Best way to ensure no data charges when roaming? - HD2 General

I'm going to France from the UK this week and obviously don't want to be stung for any roaming data charges.
What's the best way to ensure this doesn't happen on the HD2?
Should I just flick the 'Data connection' in 'Comm Manager' to 'Off'? This won't just come on again by itself will it?
The only thing I have auto connecting via data is google sync emails/calendar/contacts anyway. Everything else like stocks, twitter, weather etc is set to manual (as far as I know).

There is an option (that I haven't used) in BsB Tweaks app. Press Menu (right softkey) and then 'Data Connections' and finally 'Off'.
I was in a situation like you few months back when travelling to the states, but I was on a HTC Touch Dual... Back then I used Advanced Config to switch off Data Connections just to be sure and that worked. I can't say if it'll work on HD2.
Active Sync lets you disable the connections when roaming in it's menu as well...
Hope this helps a little.

I'm using Nodata on my HD2 - works flawlessly.

+1 for nodata!

Nodata all the way.

Agree
NoData ... works ....

You don't need an extra application like Nodata.
Just go to All Settings --> Connections --> Connections --> Advanced --> Select Networks and select "My Work Network" from both drop down lists.
This ensures that the phone can only use WiFi.

But if you do need gprs/hsdpa - using nodata is a much shorter way.

Try this. Completely automated disabling and re-enabling!

Blocking Data On HD

I recently got the HD, but since I live in Canada I figured it wasn't worth it to get a data plan (Can only use EDGE and prices are outrageous). As such, I'm wondering if there are any apps or methods to block data.
I would still want to be able to use wifi for internet and such, but stop EDGE from working. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!
Goto the Comm Manager and turn Data Connection off? Don't know what that does to wifi which has a seperate on/off? That failing, could you not disable data from your operator?
what works for me is to set networks for automatic internet access to "company network":
Start - settings - connections tab - connections icon - extended tab - select networks - automatic internet access => set to company network
I have a german device so had to guess english names ... be warned.
if you make the change and try to update weather data you should get an error.
Set it back to your phone provider should make it connect (and charge you) again.
I called my carrier and asked for data transfer to be blocked.
Start - Settings - Connections
Tap the Connections icon
There you might see an entry for your mobile provider - in my case I see
"Vodafone Live"
- Add a new modem
- Edit my proxy server
- Manage existing connections
Tap 'Manage existing connections'
You will see a list of modems (in my case I see 'Vodafone Live')
Tab and hold the modem
Choose delete
Anyone tried MoDaCo's NoData utility?

dwnload tweaks 3.3. There is an option to disable one or al of your data connections.
You need to install compact framework 3.5 first (google it if unsure).

I need help to update weather

Sorry i am really a newbie, but how do i update the weather by using Wifi??because it is always automatically connected to GPRS for the update and there is data charge.....help is appreciated...
My Jade uses, if available, WiFi. Did you set up your WiFi with encryption key etc properly on your Jade? Should use this, if activated...

Hai Faiz
Connect with ActivSync. That will do the trick.
You could use nodata to block gprs, just see your other thread about GoogleMaps.
And make sure your connections are set up properly....
start -> settings -> connections (tab) -> connections -> advanced (tab) -> select networks -> both options should be set to 'my work network'.
Go back to connections tab -> advanced network -> disable HSDPA
go to text service tab(or sms tab) -> text message through GSM
Now you've disabled all GPRS data traffic, set up your wifi connection and you should be good to go.
Mine doesn't seem to like wifi networks. It connects to them ok but then email and opera won't work.
If I connect via my service provider using 3G everything works fine.
I don't mind this as my contract includes 500mb of data per month and I don't use it online that much as I still find it easier using a PC if I'm at home or in the office.
I also find that if I have unique switched on to search for wifi networks it kills the battery life so I don't have it enabled.
I'm sure you will be able to get it to work, I just haven't botherd due to the reasons above.

[SOLVED] "My Location" weather only works via WIFI

Is there any reason why I can only update my location when connected through WIFI? Is there a workaround?
[Solved]
Refer to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5902752&postcount=11
There's already a lot of discussion on the "my location" feature.
You should think yourself lucky - mine's NEVER worked, over 2G, 3G, HSDPA or WiFi. It simply doesn't work for me.
Mine was working fine over all mediums until I installed "Touch X Disconnect data after E-mail check" tweak. Now, even after uninstalling it, I still cannot update either email or weather except over WIFI! I think a hardreset is in order here...
I previously had the Touch HD and thought this problem was just a compatibilty issue from using a LEO rom.

Same here mate. I'm very patiently waiting for a workround or fix for this issue. I've never even seen it working! lol
mine works fine anywhere except my home town, that's even more of a kick in the pants as far as i'm concerned. On O2 in the SW. Rivets
Shouldnt this be working :S?

