Seriously, how can they call this an 8MP camera?
No matter what menu settings, location, lighting I choose MOST of the pics always come out looking like garbage. Really fuzzy.
No wonder Droid X and iPhone's camera destroyed this in the tests.
And the camcorder is another good joke from HTC. 720p video recording? Really? Total joke.
What kind of magical settings do you people use to make it look better?
Maybe I will hire a professional photographer/lighting specialist to follow me all over 24/7 just in case I need to take some decent pics with this damn thing.

not gonna lie it kinda does suck on video and on normal shots you have to be still for a couple of seconds and it looks really nice

It's the software that comes with it I've tried other camera software like camera pro it snaps fast like really fast. Just that the software needs to be updated for the HTC EVO. Far as stock camera video its the software encoding sucks. The hardware is great just finding the right software or somebody develops one. Seems as if all the devs are busy rooting and tweaking the roms that HTC and Google should of done before even releasing software. Then maybe the devs can focus on making apps for us. Maybe somebody will soon develop better camera and video app that really take advantage of this great camera.

Are you focusing the camera? Press and hold on the screen in the area you want to focus and it will focus and snap the picture. The pictures are pretty good (not DSLR quality or anything, but much better than most/all phones).

Ok, two things to point out here
1. The Droid X and iPhone did not destroy the Evo in terms of camera. Camcorder wise yes, but not the camera itself. That's working just fine, and I haven't heard too many complaints about the camera itself. Most cell phone cameras at this level produce similar results.
2. Yes, the video quality does suck ass, but its been made a whole lot better here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711808. My evo is recording at 13 mbps in h.264, and the results are fantastic. We shouldn't have to be doing this, but at least its working.

Megapixels =/= photo quality directly. Mega pixel = 1 million pixels. 8 MP = 8 million pixels. There is much more than just "MP" when comparing cameras silly..

Very true. Tons of megapixels really only help when you want to get huge prints. The two most important parts of a camera in my opinion are the image sensor and the lens, neither of which are going to be that great on any phone camera. I think the pictures the Evo takes are pretty good for a phone.
The evo camera isn't amazing... but if you need quality pictures, DON'T RELY ON YOUR PHONE. It's a ****ing phone! Get yourself a point and shoot or a DSLR.

Photos around the forum. The camera in this EVO are capable of taking great photos plus EVO has the processor to handle it more than what a point and shoot has. Soon cell phones will be getting dual cores. But until then it is this whack stock software that is processing the photos. Take the iPhone 5mp camera making the EVO picture look bad because they have a great camera software. Only if somebody can write a better camera app if I could code that would of been the first app I would of made. That and a better video conferencing app.

As someone who has owned and used both the iPhone 4 and the Evo (returned my iP4 for the Evo), I can confidently say that the iP4's camera does indeed destroy the one on the Evo. I love my Evo and wouldn't switch back if you paid me, but the cameras aren't even in the same league.
The Evo takes photos which are on-par with the smartphones we've all seen and used over the last few years. They're okay. You can put the pics up on your website, etc., but I wouldn't rely on the Evo for anything particularly important. The iP4's camera, on the other hand, is just amazing. It can hold its own against any of the typical $200 - $300 non-DSLR cameras on the market and, therefore, can effectively be your everyday, walking around camera.
The best summary I can give is that the Evo's camera is a good to okay camera -- for a cell phone. The iP4's camera is a very good camera -- period.

Are you judging the fuzzy picture at first glance? By that I mean preview after your shot or in gallery? Because sometimes the picture if you don't zoom in it can look really fuzzy and then when you zoom in a title bit it corrects the picture quality and be very clear. Also download them to your pc and see how they actually turn out. You might be surprised. I am an avid amateur photographer so I use DSLR to shoot pictures. In good light the camera and software combo isn't bad. It has horrible low light capability but then again its a phone camera. And as many people said a few tweak here and there with the software and it will make a big difference. I know when they tweaked the HTC HD2 phone I had it made a world of difference. I know it will happen on this phone too. We have to let some get past the linpacks and quadrant scores for a little while before cameras become the hot topic

the pictures aren't the greatest but i have gotten some really good ones. I attached a few. People need to quit complaining though, it's a damn phone and the quality isn't half bad, if we can make it better then so be it but it's good as it is. These are from when i took my lil sisters to the zoo we were at the butterfly garden. I didn't edit these at all and they look even better on my phone
Its inferior to other devices so actually we should complain. Sure you can get nice shots but its anything but automatic.

I agree on both sides here...the camera is pretty decent, but I do believe software improvements can and should be made.
Hasn't it been posted here that the camera manufacturer is the same as the ip4's?

