Touch HD signal issues; incoming/outgoing call problems - Touch HD General

Bit of a n00b here, so apologies if I've posted this in the wrong place.
For the last ten days or so, my Touch HD has been experiencing issues when placing outgoing or receiving incoming calls. Despite apparently showing full 'H' or '3G' signal strength, a number of incoming calls are dropped, seemingly at random, and redirected to voicemail without the handset receiving the call, and without the caller hearing any 'ringing' (i.e. straight to voicemail).
There is no consistent pattern to these occurrences; in a test of 20 consecutive calls placed 30 seconds apart, the first three were directed to voicemail without ringing, followed by two successful consecutive calls, followed by a further 15 voicemail redirects.
Issues exist when placing outgoing calls too; in a further test of 20 consecutive calls, all but the penultimate attempt failed to successfully place a call; 19 of the attempts resulted in the handset displaying a "dialling" message for around 40-60 seconds, before a 'beep beep beep' indicated that the attempt had failed.
While most of the time, these failures occur while the handset claims to have acquired full or near-full signal strength, there have also been a number of instances where the handset has ditched all cellular connections, and goes from full 'H' to no service whatsoever; the only way to work around this is to then turn the phone radio off and back on again via the communications settings menu.
This is a standard HTC Touch HD acquired off network, and running mostly vanilla programs; HD Tweak is installed, but the only settings changed have been cosmetic.
ROM: 1.56.405.1 (43972) WWE
Radio: 1.13.25.24
I've been a WinMo handset owner for ten years, and I'm used to tweaking and customising devices, and while I'm no expert by any means when it comes to ROMs and the more technical aspects of these handsets, I do know what not to touch to avoid buggering the handset right up.
Aside from scratches to the screen (caused by a chipped stylus!), it has never been damaged in any way (dropped, knocked, bumped, crunched or moistened), and certainly nothing has happened in the last two weeks that could have been responsible for this kind of tits-up.
I've done everything I can think of short of a full hard-reset.
So... should I be considering a hard-reset? Is this likely to be a software/settings glitch rather than a hardware problem?
I'd be hugely grateful for any suggestions that members can put forward - and I'd be even more thankful if you could use the simplest language possible for my tiny mind to comprehend.
Huge thanks in advance for any help that you can offer.

I had the exact same things happen to me (although not quite as frequent). It happened after I started experimenting with flashing cooked ROMs to my device and upgraded the radio version to 1.14.25.24 which is what I think caused the problems.
I recently installed the rilphone.dll to go with the radio version (the cab has been added to the beginning of the thread for Radio 1.14.25.24 in the ROM development forum) and this seems to have fixed my problems.
Something else that should not be ignored is the problem may simply be your network operator - I would suggest you repeat the test when in another geographic location as the problem could occur when there is a shortage of capacity between your network operator's switch site and the base station to which you are currently connected.
Try that first, and if you don't get anywhere, consider upgrading your radio version to 1.14.25.24 using USPL and installing the accompanying rilphone.dll from the cab file. There are some very comprehensive guides to flashing custom ROM images in the ROM Devlopment forum, and flashing a new radio version will not require a hard re-set or any loss of your personal data or installed applications, although there are always risks involved when flashing new software to your device, so make sure you are aware of the risks before you proceed.
Good luck!

Budadank, many thanks for your notes - I'll give your suggestions a go, and hopefully that'll resolve some of the issues, or at least shed some light on the problem. I'm relieved to hear that I'm not the only one that's had this problem, and glad to hear that you managed to get it sorted; there's hope for me yet...
Cheers!

Same problems here with stock firmware
I tried other firmwares and came back to original in order to avoid these
problems with no luck
I also had the problem that I hear the other person fine but he does not
hear me (about 50% of the calls) and eventually the call was dropped
My operator is considered good
My N95 is 200% better than my Touch HD in the matter of phone -signal quality
It seems to me that the phone always tries to switch betwen 3g and gsm
The only "solution" I could find was to disable gsm and use only 3G...

i had a completely different experience with my N95. the reception quality was much worse than that of my Touch HD, and it would always do exactly what you said your HD does: dropping calls, directing calls to voicemail, although signal was full, etc. My HD had this problem only once and then I realised it was the SIM. After I had it changed, no more problems. So you could try to change your SIM, too.

