HD mini ROM upgrade (for South East Asia) - HD Mini General

HTC issued an upgrade today. I think this is what you guys have been waiting for. Check it out. I'm downloading it now.
ROM Upgrade for HTC HD mini
Release Date: 2010-07-08
ROM Version:1.36.707.3

Thank you very much , what the difference from old version?

thanxxx...
thanx for notifying...

Officially, these are the improvements:
1. The trimmer bar will slide smoothly while trimming the mp3.
2. Enhance the system performance and stability.
3. Improves the ringtone sound quality.
For me, only #2 and #3 are important.
I've just finished flashing the phone. Have to wait for start up and bring all my personal setup and data back to the phone.
Then i'll give it a test run to check for any noticeable improvements.
From the outset, HD mini seems to run smoothly already before the upgrade. Although i have some basic complaints about the new os and/or htc custom software.
1. Calendar from the Manila tabs is seriously crippled. When you slide to the Calendar tab, or jump to it from the Home link, it takes half a minute before the week's schedule comes up. Unlike the old WinMo 6.1 calendar or old 3rd party calendars that jumps right up without any delays. Secondly, there's no way to make duplicates of schedules. For example, i have a "corporate meeting" scheduled for today. After the day is done, another one was set for the following week. Normally, i'd just copy from today, and then paste into 7-days after. But that's impossible to do in Manila Calendar. I'd have to resort back to the WinMo Calendar, which thankfully is still lay hidden in the sub-menus, to do this very basic task. Third, it's fixed to show 7-days schedules only. Can't add more days to it. I hope HTC will take a look at this serious draw back for the otherwise wonderful phone. (This disability will frustrate business folks.)
2. Text Messaging is eye-candy. Which is good. Except, there's a huge trade off. First, the Text tab shows only last 25 messages, and not intuitive at all. It's shown in the ancient per message style. No threading. Although, you can click All Messages to go into the threaded format. Which brings us to the second biggest problem. It's extremely slow. You click on a person, and the messages will build up slowly, taking several seconds to come up one by one, depending on the volume of the conversation with that person. Third, and the worst worst part??? The old trusty speedy WinMo's own versatile text messaging app was killed off. So you're left with no alternative.
3. Contacts/People app is also seriously crippled. This used to be WinMo's ugly but super versatile function. The very attraction that draws people to WinMo. New Contacts app is either broken or buggy. You can't use cut/copy/paste functions in most of the fields, except the very basic ones. As an example, you can do the cut/copy/paste with Mobile Number, but not the rest of it, ie. Car Number, Radio Number, Home Number, etc. So it's very choosy. Of course, if you dig deeper, you're thrown back to WinMo's own Contacts app. Saved the day? No way. It's the opposite. The new weird looking WinMo Contacts do not allow any cut/copy/paste at all, except for the Notes section. I wonder why do they have to axe this very useful core functionality. But the nightmare doesn't end there. If you change a tiny thing in a particular Contact field, saving it will take ages. Basically freezing up the phone for maybe a minute or so. Most people would have probably pried open the back cover and took out the battery. (Because mini doesn't have reset button.) It really looks like the whole phone has crashed. Until, if you're patient enough to wait, and realize it's just super slow to save an editted Contact.
Apart from these 3 nuisances. The rest of the phone works wonderfully.
So, for now, i can only resort to Outlook editting on my netbook, whenever i need to work on the contacts and schedules. Then sync.
But this means, i can't do these basic stuffs real time, as needed, whenever needed. I'll have to remember all the changes of contacts and schedules for the day. And then do my homework when i get home. It doesn't happen everyday. But still a big drawback. Information tends to get lost along the way.

New ROM brings more stability to text messaging. Still super slow, but error free now. Possibly no more bugs, or eliminated to the minimum.
I got around 2000 text messages and more than 1600 contacts in my phone. Probably the reason making the Messaging and Contacts app super slow. (In HD mini, all of them are linked. Updating something in a contact will be updated all across the whole ecosystem.)
But i had more than 20,000 messages and same number of contacts in my old trusty Asus P750 WinMo 6.1 phone. And there was no slow down in either Messaging or Contacts apps. Not even editting and filling up tons of data in the notes field of a contact can put a dent to it. The Calendar app was also fast. Both WinMo's own and third party apps.

