evo in the uk - EVO 4G General

Hello all
you lucky sods we are not getting this phone or a version of it here in the U.K or Europe. So my ? is what’s the possibility of this phone working on our networks as i am thinking of getting one from you lucky sods. cheers jez

The EVO is a CDMA phone, so if you could somehow unlock the phone and then get it activated on a UK CDMA network(do such things exist?) you could get it working.

Hello Tilton53
been looking and it appears it will not work on our network and as usual HTC are blind to our requirements and have no plans to launch a version for us. It amazes me how someone who bleets on about how they listen to their users always miss the mark for us. Maybe they will wake up one day and make a phone like this and make it world wide universal. I mean I don’t like apple in any sense but a least they make their products universal and available world wide. Cheers jez
P.S maybe someone here will crack the issue so we can use them and get it from the U.S.A

The UK only has GSM networks, so it's a no-go for you guys. And quit complaining about missing the mark. We've always had to wait months and months for HTC to release their handsets in the US after their European release. I'm sure HTC has something cooking for the rest of the world if the EVO takes off.

HTC Universal and The USA

I've had the Wallaby since T-Mobile (USA) offered it (I think about three years). I've gotten a lot of good use out of it, mostly thanks to this forum. However, it's time for me to upgrade, and I'd like some feedback from everyone.
First, I'd like to upgrade to a device that has an intergraded keyboard, since my wife has the h4355 and, comparing usage of her device to mine in that respect, it is indispensable in my opinion. So if I upgraded now I would like to get a Blue Angel clone.
But, all these glowing reviews and pictures of the HTC Universal tempt me to wait to upgrade. It truly looks like a dream device!
Since I live in the USA, though, our carriers may not pick this up for another year (if at all?), and at my rate of years-per-upgrade I would probably miss out on quite a bit. So here are what seem to be my choices at the moment:
1.) Forget about getting my hands on the Universal for the next year (or longer), upgrade to the BA now.
2.) Wait until it is released in Europe and probably pay well over $1000 to buy it from a third party.
3.) It is worth the wait for a US carrier to pick it up. It may be a shorter time than I think.
4.) Other.
So which would you do?
Other things to keep in mind are that there are no decent BA's currently offered by any of the US carriers, they are all stripped versions, minus this feature or that feature. So I would have to get one of those from Europe anyway. Do you think US carriers will strip the Universal the same way they have with the BA? Additionally, as someone else previously mentioned, how much do you expect the Universal to be, if the BA is currently around $800?
Can anyone offer any speculation of cost or release date in the USA?
Thanks for the feedback!
Shawn
I think that the universal keyboard will be better than the thumboard on the BA - so you should not buy a BA now, unless you REALLY need something now.
The Universal will be released in europe probably sometime in september from what I have been hearing, so you can get it in a few months for the "normal" price of 900-1200 (which is what the range was for the BA when it originally came out)
It is not likely that US carriers will release this. *maybe* T-mobile will release it, but judging from their past history, it seems unlikely.
Cingular will DEFINATELLY not release it because it lacks GSM 850. Also the UMTS band that is on the universal is not 1900/850 which is what Cingular uses and will use in the future. if the universal was quadband GSM and triband UMTS it might have been a different story.
If you are on the T-Mo network and really want it, just get it when it gets released in europe. That way you have form, function and the WOW factor since it wont be released in the US
Note to HTC: please, please, please make the next version of the universal quadband GSM and at least dual band UMTS (1900/2100)
I will select the "WAIT" if I were you, T-Mobile in NYC was not able to setup my Qetk 9090 on GPRS, the anwser of their failure... we do not know this device... :? (however I succeed to make it work) But I would also wait, PocketPC Italia is talking about 2 devices this year and more coming in 2006 It only depends on how "wealthy" you are but well if you purchase the Universal and that a 9090 like shows up... what will you do?
By the way if you are in the Chicago area you may find a lost Universal
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/_assets/video/TechEd/Final-MobilityV7-300K.wvx
Bottom line this is a nice devie not SO big but the lack of Screen control on the body (like a communicator) may make it borring to use (my 2 cents)
Perhaps North American users can wait and hope for an 850 MHz model, like done with the JAM.

There are some people on earth, like, who are FED UP of only being able to use his 9090 only when he is outside of his country... In Japan we ONLY HAVE 3G... and I cannot use the phone function of my 9090 that I love when I m in a GSM country... so I will buy again and again and again ANY HTC Products simply because of their amazing quality and potential (look around can you cook an iPAQ 4700 or a Treo? and how EASY it is to change a rom) and with a Phone capability...
Cheers

US Touch Dual on Best Buy website

Just saw the Touch Dual available for preorder on the Best Buy website. Would it work on just rolled out 3G T-Mobile network or ATT is the only option? I live in New York area...

