About to get my Incredible replaced... - Droid Incredible General

So as the topic title says, I'll be going to Verizon this upcoming Saturday to get my phone replaced. I've already posted a little bit about it in an unrelated thread and I need some more information to make some preparation. Here are some of my questions:
1) The reason why I'm getting it replaced is due to my phone having a semi-severe backlight bleeding. For those who own a SLCD Incredible, how many of you have backlight bleeding and how bad is it?
2)I did a full back up of my phone using Nandroid and was planning on restoring it on to my soon-to-be new phone. However, I came across a post that said that it is not a good idea to restore the backup on to a different phone because the backup also contains phone ID and whatnot. If this is the case, what is my next best option?
3) Is it normal for dinc's screen to get hot? I was streaming some music through 3g today with the phone in my pocket and the screen became incredibly hot to touch.
That's it for now... thanks for reading.

#1. I haven't had a backlight bleeding issue, *knock on wood*
#2. Honestly, no clue.
#3. Again, haven't had this issue *more knocking on wood*
I meant good by the post, sorry if it sounds quick and uninformative.

Any possibility it was the battery side you were feeling get hot, I know if I have done a lot of processor stuff like downloading and such the battery side will get pretty warm, not smoking hot but darned warm, kind of freaked me out. Never the screen though, but my screen is an AMOL screen too.

Best practice would be to use something such as Titanium Backup to backup and restore your apps, SMS Backup+ for your texts, and back up your contacts to either Google or your sd card.
Also, a different baseband version *may* alleviate your heat issue.

It was definitely the screen... unless the battery was somehow heating up the screen?

Unless you know for sure that the previous phone will never be refurbished and sent back out, you can't restore your old nandroid. that contains the phone's unique android id number that some apps use to send information. if you reflash it onto your new phone, two phones will have that number which could lead to issues in the future.
i read about this somewhere i'm not crazy haha

Ah yes, that's what I read, too. I just wanted to make sure.
I went to Verizon today just to be safe and they were all out of dincs and suggested that I call customer service. I called Verizon and the CS agent told me that the warehouse she is assigned to was all out, too, then transferred me to a tech agent who can send it out from another warehouse... and guess what? His warehouse was all out, too. Luckily, I'm under extended warranty, so they'll ship it as soon as they get one in. I didn't realize dincs were so popular.

I have noticed my phone getting hot and I thought it was either the battery getting hot or CPU use or something but could it really be the screen? I have a slcd. Anybody know what makes it hot. I know there are half a million factors on making it hot tthough.

i tried today no luck. on my 4th replacement phone and asked if they are replacing the incredible with any other phone since ive had so many problems. put me on hold for 5 mins came back and told me i could take my wifes upgrade or ship out from a different warehouse, or wait for an early upgrade in december. a coworker of mine got her incredible replaced with droid x.

Looks like no more Incredibles are going to be manufactured anymore? The representative told me that there wont be anymore new replacements so the best I could do is either get a new phone or get another recertified.
Oh and the newest replacement also has a pretty severe backlight bleeding.

'Patchy' backlight - what happen?

