What's it like to use a g1? - G1 General

Hi guys,
I've been really itching to get a second phone with a good qwerty keypad and I am really considering a G1. I just tried one out and and the screen resolution and sensitivity is kinda disappointing but I still want one lol
Can anyone tell me whats it like to use the G1 as a daily driver? Is it painfully slow? What about mobile browsing compared to the n1? or the hero? how slow is the g1?
I've used the Hero before and mobile browsing experience was painfully slow. There were times wherein everything really slowed down and I had to reboot everything just to get things done.
Also, whats the best and fastest 2.1 sense rom for daily use? 1.5 sense? Are the froyo roms running well on the G1 or are they really just for novelty?
Thanks!

It's a decent phone, esp. If you get it rooted with the 2.1 Mod. But, it's starting to show it's age after 2 years, and many apps/programs on the phone will slow it down a bit.
Plus, the camera, while it takes good pictures, is lacking. No real Video (w/o the mod), no Flash and no Zoom (but you can do it after you take the pic, WTF).
But as one of the few GSM physical keyboard Smartphones, It's ok, but like I've said, it's age is starting to show, so in like a year you will probably wanna get another phone.

Please, No!..
Youll regret buying such a relic, youre better off buying a G2 when its released later this year...The G1 is the ancestor to all the other phones, you should NOT buy the G1, it struggles to handle 1.6+ w/o....But with a newer phone you can enjoy all features without giving up performance, i just got a slide and its the bomb...But im giving her up to save for the g2 instead...YOU WILL be disappoint...That's a promise.

LOL, thanks for the input guys!
Almost made the mistake of buying, I was kind of expecting performance similar to the Hero or Magic but I guess not. I also tried the touchpro2 and it is a total piece of crap ) Resistive screens does the phone no justice and the OS is just clunky.
Why are there still devs working on the G1 if it can't even handle 1.6 properly? For novelty?

Oh it can handle 1.6 just fine. but 2.1 sucked noodles for so long. Right now Froyo is not bad at all on the G1 though, i use HTC Clay's build off cyanogen and it works perfectly fine for me, it's been like 3 days since i first installed the rom and it's good. It is awesome for how long it's put out, but i bet every g1 owner including myself is just itching to buy their next smartphone asap!
you should wait for the G2, i think everyones gonna jump ship there, im personally waiting to see what the hell is project emerald.

If you try a stock rom then use one of the 2.1+ roms, the stock is much faster...I personally tried this experiment, my stock, nonrooted G1 was much faster than the one clocked all the way to 576...Thats a damn shame. Overclocking is supposed to help speed things by a lot. Dont get me wrong i appreciate their hard work, but the hardware just cant handle the OS correctly.

Whoa, I have the same question! I was looking at buying a G1, since I have simple needs and I enjoy annoying people who technolust over the newer phones.
But if it struggles during those simple needs (ordinary phone stuff and youtube quality video) then I guess I'll wait.

I dont use mobile youtube, but it can do stuff like call, text, web just fine...The froyo browser seems kind of jerky on the G1 for me. your better off getting a Galaxy S/Vibrant/Fas/Epic or the G2.

I have a plain vanilla g1. I have used text messaging a lot, make very few calls (just not that into talking on the phone) internet browsing mostly, google navigation, picture taking, reading e-books, etc. I would say it is an ok phone for those things, however, that said, I am definitely looking to see what comes out this fall. I have been reading about a lot of the cool things android can do past the 2.0 barrier and want to upgrade for those reasons. If you are considering the g1 and do not mind that the community has gone beyond the hardware, and are not all that interested in apps, it is a good solid workhorse. If you are app envious, wait. Just tossing in my .02 from someone who does not root and rom. Hope this helps your decision.

The only reason I can stand using the G1 is because I have an iPhone 3GS as my main phone. My G1 is just to mess around with Android. Works great for that.
Don't get the G1 if you want a new phone though. Wait for the G2. It looks awesome.