Unless they've done something drastic, unlock and you're ready to rock'n'roll.
Wasn't the Touch Dual in America supposed to be carrier free?
If so, both T-mobile and AT&T should work.
It is going to be sold unlocked... But the T-Mo US uses different bands for their 3G then the ATT. Does anyone know if the US Touch Dual will work with T-Mo 3G data network?

Odd that the picture shown has the 16-key keyboard, not the 20-key. Everything I've read says only the 20-key is coming to America - isn't that right?
Actually, some Best Buy pictures show 16 key and some show 20 key.
I wrote HTC to ask and they said there is no Touch Dual for the USA (helpful).
just got back from local best buy and picked it up and it is the qwerty 20 key
I called a few local Best Buys here in Los Angeles, but they all say its not in?
I have to say I dont know if I belive them or not... Anyone in SoCal had any luck?
Just picked up the touch dual from my BB. However, will this work with a mac?
this is so annoying. Once again, Chicago metro area - none on hand, non in distribution. What's the point of these announcements anyhow if they can't be fulfilled - may as well be "Diamond available at Best Buy now" for the effectiveness it has.
Riddle me this - is the old touch that has been available gray market up til now the same unit? If it is - and since I'll be ripping my rom apart anyhow -- I may go back to my fave gray marketers.
Hyper: not without jumping through hoops. As a mac guy by choice, and PC guy by work - it's too much grief. Look for third party software if it's your only choice, or install activesync in your fave windows emulator.

Nope, it's not the same. The on that's been available for a while is tri-band, this one is quad-band with US 3G. Picked one up in local BB today, seems to be working just great and 3G is very snappy. Still no WiFi or GPS though:-(
Dump Rom
Cold one of you guys dump a ROm from your US version? Do they come with wm6 or wm6.1
Thanks
6.1 just dont know if this is a keeper, prob not
Anyone know how to get a gmail account working on a windows device? (So far setting up a windows device is a PITA, debating why Im switching from my Curve right now).

Sorry. I got everything working anyway. Only thing I dont like about the phone so far is that it washes out in the sun. Impossible to see the screen today.
Is anyone using it on US T-Mo?
I am also interested in a ROM dump of the US Touch Dual
Best Buy website for me says Pre order only. I didnt realized it released yet.

HTC Hero130 (Telus Version)

First off - I Private Messaged a couple of people about this, but realized that I should have just posted this in the forum. So, my apologies for anyone seeing this a second time.
I've been getting all sort of conflicting information about the Hero 130 (The Telus one) and which UMTS bands it supports.
Most of the information I see at places like PDADB says that it's UMTS enabled for 850/1900 only, which are the North American bands. FCC reports and the Telus user manual show testing for WCDMA (UMTS) 850/1900 only.
However, HTC's Canada Hero website (http://www.htc.com/ca/product/herotelus/specification.html) says "Dual Mode UMTS" and lists frequencies for US (850/1900), EU/Asia (900/2100) and Telstra (850/2100). Two HTC support techs from their website also confirm that the Hero 130 supports UMTS for US EU/Asia and Telstra, but it feels like they are just regurgitating information from the extremely vague website.
The device is a quad-band worldwide device. These are the bands the device is capable of using:
Europe/Asia
UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (900/2100MHz for EU/Asia)
North America
850/1900
Telestra
850/2100
GSM/GPRS/EDGE (Quad-band 850/900/1800/1900Mhz)
If the bands you are needing are any of these then the device should work.

Has anyone with a HERO130 actually gone overseas and seen if you get UMTS/3G to work overseas - or has seen anything that conclusively and definitively proves if it does or does not work?
Thanks!
I'm wondering the same thing. I'd like to get the Telus one and use it here on AT&T 3g in the states... anyone know if that is possible?
The Telus version of the HTC Hero (aka HERO130 or A6265) definitely supports ATT's 3G bands. It's been confirmed via the FCC documentation as well that 850/2100 is supported. T-Mobile's 1700MHz is not supported.
My question is specifically in regards to the European/Asian (900/1900MHz) bands. HTC's confirmed that it does support by phone, but I'm still a little dubious. However, I'm ordering one and am going to give it a test!
Stay Tuned!

