I got locked HTC Wildfire. Is there any way to know what operator is the phone locked for?
I want to buy code (since j-tag pin out is still unknown) the provider wants me to send code of operator.

If its locked to specific carrier the splash screen/boot animation when phones first booted/powered on should have providers logo.

You can HARDSPL to CID unlock your phone.
Unfortunately, there is no SIM unlock option available at this time on XDA. You can either google "IMEI check" and go thru them, or if you have a Tmobile account that's been active for a few months, you can call them and ask them to unlock your phone.
I dont know whether we have to go with CID unlock - software or

Use a paid service. You'll have to know the IMEI number (easy enough)

nope the sim lock resides in a different part of the phone from the OS so flashing won't affect the lock or unlock status of the phone

Only few website manage to unlock sim and make a business with it
Even the WM community is more active... Android is a deception for me in this point of view...
after flashing with the ion multi 5 rom mines is unlocked......just put an orange sim in my vodafone (uk) handset and works.
vodafone UK ones are unlocked by default
actually there are unlock services on here and for most recent winmo phones you have to pay anyways

Although I have a HTC Dream, unlocked, I'm considering to buy a Magic since it has more RAM (Vodafone/TMN Portugal sells 32A Boards).
My question is, isn't rooting enough to remove the Sim Lock?
I mean, we flash new SPL, new recovery, and new ROM. How and where is the SIM Lock status retained?
Isn't it overwritten by the flash process? Does the operator checks in real time the IMEI against their allowed IMEI database?

I believe that rooting, does nothing to the SIM code. You have to get the unlock code from your current carrier, in order to use another carrier's SIM card. But, once it's unlocked, it will stay unlocked. (unlike the iPhone) I got my unlock code by calling the carrier, and they emailed it to me. It keeps the resale value up

There is no SimLock or so on the device.

Yea, I have the same problem here in Austria with a A1-branded ROM, no simlock but this nasty provider logo on startup (and some provider-adapted settings, like A1.net mail account as an additional mail accout type).
I think that only a custom ROM will be able to remove those operator customizations.

Its impossible to remove the operator logo at the moment. its part of the ROM.
