Homescreen quicklink fonts look bad - HD2 General

How come the fonts on the quicklink names look so bad? Is there any way to get them to look better?

My friend has the Droid Incredible with a very similar HCT Sense home screen but the Icons and weather text looks much better. The fonts on HD2 look like they are being resized and not at their default size.

turn on cleartype

The HCT Sense home screen and or Windows Mobile has a cleartype setting? Do tell...
It already looks blurry and that's what cleartype does right? I've removed it from Windows 7 and Internet Explorer as it gives me a headache.

cleartype stops it looking pixely/grainy. works well on our screen
It can be found at
settings - menu - all settings - system - screen - cleartype tab.
if you cant find the screen settings ( i think they were off by default in the tmous rom) you can turn it on by creating the reg key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GDI\CLEARTYPE
thats all key, there doesnt need to be any values of any type in there. If that key exists, cleartype is on.

I had just found this and it makes it look diferent but still pixely/grainy:
"By default, the cleartype has been disabled in HD2 ROM. Add this to the registry \HKLM\System\GDI\ClearType\ClearType as DWord Value is 1 '
"You can additionally enable cleartype in landscape mode by setting the following key to 0 though: HKLM/System/GDI/ClearTypeSettings/OffOnRotation '

All you have to do is go to the registry. Edit hklm\ControlPanel\Pen\ ... Change the value of hide from 1 to 0. Save and reboot the phone. Then go to settings/all settings/screen and on the Clear type tab choose enable. Reboot and you'll see the fonts the way you want to now.
That was my biggest gripe with the phone for sure.