I'm back again for more observations on the new ROM update.
Thankfully, HTC brought back the "Snooze to X mins/hours/days" options whenever a schedule reminder pops up. Really wonderful. I love this.
Thank you HTC, for solving one of my major gripes on HD mini.
I hope HTC can take a look at my other gripes (see above, plus a slight problem with excel), and incorporate solutions for the next update.
Another thank you note for HTC is that, my first unit, which seem to hang a lot, was quickly replaced with a brand new unit. Not much questions asked. Now, that's quality product coupled with quality service. Very good. No wonder HTC is rising so quickly.

just updated it yesterday from the HongKong HTC website(ROM Version:1.36.721.3), i guess it's the same as the one mentioned in this post.
Infact i haven't noticed any special change or improvement after upgrading my hd mini, the sliding between different different tabs seems to be smoother, but still it'll be lagged when moving from the home screen to 9-tabs screen.
Like bart3385 said, the "Snooze to X mins/hours/days" options makes the schedule more friendly and logical(so that i won't miss up any of the coming event).
But there're still some things need to be fixed.
1.G-sensor seems to be too much sensitive= =(not that sensitive in the previous rom. Not a big problem if u aren't interested in teeter)
2.Chinese font is still terrible(when compare to the Hong Kong CHT rom), not easy to read as there's no antialiasing when the chinese character is small.(still not a problem for those who dun read/type chinese)
3.Scanty ram!!!Need to keep killing tasks.

To prepare for the upgrade, I understand that the personal data should be backed up first. That itself isn't an issue for my friend cos her data is sync'd to outlook exchange, and SMSes can be backed up via microsoft myphone.
What about programs eg bsbtweak and other apps that I installed on her phone.. Do these need to be reinstalled? If that's the case I need to bring the various cab files along as well, when I begin the labourious task of upgrading the ROM!
What she really needs is a way to desensitise the touchscreen. She finds it too sensitive

Any Asian serial number can download the ROM upgrade. HTC is just making sure you don't use this on European units, which the ROM is not intended for. In other words, avoiding mismatch.
Although i have no idea what will happen if you install an Asian ROM in a European unit. Aside from losing all the European languages. Will it work?

I have error "incorrect vender" when I install the Asian ROM in my European unit. Any solution?

I guess that answers my question. Apparently, the ROM has to match the country of the device it is intended for.
Have you tried downloading a European latest ROM from HTC site, and flashing it to your unit?

Everything will be lost when you upgrade ROM. Including apps, configurations, data, messages, etc.
You'll have to reinstall all the apps all over again.
You can use Jeyo Mobile Companion to back up your SMS instead of MyPhone. Backup to the XML format, so that you can restore all of them back to your phone. You can also backup and restore your call logs.
I always feel safer to backup things to my pc, instead of the internet.

I really start to doubt my topaz: text-messaging fails

Hello folks,
I have my topaz for about 2 months now and tried different roms, apps, settings. The reason I bought is was because I found the android interface unattractive, I don't like it. Also I didn't like the iPhone, comparing Sense on wvga next to iPhone; well it pisses the iPhone away in my opinion and it is too expensive for what you get.
I really like Sense 2.5 and windows mobile combination. For me it's sense 2.5 or nothing. I'm a PC fan and i like the way everything synchronizes, the way i can explore the phone and all the modifications possible provided through this forum.
But the one thing that sets me off is the HTC messaging (like always) which is slow and still, i like the windows mobile messaging better. Now either way, I have this problem with the phone that doesn't seem to get solved no matter which rom I use, no matter if it's HTC messaging or windows messaging...
I don't receive many text messages that are sent to me
My GF has sent me 6 text messages all over the day for which she received a delivery notification and I got plain nothing. It happens all the time the last 2 months, beginning from stock rom and radio to the latest topaz sense 2.5 rom and radio.. then I need to explain i wasn't being ignorant but my 360€ cellphone just doesn't show them.. yeaaaa sure. The thing is; when I press All Messages sometimes nothing happens, thats the point where I think "not again" because then the messaging application failed again and god knows for how long it has already been freezing and how many messages I missed.
I'm a heavy texter and texting is just the one thing I want to do..
I'm thinking of selling this thing which I think is too expensive, and going to an android device.
Does someone else experience these problems too?
Mmmm...
I can't see that this has anything to do with which ROM you use. Most of the ROM's here don't come with radios anyway, so you'll need to flash that seperately. It sounds more like a network carrier issue to me. You could try contacting your provider for support and see what they say. Or try a few different radios - there are a number of revisions in this forum.
I've never had a text message issue at all, so I can't really suggest anything else. What carrier are you with?
It's ever since i have this device, already have a new sim which didn't solve anything. I'm with Mobistar. I don't have it with my spare samsung....
While I don't have problems receiving messages, my messaging is also really buggy and takes forever to load and send. I just deleted all my messages and that seemed to solve the problem. You mentioned you are a heavy texter so maybe all the messages are causing your messanger to freeze and lose texts.