Yes. It is possible. I've got the Telus Hero, unlocked and running on the Rogers network. HSDPA/3G works fine on Rogers. North American radio bands for 3G are supported with this hardware.

Awesome! How difficult is the unlocking process?
I just thought about something. I'm used to the iPhone where you have to root your phone to unlock it for other carriers. Is the way it work with the HTC Hero and the like is that you just pay full price for the phone ($499) and it comes unlocked already? No tinkering needed?

The unlocking process is not painful at all, but it costs you $20-25. When you insert a non-Telus sim into the device and power it up, it will tell you that you are using the wrong sim and ask you to enter the unlock code. The unlock code is specific to the IMEI of you phone, so they can't be shared. They can be purchased on eBay for slightly more than $20.
Note that you cannot unlock your phone by flashing a custom ROM. So unless you figured out the magic formula for generating these unlocking code (different for each device and different for each carrier), you have to pay for it one way or another.

I paid mine for the full price too, but this doesn't make the phone automatically unlocked. Telus enters an exclusive contract with HTC to be the sole carrier of this phone in Canada (at least for now), and they have every right to make sure that an average-joe, who knows nothing about unlocking, who wants this phone have to go to them, with or without contract. Exclusive dealings are extremely common in cell phone industry, and they are not free for the carrier.
I doubt Telus would unlock the phone for you. In the US, T-Mobile will unlock their phones for you a few months into the 2-year contract, may be Telus will do the same, if you signed a contract with them that is.
I just went to eBay and notice that there are now many sellers selling Telus Hero unlock code, and some are selling for as low as $13. I bought mine from a seller called cellfservices, it is not the cheapest but it worked (and it took them about an hour after the sales to send me the code).
mobileincanada.ca seems to be one that is very popular for unlocking, $20cdn, and they usually send unlock code very fast (within 5 minutes)
all right people.
I am here to bust the myth.
Telus hero does not have asian HSPA band.
I have two heros: GSM and Telus.
Tested location: Taiwan.
Telus hero with Taiwan sim card = GPRS only, no 3G connection.
GSM hero = 3G connection.
Telus hero does not have dual model 3G, period.
So which do I get for AT&T
Ok so I'd like one of these WITH 3G connection on AT&T so which one would I get to make this happen? I'm leaning toward the Telus model from what I've been reading but if anyone can confirm or deny this, that would be great. Also once I have it and it's been unlocked, then what do I tell AT&T? Just order a second line with a data plan? Won't they ask me what type of phone is this for or how should I do this?

The Telus Hero is the only current Hero model that will work with 3G/HSDPA in North America. The European Hero will only use Edge for Data - it doesn't support the North American radio bands. The Sprint model only supports CDMA.
Do you need a second line? Are you planning to run two cell phones? If not, just switch your current AT&T SIM into the Hero and get a data plan for that SIM/line.
I do plan on running a second line yes. I have an iPhone 3GS as my main phone and I am planning on using the Hero to play around with as my second phone. The hero is a decent phone and fun to flash and play around with etc... but I couldn't ever really use it as my main phone. I definitely couldn't give up my iPhone 3GS for an Android phone just yet there are still some refinements that Android as a mobile OS needs to undergo and still some refinements that HTC needs to bring to the SenseUI as well. I rely too heavily my phone and it doing what I need it to do as fast as possible. I did have the Sprint Hero for a month before I took it back, I just didn't like it... it was slow, laggy, and some of the things I wanted to do with the phone that I was just so used to doing on my iPhone either couldn't be done OR had to be done in a way that didn't make very much logical or design sense. I had a lot of those 'why can't I just press this to make it do that?' moments or 'why the heck would they put this menu under here?' moments. Anyhow with that being said, Hero and Android are still fun platforms to play with and flash and try different settings and home screens and different ROMS etc so I'm going to get another one but this time on AT&T so I can use voice and data at the same time (one of the things I hated about having the Hero on spring was the inability to use data and voice at the same time as well as how slow sprints data was compared to AT&T)... but I wouldn't want a phone that I flashed and played around with so much to be a phone I relied on for mission critical work.
So what's the best way of going about this? What type of line should I order from AT&T? What should I ask for when i call or go into the store to get another line? Any suggestions?
I just got my Telus Hero last week, and coming from a 3G iphone, this blows it away. Not sure about the 3GS as it is a faster processor..... Also better than the Tilt 2. Love it. Just waiting on Eclair to get Google Navigation and other goodies...