I agree. Don't get a G1. It is definitely showing its age.

htc hero worth the cash?

hey,
I'm currently using lg eve and i'm really interested by htc sense UI and I was wondering is it worth buying since the processor is only 528 MHz plus is the multi touch on the hero similar to the iphone?
-someone might have asked this same question i couldn't find it-(lazy)
lol, i wouldnt have the nexus one ( 1 Ghz) if i could. I love the hero so much, its perfect haha. well, with an update coming in mid february, it will hopefully be perfect;p
id say go for it
and it has capacitive touch screen, so its basically the same sensitivity as the ipodtouch/iphone.
and in browser, 2 finger pinch to zoom, is "almost" as smooth as in the iphone...
if your deciding between iphone/hero... go with the hero, multitasking pwns
No you should get the HTC Legend which is the 2nd gen hero
You can find it here
http://pdadb.net/
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=2123&c=htc_legend
Absolutely!
Paid fourhundred euros for my first one which I lost The next day I bought another one for 350.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5392845#post5392845
The sense UI doesn't work for me. I don't need 7 homescreens and it slows my phone down. Pleeaase don't compare it to the iPawn. they're two completely different things. but I should tell you that multitouch is enabled by HTC it soesn't work natively in android 1.5, it only works in the browser and in albums
edit: but after the update to 2.0 it will support multitouch!
in my opinion, no its not worth the money i paid, however i have bought one, and will keep it for a while.
you'd be far better off getting a G1 and flashing it to the latest 2.1 rom.

The G1 is indeed a very nice device my father owns one, I find it a little bit too big, but the sliding keyboard is very, very nice!!
I bought mine, I have to say this phone is awesome! You won't regret it after purchasing it.

well, guys I'm getting the hero tomorrow and thanks for the replies, it really made a difference
I love my hero too... it the best phone i ever had!!

Every time we get a new phone, it is an upgrade.
so each time.. it would be for a better phone.
so.. would we not love each new phone.. THE BEST!
lol

before i used to think htc sense made windows mobile more friendly, but after seeing htc sense on android it was mind blowing, its like best of both worlds

No One To Share Joy With But XDA...

