About HTC Unlock Bootloader - Wildfire General

Hey guys ,I'm a newbie. I have a question:
When I buy my phone, the bootloader was locked .And how can we unlock our phone's bootloader if HTC unlock bootloader? Then we can root our phones and run custom Rom ,right?
Sorry for my English

That is IF AND ONLY IF HTC Unlocks it. Right now, they have only said they will "Review the policy". They have said nothing about actually unlocking it.

...and even if they do stop encrypting/locking bootloaders, they will almost certainly not release a new update for the Wildfire. They've done their 2.2 update - I doubt they're interested in updating any more unfortunately :\

Is that mean we still can not root with out XTC

You got that right, so:
- go search for someone who has an xtc clip an will unlock it for a low price
- wait for the XTC clip PAYG (probably between £25 - £45, not yes available).

Well at least sign the petition! (see below)

So all of you mean that there's nothing gonna change on wildfire, right?

they said they are working on unlocking all bootloaders for all HTC brands, check it out on facebook

Its redundant really, after the release of Alpharev X / Revolutionary.
Besides, as per their latest update, it seems you have to create some sort of account and have to "legally" accept that all or some parts of your warranty are void. I would go the Alpharev route anyday. Why let HTC know what modding I am doing to my phone?

Unlock bootloaders as in S-off right?
Well I think HTC kind of missed locking all of their devices.
I bought my wildfire from Vodafone Romania and even after the Froyo Update i had my S-Off
That is quite strange.

on HTC facebook page they said they are working on unlocking the bootloader for all HTC devices and they are started with HTC Sensation.
they will use Web-based tool to unlock bootloader.
how will this work?
The Web tool requires that you register an account with a valid e-mail address and accept legal disclaimers that unlocking may void all or parts of your warranty. Then plug in your phone to a computer with the Android SDK loaded to retrieve a device identifier token, which you can then enter into the Web tool to receive a unique unlock key via e-mail. Finally, apply the key to your device and unlocking will be initiated on your phone.

Unfortimatly the tool only supports the sensation with a 1.45 fota which.is not out in the uk yet. Id suggest trying revolutionary AT YOUR OWN RISK

Unlocking HTC Hero on ORANGE Rom SUCCESS!

I can confirm that you can EASILY unlock a HTC Hero on ORANGE without having the go thru the tricky procedure of installing the Modaco Custom Rom also known as rooting.
I bought a brand new HTC Hero on eBay locked to Orange, when I recieved it I noted that it was not running the latest Orange ROM 2.73.61.66 so I updated it, this was fairly straightforward as I had an Orange PAYG sim to hand which I got for FREE also on eBay which allowed me to check the version.
The only problem I had was related to Windows 7 64bit (and possibly Vista 64bit) in that I kept getting error 170 when trying to install the new Orange ROM, I ended up doing it on my Windows 7 32bit netbook instead.
Once updated I purchased an unlock code for £ 6.50 on eBay which was to unlock Hero on T-Mobile but unlock codes are specific to the IMEI not the supplier so it worked with the Orange.
SUCCESS!

I know but previously with an Orange locked phone you HAD to root in order to unlock it, which is quite an undertaking for the less technical amongst us.
Since February 2010 Orange ROM update 2.73.61.66 was released all you now had to do was update the ROM to the latest Orange ROM 2.73.61.66 which is much easier proposition. This fact is not mentioned on the HTC site or on Orange info about the update.
I am not saying rooting is still no beneficial its just there does not seem to be much regarding this new easy way to unlock the Orange out there.
My first google searches returned posts many of which dated back to 2009 and after a quick search I had come to the conclusion that unlocking an Orange Hero was not really feasable.
It was only because I won an auction for one on eBay which did not have the simlock mentioned in the listing which turned out to be an Orange that I started to look into it further and found a few references to the fact that the 2.73.61.66 ROM update solved the problem but info was still pretty scarce.
If you search this forum for HTC orange unlock there is very little information there, hopefully someone searching in future will find this and have the confidence to buy Orange locked Heros or be able to lock theirs should they already have one.
You never had to root it before you unlocked it! I unlocked my first hero the day i got it, i never rooted that one. I rooted this one and havent unlocked it