Reg Tweak FILES: Post/Get them here

Let's start a thread of all the reg tweaks ppl have come up with. If they are saved as .reg files (to an SD), we can install them with a mere double-click by using TRE (options>associate), and anyone can contribute to this post WITHOUT having to build .cab files! Why is this kewl; cos when u hard reset it's a real ball-ache to go back into all the forums to find the tweaks u applied and to navigate thro TRE to re-apply them all. This applies particuarly to settings (Owner info etc). Over and above, we are no longer beholden to tweak shareware, but have full and instant control over our settings.
Each tweak should have 2 reg files; Apply the tweak, and remove the tweak (if possible). In this manner, we can have a directory of reg files, and can turn on and off tweaks with a simple d.click.
Attached is a basic set I've compiled. Please let everyone know if any are a problem (ie perhaps whole key gets replaced and overrides something u have already changed). Files described below:
[*]Reg Date_In_Titlebar ON.reg
Adds the date to the title bar, with format according to your short-date format under settiings>regional (or found manually changed in another Tweak I'll cover later). I do NOT have a .reg file that will undo (ie delete) this new key, but it's easy to see what key is being added so u can delete it. <Credit: Well known PPC tweak - I probably learnt from toenailed>
Can someone please find out where we can change the font for this - it's a horrible bold font that doesn't fit in the space available?
[*]Reg Font_Menu_+_Pop_700 ON.reg
Change menus and popups to a smaller font. Nice size, makes VGA look more VGA-like, yet not so small that it fails cleartype nor looks daft. Requires a reset. <Credit: Well known PPC tweak - I probably learnt from toenailed>
[*]Reg Font_Menu_+_Pop_900 DEFAULT.reg
Reset above change to default of 900
[*]Reg Font_System_700 ON.reg
Changes system font to 2 pts smaller. I find that dialog boxes with radio buttons got a bit wierd, and you don;t get much more screen estate height cos of icon sizes staying the same in file lists, so I don't bother with this tweak. Requires a reset. <Credit: Well known PPC tweak - I probably learnt from toenailed>
[*]Reg Font_System_900 DEFAULT.reg
Turn above off
[*]Reg GPRS_+_3G_Always _On DEFAULT.reg
Awesome tweak to make sure ur phone connects to GPRS/3G and stays there. However, you'll want to switch this off overnight etc, which is the main reason I created this post and these reg files. NOTE: you will absolutely HAVE to replace the "MTN SA Web" bit with the name of your connection which you will find in this key using TRE
<Credit: BrettS http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=30277>
[*]Reg GPRS_+_3G_Always _On ON.reg
Turn off the above. Remember to change connection name in file
[*]Reg PIE_Homepage_Default.reg
When u press the E (explorer) keyboard key u go to clubimate homepage - annoying. This resets that hard button to whatever u want (current reg file is windows\default.htm)
<Credit: I forget, someone on clubimate forums>
[*]Reg TerminalServices_Cache_Larger DEFAULT.reg
AWESOME improvement in Terminal Services client horrible black blocks. Increases cache sizez - I did not notice an increase in traffic/cost
<Credit: Carnivor from MS KB http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=29996>
[*]Reg TerminalServices_Cache_Larger ON.reg
Turns above off
More coming as I go thro the wiki and toenailed tweak posts and extract usefull ones for us lonely Universal users...
can you add the actual keys to here?
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Universal_Registry
cos of this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=30396
Doh! That post came up after I started this thread.
Still this thread is useful for the actual .reg files to same n00bies some time (and to save me time too). I'll make sure everything here is duplicated there tho.
Here are a few more .reg files:
Several versions of date_in_title_bar (covered above)
Hide_Screen_Rotation icon
Hide that icon that allows u to rotate screen - but JJ does it automatically so Icon is not so necessary
Regional_settings
These are for me - u should edit file in text editor to customise 4 yourself. Best part is my short date format that keeps date in title bar small and visible
Ringtone_settings
Customise as above
Screen_Speed_Glyph_Cache
Double your screen cache. COsts a LITTLE memory, and improves screen size
Screen_font_'smaller'
Set screen font size to "smaller". This can be changed in "settings"m and I only include it here in line with my suggestion that we have a collection of files to run quickly on reset. You may want to customise as above
SIP_Settings. Ditto
All in updated zip file.
I would really appreciate if anyone can find a way to get rid of the Last Call in the dialer screen... I know its somewhere hidden in Registry, but I dont seems to be finding a way to get tru it...
Having the Last Dialed No. showing rite up on the Dialer Screen is really bothering and if you happened to press the phone button by mistake twice there we go the last dialed no. has been dialed already for you....
Bump: no-one contributing to this learning?
haven't found anything else worth posting yet m8, u got the best ones already
craigiecraigie4: Thanks for these - great idea!
I have a suggestion:
HKCU/ControlPanel/Backlight sets the backlight duration for the keyboard (in seconds). It's available through the control panel, but I like it set to more than the CP maximum of 10 seconds. Sorry - I don't know how to create a reg file.
To reset, choose another value in the backlight control panel applet.
Don't have any others to add though
Found another one:
Change the width of the vertical scroll bar and the height of the horizontal scroll bar so they take less room on the screen:
HKLM\System\GWE
Change cxVScr to (say) 10 to make vertical scrollbar narrower. Default value is 14
Change cyHScr to (say) 10 to make horizontal scrollbar narrower. Default value is 14
This change affects various scroll options in the system including the up/down arrows in selection boxes. 10 is a nice size.
This one is in this forum:

Nice one dude. I can't make the .reg file cos I can only create reg files of the entire key, and there are too many other things under GWE that users may have changed.
Internet Explorer
Somewhere in those forums I found the IE reg hack to make mine 5.5, this helps connecting to my bank account and viewing other secured sites.
read this somewhere
To change the ability to receive files via Bluetooth (OBEX)
The setting is at 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Obex'
The 'IsEnabled' DWORD value should be set to '1' to enable OBEX and '0' to disable OBEX.
For example, to enable the ability to receive fles via Bluetooth
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Obex\IsEnabled = 1
says receive so i dont know about send, try it!! might be it
But apparently now this is the same feature as the receive incoming beams setting in connections.
Yes, I know that's not free but 90% of all this hacks have been included in Tweaks2K2. And the other 10% are about to be included
Yeah, true. Idea of this thread was to have a facility whereby a hard reset can be quickly restored to a working device - install a few basic apps, run the .reg files, and there u go. Takes me about half an hour from HR thro to up and running perfectly.

