SMS subject field - HD2 General

Maybe I'm just missing something, but this is something that's always drove me nuts with this phone. Is there anyway to add a subject to a SMS or MMS?

if i am not mistaken sms never had a subject line. Mms does. However, htc is very odd. If you send a picture you can add text to it and I believe that when it is delivered that message becomes the subject. Htc does not include bcc or cc recipients either. The only official way I have seen a heading for htc is to either flash to a custom ROM that takes out the htc messaging system or switch to the threadded option on the stock ROM. that "should" allow you to see the subject line in your mms.

I can see subject lines on received MMS, I just can't find a way to add a subject to one I'm sending.
HTC must somewhat support that field as it does show me a subject line when received, just didn't think to let me add it to the ones I send.
I tested just adding text with a pic and it doesn't show the text as a subject when received by others.
I really miss the messaging from my dead OmniaII.

anyone having texting issues?

So i'm having a problem with texting on the g1.
1) receive a text from someone not on your contact list.
2) add user to contact list
3) reply to text message
4) text message thread name shows as someone else
5) text goes to first person on contact list
6) delete text thread
7) compose new text, (select that new person)
8) text goes to new person
9) text thread shows as the same person from as person in #4
10) person from #8 replies and you receive it just fine.
11) reply to that text, but it goes to first person on your contact list. You don't even have to reply, when you open the text thread, the top left name shows a different name.
I have 2 contacts on my list that is linked all funky.
I have tried deleting the contact from gmail and adding them again, but I still get the issue with them.
oh if you leave the retarded thread sms there (that is displaying the wrong name) and compose a new text to the original person #8. it sends an email to #8 (that #8 cannot reply to) but shows up in your text inbox with "(no subject)" as the message preview
i know you probably sound crazy but i've had that exact same problem but good job on the description
hbguy
i'm glad i'm not the only one. LOL
factory reset fixes the issue with that user's contact, but now I have to reinstall everything.
I had a similar issue where I had an email via mms sent to my phone monthly. Like, [email protected]
Once that came in - any sms I received (when I hadn't started the thread) would say it was from that email. When I tried to reply it would go to the first person in my contact list (Aaron for example) rather than the [email protected] or the original sending party.
Only way to fix it (and this is TMo's advice too since it's now a known issue) is to not get the email anymore and do a factory reset. (Haven't had the problem since then, but will be nice when it is fixed.)
Yeah, I've had this problem as well. Bloody annoying.

SMS timing issue

Hello,
I seem to be having an issue with the time stamps on my text messages. The ones that I send are okay, however the ones that I receive all have different times on them. For example:
If I send a text at 8:15PM and receive a reply right away, it'll show my text sent at 8:15PM, but the reply will have a back dated time... Maybe 5PM, 4PM... something like that.
Any ideas why?
Thanks!
I find this but its by no means universal. some messages I recive are an hour ahead others are not. I recived two messages at almost the same time & one of them had the wrong time. I can't wait for the new update to fix all of these little issues
I've seen this problem since my G1. It's still suffering from it, as is my Magic and my Hero.
I'm still having the same issue.
My received text messages show a time of 4 hours behind.
So if I send a text at 6:30 and receive a reply at 6:32, it shows 2:32 as the received time.
Does anyone know if there's a fix for this? I have updated to the latest (leaked) firmware, but still no luck.
Thanks!
Are you all on the same network? Might not be the phone because i've never noticed this

Was just going to ask this... What network are you on, have you set network location to automatic by carrier, if so, set it manually to the city / country you are in.
I'm on O2 and have been using the network provided values.
I've set it to manual and text someone at 12:44. The reply came in a little while after and was stamped 12:45 so no issue there it seems. Strange.
I'm now getting issues now with texts in fairly quick succession.
The time stamps can be the same i.e. 21:17 but a reply from someone will sometimes appear before my original text in thread view.
Also a reply came in to one of my texts with a time stamp before my original text. This was displayed "correctly" as before my text, but the fact its timestamped in this way can't be right.
Anyone else seen this?
It's like the phone is looking at minutes for accuracy, not seconds. Also taking the timestamp of when a text was sent from the other person's phone as the time received to my phone. Hm :/
I get this on Orange when I receive a message from the US. All my outgoing messages are listed at the bottom of the conversation, while the one received from the US are at the top.
UK based conversations are all threaded correctly.
Ok thanks.
It never used to be like this so I'm wondering after prolonged use the sms database gets a bit corrupted somehow?
For me it seems to behave like this: for outgoing (sent) messages I see the time that is set on Hero. For incoming messages, however, Hero shows the time on the network provider.
I assume there is some header in SMS message containing the time, and Hero uses that instead of using the time Hero has when the message arrives.
I started using the Network Provider time (automatic) to get rid of this.