On O2?
I had a similar problem switching from Orange to O2 on my HD.
I found this thread on the O2 forum that may help.
http://forum.o2.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=23749
I did the sim bit in another phone to "provision" it and it seems to be staying connected better.
The reception is still poor but it doesn't seem to drop as much.
Not sure if your on the same operator but might be worth while trying?
I dumped my Orange contract after "the text" fiasco a few weeks ago and went with O2 simplicity but its pretty poor here, so I might end up back with Orange although without the 15 months of my contract remaining
Cheers
BimB

I put a new SIM 3 months ago.
The SIM does not seem to have any effect at the HD dropping calls
while in Auto mode.
In WCDMA mode the HD stays connected (if and when there is 3G signal)
In N95 with the same SIM I don't have any problems

it realy works
try this , it realy works
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4473103&postcount=165

I am in the same position, moved from Orange with their fiasco to O2.
My signal where I live was fine with ORange but shocking with O2.
I have put my sim in an old Nokia and the signal is fine and I can make calls.
I have spoken to CS and got the usual "your phone isnt supported" stories, and she tried to get settings but couldnt do it, but also said my sim was provisioned.
I have tried all the different radios, from 1.14, to 1.16 xperia, to 1.17 and no difference at all (well 1.17 made the phone unusuable for me).
Im pretty much fed up of it really, my HTC is a brick when im at home as its impossible to make calls with.

After softreset, first couple of phone calls are unstable

Hi,
im not sure if this happens to every unit or even every network operators; I have used two units in the past 5 months and have noticed on both units that after I soft reset and the unit is booted up, the first couple of calls that i either make or receive when im travelling either by bus train or car, the calls become robotic, and similar to loss of signal (even though the phone tells me it has full signal) eventually the call is disconnected automatically. This also happens on the next call; however on the third or more call (or until the unit is softresetted again) the calls on the phone become stable and perfect...
im running on DTAC network in Thailand
This is really getting to me and Im thinking the O2 is having trouble solving this problem as I have noticed this flaw since the 200511xxROM-Radio041 (i think) all upto this current 200604xxROM-Radio049. i am going to try out the 6828 and see if its any better.
Thanks in advance for any feebacks
Hi Nutdhanai
I dont have an atom but knows the lossy network issues. I have an Gigabyte g-smart and have some problems connecting to gsm service, sometimes loss signal. No problems in call yet, but yes the other 2 mentioned.
When we buy an upcoming device, the OS are unfinished, like an preproduciont unit or similar. We need to stay seated on for the engineers rom updates...
Good luck, we'll have good devices.-.. or I hope so...
hi there!
also in thailand, using the rw 6828 and i recogize what you are talking about except that i have this instability all the time with DTAC. I cannot move between 2 cells without dropping a call. I have not tried another SIM of Truemove or AIS though, it might be better. Waiting for a ROM upgrade cause whatever the issue with the provider is my Motorola Razor v3 does ok on DTAC. So it must be the PDA, SLIGHTLY SIMILAR ISSUES with the 6365 before. Keep us posted on your experiences!

Which Radio ROM for UK T-Mobile MDA Vario II?

Hi all, apologies for posting this, as there I know there's tons of other threads relating to this matter - I've spent quite some time reading (and being confused!) by them, but I can't seem to find a thread which a) has someone describing the exact problem I have, or b) giving a definitive solution. So here it is:
I have a UK MDA Vario II. It's my second one (replaced under warranty), this, and my first one both had a problem where I would seemingly randomly not receive calls or texts. The phone shows it has a signal, and the green light would be flashing to indicate service. However, on occasions, if you try to ring the phone, it diverts straight to voicemail. Sometimes service resumes normally (about an hour later) and I get a message informing me of my missed calls, and sometimes I have to do a soft reset to get it working again.
What I have gathered from reading on these forums is that I may need to upgrade my radio - it had version 1.05.02.00 on it (which it must have been shipped with).
So - following instructions, I put HardSPL 2.10 on to the device, then flashed the Radio ROM to version 1.47.30.10, deciding that this looked the safest bet based on the feedback of other people on the Forum. Having done this (last night) I decided to test the phone once per hour today by just calling it, and I only got to the second test before it failed again - showing signal and green light flashing - but calls going straight to voicemail.
So - I don't want to do any damage to the phone - but I need to know that when someone's calling me, it's going to ring (we're moving house soon, so I'm relying on certain calls from solicitors, bank etc etc). Can anyone tell me of a reliable Radio ROM version for an MDA Vario II on T-Mobile UK? (which won't introduce further problems!)
THANKS!!