With your .reg files as inspiration I'm just about getting there in the same way. I've written down all the steps and I just run through them. I've done this since I had my XDA2 and it makes a hard reset so much less traumatic:
Code:
Hard reset. Wait for Today screen then soft reset.
Connect cable to ActiveSync. Set up guest connection.
Turn off beams, error reporting
Set basic clock accuracy
Copy Step 1 files to root of PPC [These are the CABs for the programs I install]
Run CABs. Leave O2 Connections CAB. Put gps.CAB and PIMAddin onto storage card
Run TRE registry editor. Associate .reg files to TRE
Open the .reg file [This applies my registry settings. See below]
Run O2 connections CAB
Copy all Step 2 files to root of PPC [This adds shortcuts to StorageCard-installed programs to my Start Menu and gives me my freeware email client and PZP icons and profiles]
Run SDK Certs CAB
Run OzVGA. Change all fonts to same size as qVGA
PPC: edit registry: browse to HKLM\ControlPanel\GPS Settings. Delete the DWORD marked "hide"
CPL > Personal > Buttons: match Button 2 to [Task switcher], Button 4 to <Rotate Screen>; Set button lock
CPL > Personal > Menus: ActiveSync, File Explorer, Internet Explorer, nPOPw, Pocket Informant, Task Manager, TomTom Navigator
CPL > Personal > Owner: set owner information
CPL > Personal > Phone: change band to GSM
CPL > Personal > Today: set items to Date, PZP, PocketPlus, PocketBreeze, Messaging; set theme to Windows Default
CPL > System > Clock: Show time on all screens
CPL > System > Regional: Set locale to UK
CPL > Connections > GPS: set program port COM0
Soft reset
Set password for PPC
PC: backup previously sync'ed files folder
PC ActiveSync: delete previous partnership. Don't delete sync'ed files folder
CPL > System > About: Set DeviceID = XDAExec
Connect PPC and PC with cable
Sync only Contacts, Calendar (all), Tasks, Favourites
Sync files. Replace the items on the device
PocketBreeze: import settings
PocketPlus: import settings
PocketInformant: run and let it fanny about
PocketWeather (on PocketBreeze tab): import settings
Run ListPro. Enter registration code
Disconnect from PC
Set up phone speed dials
Set up voicedial tags
Set up ActiveSync via Bluetooth to Workstation
Set up bond to headset
Set up bond to GPS thingy. Choose Serial Port as profile
Start TomTom Navigator. Run through startup.
InternetExplorer: sort out view settings. Set default page to about:blank
Choose Transcriber input method. Import settings file
This is my .reg file that does almost everything I need done in one step:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ControlPanel\GPS Settings]
"Group"=dword:00000002
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Backlight]
"QKeyLedTimeout"=dword:0000001e
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client]
"Keyboard Layout"="00000409"
"BitmapPersistCacheSize"=dword:00000001
"BitmapCacheSize"=dword:00000015
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GDI\GLYPHCACHE]
"limit"=dword:00004000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\nls\overrides]
"SSDte"="d/M "
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\OEM\KEYBD]
"PieHomePage"="about:blank"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell]
"TBOpt"=hex:\
13,00,00,00
It makes a massive difference using commercial software that has a reliable import/export process for the settings and this, IMHO, is usually the biggest difference between paid-for software and freeware alternatives.

Landscape Mode

Probably because of an incompatibility with the new TouchFlo interface, HTC has disabled manual switching to landscape mode on the Jade. This in itself is already a disadvantage. It is particularly bad for Opera because the very useful landscape option is now also absent from its context menu. The good news is: There is an easy way out: Just unlock the registry and change
"HKLM\System\GDI\Rotation\HideOrientationUI" from "1" to "0"
and you can rotate to your hearts delight. The respective button is now available in "Settings - Screen" - and the option is also available in Opera's context menu! Note, however, that whenever you go back to TouchFlo's today screen it will rotate back to vertical. If you want to run a program in landscape it is thus best to first start the program and then use the start button access "Settings - Screen". In Opera, however, this is not necessary.
Thanks for this Information!
hi there,
thanks for this new hack- you can also set a shortcut for orientation with sktools which you then can start from the launcher
cheers
Landscape Mode and writing messages
Hi everybody,
i tried this setting for landscape mode and it is working well.
But only thing i noticed. If i want to try a message in landscape mode, the keyboard is not displayed correctly - some letters are missing.
Does anybody have the same issue?
thx
simon
It's weird that landscape mode exists in Opera 8.65 without that hack in registry, but in Opera 9 does not Any ideas?
I say that because this mode is very useful for internet browsing, not so in other applications.
I have the same problem with the keyboard in landscape mode, maybe this can be resolved by installing another on screen keyboard?

hi, you first need a registry editor. i use phm regedit, but if u search you'll find also other program that do the same. install it on jade, run and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GDI\Rotation\ (tapping the "+" on the left of the voice, and finally tapping "rotation"), you'll find 4 voices, tap on HideOrientationUI, and set on "value data" = "0" instead of "1". tap ok, exit the program, softreset et voilĂ ! now you can find the button on settings\system\display.