Brand New to WinMo, attempting to figure out Omnia 2

I got my Omnia 2 back in March. I am a very beginning user, meaning I do not know how to use roms and cooking and registry editors etc... I was hoping I could get a step by step guide to changing my theme. (if that is what it is called) I would like it to be more intuitive, like the iphone or android. I am also uncomfortable using a registry editor, I do not know what I am doing.
I have been able (with this board and others help) to unlock the GPS, and how to tether the phone to my laptop without using verizon's software.
My main problems:
-the phone is slow, I think because the 10 apps I have installed are all on my device and not in my storage, I have tried to remedy that by installing directly to my storage, but it often doesn't work.
-sometimes after a phone call it shuts down or goes black and I have to take out the battery to turn it back on
-I also can't see the screen in sunlight
-my email isn't being sent out from my hotmail account
I have searched for solutions to these problems, but to no avail. (at least for beginners like me)
Verizon Wireless Samsung Omnia 2 S:i920
Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional
What other information is needed?
Thank you so much for your help! I will gladly donate to a developers project if I can get some support. (so I don't have to go buy a new phone!)
I've tried answering some of you questions below. hope it helps.

Try the task manager to close any programs running in the background. That usually slows mine down.

Mine too. Join the club. Not a big deal as it will get your phone running faster again!
-I also can't see the screen in sunlight
Have you gone into your settings and adjusted your backlight settings? Might help.
-my email isn't being sent out from my hotmail account
Go into your options in your hotmail account on the phone and you should be able to set up hotmail to be pushed immediately to your phone. you might have yours set to manual.

Thank you for your suggestions
I have the setting to shut down programs when I press the x in the corner, so no programs are running.
Yours shuts down too? I think it is ridiculous! You pay $200 some dollars for a phone and have to take the battery out b/c it freezes? It is getting pretty annoying, especially when I have to make back to back phone calls or am trying to get a couple things done.
I was able to adjust the lightness settings, so the screen is bright all the time instead of being dull. I haven't had a chance to test it in sunlight yet. (It's been raining here, and I work in an office)
I do have my email pushed to my phone, but I just can't send anything out. I tried adjusting the settings, and even deleted the email account and then added it again. I'm not sure what else to do.
Again, I really appreciate you trying to help. I didn't think that getting a smart phone would require so much work and research to get it to act like I want it, which is nice easy push button intuitive. Instead, everything is so complicated!
Pushing the X button doesn't necessarily shut down the program, it may simply minimize it. That's why I suggested using the task manager to ensure that all programs are properly closed. I would have thought that windows would have figured out task management by now, but that's why they have the task manager built in. The phone will lock up only when it runs low on main memory which is likely due to too many programs running in the background. With a regular check of my running programs I find that my phone may lock up only once a week at worst.
regarding your Hotmail, do you have the box "send immediatley" checked? Otherwise you need to tap send/receive to send.
As for the screen brightness, I find mine hard to see in direct sunlight but it's mainly due to the shiny screen protector that's on my screen
The phone is a bit daunting to start off with and I have run WM2003, WM5, WM6, WM6.1 and now this Samsung with WM6.5. be patient as this phone can do alot and the best part is, if you invest the time into it, you can customize your phone to the way you like it, not some arbitrary user interface like some of the others. BTW.... stop reading about flashing the ROM and editing the registry for now. Just play with your settings and the settings of each program to get them working the way you want them to. If you are going to start cooking, I'd like chocolate chip cookies please!
AND back it up before you go too far so that if you screw it up badly, you have a back up to go back to.
.
I will start using the task manager from now on.
I do have the send immediately box checked.
I'm trying to be patient lol, but i gotta have it now! Like I said before I have had the phone since March, but have been unable to do a lot of customizing. I am not sure about downloading themes, b/c I don't understand what a lot of them are.
Is there a place just to download themes?
Downloading themes means that you are changing the user interface of the phone iteself. first you need to decide which User interface program you want to use, download and install the trial, then search for a theme you like and download and install that as well. Guess what.... more customizing! Are you not happy with the Samsung Today interface that comes with the phone? or are you looking for a completely different experience?
Themes are like wall paper for the user interface program.... eye candy. Every user interface is about showing you pertinent information at a glance on the screen without the need to go digging into apps for that info. different user interfaces will also require differing levels of customization based upon which programs you have already loaded onto you phone and how you want the user interface (UI) to interact with those programs. This level of customization can be easy or hard depending upon the UI, so be prepared for more playing around. Add different themes which will then require more customizing as a theme is esssentially a customization of the UI. Differing UIs will also chane how you access programs, how you can group shortcuts to your liking, and the general experience of interacting with your phone.
Windows Mobile is definitely NOT a iphone experience, where how you interact is dictated by the manufacturer. Your phone allows for a huge amount of customizing to make your phone a truly unique experience.
As for your Hotmail acct, I'm not sure what else could be going on with it as it's really simple to set up and it sounds like you got it nailed. Is it connecting at all?
Another idea on your hotmail acct... have you tried sending yourself a test e-mail at work or at home? I know with mine there is never anything in my sent items on my phone and it might make you think nothing got sent.
Just an idea.....
i edited the power settings, so my screen is bright all the time and now i can sort of see it in the sun

