[Q] Which Custom Froyo ROM with android-wired-tether? - Droid X General

I want to use Android Wired Tether on my Droid X with the recent Verizon OTA stock Froyo 2.2 update. I want to USB tether to many different Windows PCs.
I loaded the 2.2 Update over the Verizon network yesterday as usual.
I downloaded Android Wired Tether from the google code depot (wired_tether_1_4.apk) and installed the application.
I rooted the Droid X OS.
Running "Wired Tether" on the Droid X results in the the error message "Unsupported Kernel!"
The error is what I expected ( but not what I had hoped for ). From what I can gather, some of the networking software was removed from the stock Froyo ROM, contrary to other devices like the HTC incredible.
So my question; is there a ROM which includes the missing software? The "FlyX - birdman" ROM available on the Wiki page looks promising. I'm hoping the experts here can confirm my suspicions before I begin experimenting.
Thanks!

I am looking for this also. There are a few good reasons to use wired tether. No speed loss, your phone is charging, and no problems with rogue intrusion/detection.
I have tried wired_tether_1.4.apk on the first leaked 2.2 with no luck.
There may be a need to edit your tethered NAI before using Wired_Tether_1.4.apk also. Any insights on this?

Im not sure, but wireless tether works fine, im sure the speed isnt that much of a difference, and plug it into ur comp still if ur battery is low

Is this on 2.2 OTA or Leak, etc?
Your sig still says 2.1 rooted.
I'm not able to get my WiFi tethering working with 2.2 Leak.

Looks like we need a custom kernel to use wired_tether(the stock kernel has the necessary files removed). BUT, as far as I know there is nothing but the stock kernel for Droid X, atm. Correct me if Im wrong please.
The AOSP project for the DroidX does look interesting though.
There are lots of other options for tether but if you want to use USB, Wired_tether is preferred over PDAnet and easytether since there is no need for a client install. ANY Windows 7 machine (has RNDIS natively) and most Linux boxes with a USB port can instantly tether to the wired_tether program with zero modification.
I'd love to see wired_tether working on the Droid X.
PleaseStirMe

I don't know about "wired-tether", but "Easy Tether" uses USB. It works on 2.2. I am using it now. The connection is very reliable but not very fast. It does NOT require root. There is a free and a paid version.
It is a bummer that wifi tether does not stay connected. But I can recommend Easy Tether.

[Q] [SOLVED] EVO Mobile Hotspot / Wireless Tether

Just got and rooted the Evo. Currently trying out Fresh Evo with the Netarchy kernel. I achieved a 1.2Ghz overclock and the higher refresh rate did wonders for the performance!
Now unfortunately the 1 real feature I got the Evo for doesn't work on these stock-ish roms. I am on the go these days and have a laptop, a desktop, and a phone I'd like to connect to the mobile hotspot feature. I know "tether" apps exist such as PDANet but I'd rather use the built in hot-spot feature to connect multiple devices.
Does any hack, rom or kernel exist to unlock this feature built into Froyo 2.2?
P.S I did use the search button just nothing recent or relevant.
--------------------------------------------
*** Solution #1 ***
--------------------------------------------
1.) Put bcm4329.ko in /sdcard/android.tether/ (I'm on rooted vanilla)
2.) Download the newest version of Wireless Tether at http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
The newest version supports WPA2-PSK whereas the one on the android market only supports WEP. Pre8 also seems to have better support for the Evo on 2.2
--------------------------------------------
*** Solution #2 ***
--------------------------------------------
1.) Install Cyanogen 6, which is based on the original AOSP Google code. Froyo 2.2 by Google original code included the hotspot feature and it was modified in the Sprint release. The built in hot spotting feature of 2.2 will work without a tethering application in Cyanogen 6.
Yes the hotspot works on stock Rom. What you are looking for is wireless tether in the market. You know the market has a search feature right? Don't use hotspot it cost money. 30 bucks a month.. you want to pay that? Figured not.
The so called hack is just being root so you can install the wireless tether since with security on Sprint won't let you use the "free hotspot app" since they charge. That's it.

I'm running fresh as well and just to make sure I wasn't crazy, I'm posting this from the wifi tethering that he included with the rom. It seems to work just fine.
Yeah that's the one from market.. free to use. Use sprints WiFi and you have to pay $30 a month..

Well I know how to use the search function, but apparently you don't know how to read.
"I know "tether" apps exist such as PDANet but I'd rather use the built in hot-spot feature to connect multiple devices."
I also know it costs money through Sprint that's why I'm here asking if a hack or rom exists that enables it. Was I really that vague?
PDANet only works to connect 1 device at a time. Not going to work as its a USB tether. I was hoping to just use the 2.2 Froyo settings to enable tethering but I guess wireless tether isnt that big of a deal to use.
Thanks.

