Europe to America carriers? - HD2 General

Hi guys,
I am going on holiday to America, and I will be bringing my HD2 on the vodafone UK carrier with me. My question is, will I be able to stick another sim card in it? I am running a custom rom, but it is not unlocked or anything. Does this mean I must unlock my phone and then I will be able to stick a sim in it?
Sorry if this is a very easy question, any help will be muchly appreciated. I will be in an area with poor AT&T signal, but good Sprint and Verizon if that helps.
Cheers,
Thazandril.

Most phones from Europe are unlocked and use other carrier SIM cards.
I am assuming you are using a HTC HD2 bought from Vodafone. Try using another carrier's SIM card in your HD2, just plug in a friend's SIM card that is not Vodafone and see if it works on your HD2.
The HTC HD2 can be used in USA/Canada to make and receive calls as well as SMS. Basically anything related to GSM can be used. However, for HSPA or 3G, it will not be usable.
USA uses (AWS) 1700MHz / 1900MHz for HSPA, however Europe uses 2100MHz for HSPA. The HTC HD2 European version does not support 1700MHz or 1900MHz HSPA. You will be able to use EDGE though.

HD2 work on ATT 3G

Does the current HD2 that one can buy from various sources work on the ATT 3G network with a current ATT SIM card?
No, You will not get 3G. the current phones do not have the 850MHZ that ATT uses for 3G.
You have to wait till mid to end of this month when the phone is out with the 850MHZ.
Where is this info from? if this is true I will certainly be getting the hd2. Will it be 850/1900?
The phone will have 850MHZ.
I have been told it will should be out mid to end of this month in Australia.
I bought my HD from there and will be buying the HD2 as soon as it is out.

From HTC australia. It'll come out for the Telstra's NextG network which runs on 850/2100. Since AT&T is overhauling their 1900mhz tower for the much faster 850mhz, the 850/2100 Telstra version is very ideal.
i'm kinda afriad of buying the HTC HD2 that will come to the US in the Q1 of 2010.
I have one question about it ,,, if i bought it " US HD2 " ,, is it going to work outside the US and work with other carrier like the iPhone for example?

Ok let's clear some things up. The "US HD2" is the T-Mobile version. T-MOBILE. What does this mean? If you're with AT&T and bought the "US HD2"/TMobile version, you can talk but will be limited to EDGE for data...no 3G. The HD2 is a quadband phone so you can use it to talk all over the world. Notice that i bold only the word talk? You won't be able to get 3G outside of the US unless the country/carrier you're visiting has 1700/2100 UMTS/3G band (which most don't). So if you're visiting other countries, you can talk all you want, but will more than likely stuck with EDGE for data. Period.
So let's recap:
1) "US HD2" = T-Mobile USA version
2) Telstra NextG HD2 (australian) = compatible with AT&T 3G
3) HD2 is a quadband phone for voice. You can talk on pretty much any country.
4) HD2 is a dualband phone for UMTS/3G/data. You will be stuck with EDGE unless you have the correct band.
5) Tmobile sucks
6) ?????
7) PROFIT!

so if i bought from Telstra NextG, i can work with At&t 3G using at$t? and also TALKING if i'm using other carer like T-Mobile?

Not at the same time. To use a carrier's service (data or voice) you need a sim from that carrier. So to use at&t data you need an at&t sim; to use T-mo voice you need a T-mo sim. The HD2 is not a dual-sim phone, so you can only have one sim installed at a time, and therefore can only be using either at&t or T-mobile at any given time. You can swap sims if the phone is unlocked to use the other carrier's services. I have no idea if the Telstra HD2 will be unlocked or is unlockable...maybe someone who is using a Telstra HD in the USA can respond to that issue.
Hope this helps.
so i take it that T-mo and ATT use different frequencies for their 3g?