I've noticed recently the backlight on my HD2 seems to have suffered some sort of malfunction or something. Might be a bit of a strong way of describing it perhaps.
Basically imagine if you have a blank white screen/image showing on the phone, there's a couple of bits on it that always stay in the same place where the brightness is not the same as the rest. I'm certain it's only been like this recently but no idea why.
You can only really notice it with very pale or bits of white on the screen but am wondering:
1 - if anyone else has this,
2 - how it's happened,
3 - anything I can do about it,
In particular if it's a fault with the phone (as I'm certain the phone has never been knocked and it definitely has never been dropped or pressed hard etc), is this something I could get done under warrantee.
If it is, can I get it fixed on warrantee even with no receipt since I bought it on Ebay? Every single HD2 is still in its warrantee period so I hope they could do.
Thanks!
I have the same, they advised me to contact support, but i kinda neglected it for the time being.
I have the same kind of spot in the middle of my screen, i only really see it when the screen is white, annoying tho :/
I dont like the idea of having to send the phone out and missing it for a few weeks :'(
I had the same problem on my device so I called HTC and they picked it up, repaired it and sent it back. Well they sorted out this particular problem (by replacing the LCD panel) but, alas, created few more. The buttons were not placed properly, the body was damaged and etc. So Angry and Disappointed Me called them up and they picked it up again. This time they replaced the whole unit (the actual body if I am not mistaken) and sent it back. Finally I was glad to have my phone back after two weeks.
Funny enough most of the HTC employees that I spoke to had very poor English. And I spoke with quiet a few of them. Luckily I am talented at mimicking broken English and didn't have much problem getting my message across. I'd imagine for most people it should be very difficult to explain their problem and arrange repairs.
Thanks for the replies.
Is it possible to do this without a sales receipt and still not have to pay? I don't think I should have to pay since it's not very old at all but I can't prove it's actually my phone I guess.
Did you just contact them via the XDA website or something?
I got the same issue. Most annoying when reading long emails or articles. I thought about sending it in for repair but I have voided my warranty already and don't want to be missing my hd2 for a couple weeks and get hit with a massive bill. I think it has something to do with the layers in the LCD not being completely flat. But I havent got that far in my explorations of this phone, maybe I will on my next trip.
You should contact HTC support by calling at the number for your country that you can find from the HTC website.
They can do everything with the phone's serial no. At least that's how it worked for my Kaiser I got on ebay too when I had a prob with it.

Hmmm, good point. I have a custom rom on it so mine probably would be void too right? If I change it back to the original rom it should be ok though presumably?
Thanks anyway - glad this is not me.
I am also seeing this on my HD2. It is very faint and only really noticeable on white screens. Once you know it is there though you can't help but keep looking for it
To be honest I can put up with it as most of the time you can't actually see it, for example I can't see it now due to the keyboard being up.
I'd be interested to know if anyone in the UK sends their phone off for repair as I might do the same. I can't be without my phone though, it would be like loosing my arm!

I have a small crack on the glass of my HD2 as well between the bottom of the phone and the power / end call key. It looks like a small hair stuck under the button Not sure if they would replace the glass for me as well if I sent it off?
I got my phone from O2 so I'm wondering if I'd have to go to O2 for repair or direct to HTC, maybe I could do both
Anyway, for now I think I'll refrain from sending it off unless it really starts annoying me. A bit of a pain though
I've emailed HTC as well to ask about this.....

G2 Shut off by itself this morning and won't turn on.

Early this morning, I unplugged my G2 from the outlet before leaving to work. The damn thing just shut off and won't turn on again...
I tried the power button, the optical pad button+power, took out the battery and back in multiple times, many times plugged in and not plugged in.
What a POS phone, I mean we get a 1.3gb usable space not the advertised 4gb, it also "corrects" itself with a hidden mirror OS so it's very difficult to root, plus the damn loose hinges and the screen ribbon exposed when the hinges are fully opened, the screen also has a very subtle yellow hue, plus reports of random reboots, market problem where google goggles won't install, live wallpapers crashing and freezing up, and finally the POS just dying on me when I need it for work.
If you have a G2 with no problems (yeah right) then congrats. I'm really considering withdrawing from the extended contract and going with the iFail.
Sorry for the rant, just a little pissed off and the customer service lady was a real *****.

Yup. Oh BTW. The e39 is also a POS.
You're not alone, man. Between this and the Vibrant headache, I fear my days with T-Mo are numbered. It was a fun decade, but it doesn't look as if they plan to change their course anytime soon.
Unless, of course, they want to start carrying the Desire HD?
We'll see what G2 #2 brings tomorrow. If it's more of the same problems, I will be a disappointed man.
This happened to me too. But I managed to power it back on after fiddling with removing the battery.
Yeah my g2 refused to turn on a couple of times now without taking out the battery and putting it back in.