It's crazy. The phone is great, it's what I've wanted for years. I got it just today and besides having to get used to the on-screen keyboard I must say it is the best phone I have ever used.
The Rhodium, in retrospect, was a clunky machine, and one of the best windows had to offer. This late in the game though, just an antiquated OS. I am so happy to be done with a Windows.
Why the thread?
Do you, geeks that we are, find no one in your immediate circle who understands?
I got home and am soooo satisfied win my decision, no longer having to tinker and be OCD, I know, not very geeky. Just I think I have been spending a bit to much time modifying and not enjoying my phone. I also didn't want be in he hands of Steve and the fruit phone.
Any similar stories...
Mine stopped vibrating after 5 seconds, apart from that great phone.
Quick tip: Setup haptic feedback on the keyboard if you haven't already. It truly makes a touchscreen keyboard 5x easier to use/learn.
I'm basing my opinion on haptic with the N1 vs. non-haptic w/ my iTouch. It's nice to have "something" that tells you that you just pressed something.
Also, learn to use the auto-correct. Especially holding down new words/names that it normally "tries" to auto-correct. (Such as "app(s), Haha, and various others that the phone tries to correct to really odd words) (Haha, will default to BAHAMAS!!!... WTF?)
Just thought I'd try to be useful
I know exactly what you mean... I got a TyTN II and the first thing I did was flash a custom ROM so it would actually be useable... then, after about 6 months, I found out I could run Android on it... really well! After a couple months of looking at it, I finally took the plunge to see what Android was all about, not thinking I would be blown away, especially considering I was running it on a WM device.
What did I discover? Android ran better on my Kaiser than WM did! I was hooked, and a couple months later got myself a G1 to replace the Kaiser... The G1 still had some issues, IMO, in terms of speed and found myself still flashing customer ROMs, but it wasn't out of total neccesity at least.. and now, I have a Nexus One, which is hands down the best phone I have ever experienced! I don't even feel like it is needed to put a custom ROM on it, I have and will again, but the stock experience is more than fulfilling!
Mate, I get the exact same feeling.. No one really "gets" me when it comes to this phone.
It's just a phone they say, what does it do that your HTC Diamond doesn't? Seriously.. the only thing I can come up with, is it has a flash.. But we know it's so much more than that, don't we?
I've already been told by a few people; "oh don't buy googles first phone, it'll have lots of bugs, you should wait till the second release." Little do they know nor understand.
First moment I got my Diamond I flashed it because it had too much carrier crap on it. Who wants everything to be customized by someone else.. Seriously..
*Eagerly awaiting my new shiny phone*
I was quite surprised by no real bugs to be seen or heard of myself. I was wary of the purchase, but easily the best one I ever decided upon.
I'm still trying to see if the great developer folks figure out a re-lock... But every day I'm considering rooting... Ugh!
I can connect to my home PC (Edit: from anywhere with 3G) and mouse and keyboard around on it using the Remote RDP program for Android. I find this impresses people fairly well.
I'm fine with using Gmote for free to pull any music/video to my phone... Still haven't hopped onto the paid apps bandwagon yet. Still working my way through the free apps, to get a grasp on what I like, and don't like.
But, it would be nice to have even more control remotely. I'm just staying in minimal-mode for a bit.
I'm surrounded by iPhone and BB users, most of which are completely, utterly technologically illiterate--I'm talking about people who don't even understand processor speeds/RAM size, so they can't even appreciate how fast the Snapdragon is. People who aren't users of either want one. "Android" is like Greek to them.
I do know a few geeky people, but they're rare around here. :/

I did the exact same thing man. I had the first gen iPhone for about a month, hated it. Then got the AT&T tilt, and flashed a custom rom on it. I worked at T-Mobile, and my co-workers would say, I should just go work for at&t lol, then I finally got the G1 a week before launch and fell in love with android. Its the best OS I could have asked for and knew it would be a winner. Then up until 2 days ago, I finally received the nexus one and WOW, it is so much faster, i'm still shocked. I haven't rooted or installed a new rom because I don't think it needs it. It runs great stock. Awesome phone, that I think only us xda nerds know how to appreciate. It really a great device upgrade for those of us who had stuck with the G1 for so long.
Nice feedback
I made a thread saying why I moved in the Rhodium forum and should have known better. I just wanted to share. They are letting me have it.
But it is so true, this device is a great medium. Customizable, elegant, powerful, what more could we ask for(lets further he Convo)?
Glad you guys love it. I'm looking forward to getting one for my wifey while I get the HD2.
Well then she can hang with the best and you can hang with the rest

What other "Keyboard" Android is good? Cliq Worth it?

Hey all, Posting here since STILL to this day, I have not seen ANYTHING "debunk" my G1 (With Enoms 1.6 rom) Had my G1 since it came out and STILL love and praise it.
However been wondering about the Cliq, I know it "can" be rooted. I know "The Dude" has one out there. However, honestly said, I do not know if the Cliq can 1: Be without the Moto Blur software and 2: Is it better, faster then my G1 with the mods?
Basically the only thing I like about the Cliq is the Dpad. (Emulators ftw!)
I trust this section of the forum since Im all about G1 mostly and just checking if anything is just as good. (And that isnt all touch screen, Nexus is nice.. but fail its all touch)
If anyone has some insight for me? Thanks. =)
I do not think we are the "right" people to ask, perhaps swing over to the Cliq section forum?(If there is one, always skip down here xP)