Ive never had any problems with calls not connecting, the only times it has failed is due to poor reception and ofcourse network busy errors.
I wouldnt worry about the radio version it sounds like a network issue. Have enabled 3G on it??

I have (and thanks btw - it was your guides that I followed attempting the flash last night). The thing is, a good friend of mine has the same phone, in the same area - and he doesn't get these issues. My other half is also on T-Mobile, but uses a Sony Ericsson and doesn't have any problems with coverage. I'm in a city centre right now, and my house isn't far out - we both have decent reception there.
In fact - an interesting thing just happened (literally..) - I have my phone on a charging cradle, and it had been dormant for a while, so the screen was off. It woke up, as if about to receive a call or text, but then nothing happened... so I called myself from my office phone - and it connected ok.
About 5 minutes later my girlfriend called me up on the mobile, and I mentioned the issue was still there - and she said 'yeah, i tried to call you about 5 minutes ago'.... so it's like the call was received (i.e. the phone new about it), but it didn't complete the process.
I had thought a new radio version might help (from my very limited understanding of such matters) - are you saying that's not the case?
Does 3G affect this too? What can I do - I use the internet more than anything else on my phone....
Thanks
does anyone have any further advice on this?
Mr Vanx? Anyone??
My phone is still randomly losing signal - generally not accepting incoming calls (though today it was not accepting calls, whilst I was still able to make them...). I think I may go and get it replaced by T-Mobile - but I have upgraded the radio to 1.47.30.10, and have put HardSPL 2.10 onto it.
I guess I need to downgrade to original versions, but I can't seem to find a guide which tells me if what I want to do is OK (and how...).
Please - can anyone assist - I believe my original radio rom was 1.05.05.00, and the SPL version was 1.01.
I'm using 1.54.30.10 and it's fine. I found 1.54.00.10 pretty good as well. Much fewer dropped calls comparing to any 1.4x RadioROMs. Signal strenght is also better. The only thing I cannot comment on is the battery life, as I charge the phone every night whether it's 90% or 10%.

did you have the same problems as me? - phone appearing to have a signal but calls being diverted to voicemail... seemingly randomly...
Use GSM mode as default
I have the exact same problem (I travel between Birmingham and London mainly) on my Vario II. It is really fustrating and my wife seems to think I dont answer her calls/txts on purpose(!)
On mine, the problem is due to the 3G mode - when I turn OFF 3G and use normal GSM the problem goes away. I get all calls/txt and internet connections sucessfully. When I turn on 3G the problem comes back - lost calls and unsucessfull internet connections. When in 3G mode sometimes it works somtimes it doesnt
Someone mentioned it could be that it is not switching between 3G and GSM automatically when no 3G is available. However, it happens even when in a good strong 3G area.
I swear this problem did not happen in the early part of my contract but only recently. One theory is that TMobile has sold so many 3G devices now both monthly and pay-as-you-go (esp 3G Data Modems with users using the network for their laptops) that the TMobile cells are just getting overloaded. Also, it could be that TMobile are also doing an upgrade of the 3G network and it is causing problems for users.
So what I do is run the phone in GSM mode as default (so no missed calls/txt and use Opera Mini for quick web surfing works well in GSM mode) Then switch on 3G mode if I am going to do any web surfing for more then 5 mins.
The added side benefit is also much much better battery life in GSM mode (3G soaks up the juice very quickly). I never use video calls ect so no loss there.
My Comm Manager has a toggle for 3G/GSM mode so I use that to quickly change between the 2 modes.
In Summary I would rather have a reliable phone for recieving/making calls then one which is hit and miss.
btw, Im now due an upgrade - wondering if I should stay with TMobile or not...
We appear to have the same phone 'lives'!

Same here - we're in the middle of selling 2 properties and buying another one, so I could really do with not having the phone playing up.