I am in the US on ATT can only use edge, works all the time on edge and wifi, in fact I am amazed how fast it works
any updates on a possible fix for this? Has anyone tried something that worked?
I'm using 2.08 radio with miri 7.0 and I still can't get my location to work over 3g or gprs. It works fine over wifi.
Still broken with CleanEX 0.53 and 2.09 radio
Comm Manager (wireless controls on settings tab) -> Menu -> Connections -> Manage existing connections -> Proxy settings -> untick "This network uses a proxy server to connect to the internet"
Try updating from the weather tab. Should work after that.
From my experience, it's also a hit and a miss based on location, rather than settings. I can update weather at my work (about 40 miles from home) no problem, over wifi, 3g etc. I can add a location near my home town, and update that no problem at all, over any connection, however when I am home, I am unable to update my location weather.
I think it must be an issue with location, the town I live in is quite small, but the place I work, is a lot larger.
Works to a fashion!
Mine seems to work ok, but when I am in some parts of Derby (East Mids), it says I am in Southall!! Same on my Old Man's Vodafone HD2.
Mine: 1.43 Stock o2 ROM
Pops: 1.66 Vodafone Updated ROM

I've been searching for this solution to update weather via wifi! But for your solution, i have unticked "This network uses a proxy server to connect to the internet"
but how to update weather tab? When i go "menu" --> "Weather Settings" --> tick "Download data automatically" and it prompted me, i will be extra charge from internet service provider. and that will switch on my data connection again... headache~~

How to completely turn off data services?

Soooo i have been playing with my HD2 too much and now my mobile internet usage is close to my monthly limit.
I switched off weather, facebook & microsoft exchange active sync and switched off data services to Off in wireless controls under settings. But somehow the phone is still initializing data connection and have data coming in/out.
Is there anyway to turn off data services completely??
There is an answer for this one (one of the possible ways) on HTC official suport page under FAQ. Sorry but i can't post an external link due to spam prevention.
Kill one letter from your providers accessname. Like vodafone.de = vodafone.d If you need the access later, add the letter again.

That will give you error messages all the time though.
Go:
Windows Key
Settings
Wireless Controls
Menu (at the bottom right)
Connections
Advanced (Tab)
Select Networks (Button)
Then change "Programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using:" to "My Work Network"
or try this one wich is working perfectly for me
go to Settings - Wireless Controls-[put 3G and Data Connection Off]
then open BsB Tweaks-Menu-Data Connection-Tick Disable in here
then restart the phone and you never use data again appart of you WiFi

Deactivate data connection on HD2

On my Diamond, I had a handy little application called NoData which deactivated data connections so that I didn't get charged for using mobile internet by mistake.
Is there any way to do the same thing on the HD2?
Thx.
I am also looking for an app that can do this.
I'm off abroad in a couple of weeks and I am already having nightmares about the bill I may have when I return if I can't find a way to deactivate the data!

Just use the same app
Grtz,
Degake
there is a app out there called...................nodata
oh, are you sure it works on the HD2?
nodata works fine but i use bsb tweaks to disable data connections manually before crossing the border so i can enable it just in case
Since I have no data plan with my carrier i disable connections not referring to WIFI alltogether, I just go to Settings, connections, menu, connections, advanced, select network, and put "work network" (or something, I have it in italian) to both.

there is a vey simple way to deactivate the data connection: long press the on/off key and you will get a little menu: one of the menu items is deactivate data connection. Press it and it's done.

That terminates it, but it doesn't stop it coming back on when an app tries to use it.
Is there a reason that no-one has suggested airplane mode?
no cab needed, the answer is on the HTC site:
How do I disable my 3G/GPRS Data Connection?
Follow the steps below to ensure that your phone will never connect to a GPRS/3G Data Connection.
1. Go to Start > Settings > Menu > All Settings > Connections > Connections
2. Tap Add a new modem connection > then under Select a modem, select Celluar Line (GPRS) > Name the Connection "Offline" >Tap Next.
3. In the Access point name text box input "Offline" and tap Next.
4. On the next page tap Finish.
5. On the second Connections Menu, tap Manage existing connections and select "Offline" then click OK.
Re-enable the data connection if you want to connect to the internet via 3g/Edge.
1. From the home screen, slide to the Settings tab, Wireless Controls > Data Connection.
2. Select your Country and Operator
3. Tap OK.
4. On the subsequent screen, tap Yes.
The phone will automatically configure itself with the appropriate settings.
Note: When disabling the connection in this way, your phone may report errors when trying to connect to "Offline." The error is caused by the phone being unable to connect to a data source due to the settings, and is normal.

This is what i want to know. How can we auto disconnect data connection after certain period of time. For example if i set up my device to update weather every hour using EDGE, it wont disconnect automatically but i want it to auto disconnect once the weather is updated regardless of i notice it or not. How do we achieve that?