Sweet observation. You should stay away from both then.
I don't blame you. T-Mobile's customer service has been **** for me too. First they tell me I can exchange it at the store only to have the store tell me no, sorry you have to ship it back. Then they make me pay for shipping, too. As far as the G2 goes, it broke while in my pocket, so no thanks. Maybe they'll rework the hinges soon. Otherwise, I'm just gonna use this crappy ass G1 until the Desire HD comes around.
mines shut off this morning.. first, my on-screen Android Keyboard went missing.. so I shut it off, turned it back on. Then it asked me if I'd give access permission to Google App Engine?? Are they going to start monitoring my apps now?? Just asking? Don't know what that does.. anyways, so after that.. my G2 just sat there til I wen t to go check the time and my phone was off! tried to turn it back on and it wouldn't! So I took the battery out and rebooted. Its on now but this is the second time this week! And not to mention my hinges are starting to become an issue as well! Not cool! They need to bring the Desire HD over so I can replace my G2 with that!
Yeah it happen to my g2 as well. This phone is really not making my android experience any good. tmo need to address these issues ASAP, and i work for them!!! im going to check the "known issues" on the g2 when i get into work 2mrow and see wat is up with this.
i suggest you all who is having these issues to give tmo a call so they have enough calls from customers to generate a ticket with HTC and lvl3 techs to address these issues. Just because tmo is not on these forums and reading about customers issues.
my phone turned off yesterday and also this morning. idk if maybe me trying to snooze the alarm accidently turned it off so im putting my phone in a diff location tonight and checking tomorrow-- if its off tomorrow im calling tmo asap!
My G2 just shut off itself when I was replying to a text. I pulled the battery and reseated it and try turning on but it does not do anything. If I connect it to the charger, the orange charging led just flashes on and off. It's been 20 minutes and I have not been able to turn it back on.
OMG, the desire's symptom comes to G2
Mine as well.
Well my G2 just turned it self off as well today. It was unresponsive to the power button. Took battery out and re-installed and powered back on and has been working ever since but thats just not right.
Edit: Not sure if this is worth anything but this happened shortly after I put the market widget on my home. I've had Beautiful Widget running for a week so don't think that was the problem but not even sure if the market one caused it but thought it might be worth mentioning.
Mine has also soft reboot back to the G2 screen 2 or 3 times now. Dunno what's going on
Sent from my T-Mobile G2
I have had this happen twice. In fact, my phone is in that state now. I am going to the TMO store. However, if I decide to return the phone, it isn't for this issue alone. As a side note, I thought this had happened to me with the TMO phone I was playing with in store before I bought mine.
If you take the battery out, wait about 10seconds, and re-install it you will be able to power the phone back up. Anyway, this behavior could be due to either a bad part or a driver problem.
*UPDATE*
Sadly, after talking to the TMO rep at the store, I elected to return the phone rather than exchange. While they wouldn't say how many, they have gotten "several" phones back because of this. My hats off to the Seattle TMO store as they made the return non-hassle and because I was returning it due to a defect, I didn't have to pay the restocking fee.

Sound advice, especially regarding the e39.
Hey guys,
After another freeze, I was able to actually connect via ADB. The shell was working fine.
Anyways, I did a logcat, and I saw the attached code looping.

It just keeps looping on these audio logs.
Any thoughts?
Anyone else get logcats similar or different than this?

I had the same issue with my phones screen would just shut off and I would have to pull the battery out just to get it back on. I called tmobile and the answer I get is "that is not a known issue but def we will look into it". So all I did was go back to a tmobile store and trade it out for another one. Hopefully this won't happen again.

Broken Screen

So my wife dropped my streak down the stairs the other day and the screen is F'ed. The phone works, and if I can remember where certain icons are the apps will still launch, but the screen is all funny colors and flickers and changes position all the time.
Has anyone replaced the digitizer on these before? Im thinking of calling Rogers first....and to be honest if they willing to replace it I might just hold out for a couple of months to see if the SGSII hits our markets here in Canada. Technically a pretty awesome phone I think.
Wondering what is left for the Streak now too? Although im not sure ill ever be satisfied with anything less than a 5" screen.
Called Rogers and surprisingly they are replacing the phone. Didn't tell them it was dropped of course, and there is no obvious physical damage.
My primary concern now is that the phone is running Steve's 1.9.0 firmware. The screen is pretty F'ed as stated previously so they might just turn it on see that its screwed and not investigate further. But, to be on the safe side id like to try and flash it back to stock. I suppose ill do some reading before asking too many "this has already been asked" questions, but if ive got some simple questions I hope others will help out. Any help is always appreciated.
There are lots of threads on how to replace the screen. It doesn't seem too bad. I'm just waiting on tools to do mine.

