Gingerbread enables 32-bit colors on our EVO screens! - EVO 4G General

Title says it all. I can confirm that gingerbread renders everything in gorgeous 32-bit colors!!!!!!
For example, the weather channel app would look like crap, now it looks great.
Wallpapers look STUNNING.
Press and hold the home button to open the recent used apps menu, notice how the black blackground is blending in so nicely. on 2.2 it looks like crap.
Edit: Screenshots up. XDA Adds a lot of compression to both photos but you can still tell the difference.

Cant wait to see this

anyone else able to confirm this? and what program did you use to determine its rendering in 32bit? just wondering

This is correct....

ha I remember you talking about this on IRC.. Good find!

That's freaking amazing! I can't wait! Are you running gingerbread on your EVO?

I don't understand why this required Gingerbread to resolve it? but i'm looking forward to no more color banding in wallpapers either way

as a graphics guy, this is probably the best bit of news to come out of the whole gingerbread smorgasbord of news...
utterly awesome!

Yes, I was running gingerbread alpha 3. It's still pretty buggy and with a lot of things missing so I just went back to stock 3.70.

I also just wanted to clarify that our EVOs always had this capability, but only Android 2.3 renders everything in 32-bit color. It's all software.

intelligence is overrated.
http://bit.ly/fSLf4v

I went ahead and flashed the alpha 2.3 and honestly saw NO DIFFERENCE in color reproduction.
I know all the places online say the gingerbread renders in 32 bit but I believe its only certain apps and screens that are actually in 32 bit. I could be wrong though
sent from my DAMN EVO

I'll rephrase my response, since it wasn't what I meant. The evo 4g isn't capable of displaying 32-bit color.
And my response wasn't meant to be disrespectful. I'm simply asking for a source isn't of just saying that he used "his eyes".

Hmm, can't see the difference, must be my display.

Use it a little bit more and you will certainly notice the difference. For example, check out wallpapers and how there is NO color banding effect.
I wouldn't have posted if I had not noticed such difference. Again, it's a subtle effect most apparent in apps like the Weather channel. If you're in doubt, run it on gingerbread then do the same on Froyo, then come tell me you can't see a difference.

1.6 was limited in the amount ram it could use 2.1 let's you use all of it.
I sound like a total a-hole when saying this but I couldn't possibly care less about 2.1, the big winner for me will be 2.2. Hear me out:
The amount of colours displayed isn't a major issue for me, even with 16-bit the X10 performs well enough. The increase in ram will be nice but again, the updated stock image performs very well even with a limited amount.
The reason I'm looking forward towards 2.2 is mostly the JIT improvements in Dalvik. Even if it's marketspeak to say that there's a 400% increase in speed there has to be atleast some truth to it. Even a 100% change (which is very doable) would be awesome, so it finally feels like I have a 1ghz Snapdragon.
The current speed is like running with lead shoes, it will get you there but that's about it. 2.2 replaces those shoes with running shoes.
Ok, retarded analogies, but you get the point.

1. Turn on your phone
2. Use it normally
3. Wait until September for SE to release the 2.1 update.

Ive had the pleasure of using both 2.1 and 2.2. Used 2.1 on Milestone/Droid and on a Nexus One. And of course, 2.2 on the same Nexus. I was amazed by how a simple 2.2 update can change a phone's usability.
Just to give you an idea:
At 2.1, the browser speed of the Nexus One was practically the same as my iPhone 3GS.
At 2.2, the Nexus One finished loading the page just as the iPhone was at it's halfway point.

SPB UI Beta

Anybody a part of this beta yet?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Can you clarify? I have no clue what you are asking. What is spd beta?
Pardon me....that's supposed to be SPB. SPB Mobile Shell is sort of a home replacement. It's a really drastic difference though. It's been around for Windows Mobile for a while and now they have an open beta to test the Android version. Here's a link. They have a nice little video that gives a good idea of what it's like and also a direct link to where you can register to get into the beta testing group.

While the implementation looks cool, I think there's a reason why the "3D" concept never took off on the desktop, despite many tries - it's just not a useful or efficient analogy for interacting with a computer.
Does it really provide any meaningfully enhanced or fundamentally better/easier/faster interaction to see screens spin around on a 3D drum than simply sliding linearly from side to side? Not really. Cool, sure, but that's about it.
But I tend to be a minimalist with it comes to a lot of things - just because you can, doesn't necessarily mean you should.
I think I'd rather have the phone (HTC Thunderbolt) than the UI App... lol Looks pretty slick

For me its not so much the 3d aspect of it as it is the tools for managing Widgets, editing folders and apps and what might be done with it once it is released. It also looks incredibly smooth(better than mine now) as it renders at 60 fps.

haha! I used SPB to make my WM phone interface more like Android. Never thought there would be an SPB FOR Android.

Heck I would just like to hear if someone actually got invited.
i havent heard back please someone post this apk....i agree maybe we souldnt use it just cuz we can but it looks so dang cool. as a geek u need to play with it
i also wanted to add that i used to love this on wondows mobile. i have to running on the touch pro with less then 512...it was a very slow phone compared to times now and spb did justice with making everything not laggy. sure it ripped thru my batt but thats why i have extras layiong around with a full charge on them i really think this would be amazing on a device with 1ghz and the android os. i had more problems with touchflo 3d then i did on spb ms3. for those who think it will bog down the phone, well i cant say for sure but i dont think ull notice a difference except batt life
hey anyone get this apk yet? idk why but i wanna try it really bad
It's been a while since I've heard anything on this. Anybody have any news to share or new info?

