Throwing in the Towel on the A7 - A7 General

After spending much of the past 24 hours trying to install both eLocity's latest firmware update (from 2/24/11) and DexMod 1.3 (so I can utilize Android Marketplace) I am probably going to give up and return my A7 to the retailer before my 30 days are up. Thank you to Dexter and everyone else who posted such informative and useful instructions on the A7 forum. I am perplexed as to why I was not successful in accomplishing the update and modification. I really do like the A7 and hate to return it, but whats the sense of owning a Android device if you can't utilize the Marketplace. Duh! I would even be willing to pay a nominal fee to a honest, tech-savvy individual to modify/update my A7 for me. Thanks again everyone, looks like I'll be shopping for a tablet thats a little more user-friendly.

Just my 2 cents... There is not eLocity (Stream TV Network) problem
Google denied Market at some tablets. G considered that their OS version 2.X is not compatible with tablets.
These tablets do not have Market "out-of-box":
Viewsonic G Tablet
Malata ZPad
Advent Vega
Archos (all versions)
etc...
Idk why Galaxy Tab has market "out-of-box". May be Samsung proved Google that it's big phone)))

Try nameing the file Update. Do not add the.dot zip, holding down the power button until the third line of text is seen then release will get you into program mode.. selling a tegra tablet to get anything other than another tegra is like going backwards...

Where are you located? I'm. Sure if there is a member here local to you, they'd be willing to help you out.

I'm enjoying my A7 but, I do have to give a certain amount of blame to Stream for the lack of user friendliness the device presents. There are all sorts of documentation out there for companies to reference when designing an Android device, giving them an outline of what will work. The choice to implement a code structure or hardware features that do not work or require a work-around is directly the fault of Stream, as testing should have revealed the issues.
Take a look at how long Dexter has been working on the mod many of us are using, the feedback people give after putting it through the "real world" challenge and then the subsequent updates from Dexter...if Stream did the testing and verifications on this product from concept to creation to now...someone needs to be fired or doesn't care. Without detracting from Dexter's efforts or anyone else contributing on this board but, if the customer base can put so many fixes in place:Why can't the OEM? Why are they so slow in comparison on responses? Why don't their updates fix the most common issues? How did they allow themselves to release a tablet without a proper OS and fail to do better funtionality testing?
I'm glad their are folks like Dexter out here and forums like XDA otherwise decent hardware like this would allow companies to seperate us from our dollars on inflated claims of fuctionality and force us to jump through hoops to get a remedy.

A7 Towel
Here are some quick things to know/try that work for me -
1. SD card must be formatted as FAT format, FAT32 is fine
2. Mod file is named update.zip in sd card, do not put it in any folder in the SD card
3. When you are powered down, if you hold the power button in for about 15 seconds and then release and then hold in again for a few seconds you will see, hold in for another 5 seconds to go to boot menu, immediately hold in for another 5 seconds and then release, you should see a android character, tap on home icon on right and it should go into a boot menu
4. Use the buttons on the tablet (home, etc on the right) to page down and up the list of selections. Top 2 buttons on the right are up and down. Second to bottom icon is select.
5. Scroll to "apply sdcard:update.zip"
6. Select that option (second to bottom icon on right of screen)
it should now apply the update.zip on your sd card. It could take a while.
If there are any errors then the update.zip file may be corrupted. All updates are over 90MB in size except for the patch that Dexter sent recently which is around 3MB.
Let us know if this works.

Thanks for the responses
I have done several times the instructions some of you have responded back with and watched several posts on YouTube also. Yes my card is formatted to Fat32 and yes I used a capital U on Update.zip. I have followed the instructions to a "t" for installing DexMod and Elocity's own instructions on their website in regards to the 2/24/11 update. My A7 simply would not recognize and open the SD card file and would then abort the program. I'm simply at a point where how much more of my time do I want to spend spinning my wheels on the A7 tablet in order to have access to the Android Marketplace. Thanks again everyone.

Please see my response at bottom.

A7 issue
sorry to hear that. I suspect your update.zip file is probably not being recognized as a zip file. mine is named update.zip, no uppercase anything. Sometimes there can be a hidden extension of another .zip so the system sees it as update.zip.zip
I downloaded the mod and renamed mine on my pc and then copied it directly to the microsd card. Sorry to hear about the time its taken you so far. As I said earlier I would be happy to work with you if you wish.

just to clarify, you can't really install the latest feb 24 update from elocity AND dexters elocitymod rom. Unless, that is, you take the mods that dexter has done and apply them to the latest elocity update and regression test it, debug it, etc... elocity did a fair job of putting out a cheap android tablet. they made some sacrifices on the hardware side - no multitouch and no hi res screen, but for the price, it's hard to beat. and dexter's mod makes the a7 infinitely more useful. have you tried other microsd cards? you can get cheap 2gb and 4gb ones at target or bestbuy. if those don't work, you can just return them. lots of people have been using dexter's elocitymod successfully. without it, i probably would have returned the a7 also. if you're looking for something a bit more polished, get ready to spend a bit more. samsung galaxy tab goes for about $600-$800 motorola xoom about the same price as well.

Did you check your sd card for bad sectors or tried a different sd card? Just curious.

Same problem adding Dexter Mod
I've just got the A7 and I'm following the threads about the Dexter Mod. I'm a little confused about 1- what to name the file...some say with a capital U and some not...2- with or without .zip...again same thing 3- can you use the 1.2 Mod after Elocity's latest firware update...the reason I ask this is because the link for 1.3 is down and I do have 1.2 on my pc for some reason.
On my sdcard it doesn't have a directory "ROOT" do i just copy it to the open card. So may questions...sorry about that, been at it for 3 hours and no success. Have to laugh tho....
BTW I have a file named LOST.DIR on the sdcard

file name
The file when you download it is already in zip form. All you need to do is rename it to ( update ).