warning: shoddy touchscreen -- phone unusable

This will be my last week with this phone, I've had it since April. Everything was fine until about a month ago when the touchscreen started to go all wonky. Actually that's not true, I'm disappointed it can't even use LWP without the whole thing studdering, or how the bootloader was locked down for half the time I've had it.
I tried flashing a new rom, wiping data, installing the 'touchscreen booster' app (which worked well for a few days, but the screen has kept deteriorating). Nothing worked. I never dropped this phone the entire time I've had it. It has a defect, and I'm not the only one that has it. Motorola's forum has a thread 10 pages long with people talking about the ****ty build on their screen.
I got this phone from the USA (I'm from Canada) at full price and unlocked it, I have no warranty -- my fault. Anyways, I'm not sure why I wrote this, but this will be my last motorola phone.
tl;dr If anybody is thinking of buying this phone, I advise you to make sure you have a warranty, or better yet, don't buy it.
get a warranty, yeah its a possibily. And yes every phone has issues. I LOVE my atrix and would not trade it for any other phone at that time. Every batch of phones are going to contain a bad set. Be happy its your motorola Atrix with its touchscreen, and not your Toyota breaks.
Ugh first world problems.

.... you lost your warranty.... cause you unlocked it? If that's the case, you do realize that unlocking/rooting has to be proven to be the cause of the issue, right? If you rooted and unlocked your phone, and the screen has taken a crap.... then i don't see any possible way they can deny a claim. Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act. It'd be like buying a new intake for your car, your radio take a sh*t, and they'd say "Nope... you replaced your engine intake, so your warranty is void and you have to pay for the replacement". It can't be done.
As for the other things... uuh.... you knew the bootloader was locked when you bought it... and nobody ever had any word that the bootloader was going to be OFFICIALLY unlocked by anybody. As for live wallpaper... i've never had an issue with it, although i rarely use it since i don't see the point in wasting battery life to have a bit of animation to my background that, unless i'm staring at my home screens for extended periods of time, i never see.

It sounds like something you flashed screwed up your PDS partition. If you have a backup of it, try restoring it.

got it in canada before it came out from another country, called motorola and they said I have no warranty since I'm not in the country I bought it from. not related to unlocked/flashing.
I accept responsibility for not having the warranty, it's my fault. I just want to warn people that there is an issue with a (albeit probably small) subset of atrix's produced.

Looks like it's time for a vacation to the states.
As Jotokun posted, this issue is known to be caused by the PDS partition being corrupting after flashing. Hope you made a backup of everything before you started. No? Was that the Atrix's fault too?
My cousin who bought this phone in May has no problems whatsoever. He's 100% happy with it and never stopped boasting about it until i finally bought it and was amazed by it. The funny this is that we're still on stock firmware, waiting for a stable CM7. Can't wait!

The current CM7 Beta is extremely stable - I've been running it for several weeks now and have had absolutely 0 issues. the only things not working are the fingerprint scanner and WebTop. small potatoes if you ask me... I average 2-3 days per charge on my battery on this version of CM7. I use the kernel that it comes with at 1.1Ghz - no need for anything higher than that as you will see NO real world gains - only gains you will see are in benchmark apps... who cares about that...

i use the 1.3 ghz kernel because between my 5 screens full of widgets and my live wallpaper, the 1.1 ghz kernel caused me to have a slight lag after changing screens. 1.3 ghz kernel gives me a completely smooth experience, no lag anywhere. my phone doesn't overheat either which happened in earlier versions of the kernel.

Sounds great! Will probably take the plunge next week or sooner, just itching to try it! I'm used to the fingerprint unlock for ages now, don't know if it will feel the same without it (for now!) Battery life on Motoblur crap is not good for me, although it has constant 3g and Wifi at home with sync 24/7 and i do heavily use it. Actually, scratch that, the battery is still awesome for how much i use it!

if your cousin is happy with the phone then i'm happy for him. but i didn't have a good experience with it. all i'm doing is sharing my thoughts, no need to get defensive.
i also experienced this weird grey ring that appears about 1mm away from the screen. it has steadily gotten worse over the last 3 months.
tried the PDS partition fix, didn't do anything. thanks for the suggestion though.

