Hero vs Rhodium - Hero, G2 Touch General

Guys and gals,
Being a WM user since probably 5-6 years, i am having a "faith crisis" :-(
I am a proud owner of TP2 running wm6.5, and am loving all the development, hacking and customisability you get with WM (thanks to this great community obviously).
Problem is i am being more and more drawn to android OS, and its rapid development, applications, net integration etc.
was wondering if there's anyone out there with rhodium having the same doubts??
Rhodium is bloody good piece of hardware, and its a shame to let it go, but looking at Hero....
well, its tempting. cant have both :-(
i must admit i have posted the same in Rhodium section to see all pro's and cons from both sides.

manga reader?

hi all, is there an app that allows me to read mangas online? sort of like what mango does for the blackberry?
anything anyone? anything at all?
Hi there, Mango developer here. Was googling my app and found this thread, so I just figured I'd mention this: I'm about halfway done with a (albeit watered-down) WinMo port of Mango. It wasn't terribly difficult since Java is very similar to C#, but there are a lot of differences between the .NET Compact Framework and the BlackBerry API so I've hit a couple roadblocks, main one being the pageviewer.
The target platform is PocketPC 2003, so if I can get it to run on my piece of **** 6 year old HP iPaq it'll run on a Rhodium without much complaint, hopefully.
The main problem with the Windows Mobile port is the pageviewer. BlackBerry has support for panning around an image with the touchscreen built in, whereas WinMo (or at least 2003) requires you to manually drag the scrollbars or use the D-Pad on the device. >_> I will try to write a custom imageviewer that allows for scrolling but I don't think it will work all that well.
Also, the only Windows Mobile devices I have are that crappy old iPaq and a Treo 600w, and both of them have very little RAM. I'm worried that Mango's high-res scans won't play nice with those devices' limited memory.
One more thing... the Rhodium (which I am guessing is the device you want to run Mango on) is Windows Mobile right?
Yes, it runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. The rhodium DOES have touch panning also.

One big problem with Windows Mobile is the fact that it is years and years old, with dozens of versions, from crappy hardware and low resolutions to the newer specs and high-res. The iPhone and Blackberry's don't have this problem because of their 'young' age.
If you're developing for WindowsMobile, I would really recommend not trying to develop for OLD OLD devices like your iPaq. What's the point? Your target audience isn't going to be using such old devices like that, and you're just making your life harder for yourself.
Also, don't make your program rely on a D-Pad, as many newer touchscreen devices don't have one!!
Don't develop for WindowsMobile Smartphones (which don't have touchscreen's) but develop for WindowsMobile PocketPC's (which all have touchscreens). Develop for WindowsMobile 6.0 Pro or 6.1, because WinMo 6.5 is about to come out in a few months, and WinMo 7 within a year.
Don't restrict yourself and make your developing harder. Sorry if I sound like I'm coming on high or hard here, but I'm kinda sick of seeing applications that are so limited because they are trying to cater for decade old software and mobiles. Do what the iPhone does. Make a break and start afresh =)
Good luck!!
If you don't mind reading mangas "offline" there's always Comic Reader Mobi.

You make a very valid point. I haven't used WinMo in a long time so I haven't kept up with anything past version 5, and I didn't know how significant the differences were in versions 6 and 6.1 when compared to the devices I'm used to. (since WinMo pretty much stood still from versions 2002-5.0 I just assumed things were the same as ever. hurray for competition getting Microsoft of their asses!)
Though I don't have any 6.0-compatible devices to test on, I will bump up my target platform to 6.0 with .NETCF 3.5 and rely on the emulators. You're right, it really is just a bad headache to write apps for six year old devices with 15 megs of app memory, thanks for opening my eyes heh.
any eta available for the winmo version? i'd be more than willing to help test it =]
hi
if you need a hand with the c# on windows mobile let me know.
I work a lot with it and I think I know this thing pretty well now.
Even if i am pretty busy i probably can save you a lot of time.
pm me if you need
Me again, sorry for the month-old gravedig. I haven't been working on Mango WinMo recently but I've started writing it again for WM6/.NET3.5. Hopefully I'll have a usable version out soon, but no promises. I've also decided to get a TP2 to replace my stolen BlackBerry Storm so maybe that'll give me some incentive to code faster.
Also, if anyone knows of any UI libraries I can use to spruce up the buttons and controls, that would be great. WinMo suuuure is ugly >_>
Well, supposedly the new 6.5 provides for a nicer UI and buttons.
I look forward to your app and I hope you enjoy your new TP2