I'd suggest to set it to "Auto"... that way it will be at 100% brightness in direct sunlight while keeping the backlight lower when it's not needed, resulting in a lower battery drain

Why my HD2 will be my last windows phone

Last November I ordered my new HD2 with excitment, finally an potential iphone killer was on the market. After weeks of reading reviews and watching youtube un-boxings I cancelled my order for the Touch HD and got the HD2 instead.
Initially i loved the phone but i have to say that i have grown to dislike it, due to software issues. Here are the reasons why
1. When I close and application I want the application to actually close, not hang around in the backgound making the phone sluggish and unusable. Skype and Goolge maps are the worst culprets for this. My T-Mobile Vario allowed me close application done by holding the 'X' for a few seconds. Why cant the HD2 / WinMi 6.5 have this feature.
2. When i want to reply to an SMS message, i want to start typing right away. If there are more than a couple of messages in the thread i dont want to have to sit an wait 5 minutes until it will allow text input.
3. Market place no longer works
4. When i put my username and password into the facebook app, ans select "save details" why can it not actually save the details. Did MS / HTC actually test this feature before the app was released.
5. I cannot select items in the facebook app as it was not designed for device without the D-Pad....lots of point it being on the HD2 them..
6. The youtube player complains about "storage full" at start up and then just close for no reason. Another useless app. other phone have no problem playing you tube video.
7. There is just not enough memory, take a few photos and a couple of video, thats it the phone is full. I had to mess around trying to figure out how to save things to the memory card by default. Why cant windows support more storage, Apple manage it!
8. Alarm Clock. You turn off the alarm and it still sounds at the set time, you change the time of the alarm and it still sound at the original time, even though thats not the time that sense tell you that it set to. Again did no one actually test this before shipping?
9. Windows Phone 7 looks aweful and is still the same old WinCE 5 with a different interface. Microsoft should have done something spectacular, instead they are shipping the same old pig in different lipstick. Why can't Microsoft not get mobile right?? Just a phone that works would be a great start. No wonder there are no so many HTC android devices.
Just my thoughts, please feel free to tell me that I am wrong.

Firstly, what ROM do you have?
What version of HD2 do you have? (TMobile US or other?)

This should work as you hope, does it keep all programs open? If not, maybe it is a program setting rather than Windows.
I have WKTask running on mine, so can't check, I would recommend this, but add the exclusion for the start menu if you decide to use it.
2. When i want to reply to an SMS message, i want to start typing right away. If there are more than a couple of messages in the thread i dont want to have to sit an wait 5 minutes until it will allow text input.