Dexter Mod 1.3
Thank you. Just installed on 1 of my A7's but the 1.3 Mod...Was able to download it this morning, the site is back up again.
Now to do the bluetooth fix...life is all go...lol

Ok, lets clear this up once and for all...
For everyone that is getting confused about update.zip, Update.zip, Update.zip.zip, and whatever other additional permutations of combinations that people have been able to come up with.
The answer: although some people have reported success with a lower case "u", the best way is to simply follow the directions layed out for you and name it "Update.zip"
Here's the simple truth of the matter, the file you download is <Dexter's_webspace>/ElocityModv13.zip ... or if you are going after eLocity's updates it would be
<elocity's_webspace>/update.zip
Notice that both files have ".zip" at the end. No question about it, no chance that this is not true, no chance that as I actually saw someone post on here "elocity never named it .zip".
Now, here's where people have the opportunity to get confused and do something wrong...
PC Users:
A default out of the box Windows installation is set to HIDE file extensions of known file types (zip files included). So, when you look at your download it will appear to be just "ElocityModv13" or just "Update" even though the file extension (.zip) is actually there. So when you try to rename it to "Update.zip" you are changing only the information BEFORE the file extension, thereby making it "Update.zip.zip"... This is no one else's fault. Please don't blame eLocity, please don't blame Dexter, please don't blame the Android OS itself.
The Solution!:
Open Windows Explorer, go to the "Tools" drop down menu, go to "Folder Options", click on the "View" tab on the window that just popped up, uncheck the "Hide extensions for known file types" checkbox, click "OK", profit.
MAC Users:
I am guessing that this applies to most of the "What do I do with all these folders from the zip file" type of posts. The most probable issue here is that Mac's have a rather annoying habit of unzipping zip files as soon as it finishes downloading them, leaving you with just a folder (in this case either named "ElocityModv13" or "update" with no file extension (its a folder).
Mac Solution:
To keep Safari from automatically unzipping your files, the fix is easy.
Open Safari, open Safari's preferences, Click on the "General" tab, uncheck the "open safe files" box, close preferences. Now download either the mod or the stock update again, and you'll have the actual zip file instead of just a folder with the contents of the original file.
Hopefully this helps a lot of people figure this out.
Now...
My Disclaimer:
I already am prepared for the inevitable "stop being rude", "somebody call me a wahmublance", "I'm new to this" type of response that I seem to get more often then not on here. So, before any of that happens let me explain my standpoint.
Anyone trying to go down this route and put a custom rom on their device is attempting to modify it. This SHOULD require at very least a working knowledge of the device or software you are trying to modify. I am not saying everyone here should be on Dexter's level, but at least a little computer know how would be very beneficial. Next, before just diving in to changing things on this little chunk of technology that you just spent a few hundred on, read. Simple as that, educate yourself on the toy you just bough. Creating many many duplicates of threads asking the same extremely basic questions does not help anyone. It clutters up the forums, makes the people that actually have the answers so sick of saying the same thing over and over that they just don't answer any more, makes it harder to navigate the actual different topics, and makes it harder for everyone else to find the answers they are looking for. There should be no "which one of the 15 bluetooth not working threads was that post in?"
I apologize for my complete lack of patience with people that can not search for information and need to be spoon fed. But 99% of the time the question has already been asked and answered. And lets be serious here, the A7 forum only has FOUR SECTIONS, really not a lot of reading. And in the other cases where it is a user error like not knowing how to rename a file or yesterday's hilarious "My SD card doesn't have a folder called ROOT", you really need to ask yourself if this is really something you are up to. If you lack the basic knowledge to perform the easy steps of the process, is it really worth it to risk creating a $300 paperweight to say "look at the cool thing I did" to your friends?
If something I said here seems like it was taken from your post/story, don't take it personal, it was only listed as an example.

I'm sorry I opened such a can of worms on this subject for some "TECHNOLOGICALLY-ADVANCED" individuals who seem to have nothing better to do but respond with condescending remarks on this forum. FYI: I recently purchased a new Samsung Galaxy tablet on eBay for $360.00, hence my A7 has been shipped back to the retailer for a refund. I still think the A7 is a great device, I simply do not have the time to repeatedly attempt to update it so I can have access to the Android Marketplace, nor the patience to tolerate the attitude of certain posters to this forum. I thought the purpose for this forum was to help each other out on issues, not to repeatedly "Beat Dead Horses" which some individuals tend to be doing. Thanks again everyone and GOOD LUCK!