Yeah the iPhone 3G (I have both a 3G and 3Gs) and the Hero are pretty comparable. Browsing the web (which I do a lot) is faster on the 3G but the loading of applications etc... are pretty much the same. This is stock to stock so no modding on either phone. The scrolling on the 3G is much smoother than a stock Hero. I know that there are ROMS that make the device faster which is the only reason I'm even rethinking about getting one. The 3GS however is just no contest. But I've pretty much had all the fun I can out of the iPhone; not talking about the the apps as there are so many apps to choose from and a lot of them are awesome and fun to use, but with modding the phone itself and playing around with the OS etc I've done all I can do with the iPhone and want something new to play with...

Just tell them you have an existing phone so you want a new SIM and to purchase a plan for a smartphone (data and voice plan) - they can advise you on deals and packages then. The carrier should never care about the phone - it's not like they make money on it - they usually subsidize the manufacturer for a unit anyway, in a profit sharing deal. The only thing the carrier is really interested in is the data and voice carriage charges.
i would just tell them you want to add a line for regular phone with unlimited data. that way you dont have to pay extra for the smart phone data. unless of course its cheaper and you can just for like ten dollars make your smart phone data plan you have now a family unlimited

That would not be the best option. If you are going to add a line, figure out which phone they are giving away for free they you can get the biggest profit by flipping on eBay. Most likely the Solstice.
This way you can get away with the cheaper non-smart phone data plan and get about $200 back by selling the "free" phone they give you.
Can anyone confirm if the telus hero ships with the updated faster firmware? Thanks.

Looking to swap HTC Magic(Rogers) for My Touch 3G - TMobile

I have a month-old rooted black HTC Magic - Rogers (running it on Fido). It's running the RAv1.6.2 – Donut ROM. I'm looking to swap for a clean (not necessarily brand new but in a similar condition) My Touch 3G - TMobile. I'm looking to switch from Fido to Wind Mobile but the Rogers HTC Magic radio is not compatible with the 1700/2100 bands that Wind Mobile is on. My understanding is that T-Mobile phones work on those bands. Either reply or pm me for any offers.
u are in luck my man
I have an unlocked t-mobile my touch 3g but unfortunately I have at&t so no 3g I'm having the exact same problem but how would we set up the trade trade
Location, Location
I live in Toronto, not too sure if you do. If so we can definitely setup a meet and maybe a chance to check out the phone. Let me know.
RE: Location. Location
I live in DC closest I can think of. Is NY
RE: Location Location
I'm sorry my fault what I meant to say was that I live in DC but the closest place to meet for us would be New York City I'm guessing that would be halfway for both of us, thats if u dont mind traveling if u do I understand. but I'm willing to trade, phone is in very nice condition I just sold my iphone so I had it for about 2 weeks now and not having 3g is starting to get to me
Trying to figure this out
Sorry for the delayed response. I wouldn't be able to travel that far until a couple of weeks from now but would you know of a shipping service or something that we can utilize to facilitate a swap perhaps.
But How ?
Ive been doing a little research on a couple of sites that offer swapping services, but since this is the first time Ive tried to do something like this I'm not sure of the logistics. I dont want to end up with a Brick or a damaged phone or no phone at all and vise versa. Here are a list of the sites im talking about, SwapAce.com, [email protected], and Ive not taken a look at these yet, Swaptree.com UExchange.com BarterQuest.com I dont know if they offer shipping services or if they just help u find people to swap stuff. I would rather we both check the phones out in person to make sure we are both satisfied, you sound like a sincere person but if there is no other way im willing to ship the phone if u are. But how ?

Droid Pro on Virgin / T-Mobile UK 3G?

Hi all,
I am about to import an activated (with included Verizon unlock code) Droid Pro into the UK so all the essential bases should be covered. However, I saw that some people were having real problems with getting 3G reception on their Droid Pros in Europe. Does anybody have any experiences about using the Droid Pro in the UK, specifically on Virgin and/or T-Mobile??
Many thanks!

Mine has been fine. I used it for a while on T-Mobile, and I was able to pick up 3G or HSPA pretty much everywhere. I'm on 3 now, but I'm thinking about going back to T-Mobile because the 3 signal seems to cut out randomly, and I can't seem to access the internet very much. I went with 3 because they're the only ones that let you use up to 1GB, but what's the point, if you can't access it anyway?
Haha, yes very true. Check out Virgin! I am on a 15GBP/month plan with 500mins, unlimited texts and 1gb of internet, they use T-Mobile's lines thats why I was asking... Best deal I have found around so far! Oh and I should say its a pay-monthly contract.
Thanks so much for the quick reply, I will proceed to actually buying it... would you recommend it generally?