Really nice of you to bump this thread =)
Here's one TP2-user, who is really waiting for this app. I'm a bit tired to drag around two devices; PSP with custom firmware to read manga and TP2 for everything else.
Much kudos for ya ^^
And for the UI, I hope that upcoming official (if you hesitate to use custom ROMs) 6.5 update for TP2 will spruce things up for you to more liking

[DISCUSSION] HD2 + Android or WP7, real talk.

Hello everyone!
I'm new here, but have been lurking and scouring the forums for a while now. I'm not a dev or anything, so I'm a total noob when it comes to cooking up roms and such... although I've done pleanty of flashing on different devices. I'm treating myself to a new phone as a late birthday present, and the HD2 looks like the best offering at the moment (or anytime soon) from T-Mobile. I just don't want to be stuck with such awesome hardware, running an OS that will be mostly obselete in a few months.
I've read that MS will continue to support WM 6.5, but we all know their deal... it'll be an afterthought once WP7 is released. I would be fine with upgrading to WP7, but unfortunately the HD2 has two too many buttons to meet the HW requirements (according to MS at this point.)
The main thing that makes me believe porting Android would be more plausible, is the upcoming release of the EVO. The hardware is so similar, it's hard for me to believe that it's not possible. Once the EVO is released, could someone use the Android 2.1 image from it, and modify it to run on the HD2? Again, I'm not a programmer, so I'm probably completely wrong... but would love to be proven otherwise.
I'm just looking for some of you with more knowledge and experience to give me some technical insight before dropping $450 on a new phone that will be out-of-date and no longer supported (for the most part) in 6 months. I would also like to keep this thread on topic, so please don't bother slagging the HD2 and suggesting other devices.
Thanks!
and another thread pops up =(
search the forum there are literally tons of threads about this
TONS especially on android
for wp7 there is no news since march 28th announcement so that means nothing more to report than the initial issues had
this is also in the windows phone 7 forum
if you want the phone, get the phone. Winows mobile is a good and highly customizable operating systme on its own and I like it.
you won't regret getting this phone, I sold my nexus one for it, and I don't even miss N1 (simply because it is not the best android phone anymore, HD 2 the best winmo up to date).
I am also a noob, but I encourage myself very often. Now android can run on iphone, what else would stop those geniuses from creating such miracles on HD2. All I have to do is enjoying the phone from the minute I have it, and stick to the forum.
I wouldn't buy the HD2 purely on the speculation of an Android port. There's no certainty that it will ever happen, and if it does, who knows how long it will take.
There are ports for older HTC models and the iPhone, but you have to keep in mind that those handsets have been out for a while, and have had many months, if not years, of development behind them. The HD2 and the snapdragon processor are relatively new, and development is starting from the ground up. It may take up to a year or more before a functional android port is available, and by then, there will more than likely be better hand-sets out there.

Thanks for the reply!
I've actually searched many times, and read tons of threads on this topic. The problem is, most of them are cluttered with TONS of vague info and flaming, with a tidbit of useful info here and there. I was hoping to open some discussion and spark some ideas or interest, maybe try and centralize the info.
Sorry for stepping on any toes, but this is the "T-Mobile USA HD2" general discussion forum, so I figured this would be the best place to start. I just searched the development forum and found a similar thread. I just didn't check there, as I was intending to discuss the possibility and such, not actual developing. Mods, if I'm out of line here, please move or lock this thread appropriately.
Thanks!
Edit- to the other posters, thanks for sharing experiences with me! I wasn't planning on buying the HD2 soley in hopes of porting Android, I guess I'm just looking for reassurance from folks that I'm not getting myself into a device that isn't worth the effort. I love modding my phones, but would rather not be stuck beating a dead horse in a few months. The feedback is greatly appreciated, and makes me feel much better about my decision.