Otherwise the more evolved version of the cliq where Motorola once again showed how... "wonderful" they make keyboards. If you want the best keyboard in an Android phone, the G1. However, the Nexus is a VERY good phone with a large enough screen to where you're faster on the Vk than you are on an actual keyboard.
I got the cliq, i personally dont have a need to root because its got plenty of ram and rom (formerly used apps2sd and swap on my htc's). Its got better reception, battery and camera over the g1 but the keyboard is kinda "meh", cramped and weird. Im still trying to get used to it. Blur has some nice features, i dont use all the social crap thats in it but i like the theme colors and some apps pre installed are nice.
I suggest you go in a tmobile store and play it one for about 15 mins. I got one only because i was getting board with my mytouch. Im not disapointed at all for getting the cliq, i like it , and cant wait till the 2.1 update rolls out yet.
Oh thats just it, Ive played with one, but not one thats been rooted.
Since I DO have T-Mobile. The Droid looks cool. but fail on that the D pad is on the right.. sigh.
And yea, I do ask here cause I have a G1 and I figure anyone else here who knows what a rooted G1 could do, would know or tell me if they switched to something better. =) (Or if they kept the G1 and still love it more like im starting to suspect is me)
Nexus vk is ok.. but I just liked the idea of a real keyboard more. But Im willing to discuss it if you have some good points to it. =)
Honestly, I hate the vk on the nexus. I don't know why, I just do. Some vks are great it's just the nexus is bleh for some reason imo.
I'm good enough at typing on my G1 that most of the time I can type without looking constantly at the keyboard. Try to do that on a virtual keyboard. There are many times when you need to "feel" the keys and know where they are. I tried my friends cliq at school earlier for a few minutes, and I was not impressed. It was real laggy, switching between screens or opening the app drawer was slow. He did have all the motoblur widgets on though.
Anyone know if the Dpad on it is good for emulators? The Cliq.
My personal opinion would be to stay away from the Moto Cliq and just sit tight for future Tmobile Android launches in 2010. It will be a good year for their handset lineup.
Now speaking on terms of reliability I can say it is not uncommon for people to have screen responsiveness issues as well as freezing problems. Could be the hands the phone was in too but still.
I'm sure in the hands of a techy the phone would be fine (since you'd know what and how to fix any issues for the most part).
The camera is by far better hahaha. Thats about my favorite thing lol.

Its not bad, the emulators run pretty smooth on it. I feel the dpad is kinda big, it would help if it was a bit smaller, but for what is currently availible at the moment its probably the best until true multi-touch is availible. I wouldnt recommend using your upgrade credit on it,dont waste it on a motorola. I got mine from craigslist. The worst thing about this phone is the customer support blows hardcore. I got the faulty upgrade and im stuck with broken Gapps and the clock problem, im afraid to root it now I dont want to "briq my cliq"
I take everything back about what I said about the cliq, the experiance was bad enough to leave T mobile, Motorola is straight up junk. I should have known better. I will never use their products again. I got the Samsung Moment now, something tells me I should have grabbed the hero instead.
Heh well I went with the HD2 =) Cause Since the TP2 can get Android.. only matter of time till HD2 has it. Then Ill have best of WM and Android. =D And yea.. you shouldve got the Hiro.. HTC > Samsung
swype
I personally use this from time to time even though I have a physical keybord. So thhose who are looking for a vk.swype is real good once you get used to it. Go to the site for tips on using it. As far as physical keyboards go I thing by far the g1 is the best among android phones. Right now I'm waiting on the experia x10 mini and see how that keyboard works

Need some G1 motivation!