Thanks for your answer IL_mante, its works perfect for my HTC VIVA.
Also use:
"HKLM\System\GDI\ClearTypeSettings\OffOnRotation" from "1" to "0"
to keep your text looking pretty.

my phone's screen always in vertical mode. but when i want to use horizontal screen to type sms, i will use QuickMenu to change screen from H-V. simple and no registry tweak at all. it is alright for me even though the screen will revert back to horizontal mode when it goes back to home screen.

After enabling rotation in the registry, you can also assign long-press of left hardware button to rotate the screen...
Just go to Start>Settings>Personal>Buttons... Just select <Rotate Screen> from the choices for Button 1...
hi i enabled landscape in registry, assigned to long press green button, works well to this point. problem is that when in landscape, keyboard doesnt show up... htc one, nor FingerKeyboard i installed...
when in portrait, kezboard shows up, i switch to landscape and it's gone...
htc's full qwerty keyboard wasn't showing landscape from the beginning, always portrait only...
another problem, when i switch to lanscape when in TotalCommander, screen reverts back to portrait immediately... just like in manila.
any suggestions?
is there any portrait fullscreen keyboard?
EDIT: problem solved. after uninstalling FingerKeyboard from Storage, everything works ok... seems that system tools is better to keep in main memory

Rotate screen possible without slideout ?

Hello everyone,
i've been trying several roms since few days.. and love them all
appreciate all the work you guys do, but i have this one little thing that i wish i had.
Why do i need to use the keyboard to go to landscape? is there no other option?
(i cant seem to find it..)
So i would like my screen to always rotate in every app when i rotate the phone.. (g-sensor rotate is on, but hardly ever works auto) OR have a key or app that i can use that overrules the sensor and just let me choose landscape mode.
Because the auto rotate doesnt seem to do that for most programs untill you slide the keyboard out. but i dont need my keyboard...
examples: i like tomtom in landscape, but not with the keyboard slide out!
(that way it wont fit in my carkit..)
and i want to be able to rotate a movie or tekst message whenever i want to..
etc etc.. (with the g-sensor OR some key or APP or something else)
or is the answer: its impossible? can hardly believe that, because it seems so easy to do.
thanks for any help
Search for ChangeScreen or G-Config.
Or set Send Key to rotate manually:
HKLM/System/GDI/Rotation change the "HideOrientationUI" from 1 to 0
Now you van remap the Send Key to do this on long press. [FONT=&quot][/FONT]
use this cab to rotate TF3d with out the keyboard
than use the g config app to add other programs to the rotate list, once you add the cab or any program using g config you have to soft reset for them to work
edit i have tom tom and adding it to g config app work great in landscape
very very nice
works like a charm with not much lag.
thank you.
just to let you know what i found as my final solution (for now) after lots of trying different roms:
i read somewhere here, (cant find it anymore) about setting the hardware "back" key to rotate screen on double click...
so no auto rotating anymore, only when i want to, with this tool:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=554240
Together with the ROM:
Phoenix 2 Sense 2.1 EnergyROM_28011_RHODIUM_07.Dec.2009_Standard.rar
it all works like a charm.. manila rotates very quick and everything else.
rom has start button on bottom and standard 4 columns in programs, nice agenda in landscape, yes i like this one
coreplayer works good.. no accidental rotates etc
i can just lay in bed and watch my favorite movie without troubles.
tomtom in widescreen in my car etc etc
thank you all for this superb forum
Try these Registry Settings
1. HKCU\Software\HTC\Manila -> add a new String Value with the name "EnableLandscape" and the value "true" (both without "")
2. HKCU\Software\HTC\HTCSENSOR\GSensor\ModuleName -> add a new String Value with the name "TF3D" and the value "\Windows\manila.exe" (both without "")
3. HKCU\Software\HTC\HTCSENSOR\GSensor\WhiteList -> add a new String Value: Name: "TF3D Value: "Manila" (both without "")
4. Change HKCU\Software\HTC\Manila DisableRotation value to 0 from 1.
5. Softreset
Search for flip_IT, found it in topaz forum, burried somewhere. It works awesome with WM6.5.x builds.
i used this clever little addin and made a shortcut in start menu n quicklaunch panel enjoy !
but as i found some programs will no look right when used in landscape mode.