Just got my Nexus S ATT. My thoughts.

Coming from HTC Inspire btw.
Size-Build is awesome imo, perfect screen size, nice and lightweight and does not feel cheap imo.
Yea its superamoled but wtf at the yellowish tint....why did they do this?? My Captivate looked better and this is one of the main selling points for me, is there anything we can do to get it back to the other color temperature? Seriously....
Tried the camera a bit, not impressive at all, neither was the inspire so eh whatever.
Everything is FAST! I love it!
Stock Android!!! Woooh! No Blocking of Apps! Woooh!
Wifi seems a bit slow, it started doing a restore off the bat and downloading all my apps from the inspire and even the background! wow! Really cool feature that I had no Idea about, but some apps installed and then I kept getting a bunch of errors saying "insufficient memory" I guess I gotta do them one by one...
Thats pretty much it, Im satisfied but the screen tint is kinda leaving a bad taste in my mouth, the SuperLCD seemed more sharp and brighter then this and the whites were WHITE and the blacks werent too shabby either, dunno wtf is going on as the Screen on my old captivate was great and I loved it, this is eh...
Really hoping I didnt make the wrong choice here, the Xperia arc I had my eyes on and the only thing it didnt have was a FFC and I can live without it, beyond that I like the looks, bigger screen, lighter weight, on the arc better and sony unlocked the bootloader on their new devices so updates will come regardless, way better camera, I just dont know about this whole screen thing....
i just got mine today, so thought i'd chime in too.
build quality: not cheap imo, the ergonomics dept should pat themselves on the back. feels just right
doesn't feel laggy
sensors problem. compass seems a bit off, and the best gps lock i've had is 10m error after about 60s. i stood outside and waited, no lock. resorted to downloading gps status and downloaded the additional gps data. this seems to be the only way it's locked on. compared to a desire, this is hella slow and crappy for gps.
camera quality, i think for a phone it's good enough. for the ffc, so it's vga, but at what resolution does skype mobile use? what's that? it's not working? oh well. i think vga is fine for video calls. anything else is just additional cost.
about to test with music and haven't put a sim in yet to test the phone.
i bought it for development, so i'm now going to start messing about with it, but the phone feels nice and zippy, but disappointed with the sensors (will be testing outside tomorrow) as i'm looking to do a lot of augmented reality dev.

I think he's talking about how everything looks squished down and stretched a little. I think it's due to the difference in Screen Size, since most of the ROMs started out as ports to the EVO or EVO Shift.

I'll give you a visual example - the extensions in my Chrome.
Originally, they look like this:

But after distortion, they look like this:

The distortion is off by about 7 percent, so it is a lot less than what is shown, but in real life and a larger image size, 7 percent is a lot too.

Yeah, I've been here since November, so I have no idea how a new leak works. Sorry if I'm being too impatient.
I kinda like the distortion (well don't mind for now). The icons seem a little smaller and yes i can tell they are "squished" but doesn't bother me too badly, other than my girlfriend doesn't like her pictures now because they make her look slightly short and wide....

[POLL] Who wants to enable Samsung's mdnie on CM9?

So today I flashed CM9 Beta 1, and I noticed the screen was different. The colors were fine, but the text was fuzzy and the icons were blurry. I didn't realize that this was because they disabled Samsung's mdnie coloring, which in my opinion, made the text look a lot better. So who hopes for Beta 2 that they re-enable the old colors because it looks awful now! I know this sounds immature, but I've seen so many complaints and I have to agree.
Where is the poll?
Also, please include an option for "indifferent".

Got a place I can check that I could tell better than others?
My eyes ain't what they used to be, and I would like to see if I can tell, where it is supposed to be most obvious.
Still, I would rather an option to switch it on/off over stuck with one or the other, if possible.
When it comes to Android, I always tend to go with the "more options" path
God I agree with this. Please change it back. I'm getting more use to it but it does not really look all that better, and has more negatives than positives.

Maybe it's something more complicated like differently manufactured screens or something (just taking a shot in the dark).
Some areas are better than others. I see it with black text on gray. There is a difference. Small, but you get the colors right you'll see it. Smaller the font the better it gets too.
I vote back or options.
I've been using voodoo color and then I updated to beta 1 and the white color is way off it looks like to me but it could just be not use to using my phone without voodoo

this was most likely removed due to the fact that CM roms use nothing from the OEM. If the is an OEM setting it will never be added to CM roms.

No, this was removed because the devs on "our" end were experimenting with it. They even claimed they were unsure what it did, but that Noobnl said it looked better without it. Read the blog there's more info there. They are also letting people test a temp boot kernel with it re-enabled so they can decide before the next release whether to re-enable it or not. I just with in the meantime that they would release a perm flashable of the alternate kernel isntead of just the temp bootable.

Really? I'll have to check with the CM team as they make it a point to never add any OEM features or settings. If its not part of the AOSP coding or CM coding then normally it is not added to Official from versions