This may be due to lack of onboard storage, try looking for PMClean, it should give you an idea of whats using it up, and let you remove pretty much all temp files.

I'll admit there isn't much going for the onboard storage, but changing the photos/videos to storage card is a couple of taps...

Your wrong
1. I've had 10 apps running before and not had any slow down. You can set the registry to close apps on X, and it's probably a nice easy tick box in one of the many tweak apps.
2. I've got SMS conversations going back months and can type straight away.
3. Which one? MS Market place? Works fine for me.
4. Again, not a problem here with mine.
5. See 4.
6. Youtube works for me and others. Starting to think there's a problem with your phone, are you running the latest stock ROM?
7. Mine saves to the SD card by default.
8. My alarm works great, if I untick the box or unhighlight the day it won't sound, getting the feeling you're running a custom ROM.
9. WP7 is unfortunately not just a vaneer on top of WinCE 5.0, if it was our old apps would be compatible. It's based on the Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 kernal.
If you're running the latest stock ROM, then I'd suggest doing a hard reset (backup your data first!) and then see how it goes.
If you still have trouble then contact HTC and submit a warranty claim.

Wow, just wow. You've had the phone for 8 months and this is your first post? Definitely not a WinMo power user.
1. Many different task managers on here to choose from, including the htc default one, free for download. Might try searching.
2. Have you done any of the available updates for the phone? Besides complete ROM updates, there have been hotfixes for sms. I'm guessing you haven't taken the time.
3. WM Marketplace works, Omarket works, Handango works.
4. Facebook saves my login fine after every flash, not sure what your problem is. I'm guessing it has something to do with you not updating your phone.
5. ??? Never needed a dpad on this phone. Not sure what facebook app you are using.
6. Sounds like you need a memory cleaner. I would start with cleanRAM and clearTEMP. Once again, google is your friend. I'm guessing your youtube, album and internet caches have taken over all free memory. Might be time to clean house.
7. Did you try reading the manual? Or pressing that little sprocket looking thing when you open the camera to see what was inside?
8. Never had any problems with the alarm clock, so can't help you.

There's a reason that none of our current programs will be backwards compatible.
I hope you didn't pay full price for your HD2 because you have not come close to realizing its potential. Maybe an iphone is what you need?
Every one of the problems can be solved by using the 'search' button on this site.
I do agree that WinMo7 looks awful, but if microsoft are smart, they will leave it an open system like previous versions of WinMo. This would mean that some of the geniuses on here can make it an outstanding operating system.
This phone was designed for use with a removable microSD card, which is a whole load better than the fixed memory type (iPhone and HTC Diamond).
1. It's called multitasking and dont slow the phone down for me.
2. Not a problem with my Dutty CDLC v8 ROM.
3. Works fine for me.
4. and 5. I don't use Facebook because i actually got a life ;-)
6. Get a bigger SD card.
7. Get a bigger SC card to save stuff on, and that will also solve #6. Many users want it to save photos and videos internal as default.
8. Use S2U2 as lock app.
9. If you don't like Windows Phone 7 then don't use it.
I really think you crying. Try to go to bed a little early because it will sure help.
You can still close apps properly by holding the X. If you just tap x, is will stay in the background. If you press and hold, it will close properly.
My advice: Learn how the task manager works

Indeed, the OP obviously needs help, his phone is not behaving as it should, and he isn't aware of some of it's capabilities.
The last thing he needs is posts like erikvario's.
Be sure you always installs the hotfixes and latest ROM's.
And to close applications, then use Dutty's taskmanager.
Then you get a icon at the upper right corner, you tap it, and you see the list of running applications.

And yes you are dead wrong.

In all honesty you didn't give this phone the attention it deserves. I have only found success using windows after I put a good deal of thought into properly flashing a radio and a rom. The effort is worth it for me. My dual booting, over/underclocked HD2 is more capable than any Iphone.