Yep,
T-mobile use 1700MHz 3G frequency in the USA when most of 3G compatible devices (at&t) run on 850/1900MHz 3G/HSDPA freqencies
Hi,
I am a new user and I hope I am in the right place.
I just came back from Sydney Australia, and while I was there I bought teh HTC HD2 phone. WHen I got it it had all the Telstra crap on it and It was useless for me since I have t-mobile.
After I bought, I updated the ROM to RUU_Leo_HTC_WWE_1.66.405.2_Radio_Signed_15.30.50.07U_2.06.51.07_Ship.exe
I had to use HSPL but I got it to work.
I just arrived to New York today and I could not wait to turn on the phone and see it in action. To my dispointment, I could not get 3G on it. The band and network are set to AUTO. The only thing I get is Edge.
I tried all manual bands and no luck
So then I tried to update the ROM to LEO_2.02.531.14_WWE_B28223\LEO_2.02.531.14_WWE_B28223
But it does not seem to work, no home screen just HTC and the windows start icon, phone and contacts appear on the bottom. Dont know whats wrong?? but perhaps some can shed some light.
Going back to ROM to RUU_Leo_HTC_WWE_1.66.405.2_Radio_Signed_15.30.50.07U_2.06.51.07_Ship.exe for now.
Just want to know if I am on the right path?? Will this phone I bought work with t-mobile 3g service?
and what ROM is the best for this HTC HD2 phone and how can I get it?
Any tips would be awesome !
Thanks

That phone will not work with US T-Mobile. Sell it on ebay and wait for the US T-Mo HD2.
T-Mobile uses the weird 1700/2100 UTMS bands in the US, and pretty much only phones made specifically for it will work.
Crap'po'la
I was afraid of that. so I can use it, just wont get 3G
So no ROMS would help right?
Is there A ROM that is better then what I have now? I have RUU_Leo_HTC_WWE_1.66.405.2_Radio_Signed_15.30.50.07U_2.06.51.07_Ship.exe
Thanks
hey richsark ill take it off your hands
Hi, well... whats the offer? on a 3 day old phone??
pmed........

Hi, The phone I bought straight from the Telstra shop was unlocked. I did put my SIM in it and it registers as TMobile but no 3G. ( I did this in the States) Over there in Sydney with my Tmobile SIM it was 3G !
My guess is the bands are not compatible. I am stuck with Edge I guess... unless there is a way to make it work
Thanks
TMobile will have a roaming agreement with Telstra which means while in Australia you will have connected to the Telstra 3G network using the 850MHz frequency, but as a "visitor". Once back in the US the TMobile network uses 1700MHz which the Telstra version of the HD2 won't work with.
I travel a fair bit to the US and UK for work so prior to the HD2 I had a 850/1900/2100 UMTS phone which covered me for AT&T in the US. Now that AT&T are moving to use 850 more widely the lack of 1900 won't be a problem and 2100 is used widely in the UK and Europe.

HTC HD2 3G Not Detected!!!!!

Hello if someone could help me with my 3G connection inquiry, I would greatly appreciate it.
I bought this phone unlocked from Hong Kong and brought it back to Canada. But the 3G connection through Rogers won't work. I am able to connect to edge (When i pop in my sisters sim card which has a data plan, as my sim card currently does not have a data plan).
I talked to Rogers and they said that everything is compatable (After mentioning the phone frequencies and speed capabilities) and that the only reason 3G isnt working is that I have not configured my phone properly for 3G and at this moment it is configured for 2G (Edge).
I then contacted HTC and they said the reason was because "for the Rogers network, their 3G signal is operated on the 850/1900 MHZ band and the Touch HD2 operates on the 900/2100 MHZ band." Could this be the reason? Will i never taste the pleasures of a 3G connection?
PLEASE HELP!!
since you have bought it in hongkong most probably you have the asian version. It comes with 900/2100 MHZ bands and as you mentioned ROger needs 850/1900 frequency.
You could also get Telstra version from Australia and unlock it as it has 850/1900 frquency so that you could get 3g. But not possible on the one you already have.
Yea its the frequencies. When I take my phones abroad, I always check what frequencies the country has. If the frequencies don't match, the phone won't work in terms of placing calls, 3G etc.
is there a way to unlock ?

There is no software that can get around this "problem"
It is purely a hardware limitation.
perhaps with flashing radio but i'm not shure

Nope, it still will not support the correct bands that he needs
This is a completely hardware related problem

PLS HELP! NO reception on TMOUS but FULL reception with european version

btw..i did read alot on the other forums about this..but nothing as bad
hi everybody, a friend of mine got a us tmobile version of the hd2 after he saw how cool my european hd2 is. (switched from an iphone )
so..we get no reception anytime the phone is inside a building...have to run on the balcony to make a call. outside it can get full signal but as soon as you enter building..NOTHING!
i flashed all possible radios and several different roms with ABSOLUTELY NO IMPROVEMENT.
switched different carriers..tried bell and fido which use different networks.
oh..and btw...when i put the tmous and european version side by side..one gets no signal and the other one..full bars.
also tried android :S..still nothing
i`m really out of ideas..should we send it back??
you might want to unlock the t-mo version 1st, but a better question; where are you using them?
it`s been already unlocked..using it in montreal canada on two of our major networks..fido and telus..which work really well on my european version

