351, 354 or 360 recovery.img that matches your choice of rom.
Make sure there is only 1 update.pkg on your microsd card, the one you want to flash, move all others, rename them or delete them. The Dell recovery always looks for update.pkg, nothing else.
Flashing lights could be something more major, but i still think its a baseband mismatch.

Honestly thats what I wanted to hear but what worries me is I downloaded the recovery and image from Wiki both relating to 360 will try flashing again I really do hope it can be fixed! Seems today is not a good day for me today many things going up the creek!
I am 75% certain if you flash it with the right update.pkg, that is a renamed 360 pkg you downloaded, you will have success.
When you flashed Streak_104_4399_21.pkg you were trying to revert to Android 1.6.
You may have to use the QDLTool to fix the Streak. I am not sure what problems trying an 1.6 build over an Android 2.2 build can cause. You may want to wait for some more feedback.
Start here for more info and try the links in my signature.
I dont believe you can downgrade directly from 2.2.x -> 1.6.
2.2.x -> 2.1 -> 1.6 might work but why are you doing this in the first place?
Just directly install 360 or the like
teaganravetta,
Does this sum up your situation?
1) you bought a used phone and it had StreakDroid 1.9.0 on it
2) because of issues with SD 1.9.0, you tried to flash Streak_104_4399_21.pkg, not realizing that SD is based on a newer stock rom
3) you then tried flashing bb 360
3) Now you are having issues with boot loops and phone won't boot?

I'm not going to tell you anything different than anyone else, however I am going to give you links to the exact files you need so there is no confusion.
Download this:
http://mirror2.streakdroid.com/manii/360/recovery.img
This is the recovery image for 360. Save it in the folder on your computer that has fastboot.
Now download this:
http://mirror2.streakdroid.com/manii/Streak_360_17397_00.pkg
Rename this to Update.pkg and place in the root of your SD Card. (ensure there is no other Update.pkg on your card)
Power off the phone, if not done already.
Hold the power and camera button down until you get a white screen. Click on fastboot on your phone. Wait 10 seconds.
Plug it into your computer with the usb cable.
Wait for it to say fastboot ready (or something similar).
Now flash the recovery.img using the following command (This command assumes a Windows PC):
fastboot.exe -i 0x413 flash recovery recovery.img
When both your computer and the phone says it was successful, complete, or whatever, pull the battery.
Replace the battery, hold both volume buttons along with the power button.
In the menu that opens, choose the second option. Let us know your results.
I only added this post in case their was confusion over which files were actually needed. No need for a separate baseband, dsp1, or anything else. These are all included in the pkg file.
many thanks for all the help, so far I have downloaded "QDLTool3rd_20101022_GAUSB1A130500" turned off driver signing as I am x64 all ADB drivers fine and COM ports okay have restored via this tool according to the log successfully.
Phone rebooted a few times it has paused on the Dell logo for a moment but the guide did say anything up to 10minutes for first boot so I am holding for the moment to see if this has cured it otherwise I will report back and re download the above files and try that!
It takes me a while because I am out in the sticks I only have a 60kbps download speed (yikes) I know!!
Because your first attempt at flashing a stock ROM was the Android 1.6 version I am not sure you can just flash 360 at this point. I think you have to use the QDLTool (repairtool), but I am not sure. Try searching for the procedures that were used to upgrade from 1.6.
Edit to use the QDLTool:
In this post DL under commonly downloaded tools get Fastboot/ADB utils + drivers for Streak 5/7 and Venue and QDL Tool.
Then download qdltool-tutorial.zip from this page. unzip the tutorial and open it with a browser that supports flash or other flash viewer.
After using the QDLTool let the Streak boot and then flash the 360 recovery file and the 360 ROM. You must not let the phone boot completely after flashing a different recovery or the phone will restore the one that came with the ROM currently on the phone. Read this.
You can find more info about QDLTool by searching. As I said I think that is what you need to do.

[Q] Rooted Nexus 10 Stuck in Bootloop, Please Help!

Hello all,
Any help with this would be seriously appreciated. I rooted my Nexus 10 a while back, maybe two years ago. I'm not very proficient with this stuff. Anyhow I decided to do the OTA upgrade to 5.0...I was concerned something would go wrong unless I went to stock first, but I read that the only thing that would happen is root would be removed.
Anyhow, the tablet appears stuck while booting. I see the Google screen first with the unlocked indicator on the bottom. A few seconds later is the Android logo on its back, a red triangle over it with an exclamation point and "no command" written below". It stays that way for a minute or so, tries to reboot and goes back to the no command screen. I can't even power off, when I try to do so it just powers back on by itself and ends up at the no command screen again.
I tried booting into recovery (power, volume up, volume down). My options from here are either Start, Restart Bootloader, Recovery Mode or Power Off. Every option I choose leads to the No Command Screen (except power off, which powers off). No idea what to do from here.
Any help at all would be appreciated. As you can probably tell I don't have much experience with this and just wanted to go back to unrooted stock. If you have advice, please be clear. I can follow directions well enough, just don't have much experience here. Thanks in advance.
Same here, bootloop.
Same thing here. A seemingly short download of Lollipop (even though I have 50Mbs internet). Installation, reboot, and now it loops endlessly. I can get to the bootloader or into Download mode, but that's all. Recovery mode just reboots. I was rooted and had TWRP installed. Other than that, I was running stock 4.4.4.
I've rooted all my devices, and installed various ROM's on several devices. I have the full ADB installation. I have the Nexus Root Toolkit installed. The problem is, the device will not show up under "Devices" on the computer itself. I've installed every USB driver there is (and uninstalled each one after it does not work, so no I do not have several USB drivers installed). Of course nothing shows up using "adb devices" either. Nexus Root Toolkit also cannot find any devices. I've read everything on this subject I can find, and there are no answers out there. Anyone have ANY ideas??
Thanks
Guys, if your device is connected in fastboot (try "fastboot devices") then you can flash roms or recovery (and then flash rom) from there. There are multiple threads with the same problems out there which were fixed. E.g: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-10/help/bricked-t2948546
In my example, I flashed TWRP recovery from fastboot, then installed custom ROM from recovery (official ROM failed to install for some reason). Try this, it might help.

Go to Fastboot mode (pwr+both volumes), Than select recovery after a while an android with Exclamation mark appears which is a stock recovery screen. To access the stock recovery menu press and hold power than press one of the volume keys so the menu will appear. Than do a factory reset and clear caches. You can than reboot and wait for boot animation to finish (it wont take long this time) and you will boot.
If this doesnt work you can flash a stock factory image easily from fastboot again.