After three days of Android - and still occasionally popping into WM for TomTom/book reader (still not found anything that beats AlReader2) I'm confident Android will be my next phone, despite not being a huge giving-Google-my-data fan. Wm6 is dead - and WM7 looks a (slight) mess (I'm already bored of the interface following a years-worth of screenshots), although I'm happy to change my mind when I eventaully get to play with one.
Hello Again Everyone,
First, Thanks to all the helpful people how have given me usuful tips and solutions. I will try an check some of them out and see what can be inproved. As it happens i checked market place and it actually connected 10 minutes ago for the first time in about 6 weeks.
As for all the people flaming me......no i've not gone away for a while
If i went out an bought a new car i would expet it to be working as normal 9 months down the line other wise i would be might unhappy.
The HD2 is my third WinMo phone and it the first one that frustrates me. The hardware and HTC sense are awesome it just niggly annoying things that should just work.
As for Apple, i would not own an Apple product if you payed me to take it away!!!
For interested in being help full, the phone has the HTC rom and not a network specific one. Rom version : 1.43.405.1 (70124) WWE
As for me giving the phone a bad name, I know my way around wondows mobile and if i have a problem i know where and what task manager is, i can close stuff. Where the phone get a bad name is from the lesser technical and informed people went out and bought the HT2. Propobly 90% of consumers of the handset as not techically minded and how no idea when is going on that making windows run slow. These are the people that will say that the phone is no good, with out actually knowing what they are talking about.
These are the people in the street who are seeing the issues with the phone and writting it off and migrating to handsets by companies named after frui,t because they "Just Work"
The phone should work, 99% percent perfectly, update for new features i can live with, but the feature on the phone should work. without me searching forum for answers.
Yeah to be fair I love my HT2, its like a girlfriend. Its great to have around, but it annoys the crap out me sometime

Hi,
1.43 is the original ROM, give this one a try:

Don't forget to back all your stuff up first (contacts, etc)

Just my thoughts, please feel free to tell me that I am wrong.

first of all, the following paragraph is not intended to flame you or anything such...just something i found odd...
you've started a new thread...its title suggests its another one of those "i hate my HD2 and never getting a WM phone again" threads...then you list all your problems...but no details!!! honestly, nearly ALL your problems are fixable! like you mentioned, nearly ALL of them are software problems! and you can tell they are fixable by the suggestions people are giving. i now see in your second post that you have finally mentioned some much needed information.
so, nearly all your problems are fixable...and you say you are familiar with WM...but you've just GOT to at least try a hard reset...better yet, try one of the newer official ROMs...they were released for a reason! the 1.43 ROM you're using is ANCIENT...its like complaining about an iphone4 that you're using with version 1 of the iOS. best suggestion from me is to try a custom/cooked ROM...they are da bomb!
1. almost all custom ROMs include one (or two...or even THREE) task managers. the energy ROM i am using includes "arkswitch" (tap top-left corner to bring up running applications list) and "ameba" (lets you configure and fine tune the behavior of the X button)
2. the energy ROM i am using completely does away with the HTC messaging client. if you have used WM phones before, you will find yourself more comfortable with the DEFAULT WM text messaging client. the energy ROM i am using integrates the DEFAULT WM text messaging client quite nicely. its speedy, to the point, and very much more compatible with backup programs like pimbackup and MS's myphone.
3. the MS market place app gets updated every now and then. still, a hard reset should get it going.
4. don't use facebook at all so can't help you there...but if it worked before, it truly sounds like a hard reset should get it going again.
5. don't use facebook at all so can't help you there.
6. this happened to me from time to time when i was using the stock ROM. never happened again on the energy ROM i am using. moreover, you can always install the official youtube app direct from google.
7. in EVERY WM phone i have owned, one of the FIRST things i did after booting up for the first time was to set the camera to store to the storage card...make a habit of it! apple is able to manage it because the iphone has BUILT IN storage (non-expandable! yuk!) so there is NOTHING to configure in the first place!
8. use G-Alarm! fantastic alarm application. search for version 1.5.1 which was the last FREE version. works fine on the HD2.
9. WM7 is truly many steps backward for the geeky users like us but it will probably allow MS to take many steps forward by attracting the non-power users currently being drawn to the iphone. as much as i hate the fact that MS seems to be abandoning the requirements of the power user, i take comfort in knowing that at least apple won't get the whole pie
to be honest since purchasing the hd2 a few months ago you realise this phone is not for everybody it does not work straight out the box like the iphone you have to spend some time to tweak/customise the phone to make it perform to its full potential personally i enjoying this aspect if it thats why i love the hd2..re the points you made i havent come across any of these and im confident they can be rectified

