OTA updates if not on T-Mobile? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm using a T-Moblie MyTouch 4G on Wind Mobile in Canada. Would the phone get OTA updates? If not, is there any way to check or download the latest updates. Have there been any updates since the version on my phone:
Android: 2.2.1
Baseband: 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M
Kernel:
2.6.32.21-g899d047

Browser: WebKit 3.1
The reason I ask is the phone behaves strangely at times. I've seen it show 3 or 4 bars but GPS, data and voice don't work until I reboot then all is fine. I've also seen it lose a strong signal and be unable to get it back until I reboot and suddenly everything is fine. I've also read so much about how fast this phone is supposed to be but mine seems to to frequently stutter when scrolling through the app list, movie playback in rockplayer (and others) is often jerky, and it even seems to have serious problems recording at 720p (it freezes for a while resulting in sections being missing from the recording) or playing back those videos. I'm hoping maybe there was a bug fix released.
Thanks!

stock Rom is pretty bloated and your going to run into those issues if your on stock. swap to a custom rom and root and you should be fine.

So none of that sounds out of the ordinary on the stock ROM?
I'm trying to get my phone replace with one of the ones with a good screen. I'm waiting to hear from the third HTC rep who's supposed to call today but it sounds like they are going to give me a replacement since they told me they're trying to collect samples of the poor screens (although based on the poll I saw in this forum, it's hard to imagine there's a shortage of samples for them to look at). I don't want to do any permanent rooting or flashing until I have a replacement just in case it causes issues with warranty.
Once I have a good replacement I'll probably go ahead and flash something better. Is there a stable Gingerbread ROM yet?
Thanks.

Thats strange. I'm completely stock and don't have the problems you're having. I think you just got an overall bad device. Hope you get a good replacement. What speeds are you getting?
As for the ota? I don't think you'll receive it due to T-Mobile being the one that pushes it. When an ota does come I'm pretty sure there'll be a manual way to update. Latest update is still 2.2.1 which is the one currently on your phone.
CyanogenMod 7 is still experimental but I hear all over that its pretty stable. Check some threads first.

I've had zero issues on stock and still haven't bothered to flash anything yet, despite being rooted, because the stock works so well for me. I also think you just got a generally bad device. Best of luck with your next one!

[25.01.2011] There is no any official update after this version...

Ok, thanks guys. I'll see how my new phone works when I get a replacement. Hopefully it'll behave better...

I'm stock and I don't have those problems that you mentioned. Have you tried factory reset?

No, I haven't tried a factory reset yet. It's been a little better behaved lately. Also I'm most likely getting a replacement from HTC in the coming days(weeks?) so I'm not inclined to do any modding or starting again from a reset until I get the new phone. Whether it's a hardware or software issue, hopefully starting fresh on a new device will fix it...

Im in a similar situation (in Canada as well) and waiting to hear back from htc regarding getting a replacement (taking them quite a bit of time to respond) - let us know how your warranty claim goes!

Did you ever get your replacement? I got an escalation call the day after my initial call so I was feeling really good about HTC support. He told me I'd get a call from corporate. Still haven't heard anything. Finally called HTC support back, their notes were all messed up, and after several minutes on hold they told me Corporate will call me.... And now after that last post I want to install Cyanogen 7 but I don't want to do it before sending back my phone...
In any case, I put up a video shot at 720p to illustrate one of the things I was talking about. Actually, in low light video looks awful, but there was enough light to make this one look decent at times, but every so often it just pauses. This happen to anyone else? Is it a slow SD card write issue maybe? I'm using the card that came with the phone.

Did you get around to the factory reset?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App

HTC, after a month of d*cking me around, finally told me the "bad" screen are within spec and I don't have a valid warranty anyway, so would I kindly go fornicate with myself...
I guess I'll try a factory reset and flashing now...

Can't stand all the problems on the N1!

I am about to sell my nexus one and get a g1 again or a cliq, I can't stand my phone losing service so much, not sending text messages, and having to turn on and off just to get my service to work again, I thought this was a "super phone"!?!?
anyone else tired of the N1?
No. I don't have those problems. Maybe you can call tmobile about it and have them do a service test in your area.
are you rooted by any chance? If so, why not flash a new radio?