Is the sprint wireless hotspot feature different than wireless tethering? Because I don't think it is. Both turn your phone into a WAP.
edit: I just connected 2 laptops and my daughter's ipod to my wireless tethering, so I'm not sure why that wont do what you're looking for.
No what you have not done is any searching at all.
I am not trying to be an ass but he told you what to do and you fell back on your lack of any researching at all and said something silly.
You did not search for tether or wireless tether, had you, you would have found wireless tether for root users, and if you would have searched here you would have found two things, wireless tether and usb tether.
I would suggest trying the market search again and not stopping with basic apps like pda net and looking at the most obvious search results.
If you search for hotspot you will get crap... if you search for what you are trying to do which is wireless tether, you will quickly find the app you need

To add my two cents to this post....I'm using fresh rom as well and it comes with wireless tether PREINSTALLED! To clarify things for you. The wireless tether app does the SAME thing that sprint hotspot does including connecting more than one device at a time. The only difference its that its free. If for some reason your fresh rom doesn't have the app. Do a search for it on the market or use the link posted on the post before mine. Use wireless tether for root users vers 2.0.5 pre 7 or pre 8. Those two work best for the evo on fresh.

And again, no one is listening. I know what Wireless Tether is. That's why I was knocking on all of you for not reading my post. I know what android market is. I'm not that retarded. I wanted to know if any ROMS can use the AOSP 2.2 built in feature? If not I wanted to know if a hack existed to enable it.
I cant enable WEP/WPA with wireless tether. Apparently people in this Airport are happy to use my phone since its open access.
I found the option to enable encryption but it only allowed WEP which is lame. I downloaded a new version off the developers website and it allows WPA2. I'll just use this app if no ROMS have the built in feature working.

In addition I said the built in feature to Froyo 2.2 not the stuff in Android market. I wanted to know if a ROM has a working STOCK HOTSPOT feature working so I dont have to use a tether app. The android operating system has this built in, I'd like ot use that one... Does Cyanogen have this feature working or am I SOL and have to use an unsecured Wireless Tether?

What? Wireless tether supports WPA encryption... meaning that they need a password in order to access your wifi spot... look on settings.

I just edited my last post. The version I had only supported WEP which doesnt fly with me... I downloaded the developers version and it supports WPA2.
I'd still like to know if any of the AOSP builds support the built in froyo 2.2 feature for hotspotting.
I believe Wifi Tether is Wireless Adhoc connection (may not work on some devices) and Sprint Hot Spot is a WiFi connection (access point)
I have not seen a hack for the Sprint Hot Spot. It sounds like it looks for your Phone mac to verify you are paying them before it allows you to use it.
As far as I know, roms don't have this 'hack' for the built in mobile hotspot feature. I'm a Hero user, so I'm not familiar with Evo roms. As stated before, just use Wireless Tether. In my opinion, it has everything someone could want.

The only custom ROM that you can install that uses the Froyo built-in hotspot feature is Cyanogenmod 6. It works great.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT!! Schwweeet! So if I install Cyanogen 6 I can just use the built in code developed by Google to enable hotspotting? Not a tether app?
I knew it!!!!
Can you please confirm this works as I expect? I assume it works because it is built off of AOSP which is not modified by Sprint or other carriers, which means the built in code from Google just works right?
You lose 4g and hdmi with cyanogen 6. But the built in froyo hot spot works.

[Q] does rom manager / wireless tether work on droid pro?

Hi Peoples,
I'm expecting my droid pro to arrive tomorrow. Was wondering if anyone knew if rom manager (appbrain.com/app/rom-manager/com.koushikdutta.rommanager) and wireless tether (appbrain.com/app/wireless-tether-for-root-users/android.tether) work on the droid pro.
also, does koushik's bootstrap for droid 2 and droid x work on droid pro?
lastly, if i try to install rom manager after rooting my droid pro, might it brick my phone - and i assume currently there would be no way to restore it?
THANKS!
while i certainly am not technical by any means, I can confirm that I was able to install rom manager and wireless tether to my rooted pro.
I haven't tried to actually use rom manager since I don't know if clockwork mod recovery works with the pro.
I can confirm however that wireless tether is working fine on the pro (unfortunately for some reason though my work computer says that the wireless signal is blocked by my administrator)
Wireless tether does work. I was going to try and flash clockwork but it only shows the x and droid 2. I didn't know if either would work and didn't want to take a chance on my wife's phone lol
Which version of wireless tether are you using?
I just downloaded the one from the market. I take a look at it when my wife gets home though