Dad's not happy

Hi there,
my dad sold his iPhone 3GS for a Samsung Galaxy S i9000. Coming from an iPhone, I first had to show him the amazing richness of possibilities you have on Android compared to an iPhone and after he overcame his old knowledge of "one button, one app", he was quite pleased with some of Androids merits. However, all in all, he's missing some important features he used to have on his iPhone and he has some problems:
A) Most important of all, pretty much a deal breaker if he can't get it fixed soon: SIP. We tried several different clients, and for example we even tried the latest (non-market) version of csipsimple and we found bug reports for the Galaxy S and adjusted the mic/speaker volumes accordingly but it's still really bad: For local calls the quality is reasonable. It's a bit stuttery at times but people can talk. It's much worse than on his iPhone though. But what's really annoying him is the fact that calls to foreign countries are a no-go. The added quality drop to long distance calls make it very hard for the other party to hear him (All over wifi btw). Please, does anyone know a sure-fix, exact-settings-listing for some SIP app for Android?
B) Also a very important thing to him is a calendar. But both the Samsung calendar as well as the original Android one don't have a good week-view. The original one doesn't have one, the Samsung one doesn't show titles on tasks. I find it ludicrous, it's just boxes without titles... Ideally, he wishes to have a week view similar to what I have on my N900:
Sorry, can't embed the image because I'm a new user:
h t t p ://login.icu.uzh.ch/~archer/Screenshot-20101116-182459.png
There's more but especially the SIP is really bugging him. He absolutely needs it to work reliably or he'll need to sell the device.
Thanks.

Agreed. Try Calendar Pad from the market in week view
What exactly is SIP? According to wiki, it's just a voice over internet protocol. Can you not use skype?
my wifi signal on 2.1 and 2.2 are the same. cellphones are not the same as laptop that has higher power to transmit data far away and and large space for antennas for receiving signal. if you look at wifi routers they got huge antennas. i don't think you can fit that in a phone.
i read a few months ago that iphone has problems on signal bcause of bad design : )
if you want software you've got a lot of choices in the market.
Try Sipdroid.

Um... Poor daddy? Sorry cheeky I know but sgs is for people who like to tinker and find cool mods even simple apps like the plethora of gre calendar apps he could use right now. Seasoned iphone users especially of the older generation often don't get, the nerdy thrill that we do with the customisations and work necessary to fully realise the potential of sgs and andriod in general

I use Sipdroid and VYKE as SIP provider. No echo, no cutting and only 30 seconds to set up. Can use WiFi or 3G. I do not use any PBXes.
the latest custom ROMs are really showing Pro
and performances are very quick
I'll recomend installing the DOC's ROM for SGS and use SipDroid for the voice chat
there are tons of Calendar options in the market, just take your time to review which one you like best

Try Egg 'n stone CalWidget. You can customice as You like. Size the Widget 4x1, 4x2, 4x3, 4x4......, choose a calander to view (MyCalendar, Google Calender.....), how long time ahead, layout and colors as You like, transparancy, and it's free.
I guess if Your father is a former iPhone user, he does not know how a widget work, try to explain to him.
Allright thanks everyone for the suggestions!
Dad's pleased with CalendarPad. Nice overview and the widget does a good job as well.
We installed sipdroid today and for local calls it seems to work well. Will check soon if we have the same problems as with csipsimple regarding long distance calls.
By the way... What is it with the "want an iphone, get an iphone" attitude in this forum. I clearly mentioned that he likes some of Android's merits and I asked two specific questions which I think I can expect from any modern smartphone, not just the iphone (working SIP and flexible calendar), the second of which btw is a downside of the iPhone because of all the sandboxing going on on an iphone. Anyway, you seem to be pretty quick on the "it's an iphone-loser" button.
Anyway, I've got a third and fourth question:
C) Is it normal that the battery lasts about 1.5 days with no IM or SIP services running? Only a calendar and the shipped-with weather widget. Is there some hack to improve battery life beyond just turning all the features off?
D) He's having serious stability issues at times. It happens that the device freezes when plugging it into USB or at different random times. At those times, the button lights would stay on with the screen being black. Long-pressing the power button fixes it. At different times it's a bit jerky. For example you would unlock the screen (gesture code) but then the screen would remain black for a few seconds and maybe the lock screen would show up again. Is this normal on android in general or has it to do with what Samsung pushed into its distro? Btw his mobile is branded by Orange and ships with some additional crap. Could this cause the problem? What's the easiest way of getting a fresh and simple Samsung or pure Android distro on it? I see there are lots of "mods", but I think we don't need any sort of mod, just a plain and stable OS.
Thanks.
To improve battery life, try turning off "Wireless location" in settings. However the battery life, even with various optimizations, is nowhere as good as iPhone 4.
The delays and stuttering you are experiencing is probably due to file system lag. Samsung uses RFS which is their own version of file system based on FAT32. Unfortunately that causes the phone to lag from time to time, usually when opening new applications or performing multiple I/O tasks. This can be fixed by installing one of the many lag fixes available. I use "One click lag fix" which you can download from the Market, but you will need to root the phone to apply it. There are several other alternatives which you can find in the "Development" forum.