They can call it an 8MP camera because it IS an 8MP sensor that produces a photograph that contains 8 million pixels.

Exactly. I would have to say that's one of the reasons for the "megapixels aren't everything" argument. It's just a description of how many pixels the sensor can produce like you said.
If you have a bigger sensor (which is difficult in a cellphone camera obviously) like in a DSLR, you get bigger pixels. I freakin' love my new Canon Rebel T2i I just bought last week!
These 2 pixs are of my daughter I am posting to show how good the basic camera in the Vibrant is. These were my 1st try at this. I used a prism and Held in front at a distance to make the effect (free hand holding, that is why not perfectly clear).

You should get a GOOD camera and compare the difference. You probably won't say the same thing after that.
Canon g11, Canon s90, or something equivalent (not all cameras are created equal)

Those are cool shots man. I took some pics while in Alaska that blew me away at how good they look, even on a large pc screen. Very impressed with the camera as well.

What is your point? The SGS takes great pictures. Of course the S90 and G11 may take better pictures in certain situations, but the point of a camera phone is its always with you.
I went to a car show last weekend and brought my SGS and a Canon SD780IS. I ended up using my SGS the majority of the time because the pictures were amazing given everything was outdoors.

Since I do have a Canon G 11, Nikon D200 and D90 and I have to use all for my work They are all great cameras. The G11 is the best point and shoot out there) The comparison is not to compare cameras that have a 2.8 lens (1"+ aperture opening size) to one that is 1/16" lens, that is an incorrect comparison. The correct comparison is comparing to the other phone camera out there and this one is pretty easy and pretty decent compared to the 1/2 dozen I have had in the past.

Maybe you guys think that diffraction-limited, low dynamic range, under-saturated photos are great... but the only time I pull out any cell phone to take a picture is when I don't have a real camera with me.
They aren't horribly bad photos, but they aren't anything to write home about. You could get photos of the same quality from a $90 el cheapo digital camera.
If you make a post saying "hey, look how awesome these photos are", and the photos aren't awesome... then maybe its stupid of you get angry, eh?

so you want to compare a $500 device that is practically a portable computer with a 5MP camera attached to it to a $500 device which is a PROFESSIONAL CAMERA with probably 12+MP.

The point the author and the rest of us are trying to make is that the pictures are amazing for what it is.
My girlfriend has a motorola RIZR Z3 with a piece of crap 1.3MP camera. she takes lots of pictures with it and sends them to me, and ya know what, they look pretty good coming from that piece of crap camera.
But when she sees the pictures i take with my nexus she's amazed that they came from a phone. Now do they look as good as the pictures from my olympus or nikon? hell no, but they sure as hell look damn good when you say they came from a phone.
And not everyone likes to carry around a big DSLR everywhere they go too. Hell i went up to Washington DC for a week long vacation and i didn't bring that thing along because of how bulky it is.
The man wanted to show pictures that in his opinion looked pretty good considering it was a cellphone. Im pretty sure we all know that for a fact cameras are only designed for quality pictures..and the only point you people are proving is how none of you care to show the world that you all waste your time with pointless arguments

Being realistic....a phone camera is just that, a phone camera.
Maybe in 5 more years they will take good pictures, but for now, not a single one is worth it to use as anything more than just a "it's all I had with me at the time" type camera.
My 10 year old Sony F550V blows my Vibrant out of the water in pic quality. Of course it has a real Zeiss lense....but hey
Hey guys, new here to Android and it millions of bells and whistles....
I have a question, the camera takes agreat pictures, provided that the camera and subject are perfectly still. Any type of movement and you are left with a blur.
I was wondering if this shutter speed is a hardware issue or software? If it's software, is there any patch or build that can be added to a temp rooted phone (VISIONary)?
Or a dumb question....is it a setting that I need to tweak???? right now it's all set to HD, superfine, yara yara yara....all the user settings are on max....

I'm not sure if shutter speed is to blame at all. Seems like all the htc cameras frigging suck. I still have my old n97 and ill tell ya, its pics look way better than any htc android phone. I have an awesome point n shoot. But every now and then I have to use my phone, I don't walk around with my cybershot everywhere I go. I don't expect dslr like quality pics. But I think htc should read a page from nokias book.
I also hope there is a tweak for this. I love the G2 but my Vibrant was reigned supreme on everything picture related. Please let there be a fix, including even the samsung galaxy S camera app.

Wow really???? I tried the vibran, and the main reason I stayed away was because the camera sucked!!!1 and no Flash what gives????
The [email protected] IMHO is far superior taking pics than the vibrant, but neither trump the camera on my BB8900 with 3.2 MP. I over a thousand pics with that phone....some that have been enlarged to 8.5 x 11 and are hanging on my walls....I can't say that I see myself hanging anything taken with the G2...and that is very unfortunate!!!