Telus isn't GSM... it's CDMA
It should work on fido, I was using it with my T-mo HD2 in Ontario.
Try disabling/enabling 3G. Also, try to get a newer sim card from fido. (try a friend's first)
But I think the problems comes from the frequency bands...
Fido/Rogers use the 1900/850 Band. The american phones usually are compatible with the 850 only. (I think) the T-mo HD2 has the 1800 and 850 bands.
So you might have a weak signals indoors because of that. Try rogers network, you might get better coverage.
Also, did you try swapping the sim cards between the 2 HD2s?

Bringing my hd2 to Europe...

Hi all,
I'm planning on going to Europe, specifically Amsterdam and Sweden, next year. Will my HD2 work in Europe? With data? (I realize I will have to buy a plan with an operator over there)
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
Yes it will work with any GSM provider worldwide, so long as you SIM unlock it. Todo so, either call T-Mobile if you are a customer, or go online and find a site that SIM does SIM unlocks, such as http://www.htcunlock.com and pay them to do it(around 15USD). And as far as data is concerned, you will get EDGE and GPRS only in Europe with the TMO US HD2 as the 3G bands are different.
Ah good My phone is already unlocked so I'm straight on that front. Going without 3G is no problem, I'm glad it'll work with EDGE.
thanks for the reply!
Correction: the TMOUS HD2 will work on 3G in Europe.
HTC clearly says 1700/2100. 2100 is Band I for Europe. 1700 is Band IV for T-Mobile.

[Q] Toronto's Bell Carrier

My friend was testing out my phone and decided to put his Bell sim card into my "unlocked" T-Mobile HD2. The problem we couldn't figure out was why the phone wouldn't get any signal what so ever and even configured my phone to Bell Mobility settings.
I use Energy's Rom and changed some of the Band/Network setting but that didn't seem to work.
Any suggestions?
Tmo HD2 uses normal gsm and 1700/2100 hsdpa aka aws, bell does not support that. Wind mobile uses aws (which is what i am using with my hd2) all though you should get a roaming signal.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
I know in Energy's Rom there is an option to change the 3G bands from like 850+1900 and stuff, shouldn't that work?
removed.
Is that Bell SIM card for a prepaid account? If so that's why it doesn't work. Prepaid cell services don't work the same way as regular ones, and have to use specially configured devices in order to gain a signal.
Thanks for the replies! Yes i think the Bell Sim Card is a prepaid account one. The probably explains the problems we were having.
What are some carriers that are confirmed to work with the T-Mobile HTC HD2? Rogers, Fido?, Wind?, Mobilicity?
Also want to know if i'm using Rogers would the 3G capability work. I am currently using Energy's Rom.
Roger's Wind and Mobilicity are the ones that I know for sure should work. I dunno about Fido, but basically any GSM service around the world that DOESN'T use prepaid SIM cards should work with an unlocked HD2, or any device for that matter. And as far as Roger's 3G capability I don't know, what bands does Roger's use for 3G access? The TMO US HD2 uses AWS 1700/2100.
I believe rogers uses 850/1900. Not too sure but thats what i heard. Theres an option on the rom i flashed to enable 850+1900 umts or something. Im guess that would work. Cause i know if you use the stock rom that came with the T-Mobile, you the 3G doesn't work since its like 1700/2100.

The rom will not enable 850 or 1900 umts. Ask any at&t subscriber trying to use a tmo hd2 on their network and trying to use 3g. Won't happen. If your looking for 3g, you need aws (and canada does have one, i don't remember who they are at the moment) or 2100mhz 3g/umts. gsm will work with a lot more bands.

your wrong the Prepaid part, most prepaid cards do work like At&t, some dont work if they are like the ones sold by wallmart, but ANy GSM Sim card should work. i tried it on AT&T, VODAFONE AND AIRTEL

yeah but only If Rogers supports 2100 cuz i dont think they do but i could be wrong

Won't work. Bell (and Telus, Virgin, Koodo, Solo) only has 850/1900 HSPA... which this phone doesn't.
Wind, Mobilicity, Videotron have 1700 AWS so this phone will work with them, ditto for Rogers and Fido but in 2G mode only (since they have 850/1900 GSM)