Hi, glad CalenderPad worked out for your dad.
At times, android lovers seem to suffer from the Calimero effect
Your battery life could be a bit better, but not much. 1,5 days is considered normal, most of us have the goal to get through a full working day (and tinkering evening...) with one charge.
The stability issues are 90% Samsungs fault, because they did a less than perfect job on the software. HTC does a better job out of the box software wise. Indeed, a lagfix will most probably cure the symptoms, i have good experience with the Voodoo Lagfix. Instructions are easy, and can be found at project-voodoo.org.
To get rid of the Orange branding, you could flash an unbranded stock Samsung Rom from samfirmware.com (Link, you need to create an account for the link to work). The first time i flashed a ROM, it was nerving. But as long as you know how to get into recovery mode (and checked that Recovery Mode is available!) you should be fine. Just remember to disable/revert any lagfixes before flashing another ROM or Kernel to be safe.

Slow Dialer, Contacts and phonebook takes more tha 10 secs to load!!!! HELP

Just got my S$ upgraded to the lates version in my country which is 4.2.2 when I click on the dialer icon the screen freezes for 10 secs and it shows the numbers but when you press the numbers notheing happens and I guess when the program completely loads suddenly all the numbers pop up and aside from that whenever I type in a name in the messages or the contacts menu to look up someone to message or call it takes to long to load that my screen turns black and which I need to go back until I get the proper contact to be able to do some action with.... I know how to lenghten the time before it goes into energy saving mode or for screen to turn back but this is the exact problem I was staying away from since opting to get the Iphone 5... Since this has the best hardware as of the moment but to lag and freeze and sometimes even crash the phonebook or message app is ridiculous..... Sure you can do a lot of cool stuff but if it can't do this and the answer to my solution is to wait for an update just for a simple task of calling or messaging someone Samsung really brought out a half baked product. Hope you guys can help me with this because everytime I want to call or text someone I just do it on facebook a nokia 5110 would do better than this as far as calling and messaging.... Have they focused to much on the advanced features that they didn't fix the most basic elements of the phone. I had the HTC sensation, iphone 3 before that then this.. Since I'm into computers and pro open source I opted to stict with the android... but this is really pushing me to switch to Apple (who I hate but is really efficient at doing things its supposed to) or windows 8.
Help me with this problem so I don't give up on androids for my next phone I'd rather have a phone that is working lag free than the latest phone with the best specs that can't even do what it's supposed to do, basically reducing it to a bar of soap....

Hey this isn't an issue with the phone....its a problem with the update....there are a few things you can try out
1. Go to settings and go to application manager in the last tab....scroll to the 4th tab in the app manager...which is All.....and find your contact and contact storage apps.....clear their memory (note this will delete all your contacts....so backup) and retry accessing contacts as usual.
2. Usually the first step helps...if it doesn't... try to do a factory reset of your phone.....(This will delete all your app data....so backup)
3. You could also try to reflash the same firmware or a better update via odin.... Google and XDA are your friends so search the forums....there are many good tutorials.
4. Finally if you still feel like this isnt the answer...i suggest you to root your phone and install a new custom firmware....lots of good tutorials and roms on the XDA forums so check it out. If you dont know about rooting....approach with caution as this will void your warranty....
So try these out...hope it gave you some idea good luck!!