this is true. android on the iphone only works on the iphone 2g as far as i can tell, and that phone is over 4 years old i believe. building linux kernels for a specific phone takes time, and most likely it'll take years to perfect. the ports out now for older winmo phones are useable but obviously not perfect.
i bought my hd2 mainly because it looks like pure sex to me. hehe. windows mobile didnt bother me at all since ive been using windows mobile phones since 2007. dont get me wrong, android is pretty good too. used that for about a year. each os has its own pros and cons i guess.

you wont regret getting this phone. in my opinion htc did a good job with sense, making windows mobile user friendly and whatnot, but if you dont like sense, it can be easily disabled. also the stock rom to me works fine right now but there are a lot of other roms made for the hd2 already so its pretty customizable as is already.

Cool, thanks for the info!
I usually try to keep from modding straight away, but after checking some roms in the development forum, I'm sure I'll start flashing sooner than later, hehe. The main thing I'm liking about the HD2 is it comes stock with the apps I'm most likely to use. I had a 2g iPhone a while back, but found I didn't use most of the apps I installed, and gave it up for a 3g device. Most of what I'm looking for is games/entertainment and themes, and I believe I've found what I'm looking for. If I'm not happy, I may try to cook up something of my own... there's certainly pleanty of resources here to get me started!
Again, I apologize for the redundant thread, but I appreciate all the feedback. This is exactly what I was looking for!

They have been working on porting linux and android to the HD2 for months now. It's not an easy process, as I have stated in the many threads that get started about this. The EVO rom cannot just be ported over. The N1 is just as close hardware wise... they actually used the N1 as a starting point for creating the linux kernel. The Evo may help a little with some drivers.
You have to understand... the kernel for the msm72xx devices (touchpro, TP2, kaiser, etc.) was started over 3 years ago... and they still don't have a fully-functional android port. There will be an android port eventually, but by time theres a fully functional port, there will be many nicer android phones out. Expect it to take a year or more for a fully-functional port, if it's ever FULLY-functional. Search the Rom section in the original Leo section for the official linux project thread.
Get the phone if you like WinMo 6.5. If not, wait for another phone. Trust me, there will be just as nice Android phones for tmobile in the next few months, and WinPhone 7 phones by the end of the year.

WinMo vs. Android

Here's the thing ... I have been using winmo smartphones since the first SPV hit the UK. I have always loved them for their customisability (did I make that word up?) ... customisingness ... you know what I mean
With forums like this for constant tweaks and themes and apps and all sorts, winmo has been great for me. With an HD2 and sense 2.5 custom roms my phone does nearly everything I want it to ... phone/net/messaging/camera/music player/weather/twitter etc etc, and it does it in a very pleasing eye-candy laden manner, one which is customised to exactly the way I like it and is easily changeable when I get bored of looking at the same wallpaper/icons/taskbar/softkeys etc etc, which inevitably happens every few minutes.
Now, I know that winmo as an operating system sucks balls, but I am looking at the overall experience that I have with my phone - I gotta say that the HD2 is the fastest, most reliable phone I have ever used. The HTC sense stuff is probably the reason for most of it being good & looking nice.
So I find myself messing around with android, obviously which is noweher near finished, but you can get the general idea of it. Now, it looks very nice, and it seems to have some nice features ... but really, what is the main reason people want android so badly? I have looked around the android forums and seen that there are some custom roms & tweaks etc, but is it anywhere near as customisable as winmo?
Everyone seems so down on MS, and wondows 7 looks set to be another **** up, but look at the fun we have all had from winmo so far. Without the constant tweaking, customising, forum dwelling etc, I think a huge part of my mobile experience would disappear - the best part.
What do you guys think? Are there good reasons why android could be more fun than winmo in future? Does anybody still love their winmo experience ... even despite the actual winmo bits?
Let's talk.