It is the best phone available right now and most probably, will be for the next 6 months.... the problems u described is service related, so say "I'm going to switch my service provider" instead of "I'm going to switch my phone"
You're the first person who would be switching from N1 to G1 or Cliq .....
Yeah, it's an awful phone, I'll give $250 for it just to end your frustration.
Strange, I'm on a different network, in a different country, and I too suffer from data "freeze".
only way to fix is power cycle or airplane mode and back...

This post is everything I wanted to say. Don't downgrade yourself to a lower phone because you are having lousy service provider issues - even though I love T-mobile, it may just not be for you. I do believe though you are trying to be a forum "troll".. (thread starter).
Well the SMS not sending (and having to reboot to fix) seems to be an issue with the OS from what I have been reading.
Meh.. I'm willing to bet that the op either needs to do a factory reset or exchange his phone if it's defective. Obviously his experience is far from typical.
Yeah I haven't had any of these issues, my N1 gets the same signal and speedtest results as my G1. If T-Mob is the problem in your area then a new phone likely wont resolve your problems, if you really think its the phone try a factory reset and see if you still have these issues or if an application you installed is causing them. If you really want to get a new phone go for it, but I think your experience will be less than stellar after using the N1. If you want to sell it let me know how much.
its kinda weird for me, I can receive all the MMS I want but my phone will not send anything MMS, via WIFI or EDGE (ATT). It all worked when I got my phone but since flashing different roms it has been reduced to only getting MMS.. APN's are correct also
any idea's?

I sure as hell was. And you're right, until android is stable and dependable there's little about it that's super.
Keep in mind many of the issues can be fixed with software updates.
Other than the market, data, sms, browser, camera and ram issues, the others are relatively minor though admittedly abundant. I have issues daily but I stopped wanting the next iPhone (or older android version) when I stopped expecting my nexus to be as stable as Windows is on my desktop and laptop. I wanted the nexus to be a little computer which made all the shortcomings really frustrating.
But Google wants a large stake in the mobile operating system industry and the nexus is their chance to shine.
The nexus one has great hardware and its googles baby, it should receive the majority of androids attention.
So if you don't want to root the nexus, which was fun with the old g1 but now id like a phone I don't have to fix my self with weekly or even daily Rom updates (which i completely understand is an awesome and valuable option but I think those who root have very few issues and are largely intolerant of people who want fixes but don't want to root, like me : / ),
I understand that its bizarre that there are so many problems but don't jump ship, when Google finally starts addressing all of the issues you'll be satisfied. Think of this phone as beta, that's what i have learned to do, because it has enormous potential! So give it at least until Google gets an update out which really should be soon.
I don't get it.. I'm not rooted and I don't have any of these issues.. is my phone a factory freak or something?

When will T-mobile release OTA

I got my HD2 last friday and i love it thus far, but i cant help be bothered by problems that just started monday. Such as it drops from 3G-E-G and goes back when i'm in the same position. Today the phone froze on, Message lag and every time i turn my phone from sleep i get this message.
"Cannot connect for a unknown reason. To check your connection settings and change them if needed tap settings. If the problem continues reset your mobile device according to your manufactures documentation and try again"
Even when it has full bars. I know a lot of these problems are software related and not hardware I would return the phone but i bought it new from ebay so i cant. Starting to regret this should of gone for the Nexus One.
Since you just got the phone last Friday, did you do much research on this phone? If you had, you would have read on the T-Mo HD2 forums and on here that there have been issues with the phone.
Research would also have suggested to you that the good number of the issues of lagging, freezing, and just plain weirdness on the phone can be attributed to the HTC/Sense Messaging app on the phone. What a number of owners have done is to disable this messaging app and to start using the standard WinMo messaging app. I've had my phone since release day and can say that with the HTC/Sense Messaging, I experienced the weirdness. Since flashing to a cooked ROM and disabling this, I have not experienced any of it at all.
Having said all that, it sounds like you're already frustrated with this and are having second thoughts. But you're in luck since the remorse period for you has not expired. So, I wholeheartedly recommend that you return the phone and get the Nexus One to avoid any future frustration with the phone.
I did do research, also some people have stated their aren't issues. Also i got this phone through EBAY so no remorse period. I like it, i'm just wondering when will Tmobile/HTC release an update that fix all these problems?

