Who else got invited to Google Music Beta? - Xoom General

From the e-mail I got from Google, I've aparently been invited because I own the Xoom 3g, and am currently paying for 3g service from Verizon.
But whatever the reason, I got the invite.
I still haven't recieved the update for my Xoom yet, and I don't think you can get the Music app in the app store until the update, so i've been forced to try the beta in "Browser" which is a bunk.
As far as desktop goes, it works well, but on the Xoom, it lags a little, and will only play the music if the tab for the player is open. (which really I guess is to be expected, and why there is an app for it.)
Regardless, it is quite simple to use, and in itself, is a very simple layout. There isn't really anthing special, it reminds me of itunes (as far as strictly listening to music, not including the store and all the extra jazz.) They have what they call "Instant Mixes" which is pretty much the genious mix in apple, except it will only create a 25 song playlist.
One nice thing about it, is whatever player you choose it to upload your songs with, it carries over the playlists.
There is a "New and Recent" section beside Album, Song, Genre, and Artist like on the Xoom. Also, a small but nice selection of free songs that you can choose to have imported into your cloud when you sign in the first time.
I really will have to wait till I can test the app to make any final decisions on this.
As far as I'm concerned, cloud based music storage is pretty much useless to me. I can survive with 5-10 gigs stored onto my Xoom that I can listen too without ever needing to connect to the internet. (I don't need to use my 10$ a gig data from verizon for something that should be free) Once we get our SD slot working, this will become especially true. It is cool to be able to have your music anywhere in the world, but not if you think that you have to pay Google for this service, then pay for the data while using the service.
But I will go at it with an open mind for anyone that would find this of interest, because well, I guess it's part my duty since I recieved an invite. If you also recieved an invite please let me know what you think about it.

I got in the beta as well. The biggest thing for me when it comes to cloud music is not worrying about transferring music to my devices or computers anymore. I'm always worried about backing up my music and syncing across all my computers. Now if I reformat any of my devices be it tablet, phone or laptop I can get my music from anywhere and redownload it if needed.

No, only google can invite.

It is weird... i got on the Music page before the keynote and signed up for the Beta with the same email as the one my Xoom is connected to and I still haven't gotten anything.... kinda sucks.... maybe that caused everyone to assume we were just another user instead of Xoom users

See, I don't think you will get an invite just for owning a xoom..... Here is exactly how the e-mail inviting me was phrased (Please note, i did not sign up for an invite, i just got it)
Hello Motorola XOOM user,
We'd like to tell you about some changes to the Music player on your tablet. The latest app update now supports Music Beta, a new service from Google. As a Verizon Motorola XOOM user, you’ve been extended an early invitation to beta test this service.
Music Beta lets you store your personal music collection online and access it instantly without the hassle of wires or syncing.
Enjoy your music anywhere — listen on any web browser, your Motorola XOOM, or any other device running Android 2.2 or higher.
Save your favorite albums, artists, and playlists on your smartphone or tablet so you can keep listening even when you're not connected.
Create your own custom playlists or build them automatically from a single song.
Note also that is says Verizon Motorola XOOM user... I guess this could be explained by any 3g model, but I actually have my data active, so I imagined that's why I received the invite.

Not that I can see. I have yet to receive the 3.1 update, but I received the invite, signed up, and also downloaded the updated Music app from the market. I haven't uploaded any songs yet, but I can stream the two dozen or so tracks they gave me for free. Works well, pretty simple, audio quality is actually pretty decent - on the Xoom speakers, haven't tested on my Sennheiser headphones though.

Oh, so it's just an update to the stock music player I need?

I have active data on my 3G xoom w/ Verizon also, so it's weird they would pull random people, but I guess that may not be weird. I have 3.1 on my xoom after doing the force push update from BRD. I also have the new beta music app on both my tablet and my phone lol. I have not received an invite though...What I do like is the ability to get movies through the Android Market but I don't think that's part of this?
Oh well then

I pay for 3G service on my Xoom as well, and I haven't gotten an invite, or the dam update!
lol

Should be noted my 3g xoom has never had vzw service and I got the xoom invite email.

Well I guess they're doing some kind of random invite...

So i guess a good question is, have any WiFi Xoom owners gotten the email with out requesting an Invite?

At I/O, Google said that Music was a beta program with a limited audience initially: all attendees got an invite. There are two components: the new player, and the backend service. I believe they are independent of one another, such that you can download the Music Beta app in the Market but still not be admitted to the beta of the service.
Apologies if this was all already obvious: I just wanted to clarify for folks in case it wasn't clear as there are a few moving parts.

I believe you are correct. Anyone can download the updated Music app from the Market, but unless you got an invite and signed up, you can't use the whiz-bang features of the Music beta service.
On both my EVO and Xoom, I was able to update the app and signed into it thanks to the invite I received.