Ditto - im due for upgrade in March, and had been looking at the Vario iii - but am now wondering if I should be looking at another network? Is this a consistent problem with all 3G devices on T-Mobile - or does it just affect the Vario ii?

I signed up in Sep 06 and there was no problem with 3G mode then (problem free for the first 12 months at least).
From your phone internet rowser goto http://mini.opera.com/ and click on Download Opera Mini (this is latest version 4).
Before you do this make sure you have Esmertec Jbed midlet manager installed (Opera Mini is a Java App).
I use Opera Mini 90% of the time and its still renders fast on a GSM connection.
Ive uploaded the CABs for you for the Midlet Manager and Comm Manager.
I dont know if it only affects the VarioII maybe others can comment. If its a network issue then I would expect it affecting other devices also.
I want to go for the HTC Touch Dual (aka MDA Touch Plus on TMobile) as my next phone but may go with Orange if it is a network issue. Only reason I stay with TMobile is for the 'unlimited' web'n walk tarrif..but if I can't use 3G realiably then what is the point?

Thanks very much for loading this stuff...
my other half is after the touch plus too - but have advised her to do some research before committing to T-Mob again.... though if she gets it and it's ok, i'll post some feedback on here...
Cheers
The Touch Plus is a good phone if you can live without Wifi...Ive read somewhere that this problem is dependant on the area you are in ...in particular the TMobile cell tower servicing the area you are in and it is possible to phone TMobile tech support to get an engineer to investigate and correct the problem. In my case that would be my home address and my work address - maybe worth a try?
Just to add my 2p worth... my radio is 1.05.05.00 (came on the phone, which was a replacement for the first which had the screen drift)... I've had occasional times when the phone's lit up but nothing's happened, but I usually chalk that down to the phone doing an activesync check for push mail, and as there's nothing there, it goes back to sleep.
To my knowledge, I've not really missed any calls or anything like that since way back last year - when sometimes I'd be sitting in the same café as a mate also on T-Mobile, and we'd do the you-call-me-i-call-you thing to get each others' numbers - and it'd go straight to voicemail! That was quite amusing.
Nobody's told me that they've had problems trying to reach me on my mobile though for a fair while now, so I'd almost completely forgotten about this problem!
edit: yay, 500th post! Took a while but got there eventually... Anybody want to sponsor me with a free Kaiser?

Hi, I confess I haven't read the thread in great deal (am in a rush and am just passing through!) but you could try this official T-Mobile UK ROM. It's Windows Mobile6 and Radio 1.50.xxx (as far as I remember). The main thing is that it's official, and includes their latest sanctioned bootloaders etc. I flashed it to mine before taking back for warranty (as it's not possible to go back to the old 1.05 radio from recent unauthorised versions).
T-Mobile UK WM6 complete MDA Vario II ROM:
http://member.htc.com/ruudownload/t-mobile/TMobileWM6Step1-TMuk.aspx
sim
:O when did that become available? I swore to myself I'd keep an eye on the TM phone downloads site because I knew WM6 was available for some devices, but I completely forgot and since then they've rolled out WM6 for my phone... Which is a proper pain, but at the same time a really nice surprise.
Hard reset your device, install ALL applications on the phone (nothing on the micro SD - except outlook attachments). This should solve the problem.