Hey guys i need some motivation here.
Im really starting to hate my G1, there really is nothing wrong with it, i just feel like im living in the stone age. Im stuck running 1.6 roms in general because they are the only ones that seem to work 100% and are actually fast and meet my standards.
However these days 1.6 is ancient technology, and the G1 cant seem to handle any improvement, anytime i try an eclair rom its slow as hell and has the lack of drivers so its all hackjobs trying to get everything to work right, the hardware is EXTREMELY outdated, even though its only a year+ old things have progressed massively since then.
It wouldnt suprise me if they discontinue the G1 in favor of the new Mytouch Slide as that would seem to be the natural progression of things, so then i was looking the other day at Verizon and here they are with the Droid Incredible with a spec sheet made of gold
Why should i keep my G1, honestly? Its crippled to 1.6 based roms if you want 100% full functionality, and if you want anything more then that you rely on hackjobs to get everything running right and sacrifice a good amount of speed, when you can just go buy a new phone that comes 100% out of the box with a 2.1 rom and it will run it great all day long with no issues and everything working.
What happens after 2.1? What happens when 2.2 or 2.4 or whatever comes after that?? Our G1s can barely handle 2.01 much less anything that may come after eclair, im just looking at my G1 like an ancient relic with outdated hardware and need some advice, to keep or to leave.
The G1 is an older phone with hardware that was decent when it was released, but has been surpassed by newer technology. That's all there is to it. It's still a good, fun phone.
You have to think of it as you think of any other technology though. Buy a high end computer and in a year it's equivalent to the lowest of the low. If you bought a Mustang GT a year ago, you'd probably be disappointed to see that it's similar to the new V6 Mustang's. The same goes with ALL phones. You should be glad that the phone's still getting love from developers and nearly all apps and games are compatible with it.
I don't need 2.0/2.1 or any future updates to keep me content with the phone. If I start hating it or feel an extreme need for something better by the time my upgrade comes around, I'm most likely going for another Android device. Maybe you should too if you're just not feeling the G1 anymore.
Super D is the fastest ROM I've used on the G1, by far. it's fast enough for my uses. If it's too slow for you, you need to upgrade. Me, I'm sticking with the G1 for a while, because the Nexus is too expensive, and nothing else appeals to me. Except an iPhone running Android ... but that one's still in progress ...
cyan has a 2.1 rom with hardware acceleration just around the corner. how does multiple google accounts, live wallpapers, fully working drivers and the usual cyan tweaks sound?

He mentioned it on twitter...
If all you want is a fast, mainstream phone ... get an iphone. The G1 is pure freedom from all the BS youll deal with using something else.
If you're at the point where you need someone else to convince you to stick with the G1, well, i think you have your answer already.
meh.
I have a G1 with a 1.6 rom that has Eclair bits in it. Maybe that's how you need to look at it: what parts of 2.1 is really important for you? Multitouch on browser, maps? Plenty of 1.6 roms have it. I personally have no problems staying with 1.6 since all the necessary items from 2.1 is already ported to the rom, so I'm not really missing out on all the good stuff.
The CSDI roms in all honesty have been very fast and stable. I know I'll keep my G1 for at least another year until Tmo gets some decent phones (N1 is nice, but I'm holding out.) When 2.2 comes out I'm sure the devs will port bits and pieces to the G1 and keeps us G1 owners happy.
If you're truly not liking it anymore, then I would go and get a different phone. There's nothing wrong with that.
You should keep the G1 because it is honestly the best overall device that I have used that has a keyboard. I switched from the G1 to the N1 and then to a BlackBerry because I realized how much I needed a keyboard for typing emails and whatnot. The G1 seems to offer everything that I wanted: Android, keyboard, touchscreen, and most of all, customization. The only major downside to the G1 for me was the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack. I would say the successor to the G1 would be the Droid, but it's not a GSM phone so I can't really use it.

I know... but last I checked the Milestone doesn't work on 3G for my carrier, but I'm not sure on that.