Exactly
Some Orange handsets never gave the option to input the network unlock code. Can't remember which ROM version it was now. But yeah, some had to downgrade or update to get that option. Same as mine.
I've unlocked 4 Heroes on Orange using different ROM versions..
Just to clarify - untill the release of the February Orange ROM Update 2.73.61.66 it was impossible to unlock the ORANGE variant of the HTC Hero without installing the Modaco Custom Rom first (aka rooting) which was a tricky proposition for those who did not want to get their hands too dirty.
Heros locked to other networks never had this problem and it was possible to unlock them with any ROM. The ORANGE variant needs the 2.73.61.66 ROM update to enable relatively simply unlocking.
Like I said I just updated my brand new ORANGE locked Hero from an older ORANGE ROM to the latest 2.73.61.66 ROM available on the HTC Hero UK Site and was able to unlock the phone after purchasing a £ 6.50 unlock code from eBay which was for a T-Mobile phone but the unlock is based on the IMEI not the brand so any properly generated unlock code will then work.
EDIT: I think some early HTC Heros from Orange had a ROM which did allow unlocking but that was replaced by a further set of updates which disabled unlocking untill the February 2.73.61.66 ROM update enabled unlocking once again, this may explain why some people say they had no problem unlocking their early Orange HTC Hero.

I thick your getting things a little mixed up here, for a start Installing a Custom ROM such as MC will not root your device, the fact is you need to have the device rooted (and have a recovery image installed) before you can install it.
In fact I had my device rooted for several months on the stock Orange UK ROM.
And there was never a problem whereby you could not unlock an Orange branded phone without flashing a custom ROM, I did it on the old Orange ROM (pre-feb update).
Believe me there was a problem with some Orange ROMS and unlocking, a method employed was to root the phone, installing a Modaco Custom Rom was part of the rooting process after which you could unlock.
What happened was that it would ask for the unlock code and when you entered it, it said unlock successfull but you would get a no service message when you tried a SIM other then Orange in the phone.
After rebooting the phone the unlock message would appear again and if you entered the code again the same thing would happen.
Apparently the phone would hang with a message saying unlocking so the unlock did not actually go through despite it saying it had completed successfully.
If you do a google search you will find multiple instances where people had this problem. You can also get the no service message on a phone that has been unlocked successfully (with the 2.73.61.66 ROM for example) but that is usually because the IMEI has been blocked on some (if not all) networks.
There were definitely Orange Heros that couldn't be unlocked without installing another ROM.. (you technically didnt need to root however)
I have one. I cant even remember which ROM it had when I bought it.. but the code I bought didn't work.. I changed to a custom ROM.. and it worked fine. (Quite a lot of unlocking sites tell you to do this)
Orange do seem to do it quite often as they apparently change the algorithm a bit.. they do it on nokias as well, as I tried to get orange to unlock one for me a few years back.. and Orange themselves couldnt unlock it as id flashed a non-orange ROM to it so the codes they generated (for a phone they supplied) didnt work any longer and it had to be reflashed by nokia first back to the orange rom.. so they could unlock it for me (i had to post it in to Oranges technical people in newcastle) and then i had to reflash it back to the ROM i wanted.

As you quite rightly point out you did not need to flash a custom ROM, if you downgraded to one of the earliest Orange ROMs on which unlocking was possible then you could unlock successfully. The thing is the older Orange ROMs might not have been available or people just did not know which of the oldest Orange ROMs allowed unlocking so a fair few of them installed custom ROMs to get around the problem else they put the phone back on eBay. All you have to do now is install Orange ROM 2.73.61.66 as to whether future Orange ROM updates will still allow unlocking to work is another matter.
The problem was that the phone on certain Orange ROMs would hang at the "unlocking SIM" stage, it was regarded as a firmware bug and perhaps had something to do with the algorithm as you pointed out - even unlock codes provided by Orange themselves would not work.

Its simple, first you must make sure you update to Orange ROM 2.73.61.66 which is available at http://www.htc.com/uk/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=283&act=sd&cat=all its the 2010/02/04 ROM update. This is needed to unlock the phone as many older ROM versions had a problem when it came to unlocking this particular brand of phone.
New phones from Orange may already have this update you can check which version you currently have in the Settings/About Phone/Status. At the moment there is no guarantee that future ROMs will still allow unlocking so its best to flash the latest (as of today) 2010/02/04 2.73.61.66 Orange ROM update to be sure.
After you have flashed the phone you can then buy an unlock code for £ 6.50 on eBay (from any seller) I used this eBay seller http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Unlock-HTC-Hero-Lock-T-Mobile-UK-/290421723982?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item439e7bd34e don`t worry that it says T-Mobile the code provided will unlock an Orange as well and in fact any brand of Hero just follow the instructions carefully. Simply insert your O2 sim and enter the unlock code provided when prompted - jobs a goodun!.
Once you have unlocked the phone it stays unlocked forever so you can flash future ROM updates without fear of it becoming locked again.