Absolutely, the Vibrant camera and software is superior, the camera takes a picture immediately. The application is amazing with touch to focus and several quality presets (panorama sport burst, etc.) It does have a lack of flash which sucks but the night mode almost makes up for it. it feels like forever to take a picture with the G2. like OP said, if the subject of the picture moves within the shutter period, a big blur is the result.

dude I had a vibrant. Its camera takes much better pics than the g2. The vibrants video capture is much smoother and better detailed too. Its still not as good as my old n900 and n97.
I'd kill for a nokia branded android phone. I hope meego flops lol.
Also, I had a curve 8900 and a bold 9700. Worse cameras ever unless u were taking pics of documents. I can honestly say that those blackberrys pics were better than a g1 but no where near as nice as the vibrants.
My N1 took very crisp photos but even with little motion the G2 looks like crap there has to be a software fix for this

well now that u mention it, my n1 did take less blurry pics than my g2; but I think the g2's pics look a hair better as long as the subject doesn't move.
The day will come when nude chicks r jumping on a trampoline and I hope for the g2's sake that those pics wont come out blurry. Otherwise it may meet a blender lol
the G2 has the best camera i have used in a long time on a phone. i have had 6 phones this year alone and the G2 has the best camera out of all of them, and it has flash and a dedicated button on the side. vibrant was one of the phones i had in the past and the lack of flash and dedicated button really bugged me after a while. odds are once we get custom ROMs and CM6 there will be improvements on the camera including touch to focus(the only thing i liked about the vibrant)

Same with every phone I've ever had... if you move it the pictures suck.
what happens if you disable the autofocus?

Because its a panorama image
Its a nice scene, but thats what the camera excels at, scenes. If you want to use the camera to capture the details of an event its not so good.

If the "event" is indoors or some other area that is dimly lit, the HTC is probably gonna do a better job than other higher pixel'd phone cams
Maybe, that's not always true either. It's useless at sporting events unless you just want to capture the atmosphere rather than actual action.

Thousands also use digital zoom, it doesn't make it right.

It has gotten a perfect picture the first time, every time for me. I am so glad that I no longer have to worry about turning on lights in my normally dark house. Maybe your phone needs a usermod? I don't need the 13mp to text a picture or post something to facebook. If I'm taking a photo I care about I'll use a real camera.

In all seriousness, this camera has consistently produced images of quality from a phone. I've printed some of them already in 4x6 and 5x7. They looked fabulous. That's damn good enough for me. :good:
I dont really take pictures in my house, I take them when out and about. Its just not got the resolution to be able to resolve objects more than 50ft away in any detail. As I said it takes nice 'scenes', but for example, at a zoo its useless, because animal invariably aren't close to you. Its useless at motor sport events because it cant resolve the cars unless you are very close to them. I took a few shot at a recent event with the One, and a few with the Nexus 10 as a comparison, and it was the N10 that gave me the best single shot!
It does work as a social media camera, which is I suppose what HTC said all along, but lets not be fanboys here, it has big limitations. Most of the shots on this site that are showing off its abilities are macros, which are nice, but frankly any phone can do that, and I was taking better ones with my N95!

Not the best but what I use to take real pictures. You know, like ones at the zoo. Maybe you should pick something like this up if you want to shoot events.

Like most people I just want a simple point and shoot device, i dont care enough or need a $600 camera. However I do want one that takes pictures that are worthwhile having.
I wouldn't mind it only being as good as an average phone for these type of shots, but the fact that its worse than a tablet, or even an old phone is inexcusable. The fact is pretty much every 8MP camera phone takes better shots in these situations.
Hi guys, I would like to share some photos I took with my HTC One from the summit of Mount Elbrus.
Just a note tho, i was wearing ski goggles and the sun was extreme bright. So i couldn't really see the screen. It was mostly 'point and shoot' without the focusing part.
It was roughly -20 degrees at the summit, I was genuinely surprised when my beloved One was still functioning (my brother's iPhone died at the summit).
I did experience some difficulties taking some pictures while near the peak, I don't know if its from the cold (the battery was around 3 degrees Celsius) or everything was too white for the autofocus to work properly. sometimes it took roughly 10 seconds (from pressing the shutter to picture being saved) for the picture to be taken.
I would love to hear your guys opinion regarding the photos!
Another thing, The battery on the One is EXTREMELY resilient, I was able to run the GPS chip to do Geo-logging for over 12 hours and the battery was only down the 30% even in the extreme temperature!