Native Text Message App - Sender Problem

I am coming from owning a Rogers HTC Magic running stock Rogers ROM (1.5) with 911 update.
Just picked up an N1 the other day and although it's a great unit, there are some minor annoyances that are starting to get to me.
One is the native text messaging app. Now, I am a real estate agent so I receive a lot of text messages from my office. With my Magic and any other phone for that matter, these text messages would appear as "7000" as the sender name/number for example as these messages are sent through a computer via the internet. It's very similar when you receive a text from your carrier wherein it's not coming from another phone, and it's typically shown as a number as indicated above.
The problem is that this number no longer appears as the sender name/number. Instead, the sender name/number shows up as the first word in the body of the text. This may seem trivial, however, what happens now is that all the text messages I am receiving from my office are no longer grouped under "7000" for example. Instead, text messages appear as a separate thread (sender).
For example....if my office were to send a fictitious text that reads "this is a test text message", this is how it should and used to look:
7000: this is a test text message
With my N1, this is how it appears now:
this: is a test text message
The only way it will display the proper name/number in the sender field is when the text comes from an actual cell phone.
I have tried another text messaging app like Handcent and the exact same thing happens. Brutal.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=629753
Wild shot, have you tried saving a contact with the phone number "7000"?
The first thing I did was try to make a contact with the name "7000" but that didnt work. For some reason the text app does not compute the sender name unless it's an actual phone number or contact.
supergodie thanks for the link....looks like im not the only one...too bad that thread was started back in February and still no fix. Hope it doesnt take too long as I would hate for such a small detail to be a deal breaker for me.
The other annoyance I have is that the native mail app does not have an option for signatures! It also does not allow you to copy text like my Magic did with a long press on the screen and a menu popping up asking to you select text. You would think such "small things" would be an afterthought and not something that should be missed or left out...such basic things...it boggles my mind.
btw supergodie, have you found any workaround for this?
handcent as I have reported does the same thing...I think its because the app works off the native mail app....whatever the case, the problem still exists with handcent.
perhaps another sms app that works?
Sorry, I have not found a solution, I used to it, wait an update by google.

No need to split sms on asop roms with latest Hancent app

Finally Hancent SMS app has rolled out an update where it converts to mms messages over 160 letters or more.
good to know, go sms pro only does splitting still
They keep rolling out new features, but don't deal with critical bugs.. like the wake lock issues that enabling popups causes.
What's the advantage of conversion to MMS versus splitting messages into bite-sized, if you will, pieces?
I personally like the splitting, and GO SMS numbers them so that the recipient knows when your messages are done or if they are out of order (I'm sure others do this, too, I just haven't checked personally so I can't make a statement there).
If I'm not mistaken, conversion to MMS would also require that one can receive MMS, no? Or that it doesn't cost them? Isn't that less cost-efficient for some when mostly everyone has unlimited SMS these days?
My understanding is a mms contains some sort of audio/video attachment, where as a sms is all text and limited to 160 chars (due to network limitations at the time).. Sms uses the same voice network, while mms uses the faster 3g network to handle the attachments.
1. SMS
SMS stands for Short Message Service and is the most widely used type of text messaging. With a SMS, you can send a message of up to160 characters to another device. Longer messages can be split up into several parts. Most cell phones support this type of text messaging, and sending a SMS is usually very cheap. SMSs can also be used to access various services from a portable device, such as Google and MSN. Spam sent as SMS is also becoming more common.
2. EMS
EMS means Enhanced Messaging Service and is an extension of the SMS. It provides SMS with functionalities such as text formatting (bold or italic fonts) and limited picture and animation support. If an EMS is sent to a phone that doesn’t support it, it will display as a standard SMS. EMS will probably be rendered obsolete by MMS.
3. MMS
MMS stands for Multimedia Messaging Service and this type of text messaging is an evolution of the SMS. With a MMS, you can send a message including pictures, video or audio content to another device. It is very useful to send a photo taken with a camera phone to another phone. Most new cell phones with multimedia capabilities support MMS. Because the size of the message is defined in kilobytes, a MMS can contain a lot more information than a SMS.
That's the definition of each one, and for me is very important I can sent messages of any size due to my work, I don't like split messages due to the fact that they brake and some of them loose content. I am also one that likes cyanogen and UD over a sense rom, so for me this is a must. I awaited long enough for this and finally is here!
I agree...still lags

[Q] Convert SMS to MMS at Will?

For host alerts at my place of work we use Nagios to send email alerts to the email associated with our phone number by the carrier so if your phone number was 555-555-1234 you could send an email to your phone with:
SMTP:[email protected]
These come through as an email address and with I believe the stock app and Handcent I can reply to these the four digit code associated with an alert to acknowledge them and sort of take responsibility for fixing the issue. I was kind of wondering why only some apps support this and how some of them just fail to send. I was also kind of hoping there was a way to make all sms applications support this. I believe the apps that support it are converting from sms to mms because the target is an email. Which brings me to my apology if this is already a thread somewhere. It's incredibly difficult to search using the same keywords someone would use to do the opposite of what you're looking for. If a solution for this exists I'm sorry. Anytime I search for a solution to this I get "how to stop sms converting to mms" and many other similarly titled threads. Any ideas?