Ya I have activated 3g Xoom on Verizon so I am unsure as to WTF is going on lol

I have the 3G Xoom but do not pay for the service, and I've had it since day 1. I'm not rooted, and I have not received the 3.1 update yet.
I requested an invite for Music before the keynote Monday with my main gmail account. I have 2 other accounts tied to my xoom, but I initially signed into my xoom with my main account.
About 30 minutes ago, I got an invite to Music in one of the secondary accounts tied to my Xoom (one I did NOT request an invite with).
Currently uploaded about 500 songs, about 18k to go. This is exciting!
Now I just need my 3.1!

Well however they're doing it, I'm glad I got the invite as it works quite well. I don't know about other cloud services as I have not tried them, but the way all the music stored on the cloud and all that is stored on your XOOM blend together in the same app is sweet.
Unfortunately I am still waiting on my update. I just wanted to add that.

Got two invite e-mails (24 hours apart) so ok. But no 3.1 update.

So I sent my invite at 12 exactly. I really want an invitation. Has anyone been successful? It would be great for my transformer and my droid x.
Still waiting. Sent around the same time as you.

I sent mine in as well.
I think once you get it you will have invites to give out to others. I had several Google beta invites in the past. Gmail came with 100 invites, Wave had 5 invites, and Voice had 5 invites before they all opened up to the public.
I don't think time is a factor for their invites. I knew other people that never got Google Wave or Google Voice invites despite them sending in their requests before I did. They have a selection process that somewhat monitors what Google products you use. One exception was Google Wave beta testing. It was more like a mini application you had to send in for a request.

Was there an app for this already on the A500 ? Yesterday evening I turned on the tablet and right away it had an update from google music. I never noticed the widget before until I saw the update.
Right, the app is already on our tablets (which I linked to a few posts up) and if you visit the market, it might even tell you to update it - however the service - the cloud storage part - is by invite.
So, while you can use the app, it's local only.

I was swearing up and down after Engadget's review of this stuff this morning. They basically blamed Google for coming out with an app that doesn't meld with the ISP's outrageously stupid and unfair data tiers and caps. UNBELIEVABLE.
I have moved some albums into the a500 music folder from my computer. I looked everywhere on my tablet and cant find anything that I moved but I can see them in the folder on my computer what gives ?

That and I don't have to copy my music across many devices anymore...
I tried that approach but it only registers once and says only registered... Music is my favorite passtime it would make things alot easier
...
I got my invite today. I registered for it as soon as the invite link went live the day of Google I/O. I'm here at work so I haven't had a chance to play with it yet. I did active it though and when you're in activating it, it gives you the option of some free songs depending on the genre you like. Hopefully I can upload some of my music tonight and have a full report on this later.
Sounds good. Grats.
Even though I requested an invite, I won't use the service. I have all my music on my tab.
I got my invite yesterday. Deleted the free songs (um no thanks for the 100 songs I won't listen too).
There is a limit to 20,000 songs, found out yesterday my entire library is 29,000 plus songs.
Takes FOREVER to upload songs, BUT surprisingly there is WMA support in the cloud. They must be re-compressing stuff during the upload.
It's a pretty cool thing, but Audiogalaxy is MUCH faster.
Use the Amazon Cloud Music app. available right now and works just as well, if not better.

Inherently, browsers aren't built to be upload tools...so I'd imagine it would take weeks to upload ones library. I anticipate that but man the convenience afterwards will be so great.
How long did you guys have to wait for yours, out of interest? I requested an invite some time last week.
Google Music doesn't offer any kind of FTP/SSH support?
I got mine today too, started my library upload about 30 minutes ago (up to 115 songs out of 3.5k)
I've tried it out on my phone via 3G and on my Transformer on wifi, and the audio quality is great.
I got my invite this afternoon, and I registered within two hours after it was announced at Google IO.
I thought perhaps getting my Transfomer yesterday might have triggered the invite, but perhaps it was just a coincidence.
BTW, the audio on this tablet is shockingly good! I always felt like the audio on my G-Tablet was too low. I did not think I would ever listen to music on a tablet, but I really enjoyed listening to some free Cab Calloway today.

They give you an app that you can link to your my music folder or itunes. The app will upload automatically whenever you add songs as well, or manually or at certain times depending on how you set it.
ISP's generally also limit the hell out of upload speeds as generally upload is more for their business plans that need to serve content and they don't want people misusing the consumer plans for the same purpose

This is when I wish I lived in a FIOS area and could take advantage of 20-50 mbps upload speeds. Uverse only gets me 1.5
In keeping with this being a Transformer forum:
It works flawless on the Transformer. Sound quality is top notch and streaming is very fast. I even tethered the tablet to 3g and it was still fast with no audible loss in quality.
I uploaded about 10 or so albums in an hour or 2 so it wasn't bad...but my music library is about 120 gigs so I'll need to pick and choose what to load.
Overall, it's a MAJOR convenience not having to load music on my tablet or phone anymore!