Hero was a mistake I regret

So basically I'm phone-savvy and all (maybe not at as much as the devs here) and bought the HTC Hero around 6 months ago.
I made a big mistake.
First of all, I'm on T Mobile US and I got the unlocked European version and though I knew 3G wouldn't work I just said "who cares" but now I realize that 3G is actually quite a big jump from the slow EDGE.
Second, I'm not quite satisfied with the HTC-ized Android. And plus we still haven't gotten a 2.1 update.
Third, it just doesn't feel that good of a phone as do several others.
Sure it can do just about everything, but hell even the iPhone is simpler to use and easier. By simplicity I'm talking about the time it takes to achieve a task which is on average longer on my HTC Hero (at least for me).
Now the 2.1 update has been pushed back further and I'm very disappointed with HTC. All in all I think I'm going to trade in my phone for something else, maybe a blackberry or an iphone or just sell it and wait for something else.
I don't want to start a flame war, and I'm glad those of you who are satisfied with the HTC Hero have a phone you enjoy... but for me, I guess it's over.
I'd also like to thank all the developers who worked so hard to make my Hero that much more usable and interesting. Thanks guys!
I have to disagree. I have been working in the wireless industry since 1999 and also consider myself to be phone savvy. I've been using smartphones since the Motorola MPx200! The Hero is HANDS DOWN one of the BEST phones I've ever had. I'm using mine in the US on AT&T (Telus Hero, so 3G works). I don't think it is slow at all. If you don't like the HTC "stuff", load a Vanilla ROM. I had a Magic before my Hero and only had EDGE on the Magic, so I can see where that would bother you. But that's not because it's a Hero, but rather because you are using it on the wrong network. When the official 2.1 comes out and the devs have access to the proper kernel, these phones are going to fly! It's a pity you can't get 3G on it, because I think you would have a much better opinion of the phone.

Well, not really.
You should have known a smartphone relies on a decent data connection. Downloading one or two emails and updating the weather app is about as much as I can take on GPRS/EDGE.
You aren't satisfied with the Sense UI? Did you even watch any online videos before you bought the phone? Surely you didn't just walk in to a purchase like this blind. The 2.1 update is going to be Sense UI too so why are you holding out for it? Why don't you just put a vanilla 2.1 ROM on your Hero and have it now without Sense?
eatmydave, speed really isn't the issue. My Hero is running perfectly fine, and as for data I'm mostly on a WiFi which is why I got the Hero from Europe and back then the Telus Hero wasn't out. Personal opinion, I just didn't have a satisfactory experience with the phone. I'm not bashing on the phone at all It's great and a lot of people love it... just not me.
kadison, getting defensive much? Yes, really. Read the above section. I knew that I'd only have EDGE and sure I didn't think it would be that slow but I'm on wifi most of the times anyway.
And of course I saw videos before buying the phone I'm not bashing on the Sense UI, all I'm saying is that it's more eye candy than it is useful. At least for me.
Custom ROMs were the only reason I put up with it for so long anyway. But in the end, this phone just isn't for me.
The reason I posted this was to possibly warn future buyers who are like me. Sure a lot of other people love this phone, but a few are dissatisfied.
Oh yeah, no one would really want to buy the Hero now since they have the Legend or whatever out. HTC is just using their marketing techniques (pushing 2.1 further and further back) so some people give in and buy their new hand sets.

Even I do disagree.
HTC Hero is a great phone. Its proved that It can handle 2.1 ver well including 3D Gallery n Live wallpapers. Its just missing the 2.1 Update from HTC. But not doing that might make HTC to loose some customers.

First of all, I'm on T Mobile US and I got the unlocked European version and though I knew 3G wouldn't work I just said "who cares" but now I realize that 3G is actually quite a big jump from the slow EDGE.

I run on edge most of them, and for day to day usage, you wouldn't notice much difference with Edge vs 3g vs HSDPA. The web is a bit slower, but I use opera mini so pages are small.

Second, I'm not quite satisfied with the HTC-ized Android. And plus we still haven't gotten a 2.1 update.
Third, it just doesn't feel that good of a phone as do several others.

The lack of 2.1 is annoying, but give Villain a whirl. I'm running 5.3 it's the first time I'm happy with a 2.1 rom. I had been running the Mr Bang performance rom for a few months previous as I felt it was the best 1.5 rom.
I to got the urge to move to something else, but there will be bigger upgrades around the corner.