call receiving from time to time

My dual is strangely working from almost a week now. He didn't receive any call during a few minutes and then receive the sms from Orange telling i've missed some call. Form time to time I also can't phone or suddenly can phone again. Half an hour with Orange support when we try almost all that's possible on line dut that didn't help, and that's wronger and wronger alllong the day.
So It's now send by Orange to HTC and I'm waiting.
Did you heard somethings like that? Is it a Dual Known problem? or an Orange room problem?
Any answer welcome....
The Icon on the top said that the reception is good (three vertical lines)
and the sim card work well on other phone (tested on a Nokia and a Touch)
New HTC Dual received today.
The new one's working well untill I add some softwares.
The Niki again began to receiving call from time to time, call from the Nki still working.
The problem began after updating Norton security and adding s2u2.
Didn't really know which one is causing the problem, both are working well on a touch.
The only difference between my Touch and my dual is that the dual had am Orange room. Did you have information about that?
More trying.....
After a week of working, today, the problem of call receiving began again and is worse and worse along the day finishing with no call receiving and no calling from the niki possible. It didn't recognise any provider (at the beginning of the day, it find Orange and I can phone but not receive any call, all are going to my voice box.
I hard reset again the Niki, and install my last working backup with no more result than a non working phone but only a pda.
Carefully installing again quite all my software after a hard reset and the phone is working now perfectly.
The only think I found different from the last try is the small pop up who open when clicking on the icons on the top (connection, sound...). The pop up has desappear when the Niki's not working. The problem is that I didn't know which software is causing the problem.....
Any idea?
The problem is also only at work..... So may be, something in the surounding seems to have an effect on the Dual reception. Strange as Iphones, Touchs or Nokias seems to have no reception problem in the same room.
Ive also have the same problem, but ive solved it by disabling 3G and just going with GSM on "band" selection.
Can you see your network signal bar having one line only then this is the solution for you. Just activate 3G on sites with good signal.
Thanks for the advice, will try.
As my working place is near some IRM machines (working in an Hospital), Is it possible than my problem arise when all machine are working at the same time?
As the hospital is big, I think than almost one is working when I'm at work, but as the problem arise from time to time, not regulary, it look like something affect the NIKI reception and perhaps only the 3G. To confirm that, I left from time to time the connection when I walk just along the place where all IRM machines are.
Anybody can confirm that?

The signal is almost very good even when calling and receiving calls is not possible.
So, it seems that magnetic fields created by IRM machines can affect 3G+.
If the problem is due for example by the size of the walls, then 3G+ will never work at this place nor the GSM.
Just talk yesterday with an Orange Tech.
The UMTS antennas in the surrounding are at the same place than the GSM antennas, so my office had the best theorical coverage possible in the town.
The UMTS waves be affected by electromagnetic devices in the surrounding explaining why call can from time to time be directly rejected to the answering machine even the connection icon on my Nike is always with three lines and didn't change. It explain also that, when the phone card is inserted in other phone without UMTS, it works without any problem.
So thank again to muzikfreakah for giving me the solution. However UMTS seems to be not a very useful add.....
Is there any utility to switch automaticaly from an auto search to a maual search on a time base? Will be useful for me.
Hi i had the same problem, and found that it was the new S2U2(Newer then 0.98), that messed it up.
Im using 0.98 at the moment, and it works fine.
Anything newer than 0.98, hangs any incomming calls.
The one calling can often hear up to 10 rings, and my phone rings half a tone, when the caller hangsup, so theres no time to answer the call.
Thanks for your advice muuu, but in my case, the problem appear only from time to time at my office. So the theory involving electromagnetic fog seems the best. UMTS work fine when I'm outside work or at home and never miss a call.
However, when at work, I'm only sure with GSM to receive or make call. Seems to depend of the use of IRM (just near one of the bigest IRM machines concentration in Europe with some still under development).
S2U2 is working perfectly even with the latest version if I respect the no 3G at work and switch it back when not working.
Hope this may help somebody in the futur
Thanks I had the same problem so removed S2U2.
After talking with IRM experts, it seems that I'm rigth..... IRM interfer with 3G and Wifi and not with GSM
Switching to diamond a few month ago and never had such problem with the diamond!
Nike seems to be the only phone affected and mine after stop working during holiday's was changed by Orange for the second time. Seems to work well now for my wife, I've not tried again at work.