In that case, I suggest finding out from those people without issues why they don't have them and trying them on your phone. As for no remorse period, my bad.
And as for when T-Mo and HTC will release fixes? Perhaps we can ask our friends in the UK how long it's taken HTC to fix their issues. It sounds like they still have them even though they got the phone months ahead of us, so I'm not too hopeful.

I wouldn't be surprised is there are no more official updates released, as the phone is over 6 months old already. I suggest doing some reading and try to work out the problems yourself. It's a great and very versatile phone with tons of options and potential if you learn how to use WinMo and work out any kinks or problems you come across. There are tons of resources and people to help on this forum. Are you familiar with Windows Mobile, or is this your 1st Windows phone?
Well i hope they do. I do like the phone a lot love the big screen. I did have WM phone it was the Dash but i didnt do much to it..

Calling it a Day!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just to air my frustrations about the I9000. I have had this handset since it was released and its time to get rid.
I have been very patient with firmware updates and such....and it packs some brilliant hardware in theory but it just does not cut the mustard. I had the I8000 (Omnia 2) prior to this phone and it was exactly the same (except windows OS) because every time samsung brought out a new firmware it was still littered with bugs.
I know people Root their Handsets (I have done all the hacks and speedmods, etc) and rave about the speeds customisation, etc but i still get FCs and apps resetting themselves to default every so often with or without modding.
For example today i had no music showing in my music player but thought oh well....wait......wait. It appeared 10 minutes later. Recorded a video...or so i thought but nothing was saved. The Ringtones i have set are gone and i have to go through everything from scratch. This happens randomly maybe a few times a month. There is always something wrong somewhere and then i have to boot the I9000 down.....Everything is then fine for a while but always raises its ugly head at some point........WTF.
Now i hate to say it but i find myself drawn more and more to the iphone but feel like cutting my hands off or committing suicide for thinking these thoughts...they are blasphemous. I cannot help it though because i have grown to dislike the galaxy s and do not know any other handset that reviews say are better. Maybe its just the Android OS being generic and having to cater for a million different models of handset but surely then this is samsungs fault for not incorporating universal fixes.
If you read this and are deciding to get the galaxy s i would advise not to..... wait for something better now.
Well I have to say that JPY is a very decent firmware. I didn't have any major issue with it, it's fast (without any kind of lag fix) and it's stable . I rooted my SGS and got rid off Samsung's bloatware and I really like the phone now.
There's only two things that bother me, but it has nothing to do with software: I hate speaker position (international version) and also lack of flash/light.
So maybe you should buy a W7 or Symbian phone.
I don't know what to say to you, except you're doing something wrong if you're getting so many FC.
About the ringtones: I've experienced this problem when I deleted thumbnails from gallery (DCIM/thumbnails), at least I think it was because of that. Rebooted the phone and didn't delete the folder since then and never got the issue again.
So I would still recommend this phone, but it still depends on the person who gets it and for how much money.
Peace out.
dude ur phone has a virus. mine had one too exactly the same symptoms as your phone. did a reflash of 2.2 + factory reset phone is working like a charm now.
Im with the original OP. Way too many issues to deal with - I love what the device has to offer - but if I have to worry everytime go I to turn it on if it will work - its not worth it.
If I could have my SGS with the dependability and build quality of an HTC - that would be perfect (I use HTC as an example because all of the ones I have owned have been solid devices).
Yeah thanks opica.....should mention that only really get FCs with some apps that are obviously on the market but not meant for or tested properly on this handset...... overall i should clarify i dont get that many at all. Its mostly just the other things i have experienced such as recording a video and then the handset telling me that the MP4 file is unsupported, i reboot it still does not work so i record another video...this is also an mp4 file and plays. Its just **** like that constantly. I am on JPY but even that firmware gets confused every so often. Like i said i have had 2 samsung phones now both were flagship models at the time but both have fallen short because something this hyped should be the dogs bollocks. But they are not. Whoever says otherwise is kidding themselves IMO.
guys I totally sympathise because I have the voda 16GB SGS and it is fu**ing awful SW im not kidding Eg bbc news app takes about 3 mins to load plus it feezes up all the time to the point where it is unusable. I am unable to answer calls as it just shows the answer call screen but the screen is frozen and this is on the official 2.2 updated from sammy after a reset AHHHHH
However after speaking to and getting no where with samsung i decided i had a phone thats unusable and samsung are not doing a thing so my options were sell it and get an IP4 followed by shotgun insertion to mouth or just bite the bullet and flash a custom rom
WOW I installed darkys v8.0 and its is like a whole new phone that bbc news app now loads instantly no freezing no lagging no issues at all so far. Well besides battery life since I cant put the thing down now. Even WiFi connects in a second now. So amazing work by Darky and team.
Im not promoting this rom go choose our own but im just telling you guys i was in the same boat and now i love the SGS if your out of options and you love the hardware get a new rom.
Someone once said "buy a phone for its hardware capabilities then customize the SW to your specifications, then you will have your perfect phone"
Flash a custom FW? As someone else said, Darky's is a fine one to try.