These are really great pictures.
They remind me that the One has very coarse granulation of image adjustments. ie, trying to increase the exposure of a scene by the minimum increment will *drastically* increase the exposure.
In scenes like the ones in these pictures where there is a lot of snow, you generally want the snow to be a little whiter, less gray, so that the distant sky and forest will have a normal exposure. If the One allowed you to increase exposure *a little bit* , you could probably get the perfect balance of detail and realism. But I imagine if you set the camera to the smallest possible increase, ie " + 1 " , it would completely blow out all the lighter areas of the picture.
..at least with the initial versions of the camera software (ie system software 1.2x). They may improve this later I realize.
Of course at 5000+ meters you probably don't want to be playing around with the "image adjustments" menu anyway. So the default settings produced perfectly acceptable shots considering the conditions.

I was about to say, am I the only one that doesn't agree that theses are great pictures? It seems many judge pictures by the scenery but not the quality of the image.
Sure the subject matter and location are stunning, but the quality of the image is not really that good. My old sgs2 would have taken a better picture with more clarity and less noise. That phone is over two years old!
If I took a grainy, noisy picture of Kim karsashian in bed with Cheryl Cole people,would still be saying wow! Great image! What a great camera! The One sure has a good sensor!
No offence, I have the One, like the one, keeping the one, but I sure hope some image improvements are on the way.
I think it's certainly possible to find fault with the images.
But we have lots of other threads for stuff like that.
I'm willing to just accept this thread at face value: a guy took this phone to the top of a very high mountain and the phone's camera performed ably in this unusual environment. Nothing more nothing less.
I commend him for the report (as well as the journey itself!).

Exactly.... I've taken a number on top of mountains myself and whilst the One shoots ably, the fact is the photos once you actually zoom in lack detail. The grave stone in first pictures for example lacks detail, the text can not be read. Everything beyond normal focal range is overly soft and lacking details and suffer noise and artefacts. Or the fact in one of the photos of your climbing partners, if you zoom in you can't even make out details on their clothing or faces sadly.
As much as I love my One, the reality is for landscapes where much of clarity is in distant objects the 4mp on the one just isn't enough to capture the fine details.
Yes they look great on Facebook, twitter and posted on forums when viewed quickly, but when you load up the full image and actually examine it the faults are all to easy find.
In the scenario the OP took the picture, blue clear day - ultrapixel actually provided NO benefit as there was always enough light for the image to capture, but the lack of megapixels does hurt because with greater MP we would have been able to see so much more clarity in the photo, a clarity that would have done so much more justice to the breathtaking view on the summit than sadly the camera does capture.
Congrats OP on your climb / achievement - its great. But I think some folks are mixing up your 'great' achievement with 'great' photo. Sadly the photos are just fine.

Just a note tho, i was wearing ski goggles and the sun was extreme bright. So i couldn't really see the screen. It was mostly 'point and shoot' without the focusing part.
It was roughly -20 degrees at the summit, I was genuinely surprised when my beloved One was still functioning (my brother's iPhone died at the summit).
I did experience some difficulties taking some pictures while near the peak, I don't know if its from the cold (the battery was around 3 degrees Celsius) or everything was too white for the autofocus to work properly. sometimes it took roughly 10 seconds (from pressing the shutter to picture being saved) for the picture to be taken.
I would love to hear your guys opinion regarding the photos!
Another thing, The battery on the One is EXTREMELY resilient, I was able to run the GPS chip to do Geo-logging for over 12 hours and the battery was only down the 30% even in the extreme temperature!

yes it's a basic fact the ultrapixel camera will never be useful if zoomed, for that get another device
otherwise its one of the best all rounder phone cameras, especially in low light
the only thing weird in these photos, considering how much sun is that the images are little under exposed, guess the phone was trying to counter the extreme light in auto mode
as for the battery looks like heat is a good contributor to drain in ordinary use

Was actually thinking the same thing. Setting must have been changed in camera for contrast / exposure because I've shot in similar circumstances and the HTC One will tend to over expose. It could also explain 'additional' noise in the image if settings like that have been changed in image adjustments.
I think HDR would have likely done a better job at balancing it out (which is what I tend to do myself) rather than leaving it on standard setting albeit with image settings adjusted....
Absolutely amazing! First of all congratulations on your milestone...a fantastic achievement!
Secondly...I would like to propose your post + pics for HTC One's top-achievement...ever (so far). Ridiculous really for a mobile phone to function at all at nearly 6 km height...plus taking some real quailty pics to boot :highfive:

Would the SGS2 have taken better pictures in that extreme environment though?
Yes they are a bit noisy, yes the scenery is great, there is a tradeoff there but the real issue is the environment.