[Q] Google Music Beta

How long did it take your guys' music to be uploaded into the cloud. I have a little over 1000 songs and its taking FOREVER. I have a slow internet connection, but this just seems ridiculous.
It takes very long to upload.
From engadget:
engadget.com/2011/05/11/google-music-beta-walkthrough-what-it-is-and-how-it-works-vide/
The bandwidth problem
And this, folks, is the elephant in the room, and it's the same one seen in Amazon's closet. A near-limitless cloud of music sounds stellar -- particularly while it's still priced at $0.00 -- but the toll it'll take on your broadband limits cannot be ignored. 20,000 songs is a ton of information, even if every last one is encoded at a measly 128kbps. Let's say each of your tunes is 3MB -- that's most likely a conservative figure, but we'll use it for the sake of this example. 20,000 of those lands you at around 60GB. For the average broadband user, it'll take days -- if not a full week or so -- to upload that much material, and if you're using a vanilla Time Warner Cable connection, it'll paralyze your web surfing all the while. Granted, you can manually throttle your Music uploads within Music Manager, but doing so will greatly increase the time it takes to get your library in the cloud.
About 5 days

I have over 20,000 songs and quite honestly I didn't pay attention to how fast it was going. I just started it and forgot about it.
Can someone pm me for an invite? I'm really interested in this Google music, but I heard its invite only.
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk
It's invite only from Google directly if I'm not mistaken. I think I put my name on a list that I was interested a long time ago.
Only took me about 14 hours to upload about 1,200 songs. Started it right before bed, woke up, and went to a class and by the time I got back to my house it was done.
I have 24,000 songs.. just started uploading earlier today using my work computer. Our network is pretty fast, so we'll see. It uploaded about 300 songs within the first 10 mins tho.
Is it a google server thing or the limit of user's broadband? I have Verizon FIOS 30MB upload, haven't used the app yet, but was considering it. Maybe I'll pass.

Thanks for the responses. My internet speeds with at&t are pathetic right now so it makes sense for it to be taking so long i guess. Im probably going to leave at&t. Also, I dont want to leave my laptop plugged in overnight while uploading the music because i dont want to mess up my battery.
it took me a couple days to upload my library (2500 songs) to the amazon cloud player... it sucked, but eventually got done... I have an invite to Google music, but I'm not sure if I want to go through the pain of uploading all that again... (I'm running plain old at&t DSL)

I did the same thing to get into the Music Beta, but I can't connect my 10.1v to the same network I used to get into the Beta, so I haven't been able to update the app on my tablet.
Is there any way to get the app updated (APK maybe?) short of getting my tablet onto a North American proxy?
-EDIT-
I'm searching for the APK, have found multiple hits but I mainly see APKs that might be a bit out of date.
I simply attach an HDD to my router and stream stuff over wlan / internet.
Here we have the so called fritz.box , it can do that.

Best MP3 Cloud service

What is the best free mp3 cloud service? Amazon cloud has a nice layout and streams nicely but only gives 5gb free. Microsoft skydrive gives 25gb but the player is pretty crappy and takes awhile to load. Are there any other free cloud drives similar to amazon with more memory?
Google Music. Free. Up to 20,000 songs. Listen on any computer or any Android device. Enough said.
Audiogalaxy IMHO, but you have to keep your computer on to stream your music.

It does say "Music Beta is available free for a limited time." So they are at least implying their intent to charge for the service. If that actually comes to be is anybody's guess.

trying to be optimistic hahaha
Haven't seen mspot mentioned. It's pretty good, with some odd restrictions (the music has to all come from the same computer, though it does get stored on their server).
I didn't realize you could stream with skydrive.
I really enjoy amazon cloud. It has web and android apps. It has very simple transfer from client to cloud and back. And every time I buy any music from amazon, it's right there for me. Size isn't an issue as I really only need my favorite songs accessable frm everywhere. 5gb would be enough but I easily buy an album a year which will keep my storage at 20gb.

Google has already stated at I/O that Google Music will not be a fully free service.
Amazon MP3 has a fast uploader, and if you buy a digital copy, there is no upload time at all - just hits your music library almost instantly.
I think the player is clunky and the UI kind of slugish on our phones and the Moto Xoom.
The playlist shuffle feature BLOWS on amazon
Google Music has a really great interface, well integrated with the device, but that damn uploader is so EFING SLOW!
Shuffle actually shuffles and does it nicely.

for a year only. Not sure if you'll have to buy another one to keep 20 Gb, but you'll have to pay for extra 15Gb. BTW the music that you bought at Amazon and store in their cloud does not count toward your total. That is another plus for them.
I do not think Google up-loader is slow. Last time I put two albums in my music folder and switched to Google Music site, they already were present there.
I like both services and wish for a Black/dark theme for Amazon player.
I vote for Google Music, it took me a week non stop to upload 9000+ songs and I have a 1.5Mbps upload speed at home.
I haven't found an easy way to upload via Amazon unless it has changed since I signed up when it first came out. You have to upload each album/song manually which is unlike google music which scans your folder that you select and uploads all the compatible music to the cloud, at it's own damn pace.