Quick question -
I'm considering upgrading to a Droid Pro. Does the tethering app you guys referenced also allow USB tethering?
I would love to tether over WiFi but my employer has disabled connections to ad-hoc networks, so I currently am relegated to USB tethering on my Touch Pro 2.
Tether
Hi All
The only app that seems to work for wired and wireless tether is PDANet. Works really well.
I tried Barnacle and Wireless Tether and neither would work.
I rooted with Z4 without issue. Have not tried Clockwork yet.
I can confirm that wireless tether DOES work, but only as ad hoc. There is a hack for the 3G mobile hotspot out there which gives you full infrastructure wifi tethering.
Well that's good news, eh?
Whether I can use this PDAnet app to tether over USB, or figure out this hack to enable full-on WiFi tethering, I should be all set. Hopefully I have the mental capacity to figure it all out. I have a little experience with custom ROMs etc on WinMo, but this will be my first dive into Android.
I guess I'll pull the trigger on a Droid Pro this weekend. Wish me luck - haha.
It's def worth it. I love this phone more and more everyday. Not to mention I bought this outright

PDA Net will connect via Bluetooth also.
anyone get the 3g mobile hotspot hack to work?
i tried dialing ##778, but I just get a message that the number can't be completed as dialed.
Unfortunately my company blocks adhoc connections on my laptop, so I can't use wireless tether
I can confirm Wireless Tether works with a rooted Pro, just use the Z4Root app in the Market.

Cool. Do you think that might be blocked as an ad-hoc network as well? Either way I'm sure I'll figure out a way.
I'm getting pretty excited about this phone. It's exactly the same size as my old Motorola Q9c (personal phone for voice/texts; the Droid Pro will be my work phone for data) so they will fit nicely together in my pocket.
Question - what are the SatNav options on the Droid Pro? Sorry to be so knobby, but I've grown quite dependent on the free Bing navigation on my Touch Pro 2.
Wow, this PDAnet Bluetooth tethering is awesome. Now I can just keep my phone in my pocket - no cable required.

Rom Manager
Sorry for bringing up an old post, but this was the first that had Rom Manager mentioned in it.
Own both HTC Incredible and Moto Droid Pro
So I just rooted my MDP and installed Rom Manager. Wanted to Flash Clockwork but it didn't list the MDP on it. Didn't want to chance flashing for the droid 2 or x and bricking my phone.
Anyways my question is:
If you aren't using Rom Manager and Clockwork to back up /change your roms, what app are you using?
As a droid pro owner the wireless tethering app works and I have 2.0 installed.update takes away access control as well as rom manager installed and working 100%. This is on a rooted droid pro and clockwork recovery works as well with no problems. Just download droid 2 bootstrapped and follow the instructions. I love my droid pro and patiently awaiting custom roms

[Q] Q:2.2.1 Wifi Tether, is it kernel based?

hello all, i got this question: is wifi tether based on kernel capabilities? because am using dk28 and is just not working for me, apk installs fine, open and run but i cant find the connection on my laptop/evo4g. I want to know if the kernel has to support it, if so does the stock dk28(rooted) has support for it or do i have to use a different kernel?
Thank you in advance!
mine works fine..your evo cant see it because android cant see adhoc ..idk about your laptop
I'm not sure what the above poster said about Evo, but this is Epic forum.
So, I had Pre 9 running on 2.1 rooted, would not work on DK28. I read somewhere that Pre 11 was working. Downloaded, turned on and everything was great, so the version makes the difference.
Hope that helps.
To reiterate what was said earlier.
Android phones are not capable of seeing adhoc connections. Which in this case of using WifiTether is what you are creating.
Your laptop should be able to see the connection just fine. I would go back and check some settings in wifirouter and your laptop to make sure you are able to get things working correctly.
Any version of wifirouter after pre11 should work. All the way up to pre15.

Got Wireless tethering to work But....