You didn't open a can of worms, it was just a coincidence that the misinforming post that sent the fingers of fury flying happened to be on your thread. and trust me, I have plenty of better things to do, this is just filler.
Seems like you got a hell of a good deal on the G Tab, Congrats.
And yes, the point of a forum is to help other people, which I do. By correcting bad advice, and trying to get people to ask for and give help in a more collaborative way instead of the same questions being asked over and over again. I'm sorry if you find my presence on the internet grating, just be glad that you haven't had to endure my vocabulary in person (apparently it is pretty similar to that of a drunken sailor with tourette's syndrome with the same measure of sarcasm that I treat the net to)
Back at you on the good luck. Expecting a review on the g tab, pro's and con's vs the A7 hopefully

LOL
LOL, you guys are just hilarious

[Q] New User...couple of questions

Hello,
Just got my Elocity A7 and so far my feelings on it are mixed. When it does what I want it to, I love it! But I am having a couple of issues....
1. How do I copy files from the sd card to the internal memory? I am trying to get the Nook app to recognize some epubs I have loaded on to the sd card. It does not see them at all. I was thinking the solution would be to get the files copied to the nook\mydocuments folder the app created in the internal memory but I cant figure out how to move the files. I tried connecting the A7 to my PC but when I do the PC does not recognize it at all. I tried running terminal, thinking I could just move the files that way, but when it opens, how to you type? Do you need an external keyboard?
2. Every USB storage device I have connected to the A7 just says "checking for errors" and that never seems to go away so it doesnt seem to be mounting the USB devices correctly.
3. Is it normal for this device to have a very limited wifi range? I have several other wifi devices, including the original nook, a media player and a laptop all of which work fine throughout my home but the A7 does not. However, I applied dexter's mod and then did the new official update and that seems to be a bit better now.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated! I have about 12 days left before I can no longer return it so I really want to make sure I can get these issues resolved before then since after its going to be a lot hard to return if I want.
Thank you!
Chris
Re. 1 - I don't have an A7, but it should have a file explorer apparently, and you should be able to use that to copy. For term, try pressing the menu button, or longpress to see if a keyboard or input method menu appears.
Jim
****** All below is from my experience using Dexter's Mod 1.1 ******
1) OI File Manager should be in your list of available mods. Open it, click on the SD card icon at the top. You are not at the sd card level yet, but the A7s symbolic sd card. Go down and find sdcard-disk0 as this is your actual SD card, click on it to open the sd card. Continue to find the desired file. Long hold on the file and a menu appears select copy. Now transverse your way to the desired spot to drop the file (Not in the folder, but to where you can see the folder -- you may not have write permisions to drop a file in some folders -- using a program such as Root Explorer will let you see if you have the right permissions). Long hold on the destination folder, and a menu will appear again. Select copy. Reasons this may not work...permissions and ownership. Linux/unix is particluar about these things.
2) More than likely your USB device is not formatted FAT/FAT32 must be to be able to utilize that type of device.
3) My range isn't extremely strong, but it is not bad. I use it in sever environments from sitting on top of the access point to being down a hall in a brick building with several walls between the A7 and the AP (lots of other devices) and it seems to work. My co-worker has an iPad and it is as strong as the iPad.
Hope that helps!
Dale
EDIT: Thought maybe I should add the following. I have tried several Droid Tablets/Pads and sent them back. Without Dexters mod, this one is not bad. With Dexter's mod it is near perfect (multi-touch would be nice). I am planning to develop software on it and use it as a organizational tool. I have DesktopToGo for editing office products and that works really good. PDF's rock. Music is pretty good (although my Archos 705 has my entire music collection on it with room for a lot more and several movies). I am using compiled help files (have extensive collection of ebooks in PDF format and CHM format) and those are awesome. I can tether this with my Droid phone and it in effect has 3G with no additional expense. I can VNC into my home computers and work computers and have full SSH access to all my servers. Several interesting games are awesome and I can keep up on Facebook and Twitter including playing a couple FaceBook games (and search for my previous posts and you can find out how to update Facebook). The face to face video/front facing video is not a huge item I would use, but it would definitely be adequate. Volume from the speakers is low, but works. Battery life is fine. I guess I am not sure what more I could want to do with it that I haven't been able to figure out. So for me, and mostly because of Dexter's MOD, IT IS A KEEPER!
I am about to try Dexter's mod at version 1.2 when I get home from work tonight.
So far I was on the fence about this device. I think for me I really wanted 3.0 on it and I did not have the patience to wait until 3.0 was released and there was some time for tablet makers to catch up. So in part my dilemna with this device is my own fault for being impatient. That being said I think there was some mis-information out there in regards to the touch screen which is one of the reasons I bought this device for future upgrade.
Now I see for $100 more I can have all I wanted in the newer device about to be on pre-order feb 15th. Of course $300 was a stretch for me so $400 is out of the question. I thought of returning this and getting a nook but the Tegra is so snappy and I just do not know if the Nook will be as responsive as the Elocity is but at least I know someone has already put 3.0 on that device.
My thinking is that there are so many talented and genius type developers who love to tinker and Dexter is one of those who I am so impressed and grateful to that at some point they will figure a way to get 3.0 on here some how!!
However, as you stated so well in your post as it is right now this device really is very nice. It does a heck of a lot and does it pretty well.
I have been thinking despite its shortcomings and unless you spend a lot of cash most of these devices have some shortcomings that I will say almost it is a keeper!! She is so close!!
I am hopeful that when I get Dexters Mod I will be equally happy and it may just lean the tipping machine in favor of the Elocity.
Rob
If you want Honeycomb for $300 or less, I don't really see any other options than the Nook Color.