I don't really need that many minutes, so I've just been paying 10GBP. I've realized that I don't use cellular internet that much because my life pretty much consists of being at my flat, or being at school, and I have WiFi at both places. I just need a supplement on the rare occasions that I'm somewhere else, so 500MB should get me by.
I was kind of shocked to find out that internet here is so limited. I always thought Europe was way ahead of the U.S. in terms of speed and bandwidth.
Anyway, as far as the phone goes, I love mine. My favorite phone that I used back home was a Treo, and I fell in love with the front-facing keyboard. Unfortunately they don't have an Android phone like that that I can use on my network back home yet, but as soon as I realized I was going to be here for most of the year, I picked up a Droid Pro, and I've never regretted it. It's not perfect (read about the random reboots), but it's stable for the most part, and the wonderful form factor makes up for any minor faults.
Really? I feel that the internet here was pretty nice... I was using an HTC Touch Diamond2 on T-Mobile US last year and it just wouldnt switch into 3G due to band indifferences. It works on the EU networks like a charm though.. well it did I should say, HTC has no decided to charge me 220GBP to fix Newton rings on the touch screen which should be covered under warranty! I am very very annoyed with them; I was a loyal HTC customer for years.
Well not anymore, I ordered the Droid Pro activated and unlocked off Ebay for about 180GBP, your loss HTC. Have a look in my other thread by the way, Motorola just announced a EU version of the Droid Pro - untouched hardware! I would be very very interested in the ROM it comes with ... ) Might just help you with your reception on 3!

Maybe it's just the area that I'm in, but we'll see.
I will take a look at the other thread.
no 3G data on my Droid Pro on O2 Uk

Mine has been fine. I used it for a while on T-Mobile, and I was able to pick up 3G or HSPA pretty much everywhere. I'm on 3 now, but I'm thinking about going back to T-Mobile because the 3 signal seems to cut out randomly, and I can't seem to access the internet very much. I went with 3 because they're the only ones that let you use up to 1GB, but what's the point, if you can't access it anyway?

Have you set up the APN properly? I know I had to set up the APN when I switched to 3. I've never tried O2, so I don't know for sure, but that's the only guess that I've got.
Try the APN settings in this post:

Or, you can try entering your number on their website and seeing if they provide any suggestions for the settings:

Untouched indeed

I would also welcome an untouched ROM - I think with imported phones from the states the lock on the band limits the connection we get here in the UK with our unlocked phones.
My Droid Pro arrived today and I can confirm that it picks up 3G like a charm on the T-Mobile/Virgin UK lines. Reception is fairly good too, was never really strong where I live anyways but still quite speedy. So far now problems with any cut-outs, freezing etc... really stable. Did an OTA update as soon as I turned it on.
The seller fortunately supplied me with the original unlock code by verizon and it was pretty much just popping my card in, entering the code and boom it was ready to go.
Make sure when you want to import a Droid Pro into Europe:
* the seller is in good standing with Verizon
* the phone is not listed as having a bad ESN (impossible to activate!)
* asking the seller to activate it for you before it ships (so you can actually unlock it!)
* in my case, my seller was even kind enough to phone up Verizon for an unlock code, saves u the work of buying one.
Also, as in recent developments, Verizon seems to change the unlock codes OTA that makes it sometimes completey impossible to unlock it with one that u got of the internet, just warning you to consider taking the safe way!
The ESN doesn't matter so much if you're never going to go to the U.S. and use it, but a clean ESN is always better.
It really does suck that Verizon started doing the OTA code change thing. I'm glad I got mine and unlocked it before that started happening.
Yea but if the droid pro has a bad ESN means u can never get it activated, not even on Verizon in the US... I have seen some ways to get around it, but it doesnt really seem proven yet how reliable that is, e.g after an OTA update? Regardless, to have the least trouble getting it over here, recommendation should be to go for an activated w/ orignial verizon unlock code.
Thinking of selling mine
I may be getting a company phone so I might be selling mine.
I'm based in the UK.
Phone is unlocked and comes with extended battery, screen protectors, box etc, and is in EXCELLENT condition.
Asking £300 - meet in person preferred. Based in Birmingham, UK.
Please get in touch if you're interested.
Hi,
I have a Droid Pro in the UK on T-mobile and i find that although i get signal and 3G android only ever displays 1bar signal but under system prefs the signal is strong, apps sometimes say network error. over at the droid forums they have noticed this to be an issue with no fix.
Thanks