HD2 Web Connectivity Issues and Analysis

Seriously people....
I've seen lots of threads recently. People are complaining that the HD2's data connection cuts out, leaving them unable to access the Internet from their phones for who knows how long. I know, it IS kinda annoying...But the thing is..
I can tell you this IS NOT a hardware problem. It's something to do with either the OS....or something in the phone's registry settings which no one has picked up yet...I hear that phones like the TP2 do not have this error, and I agree. My old unbranded Touch Pro 2 was brilliant, I could use it for IM and texts anywhere...LOL I used to sit on the Bus while people stared at my phone, while I was on Messenger talking to my phone. Anyways, here's what I wanna tell you guys. Hope I help out everyone in some way or another.
What I have:
HD2
3 Mobile Sim-So yeah, My Operator is 3 UK
Living in London, UK
Using ENERGY's 17th March Version ROM
HUSPA, HDSPA Enabled
What I've noticed:
The phone cuts out the signal when the transition between 3G and H occurs in the icons. As a result, the Internet cuts out temporarily, and programs such as Messenger lose connectivity for a while. For example, when the icon is on H, and no one's talking on Messenger, the Icon changes back to 3G....during this moment it cuts out sometimes..until it reverts back to the H icon (Got that? I know, it's a little long and complicated when I word it like that, but read it out and it'll make sense xD)
Now, whenever I have the phone connected to my PC/Laptop (Either as a Wi Fi Router or through the cable and then using Internet Sharing, either way, the phone does NOT change back to 3G, it stays constantly on H (Mind you, I usually download during this period). Anyways, the point being that the connection is VERY stable and constant, when in this state, connected to my PC/Laptop and the device is accessing the Internet through my phone's Data Connection. So what do you all think? And what have YOU found out? Leave your responses and ideas below
Some things I have found out are, if you Enable ONLY HUSPA in the Settings/Connectivity options, the connections seem to be more stable. Furthermore, if you really want to, Disable Advanced Connections, stay only on 3G, and enjoy a LOT of stability (At the cost of slower speed surfing and downloading )
My HD2 does not connect at all anymore. I called in to support because I completely lost data connectivity (web browser, email, slacker, whatever - no connection). They verified no troubles on their end. I moved the sim to my old touch pro (running Energy ROM w/ winmo 6.5 and Sense 2.1) and that phone connects fine. So it's not the SIM, and it's not the network.
I've also done a hard reset to get back to stock and still have the problem, which tells me that it's not a registry / software setting.
They only thing that leaves is faulty hardware - or firmware that a ROM hard reset wouldn't affect. Either way I need to replace the device altogether.
Unfortunately, tmo is out of stock and so I can only wait for a more to become available before it can be replaced.

Which phone company are you with? I experienced the same problem with 3UK in North London for a couple of months up until the beginning of last week but it was a problem at 3's end, not mine. Other people have been experiencing similar issues with non-3 phones in London (http://www.3g.co.uk/3GForum/showthread.php?t=102192).
yes, I had problems in London too before Good Friday. Especially on Tues+Wed.
Others around me inthe library also had similar issues with their iphones. I kept on switching the baseband and modes, and reapplying my 3G settings to keep it alive and solve the outages.
Most people with issues were on vodafone or O2 (like me).
It would work, then cut, then work.
I thought at first it was because I had a custom ROM, but iphone users had the same - and lots of timeouts on requests.
I DO believe however that running ROMS like energy's and Dutty's HG 1.7 with 2.10 (which I'm currently running) bases as 2_08 radios is not great for the uk and exacerbates the connection issue. 2_07 is better...and in any event we SHOULD be using 1.72 based roms with 2_09 radio.
I have also noticed that on COM5 23544 builds the opera mobile 9.7 and 10 google boxes do not work. They come up as failed connection, but then i click on teh link and it works...weird huh???
So I think last week was because of network faults in London. But in general, these 2.10 based ROMS and their radios are not ideal for stability.
I had perfect call and HSDPA stability with 1.48stock+2_09 radio.
Having turned to a 23544 rom (Dutty's HG) with 2_08 radio I've had much less call and internet stability (and quality) over the stock with 2_09.