No, I'm not being defensive. EDGE is crap and on average you get less than the speed of a 56K modem. The times I find I really need a decent data connection is when I am not near any WiFi, say if i'm lost somewhere or need to find a nearby business or shop. Doing this on EDGE is a real ball ache and if I knew that's all I'd ever have I'd reconsider my phone/network choice.
Sense ties the OS together visually but I wouldn't call it eye candy because IMO Android needs this. It also provides quite a few useful widgets and shortcuts, meaning you don't have to go hunting in the market as soon as you get your phone for something as basic seeing the weather, bookmarks or connectivity toggles on a home screen.
I agree no one who can afford a Legend or Desire would buy a Hero now. Furthermore the only reason to buy a Legend is because you have a soft spot for aluminium or can't cope with the physical size of a Desire - there's only a £15 price difference between the two phones on devicewire.com!
HTC are dragging their heels with the Hero's 2.1 update but it'll be here eventually.
It seems to me that despite what you said you did want to start a flame war. Why even post something like this? We are all on this forum because we love our Heros and want to get the most out of them. You've gotten 6 months of use out of a phone you wanted so much you imported it, there's no use complaining now about how it's not up to scratch. So what if 2.1 hasn't come through the official channels yet, this is an open source project and if you're relying on official roms, then I truly believe you are not realising the full potential of what your phone can really do.
Maybe you should just join the ranks of the drones conforming to consumer commercialism and buy an iphone
stop this!
Please, could somebody close this Thread???
I don't like (and prob many other people) this kind of discussing on this Forum from the Hero. there is a general discussion forum where you can talk about this, but in MY opinion, this forum is for people who definately like their HERO and want to use all of it's functionalities.....
If you don't like the phone, stop complaining, get the hell out of here, buy yourself an Iphone, and bugger off......sorry for being rude!
Thanks

You need to think about these two words 'discussing' and 'discussion' - oh look, well I never, you used those two words in your comment.
Think about what those words mean, and then, the answer to your upset will be found

This is a valid topic imho, if he doesnt like his product which he has bought with his hard earned money, this is his prerogativ.
Nobody had to respond to his post, people could just let it die, but people keep posting, therefore, its a valid topic.
If i had known about HTC's unfriendly update/customer policy, i wouldnt have bought it either.

I sat here for far too long constructing a long scathing reply but I decided i'm not going to waste any more of my time on it! So:
OP - If you really hate your Hero so much that's your choice. You have a right to your opinion and the world would be a dull place if everyone liked the same thing.
Pietje - Grow up.
Looking at the numbers in his handle, one has to assume he has a fair bit of that to do.
Yeah does seem like this has turned into more of an argument.
All I'm saying is that I, personally, didn't like the Hero. Never said anything about the Hero being bad or anything. It's all a matter of opinion. I have friends who love their Motorola Razrs and laugh when I tell them I paid 600 dollars for a phone, they just say "what's the point of using internet on your phone?" so yeah there are people like that also.
As a device Hero is definitely great. As something I would like/want/need/use, it's not. Just not for me.
I'd appreciate it if people didn't try to argue their points here, I'm not disagreeing with anyone.
Cheers!

I never understood the appeal of those phones!
Well I have to completely disagree with you I got my Hero in April and I love it I am running Kimera's overclocked ROM so I basically have a Legend and my Hero does do everything I love to show off with it and everyone thinks its so cool and its so fun to just play with and i absolutely HATE Apple
@MentalDeath - Agree on all accounts. Especially the Kimera ROM.
why did you not just get a htc magic (mytouch 3g) its same specs as hero bar the camera and would work on T-Mobile with 3g

does this work?
In the hidden test menu, under phone information(*#*#4636#*#*), it's possible to select cdma as network. Would some of those settings enable 3g, for european heros in the states ?