Actually it looks like you're the one whose feelings got hurt. First, your post's title "Warning: shoddy touchscreen - phone unusable"? Is this your phone or the Atrix, in general? Second, you warn who? Somebody who might buy this phone at a full price from another country and doesn't have warranty because of that?
And then you end your cry with "You better get warranty on this phone, or better not buy it" crap... because of...? From what I know any Atrix comes with 1 year full manufacturer's warranty so that shouldn't be a concern.
If you're having problems with your phone, just say it that way "my Atrix is crap". I'm perfectly fine with mine the way it came out of the box, afterall it's just a phone I'll probably change in a year or so.

no need to get so emotional. my atrix is crap. i'm letting people know that some of these phones have an issue. it's probably a small percentage, but they should be wary if they are getting it with no warranty. i'm trying to help people out.
i'm not sure why it matters so much to you. if yours works fine then i'm happy for you. but i had a lot of issues and other people have as well.
The issue with the touchscreen going wonky is caused by a corrupt PDS partition. There's a thread with a PDS image that you can fastboot over to your phone if you didn't back up your PDS partition.
Happened to me when I was jumping around from ROM to ROM constantly. Lost use of the capacitive buttons and the touchscreen was completely uncalibrated. To make your life easier, just don't sbf back and lose your software unlock. I was not able to fastboot to the PDS after sbf until I did the unlock again even though my phone was already unlocked.

I am very disappointed with Google

To whomsoever it may concern. Yes that's what my state of mind is right now.
I will begin from the beginning then.
So heard on 4th October 2016 that google is launching it's Pixel phones. Couldn't have been more excited with the news as I am a big android fan boy. I had been using the Nexus 6p then, so the news of the Pixel phones was really pleasing to me.
I wait for the Pixels to get launched in India. 26th October 2016 is the date. I pre-order my Pixel XL very silver 128 GB before hand and receive the handset on 26th! Very happy!!
I haven't ever used a better phone than the Pixel XL. The smoothest android experience. Period.
So a month passes by. The phone does overheat from time to time but other than that it worked fine. My "rock solid" Pixel XL gets about 40 GB full. One fine day, while I was trying to open a PDF from my drive, the device freezes and reboots. Nothing to worry, sometime android does that, I think to myself. Same day, Gmail freezes and the phone reboots. Then the Camera freezes and it reboots. Now I started to see a pattern. Tried uninstalling apps one by one, to pin point the root cause. Found nothing. Tried Safe Mode. Still it would freeze and reboot. Finally, made my peace with a factory reset. The phone started behaving. I told myself that I must be some rogue app.
This cycle continues again when the phone reaches that 40 GB mark. It would freeze and reboot. Factory reset once again. It works fine.
So I start suspecting the phone internal memory. I fill up the around 80 GB with random videos and music. The restarts start happening like clockwork.
Come 6th December 2016, and I receive the 7.1.1 update. Everything goes smooth. The phone acts normal, for sometime at least. I call up Google Support on the 8th and the guy tells me to take my phone to the service center.
Moments after, I see my phone restarting. It boots up and it's sitting on my table. In about five minutes, while lying idle on the table, it reboots. And this time, it reboots to boot-loader. I try to start the phone with the power key and the volume keys by choosing the right option. It boots back to boot-loader. Doesn't load up android. So somehow my phone was soft bricked just sitting idle on the table.
I am not new to the fastboot mode and decide to flash the stock rom. However, there is this issue that i suddenly see. The fastboot screen on my phone says Baseband : N/A and my bootloader is locked! The only option I see to get android up and running is using stock recovery and sideloading the Stock ROM, which should have worked as Google Stock ROMS are signed and might have not need unlocked bootloader(I did my research). I select recovery, and surprise surprise! The phone says recovery can't be loaded, press any key to go back!!
So now my phone has no OS, no baseband, no recovery with a locked bootloader! And i don't know how it happened!
I take the phone to the service center today around 11 am. They can't make sense of what happened. They say they would keep the phone for sometime. I get a call from them around 4, which was like half an hour back. The guy tells me there is a power button issue and another hardware issue(which he doesn't specify) and tells me they will keep the phone for 2 days. And repair it!
WHAT!?! WHY THE HELL ARE YOU REPAIRING MY PHONE GOOGLE!?! It's a new phone, not even 2 months old! And it doesn't come cheap! For the price amount I would expect it to work flawlessly!! I ask the service guy for replacement unit, and he says it is more than 14 days old, and gives me all terms and conditions! The problems that I had with this phone couldn't have been foreseen!! Till the time the internal storage gets to about 30 percent full the restarting issue did not show itself.
I expect a replacement unit or a full refund. Because this is just not fair! Not really happy with you Google. Thanks!
P.S.: thanks for reading this.
TL;DR
Cliff notes?
I am not getting it! You mean that the phone you had, had no hardware problems? So if its software only, then why did you submit the phone at service centre at first place? And in case they are offering you a repair service, or a new phone, what is the problem with that? From the sound of it it does sound like a hardware problem anyway, repetitive problems are never software. In fact you should be rather thankful that they accepted the phone and offering you a free service, cause a lot of reviews say that HTC service centre is asking money for a phone which is just one month old and sorts like that.
And you probably are one unlucky fella where the phone might have come with a hardware problem, cause most seem happy with theirs anyway. I am not defending Pixel or its ridiculous price point anyway.
Honestly what's the difference? If they fix it and it's working again then it should be no different than a new unit. unless you've damaged the device and wanted to get a new one with no damage I don't understand.
So if you get a new car from a dealer and it has an issue you would demand a new car instead of letting them repair it? Sounds pretty dumb to me.