Exactly... There is loads of custom ROMs posted here on xda.
I had a feeling that the software will be pretty ****ty at the beginning, but I kinda hoped that some decent custom rom will come out, if samsung wasn't able to build one.
My first choice would be nitr0's Insanity, but when JPY came out, it was good enough for me.
Again, I have NO problems now when I sorted everything out, it's merely playing with the looks of the desktop
Give Darky's V8.0 a try

My 1st gen Vibrant, advice

Hello,
I really love the screen on this phone, the hardware capabilities (720p rec, etc.) and although newer and better processors in phones are coming out I like this 1 enough to hold me over for a long time.
so here is my issue:
I purchased my vibrant about 2 weeks after came out, and the biggest problem I faced initially was the problem with the gps. At this point I have not even use gps is the first month I bought it, instead I just use google maps in follow the directions it gives me.
Since that time, I have rooted my phone. I was really happy to get the first update that was rolled out, even though it was rooted. I have heard of all the difference solutions to fix the gps but is it really worth the effort to practically void my warranty even further than rooting it by opening it up and trying to solder whatever antenna is in there.
Now I know my phone is covered under samsung warranty. I should also mention the other big problem I have with it is the battery life. If I can fix these 2 issues I would love the phone forever.
here's my question:
is it feasible and worth the effort to get my phone returned back to samsung so that the battery and gps are of the newest generation?
does anyone have experience doing this and how willing is samsung to work with me?
Finally if I do end up getting a replacement then I know I will have to un root my phone before I send it to samsung. I'm not stupid but I just haven't flashed any roms before. if I did get my phone back to stock settings, then would I lose all of the applications and I paid for and all the customization I have done to the phone (contacts, accounts, data)?
also just curious but I haven't received the 2.2 over the air update yet am I even going to get it since my phone is rooted? I figure I may as well try 2.2 before I actually send in the phone.
I know these are a lot of questions but I really like this phone and I want to get it to work.
thank you and I appreciate any suggestions or advice for me.

New and old Vibrants alike have GPS problem.
I don't have an answer to all your questions, but what I can tell you is that you should not wait for your phone to update to 2.2 because it is an over-the-air update.
Follow these instructions if you want to update your phone:
http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/Samsu...-upgrade-to-Android-2-2-Froyo-now/td-p/678871
As far as I've heard the newer ones after 10/10 don't seem to have the same problem. It may be worth it to take it to the store and show them how bad the GPS is. They may exchange it for you. I'd unroot and go back to stock first.
That won't address the battery issue, but that's generic to most of these newer phones. You can do tweaks to get more life out of them, but that seems to be about it.
if I unroot and go back to stock is it going to erase my applications and contacts, and settings?
I bought it online so I would have to send it back to letstalk.com, I'll have to check out the return policy.
thanks for the replies.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
You will not lose your paid apps, they are tied to your google account. Use titanium backup before you unroot your phone to backup all your data, including app data. When you get your new phone, you will have to reroot and then you can restore everything from titanium.
You can try to get a warrantly replacement from Samsung rather than using letstalk, I think it's a pain to exchange with them, but I'm not sure.
As said above, Titanium backup will handle it. I have my phone from someone on this board, so I had to go directly with Samsung. Once I could get the tech support person to understand the phone just didn't work it was easier. Don't know how that would go with the GPS. Mine was for the phone not working as a phone, ie, no connection to the network.

I find that to be incorrect. My Vibrant has a 11.01 (2011 January) build date on it and the gps is horrible. I've tried every rom, but I do notice the gps being a little more better with certain roms.