I think many users are looking at Android, because it straddles the line between ultimate customizability (WinMo) and a modern touch-enabled application-rich OS (iPhone). While many of the tweaks for WinMo are to change the UI to suit the user, a large number are also needed for the smooth operation of the devices, which some don't want to bother with, myself included at times.
WinMo is fine for me, because it provides me an acceptable level of Exchange integration, decent web browsing and email support. However, Android provides those as well, in a more consistent experience, without as much need to worry about random bugs that plague the otherwise decent experience.
Hello Guys,
i am french.
i am using winmo since it starts. i have bought more than 20 phone devices.
actually i use the hd2 and i find it very great.
i see android also. i agree with you.
winmo is good because you can do everything or near with it.
but some great editors has decided not to continue dev on winmo like skype...
some great games also does not ported or developed on winmo like belote (french card game), sccrabble (in french), etc, and some great apps.
but i continue to say that winmo is great and with forum like here it grow everytime.
i hope that new devices like hd2, in future, winmo will find a place with a new terrible version.
there is a lot of things to say but the most important is that everyone have a prefered system and continue to compare them will permit to make a good choice.
thanks to xda... without you all, i don't know..

Yeah, I guess I am thinking of this in a purely selfish way. I imagine the part of the overall winmo ownership that bothers with all the tweaking is relatively small, so in the big picture I guess there are alot more people who rely on stock windows mobile roms that are lacking.
Is android that customisable? E.g can you edit icons on the programs list? Is it just a bit early and android will soon have all the tweaks that winmo currently has? I am hoping so because it is open source.

I agree with you about the developers. For a long time I thought that SBSH was the best software company around, but they abandoned their winmo apps in favour of iPone a long time ago and they lost pace with the htc sense/touchflo market and now their famous today apps are history, pretty much. Seems like many developers have/are abandoning winmo, looks from some reviews fo far that windows 7 will fail.
The key is that Windows Mobile as we know it is about to die a death - there is no support for it any more from either Microsoft or application makers. And from what we have read of the upcoming WM 7, Microsoft seem to have taken a leaf out of Apple's book in that it takes away a lot of the control from the user and is a whole lot less customizable, which is the main feature that appeals to the current WM user base. As such I strongly suspect WM 7's life cycle is going to be short as it seems to me it hasn't really got a target audience - people who want an easy ride and have their hand held buy an iPhone while people who want more control buy an Android device. Who is going to buy a WM7 device? Certainly not the current WM users as the differences are such that there is effectively no similarities beyond the name.
Android is by far the best operating system available on a phone in my opinion. It has the advantage of ease of use along with being highly customizable, the best of both worlds so to speak. It's support is increasing all the time (there are more Android devices than iPhones now) and with Google's muscle it's going to go from strength to strength.
Pretty much what everybody said. Mainly Pagnell made good point.
Let me make my little point too.
The thing why many wants ANDROID (including me, now that I have tried it) is that because Winmo remained the same for a long time. It's basic architecture and overall experience is aimed at older less powerful devise. I use my phone for entertainment and web browsing. The web expericence (opera 10) is imho the best of Handheld OSs, but entertainment lacks a lot. There are only few good looking games. There are even fewer which uses new technology as G-sensor. And multitouch is totally messed up because of the HTC.
So the main problem is, that Winmo aplications (and system as a whole) is aimed for larger scale of phones and in that sense doesnt provide good applications for the newest models (like HD2). Only Great entertainment app for WinMo that can stress HD2 is FPSEce which is also my best reason to stay with Winmo =)
The main reason why I stayed with WinMo is the ability to install applications to memory card... can't do that with the Android...
WinMo is not as bad as you think... check out the link:

I agree entirely. I think it's a shame what seems to be happening to winmo - I don't know how much credibility the forum-user community has ever had in the mobile devices world, but for me as a user it has been an exciting experience from day 1. My mobile experience has been interlinked with forums & customisation since day 1 and it has involved sharing a great deal with a great deal of people on the web. I have/do enjoy it as a part of the experience.
If android takes over as the place to be for all the fun of customising then so be it. MS should hang their heads in shame for allowing winmo to die off, but it has been fun.