Ok so I got wireless tethering to work form my rooted Epic 4g to my galaxy tab 10.1 and its pretty cool. I did it with wireless tethering version 3. The only thing is that at first i couldn't get it to work because of the authentication once I turn off the encryption on my Epic it worked perfectly and connected right away. But what I don't get is why it doesn't work with the password if anyone can give me some advise why this is happening it would be cool, Thanks.
Strange, I tether all the time without issue. Should be possible. Are you using an app or built-in settings for tethering.
I got the app version (V3 is the only one that works) . I mean it works,..just not with the password on.
I use wifi tethering with my samsung galaxy phone with tmobile. you should try changing setting in build in tethering app and see if this works. I use 'quick settings' free app from market for quick access to wifi hotspot settings.
I have this problem too, it tethers fine but whenever it comes to things requiring password (like email logins) it rejects the password.
can any one who doesnt have this problem share which software they use for tethering?
how did you get tethering to work? i have tried the wpa_supplicant hack but the wifi drops every 10 seconds. what rom are you running & what supplicant file did you use?
It only works right with wireless tethering app version 3. Apparently if you have the rom that has it built in you shouldnt have any problems.
This is what i used http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I use bluetooth tethering fron my Win Mobile Treo Pro running wmwifirouter. I got tired of trying to root and do the wpa supplicant thing. Android needs to support adhoc wifi out the box across the board. So ridiculous really by now.
Still Cannot Tether
Ok...so Im still on an older phone ( Droid Eris ) but it's rooted running Gingerbread and the wireless tether v.2.07 works great with my laptop but wont work at all with the Galaxy Tab? I really don't understand this. I have tried everything from leaving it completely open to setting up all the appropriate authentication and access control. I tried the link in the thread for 3.0 and even select the Desire..which I think is the basis of the rom I am on...and just got errors in the log.
Anyone else having these issues? Not sure why it works fine on the laptop but not the tablet?
thanks
I am running v 2.0.7 on a myTouch. When I wireless tether with access control on I can check Gmail, but browser will not get websites. If I turn off AC, then browser works OK.

I think that 2.07 is ad-hoc only and honeycomb doesn't support ad-hoc. (someone correct me if I'm wrong). There are a few threads around here somewhere where you can replace/edit a file that allows ad-hoc support. As to your other question, I use Wifi tether-pre11 and it works without issue. I'll link it to you. Make sure you change "device profile" under settings in the app to correspond with your device. I had troubles with the app until I set the device profile to my device. Depending upon your luck, you may have to try a few different pre-release files on wifi tether 3.0 to find the right one. Like I said, pre11 works great for my Epic, but your device may be different. Just don't use the top one (test2) as I recall seeing that its meant for Samsung devices.

Many THANKS for the help!
Just to add a data point, I hadn't tried tethering my Tab to my Thunderbolt until I read this thread. I am running Wireless Tether 2.08pre. I set up access control and also enabled wifi encryption. I used it for about 20 minutes without any problems. That includes email, surfing the internet, and YouTube.
I too can tether the GT 10.1 with my HTC Thunderbolt using Wifi Tether, but am having trouble with the Samsung Droid Charge. Anybody get the Charge to tether successfully? TIA!

Fascinate Tether Methods

Hello, I have been a member of XDA for quite some time but always used it as a resource. I usually always found an answer to my issues and did not need to post...............until I got the fascinate. So I tried the various Tether methods and the only one that has seemed to work for me is the "Easy Tether" method. I am listing all methods and the results I had to keep others from having these issues:
ROM: CM7
Method 1: Barnacle
Mode: Adhoc (Using Samsung Facinate profile)
Result: no connection, being assigned private IP in the 169.254 subnet
Method 2: Built in wireless tether in CM7
mode: Infrastructure
Result: Getting connected but no Internet connection
Method 3: Easy Tether
mode: USB
Result: Success. Followed on screen instructions and worked flawlessly.
Method 4: Wi-Fi tether (from android market)
mode: infrastructure
Result: Getting connected but no Internet connection
Please provide your experiences and we can keep a proper log organized by ROM versions being used.

avoid the Market - This tethers infrastructure mode to Nook color, laptop, etc.
Need to change device profile and setup method in Settings to match the Fascinate. works great on Comrom 2.1 and DInc Pure Speed.

Just set this up on the wife's fassy running rooted stock. Works great to tether her Transformer. I'm not having as good of luck with it on CM7, but haven't mucked about in the newest version much yet.

Worked for me also... same config
Vanilla Gingerbread has it built in the rom no app needed . Both tethering and wifi hotspot.
good day.
have no problems running either Barnacle or Wireless Tether apps. Have used both apps on both 2.1 and 2.2, but running stock rom.
what chipset are you running on your computer that you are tethering with? I was unable to get a connection with anything other than wifi tether pre14.
I have the N6200 wifi chipset and can't get any adhoc connection to work.

N6200... Intel, according to a quick Google search. Try updating your wireless adapter's drivers, at least some of them had massive issues with adhoc mode. I ran into that issue when I first tried to tether, and even now I only have unreliable adhoc (Intel apparently didn't bother to test adhoc mode at all!).
Verizon is working hard to keep the fascinate (and other phones) from tethering using apps, instead making you tether through their built in, allowing them to charge you for it. In my experience however, once you've rooted your phone and flashed a new rom, barnacle usually works well. I've had to uninstall and reinstall a couple of times, but other than that, it's cake.