gapps + market for stock firmware..YEAH

Hi, thank you very much bestialbud , for your contribution now enjoy factory firmware and all functions work perfectly in A7. and also I have the Market.
thanks for the positive confirmation.
i'll try and throw out some more stuff for you the a7 users this weekend to accompany the gapps fix; some build prop improvements to get you access to more apps.
i'll try and throw out some more stuff for the rom chefs to kick up the activity in rom and mod development for the a7; map out all the files, permissions and uid/gid's, and then MAYBE if i have the time this weekend go experimental and package the factory rom into what i consider a normal update zip; zipped up rom instead of a system image w/ a script that sets all the roms permissions, symbolic links and busybox install. once its in a more manageable format like that you'll get more would be chef's and themer's contributing.
been thinkin' about it all week, i just don't have a tablet of my own (i'm the misses android fixit tech), so my works restricted to weekend mornings.
would be great, that within your improvements we have an ad-hoc connection to work properly.
the market does not have all the permissions, but wiht the permissions you indicate the fix the problem.
I'm anxious to see your improvements. Thanks again.
i'm sorry my english.
genialor; yeah, i never had any success w the adhoc wifi fixes myself. adhoc limitations are pretty common for mobile devices, not just android. i actually picked up a dsl connection due to this limitation, quite reluctantly i might add.
there is some 25 other similar tegra tablets. a portable solution could still present itself. i wouldnt count on any manufacturer adding adhoc connectity if they didnt provide it in the initial release.
i can say the usual passion finger, or release keys added to the stock one didnt make any difference. but im only using skyfire for an app name to search.
if folks could list other apps they dont see, it may help to make some gradual steps.
otherwise as far as savey folks looking at direct manipulation; the fingerprint that the market app reads after being copied from build prop is stored in /data/data/com.android.vending along w the characteristics your device supports. im a compare the tabs to my phone for fun to see if i can manipulate the data, because fingerprint replacement, w this gapps package in the rom isnt working. if that works, i can post instructions for the savvy, and MAYBE dig up some way to creatively automate adding those details.

Hey, Tested your update and it seems to work fine except for some game apps. These aren't crucial but may indicate some permission issues: "crazy snowboards" seems to have a orientation problem.( only work in portrait mode.) "mau mau"intermittent FC.
*** note these apps worked in Dexter's latest mode ***
Otherwise Good Job!!
I find the installation notes for gapps mod in original thread extremely confusing.
I just installed official firmware (BTW the installation notes on official site were crystal clear). What should I do now?
A video of the entire process would be great.
P.S: NP, I just did not understand that to navigate between recovery menu items I must use "back" button.
Looks like gapps works now
sorry, i didnt provide step by step details for recovery use. i wont update that information either, as recovery is likely to change soon w lightly different instructions..

Some market applications can't see sdcard...
Looks like it is mounted as /storage/sdcard-disk0 while these apps expect it to be at /sdcard. Also /sdcard is mounted somewhere on internal memory, same place as /storage actually . Is there any way to change it?

I did search and could not find any comprehensible information.
I didn't say it would be comprehensible.
The external sd card is mounted as /storage/sdcard-disk0. The A7 can read from it but not write apps to it, or at least the market doesn't and I don't think you can run apps from it, just install from it. There is an internal sd card 4GB total, but with 1+GB available for apps, and we can also add our own sd card (up to 32GB) stuffed with our music, videos, jpgs, documents, etc....that way we can access them through gallery and media players, etc, without having to download a bunch of junk onto our internal memory.
1GB is a huge amount of internal space for the kind of apps that I suspect most of us are using. Sorry if I'm not clear, but in truth this topic has been done to death.
Maybe our intrepid developers can find a way to rewrite the way this thing works now that they have the kernel source but maybe not.
there are ways and roms that may change the sdcard mount location. the apps may com thru the google market, but their ability to run is another function of the rom.
this is only a google apps addon.
you'll have to wait a lil bit longer til you see a rom from me. i'm interested in recovery and themeing for this device right now..

This is an on going problem with the sd card and the way its mounted by elocity's implementation of Android 2.2. To male a long story short, Elocity's android version is 2.2 compatible not a true implementation of Android 2.2. As far as I know no one has been able to work around this problem. Dexter tried starting with mod 1.3 but people started having problems with sd and usb detection. I'm waiting for Stream Tv to finally decide to fix this problem.

Drugs are bad mm'kay
Why on earth do people feel the need to disseminate misinformation on here on such a regular basis.
Go back and re-read Dexter's posts on the subject. There is a reason, a real reason, not made up like "its not true android 2.2". This is not a phone, it has larger internal storage and thus relies less on the external media. To have it the way you people want it (like a monstrous phone) the external storage would end up being the default, making it difficult to use the internal storage, and also REQUIRING that you have a decent size microSD just to make the tablet usable.
BTW, I am still laughing that I am apparently using an Android knock off lolololol

I don't understand your response. I read Dexter's post on the subject. You need to re-read it. OS's in general have standards. If I run a windows, linux or mac system to name a few, you expect your hardware and software to run a certain way. For example, when you to read, write or print a file, any software you run for that OS should allow you to this on any computer that you run that particular OS on the same way. This isn't rocket science for a typical consumer. If you want to prove to me that I don't know what I'm talking about or worse yet that I

. That's irrelevant. The standard is not about what you want but the way it was decided that the OS should work plus I believe this is or will be addressed in Android 3.0. This constitutes and opinion rather than a fact. I didn't spend $299 on your opinion which BTW I don't agree with.
I understand XDA is developers site and you guys are use to thinking outside the box, which is fine by me, but we aren't all here for the same reasons and when I purchase something and it says I'm getting a certain thing, as a consumer, I expect the minimum of what if I'm purchasing. The box days "Android 2.2" not "Android 2.2 compatible" or "Android 2.2 features" or "Android 2.2 clone."
The question is:
- What is "Android 2.2"
- How does this relate to software and hardware issues with the A7?
- Is there a work around?
- Is there a firmware update?
and If your replying to a post, do can you contribute anything helpeful because telling me to search all of Dexter's post because you think you say a post concerning this already without reference that to that post is a waste of everyone time.