You can with Froyo 2.2
I hate the only thing about Android that is really pain in the a$ - transition effects are LOUSY ... not comperable to iPhone and that is the biggest flaw of Andorid. Even WinMo Sense has better transition than Android... Tried EVO and X - LOUSY CHOPPY transition effects and not comparable not only to iPhone but not comparable to WinMo as well.
Moving from WinMo to Android, I realised that there is no equivalent of ActiveSync (or WMDC) for direct synchronisation to Outlook on the desktop. I prefer to keep my PIM info to myself and not rely on the cloud based services Google is encouraging.
Is there an Android equivalent?
Each system has its own benefits and drawbacks. With WM I can use offline gps maps with igo or tom tom, I can get great idle battery life, great outlook sync and several UI options with sense(max, cookie) or SPB Shell. Android is more sophisticated under the hood, looks and feels more smooth, has a great app market and is actively being developed and updated.
Having both of these on the HD2 is something other smartphone users will never have the opportunity to have.
I'm also tired of android and iphone users killing windows mobile. Most of them have never used it and aren't aware how well it can run. WM takes a little effort to get a custom rom and good software but its still a good system.
Indeed! Having both winmo & android on an hd2 seems an appropriate pay off for years of supporting mobile development on forums.

which runs on exactly how many devices??? (without rooting and running a custom ROM)
I really don't know why you guys say that winmo is more costumizable than android. I own a tmobile g1, nexus one, an HD2 and have owned other winmo phones and I can honestly tell you that android is as costumizable or more than winmo. IMO Android is superior in almost everything than winmo. Really the only reason I bought the HD2 was for the screen. I had never owned a phone with such a huge screen . You can't compare winmo to android port for HD2 since it is nowhere near finished. Just look at the G1/Dream forum, there are ALOT of roms, mods, themes, apps and tweaks for it even though it was the first android phone ever and has been left behind by much better and newer android phones. I'm a power user with my phones (even take it when going to restroom lol) and even though I love the HD2 hardware I can't leave android. I guess everyone gets used to a certain OS and it depends alot on a user's needs but I'm just giving you MY opinion and by a means I respect everyone else's opinion.
Right now, WinMo is way more customizable than android. Most android users that say android is as customizable don't even realize everything that is changeable and skinnable and customizable on winmo. Pretty much EVERYTHING on WinMo can be changed to look and act the way you want. It takes a lot of work and time and playing around to do it and get it working good, though.
WinMo is the most versatile mobile os available right now, imo. The main issue is that support and developers for it are coming to an end. It was always aimed more at business and power users and was never made user friendly enough and never advertised enough for the average phone user. WinMo was originally designed as a pocket pc os, then when phones and pocket pcs converged, phone functions were added to winmo. Android was designed as a phone os to begin with, and are adding more functionality as its developed, so its a lot more user friendly and understandable to the average phone consumer. Android is catching up in its versatility and functionality as it developed, and will one day be more functional than winmo, i'm sure. But WinMo is a great os to power users, business users, and people who know it well, and it will be a while before android matches it's versatility. I know many android fans will argue that, but I've used winmo for 8 years and android for more than 2 years... and I love them both... but I would pick winmo over android right now. In a year, I may change my mind as android is constantly being developed and has a LOT of apps, while WinMo is dying.
But the great thing with the HD2 and most current winmo devices is that we can run android also... so when I need to run a specific android app or just want to play around with android, I can quickly boot into it. You can't boot into winmo with android devices. I think I will be using my HD2 for a long time, as it's going to be probably the greatest winmo device ever made, and I'll be able to use android... and the way the devs are developing android on the HD2, I think it will actually be close to as functional as a native android device a lot sooner than I thought it would be. It's being developed quicker than any previous android port to a winmo device in the past.
As a avid android supporter and a owner of an hd2 I really like having both windows mobile and android.
with the recent port of Android to the hd2 I am happy to have my widgets back .
A lot of what I missed about android was its skinned interface. Sure windows is skinned but when you by pass sense you end up seeing the ugly windows ce look.
It drives me batty.
Also windows is dying. It is getting hard
er and harder to find apps. Those apps also dont get updated either.
I have no interest in windows mobile 7
And I had it with the iphone and any other apple products.
btw android is just as customizable as windows mobile. Much in the say ways .. atleast in my opinion
I would agree with mustang_3kgt, it also baffles me when people argue to get hd2 or to stick to it because it is very customisable since it is based on WinMo. I use my hd2 since february and i agree that it is customisable and it is pretty easy once you know what you are doing. But customisability of a phone in my opinion should not be measured by the mere ability to customise every single bit, but by the existing possibilities to customise. what i mean for instance is the number of themes available for hd2/sense 2.5. as far as i know there are just 4 themes: GTX, Fallout, Buuf and Anastasia, thats it. yesterday i checked nexus 1's forum and on the first page i bumped into 5 good looking themes. i know you would say you have winmo and customise your phone in a way you want to, but not every user has the necessary design skills.
as it has already been said, winmo is a dying platform, android in a hardware like hd2 (4.3 inches screen) is the future
What is all this winmo is dead and abandoned stuff?
There is as much or more activity on this forum for WinMo as there was a year ago.
There are many more websites and forums devoted to WinMo and WinMo apps than there was a year ago.
There are two new WinMo marketplace sites under active development.
Microsoft just released Office Mobile 2010 and gave it to their 6.5 customers. Is that abandonment? Phones are still being sold with WinMo on them new.
There are not as many WinMo apps, but does there need to be? When did quantity, not quality, become the better parameter?
All you have to do is mention a need for an app on these forums and if it seems worthwhile a team jumps on it and develops it.
With WinMo there are almost as many themes as phones. It is so customizable that everyone can have their own amazing theme.
What did the man say? "The reports of my demise have been greatly exaggerated!"