Guarantee this is caused by a bad memory chip. The only way to fix it is to replace the chip (which I highly doubt can be done at a service center) or the motherboard. I had a Nexus 4 that had the same issue. Eventually I could not even write a new system image at all.
At least demand a written explanation of what was done to correct the problem so if it continues after being repaired you can demand a new unit. If they are replacing the board you should be good to go.
So you are angry that Google are fixing the device for you at no charge to yourself? Things go wrong sometimes, sounds like Google are looking after you nicely.
You will get your phone back in the same condition you gave it to them - with the issues resolved.
Or
If they can't fix it, they will replace it.
What's the issue?

He wants a new phone. I understand. From my experience when things like this go wrong like this they keep going wrong. It is a phone not a new car. I am surprised they did not give him a new phone and call it a day.

Agree
Pretty sure that the NAND chips are faulty. That is why after that chip gets written with data, phone starts to act up.
It may not be easy to replace just the faulty chip. Either they will replace the whole logic board or give you a new piece.

It is a hardware problem only, the phone worked fine till the 40 GB or so mark. And yeah, seem to feel unlucky about this now.
Also, I am not bashing HTC for this, they were pretty nice and they are doing their job. I understand that. Just not happy about the situation I am in that's all.

I wish i would have damaged the device just so that I would have something to blame this on.
And as for the car issue, you would want a new car, won't you? They will indeed repair it, however, a customer asking for a new car which works doesn't sound dumb to me.

The problem is when they eventually return the phone, it would be hard for me to understand if the problem persists until I get a PC in front of me and fill up the device. And the problem is pretty random too. Thanks for the reply though.
No problem. Been in similar shoes. You are not getting anything for free here.. It is one of the most expensive phones out there and you paid for a new device. Not one that has been reopened after being assembled. Check it carefully for scratches after getting it back.
I do not even like my car being worked on. Nothing is as perfect as when it comes from the factory.

Got a faulty Pixel XL, issue with the logic board(based on what i have read on this discussion so far), not really happy with HTC opening my new phone and repairing it. I paid for a new phone and I want a new phone which works! I know I am whining a bit.

You read my mind!! Totally agree!!:good:
At least it will be fixed. I purchased my Nexus 4 from a reseller so Google refused to warranty it even though it was completely sealed and new when purchased. Google hates resellers, which I understand the reason, but it is not a good policy to have.

It surely is not a good policy to have. And with the pixel devices the resellers were a part of the launch process. It was not like we had to wait for a few days after it was available online. It was almost the same time. I hope i get my device as soon as possible in working condition, because as I mentioned earlier, I love the phone. Also I have been using a prehistoric Nokia 1100 which I found in some corner of my house as I don't have any other back up device currently.
I'm just impressed that Google had a service center in Bangalore.
Yeah sucks. Let us know how it goes.