If you want to prove to me that I don't know what I'm talking about or worse yet that I . , please show specifically where what I said concerning Android 2.2 is wrong other then that you may have read dexter's post. . this is all a misunderstanding of how tablets are supposed to work, and caused by the fact that android 2.2 is made for a phone with external memory cards, and less to nothing of internal memory.
the current installation where apps are "moved" to internal storage is actually how vendors are trying to implement 2 types of storage.
comparing this to a mobile with just sdcard, and android 2.2 only supporting one storage type, the preferred storage becomes the "internal" and sdcard handling as you notice is now pointing to a location with the internal storage location.
the mountpoint at the internal storage location is planned based on the fact that users coming from an android based mobile knows alot about where to find data, which is in the storage location, so its put as mount at the storage so its easy to access, and not actually any bug at all.
so until better handling is presented (hopefully 3.0) people will continue to think that the handling is wrong or something is not wright here, but it is correct.
your internal storage of "just" 1.5GB is the preferred location, as tablets are not meant to have sdcards as preferred storage, if you chose not to put a sdcard into the tablet. so the choice was easy, use internal storage for android so ppl didnt need to buy additional cards.
but the lack of storage internally is a vendor decision, not a bug or not "the android way" a problem in any way..
imagine, those users without any sdcard, being unable to use the feature of android to a storage, and needed to use data storage for all files, that would look strange, if you didnt have the option available..
it could have been planned differently but vendors (all of the tegra2 vendors) has chosen this path, which could have been done differently but its all relate to apps and how they expect your device to work..
a long explanation, but remember 2.2 is not made for tablets, it made for small devices with external memory cards, which is long overdue and is followed up with the new android 3.0 which hopefully solves your problem.
conclusion,
Nvidia could have chosen a different way of using android, but they're still rather new to the platform and their design is not without problems yet (honeycomb will show that too), so if they used real planning and organized memory and sdcard handling like 2.2 was made for, you would have no problems at all. Remember Nvidia designed it this way, and they are the reason you have problems..Lack of knowledge of design and functionality, like BMW trying to make graphics card for a pc, coming from designing cars, their work would not be in a class like nvidia graphics, but probably ok..but far from good..

There was no button to make the important text blink and slap you in the face at the same time, so I hope bold and red will suffice.
Don't get pissy with me because you are putting out misinformation and got called on it. There are people who come on here to learn and someone might have actually believed your BS about "Android 2.2 compatible" or "Android 2.2 features" or "Android 2.2 clone."
I have contributed. You on the other hand have not. Spreading crap like this is merely tantamount to telling people the sky is purple.
Edit: by the way, the "on a regular basis" part was not directed at you or any other individual person. I was pointing out how often this happens, not keeping score of who has done it the most.
Another Edit: Of course it will be addressed in Android 3.0 ... 3.0 IS FOR TABLETS!
Yet Another Edit: No, you are right, you didn't spend $299 on my opinion. You spent $299 on a bottom of the line Android 2.2 tablet hoping for the best, just like the rest of us... And since you seem so hung up on what the box said, did your box say "Powered by Android 2.2" or did it say "Powered by some guy named Rob's opinion"? I am willing to bet it said the first. However if you decide that you are willing to pay for my "opinion", there happens to be a donate button right under my name on the left. Thanks for playing.
so, yeah. mount locations a rom issue.
'piss' somewhere else?

Okay--this might be a stupid question, but am I supposed to install this and Dexter's mod over the firmware?
If so, should I do them in a particular order?
Thanks for all that you guys do!

[Q] Newbie needing advice please

Wow, talk about confusing, the A7 is a whole new world to me.
I've had computers for years, currently I have two running XP & 7, plus I have two laptops running XP & 7. I understand a lot when it comes to computers, but the A7 is so different.
I've downloaded & printed the User Manual and I have read it several times. I've read numerous posts on this forum and now I'm confused. I feel so dumb. Too many words that I don't understand. I want to learn everything I can about running every aspect of this tablet, but it's like just as I learn one thing, the next time it doesn't work that way.
I need more reading material. Whether it be links to posts, books to read, anything to help me understand what I am doing. I make notes of things I have read so that I will remember what to do next time. Post something to help me, PM me or even email me.
I will be so greatfull for any help given.
Thank you
The user manual you can download on elocity's site is useless because there is a lot of things that were never edited out to match the actual release version of the tablet.
As far as computer knowledge and relating it to the a7 or android in general, windows knowledge will not get you very far. A good working knowledge of Unix/Linux will give you a much better idea of what's going on behind the scenes since android is based on Linux (loosely, in my opinion) but still functions very similarly.
If you have any programming or web design experience, I would recommend downloading the android sdk and do some playing around with simple programs. Also with the sdk you can make a virtual android device to monkey around with without fear of messing up your new $300 toy I use eclipse as my development environment in Linux, not sure what a good windows alternative would be, but the structure of an android app is pretty easy to follow. There are example programs and source available on the android developer site developer.android.com if I remember correctly (same place to get the sdk). And the language itself tends to be pretty similar to writing a Java app.
I've probably missed the mark completely on the information you were trying to find, but if you are anything like me, you'll find hours (years if it gets you going down the Linux/Unix path lol) of obsession with just this info.
Hopefully it gets you on the opensource band wagon (the reason I love Linux/Android)
Wow...where to start? Well, you got that you turn it on and slide the lock to the dot to unlock. Then you are in a "home page". There are 5 of them. there are dots at the top of the screen showing which home page ur on. Usually the center one. Touch the screen and slide one way or the other to move the home pages.
If you touch the square whitish pad at the right of the screen with a bunch of darker squares in it, it takes you to your apps - the programs that do what you want.
If you touch an app it runs. Touch the return arrow just to the right of the screen to close the app and go back. It always takes u back.
You have to "root" the machine to get the good apps. Usually with Dexters mod. This is easy. You download the file, rename it to upgrade.zip, place it on a micro SD card, and go to settings/About Device/System Updates/ then touch update device.
The home button at the right side of the screen always takes you to the center home page. - It DOES NOT close the app you have open at the moment.
you should get an app closer to close all of the un-closed apps for you.
Oh yea, android market place is the app you want to add all of the apps you want.
You get it with Dexters Mod (4.1 right now)
and there is tons more...............
Based on Linux ... now I understand why this is confusing to me. I've never worked with it before, but I understand from fellow users, they like it better than Windows OS.
I've never done any programming or web design, but maybe it's not too late to learn something new.
I thank both of you for your info and appreciate everything you have said.
mrpete2u I really appreciated the details of your instructions. I know I'm a dummy at this, and I'm sure there are more of you guys out there to help.
Thanks