Why HD2 will be my ultimate phone

I have gone and done it, just bought a HD2 and it arrives tomorrow...
Selling my Samsung Galaxy S and returning to my old faithful Windows mobile, responses I have had from some, state I must be mad its old dying platform.
But I for one still prefer my old Touch HD over the bloomin horrid Iphone and now Android, which I simply don't like, reminds me of Mobile shell and I never really liked the messy widget type layout with that either, don't get me wrong here the galaxy s is a superb phone, in fact is quite ballistic and that screen is amazing....BUT I miss my old Memory map navigation sync with my desktop, my collins bird guide and pocketbirds.
I very much miss the ease of sync with my outlook and the simplistic way everything is compatible with my office docs, I have become so used to windows mobile for so many years I don't think I am compatible with anything else just yet, but at least I gave them a go...
Hopefully the HD2 will be as good as my old HD was and more...
looks like You know what You are talking about, so all I can say is that You'll be more than happy. I know it because I am...
hd2 is the best winmo phone ever. period. snapdragon is the answer to most of problems from the past, plus sense interface makes it pleasant and useable.
my advice - stick to most recent stock rom, just tweak it as You used to with previous wm devices. I did that... rock solid, fast, no crashes nor freezes.
I am keeping my hd2 even if I'll buy something new in the future. for now there is no better choice for winmo users... and unfortunately there will never be.
a real leo...

sounds like a declaration of love to your leo
but you are absolutely right. its the fackin best winmo device.
Glad to see someone still spreading the love for windows mobile. I have defended WM on my Leo to many Iphone and Android fanboys who are too dumb to use WM properly.
I'll admit I have been playing with Android lately but I will never remove it if the option to flash android becomes available. I wind up back in WM much of the time.
agreed, tis a fantastic piece of kit. i've always sold on my earlier phones but as the above poster stated, this one is staying. you will love it mate !!!
naaah... I wouldn't call it love. see... it is just a tool. I understand however it's capabilities and raw power.
back in the past, I was torn between hd2 and nokia n900. well... I went for HUGE capacitive screen and snapdragon. after placing an order some doubts appeared, but... when I've unpacked the box and held it for a very first time I knew instantly I made the right choice.
now after about eight months, numerous tweaks and apps installed, despite few scratches on the housing it is still my gadget of choice. tried android (same thoughts as op, too much spb ms to me...) and iphone. well... I am waiting for android 3 and wp7, but I just may keep leo for quite a long time... we shall see...

Where do we go from here?