Cleartype?

I've noticed that Cleartype doesn't seem to be enabled in some of the Mini applications, such as the Outlook message list. It's very noticable in a relatively low resolution device like this, if you compare for example Resco Explorer with and without Cleartype enabled. It used to be possible to universally enable it in Settings, but this doesn't seem to be there any more. Anyone any ideas on how to re-enable it?

A more detailed working solution to enable cleartype in mini is the following:
With a registry editor go to:
HKLM -> System -> GDI
new key:ClearType, then new DWORD in the key named ClearType, Dword data=1.
Reboot your device, done. Works fine on my mini
Thanks for this. The fonts still look really dreadful to me in eg. the Outlook message list, compared to devices with the same resolution - the 1-pixel wide letters just lack clarity. They seem to be using the application's Medium font, whereas if you view a message and change the font size up to Larger it's far clearer; using this size in the list would look much better. Maybe there's a hack to change the list font size?

It's a bit kludgy because I haven't installed a screengrabber (and I'm not sure there is a HVGA-compatible one available) but in the attached images, the first shows the message list, the second and third show the text inside the email viewer at Larger and Medium font sizes. Larger is far clearer, and uses up a negligible amount of extra space. It seems to me that the list view would look much better using the Larger font.
Edit: well I never, there's a setting in Manila Settings - Font to fix this! Couldn't find it in the standard WM settings though.
Sorry for my english. I was really interested HD mini but when i saw quality of fonts i could not belive that this is possible in new device for this price. Fonts in file explorer looks much worse then in my polaris. I was search for WM resolution supported and i think that the answer for this problem is simply. WM 6.5 does not support Hvga resolution, so it does not run in its native resolution. It is the same when you set for example resolution 800x600 on the monitor with native resolution 1024x768 - fonts look blurred not sharp. Only manila is made for HVGA so the main interface looks grate but when you go inside windows fonts looks awful. Only WM 7 will support HVGA.
It actually doesn't look at all bad with a slightly larger font, attached; just the default is rather poorly designed.
This is the original. I don't see any big differences
Enabling ClearType: how to enable the Screen control panel
Hi all,
ClearType can be enabled through the Screen control panel but HTC disabled it.
To enable the Screen control panel, one may use his preferred registry editor: go to "\HKLM\ControlPanel\Pen" then change the "Hide" key content from 1 to 0. After a device reboot, the Screen control panel is available under "Sense Settings tab > Menu > More > System".
After re-enabling ClearType, the text is really much more readable in MS applications such as EMail, Calendar, Contacts, Mobile Office, etc.
Hope this helps.
Excellent, much better; thanks!
great !!!!

Hi! It is possible to make even easier! Here to you a label! Simply through the file manager press a label, and receive adjustments cleartype!
wonderful solutions makes for a far better view!!
tnx so much!
A word of caution.
HD mini is one quirky WM device. If the cleartype does not bother you too much, or if it's not essential, better leave it as it is. The more you tinker with the unavailable settings, the more chances it could randomly produce unexpected behavior. Such as freeze and other stuffs.

HTC Mini Keyboard

Hi all
Sorry managed to find the setting
One other question. my fonts dont look sharp. I have been used to the HTC Diamond.
Is this because the screen or touch flo is better on the Diamond than the Mini?
Many kind thanks
Alex
Next time you might want to do a search for this. It's because Cleartype is no enable by default.
To enable it:
- ClearType can be enabled through the Screen control panel but HTC disabled it.
- To enable the Screen control panel, use a registry editor: go to "\HKLM\ControlPanel\Pen" then change the "Hide" key content from 1 to 0.
- After a device reboot, the Screen control panel is available under "Sense Settings tab > Menu > More > System".
- After re-enabling ClearType, the text is really much more readable in MS applications such as EMail, Calendar, Contacts, Mobile Office, etc.