Another newbie jumping in....and trying to figure this out. To "root" the machine do I need to update the firmware from the elocity site or can I jump to Dexters right away. If so, where do I find that?
Thanks for your advice.
your a7 is rooted already with dexters mod or elocity firmware.
My Kernel version is 2.6.32.9-svn2514

And Build # PBJ8000.2.0124
And ECv is 0.14
Would you mind explaining what these numbers mean, please?
Thank you

look here for Dexter mod forget about the stock rom ....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=890042
I have now updated to 2.0.0133
Now I need to figure out how to get the market icon so I can start looking for more apps & games. Tried downloading earlier and it keeps telling me that I have downloaded to my phone? I don't have a fancy phone to download to.
Here I am again confused, but what's new about that!!
There is a thread in the device section on adding market to stock rom.
Or you could just run elocitymod by Dexter.
I did run the elocity mod 1.41 and my firmware was updated to 2.0.0133
When I am on market.android's site, they want my phone number so they can download the app to my phone.
I'm trying to download the app to my tablet.
Am I confused or what
Thanks for answering me.

Yes, yes you are lol
For all intents and purposes (as far as Google is concerned at least) your tablet is a phone.
Install market enabler on the a7 and fake a cell provider. The a7 should show up on the Google market website after that.
You didn't install dextermod and then apply eLocity update over it did you? Just want to be sure.
Your laughing at me .... that's ok ... right now I'm so new at this, I really don't care, in fact I am laughing at myself for being so dumb.
I went to dexter's site and downloaded a file called elocitymod1.41 and renamed it to update.zip and that is what I installed.
OK I will install market enabler
Thank you again for helping this dummy .... LOL
From the perceived tone of the post prior to my last one, I thought you were already at the laughing stage. I thought I was just laughing along, sorry for the mix up.
Sounds like you are doing everything right. I just wanted to make sure that we were dealing with a clean install of elocitymod, and not something mixed together by trying to ally another update on top of it.
Needless to say ... I am still confused.
Installed the market enabler, but I am not getting anywhere.
Why I try to install an app I get a message telling me there is no phone attached to this account and they want me to log in with another account. When I try creating a new account, there is no place to give a phone number and I get all those stupid messages again.
Just wondering if I am too dumb, because you all make this seem so easy, that maybe I should give up and figure out other ways to get apps and leave the android market site alone???
Sorry if I have frustration in my voice, but I guess I thought this would be easier.

Why not just use market from the tablet? I wouldn't stress so much about trying to get it to work and remotely install from the web site.
Each time I go to the site, I am on my tablet. Mainly because it has a direct install button and not a download, so I want to be on the tablet to install on it.

So are you hitting the Market icon (opening the Market app) or are you trying to open http://market.android.com/ in the web browser?

IT WORKED! I (with help from Moscow) UNBRICKED MY A500!