Yes it works, the reason why they say they do not unlock Orange is because of the problems I mentioned with some older ROMS and they do not want/need comebacks from uninformed people on Orange struggling to unlock.
When you buy the code you do not actually have to tell them which network its locked to but if you do just say its an Orange phone that has been rooted, thats what I told them although it hadn`t actually been rooted just flashed to the Orange ROM 2.73.61.66 2010/02/04.
You will notice they have exceptions to the NO Orange rule in that if you ROOT the phone then they will support an Orange unlock. Rooting is no longer necessary once you flash the Orange 2.73.61.66 ROM 2010/02/04 and they do not know this.
Hope this clears up any final hesitations.

No, you need to buy a code but villain 12 should support unlocking as it's based on a plain unbranded rom

No we are not saying this - it will never be possible to unlock a HTC Hero without an unlock code (which can be bought for only £ 6.50 on eBay).
If you could find some way of generating a valid unlock code for free perhaps by using some kind of generator then maybe it would be possible to do it for free.
But at the moment I know of no way to generate a free unlock code therefore had to pay £ 6.50 for one on eBay.
We were just talking specifically about how to go about unlocking a HTC Hero on Orange using an unlock code bought from eBay.
Hi
I have had the hero for a month now which is locked to orange
i have tried various things such as Turbo Sims, codes and etc
They didnt worked out for me. i have been looking for ages for a code.
Currently i bought a unlock code for £12, however it says "Incorrect pin"
I am currently on the Villian Rom 12.
Can any 1 help

Differences between Unlocked Device from Factory vs Unlocked via IMEI code

Hello,
I'm planning to buy a DHD but I can have it from expansys Factory unlocked or from a Mobile Operator Company and then unlocked via IMEI code, my question is is any difference? or advantage or if I unlock the DHD at the end both of them will be exactly the same functionality?
Thanks and sorry for my silly question

The only difference would be whether the mobile operator has put on branding on the software.

like a stupid bootlogo, like silly "apps" that just link to their website, etc - BLOATWARE
Ok thanks, but at the end I will receive the updates via HTC no from the Operator?
Thanks guys
from my experience with sony erricsons, there is a "license" within the phones software which determines the unlock status with a red license being in a locked state, blue being factory unlocked, brown being reasearch and development, etc
i dont know if its the same thing, or if it is an analygous system with androids
If you have an Orange branded DHD, for example, you would normally have to wait for Orange to issue an update.
Android Release Timeline
Google --Develop--> HTC --Modify--> Orange --Ruin--> You
However, if you root your DHD, S-OFF & flash custom recovery you will get updates much quicker, albeit officially unsupported by HTC.

With the Touch HD (WM device) the updates for the IMEI unlocked phones had to be from the operator and not from HTC. Maybe it's the same with Android phones...

They come from the operator once they have modified the stock HTC ROMs. So if you buy from a network operator and the phone is branded, you will most probably have to wait for updates, unless you debrand it.
I am buying a New SGS 2, the seller has told me that its factory Unlocked, but I have my doubts that he has De-branded the phone and selling with the name of Factory Unlocked.
Can someone tell me, how would I know if the Seller has Sold me a Debranded phone or a factory Unlocked one?
1.) don't necro threads
2.) this is the DHD forum, it would be better if you post in the SGS2 forum.
btt:
when you use it, there won't be any difference between the factory unlocked and debranded, since you put a factory unlocked ROM on your phone when you debrand it.
BUT it's possible that your warranty is void now since modifying the software isn't covered by warranty. but i'm not sure about that.

Unlocking

I have a Telus Desire HD.
I used to have a Desire on Telus and was able to purchase an unlock code, worked 1st time.
I have had the Desire HD for about 2 months, want to unlock now.
I purchased unlock code from MobileinCanada, I have purchased unlocks codes in the past from them and they work fine.
The Desire HD I have tried on 4 attempts without success.
Question 1:
How many carrier unlock attempts can be done before device is bricked?
Question 2:
Do I have to root the device in order for carrier unlock to work?
I have already paid for the unlock, I would prefer not to root, any suggestions, I hope someone can answer question 1.
On the screen with the keypad, I get the following message "SIM service provider unlock PIN".
Does this mean the 8 digit unlock code will not work, do I have to input a telus code 1st
Help!!!
Please
I think if you call Telus and tell them you're going to europe for a while, they can provide you with a working unlock code... They've been doing this for a few months now!