Here is my story:
I phone up t-mobile and say my GPS doesn't work. They made me go through a four day dance trying stuff, but if it doesn't work, it doesn't work.
They then replaced it with a brand new phone.
And they charged me $10 shipping & handling for the new phone.
Before the phone never could reliably get and hold on to a GPS lock; afterwards it locks in seconds and never drops.
Hmm, threads I had seen were saying it was better. I have an older one that I just fixed myself. I was hoping they'd gotten their act together and fixed their antenna construction. Its such a simple thing to fix, you'd think they'd do it at the plant.

False, I've personally used Vibrants made after 10/10 and the GPS is no better than ones produced earlier.
There is no change in hardware, and it has never been proven that a hardware revision on the GPS was made on phones manufactured after 10/10. Just speculation and rumor.

Yeah, I think I've got to agree on this one.
In the gps case, I really think it is really a hit or miss issue. My gps works pretty decently but my hubby's doesn't work at all. Even when we were both stock, I could lock on some birds but his was never able to. On top of that, when I flashed Nero onto my phone, my gps got even better. Granted, I don't think it would ever see a thing if it was working on standalone; but with wireless networks on, this thing would (and has) pinpoint(ed) me on a moving train accurately.
Aside from firmwares (now), the only difference between them was the build dates: his - 07/10, mine - 09/10.

[Q] Nexus One reboot when using 3g

hello guys I have a nexus with one gingerbread 2.3.4 and when I use the 3G network after 2-3 minutes the phone restarts. with this bug I can not use Internet
any ideas? Thanks!
Yes. Me to.
What ROM and/or kernel combo you guys using?
I have the stock rom ota gingerbread 2.3.4, nothing changed, full stock. I recently tried miui 1.5.20 the problem is the same. may be a hardware problem?
Does the phone get hot to the touch on the back? Does the phone still reboot if you turn off 3g data and you go exclusivly Wifi?
Had the same issue with my old Nexus 1. Called HTC support and they immediately said it was a defective board. RMA'd and got refurb, but at least it does not reboot when I use 3g.
Good luck.
thanks jhsiao36, think if I update the radio version 5.12.00.08 can change something or brought it in for service?

I didn't help for me. I tried the 5.12.00.08 radio and it suffered from the same 3g reboots. But when I disabled 3g and used Wifi, never suffered from reboots.
If the phone is still under warranty, definitely encourage you to call them. HTC's customer and tech support is the best I've ever seen. They replaced it no questions asked, even though my phone is rooted and bootloader unlocked.

+1 They are awesome to deal with. It really makes me sad that they are starting to lock down their phones, because I won't buy a phone if I can't run custom ROMs on it.
But with the radio, I highly doubt flashing to 5.12 would help. Google released the 5.08 radio with the OTA update to Gingerbread. If 5.12 was any better, I'm sure they would've included it. There had to have been a reason they stuck with 5.08.
If you aren't afraid of losing anything, or already made backups, you could try the passimg method of giving you a completely stock install. See if the problem occurs with that as well. This would rule out software vs hardware.
No one can really solve it?

I really don't think it can be resolve without sending it back to HTC for a replace/repair. As I said in my previous posts, I've tried 3 different ROMs - stock, cyanogenmod 6 and 7 - all exhibit the same issue - reboot when on 3g, but perfect if on Wifi. And yes, it will reboot even on a freshly install ROM (no apps installed).
HTC knows of this issue and they will replace/repair. I got a refurb and it works perfectly - stock, cyanogenmod 6 or 7.
Sorry, probably not the answer you wanted to hear, but search on <insert your favorite search engine> and you will find that this is a fairly widespread problem.
Thank you for your answer! It does not work, had sent a factory repair.
After several tests, on Monday I sent the phone in for service. I think it's a hardware problem, maybe a bad batch of motherboards.
my S / N: HT05... and your?
I will tell you just back from assistance.
Did you ever overheat it? I believe that the N1 has a problem if you really push it that it can overheat. Once it happens once it will happen again and every time it takes less and less to cause the reboot. Eventually it reboots just with 3G.
I was running mine in the car-mount with GPS, Google Maps (3G), screen on brightest, on a hot summer day while charging ... and it rebooted. Didn't think much of it but then it started rebooting every time I used GPS and charging.
In the end it was pretty near useless ... rebooting all the time. I sent it in twice (the first time they couldn't reproduce the problem) and the second time they replaced the board. Problem solved.
Now I am very careful not to overheat it.