MOSCOW DESIRE IS THE HERO OF ALL MANKIND!
Or at least my hero for helping me to salvage my bricked A500. Here's my story and the fix he gave me. I am a total NOOBIE, so I'll give it to you in noobie terms.
Background
Wanted to try a tablet for the first time and not invest a lot of money in case I hated it. So, I went to Craigslist and bought a used Acer Icononia A500 for $100 U.S. It worked great for about 90 days and I fell in love with it. Then, one day.... ACER LOGO only! It would only boot to the Acer Logo.
I tried to hard reset pin hole, I tried the Power Volume+ slide the orientation switch to reset - and I got NOTHING!
So, I went on Google - asked the question and ended up on this forum. (Which is probably HOW you ended up here also!)
Getting some help
When I first started reading about the fixes - I got all kinds of techno-babble. Words like "ECCUID" and others that I had no clue what they were talking about. So, I was totally confused and just asked in desperation "Can't I just pay someone to fix this thing?" That's when Moscow Desire came to my rescue.
He basically told me to "chill out" (very politely) and talked be through the two major possibilities - which I am describing in NOOBIE language with no promises that this really what he said - but it sounded like : A) Software glitch, causing motherboard to not fully launch the operating software or B) motherboard hard failure.
In the event, it was just software - he gave me the following "fix" to try. SO HERE IT IS!
The Fix!!
Here is what Moscow told me to ....
"For starters, lets do some simple stuff first. Following is a link to some ICS update files. There are 4 of them. I have already de-crypted them. Now, download each to a individual folder on your PC. You will see they are numbered. This is to keep them separate so you know which is which.
Now, choose one of them (really doesn't matter which one, but maybe start with the highest number first). Rename it to "update.zip" (make sure it is not "update.zip.zip" as this is a common mistake. If your PC doesn't show the .zip extension, just rename it to update)
Now, copy it to your external SD card. Power on your tablet holding Vol+ (or minus) and PWR. Continue pressing until you see text about installing the update in the upper left corner, then release. We'll see if it installs all the way. If after 15 minutes it doesn't (it may stop at about 25%), then PWR off, and rename and copy the next update file, and try that one. Might have to try all 4, so make sure your tab is fully charged.
If none of these install all the way, then life becomes a little more difficult......
Links to my server (large files 300+mb) (Note: these were live links - but because I don't have enough posts to post links, I replaced the "http" with SWV. You'll need to replace the SWV with http)
http://d-h.st/Zf8
http://d-h.st/2cm
http://d-h.st/gw8
http://d-h.st/KXI
Try that."
BUT WAIT - LET ME FILL YOU IN ON WHAT I DID - THAT MADE IT WORK FOR ME!
Do it this way!
1. When you go to the download sites - watch out - there are some "paid" spam downloaders there that want you to install a bunch of crap! Look for the plain, gray colored, download button. Don't click on any of the green or colored ones or you are screwed!
2. Once you do the downloads - you can expect to probably have to try each one - I did and it was the third one down (in the Windows File Explorer naming sequence). I can't tell you the name of which one, because I had to rename them as directed. I should have made a screen shot, but I didn't think of it.
3. RENAME THEM ON YOUR COMPUTER FIRST. This is what caused me so much initial trouble as I couldn't get the files to copy over to the SD card correctly. Now, you'll have to rename one, and if it doesn't work in a few moments, you'll have to rename it back to something else, and then try another one.
4. Format your SD card each time. I didn't want to risk having some residual files on my SD card - so I re-formatted it "quick format" each time BEFORE I copied the file over.
5. Copy the renamed file to your SD card and insert it in the A500 SD card slot.
6. Hold down the power button and the volume rocker (left or right side) - until you see wording start to appear on the top left side of the screen. Let go then and watch and see what happens.
7. The words told me it was erasing all data. Then it told me it was going to load the recovery icon.
8. It then loaded the green android robot! Note: Twice before it got to the robot and then the robot was on its side, layng down with an "i" icon on its belly. In other words, that recovery did NOT work. So, I started the process all over.
9. When it works - you will know it! The robot stays up and you can see a progress bar going across the bottom! Mine did not hang up, once it started to reload. Moscow did say it COULD hang up. So, read his instructions above.
AND THAT IS IT!
My tablet appears to be working fine now - I'll go start playing with it and downloading apps - but I think I am there!
Also, I am going to donate to Moscow Desire - because I would have PAID for this fix. You should do the same if it fixes yours.
My name is Steve Vance and I am thrilled to have been able to do this WITHOUT a ton of knowledge. The toughest thing you'll have to do is the "renaming" thing.
I hope it fixes your bricked A500 the way it fixed mine.

You are most certainly welcome and big Thanks! Am glad it worked. Sometimes the easy way works, before pulling out the "big guns"
Now, last but not least. Get your CUID number and write it down in a safe place. You can find procedures (pretty simple) in the "Sticky Thread" in the Dev section near the top. You might need it one day.....

Thank you thank you thank you Moscow. I can not believe this but my tablet works. I gave up a couple months ago after trying everything under the sun (obviously not quite). But every direction I read meant I needed working drivers and I tried everything and so many different computers trying to get a driver to work. I gave up before I snapped it in half from pure frustration. That was a few months ago. Today I read this post and I also thank the original poster for posting these easy directions. Everyone who is struggling with the same thing I was needs to try this first, not last.
I am quite skint at the moment but when my cheque comes I will try to set aside a bit for you. I was willing to pay someone too, but no one could fix it, so I didn't have to pay anything. Thank you so very much.

GOOD LUCK ALL AND THANKS MOSCOW DESIRE!

recovery verified failed no cpuid, 4 zip not work

You are most certainly welcome and big Thanks! Am glad it worked. Sometimes the easy way works, before pulling out the "big guns"
Now, last but not least. Get your CUID number and write it down in a safe place. You can find procedures (pretty simple) in the "Sticky Thread" in the Dev section near the top. You might need it one day.....

Moscow. I have been reading so many threads and trying things out im going cu-cu.. but I tried the four zip files with no luck, and I have no cpuid. Just bought tablet yesterday for my boy, he was so happy. Just closed the internet by hitting home key, and bammm, just froze up. Waited and no responce so powered it off than on . Now just ACER LOGO, and a few times it went to the ANDROID LOGO. I know the a500 was rooted because of an app that checks it that I opened, and it said "rooted". Besides that I dont know anything else. But I tried the volume and power, seems like theres no recovery on this thing. Jus says, " Booting recovery kernal image. In red it says, Recovery verified failed. The magic words we all are familar with. without the cpuid and not being able to work with any of the 4 zip files, am I in the creek without a paddle. Can you resurrect this with a magic trick you have up your sleeve. If anyone can, I thought it would be you, rather pay someone on here than ACER.
Once more a bump of thanks
Well, it's been four years and my ACER 500 bit the dust again. So I dug through this old thread and found my original notes. Printed them off and re-staged my ACER 500 and it is up and running once more.
Again - another thank you to Moscow Desire

Rooting and Fixing Samsung Galaxy Tab E (SM-T560NU) (and fixing -504 issue)