HD2 phones missing calls and hanging up mid-call

Hi all,
I work in a company who have just dished out over 100 HD2 phones to their staff... we're on call and are having some problems with the handsets missing calls and dropping calls mid-call, and I just want to know if we're alone in this, or if it's a common problem, or better, if anyone knows of a solution!
We use Orange (UK) as our carrier, the phones are NOT orange branded....
When we get a missed call, we can be in an area with good coverage (3G or otherwise, it doesn't seem to matter). The person calling us gets a ringing tone as normal, but the phone doesn't seem to do anything (ie, no indication that it's getting a call coming in). Once the caller has given up (or been directed to answerphone) we do seem to get a message telling us that we've had a missed call, but this is a text message, not a windows mobile message, and can be upto 4 hours later!
We've also had situations where an HD2 has rung and we've picked it up after one ring to be informed that the caller was about to hang up as it'd been ringing at their end for over a minute!
The other issue we have is with the phones dropping calls mid-call both when taking or making a call... The phone handset shows good signal even when it drops the call... At first we thought it was people touching the hangup button on the screen with their cheek, but I've now witnessed the phones do this when held away from the caller's face and even when it's been on speaker phone waaaaayyyyy away from anything that could touch the screen or buttons...
Oh, and we're running software version 1.66.405.2 on all of the phones, and it appears that the problems are occurring on many (if not all) of the phones... They're all running BsB Tweaks and have all been setup in exactly the same way...
Anybody got any ideas? They seem to be a lovely device for everything else, it just seems that the actual telephone side seems a bit flakey...
lol... every problem you just described was happening to our company when we were using the Orange network in the UK.
We left Orange exactly one year ago after almost going legal with them due to their extremely shoddy service plus underhand and downright illegal activities with our account.
To cut a long story short...
When we took out our contract we bought every line as sim only and Orange gave us a hardware fund to buy our handsets as and when we needed them.
Turns out though... every time we bought an offline handset they were putting it through as an upgrade! This obviously increased the length of contract for the each connection in every purchase. The very definition of an upgrade in Orange's own terms of service (at that time, they may have changed it now) did NOT include buying a handset for a SIM only connection.
On top of this we had the exact same network/service problems you describe with ALL of our handsets (including the non winmo ones), plus many other other issues with their network/service.... missed calls not actually ringing the device.... text messages delivered late and voicemail notifications sometimes up to 6 days late. Dont even get me started on the dropped calls.
When it came down to the month we were supposed to be out of contract Orange told us that we were still in contract and we owed them £70,000 plus the full price of all of our handsets if we wanted to leave!!!!
Well... we told them they were talking rubbish and after a lengthy process going back and fourth with their legal department they eventually admitted defeat. They didnt have a leg to stand on really so Orange didnt get a penny and we kept all of our hardware.
Apologies for the lengthy post there i was trying to keep it short and keep my post in context. What i am trying to say is...
In my opinion your issues are more than likely down to the Orange network then anything else... but they will REFUSE to admit a problem. They also will not support your handset if you didnt buy it directly from them.

Having the exact same problem here so it can't be a carrier problem. This issue goes hand in hand with the switching of bands problem reported in another thread. The only solution as of right now seems to be turning off 3G network-capabilities completely until we get a radio that functions as it should. Would you mind contacting HTC? I think that a company threatening to sell their devices due to bad support on their part might make them do something about it. Us regular consumers they just ignore.

imo... its definately a network issue....Which carrier are you using?
i have HD2's on Vodafone and T-Mobile (both UK) and do not have any of the issues i had previously with Orange (didnt have HD2's at that time though so maybe its just unbranded HD2's on Orange?)

The same carrier I used on my Touch HD and had no problems with(Saunalahti). Going to try the new 2.09 radio and see if that solves my issues.

Which country?
It would be helpful to actually post some details!
Like i said above... it could be the HD2 on your particular network that has an issue.
I really dont think its a handset problem as if it was literally everyone with an HD2 would be going legal!
Ive been using HD2's since Novemeber 2009 and havent encountered any of the problems described in this thread.

My HD2 is switching networks and dropping calls whenever it feels like it. Currently using HSDPA only with GSM + UMTS. I'm guessing my problem is more related to the switching of bands than anything else. Why it would loose its connection from one second to the next is beyond me, but this is a known problem.

Thats a slightly different issue to the OP. Your problem does indeed sound like it is down to band switching. There are a few threads on these forums about this as you already know.

I know, but I think the underlying problem is still the same - I've had plenty of calls dropped even when having full bars. Could be a carrier problem, but due to the amount of people having similar issues I'd say it's a hardware/software problem.

with the band switching issue im unsure... i dont have the problem on any HD2 so i cant possibly comment what the cause could be.
But the OP in this thread has other issues unrelated to to the band switching problem... voicemail notifications delivered late... calls being missed due to phone not even ringing etc... these are NOT related to dropped calls caused by band switching. Im 99.99% sure they are network problems having seen the exact same issues on the exact same network myself.

You're probably right and as a user of the same network you probably know better than I. Was just trying to be helpful.