i've noticed in the last few weeks that new rom releases became more and more alike and basicaly no much novelty lately
chefs use the same packages and almost the same tweaks, meaning the roms are almost similar in performance. what differentiate them is just the looks, but that is a matter of taste and one can soon get bored by a certain look
microsft will probably drop 6.5.x after wm7 will be launched (very soon)
i tried few android roms on my hd2 and i can't say android represents an alternative for me
i assume it will be the same with wm7 even if people will port it to hd, considering the limitations
so, what do you think guys? are we in a dead point?
WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
thank you for sharing your opinions!
regards
microsoft has already promised further support for winmo 6.5.x, which is supported by the upcoming release of a 6.5.x industrial phone forth coming. With any luck, we will at least be able to get future ROM bases from them.
As long as WinMO 6.5.x is supported, I will continue using that in conjunction with Artemis ROM. Android is also not my thing and what I've seen from Win7, does not make me happy.
However, I think Artemis ROM is somewhat different to other ROM's
regards, Kuzibri
Winmo isn't just used in phones, you would be amazed at how many non-"phone" devices its used in by industry.
Did you know for example that the Ultra Baggage Reconciliation System uses windows mobile? Thats right, pretty much anywhere in the modern world where you fly from, your bags are scanned into an aircraft/uld using windows mobile!
Many other industries use it as well.... including storage, parcel couriers, mail companies, supermarkets, taxi firms ... the list can go on.
With this kind of user base and licensing, MS won't throw away Winmo quickly!
(MS have (probably) had a lot of financial success with WinMo over the years, its not just a phone!)
edit: i'm into systems integration and industrial automation, I have seen winmo installed myself in these environments and often used the devices.
You might consider SPB Mobile Shell 5.0 when it's available if you fancy a change..

http://spb.com/press/pressreleases/...-shell-5.0-for-manufactures-and-carriers.html
I'm hoping, with the birth of Co0kie's mod 2.0, that we may see a surge in ROMs.
I agree that for the last six months, most released ROMs have been "close to stock", which is fine, but there seems a limit on what tweaks can be made, and visually most are very similar.
But now I'm really hoping for loads of Theme-packs, novel uses of the homepage, new widgets, etc. I'm hoping that once 2.0 is finalised, these forums are going to explode!!
So far tho, there's just been some wallpapers, the "fore-skin" , and a few icon-packs. But hopefully stuff is brewing...
i think we are pretty much in a dead point. MS has probably promised to further support MS 6.x, but do you honestly think that that would be the case once WM 7 is out? I think the whole WM team is fully concentrated on the launch of WM7 and will be busy with further upgrades. i might be wrong but i don't expect anything from MS. frankly saying i feel that MS does not give a monkey's about WM 6.x users. If they did, they could offer a free upgrade of WM7 to HD2 owners. I know you will think about the 5 physical buttons, the new kernel and etc, but if the company really cared, that upgrade would not be a problem taking into consideration HD2's specs. We all bash Apple for whatever reasons, but you have to give credit to them for supporting even outdated iphone 3g with new iOS updates.
I understand MS when they require all phones to have certain specs, buttons etc.
The idea being that WP7 updates will work on all certified phones regardless of OEM, phone model, etc.
Consider this system continuing into the future, Windows Phone 8, 9 and so on - and the upgrade path will always be there...
Catering for other models doesn't make sense. That's what great communities like XDA are for.
(Having said that - I don't even have an HD2. I'm waiting to test WP7 before I decide if it's for me. If it isn't, I'll pick up a now cheaper HD2. That's why I'm watching these forums now - to see how fresh the HD2 options are and if you HD2 owners are still happy with your HD2's. Also, I've bought many WM6.5 apps in the past and it would be a shame to not be able to use them still on a nicer and larger model.)
I for one love the idea of being able to have both win mobile and android on the same phone just a boot away. It is the sole reason I just bought a HD2. I would love to see a version of Co0kie's mod 2.0 on the HD2 Android side as well. I'm a huge Android fan but the Sense UI on the win mobile HD2 looks much tighter and intergrated than it does on the Desire, Desire HD, or EVO. Icons scattered around 3, 5, or 7 screens is an eye sore in my opinion. If you think about it with every new release from HTC the HTC Android phones are starting to look more and more like the HD2's win mobile Sense UI version. Developers, here is a challenge. Make the Android side of the Hd2 look like the win mobile Sense UI side. The future of android will be widgets on the Screens and apps hidden away for use when needed until they can be intergrated into a far more attracted and collabrative widget. If you looks at the widgets that come with Launcher pro plus it is clears that they know this as well .

gotta disagree. There are too many enteprise type devices out there using winmo for it to just go away. As long as they are pushing 6.5.x as the enterprise base, then we will get driver updates, new bases to build on. We might not see anymore sense updates, but it's not getting completely abandoned yet.