Disclaimer: I know this should go in the correct subforum for my device, but I'm having trouble navigating this site, altogether. I only see subforums for a handful of devices. So if there is a better place for this thread, I apologize
Oh, where to begin. My wonderful girlfriend got me this tablet back in october, since i said it'd be nice to have a linux based tablet so i wouldn't have apple telling me what i can and cannot do with my device (she saw that as a hint, even though it was more social commentary, but I'll take it). Anyway, I found the 16GB limitation problematic, so I decided to root it so i could use some sort of sshfs app to create a slow multi-terabyte harddrive space to steam small files (like music) from. Seeing as i had the thing for only a week and it's kind of expensive, even for a nurse, to buy for me, i chickened out and made due with a small 8GB microSD card which i just happened to have laying around.
Fast forward to a few days ago, I ordered from Amazon a 128GB microSD card (also from samsung), and decided to try to make due with that. Only to find out (and, if you're able to help me you've probably met the following issues yourselves) that the seemingly largest apps refuse to let you move them to external storage. Even better, there's some apps like Star Wars KOTOR (2.5GB) that say they let you move them, but in reality they stay on internal storage and create empty folders on the external medium. And then many apps cannot write and read to and from SD cards (like DOSbox Turbo), for reasons that completely stump me (which leads to me having to move dos games back and forth when i want to play one that saves). I then read about this wonderful feature called "Adoptable Storage," and promptly go through all sorts of things to try to enable it, only to find out that, since I have Android Version 6.0.1 from Samsung, that feature was disabled by them. After using the email support to berate them (they don't have a suggestion box), decided to try to come here and figure out how to properly root this device and figure out how to solve my space issue (I have 128GB of space that I need to use, but have no idea how to use it for what i need to use it for). By the way, a small shoutout to Samsung support, despite my very terse response, there clearly was a human being at the other end and this human was very, very civil and said that they'll pass it on as feedback (I got the impression that the employee either had the same issue or at least wanted me to know that there have been alot of complaints about this issue).
Anyway, now that that wall of text is over, this is how far i've gotten.
I know that XDA is reliable, they've had problems in the past with malware, but it was unintentional and the ship has been cleaned. I don't know about anywhere else, so the rooting instructions i find elsewhere i assume are probably correct, but i don't know where to get files for the process that i can trust, outside of XDA (and i'm having trouble finding the files i need, here).
I have a nice little article from techbeasts.com ( techbeasts.com/install-twrp-and-root-samsung-galaxy-tab-e/ ), but I don't know where their downloads came from and how many people checked them out for windows and android trojans and such.
So...
1. Is that article accurate for android 6.0.1?
2. Are those files safe (free from corruption and viruses)?
3. If they're not safe, where can I get safe files?
4. I like to develop programs, and I want to be able to develop apps for android as well. Once rooted, how does one test how their app would work on an unrooted device to ensure the app follows the "proper procedures?"
5. How do I deal with apps that are root sensitive? The point of all this is so that I can keep using my apps, so if they all break because i'm rooted that defeats the purpose.
6. Other than having to be careful with what i do (I've used Linux for years, and I occasionally like to code in assembly), that it voids my warranty, and that screwing up can make for a really bad day, is there anything else that I should know? This is, indeed, my first touch screen device outside of Nintendo products, because my V3xi is fine for me as a phone.
EDIT:
7. Forgot the most important question: How would I go about getting adoptable storage working on this device once it is rooted?
Forward: Given the nature of my question, the URL is absolutely necessary. After I've gotten my "10 useful posts" I'll fix the URL for future viewers.
EDIT2: Decided to take a chance. Ran into some issues finding the "stock firmware" which I ended up having to do. For those that have problem getting TWRP to stick, you gotta flash the stock firmware of the version you have currently installed. I tried to flash the original that it came with, which, for some reason, it didn't like at all.
Oh, and don't turn off OEM mode after everything's done. I assumed that after everything was installed it wouldn't second guess it and i could safely turn it off for added security if any app went rogue or something. Nope, must keep it on, so do regular backups. Turn off auto-updating, etc. I hear there's some sort of app that lets you "update safely." Not sure what it is, but unless you *NEED* it, don't do it.
And as a bonus note (so it shows up in the archives), some apps didn't install right (either google or the app developer's fault, but these apps weren't tied to this process [pokemon go and just about all the final fantasy games]). The kicker about this is is that you will not notice this UNTIL you uninstall the app, and reinstall it. Deleting the data before uninstalling the app will make it unstable. To find the data, i used
Code:
du / | grep "pokemon" > pokesearch.log
, since i knew that there should not have been a pokemon related directory on my droid at the time, since i needed to reinstall pokemon go because it was acting really fruity. Deleting the folders (actually, the last entry contains the rest, so it's easier just to delete the last one) allowed me to avoid the -504 issue (not to be confused with 504).
Code:
[email protected]:/data/data/com.termux/files/home # cat pokesearch.log

We can talk here for the benefit of the community. Any problems you might have should be documented for the sake of the community. But, yes, the -504 error i mentioned above can only be solved through root, so, yes, i was successful.

Tablet just updated itself after I tried to root it .. MM 7.0.1 but I didnt ask it to
I disabled automatic updates (from settings and google play, 'cause it's in both places) to prevent this problem. There might be a new firmware for the tablet, but i'm sticking to this version. I'm not sure you can downgrade after you upgrade, though. You can take a shot, though, if you're not afraid of loosing data. I doubt this process will brick as long as you can get the official firm ware on backup incase something goes wrong.