Maybe he has both problems? shoddy network service AND the band switching issue?
who knows as he hasnt posted back?!
What's interesting though is that we've previously had HTC Touch Diamond 2s, Touch Pros, iPhones (although only a couple) and standard Nokia boggo handsets with the same provider (Orange UK) with no problems.... It's only the HD2s that seem to be affected by these problems...
I'm not sure if it's a band switching issue... is this where it drops from 3G to GSM (or the HDthingy half way between!)? I have noticed the phone drop from full 3G to the H symbol at times for no apparent reason...

er... you do know that H is faster then 3G right?
Its goes like this: HSPA>3G>GPRS>No data/only GSM
I assumed that you knew this if you were supposed to be supporting mobiles for your company.
If you have only 1 bar of HSDPA/HSUPA it is still faster then 4 bars of 3G.
Also... i sort of got at this in a previous post but the Orange network does not like it if you use handsets on their network that are not bought directly from Orange themselves. Your story is oh so familiar to me.
What i would suggest you try with one or two handsets is flashing them with an official Orange ROM for HD2. This firmware must be floating about somewhere as i do believe Orange have the HD2 on their books.
I don't support the phones, I just set 'em up and give 'em out... I'm a broadcast engineer who supports IT and Radio broadcast studios, not mobile telephones... as I said in my original post, I am on call with an HD2, which is a company phone and is dropping/missing calls... I just came on here to see if it's a known problem with HD2s, and if there's a solution, or if it's likely to be something with the network (Orange) which we may be able to jump up and down about and get them to resolve...
I had remembered it the wrong way around with HSPA and 3G, so thank you for clearing that up for me...
Is the band switching issue when it swaps between each then?
nobody else got any ideas?
*tumbleweed passes....*
I'm having similar issues on AT&T in the US. My callers get a fast busy after my phone rings a couple of times. It does not forward to voicemail. I have to force the phone to GSM then call the person back. UNACCEPTABLE.
Sometimes they get "all circuits are busy" message too.
Did you ever geta solution? My 3 year old x7500 is a better phone than this HD2 is at this point.
They probably won't tell you what equipment they have in your area (due to security reasons) but if they have Motorola based cellsites, then you're going to get these issues as the radio equipment struggles to pass from GSM to 3G and back again.
You are not alone........
I don't think this problem is necessarily restricted to Orange; my company had the same problem when rolling out un-branded Touch Pro devices to our users....and we're on the O2 network in the UK.
Our users experienced exactly the same symptoms - calls dropping, unable to answer calls before the other end hung up, etc...
It wasn't until we installed a ROM update from HTC on all the handsets that the problems....um, lessened...they got better but were still present at a much lower level than before.
I think that one poster has already suggested trying a different radio (i.e. the bit that actually handles the calls/band switching etc.), which is separate to the software (version 1.66.xxx in your case). There may be an HTC ROM update on their site - these usually include software and radio updates in one. You can find your current radio version by going to Settings | About Phone | Software Information - it's listed as "Radio Version" (and the latest is somewhere around 2.10.xxx - taken from a T-Mobile US HD2 I think).
When networks brand the HTC handsets, they also test the various radio ROM's on their networks, before loading a (suitably bloated) software ROM and known-working radio ROM onto the devices before shipping. This, in most cases, is something you can try loading on your unbranded devices - not so here, since Orange never released the HD2 in the UK (ok, don't shoot me - they did release it in very small quantities on their business tariff before pulling it due to "issues found in testing"), so they sure as **** didn't release an updated ROM for the device.
Your best bet, if you can't find an HTC ROM update later than 1.66 (which I don't think there is...yet), is to get involved with this forum in the Leo section. Learn about flashing a new HSPL and then try some other radio ROMs to see if any of them solve your particular problem. You'll have to devote a day to reading/learning before you get down and dirty with a handset....unless you have a few of these £500quid beasties you don't mind turning into paperweights!! Only trouble with this route is, once you've found a radio that works on Orange (and doesn't rinse your battery in two hours!), you're gonna have to repeat the HSPL/radio update process on 100 handsets, then re-install/re-configure each and every one.
Not a very inviting prospect (we "only" had 45 handsets to do!), but the end justifies the means. The HD2 is a marvellous handset - I know, I've got one (on T-Mobile UK ) and I wouldn't be without it.
Keep posting any questions/thoughts.....we'll be here to offer our "useful insights" and "helpful suggestions" as long as you can take it!!!
Good luck!!!
Mark.