I think you have to wait 3 months plus pay $75, most of the unlocker sites are $25.
If the unlocker sites will not work, I may have to resort to calling Telus, I did pay for device outright vs 3yr.

You can unroot it back and keep it unlocked by reflashing the original rom.
That is what i was going to say,
Root it run radio S-OFF then run the rru again job done.

hi
any one can help me to unlock my htc hd2 ????
What do you mean by "unlock"? Root access, debrand, or what?
Even sim-unlock?
I was wondering the same thing
For sim unlocking we use pda magician.unlocking.com as proved reliable codes & service for HTC & Samsung.
For CID unlocking just use a HardSPL as it bypasses it.
Security unlocking can be done via software & cables & can include CID unlock too ...

[Q]S-Off for the m9+ MTK device?

Anyone heard about M9+ S-Off method in development?
It would be very nice to have that so we can change carrier ID.
At the moment we can't change from chinese to asia wwe or Taiwan etc etc firmwares or just CIDs, and thus who has a chinese CID in the aboot partition is bound to get Chinese news on blinkfeed. (I've gathered some information and this is the situation: blinkfeed is working with carrier id of the phone and other language resources. Read about this on E8 and chinese m8 phones, but now there's a solution for this with custom rom and mod, look up in this forum, CleanSlate or Mod Sense Home...)
I'd be willing to donate if S-Off would become possible. Of course we don't have the kernel sources yet, so it's very improbable that someone would be working on it already, but let's just start a discussion about this.
UPDATES:
So what we know so far,
- there's the JCard method possible which needs a service or a JCard at home
- the bootloader is type ABoot
- no method yet for s-offing without JCard
- no kernel sources out yet for the phone
J card works.
so far, only java card works
Thanks good to know about JCard thing!
Hopefully when kernel sources will be out, some brute force method can be found to access the protected partition and flip it to S-Off.
It would be nice to have a method that can be done with only software and PC.
There's been a recent dump of kernel sources yesterday on http://www.htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads but not the m9pw yet. Hope they release it soon enough, so someone can look at it. Hopefully a hoard of M9+ users would be willing to donate for the one who brings such method. I'll be first in line to donate.
Maybe there's already a similar device with MTK and similar boot loading mechanism cracked?
Do someone know if there were any other HTC device with MTK chipset S-Offed without JCard, like S-Off with revone and such methods?
Not sure if the sunshine boys are going to be working on s off on the plus but those guys would probably be the ones who do it, their stomping ground is Qualcomm however
I have access to HTC Authorized service in my City. These guys already have J Card but unfortunately the don't have detailed guideline how to deal with M9 +
They said that in another MTK HTC devices there is a option in the bootloader mode (Sim lock) and they are doing official S off in this menu, but there was no Sim lock Menu in M9+ bootloader.
If someone knows how to deal with this issue I will continue my attempts for S Off.

Nice! What's your intentions? Do you want to try to convert your phone to another region's full firmware? There's some risk in that, we don't exactly know if the hardware from China and the other regions are fully the same and compatible, like the radio unit. I guess they are, I didn't have any issues running the phone on Asia WWE firmware or European, but I didn't (and couldn't because of S-On on my device) try a full conversion with all the S-On protected partitions of the phone. I only could flash boot/recovery/data and system, but there's a lot more of different partitions related to the hardware functionality.
Practically with s-off you can overwrite the CID (carrierid) to supercid (1111111 or something like that ) of your phone and thus you can convert flash any other regions full RUU firmware zip from 'fastboot oem rebootRUU' mode. Then you can receive OTAs of that different regions.
Otherwise being s-off means nothing much more than that opportunity.
Also probably you could unlock the sim lock to a certain phone company if your sim is bound to a phone company, on an S-Offed device you can do that. But I'm not sure how that's done.

As far as i understand - you connect the jcard, reboot in bootloader, and enter that command?
Thanks!
I have one from UAE. I did everything to s-off this device but no luck until now. It did not work with jcard. I have version 1.61.401.6 installed. Now, I see some people had luck with m9+ from other regions. I mean is it region related or something? I even did unlock my bootloader, installed twrp and rooted my device just to try that sunshine's method. Unfortunately sunshine's method did not work either. Now my question is,, If Taiwanese or Chinese versions can be s-off with jcard, how can I install their software version? Why can't I s-off my m9+ ? I really appreciate if people shared their s-off experiences.
Sorry for the ignorrance, but from where can I get Jcard? I see there a lot of people in here have it.
Also can a Java Card or Jcard be emulated on a PC?
